The North Carolina Spot Festival Celebrating 51 Years

By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Editor/Publisher Welcome to one of the great long-standing traditions held for 51 years in the Village of Hampstead – The North Carolina Spot Festival.

This year’s event will be Sept. 27 and 28 in the same spot where it has been for years, the field on Hwy. 17 across from the Deerfield subdivision The festival has survived all types of economic conditions and many types of weather and in its 51 years: booms, busts, winds, and rain.

The North Carolina Spot Festival began years ago as a way for the local fire departments to raise money – back in the day when community volunteer fire departments were funded by barbecues, chicken dinners, and in this case, a big fish fry.

Today, the festival has grown and money raised still goes to help the local fire departments, which provide volunteer labor to cook the spots.

Also, a portion of the funds are divided between schools in the area using a formula based on the number of volunteer hours representatives from the individual schools work at the festival. So the more volunteers a school has working at the festival, the more money goes to that school.

For many people the Spot Festival is about that sound of the celebrated fish sizzling in a deep fryer, and is only matched by the crispy, but tender flavor on their plates.

5K run at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, sponsored by PATH, which operates school-based health centers in Pender County.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 with the Topsail Middle School Band and Chorus. Check the festival schedule for more information on what’s happening and when.

Spot dinners will be sold throughout the weekend for $8.

Beer and wine will be available. Pets and coolers are still not allowed, however. Admission is $3.

Arts and Crafts booths will open both days at 10 a.m., and spot dinners will begin serving at 11 a.m. both days. The festival grounds will close at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Festival goers are encouraged to meet and talk to the many political candidates that add the event to their itineraries.

Children will enjoy the many games available, including giant bouncy castles and slides.

Being a festival queen is so much fun, however, it is also a lot of work. It is my job to represent my hometown of Hampstead and the Spot Festival respectfully and serve as a role model and mentor for people within not only Hampstead, but the entire state of North Carolina.

I work to ensure that the word is spread about the North Carolina Spot Festival and Pageant as well as our customs and traditions. Additionally, my Spot Festival Princess as well as my committee work to raise funds to support future pageants and scholarships.

One very important goal of mine for my year as your Spot Festival Queen is to promote my platform – volunteerism and serving our community.

Through my service sorority, Gamma Sigma Sigma, I have witnessed first-hand how the kindness and generosity of one

Samantha Romero person, can make such an overwhelming difference in the life of someone in need.

Recently, I have taken a special interest in an additional campaign: the NO MORE campaign. This campaign takes a stance in helping educate and prevent sexual abuse as well as domestic violence.

2013 Spot Festival Princess I am Savannah Marie Shirley, your 2013-2014 North Carolina Spot Festival Princess. I am seventh grader at Dixon Middle School. I am a member of the Junior National Honor Society, Odyssey of the Mind Team, Dixon Middle School Chorus and Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Youth Group. I love to spend time with my family and my big black lab, Molly. My passion is performing arts and I hope to one day perform on Broadway.

Being a festival queen is a lot more than wearing pretty dresses with a crown on your head. It is my duty to represent the community of Hampstead gracefully and impact this community in a positive way. I am also responsible for promoting the tradition of the North Carolina Spot Festival and Pageant and raising funds for the scholarships that future queens will benefit from.

I have many goals this year as Spot Festival Princess, but one very personal goal is to raise awareness to a crisis that occurs every day, bullying. It is

an awful word that everyone can relate to. As a 13year--old girl I have been witness to acts of bullying and I have also been bullied. I hope throughout my reign I can reach out those who are victims and encourage them to stand tall and stand together.

Even bullies get bullied and it becomes a neverending cycle. If we spread the message, show love to one another and be a light, we can stop bullying everywhere.

I love being the Spot Festival Princess because it is so much fun. I enjoy spending time with my Spot Festival Queen, Samantha Romero. We always have a lot of fun together. I also love making appearances and performing at different community events. Being blessed with the opportunity to share my talent with others has been amazing.

The North Carolina Spot Festival Pageant is an amazing opportunity for young girls and I am so happy to be the 2013-2014 North Carolina Spot Festival Princess.
