etween 100 and 150. That is the estimated number of kittens an unspayed cat can have in her lifetime. ABC Clinic Pet Refuge Animal Birth Control Clinic says in just one year, an unspayed cat who is allowed to roam outdoors can have three litters resulting in 12 kittens.

One year later, those 12 kittens if kept unspayed, can have 144 offspring of their own. Such figures illustrate that the potential for feral cat overpopulation is high.

According to Shelter Animals Counts, nearly 2.9 million felines entered rescues and shelters across the country in the United States in 2024. About 275,000 of them were euthanized. Cat overpopulation can be controlled if people learn more about how to keep cats safe and happy, which starts with spaying.

WHAT IS SPAYING? Spaying is a surgical procedure that removes the ovaries and sometimes uterus of a female cat with the intention of preventing reproduction. VCA Animal Hospitals characterize spaying as a major surgical procedure that requires placing the cat under general anesthesia. Most cats are able to return home within 12 to 24 hours of surgery. Even though spaying is considered a major operation, the risk of complications is very low. Spaying is a routine procedure.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES TO SPAYING? Small Door Veterinary says there are many advantages to spaying a cat, which can help with population control, reduce risk of reproductive disease, eliminate heat cycles, and help head off unwanted behaviors like roaming to find a mate. Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers and the risk of breast cancer.

VCA says cats spayed before their first heat cycle have a less than 1 percent chance of developing breast cancer.

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD A CAT BE SPAYED? Today’s Veterinary Practice says for owned cats, the optimal age to spay is four to five months of age to catch the cat before its first estrus cycle. For cats in shelters, the optimal age could be as early as eight weeks of age. An older cat also can be spayed if it is adopted and hasn’t been altered. It’s always best to speak with a veterinarian about spay choices to protect the health of the animal.

Spaying felines at an early age can reduce the large numbers of cats entering shelters and even prevent an assortment of health issues.

raveling with pets can be a rewarding experience that enables individuals to share new adventures with their companion animals. Bringing pets along on vacation has become quite popular. According to Top Dog Pet Travel, a central Florida agency specializing in pet-friendly bookings, there has been an uptick in people traveling with their pets since 2024.

A report from the American Pet Products Association indicates 22 percent of both cat and dog owners reported taking their animals on at least three flights in 2024.

• PLAN AHEAD. Research any pet regulations and restrictions prior to traveling. Some hotels, airlines and rental properties have specific rules or fees for pets. PITFALLS THAT CAN COMPROMISE

ogs are not just pets, they often become cherished family members who share in all of the joys and accomplishments of a household. Training a dog that’s new to a home can be deeply rewarding, but various pitfalls can slow the progress of training and potentially contribute to confusion or even lead to behavioral problems. Pet parents can get a leg up on what can go wrong and why, and adjust to help make the training process go more smoothly.

PROBLEM #1: INCONSISTENCY Everyone in the family may want to take part in training the new pet and this can create confusion if everyone isn’t on the same page. People who use different commands or allow different behaviors may confuse the dog. To fix the issue, it’s important that everyone use the same commands and consistently reinforce the same rules. It’s not alright for the dog to jump up on the furniture when the rule is no furniture lounging, for example.

PROBLEM #2: POOR REWARD TIMING Rewarding dogs for good behavior is one of the hallmarks of positive reinforcement training.

However, rewarding or correcting the pet even a few seconds too late can mean the animal may not connect the feedback to the action. It’s important to deliver rewards or corrections within one to two seconds of the desired behavior for the best results. Leerburg Training suggests using marker training, also known as clicker training, which affords trainers a way to immediately communicate with the dog the instant they do something favorable. Withholding the click/mark, tells the dog that you don’t like what they are doing without any punishment.

PROBLEM #3: OVERUSING PUNISHMENT Positive reinforcement is the best method of training a dog, and the one that most professional trainers rely on. Still, it can be challenging to avoid yelling or using aversive tools to try to stop a behavior if other methods are slow to work. However, hitting an animal, yelling excessively or using shock collars can create fear or aggression. In some instances, such tactics may border on animal abuse. Advanced Canine Techniques says that dogs can sense a human’s energy level and confidence and any negative energy, which can be discouraging and adversely affect motivation.

Taking a break while training until it can be more fun and positive may stem stress and negative behaviors for both dog and person.

PROBLEM #4: UNCLEAR COMMANDS It’s important that everyone utilize the same commands when training a dog. Saying “come here” one day and “get over here” another can be confusing and result in slower learning. Dogs may respond better to visual cues along with verbal ones, so people can utilize hand gestures when setting commands as well.

PROBLEM #5: INCONSISTENT RESULTS Many people have dogs that behave wonderfully while in the house, but poorly at a dog park or elsewhere. A dog may not realize that commands and behavior expectations apply everywhere. That’s why it is necessary to practice in different environments and only periodically introduce distractions.

It’s also important to know that a dog that is bored may exhibit restlessness or destructive behavior and won’t be able to focus during training. Meeting the dog’s physical needs first can help when training comes afterwards.

After all is said and done, if training is not going as expected, consult a professional trainer for assistance.

The American Veterinary Dental College says periodontal disease is the most frequent clinical condition in adult dogs and cats. By the age of three, most dogs and cats show some evidence of periodontal disease, underscoring the need for proactive dental care.

Before discussing which issues can contribute to poor oral hygiene in dogs and cats, it’s important to point out that the dangers of dental issues extend beyond the mouth. Anaerobic bacteria thriving in gum pockets can cause the gums to become inflamed and tissue to deteriorate. As a result, bacteria can gain direct access to the pet’s bloodstream through damaged tissues, says the AVDC. Data consistently shows a correlation between oral bacteria and changes in the heart, liver and kidneys. For example, chronic infection contributes to atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of cardiac issues in dogs.

Certain factors can contribute to poor pet dental health. It is best to discuss concerns with a veterinarian before making any changes to pet care. However, these factors may accelerate dental deterioration.

• DIET: A diet that is soft, canned or moisture-rich can provide less abrasive action to help clean the pet’s teeth. Opting for harder foods can naturally clean the teeth during eating, and vets may suggest a specialized dental kibble to help even more.

• BREED: Certain breeds are prone to various health issues. Small breeds like Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, Pomeranians, and Maltese are genetically predisposed to dental crowding and premature periodontal diseases because their mouths are small, advises PetMD. Their teeth often are full-sized, leading to crowding, misalignment and trapping of food debris and bacteria.

• BRUSHING: A lack of home care is the single biggest factor in the deterioration of pets’ dental health. Pets may not have their teeth brushed daily, leading to the rapid calcification of plaque. Various veterinary studies point to brushing a pet’s teeth each day as an effective way to prevent plaque buildup. Furthermore, because it must be done under anesthesia, which can be costly, some pet owners do not have their pets’ teeth professionally cleaned by a vet.

Pet dental care is an important component of pet ownership. Dental diseases can develop and affect the mouth and other areas of the body.

Specific schedules will vary based on the type of pet and the advice of a vet, but there are standard protocols recommended by most professionals. Here’s a look at common core and noncore vaccinations, courtesy of The Spruce: Pets and PetMD. CATS FVRCP: Kittens receive the feline viral rhinotracheitis, calcivirus, and panleukopenia generally between six and eight weeks of age. It is repeated every three to four weeks until around 16 weeks of age FELV: Feline leukemia virus is non-core in low-risk adult cats but often is considered core for all cats less than a year old. Kittens will get the first FeLV vaccine between nine and 11 weeks of age, then a booster three or four weeks later. Adult cats who spend time outdoors should get this vaccine booster annually.

FIV: Feline immunodeficiency virus is spread through bite wounds. It is no longer considered core, nor available in North America.

DOGS DA2PP/DHPP/DAPP: Canine distemper/adenovirus-2 is commonly given as one vaccine referred to by these acronyms. The first dose of this vaccine tends to be administered between six to eight weeks of age, then boosters again between 10 and 12 weeks, and 14 and 16 weeks of age.

From then on, it is an annual vaccine.

RABIES: Around the age of 14 weeks, dogs will get a rabies virus vaccine. The rabies vaccine will be an annual shot unless the vet administers the three-year vaccine.

LEPTOSPIROSIS: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by the leptospira bacteria. It affects dogs who come in contact with infected animal urine or contaminated water or soil. The leptospirosis vaccine will protect against the bacteria and symptoms.

BORDETELLA: Also known as kennel cough, bordetella is a highly contagious respiratory infection. Dogs who spend a lot of time in social settings are recommended to get this vaccine, first between age six and eight weeks, and later as an annual vaccine.

LYME: Vets recommend that dogs who live in areas where Lyme disease is prevalent receive the Lyme vaccine at around age 10 weeks, and yearly thereafter.

CANINE INFLUENZA: This vaccine is recommended for dogs who go to daycare, boarding facilities, the groomer, or any places where they will spend time among other dogs.

Various vaccinations are recommended for companion cats and dogs to keep them safe and healthy. Pet owners are urged to speak with their animals’ veterinarians to get pets on the right vaccination schedule.

et ownership requires taking steps to ensure the health and happiness of the companion animal. Ensuring that steps are taken to help a pet avoid illness is a priority that pet parents must take seriously. This includes being aware of diseases that have the potential to affect their animals.

A BITING HEALTH PROBLEM The American Veterinary Medical Association says heartworm disease remains one of the most significant and growing medical threats to pets. While the illness once was localized to parts of the southern United States, heartworm disease now poses a threat to animals in many other regions as well. That’s due in part to the widespread territory of the insect responsible for spreading the heartworm parasite: the mosquito.

Although the southeastern U.S. and the Mississippi River Valley remain the areas with the highest concentrations of heartworm disease, the Companion Animal Parasite Council says veterinarians are now diagnosing heartworm at higher rates in northern states like Colorado, Montana and North Dakota. According to Albert Animal Health Source, heartworm disease exists across Canada, too, particularly in warmer regions with high mosquito activity.

WHAT IS HEARTWORM DISEASE? Heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal blood-borne illness spread by mosquitoes that largely affects dogs. Cats, ferrets, wolves, foxes, and other mammals also can get the disease.

Heartworms can live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels. Heartworm disease can cause lasting organ damage.

The American Heartworm Society says heartworms are foot-long worms that start off as microscopic larvae called microfilaria that circulate in the bloodstream. When a mosquito takes a blood meal, it can spread these worms to other animals. It takes about six months for the larvae to develop into adult heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live five to seven years in dogs and two to three years in cats.

KEEPING PETS SAFE The cost comparison between keeping a pet safe from heartworms and treating an active infection is significant. Most monthly preventives cost between $6 and $18 per month, according to PetMD. For a dog that tests positive, a full heartworm treatment protocol can typically cost around $1,500.

Despite this, only about onethird of all dogs in the U.S. are on a consistent preventive, says the AHS.

yme disease is not exclusive to human beings. Dogs are susceptible to this significant vectorborne threat as well. Caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, Lyme disease can lead to debilitating joint pain, lethargy and even life-threatening kidney failure in extreme cases.

It behooves pet parents to safeguard their animals from Lyme disease.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says Lyme disease is primarily transmitted through the blacklegged tick, commonly called the deer tick. As tick populations expand due to shifting climates, Lyme disease is no longer localized to the Northeast. In 2024, the Companion Animal Parasite Council found 7 percent of dogs tested in Wisconsin and more than 10 percent of dogs in parts of New England tested positive for Lyme antibodies. Tick-borne illnesses are on the rise even in historically low-risk areas like California.

Pet owners can take several steps to protect a dog from Lyme disease.

• MAINTAIN FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION ALL YEAR LONG. Ticks are showing up in areas where they weren’t always found and in months when people thought they were dormant. It’s essential for pets to be protected with repellants and tick-preventatives all year long. These defenses can be purchased as chewables, topicals and specialized collars. According to the AVMA, a tick typically must be attached for 24 to 48 hours to transmit the Lyme bacteria.

Preventatives aim to eliminate the tick within this window.

• CONSIDER VACCINATING THE DOG. Dogs that live in areas with high tick concentrations could probably benefit from receiving the Lyme vaccine. The efficacy can vary between 60 and 90 percent, but the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine notes that vaccinated dogs who do get Lyme disease often experience less severe symptoms.

• KEEP THE YARD TIDY. Ticks thrive in tall grass, leaf litter and wooded areas. Homeowners can keep their lawns short to eliminate the moist, shaded environments that ticks like. They also should clear leaf debris and brush from the yard.

• CONDUCT A VISUAL INSPECTION. After time outdoors, it’s important for pet owners to check their dogs for ticks and remove any they find. Attention should be paid to the ears, eyelids, under the collar, between the toes, and under the tail.

• AVOID WALKS IN WOODED AREAS. When walking dogs in parks and other areas with a lot of trees, it’s important to stick to the trails and keep the pets out of the brush where ticks are bound to be lurking, especially during peak times when ticks are active. The New York State Department of Health says ticks are most active from March to mid-May, and then mid-August to November.

Protecting a dog from ticks and Lyme disease requires diligence and continuity.

HOW TO KEEP PETS SAFE DURING SUMMER HEAT Heat-related illness remains one of the biggest summer risks for pets. Despite widespread concern, many pet parents still struggle to identify the early signs of overheating. According to the survey, nearly half (46%) of pet parents report their pet has experienced heat exhaustion or dehydration at some point.

The survey also highlighted the lengths many pet parents are willing to go financially to keep pets comfortable. Nearly 80% said they would sacrifice personal comforts to prioritize their pet’s safety during the summer months. More than half said they would spend up to $100 extra per month on cooling costs, 37% would purchase a new air conditioner specifically for their pet, and 31% said they would even cancel an expensive vacation in favor of their pet’s well-being.

In a pet emergency, it is important for individuals to remain calm. Injured pets can be unpredictable and lash out when in pain or if they are frightened. A measured and cautious approach is essential, even for pets that are normally docile. According to Veg ER for Pets, the following steps should be followed during a pet emergency.

• ASSESS THE SITUATION. Look closely at your pet and see if you can identify what is wrong. A severe injury or broken bone may be evident. If a pet is sick but you don’t know why, pay close attention to the symptoms and behavior so that information can be relayed to a veterinarian.

The ASPCA says signs that emergency care may be necessary include pale gums, rapid breathing, weak or rapid pulse, changes in body temperature, difficulty standing, paralysis, seizures, excessive bleeding, and loss of consciousness.

• KNOW YOUR CARE OPTIONS. If it is during business hours, you can call your veterinarian and see if they can check on the pet. If it’s after hours, contact the nearest 24-hour pet emergency center in the area and take your pet there for care. In some instances, care can be administered at home. First aid like removing choking blockages or performing a modified Heimlich maneuver may be possible. You also may be able to administer CPR to help your pet until a vet can take over.

A suffering pet can make pet owners extremely nervous. But slowing down, assessing the situation and seeking care can typically result in a happy outcome.

A COMPANION THROUGH IT ALL A devastating cancer diagnosis left Lois hospitalized for eight months. Afterward, she began receiving home-delivered meals through her local Meals on Wheels provider. That connection proved to be a lifeline.

Brachycephalic dogs are those breeds with short noses. Some notable examples of brachycephalic dog breeds include Boston terriers, bullmastiffs, chihuahuas, English bulldogs, French bulldogs, pugs, and shih-tzus.

Brachycephalic dogs tend to have a more difficult time walking in hot weather, and the AVMA recommends dog owners stop frequently to allow these dogs to rest on hot days. Short walks also may be all these breeds can handle when temperatures spike. In addition, alter the walking schedule if you’re accustomed to walking during midday, when temperatures tend to be especially hot in warm weather seasons. Walk in the early morning before the sun gets too high and/or evening when the sun has begun to set.

• BE CAREFUL WHEN TEMPERATURES DROP. Certain breeds may be vulnerable to cold weather as well. Small dogs, dogs that have short coats, dogs that lack body fat, and even some brachycephalic dogs may not fare well when temperatures drop. The AVMA notes that some dogs without long hair or body fat to protect them might get frostbite if cold weather walks go on too long. The short noses that are a hallmark of Brachycephalic dogs also can make it hard for these animals to regulate their body temperature, which can be dangerous in cold weather.

• LEARN TO SPOT THE SIGNS OF STRUGGLE. Dogs exhibit some common symptoms when struggling with hot or cold temperatures during a walk. The AVMA notes that a dog exhibiting signs of heat stress may appear unexpectedly anxious or weak, be less responsive than usual to commands, pant heavily or frequently, or drool excessively. Dog owners also can check the dog’s gums for discoloration, dryness or stickiness. Take any of these signs very seriously and get the dog indoors and even to a veterinarian immediately. Carry the animal home or to the vet’s office, if necessary. The signs that something is awry in cold weather include shivering, weakness and/or diminished mental alertness. Muscle stiffness, shallow and slow breathing, and even collapse may be indicative of hypothermia, which requires immediate attention from a veterinarian. A dog that suddenly takes a wide-based stance also may be under duress.

• KNOW THAT WEATHER ISN’T THE ONLY WALKING HAZARD. Where a dog is walked also can pose a safety and health hazard.

Avoid areas under construction, areas with uneven ground, icy surfaces, areas where wildlife is known to roam, and surfaces where de-icing products have been spread.

Walking is great exercise for dogs. But dog owners must be mindful of weather and additional variables that can pose a safety risk and health hazard to dogs.
