DISCOVER AND EXPLORE THE CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY

Grape & Grain Trail

Residents and visitors who want to find information on all of Chautauqua County’s wine and craft beverage producers have a new resource to turn to.

The “Chautauqua County Grape & Grain Trail”, launched in the summer of 2024, is a collaboration between the Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG) and the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau (CCVB). The marketing effort is designed to showcase the various wineries, craft breweries, and craft distilleries located within the county, along with the numerous outdoor activities and nature attractions that welcome visitors to the area.

“We want to brand Chautauqua County as a destination for not only wine enthusiasts, but also for those who enjoy beer and distilled spirits, while also distinguishing the county from other wine and craft beverage-producing destinations by highlighting the county’s abundant trail networks, waterways, other natural public spaces for recreation, and the amenities that support ecotourism,” said Mark Geise, Deputy County Executive for Economic Development and Co-chair of the CCPEG Advisory Board.

The Grape & Grain Trail landing page is available at TourChautauqua.com/field-to-glass. Visitors will find a list of various businesses that produce and serve wine, craft beer, and spirits. They will also find links to other pages on the CCVB website, which will allow them to explore ecotourism friendly adventures in Chautauqua County. With this information, they can then plan their trip to the county and any of the listed destinations.

Throughout the summer and fall of 2024, the Grape & Grain Trail was heavily promoted on various social media channels, including Instagram, Meta, and Snapchat. More than 4.6 million ads were displayed during the campaign, resulting in more than 42,000 visits to the Grape & Grain landing page. Additional visits continue to take place during 2025.

“This marketing initiative is an important collaborative effort,” said Andrew Nixon, CCVB director. “The campaign is designed to drive additional visitation to our county’s wineries, breweries, and distilleries, while also working to extend visitor stays and increase visitor spending throughout the region. Through CCPEG, several organizations and businesses have been able to secure the funding necessary to bring this initiative to fruition.”

“This campaign creatively aims to showcase the natural beauty of Chautauqua County while highlighting the region’s vibrant

craft beverage producers, including local wine and spirits,” said Kristy Kathman, CCPEG economic development specialist. “Our goal is to celebrate the picturesque landscapes, various ecotourism destinations, and rich flavors of local brews, wines, and spirits, making Chautauqua County a destination for nature and craft beverage enthusiasts alike.”

The Grape & Grain Trail campaign was developed by Paperkite, a marketing firm from Cooperstown, selected by CCPEG following an RFP process that generated interest from more than a dozen different agencies. During the first half of 2024, Paperkite developed a campaign that is unique to Chautauqua County, based on research, interviews, and visits with the businesses and locations connected to the effort. Using that information, the firm then launched the campaign and oversaw its implementation through the rest of 2024. At the start of 2025, the campaign was handed off to CCVB.

Chautauqua County Grape & Grain Trail was supported by a Market New York grant from Empire State Development and I LOVE NY/New York State’s Division of Tourism through the Regional Economic Development Council initiative. Matching funds for the project were provided by the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation.

About CCPEG - The Chautauqua County Partnership for Economic Growth (CCPEG) serves as the main convener of economic development partners and resources to advance key projects that achieve economic prosperity in Chautauqua County. It is an initiative of the Chautauqua Region Economic Development Corporation (CREDC). For more information visit CHQPartnership.org.

About CCVB - The mission of the Chautauqua County Visitors Bureau (CCVB) is to support Chautauqua County businesses and the local economy by marketing to, attracting, and serving visitors to our county. CCVB is the official tourism promotion agency for Chautauqua County, designated by the County of Chautauqua and the New York State Division of Tourism/ILNY program. CCVB programs and services include various forms of advertising, publicity/travel media relations, a comprehensive visitor website, a travel guide & map, information center locations, support of group tours, group functions, tournaments, and much more. ARTS & CRAFTS FESTIVAL

Moore

YWCA Westfield’s Annual Arts & Crafts Festival Returns in 2025

YWCA Westfield is gearing up for its highly anticipated annual Arts & Crafts Festival, set to take place the weekend of July 25 and 26, 2025, at Moore Park. This free two-day event invites visitors to explore a diverse collection of handmade items, including original artwork, home and garden décor, clothing, accessories, and toys.

“This festival is a true celebration of creativity and community,” said Stephanie Stevens, Executive Director of YWCA Westfield. “We love seeing local artisans share their talents, and it’s always amazing to watch our park transform into a vibrant marketplace.”

With over 150 vendors expected to participate, attendees can browse a wide variety of handcrafted goods and enjoy an array of food vendors offering delicious local fare. The festival is anticipated to attract around 5,000 visitors over the weekend.

“The Arts & Crafts Festival is a wonderful tradition that brings our community together while welcoming visitors to experience the charm of Westfield,” said Kathryn Bronstein, YWCA Westfield Board President and Festival Chairperson. “It highlights the creativity of regional artists and crafters, and we’re

excited to showcase everything our area has to offer, including a stay at our YWCA Westfield Airbnb.”

Since its inception in 1971, the festival has grown into a signature summer event. YWCA Westfield took over the planning in 1992, continuing the legacy of what has become a beloved tradition.

One of the festival’s original organizers, Linda Dunn, reflected on the event’s transition back in 1992, saying, “It was time for new leadership, and after 20 successful years, I knew the festival would continue to grow.” Now, more than 30 years later, that vision holds strong as the festival remains an essential part of Westfield’s summer season.

THE WINES Read Between

In the heart of the wine trail, you’ll find Tia Book Cellar, a locally owned, independent bookstore at 15 W Main St., North East, PA. The name “tia” is a play on the acronym TINA, made popular in the eighties that stands for “There Is No Alternative.” Where globalization was inevitable, and most believed that big box retail would be the only option. Removing, the negative produces “there is always,” local, independent, and a story. Tia is a consciously curated store with a selection of bestsellers, award winners, classics, puzzles, games and gifts.

Tia is committed to finding strength in the community, connecting common interests, and uniting local merchants to create complimentary businesses along the shores of Lake Erie and the wine trail.

On June 7, 2025, at 3 PM, Tia Book Cellar will host “In conversation with Paul Komorowski and Cindy Riefstahl.” This event will honor the work of the late Robert B. Riefstahl, Sugar Reports and Homemade Dill Pickles: A Sweet & Bitter WWII Love Story. The work was presented with two Finalist Medals in the 2019 New Generation Indie Book Awards. Riefstahl passed away before knowing his work won these awards. This event with his widow, Cindy and local WWII war reenactor, will discuss events and battles described in the book.

This July, Candlewick Press and the American Booksellers Association are again teaming up with 325 independent bookstores nationwide, including Tia Book Cellar, for some hide-and-seek fun designed to encourage residents to patronize local businesses. There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts for the entire month of July.

Families love joining the scavenger hunt to find the iconic children’s book character, with his red-and-white-striped shirt and black glasses, hidden in twenty-five local businesses. Look for the list of participating businesses this June, and on July 1, join the fun by picking up a “Find Waldo Local in North East, PA!” stamp card. With each miniature Waldo spotted, searchers get their card stamped or signed by the participating shop. Eagle-eyed hunters can also look for Waldo’s special 2025 read and white-striped magnifying glass in Tia Book Cellar! Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a grand-prize drawing for Waldo books and other prizes. All participants will be welcomed to attend the celebration party at the end of the month at the store.

Martin Handford’s collections of crowd scenes took the world by storm in the late 1980s, and since then the books have held a cherished place on bookstore shelves, in family libraries, and in classrooms around the world. More than 80 million Waldo books have been sold worldwide, and they’ve been translated into over thirty languages.

High-Quality Wines

Johnson Estate’s Tasting Room, located in a 1920s apple cold-storage building built by the first generation of Johnsons; was renovated to provide a special view, through a ceiling-high glass wall, to some of the stainless-steel tanks used in our wine production. That glass wall provides the framework for the story of Johnson Estate which includes a rich authentic heritage, starting with the first generation, to the current innovative and consistently high-quality wines (and service) by the third generation of Johnsons and their team.

THE HISTORY OF JOHNSON ESTATE, REMEMBER THE NUMBER THREE

The history of Johnson Estate Winery is a story of threes; three generations, three buildings and three types of grapes. In

the late 1800s, an English orphan named Frederick Johnson immigrated to Western Canada from England as a teenager. In 1896 he found his way to Cornell University to study entomology and later worked for the Department of Agriculture. In 1911, Johnson purchased a 1820s home and farm in Westfield, New York and planted fruit orchards as well as Concord and Niagara vineyards. According to family lore, Johnson started making wine in the basement of the farmhouse during Prohibition. In 1920, he built an apple cold storage facility that now houses the winery’s tasting room.

Second-generation family member, Frederick Spencer Johnson, grew up on the farm and served in World War II as a naval aviator, graduated from Cornell University in 1946, and then raised his family overseas while working for the Rockefellers’ agricultural endeavors in Latin America. He returned to the farm in 1960 after his father died, removed the aging fruit orchards, and planted the first wine grapes in Western New York. Like Dr. Frank in the Finger Lakes, Frederick Johnson was the pioneer in WNY who understood that its special Germanic microclimate was excellent for wine grapes. He opened the winery in 1961 in his father’s apple cold storage building becoming the state’s oldest estate winery, supported NYS’s Farm Winery Act passed in 1976, and built a new tank building in the early ‘80s.

Upon his death in 1998, the third generation of Johnsons, Frederick Jr., Elizabeth and Anthony, all Cornell graduates, inherited the farm. They planted new Riesling vineyards and constructed a finished goods warehouse. In early 2011, Frederick Johnson Jr., with his wife Jennifer, purchased his siblings’ interests in the farm and winery. They completed a renovation of the tasting room later than year, just in time for the celebration of the winery’s 50th anniversary. The farm, owned by the same family for over one-hundred years, was awarded a Century Farm designation from the New York State Agricultural Society in 2018.

FROM BUD TO BOTTLE – ESTATE-GROWN GRAPES TO AWARD-WINNING WINES

The team at Johnson Estate, led by Owners Fred and Jennifer Johnson and Winemaker Jeff Murphy, pays attention to all of the right details, from “bud to bottle”. The winery, celebrating its 62nd year in 2023, produces, innovative, and high-quality award-winning wines - over forty vintages, from dry to sweet, made from the thirteen varieties of grapes grown on 110 acres of Estate vineyards. These include European Classics such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, now grown on the Estate, as well as dry rosés, fortified and ice wines.

continued from page 44

MAY WINE – A CREATIVE EXAMPLE – NEW VINTAGE THIS WEEK

Jeff Murphy has been Johnson Estate’s Winemaker for over twenty years during which time he has introduced over a dozen award-winning wines to the Estate’s portfolio. He has a degree from Pennsylvania State University in Food Science and Enology and prior to joining Johnson Estate, had worked at Glenora Wine Cellars and two other New York wineries. In a terroir which excels in growing Germanic varieties, Jeff has a palate and preference for making wines which accentuate the estate-grown grapes’ best attributes. He is inspired by German food and wine culture to the produce European and Germanic style wines which best express our “terroir”. There is no better example that our sparkling Vidal Blanc May Wine, which is infused with dried sweet woodruff. This wine, inspired by Germany’s May Day celebrations, mimics their white wine punches, as a German friend said once – it’s “Mai Wein in a bottle”. The new May wine vintage will be released this week!

HOSPITALITY - INDOORS & OUT: HAVE YOU BEEN TO FLIGHT?

At Johnson Estate, the hospitality of our staff matches the quality of our wines. The Tasting Room at Johnson Estate is opened every day, year-round, except for the four major holidays. In addition, the winery opened a new outdoor tasting venue in 2021, which we call FLIGHT. It is open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day and is named FLIGHT to honor of the founder’s love of planes AND to remind you that we serve “flights of wine” as well as cheese and charcuterie boards – large enough to be your lunch. To take advantage of the Estate’s vineyards and natural beauty, we also offer a number of “experiences” to be enjoyed – including vineyard walks (guided or self-guided), winemakers’ dinners, and harvest happenings. We hope that you can join us. More information is available on our website, www.JohnsonWinery.com. HIGH QUALITY WINES

Weidner

Try one of our original recipe favorites • Treat your guests to a homemade BBQ Dinner!

In 1956, Bert Weidner and his two brothers set up a small stand at the Erie County Fair and began serving BBQ Chicken. They slow cooked fresh chicken over an open flame all the while basting it with their own special recipe BBQ sauce until it was cooked to perfection – tender and juicy on the inside, crispy and golden brown on the outside.

Three generations later, we are cooking it the exact same way and using the sauce as Bert and his broth-

ers did over 60 years ago. Today we are still at the Erie County Fair, the Eden Corn Festival and hundreds of fundraisers, events and private parties all over Western NY.

Now, not only can you order our signature chicken, but you can also try our wood smoked pork and ribs, tender roast beef or any of our delicious homemade sides.

If you are planning a party or event, give us a call! We will take care of all the food, so you can relax and enjoy yourself. You and your guests will be happy you did!

Portage Hill

Portage Hill Art Gallery is now in its 43rd year of providing a unique art experience to Chautauqua County residents and county visitors alike! The gallery was originally created by Audrey and Donald Dowling in 1982 as a place where clients could find regional fine arts and crafts year round. The county is abundant with artists and the Dowlings are still keeping to that original mission. More than half of their 1940s Greek Revival house has been converted to gallery space and is filled with original work of the region’s best artists. Much of the rest of the space functions as Audrey’s studio spaces. There are two regions of the house used by her for painting and mixed media with a small printmaking printing

press region. The garage functions as her clay studio and part of the barn has been hearted and converted into a framing studio that Audrey uses to frame her own original work.

This past winter was a doozy in Chautauqua County, but between snow intervention events, Audrey kept working in her studios and has a lot of new work to share with visitors! Always inspired by the natural world around her, Audrey’s new work includes several new pieces that include her new block print of the Chautauqua county woods as a springboard using several different artistic interpretations. These include mixed media, different ways of printing them and even a 3D piece. Stop in to the gallery found on Rte 394 halfway between Mayville and Westfield to see the new work.

Long known for her one of a kind clay pieces, Audrey is also focusing on her clay studio now we are in spring weather!

This year at Portage Hill Art Gallery, several new artists are featured with their new pastels, pottery, photography and paintings. As always, Audrey has many jewelry choices made by other craftspeople.

Two special summer events will include two Art Trails. For these events, three artists set up in tents near the flower gardens behind the gallery, in addition to Audrey’s work in the gallery. These two art trail driving events are put together by the North Shore Arts Alliance. At the gallery visitors will find Tim Sivertsen, Myriam Mayshark and David Gregor along with Audrey. They will be held on Memorial Day Weekend, May 24th and 25th 10AM-5 PM and Labor Day Weekend, Aug 30th and 31st 10AM - 5 PM. Hop in your car and come along to join the fun as you shop for some new great art pieces for your homes and summer homes.

The orchestra’s season begins Sept. 27th at the historic Warner Theatre with The Music of John Williams and concludes on May 9th with Britten’s War Requiem, a dramatic and emotional work. Throughout the season, the Music of Billy Joel Starring Michael Cavanaugh, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Live in Concert, Copland’s Rodeo, and the New World Symphony will offer amazing musical experiences at the Warner Theatre. Ashley Brown -- Broadway’s own Mary Poppins -- will return to Erie April 25 and 26 to perform her favorite Broadway and Disney Classics.

“With audience favorites like Ashley Brown and Blaine Krauss returning to the Pops, and brand-new stars like Michael Cavanaugh singing the music of Billy Joel, I think we have five winning concerts spread over the season,” said Daniel Meyer, Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic. “For our symphonic fans, it’s hard to imagine a more dramatic lineup, including Mahler’s epic 6th Symphony, Britten’s searing and deeply emotional War Requiem, and Dvořák’s New World Symphony. We will collaborate with star pianist Orli Shaham for the very first time as she performs Mozart, as well as rising star violinist Alexi Kenney, who will be bringing his unique flair and musicality to Barber’s

continued from page 58

The season is carefully curated by Meyer himself.

“I really strive to create individual programs that will inspire you to want to hear more, while I also look to make sure our ten mainstage weekends at the Warner Theatre have breadth, depth, and some fascinating elements to help you explore this great music with joy,” he said.

The Pops Matinee Series will continue this season. All scheduled Pops concert performances will continue to have two concerts: one on Saturday at 7:30 PM and one the following Sunday at 3pm. This brings the total number of regular season performances to 15 each season.

“We’re excited to continue bringing world-class performances to our community right here in Erie,” said Corey Morris, Erie Philharmonic Marketing and Communications Manager. “Experiencing the scores to iconic films live and in a beautiful, historic theatre is a one-of-a-kind experience. And our symphonic season includes several genre-changing masterpieces by contemporary composers.”

Single ticket sales for the general public begin July 28.

Erie Philharmonic programming is financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development.

See below for the 2025-26 season information. All concerts will take place at the Warner Theatre, located at 811 State Street in downtown Erie, PA.

DUNKIRK

Lighthouse

The Dunkirk Lighthouse is celebrating the 150 anniversary of the Keeper’s house and tower this year. The house and tower were built in their current location in 1875. There has been a working lighthouse on the property since 1826. The museum has been open since 1984. The first floor of the house is set up for visitors to get a feeling of what life would have been like between 1875 and 1960 when the keeper and his family lived in the house. The second-floor bedrooms have been turned into a military museum. Each room is a different branch of the armed forces. Each room contains several cases of artifacts from the different wars and eras. The Coast Guard Building has artifacts donated by the Coast Guard along with artifacts located in Lake Erie from sunken ships. There are also artifacts from the Navy and other branches.

Museum tours begin in the gift shop. Tours cost $10 per person unless you are over the age of 55, a veteran, or a student, the cost for those visitors is $8. Children from 5-10 years of age are $3. Children under 5 are free.

There is a Pavilion on the property that can be rented out for wedding, reunions, parties of any sort. It has a capacity of 150 people. The pavilion has electricity and canvas rolldown sides. “ A very happy accident”. If you were to ask the owners of Wanderlust Custard & Carry-Out Cuisine in Westfield, NY why they went into business, this would be the response you would receive. In July 2023, Ericca Caccamise opened the doors of Wanderlust with two flavors of custom frozen custards and some Italian ice. In September that year, partner James Powers joined as the chef, and together, they began offering cost-friendly take-out dishes that rival the finest food in Western NY. They now provide a full menu of carry-out cuisine as well as catering. Signature entrees include Jambalaya, Beef Bourguignon, Chicken Cordon Bleu.

Ericca & Jim are working with the village to help bring a C-20 certified incubator kitchen to the area. With the recent changes in NYS food safety laws, many former home food processors are no longer able to produce their products without doing so in a certified commercial kitchen. They are hopeful that while creating more room for soup processing, they will also be able to support other small businesses by making this requirement available locally.

Quality-Based Accreditation

Hospital is Certified to ISO 9001 Quality Management System

Brooks-TLC Hospital System has once again demonstrated its commitment to quality and patient safety by earning reaccreditation from DNV Healthcare USA Inc. and achieving certification through the National Integrated Care for Health (NICH) program. This recognition underscores the hospital’s adherence to rigorous patient safety standards established by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

DNV’s accreditation program is unique in integrating the ISO 9001 Quality Management System with CMS’s Conditions of Participation, setting a higher bar for continuous improvement in healthcare.

“The DNV program aligns with our long-term commitment to quality and patient safety,” said Julie Morton, Brooks-TLC’s chief operating officer and chief nursing officer. “Integrating ISO 9001 quality standards into our clinical and financial processes is a transformative step that ensures we consistently provide high-quality care to our community.”

“ISO 9001 certification not only reflects that mission, but helps to empower it. The certificate is just a piece of paper, but the effort required to achieve it fundamentally transforms the way

we do business. ISO 9001 is ideally suited to the complex, people-intensive challenges of running a hospital,” said Morton. Brooks-TLC Hospital System now has three years to fully implement ISO 9001 compliance—an internationally recognized quality management system that drives performance excellence and sustainability for organizations worldwide.

Kelly Proctor, President of DNV Healthcare USA Inc., emphasized the program’s value: “We take a different approach to accreditation, and hospitals are responding. Accreditation should be more than a checkbox exercise—it should drive real quality transformation. That’s exactly what ISO 9001 integration enables.”

Unlike traditional accreditation models that require hospitals to undergo surveys every three years, DNV’s NIAHO® (Integrated Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) program conducts annual hospital surveys. This approach encourages transparency, continuous improvement, and proactive enhancements to clinical workflows and safety protocols.

This reaccreditation comes on the heels of Brooks-TLC’s strategic restructuring of its nursing leadership and the addition of a new Clinical Effectiveness staff, a move that played a significant role in achieving this milestone. The hospital continues to make strides in aligning with the Kaleida Health System, further strengthening its commitment to excellence.

With this latest achievement, Brooks-TLC Hospital System reaffirms its dedication to keeping care close to home by delivering safe, high-quality care to the community while positioning itself for future growth and innovation.

From left, Lida Diaz-Bentham, ancillary system administrator; Tammy Mekus, director of clinical effectiveness; Kathy Dillenburg, director of nursing for outpatient services, risk manager & DNV lead; Pam Hilliker, clinical quality measure abstractor; Lucy Rosario, patient safety and infection control manager; and Alyssa McKillip, case manager/utilization review supervisor

The Red House

SERVES AS BARN WEDDING VENUE WITH A STEP BACK IN TIME

The RED (Retreat Event Destination) House in Cassadaga is a living piece of Chautauqua County’s past.

“I always feel shear relaxation and comfort when I come onto the property. The area I get the most internal feeling is when I cross the threshold into the kitchen,” says Nancy, the current owner. “I just wish the building could talk and I could learn more.”

She thinks about the women and their families who lived in the beautiful home and worked their farms with no indoor plumbing or electricity and wonders what their lives were like.

The elegant 19th century Victorian manor, with seven fireplaces, was built by the Denny Family in 1860. It is a very well preserved example of the detailed structures of the time with transom windows, bay windows and crafted hardwood floors.

Over the years, the house has been mentioned in several books and publications, such as Nineteenth Century Houses in Western New York, In The Rear Window and The Sittin’ Stone. These books, as well as articles, letters, and old photos are on display in the parlor for visitors to peruse.

Over the years the house has served many purposes. At one time it was the Homecroft Inn and at another it was connected to the Lily Dale Sanitarium. Also in it’s past it served as a reflection room and played an important role in the Freemason’s initiation ceremonies. Another interesting feature that used to exist at the house was a tunnel leading to Cassadaga Lake.

An open staircase decorated with dental crown molding work, is located inside the double front doors. Several bedrooms with fireplaces are found on the second level. A third-floor ballroom is often used to take pictures because of lighting and unique windows. Guests who climb the stairs to the cupola see the grounds from a

very different perspective and may see the deer and turkey that sometimes roam below.

The most popular use of the manor today is for the bride and groom to get ready on their big day, with the bride and her attendants using the front of the house and the groom and groomsmen using two rooms in the rear of the house that used to be the quarters for the hired help. There is a front and back staircase, so the groom doesn’t accidentally see his bride before the ceremony. Since 2022 the manor is also available for overnight stays for those visiting the area

The barn is the reception hot spot and if inclement weather brings the ceremony indoors if is a beautiful back drop for the ceremony. It is the perfect setting for formal or informal celebrations. The current barn was built in 1910, after the first one burned. It was built from blocks made by the Cassadaga Block Company which were made from gravel from Cassadaga Lake. The beams are built with peg construction and give a cathedral like feeling to the second floor.

The original elevator which utilizes a pulley system is a carryover from the old barn. Chandeliers light both floors. A covered open loft in the back brings in the outdoors through the big swing doors that mirror those in the front of the barn.

With the amazing manor and rustic barn the property is a great mix of the eloquence and casual comfort to the setting that is nestled on six parklike acres framed by deep woods. They have been the magical backdrop for a decade of wedding ceremonies and receptions.

The RED House which is located at 91 Frisbee Road in Cassadaga, is truly an area treasure to be experienced and enjoyed. For more information visit the website www.the-red-house. org, email Nancy@the-red-house.org, or call (716) 595-2450.

WLiving Glass

grape vineyards, history both local and national and its close proximity to Lake Erie and Lake Chautauqua, is quickly becoming a delightful downtown shopping attraction for food, art, and unique shops. In the center of downtown, at 50 Main Street, one can find the Living Glass Gallery. Within its bright and spacious storefront, underneath beautifully arched windows and architecture, owner and artist, Denise Williams- Stebbins, proudly displays artwork and gift items from local and regional artists. From beautiful paintings, unique stained glass, mixed media abstracts, to nature photography, handmade jewelry, pottery and turned wooden bowls, there is something for everyone. Living Glass Gallery is also known for its custom glass art designs where Denise will help turn your personal vision into beautiful glass for your kitchen,

also offers art classes at her on location studio and is currently focusing on the art of stained glass, using the Tiffany copper foil technique. Denise states: “Nature has always been the subject of my pieces; whether it is symbolized or implied, natural components will always be present. I believe nature provides the most intriguing element of design through form, structure and color. I try to interpret what I see and feel in this most captivating medium of glass. A stained glass window can be a wall of light that changes throughout the hours of the day following the strength and direction of the sun. As light changes so does the character of the stained glass. The effect of light on and through glass has no parallel. Although I have worked in many mediums, glass is my favorite and I have stuck with it faithfully for 32 years.

At my Living Glass studio I rely on one fact when designing; The interaction of light, color and texture produce an energy that seem to enhance ones imagination and so anything is possible!” Denise, is a former art teacher graciously retired after 31 years. Her approach to teaching in her studio is testimony to the dedication and support she provided her students at school. Denise has a special way of cultivating creativity no matter what age she teaches. That was always her goal in education and remains her goal as she continues expanding her gallery introducing new artists and supporting established artists in displaying their work. Currently there are 13 local artists in her gallery. Living Glass Gallery also features a new artist every month from June to December. Details for upcoming events are listed at LivingGlassGallery.Com. Living Glass Gallery, 50 Main Street. “The Most Charming Experience of Beautifully Crafted Art in Chautauqua County”. Merritt Estate

Whether looking for a relaxing day with friends, a way to boost company morale, or to celebrate a life event, Merritt Estate Winery has just what you need. Established in the rolling hills of Chautauqua County as a grape farm in the 1800s, Merritt Winery has a rich history and an even richer evolution.

Before the Farm Winery Act of 1976 by the New York State Legislature, wineries were limited to selling only 5% of their wine directly to consumers, with the rest having to go through wholesalers, which took a significant portion of the winery’s revenue. Before a law was enacted, there were only sixteen licensed wineries in New York State. Along with three small wineries, Bill Merritt and his father were instrumental in creating what would become the Farm Winery Act, launching the booming wine

industry we have today in New York State.

Bill Merritt, a graduate of Cornell University and later UC Davis for his winemaking education, still runs Merritt Winery with his son, Jason Merritt. Jason earned his degree in Culinary Arts from Paul Smith College in 1993. He returned to the winery in 1997, continuing to infuse his hospitality background and culinary skills into the winery’s vision. Together, they create exciting new wines, incorporate delicious food pairings, and plan to enhance the grounds to offer more to their loyal customers and new generations of aficionados who will enjoy the winery for decades.

As the winery grows and blazes new paths, one thing will always remain: our commitment to collaborate and support local businesses, NYS and PA wineries, and our local community.

Seasoned winemakers, a friendly and fun staff, and our resident bark-tender and fur therapist, Copper the Dog, greet everyone with the warmest welcome, like you’re family. We encourage you to explore our tasting room (open year-round, seven days a week), partake in our famous foodie events from January - May, book an event with us, and experience one of our fun annual community festivals! We also welcome tours and groups including limos and buses! Call us at 1-888-965-4800 to book your next adventure in Lake Erie wine country. And remember, the next time you dine out, ask your server for Merritt wine!

Upcoming events include May 2-4th, Foodie Event: Taco Bar, June 6-8th, Strawberry Festival, and September 6-7th, Septemberfest. Keep track of us on Facebook, Instagram, or our website, www.merittestatewinery.com, for the latest news from Merritt Winery!

Welcome to Warren County, Pennsylvania

WHERE THE FLAVOR OF NATURE WILL SATISFY YOUR SOUL

You would be hard-pressed to find a more relaxing experience than breathing in the fresh air of the Allegheny National Forest, watching bald eagles circle overhead while listening to the waves of the Allegheny Reservoir splashing on the bank’s mammoth boulders, and sipping locally-made wine.

Warren County boasts two wineries, two breweries, and a new wine lounge, all of which are popular with tourists and locals alike. The Brokenstraw Valley Winery is located in a charming chalet that was once a ski lodge located along Route 6. Popular wines include Raspberry Dragonfruit and their port-style dessert wines, but that’s just the beginning! They also offer some brewed beer and liquor for those who are so inclined. Allegheny Cellars Winery has uncorked savory deliciousness since it opened in 2007 with its nature and wildlife themes. The tasting room and gift shop reflect the woodsy feel of Warren County, and wine flavors add to the nostalgia with monikers like “Hearts Contentment,” “Rim Rock Red,” “Big Bend Blush,” “Kinzua Mist,” and “Golden Dew Drop.”

Those looking for local brews have options, too. Bent Run Brewing Co. is situated along the Allegheny River, allowing for outdoor deck-dining on the city’s edge or inside the renovated bar area. Whether you are on vacation or not, you will feel like you are when you are enjoying their award-winning ale, live music, and famous mountain pies! Wicked Warren’s is also located in downtown Warren and offers wood-fired pizzas and freshly brewed beers with indoor and outdoor seating in the heart of Warren’s downtown historic district which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Ribs n’ Bones, a local favorite, has a new outdoor beer garden, surrounded by the woods; and Docksiders overlooks the reservoir.

Warren’s new wine lounge, Twig & Vine, has been perfectly renovated to integrate the historical integrity of the building

with an urban flair. Enjoy a high-end wine selection accompanied by trays of deliciousness as you listen to the grand piano, live jazz performance, and friendly company.

Put these delicious experiences after a day of enjoying the Allegheny National Forest, Allegheny Reservoir, Kinzua Dam, Chapman State Park, and a wide range of outdoor activities, and you have yourself a perfect day! An outdoor enthusiast’s dream, Warren County boasts ample venues for hiking, biking, boating, kayaking, hunting, fishing, swimming, camping, birding, four-wheeling, golfing, shopping, walking, wining and dining, and, of course, just relaxing and catching your breath. A variety of unique shops and boutiques speckle the historic towns, giving you the chance to take a piece of Warren County home with you.

QUILTING STUDIO Concord

Concord Quilting Studio is located in the Village of Westfield, New York along the Lake Erie Wine Trail. We strive to offer our customers a friendly, welcoming, and happy quilt shop to visit and learn within.

The shop is owned and operated by Amber Laurie. She grew up working in her mother and sister’s quilt shop and knew one day that she wanted to open her own! The Studio was first started as a part-time longarm quilting business in 2010.

Slowly the Studio grew into the quilt shop it is today. Concord Quilting Studio officially opened with fabric and notions in July 2015 in our home and was a part of our family-owned grape farm. Since opening, the Studio has grown even bigger to include over 1500 bolts of quilt shop quality fabrics (Moda, Andover, Riley Blake, and Henry Glass) along with an assortment of patterns, sewing notions, quilt kits, and quilting supplies. In 2024, the Studio outgrew the space in our home and moved to a store front located at 15 East Main Street Westfield, New York.

Amber along with help from other talented quilters enjoys teaching quilting classes and getting new quilters started. We also look forward to helping others enjoy their experience with sewing and quilting.

We carry a large variety of fabric, kits, books, patterns, and notions. We offer classes, open sew days, demos, plenty of inspiring samples, and tons of encouragement and laughs!

The Studio also offers longarm quilting services to enhance your beautiful works of art.

The shop owner, Amber Laurie, provides longarm quilting services within the Studio. Amber started quilting with a Gamill quilter that she hand-guided following panto-graphs or quilting freehand designs. Amber upgraded to an Innova computerized machine in 2024. The edge-to-edge quilting can be completed with programmed patterns or freehand by Amber guiding the machine. There are many quilting designs to choose from when selecting the perfect quilting for your quilt. Bring your quilts into the Studio to discuss quilting pattern options and see the thread options we have. We can always order something new as well!

CLASSES

The Studio will be starting a new list of classes in May 2025. Please continue to check back often for updates on scheduled classes.
