Erika Booth, Tom Keen Set to Face Off in January General Election After House District 35 Primary Wins Osceola County School Board member Erika Booth will face Lake Nona businessman Tom Keen after both candidates received their political parties’ nods to move on to the State House District 35 general election on January 16, 2024.

Florida is a closed primary state, so only registered Republicans and Democrats who are in Florida’s House District 35 were able to vote in that race’s primary. District 35 includes parts of east Orange and east Osceola counties The seat was vacated by Fred Hawkins Jr. who resigned after accepting the position of President at South Florida State College.

In Osceola County, voters chose Erika Booth with 52.29% of the vote, over Scotty Moore with 38.32% and Ken Davenport with 9.4%. Tom Keen won with 38.98% of the vote in the Democratic primary, while Marucci Guzman got 33.01% and Rishi Bagga got 28.01% of the vote.

In Orange County, Democrats supported Keen with 35.44% of the vote over Bagga with 34.39% and Guzman with 30.16%. Republicans selected Booth with 48.06% of the vote over Moore with 31.31% and Davenport with 20.63% of the vote.

Four Injured in Kissimmee’s Toho Marina Boat Blaze, Investigation Ongoing The City of Kissimmee Fire Department responded to Big Toho Marina located at 69 Lakeview Drive at Kissimmee’s Lakefront around 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday night after receiving reports of a boat fire with possible injuries.

When KFD arrived they found a boat on a trailer in the parking lot of the Big Toho Marina fully engulfed in fire which they quickly extinguished.

NEWS Florida Gas Prices Move Lower After Rising 10 Cents Last Week, Uncertainty Ahead Florida gas prices increased last week, but are moving lower once again. After tying the 2023-low of $3.22 per gallon last Monday, the state average shot up 10 cents to $3.32 per gallon, by Wednesday.

The increase was in response to the rise in crude oil prices, which occurred two weeks ago. In Osceola, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.10.

Fortunately, crude oil prices fell last week, and gas prices are doing the same.

Florida’s state average declined 4 cents per gallon, Friday-Sunday. The state average was $3.29 per gallon on Sunday. Visit GasPrices.AAA.com to view today’s daily average price.

Osceola Sheriff’s Office Unveils New K9 Partnerships to Heighten Search and Rescue Operations for Missing Persons Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Senior Resource Alliance and Scent Evidence K9 to utilize two new scent discriminate bloodhounds and scent preservation kits to find people more quickly who go missing, Sheriff Marcos Lopez announced Wednesday.

As part of this new partnership, K9 brothers Doc and Luke will be joining the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit, thanks to the Senior Resource Alliance. Doc and Luke were trained by Scent Evidence K9 specially to search and locate missing individuals by using a person’s unique scent.

Playoff Time for the Kowboys, Bowl Time for the Bulldogs, Tigers!

Following an impressive road win over West Orange in their regular season finale, the Osceola Kowboys will participate in the FHSAA Playoffs for an impressive 17th consecutive time when they travel to Treasure Coast this Friday to take on the Titans (7-2) at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, fresh of their big 21-0 win over Harmony, St. Cloud (7-3) earned a Bowl Game. They will host Lake Region (5-5) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the first game played on the Bulldogs new turf field; while Tohopekaliga (5-5) will attempt to end the season on a positive note when they play a Bowl Game at Lake Howell at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

St. Bulldogs Take Soldier City Classic and Coveted Brass Bugle Trophy After Blanking Harmony 21-0 For the fourth time in five years and the 10th time since the rivalry began in 2005, the Brass Bugle Trophy is headed back to St. Cloud High. The Bulldogs earned it with a 21-0 win over arch-rival Harmony in the 19th playing of the Soldier City Classic before a big crowd at Austin Tindall Park on Friday night.

“That’s an ugly trophy,” a grinning St. Cloud coach Mike Short said as his players passed it around for pictures. “But it’s going to look great in our trophy case for the next year.

Lady Bulldogs make history with back-2back-2-back state golf appearances For a third straight year, the St. Cloud girls’ golf team is headed to the state golf championships and this time they did not need to wait around for an at-large bid.

The Lady Bulldogs, behind sophomore Karolyna Adams’ two-over par 74, tied Lake Nona for Class 3A, Region 2 golf championship on Tuesday morning.

St. Cloud would lose the regional championship in a playoff, as Lake Nona shot a team-collective even par 20 on the first playoff hole; compared to a one-over par 21 by the Lady Bulldogs. Still, the official second place regional finish earned St. Cloud an automatic spot in the FHSAA State Golf Championships, Nov. 10-11.

Osceola Kowboys Down Titans in Girls Volleyball, Jupiter Up Next in State Playoffs Occasionally a loss can also provide some needed momentum.

Such was the case during Saturday afternoon’s FHSAA Class 7A, Region 2 semifinal, when the Osceola volleyball team used a third game loss to Olympia as incentive to win big in the fourth as the Kowboys advanced to the regional championship game with a 25-21, 2523, 23-25, 25-17 victory over the Titans.

The win propelled the Kowboys (23-6) into a Wednesday evening showdown at Jupiter (24-3), where they will attempt to win their second consecutive regional championship. The Warriors, the region’s top seed, earned their way to the title game with a five-set win over Ft. Pierce Central.

Parkinson’s Support in Action: Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute offering free community exercise classes for Parkinson’s patients Local patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease now have access to free fitness classes tailored to their medical needs, thanks to the Orlando Health Advanced Rehabilitation Institute and grant funding from the Parkinson Association of Central Florida. Patients do not need a physician referral to join the classes.

The fitness classes meet every other Monday from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm near the Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute, with Orlando Health neurologic physical therapists providing the exercise instruction. The classes include aerobic exercise, strength training, balance training, and more. Attendees should wear active clothes and bring water. They are also asked to have a care partner attend with them if they require additional physical assistance.

NEWS St. Cloud Mayor Nathan Blackwell Appointed to Florida League of Cities Legislative Committee City of St. Cloud Mayor Nathan Blackwell has been appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities Legislative Committee as the Tri-County League of Cities representative.

The Legislative Committee reviews the recommended legislative priorities of the League’s five legislative policy committees. Based on this review, the Legislative Committee votes on a proposed Legislative Platform, which is then submitted to the full League membership for consideration and adoption.

Mayor Blackwell also serves on FLC’s Board of Directors, and is the first St. Cloud Council member to do so.

But before you start working out, it helps to know which bone-strengthening exercises deliver the greatest benefit.

Osteoporosis — bone-density loss — affects one in three women older than 50, and one in five men will experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetimes.

Osteoporosis slowly weakens your bones to the point where they easily break. It’s referred to as a “silent disease” because you often don’t know it’s happening until you break a bone. Osteoporosis commonly causes fractures in the hip, spine and wrist.

WHY WE LOSE BONE MASS As a living tissue, bones continually rebuild themselves to maintain strength. How? Your body breaks down existing bone and then restores it with new bone tissue.

It also helps to understand “the bone turnover cycle.” When you’re young, you build more bone than you lose. But as you age, you start to lose more bone than you build.

For women, bone loss increases after menopause as they lose hormones, causing a precipitous decline in bone mineral density. For men, especially those with low testosterone, osteoporosis usually happens a bit later — generally around age 65 or 70.

The development of osteoporosis is accelerated during this natural aging process and causes the bones to become thinner, more brittle and subject to breaks during a fall.
