MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE

Florida Governor DeSantis signs bill focused on making Florida schools safer Governor Ron DeSantis has signed HB 1421, intended to improve school safety in Florida by building on legislation over the last three years to implement the additional recommendations of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission to make schools safer and improve youth mental health in Florida. Governor DeSantis also approved $140 million for mental health and $210 million for school safety, including school hardening grants and youth mental health awareness and assistance training. “Every child needs a safe and secure learning environment,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “By signing HB 1421, we continue to build on the many steps we have taken since 2019 to implement the recommendations of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission, while also making record investments in mental health and school safety.” “Every parent deserves to know their child is safe at school,” said Tony Montalto, President of Stand with Parkland. “This new law, which passed unanimously through the Florida Legislature, is an important next step in providing school safety assurances to families and students. Florida will continue to do everything possible to make sure our schools meet the highest safety standards and that mental health issues associated with school violence are being addressed.”t HB 1421 does the following: • Extends the sunset of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission; • Authorizes the Commissioner of Education to enforce, rather than just oversee, school safety and security compliance; • Authorizes safe school officers to make arrests on charter school property; • Requires all safe school officers to complete crisis intervention and training to improve knowledge and skills for response and de-escalate incidents on school premises;

149TH SILVER SPURS RODEO Silver Spurs Bosses Lead Local Non-profit Riding Club Into a Prosperous, Caring, and Giving Future The 149th Silver Spurs Rodeo is in the history books, and once again, it wasn’t just a success from a rodeo perspective, it was a success from a community perspective. On June 3rd and 4th, the stands in the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee were filled with rodeo fans from Osceola County and all over the Southeast, and what they saw and felt was a rodeo that isn’t just in the community, it’s part of the community. Every Silver Spurs Rodeo is an action packed event, with all seven traditional rodeo events wowing the crowds one after another, but the riding club places just as much emphasis on stepping back and say thank you, to our veterans, to those in need, and to organizations who are caring for those in need. This year, that included the 2022 Special Olympics USA games, who were given an opportunity to utilize the Silver Spurs Arena for the Special Olympics Equestrian events. Dustin Bronson, who served and the Big Boss for the final time during the 149th Silver Spurs Rodeo, is a seventh-generation Osceola County resident, and a member of a pioneer cattle family of Osceola County. Bronson is no stranger to rodeo or the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Growing up in the Silver Spurs Riding Club and a grandson of one of the founding members, Charles “Shang” Bronson, Dustin is a third-generation “Big Boss” and was excited to carry on the family tradition, and to eventually watch his two boys follow in his footsteps.

FAMILY LAW Common Myths About Florida Divorces

Whether you are thinking about leaving your marriage or have just been served with divorce papers, when you have the wrong information about what to expect, this already tense situation becomes more difficult. However, by knowing some of the common myths about Florida divorce, you can avoid unnecessary stress and confusion. Committing Adultery Means Losing Everything Florida is a “no-fault” divorce state which means that neither party’s role in causing the marriage to end will be a basis for filing for divorce. This does not mean, however, that adultery is irrelevant during a Florida divorce. If the unfaithful party has used marital resources in connection with their affair, the court can consider this fact when deciding how to divide the couple’s property and debts. Additionally, the court can look at the financial harm which the unfaithful spouse caused the other when determining whether or not to award alimony.

REAL ESTATE Goodwin Realty: Why Home Loans Today Aren’t What They Were in the Past In today’s housing market, many are beginning to wonder if we’re returning to the riskier lending habits and borrowing options that led to the housing crash 15 years ago. Let’s ease those concerns. Several times a year, the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) releases an index titled the Mortgage Credit Availability Index (MCAI). According to their website: “The MCAI provides the only standardized quantitative index that is solely focused on mortgage credit. The MCAI is . . . a summary measure which indicates the availability of mortgage credit at a point in time.” Basically, the index determines how easy it is to get a mortgage. The higher the index, the more available mortgage credit becomes. Here’s a graph of the MCAI dating back to 2004, when the data first became available: As the graph shows, the index stood at about 400 in 2004. Mortgage credit became more available as the housing market heated up, and then the index passed 850 in 2006. When the real estate market crashed, so did the MCAI as mortgage money became almost impossible to secure. Thankfully, lending standards have eased somewhat since then, but the index is still low. In April, the index was at 121, which is about oneseventh of what it was in 2006. Why Did the Index Get out of Control During the Housing Bubble? The main reason was the availability of loans with extremely weak lending standards. To keep up with demand in 2006, many mortgage lenders offered loans that put little emphasis on the eligibility of the borrower. Lenders were approving loans without always going through a verification process to confirm if the borrower would likely be able to repay the loan.

SPORTS UCF Knights to compete in AAC for one more athletic year UCF will compete in the American Athletic Conference for one more athletic season, then transition to membership in the Big 12 Conference beginning in 2023-24. That became official today with the announcement by AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco that The American and UCF have reached an agreement regarding UCF’s departure from The American and its subsequent move to the Big 12. Under the terms of the agreement, The American’s member institutions voted, in accordance with conference bylaws, to end UCF’s membership, effective July 1, 2023. Joining UCF in the move from the AAC will be the University of Cincinnati and the University of Houston. “First, I would like to thank Mike Aresco and the leadership of the American Athletic Conference for its cooperation as all three schools worked through this matter over recent months,” said Terry Mohajir, UCF vice president and director of athletics. “UCF teams in the American have produced many championships and other memorable moments. The 2022-23 athletics seasons will conclude a full decade for UCF in the AAC, and we are proud of the contributions we’ve made to grow and enhance the stature of the conference. We’re proud to participate and compete in this very competitive league for one more year. “We are pleased that we were able to conclude these negotiations and now confirm our transition to Big 12 Conference membership for 2023-24.” Added Aresco, “I would like to thank UCF President Alexander Cartwright, Cincinnati President Neville Pinto and Houston President Renu Khatour—as well as Tulane President Michael Fitts, who is chair of our Board of Directors–for their efforts and leadership to arrive at a sensible resolution to the three schools’ departure from the conference. All three institutions enjoyed tremendous success under the American Athletic Conference banner, and all three were instrumental in taking the conference to great heights, both athletically and academically.

POINT OF SALE IN OSCEOLA COUNTY

WHAT IS POINT OF SALE? When we say “Point of Sale,” we’re referring to marketing and promoting tobacco products in retail environments – like gas stations, convenience stores, and other retail outlets.

SOME TACTICS THEY USE ARE: Discounting products, appealing to children and young adults.

POINT OF SALE IS THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY’S MAIN MARKETING METHOD.

Paying retailers for prime product location and advertising. Targeting lower-income communities.

WHY IS POINT OF SALE IMPORTANT?

Studies show that tobacco use is associated with exposure to retail advertising and relatively easy access to tobacco products.

Schools with a higher number of tobacco retailers nearby tend to have higher smoking rates.

More cigarettes are sold in convenience stores than in any other type of store.

WHAT IS OSCEOLA COUNTY DOING?

We are implementing tobacco education and prevention to create awareness within our community. This includes educating local decision makers about the local tobacco retail environment which includes information about product placement and the amount of tobacco retailers near schools.

Orlando Health: Parents Urged To Keep Following SIDS Guidelines Pediatricians are urging parents to continue following CDC guidelines to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome after a recent study grabbed headlines that incorrectly suggested the cause of SIDS had been discovered. Each year in the United States, about 3,400 babies die unexpectedly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These deaths of infants under a year old include SIDS as well as accidental suffocation while sleeping and other unknown causes.

Australian researchers identified a potential link between low levels of the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase and the likelihood of SIDS. However, at this early stage, it’s too soon to make recommendations based on one study with a sample size of 722 babies. Many babies in the Australian study who died from SIDS did have low levels of the identified enzyme, but many others who also had low levels of the enzyme are still alive and healthy.

We’re basically in charge of anything related to healthcare, and it even goes a little bit beyond that,” says Dr. Michael Jablonski, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute. Dr. Jablonski regularly provides care to professional and collegiate athletes in the area. This week he’s serving as the chief medical officer for the event on June 5-12 held at multiple venues in Central Florida. Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, is working hand in hand with the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games. “We wanted to partner with the Special Olympics and the Games because we are about inclusion,” D’Ortona says. Dr. Jablonski is determined to give athletes and their delegations the most sweeping medical coverage Special Olympians have ever experienced.

POSITIVELY DELICIOUS Florida Chicken, Mushroom and Bacon Melt, It’s Positively Delicious! Did you say bacon? Well, if you didn’t we did! And we said it like this… fried chicken, mushroom, and BACON melt. Yes, a bacon melt. If you’ve never had one… this is the one to try, because we think you’ll agree. It’s Positively Delicious! INGREDIENTS • 3-4 Florida chicken breasts • 1 (8-ounce) container Florida mushrooms, thinly sliced • 6 strips thick-cut bacon • 4 slices Havarti cheese • 1-2 tablespoons all-purpose seasoning (your favorite) • 1-2 tablespoons unsalted butter • 4-6 sprigs fresh thyme • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste PREPARATION Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Season chicken breasts with all-purpose seasoning on both sides and set aside. Preheat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat and cook bacon until crisp. Remove from heat and set aside. Using same pan and rendered bacon grease, sear chicken for 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from pan and place into casserole dish or sheet pan. Place a slice of cheese over each, place in oven and continue to cook for about 10 minutes or until internal thermometer reads 165 degrees. While chicken is in the oven, sauté the mushrooms in the same pan with any leftover pan drippings and butter. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon thyme leaves, salt and pepper. Add in the crumbled bacon and mix to combine. Assemble dish by garnishing each piece of chicken with a spoonful of the mushroom and bacon mixture over top.
