Commissioner Choudhry presents $500,000 grant to”Pathway to Housing” program to assist those “precariously housed” Purchasing a home has become increasingly challenging, and expensive around the country. Osceola County is no exception. The COVID-19 pandemic, paired with inflation and a lack of homes on the market, have made it very difficult for families and individuals in Osceola County to purchase their own home.
Osceola County Commissioner Peggy Choudhry hosted a news conference on Monday, emceed by her daughter Athena, that introduced a new initiative managed by the Salvation Army called “A Pathway to Housing” The program is designed to assist people who are “precariously housed” so they can transition to purchase their own home. The commissioner allocated $500,000 towards the program as part of her county betterment funds, bringing the initiative’s funds to $1 Million. “This is a major step in my commitment to helping residents realize the American Dream of homeownership,” Choudhry said. “We have some amazing partners, and this program is an opportunity to set people on a path that has only gotten more difficult as inflation has raised rents and the market price of houses. I believe that we will see an immediate positive change in the lives of those in this program.”

Kissimmee Police, Osceola Deputies Join Operation Best Foot Forward to Protect Kissimmee Trail Users
As the school year winds down and summer vacations begin, drivers need to be extra cautious and should expect more people biking and walking as residents and visitors lace up their sneakers to enjoy the more than 450 miles of local trails in Central Florida. On Tuesday May 10th, Kissimmee Police and Osceola Sheriff’s Office Deputies joined nine other law enforcement agencies across Central Florida in enforcing Florida’s driver yield laws during the largest crosswalk enforcement in Central Florida history. Drivers who fail to yield or stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks received warnings or citations to spotlight the importance of staying alert at all trail crossings.

Poinciana High students make “Prom Promise” after witnessing simulated prom night drunk-driving crash
High School proms are meant to be filled with joy, celebrating, and the creating of wonderful memories. Unfortunately, this very special night of celebration is often mixed with alcohol and/or drug use, which can tragically lead to lives being changed forever, or even worse – lost forever. A Prom Promise event recently took place at Poinciana High School, designed to show how a seemingly simple decision can lead to a horrific tragedy. The prom promise was attended by mostly Poinciana Seniors, and was an opportunity for students to make a literal “commitment” to be drug and alcohol free, especially on Prom Night. Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS organized the event that was designed to discourage drunk driving through a simulated Osceola Fire Rescue and FHP vehicle crash response, an Orlando Health Air Care Team helicopter airlift, a DUI arrest by FHP, and a bold message from Trooper Steve that driving under the influence is never ever acceptable. Nearly 800 Floridians were killed in 2021 by those driving under the influence, but with the help of the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Highway Patrol, Orlando Health Air Care Team, Funeraria San Juan, and Trooper Steve – who did an extraordinary job as emcee, students will hopefully be able to better understand the consequences of driving while intoxicated. Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band takes first in Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition in New York The Osceola School for the Arts Jazz band traveled to compete at New York’s Lincoln Center for Essentially Ellington May 5-7, the nation’s premier jazz education event and competition. When they return to Osceola County on Monday, they’ll do so as winners after coming in first over 15 other high school jazz bands in the competition. “What an amazing experience we had over the past few days in New York. Congratulations to all of the students, families and supporters of the OCSA jazz program. It was an exhausting week, but all of the hard work that Mr. Jason Anderson and the absolutely amazing students in Jazz A was rewarded last night with earning 1st place in the Essentially Ellington Competition and Festival,” Assistant Principal at the Osceola County School for the Arts Mark Conners said – who traveled with the ensemble to NYC. Duke Ellington’s music is at the very heart of America’s 20th-century musical heritage and the core of the rich canon of jazz music. Jazz at Lincoln Center, committed to instilling a broader understanding of this music, created the Essentially Ellington program (EE) during the 1995–96 school year to make Ellington’s music accessible to as many high school musicians as possible and to support the development of their schools’ music programs.

Osceola County to Hold Public Meeting Thursday to Assess Routes for Extension of Celebration Boulevard Osceola County will hold an in-person public meeting on Thursday, May 12 at 6 p.m. regarding the Celebration Boulevard Extension Project. Osceola County is assessing alternative routes for the extension of Celebration Boulevard from C.R. 532 to the southern boundary of Celebration. This feasibility study will evaluate three proposed alignments, including proposed drainage pond locations. The facility is anticipated to be a 2-lane avenue with 11-foot travel lanes, a 16-foot median, as well as bicycle and pedestrian features. The study involves a range of engineering assessments, environmental analysis, and public involvement to ultimately arrive at a preferred alternative while minimizing impacts to the surrounding environment and the citizens of Osceola County.

NEWS Osceola County announces Old Melbourne Highway road resurfacing beginning Monday, May 16th Osceola County has tentatively scheduled for resurfacing Old Melbourne Highway: U.S. Highway 192 to end of pavement on Monday, May 16th through Friday, May 27th. Work will be performed daily from 8 am to 5 pm with schedules varying based on weather conditions or equipment-related issues. There will be temporary lane closures but no road closures, and traffic delays can be expected in the area.
Gas prices continue to rise across Florida as demand and oil prices increase The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by five cents to $4.24, while Florida is at $4.20, and Osceola is 5 cents less at 4.15 for a gallon. According to new data from the Energy Information Administration, increasing gas demand and rising oil prices have pushed pump prices higher. Prices at the pump will likely face more upward pressure as oil prices remain above $105 per barrel. St. Cloud CRA launches Paint, Plant, & Pave Program, CRA Downtown area residents can receive $2000 St. Cloud’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has launched its Paint, Plant, and Pave Program–home improvement grant to assist single-family and multi-family 2- unit properties within the residential neighborhoods of the St. Cloud CRA Downtown area. This program is created to provide curb appeal to single-family and multi-family 2-unit properties in disrepair in residential neighborhoods of the St. Cloud CRA Downtown area. Proposed improvements may include pressure cleaning, painting, minor façade repairs, landscaping, awnings, sidewalks, driveways and/or parking lot sealing, irrigation systems, fence repair or removal, and minor interior repairs affected by exterior improvements. SPORTS The 149th Silver Spurs Rodeo rides into Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee June 3rd – 4th The Silver Spurs Riding Club will host their 149th Silver Spurs Rodeo Friday, June 3 & Saturday, June 4 at 7:30 pm in the Silver Spurs Arena at Osceola Heritage Park. Fans will be treated to seven of rodeo’s traditional events: bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, women’s barrel racing, steer wrestling and team roping. For the second year now, breakaway roping will be added to the event schedule. In addition to this great tradition, the June rodeo will present junior barrel racing, junior bull riding and the junior quadrille (square dancing on horseback). These events feature our youth who are starting their rodeo careers in the Silver Spurs Arena! The 149th Silver Spurs Rodeo will also feature everyone’s favorite event before the performance, ‘mutton bustin’ (also known as sheep racing)! “We are looking forward to this summer’s rodeo, since this is how the Silver Spurs Rodeo and our community kicks off the summer break from school, highlighting our local youth in bull riding, barrel racing, and quadrille,” said Dustin Bronson, Big Boss of the Silver Spurs Riding Club. “This has been a tradition since 1944 in Osceola County, so come out to the Rodeo in June for one of the longest-running traditions east of the Mississippi.” Single night tickets are just $20 per adult and kids 10 and under are FREE with a new “Joint Performance” ticket that includes two performances for $30. All active and retired military receive FREE admission at the June 3, 4. Please bring proof of military service to the Silver Spurs Arena box office. Grand Slam Sends Osceola Kowboys to Season Ending 8-4 Loss Austin Fawley keyed a five-run rally in the second inning with a grand slam home run to key Park Vista to an 8-4 win over Osceola in an FHSAA Region 3 quarterfinal on Tuesday night. With Osceola leading 2-1, Park Vista had the bases loaded with two outs when Fawley connected off of Osceola reliever Anthony Melendez on a fly ball to deep right center that rode the wind – barely clearing the fence for his eighth home run of the season. The Cobras would up the lead to 7-2 an inning later, as Peyton Samuels walked and Javi Sato pounded a long home run to left. “It was really the key to the game,” Osceola coach Blake Birchler said. “They were able to get the key hits when they needed them and we just could not answer with that big hit or two when we needed it.” Osceola would leave 10 men on base in the game, with nine of them being stranded in scoring position. Five times the Kowboys would put runners on second or second and third, only to see the inning end on a strikeout. The game started out great for the Kowboys as Isaiah Jena-Baptiste opened the game with a walk and went to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Nick Palmi would score him on a bunt single and would come around to score himself on a Blake Birchler double.

Beginning May 27, 2022, guests visiting EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort better get ready to crank up the mixtape and blast off on an awesome intergalactic chase through time and space in Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind! This new family-thrill coaster matches the “grandosity” and fun of the blockbuster “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, featuring those legendary cosmic outlaws – Rocket, Groot, Drax, Gamora and Star-Lord (a.k.a. Peter Quill). The innovative attraction is another major milestone in the ongoing transformation of EPCOT and debuts as part of the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration. Located in the park’s newly renamed World Discovery neighborhood, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is the first “other-world” showcase pavilion at EPCOT.

SeaWorld named top Theme Park in the nation, Ice Breaker is best new attraction
The votes are in, and after tabulating the results, SeaWorld was voted the best theme park in North America, according to results from the online poll. Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay, also placed in the top ten by coming in fifth in the poll.
The remaining theme parks that made the 10 list include Silver Dollar City (Branson, Missouri), Kings Island (Mason, Ohio), Busch Gardens Williamsburg, Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio), Dollywood (Pigeon Forge, Tennessee), Six Flags Magic Mountain (Valencia, California), Holiday World (Santa Claus, Indiana) and HersheyPark (Hershey, Pennsylvania). SeaWorld’s Ice Breaker coaster got the win in the best new attraction after debuted in February and narrowly beat out nearby Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster at Peppa Pig Theme Park.

POSITIVELY DELICIOUS Florida Grouper Sandwich with New Potato Salad, It’s Positively Delicious! Florida seafood, it’s so good, and there are so many different ways to prepare it. It’s one of the many blessings we get to enjoy as Floridians or for those who are visiting. There’s one thing for sure, and we think you’ll agree… it’s Positively Delicious. INGREDIENTS Florida Grouper Sandwich • 8 (3-ounce) Florida grouper fillets, sliced thin • 2 Florida tomatoes, sliced • 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning • 8 small rolls • 1 small head romaine lettuce, shredded • 1 red onion, sliced thin • 1 tablespoon oil for cooking • ⅓ cup mayonnaise • ½ lemon, juiced • 1 teaspoon paprika • Cayenne pepper to taste • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste • Florida New Potato Salad • 6 cups Florida new potatoes, quartered, cooked and cooled • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise

POSITIVELY DELICIOUS Florida Tomato Stacker Salad, it’s Positively Delicious! Florida tomatoes, fresh, sweet, loaded with anti-oxidants and just plain ol’ Positively Delicious. Take one bite and you can almost taste the sunshine that ripened them on the vine. Whether you toss them into a salad, on a pizza, or on a delicious sandwich, Florida tomatoes are Positively Delicious! Check out the recipe: INGREDIENTS 2 medium-sized ripe Florida tomatoes, sliced thick 4 ounces Florida arugula ⅔ cup plain yogurt 4 ounces crumbled blue cheese (plus more for garnish) 2 cloves fresh garlic, chopped fine ½ lemon, juiced 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar ½ red onion, sliced thin 6 strips thick-cut bacon, cooked crispy 1 teaspoon fresh chives, chopped fine (optional) Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste PREPARATION In a mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, blue cheese, garlic, lemon juice and vinegar. Stir ingredients to combine. Taste dressing and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Keep dressing refrigerated until it’s time to use it. Place an even amount of the arugula on each plate. Season the sliced tomatoes with salt and pepper. Layer the tomato slice, red onion and bacon vertically until all the slices of tomato are used. Make sure to reserve one slice of bacon to crumble over the top of the salad. Add the preferred amount of dressing to each tomato stacker salad.
