NEWS Osceola High to offer AP Capstone Diploma Program, focusing on developing skills for college and career success Osceola High School will join approximately 2,000 schools worldwide in the Fall Semester of 2022 that implement the AP Capstone Diploma™ program―an innovative program that launched in 2014 and encourages students to develop skills for college and career success, including critical thinking, research, collaboration, and communication. The program consists of two yearlong courses taken in sequence: AP® Seminar and AP Research. The pathway to the Capstone program at Osceola High is called Kowboy Advanced Placement Scholars (KAPS). Students who score a 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on 4 additional AP Exams of their choosing earn the AP Capstone Diploma. This signifies outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills. Students who score a 3 or higher in both AP Seminar and AP Research (and not on 4 additional AP Exams) earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™. Osceola High will start offering AP Seminar in the fall of 2022. In AP Seminar, typically taken in 10th or 11th grade, students choose real-world topics and evaluate them from multiple perspectives. Students identify credibility and bias in sources and develop arguments in support of a recommendation. “The AP Capstone program will prepare our diverse student population to become skilled collaborators, critical thinkers, and consumers of information,: said Osceola School District Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace. “The Capstone courses will give students flexibility to explore the complex topics affecting their lives, and we are excited to see their research.” In the subsequent AP Research course, students design and execute a college-level research project on a topic of personal interest. Students receive firsthand experience in writing a research question, executing an appropriate method, analyzing data, presenting their results, and defending their findings.

FAMILY LAW Parental Alienation and Your Child In an ideal world, parents would be able to work together after divorce to raise their children and support each other’s relationship. Sadly, sometimes divorce can bring out the worst in parents causing them to make bad choices when it comes to what they say to and around their kids. Over time, a parent’s comments can cause their children to become emotionally distant from or even refuse to see the other parent. When one parent tries to turn a child against the other parent, it can be devastating to the parent-child relationship. However, there are steps you can take to protect your child and your relationship with them. The term “Parental Alienation Syndrome” or PAS, coined by child psychiatrist Dr. Richard A. Gardner, is essentially when one parent makes outrageous and concerted attempts to turn their child against the other parent.

REAL ESTATE Where Are Mortgage Rates Headed in Central Florida? Coming into this year, most experts projected mortgage rates would gradually increase and end 2022 in the high three-percent range. It’s only April, and rates have already blown past those numbers. Freddie Mac announced last week that the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is already at 4.72%. Danielle Hale, Chief Economist at realtor.com, tweeted on March 31: “Continuing on the recent trajectory, would have mortgage rates hitting 5% within a matter of weeks. . . .” Just five days later, on April 5, the Mortgage News Daily quoted a rate of 5.02%. No one knows how swiftly mortgage rates will rise moving forward. However, at least to this point, they haven’t significantly impacted purchaser demand. Ali Wolf, Chief Economist at Zonda, explains: “Mortgage rates jumped much quicker and much higher than even the most aggressive forecasts called for at the end of last year, and yet housing demand appears to be holding steady.” Through February, home prices, the number of showings, and the number of homes receiving multiple offers all saw a substantial increase. However, much of the spike in mortgage rates occurred in March. We will not know the true impact of the increase in mortgage rates until the March housing numbers become available in early May. Rick Sharga, EVP of Market Intelligence at ATTOM Data, recently put rising rates into context: “Historically low mortgage rates and higher wages helped offset rising home prices over the past few years, but as home prices continue to soar and interest rates approach five percent on a 30-year fixed rate loan, more consumers are going to struggle to find a property they can comfortably afford.”

Stop Throwing Away Leftovers — Do This Instead!
you probably didn’t think twice about it.
What food did you throw away this week? Perhaps you tossed wilted spinach, a few apples sporting brown spots, and the stir-fry leftovers you never got around to eating. If you’re like most Americans,
Food waste is a huge problem in most households. In fact, according to 2018 estimates, roughly 42.8 million tons of wasted food ended up in landfills — about 68 percent of all wasted food we generate. Fortunately, you can do something about it. You can take steps to not only reduce food waste, but to also increase your healthy eating along the way. This can positively affect your family, your community and the planet. Why Food Waste Hurts Us All Throwing away food means wasting your hard-earned money. But it hurts more than your bank account. U.S. food waste is estimated to be between 30 percent to 40 percent of the food supply, with far-reaching impacts: • Wholesome food that could have fed hungry families and improved some of the food insecurity in our communities is being sent to landfills. • Throwing food away wastes all the resources (land, water and labor) used to get it on your table, plus all the energy and other materials used to process, package, transport and store the food. Turn Scraps into Healthy Meals It’s easy to wrap up your leftovers after dinner with good intentions but end up throwing them away at the end of the week. What can you do? Try these ideas: • Add leftover vegetables or stems from a vegetable — think broccoli stalks — to a vegetable soup, casserole or stir fry. • Toss wilted spinach and overripe bananas into smoothies. • Mash overripe bananas and mix them with almond milk, egg whites and a scoop of protein powder to make a pancake mix.

U.S. Army to Host Department of Defense Warrior Games at ESPN Wide World of Sports The 2022 Department of Defense Warrior Games, hosted by the U.S. Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, will take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla. from August 19-28. “On behalf of the U.S. Army, we are truly honored to host the Department of Defense 2022 Warrior Games,” said Gen. Paul Funk II, commander of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. “Our incredible Warrior-Athletes have overcome tremendous obstacles and we are excited to watch their resiliency and dedication in action. They represent the very best of our Nation.” The annual event, first held in 2010, celebrates the resiliency and dedication of wounded, ill, and injured active duty and veteran U.S. military service members. Hundreds of elite-athletes, including those from international allied nations, will compete in adaptive sporting events such as wheelchair basketball, cycling, indoor rowing, and sitting volleyball among others during the games. ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, donated for use and serving as a Warrior Games venue for the first time, is a 220-acre facility that features multiple indoor and outdoor competition sites that previously hosted the 2016 Invictus Games. This award-winning complex combines the spirit of sports with Disney magic, making it the perfect host venue for this year’s events. The DoD Warrior Games was scheduled to take place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in 2021 but was cancelled due to COVID concerns. “These courageous service members, injured during their military duty, have demonstrated their resilience and an ability to overcome unthinkable obstacles,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “They are the truest definition of the warrior’s spirit, and we are honored to welcome them to the Warrior Games at ESPN Wide World of Sports this summer.”
