Coach Bryan Smart Era Ends for St. Cloud Bulldogs, Next Chapter Begins In a major shift for St. Cloud, Head Football Coach Bryan Smart resigned his post on Thursday to become the school’s next athletic director. The move came several weeks after AD Eric Godfrey stepped down to assume another leadership position at the school. “There were a ton of considerations, both pro and con for stepping down as football coach and pursuing this opportunity. From a professional standpoint, it was an opportunity to make an impact on the entire athletic program at St. Cloud and not just the football team,” Smart said. “From a personal standpoint, I have an 11-year-old son who is starting to get into youth sports. This move will allow me to spend more time coaching and working with him. On the negative side, I am going to miss football and working with my players. Friday night football is so special and it’s hard to walk away.” Smart came to St. Cloud from his native New Jersey 11 years ago when he accepted a teaching and assistant football coaching position. He was named head coach in 2013 and compiled a 47-42 record in nine years – recording five winning seasons and two years with seven or more wins. His St. Cloud team’s record 7-3 records in both 2020 and 2015 and went 7-4 in 2015. Hit heavily with graduation losses and serious season-ending injuries to several key players, his 2021 team was decimated before the season began and scored just 16 points in their first five games. But the Bulldogs rallied back to win two of their last four – including a 31-30 upset over heavily-favored Harmony in the season-finale.

MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE Osceola Library System to Host English for Families at BVL Library beginning March 21st English for Families is a weekly family reading program designed for those whose native language is not English (ESOL). This 10-week program will be offered on Mondays at 6 pm at the Buenaventura Lakes Library beginning March 21, 2022. Families are encouraged to attend each of the 10 sessions to benefit fully from the curriculum. In this fun and engaging weekly program, parents and children will explore and practice specific reading strategies using various children’s stories. Parents and children will also learn vocabulary and basic grammar to use at each session to help increase confidence and fluency. Participating families that complete the full 10 weeks will receive two free books at the end of the last session. Registration is required for each week of the 10-week program. NEWS Former Orange-Osceola top prosecutor Aramis Ayala to run for attorney general Former state attorney for Orange and Osceola counties, Aramis Ayala, is making a run for Florida attorney general. The Florida Division of Elections website shows Ayala now taking on incumbent Ashley Moody and fellow Democrat Jim Lewis. Ayala made national news while top prosecutor for the Ninth Judicial Circuit when she announced she would not seek the death penalty against Markeith Loyd, who was convicted last year for killing Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton. Lloyd was sentenced to death recently. Before deciding to run for Florida attorney general, Ayala was planning to run for U.S. House District 10, the Congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Val Demings, who is running for Senate against incumbent Marco Rubio. Rick Scott, who was governor at the time, took death penalty cases away from Ayala’s office and moved them to another state attorney, including Loyd’s case. Ayala also helped form a coalition to help domestic violence awareness and to fight against child abuse.
Florida gas prices continue to rise to new alltime high, slightly above national average Setting records is usually a good thing, but in Florida and around the nation we are currently setting records for high prices of gas… not a good thing. The average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. is up to $4.31, while in Florida it’s a few cents higher at $4.35. Osceola county’s average is a penny higher at $4.36, according to the latest numbers from the American Automobile Association (AAA). Already high gas prices jumped even higher after President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. would be banning the import of all Russian oil. Floridians already struggling with high prices all-around are now having to deal with record gas prices. The increase in gas demand and a reduction in total supply contribute to rising pump prices.

Osceola Sheriff’s Office arrests mother for premeditated murder of her 4-year-old daughter at Kissimmee resort A mother who was found unresponsive next to her dead 4-year-old daughter in the Star Island Resort in Kissimmee on January 10th was arrested Wednesday and charged with the premeditated murder of her daughter, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office announced. The two were found next to each other in a bed in the resort by deputies who were there for a well-being check after the mother, Jacinda Decaro, didn’t show up for work that day. A note was found on the nightstand in the room with the words, “I’m sorry.” When security entered the hotel room they found Jacinda and her 4-year-old daughter Masiela in the room unresponsive. Jacinda had a faint pulse, but sadly, Masiela was dead. Jacinda was transported to Advent Health Celebration for emergency care and Masiela was declared dead on the scene. “The night of the murder, the suspect talked about suicide to several different people, told an ex-boyfriend that she didn’t want to live. She also FaceTimed another friend the same evening and talked about not wanting to be here,” Lopez said at Wednesday’s news conference. “The doors were all locked from the inside when we attempted to make contact with all parties,” Sheriff Lopez shared. “Tylenol and liquid Benadryl were on the nightstand.” Decaro was arrested for first-degree murder, according to Osceola County Jail records No details or records were immediately released by the agency. Kissimmee maintenance worker arrested, accused of raping 70-year-old woman in her apartment An employee at the Simpson Ridge Apartment complex in Kissimmee was arrested and placed into the Osceola County Jail on Thursday after being accused of raping a 70-year-old woman in her own apartment, the sheriff’s office said. Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez explained in a video released that 42-year-old Freddy Rodrigo LaFuente is facing charges of sexual battery and molestation of the elderly. “This individual works for an apartment complex where our victim lives,” Lopez said. “He goes into the apartment to do some work, small talk, befriends her, at one point he decides to tell her that he loves her, and he’s been in love with her.” According to the sheriff, LaFuente was a maintenance man at the apartment complex and had known the victim for about a year before allegedly sexually attacking the woman. Lopez said that the suspect threw the woman onto a bed, forcing her clothes off and raping her. After LaFuente left, the sheriff said the woman locked herself in her bathroom fearing that LaFuente would return. The woman was found unconscious by her granddaughter who had reached out to maintenance workers to help her unresponsive grandmother. One of the maintenance workers that helped the granddaughter was LaFuente, according to records.

NEWS New FWC diamondback terrapin conservation measures in effect
At its December 2021 meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved regulation changes that will help further diamondback terrapin conservation by preventing them from being collected from the wild. As of March 1, 2022, all collection and possession of diamondback terrapins is prohibited with the exception of scientific research with a valid permit. People who currently possess diamondback terrapins as personal pets may legally keep these animals but must obtain a no-cost Personal Possession permit by May 31, 2022. Individuals or institutions who keep diamondback terrapins for public display, education, outreach or other similar conservation-based programs must obtain a nocost Exhibition and Education permit. Kohl’s to undergo reset, says its no longer just a department store The retail market continues to evolve and force “department stores” to make changes or face possible closure. Traditional chains like Sears, and JCPenney have already been forced into bankruptcy, while motivating brands likes Kohl’s to look for new ways to connect with its customers. Kohl’s has announced that it will introduce some changes that it hopes will reinvigorate sales, promote its omnichannel approach, and improve its position in today’s retail market. These changes include: Adding Sephora mini-shops to 75% of its stores, opening 100 new Kohl’s stores in the next four years, enhancing Kohl’s Card rewards benefit to 7.5% everyday, launching of self-serve buy online & pick up in store to all stores, and committing to net zero emissions by 2050.

NEWS Osceola County looks to increase traffic safety to eliminate traffic fatalities, serious injuries Osceola County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to adopt a strategy designed to eliminate traffic fatalities on county roads by increasing safety, health, and equitable mobility for all on County roads by 2040. The Vision Zero Action Plan is part of a multi-national road traffic safety initiative that aims to achieve a highway system with no fatalities or serious injuries involving road traffic. It started in Sweden and uses an approach focused on spending on infrastructure as a benefit of decreasing risk. “The fundamental idea of this program is simple — saving lives means reducing speeds and decreasing the chance for collisions,” said Osceola Commission Chairman Brandon Arrington. “I’m excited for the next steps as we take this opportunity to analyze and improve our heavily traveled corridors that are dominated by the automobile. This is a way to look at creating practical infrastructure for walking, bicycling and transit use in the context of the Vision Zero philosophy that has proved to be effective in making transportation systems safer.” Chairman Arrington noted that across the United States, traffic deaths and injuries disproportionately impact pedestrian, cyclists, people of color, low-income households, older adults and youth, people with disabilities and households with limited vehicle access. The Central Florida region consistently ranks in the top five in terms of dangerous places to walk and bike according to Smart Grown America’s “Dangerous by Design” reports. Osceola County wants to decrease the frequency of bicycle crashes as part of the program. From 2018-2021, there were a total of 517 pedestrian and 358 bicycle crashes, an average of more than one every two days. Operation Best Foot Forward, which is administrated by Bike Walk Central Florida, partners with organizations in Central Florida, including Osceola County, to improve Central Florida streets for all through law enforcement operations, ongoing evaluations, and the implementation of engineering solutions. Their goal is to educate Central Florida motorists about their role in protecting road users, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

NEWS Osceola County Elections Office Temporarily Suspends Mailing of Voter Information Cards 2020 Census Data is used by the State of Florida and Osceola County to redraw legislative districts based on shifts in population. In December 2021, the district boundaries for the Osceola County Board of County Commissioners and School Board were adjusted to make the five districts equal in population, or nearly equal as possible. The Florida Legislature is now in the process of redrawing congressional and state legislative districts to reflect population growth in the state. While this process is ongoing, Osceola County Supervisor of Elections Mary Jane Arrington has decided to temporarily suspend the mailing of voter information cards. As of March 1, 2022, all new voter registration applications and voter registration updates will be processed; however, instead of getting a voter information card, the voter will receive a letter acknowledging their placement on the voter registration rolls for Osceola County.

SPORTS Osceola Kowboys add three to list of State Champions in wrestling
Jim Bird’s Osceola High wrestling team always seems to peak at the right time and it did so again this weekend at the FHSAA State Championships as three Kowboys claimed titles in Class 3A meet – marking it the 16 th straight year Osceola has had at least one individual state champion.
“Absolutely ecstatic at both the effort and performance,” Bird said shortly after Gunner Holland made it three for three for the Kowboys by winning the 160-lb. crown. “We brought seven wrestlers to the championship, put five on the podium and won three titles. This was just an outstanding meet all the way around for our guys.” In addition to Holland, a sophomore who won his second consecutive championship, Osceola saw junior Cooper Haase win his third straight state title topping the 138-lb. class; while sophomore Anderson Heap won his first at 126-lbs., a year after finishing second at 113. With sixth place finishes Melvin Ewen (145) and George Duncan (170) – along with points scored by Jomar Sanchez (220) and Elijah VanSickle (285), Osceola tallied 106.5 points for the meet and finished in fourth place in Class 3A. It was also the 15 th time in the last 16 years the Kowboys have posted a top five team finish in the state tournament. The three titles matched Palmetto Ridge for the most individual titles by a single Class 3A school. As the first Kowboy to wrestle in the finals, it was Heap that officially extended the streak – defeating Northport’s Sean-Michael Gonzalez by second period pin. It was a rematch of last week’s Region 2 Final, also won by Heap, 10-4. “When you wrestle someone you have already beaten during the year, it does give you a little confidence,” Heap, who went to 50-5 with the win. “But at the same time, I remember the tremendous disappointment I felt last year when I lost in the finals. I just did not want to experience that feeling again.”

Osceola County baseball: Osceola looks for deep season run, other schools to build on last year Baseball takes center stage as spring sports kicks into high gear this week for county schools and two of last year’s top teams look to build off of last year’s success. Osceola, who fell one game short of making the Class 7A Final Four last year with a 2-1 road loss to Durant in the regional championship, lost significant talent and leadership off of that 20-8 team; including SS Jose Perez (.348, 18 RBI), 3B Josean Sanchez (.325, 21 RBI) and ace pitcher Manuel Lopez (5-1, 1.28 ERA). But rivals will not feel too sorry for the Kowboys, as Coach Scott Birchler returns a ton of talent and picks up two valuable transfers for the 2022 season. “On paper, we are probably a little better team at the beginning of this season as compared to last year,” the veteran coach says. “But as with all sports, chemistry, injuries, and other factors will always play into things. We are a talented team, the question is will we play as one?” The two transfers that most likely will fit into Osceola’s plans this season are senior Chris Palmi (3B, C, P) and Nick Palmi (So., SS/P). The Palmi brothers played at St. Cloud last year, but transferred to Osceola, where their mother Carrie is the Kowboys’ head volleyball coach. Both played significant roles in the field and at the plate for the Bulldogs last year. Chris was the team’s leading hitter (.308) and was also 4-2 on the mound with a 3.00 ERA; while freshman Nick was 4-0 with a 0.67 ERA and was the team’s starting shortstop when not pitching. As pitchers, both averaged more than a strikeout an inning, combining for 70 strikeouts in 53.2 innings of work.

JD’s Weekly Musings, Talking Major League Baseball, Orlando Magic, Yardwork, NHL, and Pro Golf ESPN’s Jeff Passan made an absolute brilliant observation on the state of baseball the other day. He said if you replaced the top 1200 baseball players in Major League Baseball with the next 1200 best players, there would be a significant decline in the product’s quality. He then said you could replace the 30 MLB owners with just about any 30 random successful business people and you would not notice any change at all… It took about three weeks but I am starting to be convinced that the Orlando Magic’s seemingly tenth rebuild in the last 15 years is starting to work. Orlando hit on both their first round draft picks last year in rookies Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner, as two are combining for 28 points per game. When healthy Markelle Fultz is a terrific player and second year player Cole Anthony is leading the team in both scoring and assists. Even Mo Bamba, who many were considering a bust 18 months ago, is giving the Magic 10 points and eight rebounds a game. Orlando has hit home runs on their last three first round draft picks and if you toss Terrence Ross out of the equation (he’s 31 and will most likely be playing elsewhere next year), the average age of Orlando’s top eight players is 23. With another year of experience under their belts, another high draft pick this summer (Orlando currently has the 2nd worst record in the league) and hopefully if defensive whiz Jonathan Isaac can get and stay healthy, I believe Orlando is back in the playoffs as early as next year… After doing some yard work yesterday I have come to one conclusion. If anyone throws me out of an airplane and tells me you can take one thing with you but it can’t be a parachute, I am going to ask for a 100-ft. extension cord or a garden hose. Based on my experiences, I am pretty sure one of those things would get tangled up on something on the way down… In last 30 years, the Tampa Bay Lightning (2020-21) has joined the Pittsburgh Penguins (2016-17 and 1991-92) and Detroit Red Wings (1997-98) as the only teams to win back-to-back Stanley Cups.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Osceola Arts’ Presentation of “The Bridges of Madison County” to Open this Weekend Osceola Arts is excited to kick off Spring with a beautiful musical making its first appearance at Osceola Arts. Beginning Friday, March 11th, and running through Sunday, March 27th The Bridges of Madison County will be live on the Main Stage. This musical is based on the 1992 best-selling novel of the same name by Robert James Waller. With a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, The Bridges of Madison County centers around a forbidden love affair between an Iowa housewife and a handsome photographer who is in town on assignment. A live band will accompany a talented cast as they tell a story of passion, romance, duty, and devotion. The production, directed by Shana Burns, is not suitable for children under the age of 13. Tickets start at only $28, with Senior, students, and group rates available. Showtimes for The Bridges of Madison County are at 7:30 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 pm on Sundays, and an additional 2 pm matinee performance on Saturday, March 26th. An American Sign Language-interpreted performance will be featured during the March 26th matinee. Safety protocols are in place for all performances. Osceola Arts is pleased to also offer two new visual arts exhibits. DIVINITY: Works by Patricia Cavazos is an abstract interpretation of the Aztec world’s creation and the gods behind it. IN THE LOOP - THEME PARK NEWS Disney Assists FWC with Successful Rehabilitation and Release of Manatee Animal care experts from Walt Disney World Resort recently assisted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission with the successful release of a 680-pound manatee named Plantaina at Blue Spring State Park, about 50 miles northeast of Walt Disney World Resort. Plantaina is a young female manatee who was rescued as a baby near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when she was found abandoned at less than a week old. She was just 28 pounds at the time, making her the smallest manatee ever rescued. After a successful initial rehab, Plantaina was released back into the wild (Feb. 2021). However, she was soon discovered to be losing weight which required another rescue and rehabilitation before coming to The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT, where 24 other manatees have been rehabilitated over the years. “Manatees are an iconic species in Florida, and their conservation impacts all of us” said veterinarian Scott Terrell, DVM, and director of animal & science operations at Walt Disney World Resort. “Caring for these amazing creatures benefits all of the animals that live in their coastal habitats and the human communities around them.” Through collaboration with other rehabilitation facilities over the years – as part of the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) – Disney animal care experts provide ill and injured manatees with the stable, controlled environment they need to make a recovery and prepare for release. The manatees receive exceptional veterinary care including preventive health exams, a calorie-rich diet and around-the-clock monitoring to help them return to the wild when they are fit. Once released, some manatees like Plaintaina are assigned a satellite tracker that enables experts to continue to monitor the animal’s health, migration and socialization with other manatees. These satellite trackers are designed to break away if they become entangled in order to prioritize the health of the manatee. These manatee releases, help make a difference in the conservation of this amazing species.

In Florida, we’re in the “cooler’ months of the year, so it’s the perfect time to head outside and have some fun grilling. In this Positively Delicious recipe, we’ll help you create the perfect Grilled Florida Chicken Sandwich! It’s simple, it’s quick, and you’ll love it! INGREDIENTS • 2 Florida chicken breasts, grilled • 1 Florida tomato, sliced thin • 2 cups Florida arugula • 3 garlic cloves • 1 lemon, zested and juiced • ½ cup olive oil • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • Sandwich bread (your favorite) • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste PREPARATION In a blender or food processor combine arugula, garlic cloves, lemon zest, and juice, then pulse until combined. Turn on low and slowly drizzle in olive oil until loose paste forms. Pour into a small bowl and set aside. Heat grill to high. Season chicken with salt and pepper and grill for 4 minutes on both sides. Brush arugula pesto onto the chicken and continue to cook until internal temperature reaches 165. Remove and set aside to rest. Spread butter on inside of sandwich buns and place directly over heat for 1-2 minutes or until warm and toasted. Remove from grill and assemble the sandwich. The 16th annual event, scheduled for Saturday, March 12, will be held at Kissimmee Lakefront Park. Sponsored by the Kissimmee Utility Authority, the ‘fun run’ is held annually to raise money for MOW initiatives. One of OCOA’s largest fundraisers, the mission is to raise money to help feed those in the Osceola community who are unable to prepare meals and feed themselves. Though demands have evolved based on the socioeconomic needs of the Osceola community, the core mission is consistent; provide meals and services for community members in need, no matter what.

HEALTH Micropremie is Tiniest Baby to Ever Graduate from NICU Jomary and Federico were excited when they became pregnant with their first child. That excitement quickly turned to fear when during a routine appointment, Jomary was admitted to Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies. She was in labor at 20 weeks and 5 days gestation. Jomary was diagnosed with an incompetent cervix which caused her to dilate. The team assessed her options and considered performing a cerclage, where stitches are used to close the cervix to stop her from delivering prematurely. But due to complications, she was at risk of losing the baby if they performed the procedure. Jomary was put on bed rest at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer to give her baby more time to develop. If she could make it to 22 weeks, her team of doctors felt confident they could help her baby survive At 22 weeks and 4 days, Jomary went into labor again. She delivered a baby girl named Diana at 9:09am on May 10, 2020 – Mother’s Day. She was born weighing 350 grams (12 ounces) and was 24 centimeters (9 inches) long. Diana was considered a micropreemie, a term used for babies born before 26 weeks and weighing less than 800 grams. After examining her size and development, her medical team believed Diana may have been younger than 22 weeks, as gestational age is just an estimate. Babies born at 22 weeks are often double her size. The odds were against Diana. Most babies born this early and small have a nearimpossible chance of survival. “[Dr. Queliz] told us to give her three days. If she survived, then we were going to give her two weeks,” said Jomary. “The time kept passing. The three days turned into two weeks. Then into a month and two months.” To stay positive throughout their daughter’s journey in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Jomary and Federico took things one day at a time. They didn’t focus on her future, but rather her short terms goals and meeting milestones. The family recalls that three short term goals would equal one bigger goal. “They gave us time frames and we focused on that,” said Jomary. “That’s what helped us.”

HEALTH As Soccer Season Kicks Off, Orlando Health Doctors Do, Too As Orlando City kicks off its 2022 soccer season, the goal of keeping the players healthy has been underway for weeks. Just as players prepare for a season that extends into the fall, so do the team doctors who care for them. The physicians at Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute, the team’s official medical provider, completed preseason medical exams in January and have logged baseline records for each player. Before each new season, a learning curve starts on both sides. The team, which includes international players who don’t speak the language or understand the U.S. healthcare system, is curious about their doctors. And physicians want to learn about their young patients. “Over time, you get to know their personality,” says Dr. Craig Mintzer, a boardcertified orthopedic surgeon with Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute and the lead physician for Orlando City. Some players are sensitive to pain, while others “tear their ACL [knee ligament] and they say, ‘It’s fine. I’m good to go.’ ” The orthopedic institute also provides medical care for several other highperformance teams and groups in Central Florida, including the University of Central Florida, the Orlando Pride, Special Olympics and the Orlando Ballet. This week, the doctors also will be caring for professional golfers at the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard at Bay Hill. The care team As the presenting partner and official medical team, Orlando Health has worked with Orlando City since 2011. The Lions start their season on February 27 against Montreal at Exploria Stadium. Come game time, Dr. Mintzer and others with the institute are on the sideline. The orthopedic institute also treats Orlando City’s coaching staff and training staff. “Most of the time they’re dealing with their primary care doctors, but if someone is a retired player, they may have some arthritis issues that we can help with,” Dr. Mintzer says.

REAL ESTATE Goodwin Realty: How Global Uncertainty Is Impacting Mortgage Rates If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home, you’ll want to keep a pulse on what’s happening with mortgage rates. Rates have been climbing in recent months, especially since January of this year. And just a few weeks ago, the 30year fixed mortgage rate from Freddie Mac approached 4% for the first time since May of 2019. But that climb has dropped slightly over the past few weeks. The recent decline in mortgage rates is primarily due to growing uncertainty around geopolitical tensions surrounding Russia and Ukraine. But experts say it’s to be expected. Here’s a look at how industry leaders are explaining the impact global uncertainty has on mortgage rates: Odeta Kushi, Deputy Chief Economist at First American, says: “While mortgage rates trended upward in 2022, one unintended side effect of global uncertainty is that it often results in downward pressure on mortgage rates.” In another interview, Kushi adds: “Geopolitical events play an important role in impacting the long end of the yield curve and mortgage rates. For example, in the weeks following the ‘Brexit’ vote in 2016, the U.S. Treasury bond yield declined and led to a corresponding decline in mortgage rates.” Kushi’s insights are a reminder that, historically, economic uncertainty can impact the 10-year treasury yield – which has a long-standing relationship with mortgage rates and is often considered a leading indicator of where rates are headed. Will Mortgage Rates Stay Down? While no one has a crystal ball to predict exactly what will happen with rates in the future, experts agree this slight decline is temporary. Sam Khater, Chief Economist at Freddie Mac, echoes Kushi’s sentiment, but adds that the decline in rates won’t last.
