St. Cloud Little League hits home run, to open season Saturday with record number of players It’s time to play ball! Opening Day for St. Cloud Little League is Saturday, February 26, and this spring season will be one for the record books with over 950 kiddos registered to play on 79 teams! That’s right… almost 1000 players will take the field this season in St. Cloud – an increase of over 30%! St. Cloud Little League has been around since 1977, providing a positive environment for the development of sportsmanship, character, and athletic skill among the St. Cloud community’s youth, all while providing a way for kids to develop a deep appreciation and love for the game of baseball and softball.

On Saturday, February 26 at 8 am the 2022 St. Cloud League season will officially begin, and it’s all open to the public – as community leaders, volunteers, coaches, and players come together to enjoy the annual celebration filled with entertainment, delicious food, and of course, 80 games that will be played throughout the day!

Positively Osceola would like to thank the City of St. Cloud Parks and Recreation Department for providing a great facility for the youth in our community to experience the sport of baseball. We’d also like to join the St. Cloud Little League in saying thank you to ALL the volunteers, players, coaches, and everyone that will make this Little League season the best ever! Play ball!

Everyone’s Favorite Silver Spurs Riding Club Rodeo… the Exceptional Rodeo!

Shouts of joy filled the Silver Spurs Arena on the final day of this year’s 148th Silver Spurs Rodeo, and it happened during the Silver Spurs Riding Club’s favorite rodeo… the Exceptional Rodeo.

This year’s rodeo saw record crowds on Friday and Saturday night, and again during its Sunday afternoon “matinee’ rodeo, but on Sunday morning, everyone who is part of the Silver Spurs Riding Club will tell you the same thing, the Exceptional Rodeo is everyone’s favorite rodeo event. Silver Spurs Riding Club volunteers, along with Rodeo Queens from all over the United States and Canada lead the very special kiddos through the five stations of a traditional rodeo — steer wrestling, barrel racing, roping, bull riding, and bronc riding, utilizing life-sized, interactive animal props, and some wonderfully gentle horses. Participants also had the opportunity to take photos with the Queens of the Miss Silver Rodeo Court.

“The exceptional rodeo is held every year… kids, adults, anyone with disabilities can come and get to sit on a bucking bull, get to ride horses around, there are ropes set up for them to ride roping dummies, there are goats, sheep, a heifer to pet and to touch, and the Sheriff’s Office even brings in an airboat,” said Miss Rodeo Florida, Mikayla Baker.

MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE KVLS raises over $39,000 for family of 16-yearold 4-H girl tragically killed before fair If you attended any of the livestock shows at this year’s Osceola County Fair, you may have seen some of the 4-H youth wearing purple ribbons or armbands. Those armbands were worn to honor and remember their fellow 4-H friend Victoria “Tori” King, a 16-year-old St. Cloud girl who was critically hurt in a car accident on her way home after tending to her animals only days before the fair. She was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center, and although she fought hard, she eventually passed away from her injuries.

As another show of support for the King family, a silent auction was set up by a number of 4-H friends and family in the KVLS conference room throughout the fair as a fundraiser for King’s family. By the end of the Fair, the silent auction had already raised over $39,000, surely a testimony to the mark that Tori King had made on her 4-H friends and the entire KVLS family.

“It was such a tragic loss for everyone here at KVLS and for all involved with 4-H, but to see how her friends and KVLS surrounded her family and came together to help, was truly inspirational,” said Kasey Puckett, staff member at KVLS. Anyone interested in contributing to the King family may still do so by calling the Osceola County Fair/KVLS at 321-697-3050.

MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE St. Cloud High School’s Unified Special Olympics Basketball Team Heads to State Championship

On Friday night an underdog Osceola high school basketball team will play Lake Worth in a Class 7A, Region 3 championship game.

At stake will be a chance for the Kowboys to advance to their fourth Final Four in the last seven years.

And while that feat is impressive, it is important to point only that they are not the only basketball team from Osceola County with state championship aspirations this year.

Starting Thursday, the St. Cloud High School Unified Special Olympics Basketball Team will be headed to Lakeland for the 2022 FHSAA Unified Special Olympics State Championship, where they will play Plant City on Friday at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs qualified for the game by finishing the regular season with a perfect 6-0 record — beating teams from around the state of Florida. Each Unified Team consists of Special Olympic Athletes who wear even numbers and volunteers from the main student body called partners, who wear odd numbers. Three Special Olympic athletes are on the court at all times with the purpose of the partner players are to help facilitate the game and help the Special Olympic Athletes shine.

NEWS Lloyd Phillips Receives Lt. Lloyd Burton, Jr. Service Award from Osceola County During Monday’s Osceola County Board of Commissioners meeting, Lloyd Phillips, who has spent countless hours making Osceola County a better place, was recognized as the Lt. Lloyd Burton, Jr. Service Award winner

by Osceola County Commissioners.

Osceola County Commissioner Viviana Janer made the presentation.

Much of Phillips’ efforts are through his work with the Caribbean and Florida Association, an Osceola County non-profit formed in 1990 to assist new arrivals to Central Florida, particularly those with Caribbean backgrounds.

CAFA focuses on helping those in need, while promoting cultural diversity and community involvement. Its members are involved in all aspects of the community – including annual events such as scholarships awards for high school students, a Thanksgiving turkey giveaway, Christmas baskets for residents of assisted living facilities and the Caribbean Fusion Festival, held annually at the Kissimmee Lakefront every April.

“Mr. Phillips’ leadership has been at the forefront of making Osceola County a better place for everyone since moving here in 1996,” said Osceola County Commission Vice Chairwoman Viviana Janer. “His contributions have helped residents — young and old — find happiness, well-being and opportunities to improve their lives.”

Phillips followed an older brother who came here in 1988. As a teenager, his parents moved the family to New York from Guyana. He credited his parents for his passion for public service. His father served in the “British Regiment” there and that service and his mother’s community work was passed on to him and his siblings.

“I’ve always believed in giving back to the community,” said Phillips. “As a family, we pride ourselves on helping folks to enjoy a better way of life.”

Phillips said he was particularly proud of CAFA’s efforts to help victims of disasters in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Haiti.

NEWS Orlando Health Welcomes 2/22/22 Babies on Twos-day Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies welcomed babies with a very special birthday this Twos-day, 2/22/22, a rare palindrome that reads the same forwards and backward.

Among the babies delivered on Tuesday, Miranda Gonzalez and Jeremiah Colon welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Evelyn. Orlando Health Winnie Palmer is one of the largest birthing centers in the country and delivers an average of 40 babies per day.

NEWS I-4 Express lanes to open Saturday morning, FDOT says After almost seven years of major construction on the I-4 corridor’s busiest segment of the I-4 Ultimate Project, the 21-mile stretch of eastbound and westbound express toll lanes from Kirkman Road to State Road 434 will be open to the public Saturday morning, according to FDOT.

I-4 Express will open with the introductory cost of 50 cents per tolling segment, which ends up being $3.50 if you’re traveling east from Universal Studios and $3 enter in Longwood.FDOT said the tolls will change depending on the volume of traffic using the express lanes, which is designed to manage congestion. The busier the express lanes are the more they will cost you.

Governor Ron DeSantis welcomes thousands of fans to the 148th Silver Spurs Rodeo

Friday night was filled with high energy at Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee with a capacity crowd at the Osceola County Fair (KVLS), and packed stands in the Silver Spurs Arena for the 148th Silver Spurs Rodeo, but the energy rose to an even higher level when Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis stepped out onto the dirt in the Silver Spurs Arena with State Representative Fred Hawkins Jr to wish the Silver Spurs Rodeo fans well and to welcome them to the rodeo!

“It is an honor to welcome all of you to the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi River, in one of Florida’s most dynamic counties, in what is the free-est state in these United States,” the governor announced to the extremely supportive crowds. We are going to absolutely keep these traditions alive, and preserve what makes America great, the governor added before taking a seat and enjoying some of the best in professional rodeo in the world.”

On Saturday morning the streets in Downtown St. Cloud were lined with rodeo fans for the Silver Spurs Rodeo Parade which featured the Miss Silver Spurs Court, along with rodeo queens from all around the country and Canada. Also in the parade were CocaCola Cowboy & Lifetime Achievement Award honorees Tom and Martha Booth, along with the Silver Spurs Riding Club Big Boss, the Classy Cowgirls on horseback, elected officials, businesses, and organizations from around Osceola County. Hometown cowboy Juan Alcazar Jr. walked with the title of All-around cowboy after the Silver Spurs Rodeo competition finished on Sunday. The event’s total payoff was $100,149!

NEWS Osceola Sheriff’s Office requesting public’s help in locating fatal shooting suspect Osceola County deputies are investigating a fatal shooting of an 18-year-old that took place early Thursday morning in Kissimmee.

Shortly after midnight on Thursday, Osceola deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the area of Indian Pointe Circle in Kissimmee.

After arriving at the scene, deputies found the body of 18-year-old Jommil Jave BaezQuinones, who had been fatally shot. This is an active investigation, and the Sheriff’s Office is requesting that anyone with information pertaining to the incident is asked to please contact the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office at (407) 348-2222.

NEWS Florida’s Tourism Continues to Rebound, Surpass Pre-Pandemic Levels Florida has welcomed 30.9 million visitors between October and December 2021, marking the second consecutive quarter that overall visitation has surpassed 2019, pre-pandemic levels according to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Overall in 2021, Florida had nearly 118 million domestic visitors, the highest level in state history, as residents of other states flocked to Florida.

“In Florida, we put freedom first, and as a result people are choosing to vacation in our state from across the country and the world to escape lockdowns, including the politicians who advocated for those reckless policies and who are often spotted vacationing here,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “While tourism in other states is only just beginning to recover, Florida is at the front of the pack — now we are surpassing pre-pandemic levels and setting new visitation records. I’m thankful that VISIT FLORIDA continued to market our state throughout the past two years, and I am confident that 2022 will be another great year for Florida’s tourism industry.”

“We are thrilled to cap off an incredible year with more record-breaking success for Florida’s tourism industry,” said Dana Young, VISIT FLORIDA President and CEO. “Overall visitation not only exceeded 2019’s for the second quarter in a row, but domestically reached the highest point in our state’s history. We also saw a significant rebound in international travel, including record visitation from Colombia that has made it now Florida’s No. 1 international origin market. Preliminary estimates from VISIT FLORIDA show that 29 million domestic visitors traveled to Florida in the fourth quarter of 2021, reflecting a 57 percent increase from the same period in 2020, and a 7 percent increase from 2019.

Approximately 1.5 million overseas visitors came to Florida in Q4 of 2021, an increase of 198 percent from 2020, and 43 percent from Q3 2021.

NEWS Greater Aviation Authority Finalizes Terms with New CEO, Kevin Thibault

Kevin Thibault has been confirmed as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA). The GOAA Board unanimously voted to approve a fiveyear contract during a recent board meeting.

He was named the preferred candidate at last month’s meeting pending negotiations on terms of employment.

“I feel confident that we have chosen the best of the very best to lead us toward the 22nd century,” said Carson Good, Chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority. “Kevin Thibault will help lead the airport to new heights, with a focus on operational efficiency, flights to more destinations, and the most enjoyable airport experience possible.”

As the Secretary of Transportation for the State of Florida, Mr. Thibault was charged with overseeing a $10 billion annual budget and a vast statewide network of airports, highways, rail systems, and seaports. His prior experience includes two other positions within FDOT, along with extensive experience at several engineering firms since 1985.

Gas prices reach their highest level in 2022, AAA says Florida gas prices have reached their highest level in 2022 with the current average price of gas at $3.49 per gallon, AAA said on Monday. The national average is a few cents higher at $3.51 while Osceola is $3.48 per gallon of regular unleaded.

According to AAA, that’s 15 cents more than last year’s high and the highest daily average price since the summer of 2014.

NEWS Orlando International Airport’s New South Terminal C to Open in 2022 The largest expansion project undertaken in Orlando International Airport (MCO) history is nearly 90 percent complete and set to open later this year. The new terminal will encompass 300 acres and add 15 gates capable of accommodating up to 20 aircraft, including narrow body, jumbo and super-jumbo jets. The three-level South Terminal C will accommodate travel for an additional 1012 million annual passengers.

MCO consistently ranks among the nation’s best airports for customer service. The new South Terminal C is designed to reinforce this reputation. Encompassing over 2.5 million square feet, the new terminal will debut the next generation of The Orlando Experience®: a seamless, low-touch environment with an exciting combination of concession offerings, immersive media displays and an unparalleled sense of arrival. The space includes an Early Bag Storage robotic system and a state-of-the-art Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID) tote system that tracks luggage in real-time and is faster than conventional baggage conveyor systems. Incoming passengers will enjoy top-floor arrivals with streamlined luggage collection on the same level.

In addition to the unique architecture and aesthetics, travelers will enjoy an easier, more efficient screening process with 100% automated lanes for international departures and arrivals. When it comes to the passenger experience, the South Terminal includes interactive video displays in the ticket halls, concession hub and gate areas that will provide high definition visual experiences. The project is being designed and built to be the first LEED®v4 airport campus and will provide passengers with access to several indoor spaces that promote sustainability.

Similac baby formula recall: Here’s what you need to know The makers of Similac®, Alimentum®, and EleCare® have issued a voluntary recall for some of its baby formula products that were produced in the Abbott Nutrition’s facility in Sturgis, Michigan. The recall affects select powder baby formula from those brands following consumer complaints of illness in babies.

The FDA is advising consumers not to use Similac, Alimentum, or EleCare powdered infant formulas if: • The first two digits of the code are 22 through 37; and • The code on the container contains K8, SH, or Z2; and • The expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.

If your child is experiencing any Cronobacter infection symptoms or Salmonella symptoms, you should seek medical care for your child immediately.

Individuals should not use recalled infant formula and contact their health care provider for guidance on alternative infant formula use. If you are a Florida Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program participant, do not use the recalled infant formula and do not discard or throw it out.

Impacted Florida WIC Program participants should contact their local WIC office for information on how to return recalled infant formula for alternative replacements. The Florida Department of Health is also reaching out to Florida WIC Program participants.

SPORTS Disparity in Foul Calls Sends Osceola to Regional Finals It’s not too often that a big disparity of foul calls against your team actually helps you win the game, but that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night when the Osceola Kowboys (20-5) came away with a 49-45 win over Wellington to advance to the Class 7A, Region 3 Finals.

Sean Combs hit an arching layup with 31 seconds to go to give Osceola a 47-45 lead in the game. After the Kowboys forced a turnover at the other end, the Wolves found themselves down by two points with 16.8 seconds remaining but only had two team fouls.

Rather than trying to trap and come up with a steal, Wilmington started fouling intentionally to put Osceola on the foul line. But to do so, they had to commit five team fouls, which took all but 5.4 seconds off the clock. Combs made both ends of the oneand-one to secure the win.

“It’s absolutely crazy how this game plays out sometimes,” Osceola Coach Steve Mason said. “I wasn’t too happy about the huge disparity in fouls called on us compared to the number of fouls called on them but in the end, it helped us win the game. I was a bit surprised they didn’t try to trap and get a turnover because by having to foul us five times, it took more than 10 seconds of the game clock. It definitely worked to our advantage and shortened the game.”

It was an incredibly hard-fought game, where no team led by more than four points.

The contest featured 13 lead changes and eight ties and every shot and possession was hotly contested on both ends of the floor.

Osceola would get five points, three rebounds, and a block from Combs to take a 12-10 lead after one period. They would extend the lead to 20-18 at the half, thanks to some spotty free-throw shooting by Wellington, who missed seven free throws in the half – including the front ends of three one-plus-ones.

Franchises are now worth billions. And now it appears baseball is going to come to a sudden, screeching halt because billionaire owners and multi-millionaire players can’t figure out a way to split that enormous revenue pie? The last labor stoppage in 1994 canceled about half the season and the World Series and caused a ton of damage to the game. Now, these guys seem hell-bent on history repeating itself. As someone who spent years in sports public relations, here’s some free advice – figure out how to solve this so the season starts on time because frankly, the American public doesn’t view your game as must-see TV anymore…

Say What? Great sports quote from days gone by: “My goal is to rush for 1000 or 1500 yards this year…whichever comes first.” Former Saints running back George Rogers…

The Grand Poobahs of the College Football Playoffs have decided to leave the system of selecting four playoff teams in place through the expiration of the 2026 contract.

Although I was one of the people screaming for UCF to be included in the playoffs in 2017 (because I sincerely believed they were one of the four best teams in the country that year not because I wanted to see an eight-team playoff), I am 100% okay with leaving this tournament at four teams. My reasoning is simple. Since the system was adopted for the 2014 season, we have had 16 semifinal games – 12 of those games were total blowouts of 15 points or more. In short, we can’t seem to find four teams to give us two good semifinal games so how is asking for eight, 12 or 16 teams making the game any more interesting or compelling? Since Cincinnati was able to prove that a non-power five team can get into the tournament, I do not see the need of creating two more rounds of lopsided games. I mean do we really need to see Alabama or Georgia kill the 16th seed by 50 points? As a side note, does anyone besides me find it interesting that officials from UCF, BYU, Houston and Cincinnati –who spent years screaming, pleading and begging for playoff expansion – have remained totally silent about the decision to keep the current system at four teams?

INGREDIENTS • 3 large Florida bell peppers (your favorite color), halved lengthwise, seeds removed • 1 pound lean ground Florida beef • 2 cups Florida tomatoes, diced • 1 cup Florida zucchini, diced small • 1 cup Florida squash, diced small • 1 cup onion, chopped • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced • 1 lime, juiced • 1 teaspoon oregano • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder • 1 tablespoon chili powder • 2 cups Colby jack cheese, shredded (or your favorite) • Olive oil, for cooking • Various toppings, such as tortilla chips, sour cream, and cilantro • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste PREPARATION Preheat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Add olive oil to preheated sauté pan. Add chopped onion to the pan and cook until translucent. Add garlic and ground beef to the cooking onions. Brown ground beef and drain any excess fat. Add the lime juice, dry spices, tomatoes, zucchini, and squash; stir to combine.

So, what better way to celebrate than to enjiy some delectable strrawberry fritters. We think you’ll agree… they’re Positively Delicious!

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups Florida strawberries, diced • 1 cup Florida orange juice • 2 large eggs • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 cups all-purpose flour • ⅓ cup sugar • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon cinnamon v¼ teaspoon ground ginger • Pinch of cardamom • Pinch of white pepper • ½ cup sugar (for coating) • 1 tablespoon cinnamon (for coating) • 2 quarts (or more) oil, for frying PREPARATION In a medium bowl toss sugar and cinnamon together and set aside. To prepare the batter, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and white pepper in a large bowl. Add the diced strawberries to the flour mixture and toss to combine.

Sponsored by the Kissimmee Utility Authority, the ‘fun run’ is held annually to raise money for MOW initiatives. KUA’s FREE Movie in the Park Series to continue with “Encanto” Friday March 4

Kissimmee Utility Authority, in partnership with the City of Kissimmee, will host a free Movie in the Park event on Friday, March 4 at the Veterans Lawn of Kissimmee Lakefront Park. The movie event is part of KUA’s annual 6-month Movie in the Park series held on the first Friday of every month, beginning October through March.

Activities begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the movie at 7 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. The event will feature “Encanto” shown on a giant 50-foot screen. Attendees will enjoy KUA’s inflatable Kids Power Zone, a craft station, photo booth, free popcorn, and prize giveaways.

Through hands-on demonstrations, attendees will also learn how to lower their monthly electric bills.

COMMUNITY reThink Your Commute with City of Kissimmee Bike to Work Day On Friday, March 4th at 7 am, Kissimmeearea employers and their employees will have an opportunity to participate in a Bike to Work Day event along with reThink Your Commute and the City of Kissimmee.

The 3-mile long ride will take place primarily on Kissimmee’s scenic Lakefront Trail and is estimated to take about 30 minutes long, depending on the bike rider. The slowpaced bike ride will begin and end at Ruby Plaza in downtown Kissimmee with all traffic laws being followed. Individual riders will be able to leave the group ride at any point along the route to get to their actual worksite. A police escort is expected to be at the event. Participants are expected to bring their own bicycle or ride to the morning meetup location. Parking is available at Ruby Plaza for those who drive a motor vehicle to the morning meet-up location.

Riders must sign a waiver and wear a bicycle helmet to participate in the group ride.

Free bike helmets will be available at Ruby Plaza during check-in courtesy of Bike Walk Central Florida and FDOT District Five.

Orlando Health: Bob Saget’s Death Highlights Dangers of Head Injuries TV star Bob Saget’s recent death from head trauma has raised awareness of the dangers of brain injuries and may leave you wondering when you should go to the ER after hitting your head.

While the extent and circumstances of Saget’s head injury remain in question, it is clear that head trauma can be serious — even when it doesn’t seem like it.

Head injuries send millions of people to the ER every year, and an estimated 5.3 million people in the U.S. live with a disability caused by a traumatic brain injury. Death from traumatic brain injury, like Saget’s, is also common. About 61,000 traumatic brain injury-related deaths happen in the U.S. every year.

Two Types of Traumatic Brain Injury Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a sudden impact to the head that causes harm to the brain. Common causes of TBI include car accidents, falls, physical assaults and sports injuries.

There are two main types of traumatic brain injury: • Closed head injuries occur when an outside force impacts the head hard enough to injure the brain, but the skull is not broken or penetrated. A closed TBI may occur, for example, when the head strikes a dashboard in a car accident. This type of TBI can occur without a blow to the head. It can also come from unexpected rapid neck movements, like whiplash.

• Penetrating (open) head injuries occur when an object hits the head forcefully enough to break, fracture or penetrate the skull and damage the brain tissue.

Should I Go to the ER? Not every bump on the head warrants a trip to the ER, but what may appear to be a minor injury can be — or grow to be — something more serious.
