Scorching heat – how to take care of your Eyes? Summer season has set in and it is blazing hot. We need to take adequate care of our eyes during this season. During summer many people develop conjunctivitis (pink eye) which is highly contagious and can spread by means of touch. In summer there is more dust, pollen and other substances in the air which produce eye allergy. Also, due to the hot and dry climate, the tear film in our eyes gets evaporated faster causing a burning sensation and irritation in both eyes. During summer, we are exposed to a very heavy dose of ultraviolet rays which can harm the eyes in many ways. This can lead to formation of cataract, growth of a tissue called pterigium on the surface of the eye and retina problems. So what do we do? Beating eye problems in summer is important to enjoy the vacation and for this we need to *Avoid direct sunlight and stay inside especially during late mornings and afternoons because it is during this time when the strength of the sun is at its maximum and ultraviolet rays at its peak. *Whenever you are outside under the sun always wear sunglasses that offer proper UV protection. *Wear a sun hat or an umbrella when outdoors to prevent direct exposure of the eyes to sunlight *Avoid dusty environments and keep your surroundings clean to reduce the load of dust, pollen and other substances in the air. *While applying sunscreen lotion try to avoid contact with the eyes as it may cause irritation. *It is very important to keep both your skin and eyes hydrated. So drink adequate water (minimum of 2 litres) to keep yourself well hydrated. *Importantly avoid self medication if you have any problem. Consult an ophthalmologist immediately. Courtesy: Dr. M.
