Chovia copiosamente nessa noite.

That evening rained cats and dogs. Rui Costa scored the first goal at sixty minutes, with a long shot. Up until then, the match had been goalless and there was no shortage of criticism of the players, the coach and even the rain that persisted in falling from the sky. That was the first time I'd actually seen what's known as coaching from the sidelines. I've seen lots of it since then and I'm even friends with some of the people who do it. Having arrived here, at this atypical year that is 2020, we now have Sideline Coach 5.0, people who are behind a computer or on a mobile phone. Everything is bad, everything is wrong, everything is a target for unconstructive criticism. It's like reading the headlines and thinking you're the most informed person around. We know everything about COVID-19, the GDP, unemployment and employment, tourism, Cristina, Maria, Manuel, etc… Bloom celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. And that's something that lots of ‘sideline coaches’ must have though was impossible because “fashion has no present, never mind a future!”, as loudly proclaimed in some Facebook-type post. On Facebook, that virtual clinical psychology clinic and keeper of absolute accuracy. Doing things is a difficult task. And doing things well seems almost to be a Herculean task. What is it about some people that they tend to make life difficult for people trying to succeed? May the answer will come in another post… There's a past, a present and a future in Bloom. There's work, dedication, commitment and the desire to improve. Always. There's life, talent and a hard road ahead, yes. Things don't get easier when you're doing what you love, but it makes more sense to do them.

The first time I ever saw coaching from the sidelines was at the ‘old’ Luz stadium, in a match between Portugal and the Republic of Ireland on 15 November 1995, one of the qualifying matches for the Euro 96. The Portuguese squad ended up losing 1-0 in the quarterfinals with the Czech Republic.

Salva as tuas cores, Salva o Recife.

“In a single minute I discovered the work of biologist Emma Camp, and in a minute, “Horizonte” was born”. It was the destruction of more than a third of the Australian coral barrier, the shocking images and the desire to change, that inspired this collection. When a coral dies it becomes white and loses its shades and colors. This collection presents a fluidity of shapes and materials such as the lightness of the corals that move with the waves of the sea, the frills and layers represent the shapes that the corals create among themselves. The colors refer to their natural state and white color, the death of the corals. It’s also a collection that addresses diving clothing and accessories that refer to Emma's work to harvest and plant new corals. Save your colors, save the reef.

Morremos sozinhos. Vive a tua verdade a tua realidade. Respira! Pode ser a última vez. Vive!

The spring / summer 2021 collection was created from the memories that I keep from my grandmothers who have always been a great source of strength and inspiration in my life. The result was a fusion of each one’s style and the time they were born, 1930. Grandma Amélia gave me the blue shirt with flowers, the scarves around the neck and the suits with shoulder pads. Grandma Cacilda gave me the dresses with polka dots. Royal blue and white reflect the sky that shelters them and the infinite tranquility that surrounds them. Black, the predominant color of all collections, expresses the respect, fear and sadness that result from the loss of great love. This collection intends, in a way, to eternalize the love that we shared.

“She & I"- reflexo na distância e no afastamento.

“She & I"- a reflection on distance and distancing. The desire to be close, to be together, to be in a place where you can't be. Comfort, softness, and lightness. The depth of the ego can be complex. We give life to delicacy and femininity, a characteristic of the UNFLOWER universe, in contrast with the adaptability and functionality of the clothes. We want to be where we can't be - a constant reflection that calls for the appearance of functional clothes. Gathering on the individual items of a perfect duo (top-skirt) gives the illusion of a single item. Calm, neutral shades, in layers that are often transparent, with a vibrant contrast of blue and green near the skin. Oversized silhouettes portray the need for comfort and the different layers and volumes in the same pieces of clothing are like a game. Of symbols and tastes we carry with us.

— EN

The starting point for the SS21 collection is the film “Palm Trees in the Snow”, a story that recalls the colonial past and the legendary plantations in Africa. Spain, 1953. Two brothers leave behind their dull life in the snow of the mountain to embark on a journey to the depths of Equatorial Guinea to work on a cocoa plantation. In this warm, eternally green land, they discover the charms of social life, in contrast with the cold, monotonous life they lived in Spain in the 1950s. At the same time as memories of the cold are fading away, the hot, suffocating, and humid heat of the unknown and exotic Guinea calls for an inevitable adaptation.

12-13

Heavily influenced by the universe of classic clothing, the collection explores clothes and silhouettes that result from the continuous transformation forced by this new, exuberant, and tropical land. Gradually, the materials become lighter, the palette of colours goes from cold blue to the predominant white and the silhouettes become looser. Classic clothes no longer make sense and give way to more practical solutions, inspired by the clothing of the native slaves, who know exactly how to adapt to what nature so vibratingly and urgently imposes.

CONCURSO BLOOM /

2020 é o ano do 10º aniversário do Bloom.

/ 10 YEARS OF BLOOM AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE WANT TO KEEP GOING

BLOOM COMPETITION 2020 At the 47th Portugal Fashion, to be held from 15 to 17 October at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre, the two winners of the Bloom Competition powered by Sonae Fashion, a competition to find the best young fashion designers, will finally be announced. / POWERED BY SONAE FASHION

Ten years of Bloom and 78 new talents that have been on this privileged platform for publicising and projecting new names in Portuguese fashion. It's work done by creation in the making and that's renewed at each event. A decade launching young talents. Some fell by the wayside. Others made it because they prevailed. Now, they're the raw material for something we define as a perpetual creativity movement that's bold and willing to take a chance. Do more! Do better, despite all the hardships. 2020 marks Bloom’s 10th anniversary. And it's also the year for renewing and resuming new principles. For another 10, 20 years. 10 is a perfect number. It's completeness in the making. A cycle that had a beginning but doesn't want to end. In these uncertain times, of fear and forced stoppages, we're finally back, and with a Bloom that was left ‘in the making’ last March. We've challenged our Bloomers once again and the result is the presentation of the new Spring/Summer Collections for 2021. João Sousa, ARIEIV, Carolina Sobral and 0.9 Virus on 15 October. On 16 October, Maria Meira, Unflower and Rita Sá. On the last day, 17 October, all eyes will be on the announcement of the winners of the Competition Powered by Sonae Fashion, postponed due to the pandemic. This is the mission that is at the core of Bloom. Helping to prevail, resisting in order to create.

Authority, was forced to cancel the event. Six months later, the two winners, i.e., the two promising young talents in Portuguese fashion, will be announced at this event. The final panel of judges’ decision will be disclosed at 5 pm on 17 October, after the video broadcast of the fashion shows by the eight finalists. The names of the two winners will then be announced live. Sponsored by Sonae Fashion for the first time, the Bloom Competition is open to young fashion designers, with a view to their professional training, public promotion, and integration into the labour market. The eight finalists will have the opportunity to showcase their most recent creations at Portugal Fashion, as will be the case at this 47th event. The two winners will receive €4,000 each to develop collections for the coming seasons, spring/summer and fall/ winter. The winners of the Bloom Competition powered by Sonae Fashion will also attend a 9-month paid internship (worth around €6,000) at the Sonae Fashion portfolio brands (Salsa, Zippy, MO and Losan). They can then present a new clothing label launch project to the company's incubator, Fashion Lab. Sonae Fashion will also be awarding an honourable mention, with €1,000 going to the best coordinate. In addition, one of the Sonae Fashion brands may adapt and market that same winning coordinate. It is worth noting that, during the fashion show for the Bloom Competition powered by Sonae Fashion, the work of the eight finalists will be assessed by a panel of judges, presided over by businessman Manuel Serrão and also including designers Marques’Almeida (international designer/label), Pedro Pedro (women's fashion designer) and Hugo Costa (men's fashion designer), fashion stylist Fernando Bastos, the fashion coordinator at Portugal Fashion, Isabel Branco, and the Chief Product Officer at Salsa, representing Sonae Fashion, You Nguyen. It should also be noted that, under the scope of the competition, the competing designers are monitored and mentored by the Bloom coordination team. Besides, such support covers both the development of the collections and the organisation of the fashion shows. In addition, ANJE provides legal support and business mentoring for starting up a corporate/business enterprise and trademark registration.

/ HIPÉRBOLE

A consensus is yet to be reached. Being less, or more, or even different from the parameters imposed by society is yet to be accepted in full. The concept of being free (or “the idea of”) in the true sense of the expression seems to be unreachable. Make-up, the type, colour and size of clothing, body changes, religious and political beliefs and sexual orientation are a constant reason for social condemnation. Hipérbole is the name of the FW20 collection that goes beyond conventions. It comes as a criticism of a minority of society that lives with prejudice. Is it utopian to wish for a world free of stigma? Or is it utopian to wish for full acceptance?

/ AFTERLOVE

This collection comes from the internal quest for the time when I began designing. A stage that began with a family project involving my sister and me. This time had such an effect on me that I soon decided that my first collection would have to include references to when I was first involved in design and the relationship that grew with my family after that. This collection presents an absolutely idyllic figure of a winner and includes extravagant and abstract elements. Femininity is of prime importance; it is the genesis of the creation of the clothes that represent women. In this collection, I tell a story where the characters live on exaggeration, eccentricity, clothing styles and the way they dress. They form a subculture of different values. It’s a fantasy that takes us to a different world. A world where the exaggerated is celebrated, where there is no fear of extremes.

Pasmo begins with Helena da Presa, my grandmother, who, when decorating the house with wild flowers on Easter Sunday, ends up innocently removing them from their natural environment. The starting point is taking natural elements out of context, the focus is aimed at specific elements, which appear associated with manual production techniques such as traditional weaving, knitting and crochet. At the same time, retro-futuristic perspectives are explored, the presence of aliens as an element outside the norm and the reaction of human beings to their unknown presence. Paradoxically, religious references are put into practice, particularly the robes of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare in “Cântico das Criaturas” by Miguel Gomes. The word Pasmo (“astonishment”) refers to the poem “O meu olhar é nítido como um girassol” by Alberto Caeiro, and is used to describe the author’s feelings about the natural elements he discovers in a continuous, larger than life process.

The ‘Arquétipo’ collection features the subversion of dress codes through a new proposal for coordination (other than its primary function). It enhances men’s clothing worn by women. It redefines new essentials in wardrobes in a new dimension between what is private and intimate, by collecting layers associated with encapsulation. In this case, the idea is to create a balance in the male world, breathing new life into classics. Generating harmony through oppositions and an intermediary space of possibility and availability, or materiality through accumulation. The proportions are changed, creating exaggerated sizes that contrast with tight, clinging layers; all of these factors are exaggerated through the colours and the materials used.

ARCANA é inspirada na carta “The High Priestess”, 2º Arcano Maior do Tarot. É o despertar do lado místico feminino.

ARCANA is inspired by the “The High Priestess”, the 2nd Major Arcane in Tarot. It refers to the esoteric, the unknown, which has intrigued mankind since time immemorial - female intuition. A serene, confident female figure is portrayed, with the moon at her feet (symbol of fear and insecurity) and a book in her hands (symbol of knowledge and wisdom). She is someone who sees all but reveals nothing. She represents the balance between opposing forces through the presence of two pillars: one black (with the letter B for Boaz) and one white (with the letter J for Jachin). ARCANA was created from the balance of contrasts: Feminine/Masculine; Aesthetics/ Comfort; Rationality/Intuition; Wealth/Neediness. Unique items made from quality materials, with contemporary lines and shapes that are balanced between the organic and the architectural. It is the awakening of the feminine, mystic side.

Notwithstanding this past, Cape Verdeans are humble people with amazing joie-de-vivre. The silhouettes, the volumes and the mixtures of patterns were inspired by traditional clothing in Cape Verde. Some of the items contain “panu di terra”, a fabric that is considered to be national heritage in Cape Verde. The prints in different shades represent the mixtures featured in the Cape Verdean people and the faces of those who did much for their country and are a deserved homage to the country. It is the awakening of the feminine, mystic side.

IMAGEM: Sal Nunkachov /

/ HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN COORDINATING BLOOM?

— I started out on this adventure in January 2017; so far, I've coordinated 7 events and this will be my 8th.

/ HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE?

— It's been very gratifying being able to help these young designers and being part of the development of their labels, feeling that some of them have secured their place on the Portuguese fashion panorama, as well as some achievements at international level.

/ WHAT'S THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE NEW DESIGNERS?

— To believe in their abilities, to be humble and enterprising. To listen to any inputs from the people helping them in order to be able to deal with any problems they may face along the way.

/ DO YOU THINK THE FUTURE OF FASHION IS IN GOOD HANDS?

— Portuguese fashion has given lots of designers the opportunity to show off their work on the many existing platforms. Only time will tell if fashion is in good hands and on the right path. But to do this, we need to provide support tools to help to consolidate their labels and forge a promising future for the Portuguese fashion.

/ CREATIVITY VERSUS HARD WORK. WHICH IS MOST IMPORTANT?

— Creativity is always welcome when you're talking about young designer labels. However, creativity alone is not enough; you need to work hard to bring creativity to life.

/ WHAT DO THE ‘BLOOMERS’ NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

— Several factors are involved in the success of the “Bloomers”. Passion for what they do, their own identity, being hard-working and responsible. I believe that with the right support from the industry and associations, their success will be quite different. Many young designers achieve a lot of their growth alone and working in isolation. At any given time, there has to be a change for them to achieve stability for their labels, clearly define their label strategy at different levels and know how to develop in a sensible and controlled manner.

/ IF YOU DIDN'T WORK IN FASHION, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

— If I had to change my profession, maybe I'd be a chef; it would be a new creative adventure.

/ HOW IMPORTANT IS A PLATFORM LIKE BLOOM?

— Platforms that give visibility to young designers are always important. Allowing young people to express their ideas and creativity is a key aspect for their projects to growth and the identity of the Portuguese fashion to be renovated.

/ WHAT'S YOUR BEST MEMORY OF BLOOM?

— It's been four years of good memories that I will keep with me, but if I had to choose one, it would probably be the first Bloom event I did. For the thrill of the challenge and because it was the beginning of a new stage in my career.
