STEM Red Penguin Heather Wells Marketing and Communications Officer Heather leveraged her experience in logistics and a degree in BSc Tourism Management (Hons) and entered the relatively unheard-of industry of Subsea Cable Engineering. These industries are made up of Telecommunications (building the internet, these cables allow streaming and social media), Power (connecting countries to share green energy) and Offshore Renewables (cables connecting offshore wind farms to land). Heather plays a critical role in shaping the company’s strategy by analysing competitors; tracking market trends; constructing and managing the marketing budget; organising, attending, and speaking at global conferences; and networking with new and potential clients. These clients include various well known social media companies, search engine companies, and global buying platforms and government bodies. Heather particularly enjoys building brand awareness for not only Red Penguin but the industry itself, working towards bringing young people and women into this exciting niche engineering sector.
Eleanor Skinner Bid Assistant In September 2020, Ellie joined Red Penguin for a placement year between her second and final year of her studies at the University of Portsmouth. During this time, she gained experience in all aspects of the company including operations, projects, commercial, marketing, HR, QHSE, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). By the end of her placement Ellie was managing office based global projects which included report writing, client engagement, and project delivery. Having graduated with a 1st BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology she rejoined Red Penguin as a Bid Assistant. Within this role Ellie is responsible for identifying and winning new business, including all associated support tasks. These tasks include but are not limited to tracking commercial enquiries, updating the CRM and various trackers, facilitating, and contributing to the bid/no bid process as well as assisting in commercial and contractual assessments. Ellie also assists in the preparation and submission of tenders and is gaining experience writing bids across multiple sectors including power interconnectors, fibre optic cables and offshore wind farm export cables. Having entered the industry almost by accident, she was pleased to speak at an ESCA Plenary about her experience as a young woman in the Subsea Cable Industry and how she is excited to continue her journey and development in the future.

Forensic Science Anna Chaussée - BA (Hons) PG Cert MSc SFHEA MCSFS Portsmouth High School alumna, class of 2002 Anna Chaussée is a Senior Lecturer in Forensics at the University of Winchester teaching and conducting research in forensic archaeology. Anna is the founder and Director of the University of Winchester Cold Case Unit investigating long-term missing person cases, and she also provides consultancy for documentary filmmakers. She has worked with numerous police forces in the UK dealing with the search and recovery of human remains in forensic settings. Anna has provided training in forensic archaeological awareness for the relicensing of search officers for police forces in the south of England. Anna received her BA (Hons) Archaeology and Ancient History degree from the University of Exeter (2007) and her MSc in Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology at Cranfield University (2008). Anna has taught at various universities including Glyndwr University (North Wales) the University of Exeter, and continuing education departments at the University of Reading and Oxford University.

Uniforms Senior Non-Commissioned Officer – Sgt Andrew Cartledge British Army Andrew joined the British Army in March 2006 he is a Logistic Specialist (Supplier). To date has completed 16 years of exemplary service. Highlights of his career include 2 Operational Tours to Iraq & Afghanistan spending 6 months on each deployment, multiple trips to Canada where he took part in training exercises and adventurous training. With vast Trade & Military knowledge under his belt Sgt Cartledge is delighted to now work as a Careers Advisor & Recruitment coordinator in his first year in the Army Careers Office in Portsmouth in Cambridge Road.

Matt Foster RAF Matt joined the Royal Air Force in September 2009 and trained as an Intelligence Analyst, before choosing to specialise in Imagery Intelligence. He has been posted to various bases around the UK including RAF Waddington, MOD Main Building and RAF Wyton working on various Intelligence products such as Route Studies and Preparation of the Environment. Highlights of his career include sports tours to Netherlands and Germany, and deployments to Afghanistan and Oman. This is Matt’s second posting to RAF Recruitment, the first one as a recruiter at AFCO Portsmouth and now working in Careers Engagement with hundreds of Educational Establishments across the South East.

Money, money, money Tahir Ahmed, FCA, ACMA, BSc (Hons) Accountant Tahir is the Founder and CEO of BC&A Chartered Accountants in Southsea, providing accounting, tax, company secretarial, payroll, business advisory, and tax investigation services to 1,500+ individuals and businesses. Prior to running the practice, Tahir was Santander bank’s Pricing Manager for their UK market for 7 years and prior to banking he held various Financial Analyst roles at Ford Motor Company for 8 years. Tahir is a qualified Chartered Accountant in England and Wales (ICAEW) and also a Chartered Management Accountant (CIMA). Tahir studied BSc (Hons) Accounting and Financial Management at Loughborough University.
Kelly Jones Accountant After leaving school it took Kelly a few years to decide that she wanted to become an accountant, she then started evening college to complete her AAT. After completing the first 2 levels she moved into her first accounting role in management accounting to start her career, however later found that working in an accounting practice was most suited to her skills. After completing the AAT, she went on to complete her ACCA. In 2020 Kelly moved into lecturing and assessing at a local college for a year and has since settled into a new role, back in an accounting practice at BC&A Chartered Accountants.

Caring Professions Justyn Loveridge BSc BVSc MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon Justyn left school with his A Levels in 1999. He was not offered a place when he first applied to veterinary school. Justyn was hugely disappointed but took a gap year and reapplied after his A-levels. He used the year to gain more work experience at various farms and veterinary practices and secured a place to study Veterinary Medicine at Bristol University. Justyn qualified in 2006 having taken an extra year on his degree to intercalate in Zoology at Liverpool University. Upon graduation he worked in a small veterinary practice in the New Forest for 6 years before opening Vets4Pets in Portsmouth in 2012. Justyn now has a team of 15 staff and has owned his own practice for 10 years.
Dr Sadaf Khan Senior Registrar Obstetrics & Gynaecology Having graduated from Nistar Medical College in Pakistan in 1996 at the age of 23, Dr Khan then specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After a short career break, when moving to the UK with her family, Dr Khan retrained and registered with the General Medical Council returning to work as a Specialist registrar. Having spent 9 years in pursuit of this career and having achieved additional post graduate qualifications, she now continues to follow her challenging career with great enthusiasm in her role as Senior Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth. Dr Khan is married and has 2 daughters.
Debbie Withers Dental Therapist Debbie started her career in dentistry as a Dental Nurse in 1996, working in general dental practice. Then in 2004, Debbie completed the Foundation Award in Science & Dental Therapy at the University of Portsmouth, which ensured a place on the full-time BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene & Dental Therapy course. Once qualified in 2008, Debbie worked in a mixture of NHS, private and community dental services, and is now a full-time Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy.
Dr Hannah Cassidy Psychology Hannah is a Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology at the University of Brighton. Her teaching covers a variety of psychological areas, with a speciality in forensic topics and developmental psychology. She is the Lead for the ‘Understanding Childhood and Adolescence’ Research Excellence Group. She studied Psychological and Educational Sciences as an undergraduate, followed by a Masters in Forensic Psychology, and a PhD in Forensic Psychology. She has taught at the University of Brighton for the past 6 years and is Course Leader for the BA Psychology & Criminology degree.

Caring Professions Maria Darcy Midwife I qualified as a midwife in 2016 from the University of Surrey. My midwifery training and preceptorship was based at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital where I developed a particular interest in caring for people with higher risk pregnancies and complex medical background. To further my skills within this area I moved my career to London in Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea hospital. I commenced work in the triage and MDAU unit, then rotated to labour ward and was successfully appointed into the specialised Obstetric HDU team. Here we cared for patients that were medically complex, with significant pre-existing health conditions and multi-morbidities. During the pandemic I moved to Princess Anne Hospital to be closer to family. I worked predominately on labour and in HDU and became a member of practice education team in August 2022. I am now the Lead Practice Education Midwife, leading a team of Midwives who educate and train obstetric and midwifery staff. Katt Vaal Midwife I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2013. My first job as a registered midwife was with Portsmouth Hospitals and here I consolidated my training as a rotational midwife. During my time at Portsmouth Hospitals, I developed a keen interest for education and development. I was supported to complete a PGCE in Clinical Education and in 2019 I started working in Hampshire Hospitals Education Department as the lead for the Internationally Educated Nurses NMC preparation programme. This role enabled me to progress further and complete my Master’s in Medical Education with the University of Winchester. I joined UHS Maternity in May 2022 and quickly secured a secondment to the Practice Education Team as lead for statutory and mandatory training in maternity. I am now a permanent member of the education team where I am the lead support for students and work closely with the University of Southampton to ensure our students receive the best practice education whilst on placement. Elizabeth Olabode Pharmacist Elizabeth grew up in London and took GCSEs at Archbishop Michael’s Ramsey School. Elizabeth went on to study biology, chemistry and physics for A Level in the hope of studying medicine. Towards the end of her A Levels Elizabeth realised medicine was not for her because she struggled with biology. Elizabeth studies at the University of Portsmouth taking Pharmacy having spent a year at the University of Brighton studying pharmaceutical and chemical sciences. Since then Elizabeth has worked as Head Manager at Lloyd’s pharmacy for ten years. Within this role, she was also able to help newly qualified pharmacists. Elizabeth is currently self employed as a locum pharmacist which she has done for the past 5 years.

Law and Order Large and Gibson Large and Gibson have been providing legal services in and around Portsmouth, Southsea and the surrounding areas for over 120 years. The company have formed a great relationship with Portsmouth High School over many years, and enjoy working alongside them in various projects, including offering support with students wishing to embark upon a legal career, where possible. Laura Mailey Family and Litigation Paralegal Laura joined the firm in 2019 with experience as a legal assistant in various areas of the law. In 2015 Laura graduated with a 1st in business management and in 2023 qualified as a Specialist Paralegal in Family Law through the University of Law. Laura is exploring her options to undertake a Masters law conversion with SQE to progress her career.
Ben Monaghan-Jupp Private Client Paralegal Ben joined Large and Gibson in January 2023 having previously worked in another local firm. Ben joined Large & Gibson to build on his experience in the legal profession. Ben obtained his law degree at the University of Hull and graduated with a 2:1 Bachelor’s Degree in July 2022. Ben is currently studying the LPC with aspirations to becoming a fully qualified solicitor.
Georgina Pickering Graduate Legal Executive Georgina joined Large and Gibson in August 2023 after having worked for large local firms over the last 15 years. Georgina is a conveyancer and specialise in legal matters for when people move house, so typically she deals with sales, purchases, remortgages and transfers. Georgina’s journey has not been straight forward, or as planned, but she have a great sense of pride for still achieving what she set out to do. Georgina completed a HND in Law and graduated with a Distinction and she was awarded the Southampton City Council Award for most outstanding student in her year. She then went on to complete her Law Degree in 2005. Georgina had a son and picked up her legal career again taking the CILEX route, therefore avoiding the traditional LPC and training contract route due to the costs and risk this option carries. Georgina has worked her way up from Reception to now running her own caseload, which she have now done for many years. Page 10

Law and Order Police Sergeant Matthew James Police Officer Matt has been with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary for 22 years working a variety of civilian roles across call management and as a PCSO; before becoming a Police Officer in 2010. Matt has worked in a variety of roles including Response and Neighbourhood Policing at various stations and is currently serving as a custody sergeant in Portsmouth. Matt is a qualified Police operations planner and has policed numerous large events such as the Olympics Games in London, various music festivals, DDAY 75 and the G7 summit in Cornwall. During the Pandemic Matt served on the forces’ Covid operational team. Since 2016 Matt has been the Unit Leader of the Police Cadets based here at the High School who are currently recruiting for new cadets.
PC Emily John Police Officer PHS Alumna and Class of 2021 Emily left Portsmouth High School in 2021, and during her time at PHS was a Police Cadet. The Cadet Unit completely changed Emily’s outlook and aspirations and helped her achieve the career she has now by giving her skills for life. The skills you learn in the cadet unit you can apply to any aspect of your everyday life.You can make a real difference to those around you by volunteering in your community. The scheme was a real eye opener and made Emily passionate about joining the police. Emily applied for the Police at 18 and was accepted. Emily managed to go travelling in New Zealand, Australia and South East Asia before taking up the role. She is now into the second year of her career with the Police currently on track to achieve a 1st on the Policing degree apprenticeship course, as well as now being a cadet leader for the past three years with the Unit. Emily is passionate about going into work every day and striving to make a difference to people stating ‘this is the most rewarding job ever’. Emily was mentored on a Neighbourhood Police Team at Bordon and is about to do her blue light driving course and join a response team based in Andover.

Creative Professions Rachael Butt Architecture Rachael is a Masters of Architecture graduate who is currently employed at Stride Treglown as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant. Stride Treglown is a large multidisciplinary practice which has allowed Rachael to gain experience in a wide range of architectural projects in various sectors. Having recently graduated herself, she is familiar with the university process and the various routes which lead to becoming an architect. Rachael is currently undertaking her final years of practice experience before completing her Part 3 to become a fully qualified architect.

James Thomson Executive Producer / Director James has three decades of experience in film, multimedia and digital production, across healthcare, consumer goods, finance, telecoms, energy, maritime, defence, real estate and travel sectors in the UK, Spain, France and the Middle East. In his five years with The Moment / TCEG, James has produced and directed a wide array of film, animation, immersive and digital projects. His Virtual Reality Presenter Training for Global (Capital FM / Heart FM / LBC etc.) won three awards, including two Golds in the 2018 Real IT Awards.
Mark Waldron Editor, The News Mark Waldron has been Editor of The News in Portsmouth since September 2007. It marked a return to his ‘home town’ paper as he grew up just outside the city and started his journey into journalism through training at Highbury College. Mark’s career has taken him from the Aldershot News and Mail to the Sunday Sun in Melbourne, the Hull Daily Mail and the South Wales Echo in Cardiff. He sealed his first editor’s post at the Swindon Advertiser in May 2004, where he worked until the move to The News. Mark is married with four children and is passionate about Portsmouth and encouraging young people to become the next generation of trusted, local journalists. Page 12

Theatre Careers Paul Woolf Paul has extensive experience of the entertainment and media industries specialising in entertainment law and business management, producing film, TV and theatre, and owning recording studios. When he was in law practice his clients included Level 42, Madness, Tears for Fears, the filmmakers of Highlander, and the Superman series. Paul has always loved the theatre and has produced a number of shows including Calamity Jane, A View from the Bridge and The Rat Pack. Paul owns the recording studio Strongroom in Shoreditch, London and coowned the internationally renowned Air Studios until 2018. In 2018 he became the CEO at the Kings Theatre. In 2020 he produced the first in-house pantomime and has produced them all since then. He has also introduced in-house community productions - the first being Titanic – The Musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Grease, and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is planned for 2024.

Jack Edwards Jack has had a long career as an actor. He has performed in the West End, across the UK and around the world. His roles include: Nicely Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls in the West End, Mr Bumble In Cameron Mackintosh’s Oliver!, Eddie and Dr Scott in the European tour of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the grave digger in Ken Hills’ Phantom of the Opera UK tour, and he played alongside Michael Ball as Fatty Arbuckle in Mack & Mabel and Rupert Everett in Amadeus at the Chichester Festival Theatre. He is also a famous Pantomime Dame, appearing at the Kings as Dame in the last seven pantomimes. Jack is now an integral part of the Kings Theatre in his capacity as Artistic Director and as Associate Producer in its Production Team. Since joining in early 2019, Jack has successfully diversified and increased the programme of shows and events at the theatre, establishing it as a leading venue on the south coast and the home of the now famous Pompey Panto. Jack has played a key role in the development of the community production programme giving local people the chance to perform at the theatre. Jack directed the critically acclaimed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Little Shop of Horrors at the Kings in 2023.

Business - Behind the scenes Amanda Sutton Neame & Sutton,Town Planning Amanda holds a degree and diploma in Town and Country Planning (University of the West of England) and is a corporate member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (elected 1999), with over 20 years’ experience in planning and development in both the public and private sector. Along with her business partner, Amanda set up Neame Sutton Ltd in 2000. Neame Sutton is a small planning consultancy that provides specialist planning advice to a wide range of clients, predominantly within the housebuilding industry.
Sharon Pearce Area Human Resources Manager Sharon is currently Area Human Resources Manager for IKEA working with several stores from Birmingham down to Exeter. Her role also includes working with our Peterborough units where they have both a large distribution centre and call centre. Sharon has worked for IKEA for over 25 years having fallen in love with the brand and the values of the company. Sharon has held many roles within IKEA, all within Human Resources, including being an HR Manager for the Lakeside & Tottenham stores and an HR Manager in one of the Distribution Centres. Sharon also spent time working in the Head Office where she held the roles of Talent & Succession Manager then Leadership & Competence Manager for IKEA UK & Ireland. From an education perspective Sharon has studied History, Economics & Political Studies at A’ level before attending Cardiff University where she gained a BSc (Hons) in Management Studies & Industrial Relations. Sharon then went on to complete my CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development).

Business - Behind the scenes Professor Sarah Turnbull PhD, MBA, MSc, FCIM, DipM, FHEA Sarah is a Professor in Marketing at the University of Portsmouth. Sarah has published five books on marketing communications including, Marketing Communications: fame, influencers and agility (2023) and Absolute Essentials of Advertising (2022). She is on the Editorial Review Board of the International Journal of Advertising and the Journal of Advertising Education. Sarah has published her research in leading international journals including; Marketing Theory, International Journal of Advertising and Psychology & Marketing. Sarah has an advertising agency background and worked on a number of global accounts, including Emirates. Sarah is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Liveryman of The Worshipful Company of Marketors and is Head Examiner for the industry’s professional body the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA).
Dr. Judith Fletcher-Brown PhD, MSc, MA, LLB, MCIM, Cert Ed, FHEA. Associate Professor in Social Marketing: Advocating for positive behavioural interventions for vulnerable consumers Judith is a marketing academic at the University of Portsmouth UK, with professional experience in marketing communications. Although originally qualifying in law, she pursued a career in the media and publishing. Judith transferred to lecturing on a full-time basis and has been teaching marketing for over 20 years. Her research area focusses on social marketing and health and wellbeing behavioural interventions primarily to improve equality for women. Judith is currently pioneering the development of a mobile health App, for use by community nurses in India. Also, she is undertaking research into the role of brands in the prevention of violence against women and girls at night. Judith has articles published in top tier, peer-reviewed journals including International Journal of Research in Marketing and Journal of Business Research and continues to make significant contributions to knowledge of vulnerable consumers and consumer engagement.
Shanjita Sharwin PhD Researcher and Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth’s (UoP) Department of Strategy, Marketing, and Innovation (Business and Law). Research Topic: Improving the well-being and safety of adolescent females experiencing violence/abuse: Exploring strategic co-design interventions for fostering attitudinal and behavioural transformation within the socio-economic context of the Global South. Supervised by Dr Judith Fletcher-Brown (UoP), Dr Karen Middleton (UoP) and Prof. Sarah Turnbull (UoP).

Getting you there Gail Alani University of Southampton Gail Alani is the Head of UK Student Recruitment at the University of Southampton with 20 years’ experience supporting young people, parents, teachers and advisors make informed higher education choices. Gail has responsibility for the delivery of a wide range of educational activities and events both on and off campus, including talks and workshops on a variety of HE topics and CPD opportunities for careers and higher education advisors. Her team works in close partnership with colleagues in the widening access and admissions teams, with the overall aim of attracting the best possible students from a wide range of backgrounds.
Emma Gotz Degree Apprenticeships Emma Gotz is an experienced, independent careers advisor who is speaking on behalf of ASK, Apprenticeship Skills & Knowledge. Emma will be talking about alternatives to university at 18 and the opportunities presented by higher and degree level apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are very definitely not just for aspiring mechanics.
Talk at 1830 Caitlin Ellis InvestIN InvestIN provides immersive career experiences for students aged 12-18 in 18 different industries, from the ever-popular Medicine and Law, to more up and coming careers like Video Game Design and Forensic Science. All their programmes are run by top industry professionals and allow students to get a hands-on insight into their dream career through interactive simulations, networking opportunities and industry-specific career coaching. InvestIN offer one-day taster sessions on Sundays throughout term time or more immersive programmes for 5, 10 or 15 days in length in the summer. Opportunities take place in-person at UCL London, but live online alternatives are also available. Caitlin is a Partner Development Manager at InvestIN Education and is excited to speak with students today about InvestIN’s offering. InvestIN Education are an organisation dedicated to bridging the gap between school and industry by equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the future. They predominantly do this by providing immersive career experiences for students aged 12-18 in 15 different industries, from the popular Medicine and Law, through to up-and-coming careers like International Politics and Forensic Science.
