Portledge Bowl This distinction is awarded by the Board of Trustees upon the vote of the faculty to “that senior who best exemplifies the character and values Portledge holds in the highest esteem,” and is widely regarded as the most distinguished recognition awarded at Portledge School. This year, we have two such students receiving this award:
KYLE LEE & MASON LEE
KYLE LEE
To exemplify the character and values Portledge holds in the highest esteem across an entire high school career is an immense task. To find a student who completely embodies that standard is rare. But this year, the faculty found two. The Portledge Bowl is being awarded to a powerhouse duo who have spent the last four years operating as the absolute heartbeat of our community. Having worked with them for four years, Ms. White unequivocally states: “They are two students who have had an unbelievable impact on our community, and they just never let you down. No request is too much, and every response is met with 100% detail, infused with respect, purpose, and kindness.” Identical twins, academic superstars, elite varsity athletes, and quintessential culture keepers, Kyle and Mason Lee are, quite frankly, really good at just about everything.
Ms. Wu notes that no matter how far apart they are seated during class activities, their answers remain uncannily identical! Yet, beneath the identical smiles lies a beautiful individual dynamic. Kyle is a little more serious, fiercely independent, and acts as a quiet protector, often looking out for his brother's needs and managing the emotions of the room. He never seeks the spotlight for his efforts, content to stand back with a proud, quiet smile to watch Mason shine—knowing full well that Mason will instantly turn around to share the applause with him. Mason, on the other hand, is the ultimate "Can-Do" kid—buoyant, deeply charismatic, and a natural, magnetic force of energy. Academically, they are an absolute tour de force. Ms. Crowley notes that in her eleven years at Portledge, she can think of no other students who have tackled as many advanced, brutal curriculum requirements as these two. Both skipped Advanced Chemistry to go straight to AP; both jumped from Advanced Algebra 2 straight to AP Calculus. Both achieved early induction into the Cum Laude Society. But what truly elevates Kyle and Mason to the pinnacle of this award is their unshakable moral compass. They are the ultimate upstanders, never bystanders. As founders of the Asian Student Association and editors of the Portledge Press, they have fundamentally shaped our student culture, whether they are reading stories to our Lower Schoolers during Lunar New Year or teaching time management to our Middle Schoolers.

KYLE LEE & MASON LEE As the President and Vice President of the Student Council, they helped transform our Friday morning assemblies, moving through the agenda with a quick-witted, inclusive grace that brought the entire community together. Their unrelenting grit is visible on the athletic fields. Watching Mason play striker on the Varsity Soccer team is an exercise in pure optimism and determination. He chases down every single loose ball at full speed, forcing errors from opposing goalies through sheer, unadulterated hustle, and capitalizing on every sliver of opportunity. Mr. Lameiro summarizes the legacy of these extraordinary brothers beautifully: “Their moral compasses point in the direction of each of our pillars. This orientation toward
MASON LEE
the good has led them all the way to the choice to attend West Point—not because of personal pride or braggadocio, but because when they had a choice between putting themselves or their country first, they chose their country. How much better would we all be if there were more Lee kids around?” They will be attending the United States Military Academy at West Point in the fall, and we think that for years to come, people on this campus will ask, "Do you remember those twins from the Class of 2026 who did it all, and did it with such immense humility and grace?"

Slanetz Award The Slanetz Award is awarded to that member or members of the Senior Class whose academic record shows the highest level of achievement throughout his or her sophomore, junior, and senior years at Portledge, and is given in the hope that this scholar will apply his/her intellectual ability to the improvement of the human condition and for the well-being of others.
PRAJNA JAIN This year’s Slanetz Award recipient is deeply admired by the faculty for her fierce intellect, profound moral compass, and a quiet but razor-sharp wit. To perfectly summarize her relationship with education, her mother recently uncovered a journal entry from her third-grade year, in which she wrote: “Today I did my homework, and it was fun.” Not much has changed. Looking through her teacher recommendations, it is clear she has spent her time in the Upper School completely redefining what it means to be a studentscholar. Ms. Crowley notes that she is “unusually mature and focused... a true intellectual who thrives on academic challenge and deep intellectual discourse.” In the classroom, her understated nature should never be mistaken for detachment. According to Ms. Rigg, she is deeply tuned in at all times, has a fantastic sense of humor, and possesses the unique ability to “put someone in their place and still maintain integrity.” Ms. Tettemer describes her as an incredibly independent and inquisitive learner who brings the steady hand and discipline of her competitive equestrian life directly into her studies, adding that “while others might be content with the ‘what,’ Prajna is always digging for the ‘why.’” Nowhere was that relentless pursuit of the "why" more evident than in her IB English class. Ms. Paik detailed a legendary research paper where a standard prompt turned into a graduate-level deep dive. Prajna chose to analyze the "bimbo" stereotype by comparing Ibsen’s A Doll’s House to the movie Legally Blonde, ultimately tracking the cultural history of the trope all the way back to 18th-century French courtesans. Reading through the sheer depth of her research, Ms. Paik simply remarked, “I envy her future professors.” When she isn't drafting master's-thesis-level outlines, Prajna serves as a lead lawyer on our Mock Trial team, is a member of the Language Honor Society, and was recently granted the New York State Seal of Biliteracy—even designing an escape room puzzle to mentor our 5th-grade Spanish students. She was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior, and stands as one of the very few students in modern Portledge history to be recognized by the faculty with an Academic Excellence or Love of Learning award across every single academic discipline. She’ll be attending Georgetown University in the fall.

Barbara Lisanne Ayers Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship
The Barbara Lisanne Ayers Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholarship is presented annually to that member of the graduating class who, throughout their career at Portledge, has best exemplified the character and achievement of Barbara Lisanne Ayers (Class of 1977) through profound devotion to learning, together with a consistently high level of academic accomplishment.
AVERY JOSHUA-TOR When reviewing the journey of this year’s recipient, the word that repeatedly surfaces in every departmental recommendation is "Renaissance woman." She is a student who doesn't merely collect achievements; she pursues knowledge for the sheer, quiet honor of learning. Her passion for inquiry was cultivated early, and she has consistently chosen our most rigorous science and mathematics curriculum. Her IB Math teacher calls her the strongest student in a highly rigorous two-year course, and her IB Physics teacher noted she was the only student to consistently earn full marks on assessments. What truly separates her, however, is her profound ethical core. She values process over achievement, and principle over prize. Known for her outstanding work ethic, original thinking, and industriousness, she is sincerely earnest in her desire to always do her best work with the highest degree of honor. In a class of high achievers, it means something profound to be known not only as a stellar student but as a true model of integrity for her peers. Avery's intellectual life moves seamlessly between the laboratory and the piano. As a musician, her talent is breathtaking. Her perfect scores at NYSSMA Festivals earned her a rare invitation to audition for the New York State School Music Conference. Rather than resting on her classical laurels, she courageously pushed her boundaries in her solo chamber class, mastering Jazz, R&B, and contemporary styles. In science, her footprint is already historic. Our college counseling office noted that in eleven years, Portledge has never seen a student execute research as vast or significant as Avery’s. From winning the Long Island Science Congress Award to being one of just 15 students selected for a prestigious fellowship at Brookhaven National Laboratory, she will graduate as a named, published author on a professional paper bridging physics and neuroscience. She is a compassionate leader, a world-class talent, and a true beacon of honor. She’ll be attending UC Berkeley in the fall.

Head of School Award The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.
KINDNESS CARSYN CAMMERER This student has really impressed me with her talents, but most importantly, her kindness towards others. One faculty member said of this student: “I have never seen her have a negative conversation with literally anyone. She is one of the most compassionate and kind students I have had the pleasure of meeting this year. Whether it is through one-on-one meetings or just passing me in the hallways, it is evident that she truly does care about her peers, teachers, advisors, and everyone else in between.” She is also the type of student who I have seen work hard at making the arts "cool" again. She has made it her mission to breathe new life into the arts, working hard to make creativity feel relevant and exciting for her generation. Music? She performs singing and playing guitar in Coffeehouses, and sings in the select chorus. Theatre? She participates with enthusiasm in the Upper School musicals. Visual Arts? She has shared her considerable artistic ability with us through her stunning contributions to our yearbooks. Showing versatility of style, she designed and drew the visually beautiful dividers in the 2024 yearbook and the brash graffiti style cover for the 2025 book. In all these endeavors, she has shown herself to be one of the most compassionate and genuinely caring people to walk the halls of Portledge this year. Whether in a one-on-one conversation or a simple passing greeting in the hallway, it is impossible to miss how deeply she cares about her peers, her teachers, her advisors, her school, and everyone she encounters along the way. She has impressed with her talents time and again — but it is always her warmth and her heart that leave the most lasting impression. This year’s Head of School Award for Kindness goes to Carsyn Cammerer. Enjoy the energy of Tennessee University next year; the Vols are lucky to have you.

Head of School Award The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.
KINDNESS JACK GILLIES This student was one of the first students to make a really positive impression when the year began—and that first impression has never faded. From the moment he walks into a room, the energy shifts. He has a rare ability to lift spirits, draw out smiles, and remind the people around him to be present in the moment. He asks great questions in class, sparking thoughts in other students that move the learning process forward. What makes him truly special, though, is that he never seeks the spotlight for himself. He is happiest supporting others—something he has shown time and again through the countless hours he has put into sound work behind the scenes of Portledge's performances, making sure everyone else gets their moment to shine. As a college counseling staff member said recently, “That spirit of quiet, generous service has not gone unnoticed. When our Denison representative visited campus and met with him, she shared afterward that he was one of the kindest and most genuinely good young people she had ever encountered. It is a sentiment that anyone who knows him would echo without hesitation.” This year’s Head of School Award for Kindness goes to Jack Gillies, who will be attending Denison next year.

Head of School Award The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.
HONOR OLGA MARKOVIC This recipient is the kind of person who calls no attention to herself and yet leaves a lasting impression on everyone she encounters. A serious intellectual powerhouse, she has challenged herself across every discipline since ninth grade and before, earning early induction into the Cum Laude Society in recognition of her integrity, dedication, and genuine love of learning. Her teachers struggle to find adequate words — one veteran educator wrote simply that in many years of teaching, this student is someone who has made quite an impression, that her calm confidence, positive attitude, and focused approach set her apart from most others, and that they cannot say enough good things about her. She is a gifted literary thinker, a precise and extraordinary scientific writer, a thoughtful historian, and an exemplary classmate who lifts everyone around her. On the tennis court, before her high school tennis career was cut short by a terrible injury, she brought the same composure, discipline, and competitive spirit she brings to everything else. This student does not lead loudly—she leads by example, by showing up fully, by doing the work with impeccable good nature, and by treating every person and every endeavor with the same quiet grace. She is, as those who know her best will tell you, simply one of the best of this class—and by extension one of the best of Portledge. The recipient of this year’s Head of School Award for Honor is Olga Markovic. We wish you all the best at Vanderbilt University next year!

Head of School Award The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.
HONOR ROWAN SHENOY This recipient arrived at Portledge as a freshman with a clear sense of purpose and has spent every year since living up to it with remarkable integrity. He came specifically for the school's science research and Robotics opportunities, and from day one, he gave everything he had — stepping immediately into a leadership role on the Robotics team, mentoring students older than himself, and establishing a research mentorship with his IB Physics teacher. He is one of the most decorated students in the Class of 2026: a Cum Laude Society inductee, a STEAM Scholar, an IB Diploma candidate taking the most rigorous curriculum the school offers, and a recipient of the Academic Excellence and Love of Learning Awards in Science and Educational Technology every single year since ninth grade. His research journey has taken him from exploring AI-driven vehicles as a freshman to spending last summer as a hired investigator on an NSF-funded ultrasound fracture healing study — working professionally with stakeholders, writing Python programs, and building shared repositories entirely on his own initiative. It was noted in IB Economics that his scholarly attitude and positive presence have contributed meaningfully to the academic success of his peers. That is who he is: someone who does not hoard his gifts but shares them freely — teaching Robotics at his local Boys and Girls Club, mentoring elementary and middle school teams, and instructing young sailors every summer in Oyster Bay. He leads not by seeking recognition, but by showing up with consistency, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to doing things right. Portledge could not be prouder to call him one of its own. This Head of School Award for Honor goes to Rowan Shenoy. Good luck at Embry-Riddle’s elite Aeronautical University next year!

Head of School Award The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.
PURPOSE SKYLAR FRIEDMAN This student is intellectually curious in the truest sense of the word: not performing curiosity, but living it. A self-proclaimed math and science kid, he is equally at home dissecting the aerodynamic and political failures of the Messerschmidt in World War II, calculating the geometric precision of his favorite band, Lincoln Park's logo, and building a Lego trailer to model how weight distribution affects vehicle stability — each one an IB independent research project he pursued with the same infectious enthusiasm. That zeal extends far beyond the classroom. A stalwart Robotics team leader since middle school, this student spent last summer coding drones to fly in pairs at a Stony Brook University program and helping build a kamikaze drone at Vatn Systems — because for him, learning does not stop when school does. He has exhausted Portledge's Computer Science and Robotics offerings, elected the most demanding courses the IB Diploma program has to offer, earned early induction into the Cum Laude Society, and is on track to be a STEAM Scholar. He has also overcome profound personal challenges and channeled that resilience into extraordinary philanthropic work, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia — and finding the time and heart to write his first book along the way. Uncommonly earnest, deeply kind, and fueled by a work ethic that is second to none, he does not take shortcuts, does not seek the spotlight, and never stops asking the next question. He is, quite simply, one of a kind. This year’s recipient of the Head of School Award for Purpose goes to Skylar Friedman – good luck at Carnegie Mellon.

Head of School Award The Head of School awards are divided into four categories, each reflecting one of the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.
PURPOSE COLE SANVEREN This student has literally grown up at Portledge, and in many ways, her journey here tells the story of the school itself — a place where curiosity is nurtured, character is built, and loyalty runs deep. From early childhood through her final year as a remarkable senior, she has embodied what it means to show up fully, both as a scholar and as a friend. She is conscientious, mature beyond her years, and a person of great ambition. I witnessed firsthand her academic drive reach a remarkable milestone when she successfully led the Portledge investment team at the prestigious Wharton Business School competition, guiding her peers with confidence, strategic thinking, and poise under pressure. I also had the great privilege of seeing her naturally inquisitive nature blossom in my IB economics class this year, where she excelled in every unit of study. But ask those closest to her, and they will tell you that what defines her most is not any single achievement — it is the steadfast, generous friend she has been to everyone lucky enough to know her throughout these years. This student is the embodiment of all of the Portledge Pillars and could easily have been selected for any one of them. UVA is very fortunate to have her in their freshmen class this year. Congratulations to Cole Sanvaren as the recipient of this year's Head of School Award for Purpose.

RESPECT NIA GREEN This is a student who seems to be almost everywhere, all the time, and Portledge is immeasurably better for it. Curious, inclusive, community-minded, and fueled by an internal standard of excellence that never wavers, she approaches every corner of school life with energy, grit, and an open heart. As the only Black female and one of very few girls to earn the distinction of STEAM Scholar — holding her ground in spaces dominated by others to pursue her passion for robotics — she has also simultaneously met every requirement to be named an Arts Scholar, leading the saxophone section with a clarity of tone and musicianship that has her mentoring a middle schooler on Wednesday mornings before the day even begins. She is a two-time MVP in both Cross Country and Golf, a full IB Diploma candidate who voluntarily added IB Economics Year 2 simply because she loved Year 1 (and excelled in that subject, too, by the way!), and a student who switched to French mid-course and outworked the gap through sheer determination and grace. But beyond every achievement, it is her quality of character that sets her apart. When a colleague was alone in the office, she rallied the senior class to show extra patience and kindness. When a member of her community returned after a family health crisis, she was the first through the door to say she had been thinking of them. She rarely seeks the title or the accolade — she simply sees what is needed and steps up. Vivacious, driven, and genuinely good, Nia does not just respect her community — she elevates it. This first Head of School Award for the Respect Pillar goes to Nia Green, who will be attending Emory University in the fall.

RESPECT WILL YARIAN This next student is someone who, according to a close faculty member, ‘inspires awe. He arrived at Portledge from a school specializing in students with dyslexia, armed with hard-won strategies, an unshakeable work ethic, and a quiet determination to prove what is possible. He has excelled academically, persevered through multiple concussions sustained on the hockey ice, and met every obstacle in his path with grace and grit. But what elevates him beyond his own remarkable story is what he does with it. He visits middle school students who are struggling academically to offer his voice as one of comfort and living proof that a different kind of learner is not a lesser one. He has launched a podcast dedicated to reducing the stigma around learning disabilities and showing others how to find their own path to success. He walks the halls of Portledge with a genuine smile for everyone he passes, and treats every single person — student, teacher, and staff — with warmth and dignity. He does not just respect others; he respects himself enough to share his story so that someone else's journey might be a little easier. As one teacher put it ‘There are educators who will tell you, only half-jokingly, that they want to be him when they grow up — and honestly, it is hard to argue with that.” The second recipient of the Head of School’s Award for Respect is Will Yarian. All good wishes at SMU!

NATE BAHNIK
Our first recipient has been the definition of a leader. An outstanding student, athlete, and captain, she approached every challenge with preparation, determination, and a genuine desire to make those around her better. Whether it was arriving ready to work every day, mentoring younger teammates, or leading in the biggest moments, she consistently set the standard for excellence. Her impact extends far beyond the basketball court, and there is no doubt that the University of North Carolina is gaining an exceptional student-athlete and person. The first recipient of the Senior Athletic Award is Kennedy Abrahams. Our second recipient has spent years leaving his mark on Portledge athletics. A true multi-sport athlete, he competed in nearly everything he could and excelled wherever he went. His competitive spirit, toughness, and commitment made him a player every coach wanted on their team. His greatest legacy came on the lacrosse field, where he became one of the finest players to wear the blue and white, finishing his career with the remarkable milestones of 150 goals and 200 career points. More importantly, he grew into a leader who always put his team first and represented Portledge with pride. He will be attending Stevenson University next year to continue his lacrosse career. The second recipient of the Senior Athletic Award is Nate Bahnik. While their journeys were different, Kennedy and Nate share the qualities that define this award: excellence, leadership, character, and an unwavering commitment to their teammates and school. It has been an honor to watch both of them grow into the people they are today. Please join me in congratulating the recipients of the 2026 Senior Athletic Award, Kennedy Abrahams and Nate Bahnik.

Student Council Award
The Student Council Award is presented, upon vote of the Student Council members, to that student who has displayed outstanding school spirit and a commitment to the Portledge community throughout their involvement in academics, community service, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
RONDELL RABSATT
In January, I sent a positive to this student where I referenced his confidence and authority, as he channeled Dr. King and reflected on his role as a senior class officer. I shared that this student had developed into quite a leader without being the loudest in the room. I wrote that his quiet intention speaks volumes and that he made an impression on his peers and classmates during his presentation. In April, I wrote another positive about this year’s recipient’s involvement in student council, prom planning and participation in the school musical! I wrote “I am honored to be in the company of this renaissance man! Keep doing what you do and keep being you! You are beyond impressive and I am so proud of you!” As I stand here today, I am beaming with joy and I echo those same sentiments. I am thrilled to present this year’s Student Council Award to Rondell Rabsatt!

Senior Project Award
SENIOR PROJECT AWARDS OF DISTINCTION: The Senior Project Experience is the culminating Portledge academic experience. The project aims to explore an area of interest and to do something that matters. The opportunity allows students to investigate a problem, explore a belief, confront a challenge, or even take a risk, keeping in mind the criteria of creativity, activity, and service. This journey requires effort, focused attention, and dedication. Students worked diligently on projects throughout the year that required them to be creative, focused on activity, and personal wellbeing, or that of others, and/or that involved serving others within the community. Congratulations to all seniors for completing your projects, learning throughout the process, and sharing your experiences with the Portledge community. It has been a true pleasure to witness the development and growth of these projects, and to see your creative and innovative ideas not only take shape but also teach you valuable life lessons as the project progresses. We hope that you all learned something valuable in this process that you can carry with you throughout the next chapter of your life beyond Portledge. Upon completion of presentations, the Senior Project Experience Committee met to review the students' proposals, processes, and deadlines, along with the faculty-graded presentations, and then selected projects that embodied the true purpose of this experience. We would like to take this opportunity to recognize Senior Projects of distinction.

SENIOR PROJECT AWARDS OF DISTINCTION:
CHARLIE DENNEHY & LILY FALTISCHEK
This inspiring Senior Project partnered with Sunrise Day Camp to bring joy and comfort to pediatric cancer patients navigating challenging hospital stays. Driven by a mission to spread kindness, the project engaged Portledge Lower School students to channel their creativity into crafting heartfelt, meaningful messages. By carefully guiding the younger children to move beyond simple cards to deeply thoughtful drawings, the initiative successfully fostered a widespread culture of encouragement and empathy. Through incredible organization, flexibility, and dedication, the project ultimately delivered over 200 handmade cards to brighten the days of children fighting illnesses. Celebrating this massive success, faculty advisor Ms. Lawn shared, "The two of you are headed places in life: you are excellent communicators; you are organized; you think ahead to anticipate possible problems; you take full ownership of your work, and you have a plan! This was one of the most well-run Senior Projects I have ever been a part of over the last 11 years, and you should feel proud." Please join us in congratulating the outstanding students behind this remarkable achievement, Lily Faltischek and Charlie Dennehy.

Senior Project Award
SENIOR PROJECT AWARDS OF DISTINCTION: SABRINA HEMLEY This project of excellence facilitated interactive art workshops where Portledge students designed personal family crests, beautifully bridging artistic expression with school heritage. Collaborating with Mrs. Benter and Mr. Meyers, this senior guided students through brainstorming sessions, using paper cutouts and lightboxes for creative inspiration. The students finalized their designs by writing narratives about their chosen symbols, which ranged from significant family birth years to national flags. This initiative directly mirrors the purpose of the historic Portledge crest, teaching students to view emblems as living testaments to their own roots and values. Furthermore, by celebrating the student body's diverse cultural lineages, the project championed the Portledge citizen pillars of exploring, creating, and excelling. Ultimately, the workshops fostered deep peer connections and mutual respect through the shared vulnerability of visual storytelling. Congratulations, Sabrina Hemley!
PRAJNA JAIN This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of the Shark Tank Junior initiative, a multi-step entrepreneurship and innovation program that guided middle school students from concept generation and market research to a professional business pitch before realworld professionals. Across every phase of this demanding project— from organizing the initial slideshow frameworks to ensuring the final presentations met the highest professional standards—one student has stood out for her exceptional leadership, deep engagement, and persistence. Her remarkable hard work and commitment throughout the past four years have been both inspiring and deeply impactful to the school community, making it a privilege to present this honor to Prajna Jain.

SENIOR PROJECT AWARDS OF DISTINCTION:
AVERY SKLAR To earn a Project of Distinction, this student undertook an ambitious, multidisciplinary research and creative process to conceive and write an original full-length play. Demonstrating immense scholarly maturity, the student synthesized deep medical research into the psychological realities of Alzheimer's disease, historical investigations into evolving family expectations, and specialized theater production design. When faced with significant logistical and scheduling obstacles that disrupted the initial plan for a student read-through, the student pivoted with remarkable adaptability and problem-solving. Ultimately, the student expanded the scope of the project to deliver a dual final product: a comprehensive, emotionally resonant original script and a meticulously hand-crafted stage diorama to visually map out the scenic architecture. This exceptionally thorough and deeply dedicated creative endeavor was researched, structured, and entirely executed by Avery Sklar.

Soleil’s contribution to the Concert and Select Choruses goes far beyond her exceptional skills as a vocalist. She is also a pianist and arranger who has an innate and mature musical sense. Soleil proactively sought out more responsibility this year, leading to a monumental achievement: arranging Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for the Winter Concert. Soleil independently mastered a complex new music notation program to arrange and write out the piece, which she then expertly taught to the class. She sang the principal melody and her unforgettable arrangement quickly became one of the students' favorite pieces to perform. Most recently, Soleil dedicated time to learning the piano accompaniment to Laufey’s "From the Start," a demanding song featuring dense chords and an advanced Bossa Nova groove. She also used her advanced understanding of harmony to create alto parts for several pieces and even led a rehearsal when Mr. Schwartz was out one day. Additionally, Soleil is comfortable singing and supporting any vocal section that needs help, all while maintaining an incredible attitude and serving as a beacon of positivity during every class meeting. Soleil represents the very highest standard of musical excellence as we proudly recognize her efforts with this award.

Beyond the stage and in the classroom, Sebastian has emerged as a vital leader in both the Jazz Band and Music Club, performing countless times both on and off campus for almost every occasion needing music. His dedication is unmatched, and his drive to learn and help others is incredible. If anyone was ever looking for Sebastian, he could almost certainly be found in a practice room, Bahnik Hall, or MS101, intensely focused on working out a piano line or composing a new piece. CHLOE FULLER To understand this year’s recipient of the Bliss Award in Music, one must grasp the true nature of harmony as not just the blending of individual notes, but as the powerful act of bringing people together. This year’s honoree has consistently demonstrated not only a profound commitment to the creative process but also a genuine appreciation for the craftsmanship and discipline required to grow as a musician, and this year, we are proud to recognize a senior who has spent her entire musical journey at Portledge doing exactly that. It is easy to talk the talk, but as President of the Portledge Music Club, she also walks the walk. She has been an integral part of every single assembly this year, quietly serving as a beacon of inspiration for younger musicians, even singing in Mandarin for the Lower School students last month. Not only is she a stand out performer on Portledge’s campus where she earned countless solos, she was also among a select handful of vocalists in the state of New York to perform in Rochester as part of the All State Vocal Jazz ensemble. Her work in the classroom was the same, where her landmark IB Music HL project, beautifully titled "Fuller in Harmony," was not only a testament to her immense hard work and dedication, but a celebration of community. For this project, she composed and performed her own set of original musical pieces, completely dazzling everyone lucky enough to secure a seat in Bahnik Hall on that snowy night in February. In her final Musical Showcase performance, she served as this year's closing act, leaving all of us in the audience with a powerful lyric that everyone here can, and should, carry with them every day. If you were at the Showcase performance this year, you heard her sing the powerful line : "I'm thankful for lovin' who I really am." For a legacy defined by leadership, community, and artistic brilliance, this year’s Bliss Award in Music is proudly presented to Chloe Fuller.

Visual Arts Department BLISS AWARD - VISUAL ARTS The Bliss Award is presented to the member of the graduating class who displays extraordinary commitment, enthusiasm for the creative process, and appreciation for the craftsmanship needed to excel in the Performing, Theatre, or Visual Arts.
MADELINE FULD This year's Bliss Award is a little more personal for me because I have witnessed this student's growth, artistically as well as personally, over their four years at Portledge. I struggled when trying to write this because normally I like to conceal the recipient's name till the end – you know, to build suspense. But it’s impossible to acknowledge this student’s accolades without exposing their identity. So here we go: She has, on more than one occasion, been recognized with a Portledge Visual Arts Book Award. She has been a consistent contributor to, as well as the cover artist for, the Portledge literature magazine The Blossom. For her Senior Project, she chose to create a beautiful sunset mural in an Upper School classroom for others to enjoy after she graduates. Her accomplishments outside of Portledge include years of intense dedication to her craft. In her junior year, she attended an Art Foundations class at Adelphi College and was subsequently asked to come back as a teacher's assistant. This year, she was asked to collaborate on a painting commemorating the poet Walt Whitman, which is now displayed at the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington. During the college application process, she was accepted to a multitude of art schools, including the prestigious California Institute of the Arts. In the end, she chose Ringling College in Florida to continue her pursuit of the Arts. It is truly my pleasure to be able to recognize Madeline Flud as the recipient of the 2026 Bliss Award in the Visual Arts.

DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR OF WORLD LANGUAGES & CULTURES: FRENCH VICTORIA MORMANDO Arriving at Portledge as a junior, Tori Mormando joined the IB cohort and therefore needed to start a new language-learning journey "from the beginning" — in the Ab Initio French class. Previously, she had studied Italian, to which she had a strong personal connection because it is the language of her ancestors. Giving this up to learn French at Portledge, this student distinguished herself with quiet determination, doing thorough and meticulous work in all areas of the course. Her intellectual curiosity was constantly on display: she asked insightful questions in class, sought connections between French and Italian, and employed creativity in her writing and speaking, always going above and beyond the assigned task. She revealed herself to be an effective storyteller, even with the limited vocabulary to which she had been exposed. Tori's positive attitude and desire to do well have allowed her to earn the highest marks in this course over both years of study. More importantly, her genuine interest in the cultural elements discovered through the languagelearning process means she is developing into an exemplary global citizen who is sensitive to and curious about the world around her. The language department congratulates her on her achievements, wishes best of luck as she continues her journey, and is proud to present this award to Tori Mormando.

The energy in the classroom is encouraging and inspiring to those around Chloe. What impressed her teacher, especially this year, was the initiative and courage of this student. In less than one month, she independently learned a Chinese song and performed it beautifully in front of native speakers. The performance was not only accurate and expressive, but it also reflected commitment, cultural appreciation, and genuine joy in language learning. Language learning is not only about vocabulary and grammar. It is about openness, resilience, and connection across cultures. Chloe outstandingly represents all of these qualities. Congratulations to our recipient of the Distinguished Achievement in Mandarin Study: Chloe Fuller.
