Dear Summer Adventures Parents and Friends, Welcome back to another super exciting year of Summer Adventures!

I am so grateful to have known many of you for so many years and look forward to meeting new families each year. At Summer Adventures, we strive to provide programs that will build upon your child’s interest and knowledge of a subject while generating a love for learning and the quest for greater understanding and developing problem-solving skills.

From early childhood years, where discovery and play are natural forms of learning, to older students working toward a greater understanding of the world around them, the beautiful 63-acre campus and buildings at Portledge provide an ideal environment for learning.

This summer, we will incorporate more nature and outdoor study in our early childhood programs, utilizing the Reggio Emilia approach that embraces the outdoors and specially outfitted classrooms as the “third teacher”.

Our most recent survey revealed the need for more in-depth learning in building, engineering, and woodworking classes, so we are offering options for more advanced work in those fields. Please read this brochure to learn more about Go Baby Go Car Building and what instructors like Luke Johnson, Jane Powel and Paul Ascolesce have planned for this summer.

Cooking classes are also being added as well as a fantastic new volleyball program taught by former professional Rese McNatt, and an enhanced golf program taught by Mike Zguris, the Women’s Varsity golf coach at LIU Post. The Theatre program will perform – and we are excited to add the Footlights program in August for our older thespians.

Four Open Houses are scheduled, each offering an opportunity to tour our wonderful facility, meet the teachers, and sample our activities.

What is an Add-On Option?

An Add-On program meets from 1 to 3 pm each day for one week. This option enables you to “add on” to a program that meets from 9 am to 1 pm, thus extending your child’s day and/or giving your child the opportunity to experience two Summer Adventures in one week. EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM

7 FULL WEEKS of fun, enrichment and play for your young child !

Early Childhood at Portledge Summer Adventures is a fun and dynamic program for children ages 2-6 years old with lunch and snack included.

Recognizing that each child brings an innate curiosity and sense of wonder to his or her learning, the Early Childhood program builds upon these organic learning processes to encourage collaborative learning.

We will continue with weekly themes that will engage your child in Reggio Emilia inspired classroom settings, while also adding new options to your child’s schedule. Each day, your child will continue to engage in indoor and outdoor play, as play is the most effective method for growth and learning at the early childhood age. Daily activities will also include water play, art, music, and yoga. We have added an interactive discovery zone to each classroom, where children may share interesting or beloved items they bring from home or from nature, providing a more personalized opportunity to explore and discover. Children will use their senses, touch these items and then document their discoveries and observations by drawing and writing. We look forward to seeing what everyone brings in to share and what children learn from their world and from what others have to share. And, of course, each week will wrap up with our Special Visitor.

We also look forward this summer to more early childhood ADD-ONS!!

Children love water, so we will offer two weeks of WATER PLAY ADD-ON. We will use the outdoors as our canvas and for inspiration as our OUTDOOR ART EXPLORERS ADD-ON, and use fine motor skills in our CLAY PLAY ADD-ON. Keep an eye out for these fun new classes to extend your child’s day at Summer Adventures.

Toddlers: Age 2

The Toddler Program is often a child’s first introduction to a formal play-group and a first opportunity to separate from mom and dad. Skilled teachers provide a great deal of love and support during this time of transition and first introduction to school. The Toddler Program offers a fun, low-key atmosphere where children feel totally comfortable and are able to express themselves while exploring their environment

through the senses of sight, sound, and touch. The Toddler Program offers two options for daily start time: 9 am and 11 am.

Toilet training is not necessary.

Children may attend two, three, or five days per week for up to seven weeks.

Nursery: Age 3

In the Nursery Program, children continue to learn through play, which encourages exploration and discovery. This Reggio Emilia inspired program exposes children to the wonders of nature while igniting their natural curiosity through self-guided learning.

Each day provides opportunities for active play in a fun, low-key atmosphere where children feel comfortable to express themselves through their senses of sight, sound, and touch. Skilled instructors watch over the children to ensure their safety and to gently guide them to make new friends and enjoy a wonderful time: an educational process that fosters intellectual development and social interaction.

Pre-Kindergarten: Age 4

In the Pre-Kindergarten Program, the focus remains on play, which is a four-year-old’s way of learning.

Here, children look forward to making new friends while they participate in music, art activities, and outdoor play. These fun activities serve to heighten a child’s awareness and appreciation for the surrounding world, paving the way to intellectual, emotional, and social development, which leads to greater self-confidence.

Kindergarten & First Grade: Ages 5-6 The K/1 program continues to build upon each child’s innate sense of wonder and discovery.

Shooting Stars Sports MultiSports is for children ages 4 to 7.

This program consists of various sports, including soccer, lacrosse, whiffle ball, kickball, basketball, and much more. This is an ideal program for any child who would like to learn to play different sports. All equipment is provided.

Gold Coast’s Mini Day Soccer Program introduces children ages 4-6 to the exciting world of soccer.

Each week, the children are engaged in a soccer adventure that focuses on the FUNdamentals of the game. The coaches have a wonderful way of interacting with children, keeping them entertained while delivering a highly effective training program.

All skills and concepts are taught through drills and team games, and participants progress rapidly as they see visible improvement with each mini-challenge presented by the coaches. All players get lots of touches on the ball and learn to make quick movements and sharp changes of direction while staying balanced and in control of the soccer ball. Every participant comes away a far better soccer player, learning valuable skills, getting plenty of exercise, and having tons of fun.

Tumbling For Tots

Boys and girls ages 4-7 improve their coordination, strength, and flexibility through exercise and tumbling skills. Children will also express their creativity with a variety of art projects.

ADD-ONS FOR LITTLE ONES

Mini Drama Add-On

Mini Drama is a weekly program that meets from 1-3 pm each day.

This is an abbreviated theatre option for those who cannot participate in the full Musical Theatre course. The program offers the opportunity to develop singing, dancing, and acting skills by performing in a short weekly performance. By participating in multiple sessions of Mini Drama, your child can qualify to perform in the summer production.

Spanish Stay Day Add-On

Join Ms. Monck-Rowley for a week of Spanish language learning, art projects, dance, culture, and more.

Stay Day Sampler Add-On

Join this special Add-On for one day per week for 3 weeks or come for the whole week. Each day children can enjoy a different activity from 1:15 -2:15, followed by fun on the playground. See our weekly newsletter for offerings!

Construction Class Add-On

This class will exercise large motor skills and creativity in your child by involvement in small indoor and outdoor building projects.

Campers will have an opportunity to use a variety of items collected throughout the school to have fun exploring and building. During this afternoon of climbing, hiding, rolling, and playing we will incorporate games such as hide and go seek, freeze tag, obstacle courses, etc. Come get busy building and creating!

Mini Day Baseball Add-On

Join the baseball program and Head Coach Marvin Rosario for an afternoon of baseball playing, skill-building and fun! Throwing, catching, hitting, and base running will all be a part of this afternoon.

Clay Play Add-On

Join us for an afternoon of clay building. We will make playdough and use various types of clay to make art projects as well as build and explore. Clay building is a wonderful way for young children to build fine motor skills that are required for growth and development while gaining interest in art, writing, and athletics.

Water Play Add-On

Join us for an afternoon of cooling down! Bring your suit and play in all kind of water activities. We will have free play running through sprinklers and playing in water tables. We will also have games such as a water balloon toss, building a water wall, playing with bubbles and baths. All kinds of water fun will take place during this fun week.

NEW Footlights Theatre Arts

Theatre Arts - Drama

Come sing, act and dance with us this summer with the Portledge Summer Theatre Troupe!

Fabulously performed past performances have included, Wizard of Oz, Annie, Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and Mary Poppins. Daily activities include: • Singing - learn the songs for the play and work with piano accompanist to perfect your pitch • Dancing - each day the actors work on dance and choreography for the show • Acting - script reading, skits and on stage acting •Set design- see the set come to life throughout the six weeks • Costume design Students who participate in this program learn to work together to achieve a common goal and in the process strengthen leadership and communication skills, establish greater self-confidence and have a lot of fun along the way.

Footlights at Portledge offers a week of intensive immersion for older theater students. Join us August 6-11 for performing arts classes and seminars headed by Broadway actress Courtney Balan, veteran of five Broadway shows including FINDING NEVERLAND and FALSETTOS. Classes range from musical theatre to straight acting taught by Courtney with special guest artists from the Broadway community. Classes include scene study, audition technique, book building, how to act a song, and the business of show business. In addition, choreography seminars will be taught by some of Broadway’s best dancers, recreating scenes from current Broadway shows, and culminating in a showcase at the end of the week. Footlights is an intensive program that gives you the actual feel of what it takes to be a professional actor.

Ballet

We will offer classic ballet taught

by Ms. Kathleen Moore, who ascribes to the Vaganova Syllabus, a form of Russian ballet. Kathleen has taught ballet for the past 15 years, most recently at the Russian Ballet School in Sea Cliff and at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York City. Courses range from Pre-Ballet through Ballet III and Pointe. All classes will meet from 3:30 pm to 5 pm.

Intensive Ballet

The Intensive Ballet classes are taught by Ms. Kathleen Moore, a renowned ballet instructor who also teaches our summer ballet class. This program is geared to students who have progressed to level III ballet or higher. The typical morning will consist of ballet barre, pointe class, centre class, variations class, and character class. Time is also provided to practice learned skills.

Students should bring soft shoes, pointe shoes, and character shoes.

NEW Awesome Drawing: Super Heroes, Cartooning, Graffiti Lettering and More

Join Portledge art teacher Pat Myers for this new class that has all the good stuff rolled into one!

Campers will get a chance to try their hand at classic cartoon characters, comic book super heroes, and graffiti lettering. We will work with colored pencils, markers, and watercolor paints to create bold original characters and designs.

NEW Dream House Build

Come and exercise your creativity as we build a small model of your dream room. Students will learn how to space plan and create their very own space just like an interior designer would.

Throughout the week we will use various mediums to construct our dream rooms, learn how to draft simple floor plans, and assemble

presentation boards. Each day we will learn how to hand make mini furniture pieces, sometimes out of recycled materials. We ask that students bring an empty shoe box with them on the first day.

iMovie... Lights, Camera, Action!

The ability to develop valuable online video content has become a dynamic career path in today’s technology-focused economy.

This course provides students with a unique opportunity to create professional videos complete with special effects and seamless editing. Through detailed instruction, students learn basic techniques of film direction, videography, and editing.

ART Miss the Madd Potter?

Join us this summer at Portledge Summer Adventures for four weeks with Madd Potter. Julie’s team is back with programs that feature a different theme each week.

Students will be grouped by age and will have the opportunity to paint on canvas, paint pottery, and create personal masterpieces in all sorts of artistic ways, as well as explore the Potter’s Wheel!

˘ Potter’s Wheel

Get ready to have a blast! Feel the clay through your fingers as it spins on the wheel. Clay is a wonderful, tactile medium that many kids have never experienced before. Kids will have plenty of “wheel time” to learn and practice centering, pulling basic forms, and trimming their pots. They will also learn carving and decorating techniques and about glaze.

Campers will be grouped by age and ability, and may learn at their own pace. Three of their best pieces will be chosen to fire in the kiln.

Me, My Selfie & I

It’s all about you this week!

Campers will enjoy creating an assortment of art projects that are inspired by themselves! Paint a self portrait, learn the art of mosaics to create your own “one-of-a-kind” mirror, design and Pottery Painting - paint your very own ceramic snack set and paint your very own canvas string bag.

Beach Party Luau Add-On

What would be more exciting than creating all of the pieces needed for your next lemonade stand? Campers will glaze a large ceramic lemonade tray, design and paint four 9 oz. clear plastic cups with a matching 68 oz. pitcher.

Campers will also paint linen napkins in a lemon theme and decorate their cash box.

Aloha Summer! Campers will enjoy painting a colorful assortment of art and pottery this week. Projects include a ceramic surfboard plate, a Hawaiian pig piggy bank, a tropical beach inspired canvas painting, a painted beach tote, and a ceramic Hawaiian beach mug.

Shark Week!

Add-On

Mini Drama is a weekly program that meets from 1-3 pm each day.

This abbreviated theatre option is ideal for those who cannot participate in the full musical theatre course. The program offers the opportunity to develop singing, dancing, and acting skills by performing in a short weekly performance. By participating in multiple sessions of Mini Drama throughout the summer, your child can qualify to perform in the summer production.

In this class, students will explore the dance styles of jazz and hip-hop. Using current music, we will explore jazz dancing through the basics of kicks, turns, leaps, and energetic movements. Outdoor Art and Nature Building Add-On

In this program we will use the environment as our art studio and the third teacher. This is a part of the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning to use the outdoors to inspire. In this class we will set up a variety of art canvases to create on. We will use varied media with which to paint and create, on varied canvases, we will make nature rubbings, collect from nature to create and build sculptures. This class will give your child the opportunity to grow, explore, and experiment in art.

Construction Class Add-On

This class will exercise large motor skills and creativity in your child by involvement in small indoor and outdoor building projects.

Campers will have an opportunity to use a variety of items collected throughout the school to have fun exploring and building. During this afternoon of climbing, hiding, rolling, and playing we will incorporate games such as hide and go seek, freeze tag, obstacle courses, etc. Come get busy building and creating!

Join Mrs. Earley for The Slime Lab! Art and science will come together in this fun new class that is a very hot trend right now. In this class, children will enjoy creating different types of Slime.

Design and Build Gardens Add-On

In this class, students will meet each day to design and build a garden in a specially designated area on the playground. We will begin by expressing and brainstorming ideas on paper, then use blocks and sand to envision how a garden would look. While learning and building the garden here at summer adventures, students will also make a miniature version to take home. We will discover the many things that grow and how gardens are beautiful to construct and then enjoy.

This summer, students will learn to sew and make projects with the machine and by hand. Projects will include, pillows, handbags, and much more. Savory, Sweet and Smart Cooking with Suzie

Cake, Bake, & Decorate This week-long class covers a broad range of cupcake making and cake decorating skills.

Children learn how to make assorted flavors of buttercream and iced cupcakes with professional piping tips of all shapes and sizes.

All of the cakes and cupcakes will be baked before class. The students will get a chance to learn how to stack and ice their own layer cakes (just like the pros), covering them in fondant. With television shows dedicated to cake and cupcake making becoming so popular, there is growing interest in this edible form of art.

Project Runway Doll Edition

Come and learn how to scale and pattern outfits for you and for your doll. This class will involve machine and hand sewing, hand stitching, and creative design to each individual’s ideas and fashion sense. Students will use magazines and advertising to inspire ideas on how to dress their doll. A fun-filled fashion show will be a part of this week-long program.

This week-long cooking class enables kids to learn how to make and prepare fun foods and snacks that they can make at home.

Projects vary from homemade granola bars and smoothies to quesadillas, mac & cheese, and pretzels for lunch. Students will learn about the major food groups and healthy eating, while adding a nice balance of sweet and savory cupcakes and cookies to finish up the week. This camp offers a fun way to add fruits and vegetables into any child’s diet and help them learn hands-on skills in a comfortable setting.

Build Your Own Computer

Your child has the unique opportunity to learn computers inside and out under the direction of Eric Johnson, who teaches Technology and Physics at Portledge. Students will take apart and reassemble computers, build and upgrade computers, and install video, RAM, networking, and sound cards, install the latest Windows operating system along with anti-virus software, then learn how to remove viruses and spyware.

Space and Rocketry

Gravity is a force to be reckoned with in space and rocketry camp.

What is the best way to escape it?

Build rockets powered by air, water, solid fuel, baking soda, and dry ice. Try to land on a “planet”.

Figure out how to plan for your rocket’s safe return to Earth. Learn about the history of rockets, and the science behind the colors in the 4th of July sky. Fly a drone over the launch pad to capture spectacular photos. Discover how satellites and GPS work. Design toys that will work in microgravity on the International Space Station. Just stay away from the event horizon of the black hole…

The tricks of the trade of being a successful spy will take several days to master. But we will need to test your skills on a challenging mystery before the week’s end.

Investigate how changes in technology have changed the lives of both those doing the spying as well as the ones being spied upon. Fascinating!

˘ NEW Go Baby Go Car Building

Come and customize a super wheely car for a child with special needs. Students will learn the principles of car building, engine parts, batteries, circuits, and wiring. They will then apply these principles to outfit a super wheely car designed for a special needs child. The car will be specially designed to help its owner overcome challenges, build strengths, and support their physical development. This class will be taught by veteran physics teacher and computer expert Eric Johnson, and will culminate with the students getting to meet the special needs child for whom the car is custom designed.

NEW Marbles, Mazes, Ramps, Roller-Coasters & More

In this class we will manipulate the forces of gravity, acceleration and motion in ways that Sir Isaac Newton never imagined. For example, we will use a larger-thanlife-sized marble ramp to see how marbles travel, build our own marble roller coaster, pinball machine, or marble maze. Each participant will take home their personalized marble maze or pinball machine.

SCIENSATIONAL WORKSHOPS This summer, Portledge Summer Adventures is excited to introduce hands-on Sciensational Workshops for slightly older children. We will offer two different classes per week for the weeks of June 25-29, July 9-13, and July 30-Aug 3. Class times will be from 9 am-12 pm and from 1 pm-4 pm.

Lunch will be offered to those who decide to participate in a “double header” or “Add-On” another program to create a full day of activities.

˘ Make It & Take It Home Science Projects

This hands-on program will allow your child to discover just how amazing science can be. Children will make and take home a wide assortment of hands-on toys designed to teach basic science concepts. Grow and take home a crystal tree. Make an energy bead bracelet and watch as those amazing beads turn from white to a rainbow of colors before your eyes. Build a working electric motor. Make a sharpie pen T-shirt and learn some cool chemistry (student supplies a 100% cotton T-shirt). Make bubbling blobs and explore the properties of a density tube. Make silly putty, glowing goo, green flubber, and other cool projects. By the way...we will make ice cream in our own amazing, different, Sciensational way!

White Light Lasers Galaxies

Children explore science as a process of investigation that is fun and exciting. Each day, the class will conduct experiments, discover the amazing, and test their ideas in the real world.

Students will learn about LASERS, including a laser light show with dancing, swirling, and pulsating laser light that flashes to music. We will also conduct fun experiments with laser pointers, lenses and mirrors. Students will build and take home their own

kaleidoscope, spectroscope, periscope, and constellation watcher. The class will also watch the constellations and learn about all the planets and solar system as they take a 3-D adventure into outer space! This workshop will be a truly De-Light-ful hands-on experience!

Amazing 4-in-1 Robot

Build your own interchangeable robot to take home with four unique modes. This 4-in-1 robot allows students to build the Cricket, a joy on six legs; and the Beast, a master of bi-pedal movement. You better not get in its way! This amazing structure will also transform into the Trailer, a little engine that could move forward thanks to its motorized transmission. And best of all, it becomes Grandpa-Bot Robot, which has huge eyes and is everyone’s favorite bobble-headed, gear-driven family member.

Students gain confidence, self esteem, and celebrate as they are the architect that built the machine that transforms between four modes. Campers also have fun building a wide range of additional robotic designs with the Robotic Building System, including Sumo wrestling matches, races, and more. ˘ This class will explore the principles of chemistry and more! We will learn to make batteries from fruits or potatoes, and make a fantastic crystal tree. Students will tinker with invisible ink, see the happy and sad balls, work with powerful magnets, and look at prepared slides using microscopes.

Campers also explore different types of natural materials from our interesting rock and mineral collection. Your child will become a chemical detective, making glob from glue, using paper chromatography to separate colors, make dirty pennies turn clean and clean pennies turn green. Hands-on science is the best way to learn, and this class offers all types of exciting opportunities to learn and to explore.

Do you dig Dinosaurs, Archaeology and Paleontology? This workshop will make those words come alive. Each child will partake in a simulated fossil excavation, uncovering the different bones of a dinosaur. Each child will then assemble the bones to form a completed 3-dimensional dinosaur to be taken home.

We will bring the excavation tools, labels, and specimen bags and use our geological time and fossil charts to make a plaster fossil replica of an ammonite, Tyrannosaurus rex tooth or choose from other molds. With a focus on hands-on learning, students will experiment with and take home their own Electronic Lab Kit. They will also learn what happens when you place batteries in series, how resistors and capacitors perform, and so much more. Chess Challenge and Strategic Thinking

Your child is invited to join senior chess master, Portledge chess coach, and science teacher Roger LaFlair for a mind-testing chess challenge! Participants will be grouped by age and skill level for lessons that focus on various aspects of chess strategy, tactics, and end game play. Participants will compete in chess tournaments and their improvement will be recognized at a final awards ceremony. Students will also spend time engaging in other mentally challenging games that build strategic thinking skills.

Gaming Skills

Gaming Skills is a camp where kids learn and develop hand-eye coordination while playing games!

Gamers will learn about different types of games and the strategies to beat them and succeed. They will develop both mentality and skills to defeat all types of gaming challenges. The course also puts a strong emphasis about how gamers can learn from what games they are playing while tackling simulation and educational games.

Along with learning a history about gaming, gamers will also make their own video game!

Introduction to Coding and More...

Video Game Programming

The Video Game Programming camp offers kids a fun way to learn about programming, logic and computers while designing their very own video game! The programmers will use a software language called Scratch developed

by MIT for teaching kids the very basics of programming in a fun and easy way accessible to nearly every one. The programmers will learn about a variety topics from animation, variables, operators, drawing, sound production and more in creating their video game.

Their finished products will be available online for download on the scratch website.

This coding class prepares and teaches students the fundamentals of coding in fun ways! Pokémon Camp Add-On

Let’s Play

This camp teaches the campers how to record, edit and upload the games they play on YouTube.

Campers create their very own Let’s Play experiences to share with their friends: a popular new form of media that allows others to watch people playing video games. Campers will learn all about the technology required to upload videos, including advanced tips and tricks for doing so. They will also learn how to make their own website and YouTube channel to share their video gaming experiences with their friends, while learning about cybersafety and security.

Lacrosse Academy

Max Lax is a co-educational sports camp that focuses on introducing children to the sport of lacrosse, as well as other cooperative games. Your child will learn the basic skills of lacrosse and participate in different games, which will help with the development of those skills while also having fun. At camp, your child will also play different team building and cooperative games such as capture the flag, water balloon team tag, lacrosse baseball, dodge ball, and European handball. The campers will also have the opportunity to cool off from the summer sun on the camp favorite: Max Lax Mega Slip n’ Slide. At Max Lax we aim to teach children the basics of lacrosse while emphasizing teamwork, fair play, exercise, and most importantly having fun. We hope to see your child this summer.

Students will learn the fundamentals of golf at our on-campus golf facility. Join Mike Zguris, golf coach at LIU Post for a week-long golf clinic. He will be covering all areas of the game of golf, including the full swing, short game, course management, rules and etiquette. NEW Coast to Coast Volleyball Clinic

We are very excited to welcome Coast to Coast Volleyball taught

by Rese McNatt, a former pro volleyball player. and native of Southern California. Rese attended Rosary Academy in Fullerton, CA and played as an outside hitter for the legendary volleyball club ICHIBAN VBC in Long Beach, CA. She received a full scholarship to Missouri State University where she played right side and was team captain her senior season. At MSU, Rese was a two-time First Team All-MVC selection. Upon graduating college in 2002, she played volleyball professionally for a decade across Europe and Asia. Rese helped her team win the United Arab Emirates League Championship, MEVZA CUP Championship, and was named MVP of the Slovenian Cup. In Spain, she was the top point scorer in the SuperLiga for two consecutive seasons. She has coached All-American Volleyball camps & clinics throughout the USA during the off-season for the past six years.

Crew: The Ultimate Water Sport

Oyster Bay Community Rowing is offering a Youth Learn to Row as an introductory, coed, non-competitive program offering youth a chance to try the sport of rowing on the scenic waters of Oyster Bay. Participants are introduced to the basics of the sport in a fun, engaging, safe environment.

Rowers are introduced to the basics of the sport, learning rowing terminology, how to handle the equipment, and the elements of proper rowing technique. Also covered is boat safety and the concepts of physical well-being, including hydration, core strength, flexibility, and nutrition. Learn to Row also uses rowing machines so that rowers can get a sense of the rowing stroke in a stable environment. By the end of the class, rowers will row in eight-person training shells.

Basketball Academy

The Portledge Basketball Academy allows players of all ability levels to learn and refine their skills in every aspect of the game, providing the tools they need to compete at their best.

The coaching staff is dedicated to teaching skill development, proper technique, and overall court awareness, preparing players to be in top form for season play.

Areas of focus include instruction in the fundamentals of shooting, dribbling, passing, court awareness on offensive and defense, communications, group dynamics, and leadership both on and off the court. In addition, we will focus on footwork drills, moving with and without the ball, developing specific skills for ball handling, post moves, rebounding, and fast breaks. We will also engage players in one-on-one, two-on-two, three-on-three, and full court contests and games.

The Portledge Basketball Academy is also dedicated to increasing opportunities for young people through basketball clinics.

Portledge Summer Adventures is excited to host the premier staff from Gold Coast Soccer for two weeks of fun learning. These coaches are specially trained to gauge each child’s abilities in order to determine the teaching plan that best suits their individualized needs. They work closely with each camper to develop self-confidence and a positive attitude, both on and off the field.

This program is geared toward improving your child’s skills and abilities with or without the ball, while fostering a love for the game. Each week, the program focuses on a different facet of the game, so signing up for both weeks will provide maximum benefit. Coach Rosario is back for another summer at Portledge. He is a SUNY Old Westbury graduate where he played baseball for four years and graduated with a BS in Education. Coach Rosario went on to teach and coach at Portledge and at Storm Baseball Academy. This program will be customized for beginners and experienced ball players ages 6-12 years old. Baseball players will be challenged, encouraged, and instructed. The day will start with skills, drills, and fun. Running, hitting, catching, throwing and an understanding and love of the game will all be a part of this program. Robbie Wagner Tennis Instruction

Tennis Instruction is a summer experience filled with tennis, fun, and fitness. Tennis training combines true athletic training with the development of a positive mental attitude. Lessons are adapted to all skill levels and teach the fundamentals of tennis, including: forehand, backhand, serve, return of serve and volley, development of competitive drive, strategic match play, and mental toughness. Participants will be grouped according to ability level, and their typical day includes lunch and Dartfish video analysis.

The Hunter’s Grove Equestrian Center offers a well-rounded experience, complete with riding, grooming, and caring for horses.

SUMMER ACADEMIC INSTITUTE

Geometry I Prerequisites: Algebra I. This course is equivalent to a full-year Geometry course and the workload is intensive. Topics covered include logic, triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, inequalities, similarities, right triangle trig, constructions, surface area and volume, analytical geometry, and transformations. Portledge students can take this course for credit by passing a final exam, but this does not exempt them from having to take four years of mathematics at Portledge. This course can also be taken for non-credit to strengthen skills in preparation for the next school year. Students not attending Portledge can also take this course for credit if their school permits it.

Summer Reading Instruction Have your child get a jump start on summer reading assignments and maintain skills learned throughout the year. This hourly option is a great way to keep your child’s skills sharp throughout the summer. Our learning specialist, Kristy Samulduski, has been teaching for sixteen years in grades Pre-K through 12th. She has a Master’s Degree in Literacy and was recently a model teacher in the NYC public school system.

She will provide communication and written feedback about your child’s reading progress and help with summer book projects. We will pay attention to the successes gained, the areas that we found challenging, and we will look ahead to what your child can achieve the following year.

Sessions are scheduled individually throughout the mornings from Monday through Friday.

Middle School Prep Study Skills “Keys to Success”

Give your student the edge he/she needs; this class is for upcoming 6, 7, & 8th graders who want to develop the skills necessary for managing a middle school workload. Students will improve their learning and begin middle school on the right path. The course will cover time management, organization, planning, note taking skills, reading comprehension, study skills, and the importance of having a growth mindset. The week will conclude with a school planner craft. Instructor Elaina Schroeder holds a M.S.in Mental Health Counseling and is the middle school learning specialist and counselor at Portledge School. Prior to joining the team at Portledge, Mrs. Schroeder was a K-8 and high school counselor and learning specialist for nine years in Denver, CO. She specializes in academic coaching and teaching executive functioning skills, helping children understand who they are as a students and learn what skills work best for them.

Our Staff

The staff at Portledge Summer Adventures is made up of warm, caring professionals who take an interest in your child’s success and fun each day. The Directors and Head Teachers are certified teachers and coaches. Assistants are carefully supervised students and athletes who are interested in working with your child.

Lunch Program

Lunch is provided for all children enrolled in early childhood programs and full days. Lunches consist of individually prepared sandwiches, bagels, yogurt, snack, fruit, juice or water. A bag lunch must be sent with all children enrolled in half-day programs.

Snacks are also provided throughout the day. Please note, we are a peanut-free environment.

Medical Information A completed medical form as well as a copy of your child’s immunization records must be on file prior to the start of any program.

Permission is granted by signature on the registration form for your child to engage in all program activities except as noted on your child’s health form. A medical form will be mailed with your registration confirmation.
