SUMMER˘ ADVENTURES

Dear Parents, Nature vs Nurture? I have been pondering the effects of nature on our children for a while now. Spending significant amounts of time outdoors is critical to a child’s growth and development, and encourages greater environmental awareness. As the Director of Summer Adventures, I am continually amazed by the sense of wonder and love of nature shared by the children who attend Summer Adventures, which drives my team and me to keep that engagement fresh and new. In our Early Childhood Program we continually engage with the outdoors through play and art and discovery. This summer we will make greater use of Coffin Wood, the nature preserve adjacent to the Portledge campus. Our programs will enable children of all ages to explore the trails that run through this area of unspoiled beauty. Students will have the opportunity to engage with nature by investigating plants, animals, birds, trees and trails, one with our new environmentalist and the other with our biology teacher.

We have an entirely new science curriculum to keep our returning friends enthused about topics of interest. Join physics and computer whiz Eric Johnson for classes in space and rocketry, robotics, Sea Perch robot building, and more. New to our science staff, but not new to Summer Adventures is Ms. Donna Salladino who is teaching all things STEM. Ms. Salladino has a master’s degree in STEM and teaches 3rd grade, so she knows what kids love, they love to build and create and that is what they will do in the five week long opportunities with Ms. Salladino.

Computers and Coding classes are also all new and meet the needs of a variety of ages and abilities. And don’t miss out on our new veterinarian programs!

On the sports front, we are excited to have Heat Elite basketball join us to bring a more intensive experience to Portledge Summer Adventures. In addition, the Baseball Academy is planning a trip to a Mets game this year!

What is an Add-On Option?

An Add-On program meets from 1 to 3 pm each day for one week. This option enables you to “add on” to a program that meets from 9 am to 1 pm, thus extending your child’s day and/ or giving your child the opportunity to experience two Summer Adventures in one week. 7 FULL WEEKS of fun, enrichment, and play for your young child!

E

arly Childhood at Portledge Summer Adventures is a fun and dynamic program for children ages 2-6 years old with lunch and snack included. Recognizing that each child brings an innate curiosity and sense of wonder to his or her learning, the Early Childhood program builds upon these organic learning processes to encourage collaborative learning. We will continue with weekly themes that will engage your child in Reggio Emilia inspired classroom settings, while also adding new options to your child’s schedule. Each day, your child will engage in indoor and outdoor play, which is the most effective method for promoting growth and learning during early childhood. Daily activities include water play, art, music, and yoga. This summer, each classroom will also be equipped with a sensory bin that builds upon the theme of the week. Children can bring in items from home for others to investigate. New this summer, COOKING will be added to our weekly activities. And, of course, each week will wrap up with our Special Visitor.

Many children enjoy spending the entire day at Summer Adventures. To meet the needs of these children and their families, we offer ADD-ONS! An Add-On is a program that meets from 1-3 pm each day to extend your child’s day. We have designed Add-Ons specifically for early childhood, including Water Play, Cooking, Arts & Crafts, Dress Up & Drama, Tumbling, and more! These early childhood Add-Ons offer a convenient way to enhance your child’s experience by exploring a variety of enrichment activities while extending their day.

Toddlers: Age 2

The Toddler Program is often a child’s first introduction to a formal play-group and a first opportunity to separate from mom and dad. Skilled teachers provide a great deal of love and support during this time of transition and first introduction to school.

The Toddler Program offers a fun, low-key atmosphere where children feel totally comfortable and are able to express themselves while exploring their environment through the senses of sight, sound, and touch. The Toddler Program offers two options for daily start time: 9 am and 11 am. Toilet training is not necessary. Children may attend two, three, or five days per week for up to seven weeks.

In the Nursery Program, children continue to learn through play, which encourages exploration and discovery. This Reggio Emilia inspired program exposes children to the wonders of nature while igniting their natural curiosity through self-guided learning. Each day provides opportunities for active play in a fun, low-key atmosphere where children feel comfortable to express themselves through their senses of sight, sound, and touch. Skilled instructors watch over the children to ensure their safety and to gently guide them to make new friends and enjoy a wonderful time. This educational process fosters intellectual development and social interaction.

In the Pre-Kindergarten Program, the focus remains on play, which is a four-year-old’s way of learning. Here, children look forward to making new friends while they participate in music, art activities, and outdoor play. These fun activities serve to heighten a child’s awareness and appreciation for the surrounding world, paving the way for intellectual, emotional, and social development, which leads to greater self-confidence.

Kindergarten & First Grade: Ages 5-6

The K/1 program continues to build upon each child’s innate sense of wonder and discovery.

PROGRAMS FOR LITTLE ONES Shooting Stars Sports Multi-Sport Program

Shooting Stars Sports Multi-Sports is for children ages 4-7. This program consists of various sports, including soccer, lacrosse, whiffle ball, kickball, basketball, and much more. This is an ideal program for any child who would like to learn to play different sports. All equipment is provided.

Gold Coast Mini Day Soccer Program

Gold Coast’s Mini Day Soccer Program introduces children ages 4-6 to the exciting world of soccer. Each week, the children are engaged in a soccer adventure that focuses on the FUNdamentals of the game. The coaches have a wonderful way of interacting with children, keeping them entertained while delivering a highly effective training program. All skills and concepts are taught through drills and team games, and participants progress rapidly as they see visible improvement with each mini-challenge presented by the coaches. All players get lots of touches on the ball and learn to make quick movements and sharp changes of direction while staying balanced and in control of the soccer ball. Every participant comes away a far better soccer player, learning valuable skills, getting plenty of exercise, and having tons of fun.

This mini drama program meets weekly from 1-3 pm each day. It is an abbreviated theater option for those who cannot participate in the full Mary Poppins program, but love to dress up and to act! Students will have fun dressing up or preparing to perform a story or play. By attending multiple weeks of mini drama, students can perform in Mary Poppins.

Add-On Dates: weekly from June 24 - July 26 Ages: 4 and up Time: 1 - 3 pm Add-On Course Fee: $215/week Using the environment as our art studio, this class is a part of the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching and learning that utilizes the outdoors as a source of inspiration. A variety of art canvases and media are used to paint and create nature rubbings and sculptures.

Mini Day Baseball Add-On

Join head coach Marvin Rosario for an afternoon of baseball, skill-building, and fun!

Skills practiced include throwing, catching, hitting, and base running.

Clay Play Add-On

Clay Play camp is a great way for kids to unwind and endlessly create. We will exercise fine motor skills as we work with both non-drying and drying clay projects.

Join us for an afternoon of cooling down!

Bring your swim suit and play all kinds of water activities. We will have free play running through sprinklers and with water tables. We will also have games such as a water balloon toss, building a water wall, and playing with bubbles and baths.

Boys and girls ages 4-7 improve their coordination, strength, and flexibility through exercise and tumbling skills.

Sing Dance and Habla Español!

Children will develop basic communication skills and learn Spanish phrases through song, dance, puppetry, and crafts. Students will be introduced to thematic units such as weather, family foods, and home. Cultural snacks and stories will be shared daily.

THE ARTS

˘ Theatre Arts - Drama (6 weeks)

Join us in the production of Mary Poppins! This summer we will offer a flexible schedule to accommodate families, starting with two weeks in our Creative Theatre Arts program to warm up. In this class students will write their own scripts and perform on stage leading up to the production of Mary Poppins during the remaining four weeks.

Daily activities include: • Singing - learn the songs for the play and work with piano accompanist to perfect your pitch • Dancing - each day the actors work on dance and choreography for the show • Acting - script reading, skits, and on stage acting • Set design - see the set come to life throughout the six weeks • Costume design - participants get to design and make colorful costumes Students who participate in this program learn to work together to achieve a common goal and in the process strengthen leadership and communication skills, establish greater self-confidence and have a lot of fun along the way.

Creative Theatre Arts (2 weeks)

This new program will be a spin off from our popular drama program. Students will have the opportunity to act and to be creative as they write and perform their own skits and bring their individual talents to the stage. The two-week class will culminate in a student-run variety performance. Students may continue to attend for four more weeks to be involved in the production of Mary Poppins, where they will continue to act, sing, dance, choreograph, help with sets, costuming, and make up.

Creative Movement and Dance

Join Miss Angela Tornese for a fun new class that moves and shakes. Miss Angela has taught dance and creative movement in Huntington and Northport for the past 15 years. This class will focus on creative movement, improvisation, and dance moves.

Ballet

We will offer classic ballet taught by Ms. Kathleen Moore, who ascribes to the Vaganova Syllabus, a form of Russian ballet.

Kathleen has taught ballet for the past 15 years, most recently at the Russian Ballet School in Sea Cliff and at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York City.

Courses range from Pre-Ballet through Ballet III and Pointe. All classes will meet from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Footlights Theatre Arts

Footlights Theatre Arts is bringing intensive immersion to Portledge Summer Adventures.

Join us from August 5 - 9 for a week of daily performing arts classes and seminars led by Broadway actress Courtney Balan, veteran of six Broadway shows. Classes range from musical theatre to acting taught by Courtney with special guest artists from the Broadway community. Also included: scene study, audition technique and book building, how to act a song, the business of show business, as well as a seminar focused on Broadway choreography taught by a cast member of a current Broadway show. Culminating in a showcase at the end of the week, Footlights Theatre Arts will enable your child to experience life as a professional actor.

Intensive Ballet

The Intensive Ballet classes are taught by Ms. Kathleen Moore, a renowned ballet instructor. This program is geared to students who have progressed to level III ballet or higher. The typical morning will consist of ballet barre, pointe class, centre class, variations class, and character class. Time is also provided to practice learned skills.

Students should bring soft shoes, pointe shoes, and character shoes.

˘ Dream Room Build Camp

This exciting and highly creative class allows campers to design and create a miniaturized model of the room they’ve always wanted. Participants will use methods and techniques similar to those used by a professional interior designer. Starting with a basic floor plan, campers will map out furniture, learn spacial planning techniques, and then apply color theory to their interior designs. As the week progresses, students will hand build miniaturized furniture using a mix of recycled materials and new fabrics to complete their dream room.

iMovie... Lights, Camera, Action!

The ability to develop valuable online video content has become a dynamic career path in today’s technology-focused economy. This course provides students with a unique opportunity to create professional videos complete with special effects and seamless editing. Through detailed instruction, students learn basic techniques of film direction, videography, and editing.

NEW Selfie Surreal Surroundings

This summer, Portledge is doing a unique spin on the popular Instagram interactive art exhibitions that are popping up throughout NYC. In Selfie Surreal Surroundings, students will be split into small teams that work to transform a classroom into their own interactive exhibition, complete with handmade props that are based on a specific theme. At the end of the week, the teams get to review each other’s work and take selfies with the various art exhibitions. Get ready for some surreal creativity!

American Girl Bakery & Coffee Shop

This fun-filled camp combines many different mediums of art such as canvas, textile painting, and creating pottery with polymer clay. Campers will be painting doll-sized pottery such as a coffee pot with cups and plates. They will also learn how to use and bake polymer clay to create colorful mini donuts and cakes.

Our coffee shop wouldn’t be complete without a painted doll-sized tablecloth, napkins, and wall art. Your child can bring an American Girl doll in for the week to interact with the art.

Sculpture: Make It 3D!

Do you love to create 3D sculpture with your hands? Using a variety of materials and techniques, campers will explore the processes of making 3D sculpture while learning about famous artists Jeff Koons and Alexander Calder. Amazing sculptures will be constructed from materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric, plaster, and wood. Projects may include a soft sculpture, a self portrait, a cityscape, and more. This class will give your child a chance to view 3D sculpture in a whole new light.

Julie and the Madd Potter Team will join us this summer for intensive art programming for boys and girls of all ages.

This summer, campers will design their own doll house, then sew new ideas on the sewing machine, including phone cases, Monster dolls, pillows, and more.

Campers will learn about famous artists and explore art history while creating AMAZING art projects, including POP ART pillows and mosaics like those found throughout the ages.

THE ARTS FOR ALL AGES

Magnificent Mosaics

Learn the history of glass mosaics from the earliest examples to the more recent mosaics found throughout the NYC subway system. Campers will create a large 23"x19” wooden mirror mosaic by creating colorful patterns in the glass. Grout and paint will add a finishing touch to each one-of-a-kind masterpiece!

This summer, Potters Wheel expands the experience into a full ceramics course: teaching campers to throw small pots and construct with clay, followed by a week of painting and glazing.

Learn the history of Pop Art while creating SUPER-SIZED sewing projects inspired by artist Claes Oldenburg. Beginner and experienced sewers are welcome. Campers will be given complete instruction starting with machine familiarity, pattern construction, and hand sewing. Boys and girls will choose from a variety of fabrics to complete their unconventional and oversized soft sewn pieces. Projects may include a giant pencil, a large cookie, an XL pizza slice, 10 piece chicken nuggets, or even an enormous fried egg pillow. Join us for a week of drawing and painting in some very unconventional ways. Feel like Michelangelo as you draw upside down, paint with unusual objects like twigs, feathers, and feet... yes, I said feet! Campers will explore the beautiful Portledge campus to find inspiration for their plein air painting and also practice still life drawing in our art classroom. Mediums include pencil, acrylic, watercolors, and pastels.

Doll House Camp

Boys and girls, use your imagination to create the house of your dreams. Will you create a firehouse, clubhouse, or doll house? Paint and build miniature furniture and accessories for your wooden playhouse. Ceramics (Part 1) - Potter’s Wheel & Clay Building

This is Part 1 of a 2-Part camp. This week begins with exercises designed to develop skills as a potter and covers all the basics of working with ceramics. Campers will learn how to “throw” small pots on the potter’s wheel and build clay pieces using techniques such as the pinch, coil, and slab construction. This session consists of wheel demonstrations and hands-on experience. Surface decorating techniques will also be learned and applied to all ceramic pieces.

Sample projects may include, but are not limited to, small pots, hand built tiles, vessels, wind chimes, jewelry holders, decorative boxes, plaques, and containers. Finished projects will be fired and ready to glaze in our Paint & Glaze Pottery camp, which is held the following week.

During this second week, campers get to paint and glaze an assortment of pottery projects completed in Ceramics (Part 1). We will explore these questions wile teaching hands-on techniques to apply when firing pottery, such as stenciling, taping, dotting and sgraffito. *Pre-fired pottery will be available to campers who were unable to attend Ceramics (Part 1).

˘ Meal Makers - An Adventure in Cooking

Do you like to cook and enjoy TV shows like Chopped or Top Chef? This class will show you how they combine all of those ingredients into a fabulous meal! Come and learn the skills needed to prepare delicious appetizers, entrees, and desserts. During this fun-filled week, the class will focus on a different style of cuisine each day, and campers will get to take home the meals they create to share with family and friends. In the process, they learn about new ingredients, culinary terms, tools and equipment use, and menu re-portioning conversions. This full day, week-long camp offers a fun and delicious way to learn the basics required to become a fabulous cook and baker.

Cake, Bake, Decorate and MORE!

This week-long class covers a broad range of fundamental baking skills, including dough, quick breads, pies, cakes, cookies, tarts, and of course, cupcake making and cake decorating. Participants get to stack and ice their own layer cakes (just like the pros), covering them in fondant, and make assorted flavors of butter cream to ice their cupcakes using professional piping tips of all shapes and sizes. Each day, the campers get to take home their edible art creations to share with family and friends. Join us for a week of yummy fun!

THE ARTS ADD-ONS This mini drama program meets weekly from 1-3 pm each day. It is an abbreviated theater option for those who cannot participate in the full Mary Poppins production, but love to dress up and enjoy acting! Each week, campers will be given time to have fun dressing up or working on costuming while preparing to perform a familiar story or play.

Improvised acting and fun are a big part of this program! Students have the opportunity to develop singing and acting skills while having fun improvising. At the end of the week, participants get to act in a short performance in full costume. This program is also a terrific option for those who need to schedule a shorter day. By attending multiple weeks of Drama add-on, your child can qualify to perform in the production of Mary Poppins.

Unicorns, Rainbows & Art Add-On

If you love unicorns and all things that sparkle, this is your week! Learn about these mythical creatures while creating art projects that include unicorn canvas painting, glitter galaxy slime, painted unicorn string bags, and a unicorn headband ring toss game.

Campers also get to color and apply fondant to decorate yummy unicorn cupcakes.

Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop Add-On

Join Miss Angela Tornese for a tap class with jazz and hip hop music in this fun add-on.

For the past 15 years, Miss Angela has taught dance and creative movement in Huntington and Northport. Students learn new tap skills or improve upon those they already possess.

To culminate the week, basic elements of tap and both types of music will be integrated into a choreographed short program.

Outdoor Art and Nature Building Add-On

In this program we use the environment as our art studio and as a third teacher. This is integral to the Reggio Emilia approach to learning, which utilizes the outdoors to teach and to inspire young minds. In this class, we set up a variety of art canvases, using varied media to paint and create. These varied canvases allow campers to make nature rubbings. They also collect twigs and other environmental specimens to build unique sculptures. This class give your child a unique opportunity to grow, explore, and experiment using environmental art.

Learn all about pet and animal care with species ranging from guinea pigs to horses. Students work with veterinarian Kathleen Weiman and biology teacher Alex Gerin to learn what it takes to become a licensed vet. Participants learn to suture, read x-rays, set a broken bone, and diagnose mock cases. Field trips may include visits to veterinarian offices, the Cornell equine animal hospital, an exotic animal hospital, the Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the North Shore Animal League.

This exciting program offers a collaborative experience with the Webb Institute in Glen Cove. Participants in the Sea Perch Program first build an underwater robot at Portledge, then bring their robot to the Webb Institute for a day of in-water testing and head-tohead competitions to verify the quality of their construction and judge how well human operators can control their robots.

˘ Have your child journey with us through Coffin Woods, Portledge’s adjacent nature preserve! Each day, campers will be immersed in activities that expand their understanding of Coffin Woods’ ecosystem while teaching valuable wilderness survival tools. We will spend the week collecting and identifying plants, trees, native birds, and animals, then create a field guide to our findings. While hiking along the trails, campers will learn what it takes to create and maintain hiking trails. Participants will learn essential survival techniques such as map reading and using a compass to guide us to the pond at Coffin Woods, where campers get to explore its ecosystem while gathering and collecting data.

Renowned as the birthplace of DNA, Cold Spring Harbor Labs will conduct two classes that introduce students to the inner workings of DNA! Don’t miss out on this amazing learning experience.

Fun with DNA

Fun with DNA is an entry-level course involving the science of DNA. This program is designed for highly motivated students who are interested in expanding their knowledge of basic genetics and cell biology. They will be immersed in hands-on activities and laboratory-based experiments designed to increase genetic literacy, encourage critical and creative thinking skills, and spark career interest in the field of biotechnology.

Students will: • construct cell and DNA models; • use compound microscopes to view various cell types; • extract DNA from their own cells and from plants; • use stereo microscopes to observe mutations in fruit flies; and • genetically engineer bacteria cells with firefly genes.

Fun with DNA is a prerequisite for World of Enzymes.

˘ World of Enzymes

Developed as a follow-up to the popular Fun with DNA camp, World of Enzymes builds on basic concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology, enabling students to utilize more advanced techniques to manipulate DNA. Through direct observation and manipulation of enzymes, program participants develop a better understanding about the importance of proteins, not only in living things, but also in recombinant DNA technology, cloning, and other aspects of the biotech industry. Students will: • build molecular models; • observe enzymes in action that are used for food production and healthcare; • use enzymes to cut and splice DNA; • analyze DNA fragments with gel electrophoresis; and • make a personal DNA fingerprint.

Pre-requisite: Enrollment in World of Enzymes is limited to those students who previously participated in the Fun with DNA course.

Build Your Own Computer

Rockets and the Forces in Space

In this fun-filled course, students get to combine hands-on physics and rocketry to explore the science of flight and related topics such as gravity, lift, thrust, drag, air pressure, and the Bernoulli effect. Students participate in fun experiments involving gyroscopes, hand boilers, air currents, light, water atomizers, and plasma globes. There will also be demonstrations involving super magnets, electricity, and sound. Scientific principles behind each experiment will be thoroughly explained and discussed.

Students will also learn how to build and launch model rockets powered by air, water, solid fuel, baking soda, and dry ice. What a blast!

The Science Behind Eggs and Water

This hands-on science program focuses on water and eggs to show your child how incredible science can be. Participants will be exposed to a variety of phenomena involving eggs and water, including osmosis, the egg drop challenge, egg in a bottle, mad scientist egg-dyeing, capillary action, density, the water cycle, and much more! Let your child get into the heart of the action as we dive into some hands-on science!

Chemical engineers, come get your hands dirty and truly experiment with science. Participants learn how matter works and the science behind it. Your child is invited to join Senior Chess Master and science teacher Roger LaFlair for chess instruction and a mind-testing chess challenge. Students will gain a solid foundation that emphasizes the fundamental skills required to succeed at chess, including chess tactics, opening principles, and endgame theory. Participants will learn about chess notation, proper tournament etiquette, and the use of chess clocks. More intensive instruction is available to advanced players aspiring to become a ranked expert. Come build and program actual working robots with STEAM enthusiast and instructor Maria Zografos! In this special course, aspiring engineers will learn how to program LEGO Mindstorm robots. Drive cars! Explore space in rockets! Soar through the clouds in airplanes! This camp explores the wide world of vehicles and transportation through various games and simulations, providing campers with valuable hands-on educational experiences. Roblox Creation

Your child can do virtually anything in Roblox! Ideal for those interested in Roblox and STEAM, this camp offers the perfect opportunity to make 3D models, or play Worlds and Games using Roblox. Similar to using AutoCAD or Poser, Roblox allows students to learn about designing, planning, and 3D modeling on the computer. Battle Royale Camp: Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox

This camp focuses on all sorts of Battle Royale games, including Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, and more! Campers will train and battle each other in all sorts of battle royale modes, including real-life Nerf and Dodgeball!

Tournaments will be held towards the end of the week. Owning a device or computer that can play Fortnite, Roblox and/or Minecraft is recommended but not required.

Lacrosse Academy

Max Lax is a co-educational sports camp that introduces children to the sport of lacrosse, as well as other cooperative games.

Your child will learn the basics of lacrosse and participate in drills that develop valuable skills while making the experience fun. Your child will also participate in various team-building games such as capture the flag, water balloon team tag, lacrosse baseball, dodge ball, and European handball. There’s also plenty of opportunity to cool off from the hot summer sun with the Max Lax Mega Slip n’ Slide.

This 5-day fencing camp is a great opportunity for your child to spend the week having lots of fun while being introduced to the sport of fencing. The camp will be run by the staff of the New York Fencing Academy under the supervision of Sergey Danilov, designated US National Team Coach and 2018 Development Coach of the Year by the US Olympic Committee. Campers will learn the history of fencing, and be taught age-appropriate fencing skills in a setting that uses games and drills to make the learning process more enjoyable.

˘ Nick Tsikitas, the Director and Founder of the Heat Elite (the only Long Island D1 National Championship team in AAU history) and Portledge’s Varsity Basketball Coach, is directing our summer basketball academy. Nick and his staff of talented basketball players have created a curriculum that teaches the fundamentals of the game, along with advanced strategy and tactics.

Participants will have fun, learn new skills, make new friends, and work on fundamental basketball skills.

Shooting - All players will do extensive jump shooting work during the early morning session, with position-specific shots added in for each position group.

Ball-handling - We lead players through ball-handling drills to sharpen hand-eye coordination, muscle memory, focus, and the ability to regain control of the ball after an imperfect or unexpected bounce.

Defense - We believe that defensive IQ and body positioning is more important than athleticism, so we teach players the correct ways to move their feet and create pressure without fouling on and off the ball.

Offensive footwork - We take players through drills on changing speeds, screening techniques and strategy, as well as using and reading screens to get off a shot or to create mismatches. Great footwork with the ball and movement without the ball are seen as essential to becoming a top-tier scorer and offensive facilitator.

Athleticism - Athletes will go through performance training with staff members, incorporating running, agility, core strength, plyometric strength, and weight training.

Game strategy - The staff will put players in game situations to test them mentally and physically, enabling them to understand the game at a higher level.

Character development - We believe that The Portledge Basketball Academy is the most challenging and life-changing basketball camp in Long Island. We hold players to a strict set of conduct expectations with the goal of building positive character traits and teaching life skills. We train our staff to always bring positive attitude and to teach with constructive criticism to promote a love for the game of basketball.

Portledge Summer Adventures is excited to host the premier staff of Gold Coast Soccer for two weeks of fun learning. These coaches are specially trained to gauge each child’s abilities in order to determine the teaching plan that best suits the needs of individual players. They work closely with each player to develop self-confidence and a positive attitude, both on and off the field. This program is geared toward improving individual skills and abilities with or without the ball, while fostering a love for the game.

Gold Coast’s Mini Day Soccer Program introduces children ages 4-6 years old to the exciting world of soccer. Each week, the children are engaged in a soccer adventure that focuses on the FUNdamentals of the game. The coaches have a wonderful way of interacting with children, keeping them entertained while delivering a highly effective training program. All skills and concepts are taught through drills and team games, and participants progress rapidly as they see visible improvement with each mini-challenge presented by the coaches. All players get lots of touches on the ball and learn to make quick movements and sharp changes of direction while staying balanced and in control of the soccer ball. Every participant comes away a far better soccer player, learning valuable skills, getting plenty of exercise, and having tons of fun.

Baseball Academy

Back for another summer is Coach Marvin Rosario, who graduated from SUNY Old Westbury where he played baseball for four years and earned a BS in Education. Coach Rosario went on to teach and coach at Portledge and at the Storm Baseball Academy. The Portledge Baseball Academy is customized to address the needs of beginners as well as experienced ball players ages 6-12 years old. Players will be challenged, encouraged, and instructed throughout the day, starting with skills, drills, and fun. Running, hitting, catching, and throwing will all be emphasized, along with understanding situational tactics, teaching payers to love and appreciate the game. Players can expect a safe, fun, and instructive environment highlighted by two baseball games each day: one before lunch; and another game at the end of the day.

Also stressed is competitive drive, strategic match play, and mental toughness. SUMMER ACADEMIC INSTITUTE Geometry I (Prerequisites: Algebra I) This course is equivalent to a full-year of Geometry and the workload is intensive. Topics covered include logic, triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, inequalities, similarities, right triangle trig, constructions, surface area and volume, analytical geometry, and transformations. Portledge students can take this course for course credit by passing a final exam, but this does not exempt them from having to take four years of mathematics at Portledge.

NEW! Writer’s Notebook Workshop

What is a writer’s notebook? It is a special place where a writer can store and organize his or her ideas, prompts, stories, and inspirational content.

Participants will take notes based on all forms of communication, including quotes, lyrics, poems, memories, short stories, overheard conversations, reminders, photos, illustrations, and more! One example is finding a famous quote that you like and writing down thoughts that come to mind that are in some way connected to that quote. Self expression can take many forms, including writing, illustrating, or collecting pictures.

Another possible example is practicing a state of mindfulness during nature walks.

For example, during a nature walk, a student may observe a tree that reminds him or her of a past experience. These are just two examples of the many ideas that children can address in their notebooks.

Participating in the writer’s workshop can also reduce a child’s dependency on technology. Getting them to use a notebook to jot down ideas, experiences, and passions is a healthy alternative to addictive technologies. Participating in this class will help your child become more self-aware of the downside of tech-driven pop culture.

Your child’s writer’s notebook can even create the basis for a video game that draws from your writings and drawings.

Our Staff - The staff at Portledge Summer Adventures is made up of caring professionals who take a personal interest in each child’s happiness and wellbeing. The director and head teachers are certified teachers and coaches. Assistants are carefully supervised students and athletes who are interested in working with our campers.

Lunch Program - Lunch is provided for all children enrolled in early childhood programs and full days. Lunches consist of individually prepared sandwiches, bagels, yogurt, snack, fruit, juice or water. A bag lunch must be sent with all children enrolled in half-day programs.
