Dear Summer Adventure Families and Friends, Summer 2020 will soon be here, and we are looking forward to Summer Adventures at Portledge! Our camp dates are June 22 through August 14. We have several updates to announce. ˘ For the first time, we will collaborate with Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club (SCYC) on Centre Island and offer extended “add on” courses in beginner sailing and adventure boating. Additional highlights at SCYC will include swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing.
˘
˘ 13-15-year-old students will be able to build leadership skills at our new CIT (counselor in training) camp. ˘ We have several new art programs in production including pouring, giant sculpture, and excursions to the Nassau County Museum of Art. Traditional favorites such as pottery and jewelry making will also be offered. ˘ Miss Donna is coming back to teach hands-on science and STEM with her gentle approach to learning. A visit to the Webb Institute, courses in Marine Biology and our fabulous Junior Vet camp are all being offered again. ˘ Don’t forget our sports favorites including badminton, lacrosse, baseball, soccer, fencing, and six full weeks of basketball. Chess and other classes including coding, Minecraft, VR, and other tech are on the docket. ˘ We are continually adding courses and times for both our early childhood and older students. We can happily keep most campers busy until 5:30pm. ˘ Geometry, Algebra II, and SAT/ACT prep will be offered, as they are every year. EXCITING NEW SPECIAL INTEREST NEW Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club on Centre Island Add-Ons: Portledge Summer Adventures has joined in partnership with Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club to expand our offerings to include boating and swimming. Students will spend the morning at Portledge and be transported at 1 pm to Centre Island for an afternoon on the water at SCYC. Transportation to Centre Island is included with the program. All afternoon pick ups will be at SCYC. Don’t miss out on this fun new opportunity.
Adventure Boating Class
This recreational class is specially designed for those who want to be on the water but aren’t too keen about racing. Participants will be introduced to a variety of club-owned boats including Sonars, Pixels, Open Bic’s and Keelboats, stand-up paddle boards, and kayaks, along with swimming. This class is available on a first come, first served basis to a maximum of ten children per session. Dates: July 6 - 10, July 20 - 24 Ages: 8 - 13 years old Time: 1:30 - 5:30 pm Course Fee: $ 750/wk
Beginner Sailing
This class is designed for younger sailors with little or no sailing experience. Sailors will learn the basics of boat rigging, boat handling, seamanship, develop self-confidence, foster respect for the marine environment, and practice teamwork skills. The main goal of this program is to promote sailing skill development in a safe and fun environment. Boat ownership is not required; instruction takes place in club-owned Optimists/Open Bic’s with one sailor per boat. This class is available on a first come, first served basis to a maximum of eight children per session. NEW! CIT/ Leadership Camp
This program is offered to the teen that has aged out of traditional camp programs and is not quite ready for a full time position/job. CIT trainees will participate in leadership workshops as well as receive real life job experiences. The summer will be divided into eight mini-lessons including: CPR/first aid training, job etiquette, and team building exercises. Twice a week, CIT trainees will attend an after-camp reflection meeting which will be led by certified teachers/ administrators and guest speakers. These meetings encourage CITs to share experiences as well as listen and learn from their peers and professionals in the area of early childhood/secondary education. Upon successful completion of the eight week program, CIT’s will receive a certificate, resume guidance, and a letter of recommendation. Early Childhood at Portledge Summer Adventures is a fun and dynamic program for children ages 2-6 years old with lunch and snack included. Recognizing that each child brings an innate curiosity and sense of wonder to his or her learning, the Early Childhood program builds upon these organic learning processes to encourage collaborative learning. We will continue with weekly themes that will engage your child in Reggio Emilia inspired classroom settings, while also adding new options to your child’s schedule. Each day, your child will engage in indoor and outdoor play, which is the most effective method for promoting growth and learning during early childhood. Daily activities include water play, cooking, art, music, and yoga. Each classroom will be equipped with a sensory bin that builds upon the theme of the week, enabling children to bring in items from home for others to investigate. And, of course, each week will wrap up with our Special Visitor. Many children enjoy spending the entire day at Summer Adventures. To meet the needs of these children and their families, we offer ADD-ON programs that meet from 1-3 pm each day to extend your child’s day. This summer we will introduce a new comprehensive Add-On called “Early Childhood Extension” for early childhood students. This Add-On offers a range of daily and weekly activities for children 3 - 6 years old. See page 8 for a full description.
Toddlers: Age 2
The Toddler Program is often a child’s first introduction to a formal play-group and a first opportunity to separate from mom and dad. Skilled teachers provide a great deal of love and support during this time of transition and first introduction to school. The Toddler Program offers a fun, low-key atmosphere where children feel totally comfortable and are able to express themselves while exploring their environment through the senses of sight, sound, and touch. The Toddler Program offers two options for daily start time: 9 am and 11 am. Toilet training is not necessary. Children may attend two, three, or five days per week for up to seven weeks. In the Nursery Program, children continue to learn through play, which encourages exploration and discovery. Portledge Summer Adventures offers a variety of options for young people to perform on stage and to master their theatre arts skills. For added flexibility, we will offer two one-week programs that dovetail with our four-week program. The individual one-week programs will be directed by mainstages. During the month of July, join us for four full weeks of theatre arts, where your child will learn to sing, act, dance, and engage in stage design.

Join mainstages for two fun-filled themed theater weeks featuring games, skills building workshops, and Broadway musical fun! Participants will get a taste for all aspects of theatre, including improvisation, character creation, voice work, costume and make-up design, and much more! Each week culminates in an interactive performance with professional mainstages performers featuring the participants’ creative collaborations. Dates: June 29 - July 3, Aug. 3 - 7 Ages: 7 - 12 years old Time: 9 am - 3 pm Course Fee: $600 for one week, $1,100 for two weeks
Theatre Arts - Drama
Taught by Ms. Kathleen Moore, now in her 18th year of teaching drama, students work together with friends and cast mates to create an amazing production. Daily activities include: • Singing - learn the songs for the play and work with piano accompanist to perfect your pitch • Dancing - each day the actors work on dance and choreography for the show • Acting - script reading, skits, and on stage acting • Set design - see the set come to life throughout the six weeks • Costume design - participants get to design and make colorful costumes Students who participate in this program learn to work together to achieve a common goal. In the process they learn to strengthen their leadership and communication skills, establish greater self-confidence, and have lots of fun along the way. This year’s production is TBD. Ballet
We offer a classic ballet class taught by Ms. Kathleen Moore, who ascribes to the Vaganova Syllabus, a form of Russian ballet. Kathleen has taught ballet for the past 15 years at the Russian Ballet School in Sea Cliff and at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School in New York City. Courses range from Pre-Ballet through Ballet IV with Pointe, accompanied by character class. Tap Dance Add-On

Intensive Ballet
The Intensive Ballet classes are taught by Ms. Kathleen Moore, a renowned ballet instructor. This program is geared to students who have progressed to level III ballet or higher. The typical morning consists of ballet barre, pointe class, centre class, variations class, and character class. Time is also allocated to practicing learned skills. Students should bring soft shoes, pointe shoes, and character shoes. Dates: June 15 - 19, June 22 - 26, Aug. 3 - 7, Aug 10 - 14 Age: must be level III or higher Time: 9 am - 2 pm Course Fee: $550 for one week, $1,000 for 2 weeks

It’s a Shore Thing
Participants join the folks from Claynation to create projects in pottery, paintings, mosaics, and more. Various ocean-inspired projects make this a swimmingly fun week. Dates: June 29 - July 3 Time: 9 - 12 noon Ages: 6 - 12 years old Course Fee: $435
Sculpture Class
Using wire armatures, plaster, and paint, students will create giant sculptures based on everyday objects. One can consider creating a giant crayon, a pencil, an apple, a phone … whatever a child can dream of! ANYTHING can be transformed into a giant size sculpture in this fun, fantastic class! Along the way, we will discuss other types of sculpture, take nature walks, use found objects, and take a field trip to The Nassau County Museum of Art to explore their outdoor oversized sculptures. Dates: July 6 - 10 Time: 9 am - 3 pm Ages: 9 - 14 years old Course Fee: $725
Pouring Class
Pouring paint. What’s so exciting about that? Ordinary paint transforms into magical masterpieces with a little help from some secret additives. It has never been so magical. Participants mix colors and add mediums that transform ordinary paint into masterpieces. Learn the basics of pouring paint and dive into the many different techniques. Test out different ingredients as well as styles and see how each one reacts to the acrylic paint! Maybe bring in your own medium and guess the outcome! This is where science meets art! Come explore and create with us! Dates: July 13 - 17 Time: 9 am - 3 pm Ages: 9 - 14 years old Course Fee: $725
Sewing and Fiber Arts
Campers explore hand-sewing, embroidery, knitting, weaving, needle-felting and more by creating fun, one-of-a-kind fiber arts projects. Students are guided by patient and skilled instructor to embrace their imagination and harness their potential through creation. Summer Adventurers are thrilled to “throw” clay on wheels and glaze and fire their works of art in a kiln! Participants create two projects each day. Each morning, the emphasis is on hand building and using various techniques. Each afternoon concludes with wheel throwing and painting/ glazing. Chinese DIY Folk Art
This course focuses on Chinese DIY folk art to promote interaction with and understanding of Chinese culture throughout the Portledge community. Activities include Chinese paper cutting, folding, DIY lanterns, hand puppets, shadow puppets, brush painting, and more. This class also explores basic Chinese vocabulary and conversations relating to the topics of each day. Dates: July 13 - 17, July 20 - 24 Ages: Rising 4th - 8th grade Time: 9 am - 1 pm Course Fee: $585
Warhol and Other Greats
Participants learn about famous artists! They can recreate Warhol’s famous diptych using their own photo, paint like Van Gogh, and dot-to-dot like Seurat. Student artists can form a human art chain in the style of Keith Haring! Become your own fine artist while learning about and from the greats! Dates: July 20 - 24 Time: 9 am - 1 pm Ages: 7 - 12 years old Course Fee: $585
Develop Your Own Soap, Lip Balm and Body Scrubs

This week-long class covers a broad range of fundamental baking skills, including pastry dough, quick breads, pies, cakes, tarts, and of course, cupcake making and cake decorating. Participants get to stack and ice their own layer cakes (just like the pros), make assorted flavors of buttercream, and use professional piping tips of all shapes and sizes. Pre Vet Program
Participants can learn all about pet and animal care with species ranging from guinea pigs to horses. Students work with veterinarian Kathleen Weiman and biology teacher Alex Gerin to learn about what it takes to become a licensed vet. This class will also cover topics such as vet exams, mock cases to diagnose, x-rays, suturing, setting a broken bone, pet first aid, and instruction in animal CPR. Students get to visit a veterinary clinic to observe pets being examined in a variety of situations, an animal shelter to learn about rescued animals, a stable to learn about large animal health and dental care, and many more hands-on learning experiences. Field trips may include the Cornell Cooperative Extension Farm, the North Shore Animal League, Hunter’s Grove, and the Bronx Zoo Veterinary. As a private engineering college, the Webb Institute offers a dual major in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Fun with DNA
Fun with DNA is an entry-level course involving the science of DNA. This program is designed for highly motivated students who are interested in expanding their knowledge of basic genetics and cell biology. They will be immersed in hands-on activities and laboratory-based experiments designed to increase genetic literacy, encourage critical and creative thinking skills, and spark career interest in the field of biotechnology. Students will: • construct cell and DNA models; • use compound microscopes to view various cell types; • extract DNA from their own cells and from plants; • use stereo microscopes to observe mutations in fruit flies • genetically engineer bacteria cells with firefly genes. Long Island Sound offers a unique setting for hands-on marine adventures. Students learn the basics in biology, ecology, and oceanography. They also learn about the aquatic life in Long Island through hands-on activities and field trips. As scientists, we can learn how a fish lives its life by observing how it looks. We can determine its diet, how fast it swims, and the habitat in which it lives by interpreting the clues that nature provides. We will explore sharks, aquatic turtles, fish, crustaceans, mollusks and learn about their amazing adaptations. Field trips further enhance the exploration of marine life on Long Island. Your child is invited to join Senior Chess Master and science teacher Roger LaFlair for chess instruction and a mind-testing chess challenge. Lacrosse Academy
Max Lax is a co-ed sports camp that introduces campers to the sport of lacrosse, as well as other cooperative games. They will learn the basics of lacrosse and participate in drills that develop valuable skills while making the experience fun. Your child also participates in team-building games such as capture the flag, water balloon team tag, lacrosse baseball, dodge ball, and European handball. This 5-day fencing camp is a great opportunity for your child to have lots of fun while being introduced to the sport of fencing. Their coaches are specially trained to gauge each child’s abilities in order to determine the teaching plan that best suits the needs of the individual player. They work closely with each camper to develop self-confidence and a positive attitude, both on and off the field. This program is geared toward improving individual skills and abilities with or without the ball, while fostering a love for the game. Robbie Wagner Tennis Instruction
Tennis instruction by Robbie Wagner combines fun and fitness with a program that focuses on athletic training along with positive reinforcement. Also stressed is competitive drive, strategic match play, and mental toughness. ˘ Coach Marvin Rosario is back for another summer! A graduate of SUNY Old Westbury, Coach Rosario played baseball for four years and earned a BS in Education. He presently teaches 4th grade and is the Director of Player Development for the Long Island Storm Sports Academy. The Portledge Baseball Academy is customized to address the needs of beginners as well as experienced ball players ages 6-12 years old. Players are challenged, encouraged, and instructed throughout the day. Running, hitting, catching, and throwing are all emphasized, along with understanding situational tactics that enhance a player’s appreciation for the game. This course is equivalent to a full-year of Geometry and the workload is intensive. Topics covered include logic, triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, inequalities, similarities, right triangle trig, constructions, surface area and volume, analytical geometry, and transformations. Portledge students can take this course for course credit by passing a final exam, but this does not exempt them from having to take four years of mathematics at Portledge. This course can also be taken for non-credit to strengthen skills in preparation for the upcoming school year. This is a 12 hour SAT/ACT prep course (plus practice tests) taught by A-List Education’s test experts. It begins with a real retired diagnostic SAT or ACT on July 16th. Students learn skills and strategies applicable to these tests during the weeks of July 20th and 27th, and then practice what they’ve learned with a second practice test on Aug 4th. Attendees will learn strategies and content fundamental to both the SAT and ACT, and A-List’s engaging instructors keep this fast-paced class fun and informative. Following each practice test, parents and students receive a detailed score analysis. At the conclusion of the course, parents and students are entitled to a complimentary consultation with A-List to assess their progress and discuss future steps for test preparation. This course is ideal for students who have not begun to prepare for these tests, or serves as a great refresher to enhance test scoring in the fall. Our Staff - The staff at Portledge Summer Adventures is made up of caring professionals who take a personal interest in each child’s happiness and wellbeing. The program director and head teachers are certified teachers and coaches. Assistants are carefully supervised students and athletes who demonstrate an interest in working with our campers. Lunch Program - Lunch is provided for all children enrolled in early childhood programs and full days. Lunches consist of individually prepared sandwiches, bagels, yogurt, snack, fruit, juice or water. A bag lunch must be sent with all children enrolled in half-day programs. Snacks are also provided throughout the day. We are a peanut-free environment.

Registration & Payment - A $150 non-refundable deposit is required with each child’s registration form. Adventures has a Registered Nurse on campus five days a week. In addition, many of our teachers and coaches are certified in CPR and first aid.
Medical Information - A completed
medical form as well as a copy of your child’s immunization records must be on file prior to the start of any program. Permission is granted by signature on the registration form for your child to engage in all program activities except as noted on your child’s health form. A medical form will be mailed with your registration confirmation.
