Dear Members of the Portledge Community, This important document provides a relatively detailed review of the school’s financial standing. It serves to celebrate and recognize all those who have philanthropically supported Portledge. The Annual Report gives a view of our revenue flows against our costs. As you know, your investment directly and positively impacts all facets of our school, from faculty training and professional development to enrich the experience of all of our students and from security enhancements to protecting against the recent health crisis. In short, it provides resources needed to enhance the daily experience of the students. It allows us to deliver an innovative and effective learning environment.

This report cannot show the story behind the numbers, one of commitment and sacrifice to keep us Portledge Strong during the most beastly experiences. Simply put, this year, your support kept our community whole and well.

Despite these health battles, 2020-2021 has been another landmark year for Portledge. While experiencing the eye of the storm, the Strategic Vision and Planning Board Committee (along with the administrative team) managed to forge a strong outline for our path forward. This year-long mini Strategic Plan helped navigate us to the other side of the storm. We are now at the halfway point of this process. We have made great strides in all of the ambitious goal areas. Key areas of focus were: ‘how to return to school as we knew it,’ health and wellness, strengthening our community through Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI), beginning phase 1 of the Master Plan road work, and encouraging philanthropy. As we continue to work towards achieving our targets, your support to The Portledge Fund allows us the opportunity to allocate resources strategically to maintain and strengthen our forward momentum in this plan.

Our Campus Master Plan is progressing positively, and this will indeed be a massive lift for all involved. We have already taken the first step to begin the road work. We trust this part of the project will be complete in time for the students to return to campus in the fall. The dedication shown by those who actively work to make the plan a success is a true testament to the strength of support that we receive from our community. As road work ensues, we will concurrently work on the architectural plans for the proposed Athletic and Wellness Center. We will make this facility fully operational sometime in 2022. We have been

carefully preparing for the financial impact of this new facility and contemplating the substantial curricular and programmatic opportunities for our students.

Two critical aspects of community building also became a focus in 2020-21; Health and Wellness and DEI. We already have robust health, physical education, mindfulness, and digital citizenship (to mention a few). Our goal now is to strengthen and align these programs with other aspects of school life. As I said in my comments for this report last year, our commitment to the four Portledge Pillars will play an increasingly vital role in shaping our community values. We need to do all we can to develop exemplary citizens. We intend to use our training in the DEI area for this purpose. We believe it essential that all community members are involved in this work and that all benefit from its outcomes. We have made great strides in this area and plan to build on these foundations to further our school’s mission.

As for the philanthropic goal in the mini-plan, well, evidence is abundant that our community has risen to the challenge to support our kids. Support during the crisis has not waivered, and commitment and love for our school are as strong as ever. As we now set our sights on the start of a new school year, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation for the continued, vigorous, and generous contributions you have made to our 2020-21 school year and The Portledge Fund. Whether it be with your valuable time, sharing your skills, or your charitable donations, please know that the faculty, staff, administration, and students are eternally grateful to you for keeping us all Portledge Strong.

I want you to know that your gift this year made a tremendous difference in the lives of more than 535 students at Portledge. You made the right decision when you opened your heart and wallet to these children, and we all appreciate what you have done.

Your contributions have had a direct and substantial effect on Portledge. Your gifts have helped attract the best teachers and students, helped the school keep up with cutting edge technology in the classroom, helped to keep our sports teams in the best shape, our aspiring artists attending the best museums, helped to send our burgeoning scientists and mathematicians to world renowned laboratories as they strive to understand our world. Your gift to the annual fund created access, independent minds, life opportunities, and excited our children about learning.

This endowment fund enables Portledge School to attract the best teachers.

Student Scholarship Endowment ($478,229.88) Portledge School and the Board of Trustees have long held a commitment to offer financial aid to help foster a dynamic and diverse student body. Now more than ever, many qualified and talented applicants are in need of financial assistance.

Henry Studio Art Memorial Fund ($74,050.03) Established in memory of Allison Henry who attended Portledge School from nursery through seventh grade and would have graduated with the Class of 2003, this fund commemorates Allison’s years at Portledge and her love of art by supporting the continued growth of the studio art program.

Dr. Carolyn Bovell Memorial Fund ($44,549.09) Established in memory of Dr. Carolyn Bovell, to pay tribute to this extraordinary teacher and continue her dedicated efforts to help students improve their skills and expand their appreciation for good writing, income from this fund will support the teaching of writing in each school division by funding workshops, enhancing faculty training and awarding a prize in Dr. Bovell’s name to be given to a senior who achieves excellence in writing.

The Robert A. Joslin, Jr. Scholarship Fund ($144,679.81) Established in 2006 in memory of Robert Joslin, father of Harrison ‘17 and Olivia ‘20, this fund guarantees full tuition assistance for a qualified student with financial need to attend Portledge School. In addition to support from individual gifts.

The Keroden Endowed Fund for Faculty Compensation ($270,987.84) Established by an anonymous donor in honor of founder and former trustee William T. Dunn, Jr. (1965-1992), income from this endowment supports faculty salaries and benefits.

This fund supports an award presented annually at graduation to that member of the senior class who, throughout his or her career at Portledge, has best exemplified the character and achievement of Barbara Lisanne Ayers (Class of 1977) through profound devotion to learning together with a consistently high level of academic accomplishment.

The Jean Cattier Foreign Language Fund ($46,668.37)

Len and Caryl Shapiro Scholarship Fund ($169,075.93)

Established in memory of one of Portledge’s founding trustees, this fund is intended to support the school’s foreign language faculty. Income from this endowment is used to support the professional growth of foreign language instructors.

The Daisy Hughes Scholarship Fund ($36,475.30) Established in 1995 in memory of the mother of Andrew Hughes ’88, income from this endowment is used to support the school’s general scholarship fund.

The Jennings History Chair ($188,087.83) Named for Prescott Jennings, Jr. (History Department Head and Head of College Counseling 1974-1992; Trustee 1994-2004), income from this endowment supports the compensation for the sitting Head of the History Department.

Established by Alumni Parents Caryl and Len Shapiro this fund was created to provide tuition assistance for a qualified student with financial need to attend Portledge School. Len and Caryl have been longstanding stalwart supporters of Portledge with Len having served on the Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2013. During his nine year tenure, his two children, Ben ‘10 and Eve ‘13 graduated from Portledge and went on to successful college careers. Caryl also served in Admissions as an office associate and tour guide who enjoyed showing the beautiful Portledge campus to potential applicant families. Mr. and Mrs. Shapiro recognize the importance of a quality independent school education and generously provide these funds to open that opportunity to all students regardless of financial background.

David W. Hoyler Faculty Award ($3,371.11) This fund supports an award given annually at graduation to a member of the Portledge School faculty for outstanding dedication to students and exemplary commitment to teaching within and beyond the classroom.
