FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

The Work of Education Navigating innovation while remaining grounded in the values that define Portledge.

In a recent podcast interview, I described artificial intelligence as no longer a distant concept in education. It is a present, rapidly evolving force reshaping how we teach, learn, and think. At Portledge, we are taking a deliberate approach—neither rushing to adopt nor resisting change— while recognizing that, unlike educators, AI is not accountable for its decisions, which introduces real institutional risk.

A key part of this work has been our collaboration with RAIL (Responsible AI in Learning), through which Portledge earned a Middle States endorsement for the ethical and effective integration of AI. The process prompted a group of faculty and administrators to examine all aspects of school life and provided a framework grounded in transparency and accountability. To guide this work, the school established a dedicated AI Task Force, mirrored at the Board level, to consider the broader implications of AI across culture, infrastructure, and governance.

This work extends beyond the classroom.

The Parents Association hosted two informational sessions to demystify AI and examine its impact on students and families. The dialogue was helpful and

forward-looking, addressing questions about academic integrity, digital literacy, and the realities of a rapidly changing landscape.

‘Student voice’ has also been central to our approach. The creation of a studentled AI Club reflects real initiative, offering a space where students can discuss emerging technologies, experiment responsibly, and engage in conversations about ethics and innovation. In a recent PA ‘fishbowl’ presentation, it was clear that our students are not simply ‘passive recipients of change, but active participants in shaping it’.

For faculty, this moment calls for both learning and reflection. Throughout the year, teachers have engaged in professional development focused on AI to deepen understanding rather than replace judgment. The goal is not to chase novelty, but to consider carefully how AI can support critical thinking, creativity, and authentic learning. We have to think about ways we can teach students to better imagine outcomes, problems, and situations that currently do not exist.

Ultimately, our approach is defined by balance and healthy skepticism. We are introducing AI that enhances learning,

while remaining mindful of its limitations and risks. To avoid Huxley’s dystopic vision of a Brave New World, we believe that the role of a school is not to blindly adopt new technologies, but to model thoughtful engagement—keeping individual freedom and human agency at the center.

In doing so, we aim to prepare our students not only to use AI responsibly, but to understand it, question it, and challenge it. That is the work of education in this moment: not to follow change, but to meet it with as much clarity as possible.

Leading with Heart A RETROSPECTIVE WITH SARALYN LAWN

O

n any given morning, Saralyn Lawn can be seen outside the Lower School, greeting students with a smile or high-five, encouraging

a nervous child before a play, or celebrating a lost tooth.

Her warmth, leadership, and dedication have shaped the Lower School experience for the past 11 years. As she steps down as Director, she reflects on a decade of growth, evolving curriculum, and the joyful development of countless students.

Under Saralyn’s guidance, the Lower School curriculum has continuously evolved since her arrival, driven by extensive professional development and a commitment to smooth transitions for students moving from the Lower School to the Middle School. Despite these structural advancements, the soul of the school has remained beautifully constant.

“From the very first day I came here, I felt very welcomed,” Saralyn recalls. “It was such a warm, inviting environment, and that’s still what I hear from visitors to the school. Nine out of ten times, they mention how everyone seems so happy and engaged. The kids think of it as their home away from home.”

One of the joys for Saralyn has been watching Portledge Schools’ youngest learners transform into young adults, with the shared thread of kindness, grace, and confidence shining through. Saralyn has more than a few precious memories that will stay with her, from a Coco Chanel wrapped tree stump to horses being ridden around campus decked out in blue and white for our Blue White Day. But it is the relationships she’s built here, with faculty, staff, students, and families alike, that remain at the forefront.

One of Saralyn’s guiding philosophies is, “It’s easy to make a living. It’s hard to make a difference.” She has always strived to lead with heart, remain approachable, and find the most generous interpretation of any rocky situation. “People might

forget that they learned a phonetic concept, but they won’t forget how you made them feel.”

While stepping away to focus on her family has been one of the hardest decisions she has ever made, Saralyn embraces the value of change. She is grateful to stay partially connected to Portledge next year to help with the transition to Ms. Lauren Domaradzki, who will take over as our next Lower School Division Director. Lauren is a deeply respected and valued member of the Portledge community, having served as a Lower School administrator for the past nine years, with her role evolving into its current form as Assistant Director of the Lower School and Dean of Students. Lauren says, “As I step into this role, I feel incredibly grateful to have learned from Saralyn. She has set a powerful example of what this work should look like, and her impact will continue to guide both the Portledge Lower School and me each day. Her presence, wisdom, and warmth will be deeply missed.”

Looking ahead, Saralyn hopes Portledge will continue to follow the science of learning and trending educational research to shape its instruction. Most importantly, her lasting wish for the school is simple:

“Always keep its heart at its core.”

ALL-SCHOOL SNAPSHOTS

EXPERIENCES THAT INSPIRE: FIELD TRIPS WITH IMPACT At Portledge, learning goes far beyond the classroom. Students across all divisions participate in field trips that not only enriched their academic knowledge but also foster empathy, creativity, and global awareness. These carefully designed experiences allow students to engage with real-world challenges, explore cultural perspectives, and see firsthand how their learning connects to life beyond Portledge.

EIGHTH GRADERS VISIT THE HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM Our Eighth Graders visited the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center, creating a deeply meaningful and personal learning experience. Students explored updated exhibits that combined historical context with interactive, thought-provoking displays. They reflected on the human impact behind the events, approaching the experience with attentiveness, curiosity, and respect.

A defining moment came when students had the rare opportunity to hear from Mr. Woolf, a 97-year-old Holocaust survivor. His firsthand testimony brought history vividly to life. Students listened intently, asked thoughtful questions, and many personally thanked him. Following the trip, students wrote thank-you notes and letters, reflecting on how the visit had impacted them.

UPPER SCHOOL AT STAGE THE CHANGE Portledge Upper School students had an unforgettable experience at Stage the Change, a program that empowers young artists to use creativity and performance as a catalyst for social impact. Throughout the day, students participated in workshops that encouraged collaboration, problem-solving, and storytelling skills that extend far beyond the stage.

The highlight of the trip was hearing from Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor J. Harrison Ghee, who shared their journey as a groundbreaking Broadway performer and advocate for inclusivity. Ghee was interviewed by Remi E. ’27, giving Portledge students a unique opportunity to engage directly with a celebrated artist.

THIRD GRADE STUDIES LONG ISLAND This fall, Portledge’s Third Graders brought their study of Long Island to life with two memorable field trips. In October, students visited the Garvies Point Museum and Preserve to explore the region’s natural history and early cultures. They examined artifacts, learned about the lives of Indigenous peoples, and walked the wooded trails overlooking Hempstead Harbor, seeing the landscape much as it might have appeared centuries ago.

In December, the class visited the Whaling Museum, diving into Long Island’s maritime history. Through hands-on activities and interactive exhibits, students connected classroom lessons to the stories, people, and industries that have defined the island over time.

The Middle School Interdisciplinary Showcase AT PORTLEDGE, LEARNING IS DESIGNED TO CONNECT. The Middle School Interdisciplinary Showcase highlighted how students engage across subjects to deepen understanding and spark curiosity. Through grade-level themes spanning literature, history, and social change, students explored big ideas from multiple perspectives, demonstrating the power of collaboration and inquiry. Rooted in the IB tenets, the experience encourages students to think critically, make meaningful connections, and apply their learning in real-world contexts. The result was more than a collection of projects; it was a reflection of how Portledge students learn to question, synthesize, and see the bigger picture.

Learning doesn’t happen in isolation; it’s shaped by connection, collaboration, and interaction. This year’s Middle School Interdisciplinary Showcase was a clear example of the social and contextual learning that happens at Portledge.

Each grade approached the showcase through a distinct theme tied to their curriculum. Sixth Grade created projects inspired by A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga, using the novel as a springboard to explore curiosity, perseverance, and the possibilities of space exploration.

Seventh Grade examined the key events, ideas, and perspectives of the American Revolution, considering how competing viewpoints shaped the birth of a nation.

Eighth Grade analyzed the influence and legacy of the Muckrakers during the Progressive Era, investigating how journalism and advocacy sparked reform and social change.

Through thoughtful projects and presentations, students demonstrated how learning in one subject can deepen understanding in another.

Eighth-grade student, Greyson W. shared, “The goal of our interdisciplinary project was to learn how to connect all of our classes.”

Building on this idea, Middle School History Teacher Ms. Conniff explained, “This approach mirrors the core of the International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, which encourages students to think beyond individual subjects and instead approach problems with a global, interconnected perspective.

By synthesizing ideas across history, science, math, and language, students practice the very skills IB values most: critical thinking, inquiry, and reflection.

They are not just learning content; they are learning how to learn, how to question, and how to apply knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts.”

Rooted in the core tenets of the IB continuum, from the Primary Years Programme through the Diploma Programme, the showcase reflected a commitment to developing students who think critically, make meaningful connections, and engage with the world around them. Interdisciplinary learning encourages students to synthesize knowledge across subject areas, strengthening both their analytical skills and their ability to approach complex questions with perspective.

By bridging disciplines, students not only gain a deeper understanding of the content but also build the habits of mind that serve as cornerstones of their academic experience.

The showcase invited students to step back and see the bigger picture, how curiosity, creativity, and partnership are central to their daily academic experience. As Visual Arts Department Chair John Greene reflected, “This was an incredible way to teach students to learn. It fostered knowledge, made education feel more real, and helped connect every subject to a single topic so students could see that the whole was greater than its parts.”

From the months of planning and preparation to the event itself, the Interdisciplinary showcase was a true celebration of the vibrant culture of inquiry that defines Portledge Middle School.

The International Baccalaureate is more than a rigorous academic program; it is a philosophy centered on growth, inquiry, and purpose. While often misunderstood as simply a prestigious credential, the IB experience at Portledge is designed to shape how students think, question, and engage with the world. Through close faculty support, interdisciplinary learning, and a culture that encourages academic risk-taking, students develop the skills and confidence to navigate complexity and lead with both intellect and integrity.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) can feel like a bit of a mystery, often associated with academic rigor. At Portledge, however, its purpose is clear.

“We don’t just value what students achieve, but who they become through the process,” explains IB Coordinator Trish Rigg. While the diploma certainly bolsters college applications, its true intent goes far beyond prestige, focusing on developing critical thinkers, morally courageous individuals, and lifelong learners.

The IB isn’t about producing perfect students; it’s about shaping individuals who can question, connect, and contribute to a complex world. Through the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), students evaluate multiple perspectives and act with empathy.

These educational tenets are evident in how our community approaches learning. Head of School, Simon Owen-Williams, notes, “What I was most surprised about was... the way that students were transformed in their thinking. The conversations changed... it gave us a big change from a more static system of testing to a more

dynamic one where students really started to take academic risks.”

confident in their ability to manage complex tasks.

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is demanding, but after nearly a decade as a DP School, Portledge has deliberately created a structure that supports our students as they rise to the challenge.

The close-knit relationships between faculty and students create a safe space for academic risk-taking. Teachers offer constant guidance on major milestones, helping students manage their workload while prioritizing long-term well-being.

Assistant Head of School and Director of College Counseling, Karen Crowley, notes that this preparation is exactly what universities are looking for: “Colleges and universities report to us that they believe the IB Diploma Programme is the best preparation for college for a variety of reasons: the emphasis on critical thinking, writing, independently driven scholarship, and interdisciplinary connectivity, to name a few.”

For many, this environment leaves a lasting mark. Charlotte Murrell ‘21 reflects, “The combination of dedicated teachers and a close-knit IB community transformed me into someone who now loves stepping out of her comfort zone. I think the IB DP taught me, more than anything, the importance of interdisciplinary, lifelong learning.”

While not every student will earn the full IB Diploma, success isn’t solely defined by the final credential. The experience itself remains transformative; even those who do not earn the formal diploma often describe leaving better prepared for college-level work and more

The result is a graduate who feels ready for the next level. Michelle Oh ’24 shares: “My experience at Portledge and the IB has shaped me into the person I am today. Now that I am in college, I feel like we were overprepared (in a good way).”

By graduation, a successful IB student is defined by their resilience and ability to see the world through an interdisciplinary lens. In the words of Mr. Owen-Williams: “Questions trump answers.” At Portledge, we ensure our students are ready to ask the right ones.

Wherever they appeared, the Jazz Band brought energy, talent, and a love of music to the moment. Their performances became highlights at events throughout the year, from the Middle and Upper School Parent Mixers and Thanksgiving Assembly to the MLK Jr. Assembly, Portledge Gala, and standout appearances at the Lincoln Center and the Tilles Center for Essentially Ellington. They also shared their music beyond campus, performing in Oyster Bay in the fall, returning for the Gold Coast Book Fair in the spring, and closing out the year back home at the Senior Dinner.

Each performance was more than just a chance to play; it was an opportunity to connect. Through their music, students helped bring people together, representing Portledge with creativity, confidence, and Panther Pride.

Behind the scenes, equally important work is underway. Teams are refining workflows, strengthening governance practices, and advancing long-term financial strategies to ensure that the school remains strong, sustainable, and future-focused.

Innovation is a defining part of this next chapter.

REIGNITING A HOCKEY TRADITION

Long Island.” Today, that legacy serves as the foundation for the program’s resurgence.

At Portledge School, hockey is more than a sport; it is tradition and a renewed vision for the future. Spanning a co-ed team for Grades 5–8 and both Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity programs, Portledge hockey is building something bigger: a connected, competitive pipeline designed to develop players and foster a culture reminiscent of the program’s early days.

Central to that resurgence is the Grades 5–8 program, where development and culture take root. “Having a 5–8 program is crucial…” says Rick DiPietro, Grades 5–8 coach, Boys Varsity team assistant, and former Goalie for the NY Islanders.

“When the varsity players joined us at practice, our kids thought it was the coolest thing ever. Playing for Portledge… trumps it all,” he adds. As Middle School player Gio C. ’32 shares, “Being a part of a hockey program that has so much history is so special… it makes me feel proud to be a part of the program.”

Hockey has long been a cornerstone of Portledge athletics, producing many notable alumni. From Division I competition to the NHL, our players are doing big things on the biggest stages.

“When Portledge was emerging, hockey was used to build recognition,” explains Hockey Program Director Phil Hills.

“Before long, we were the best team on

At the varsity level, that foundation is beginning to show results. In their first probationary year in the FAA league, the Boys’ team posted a 9–3 record,

and the Girls went 8–1, an early sign of progress. “The level of competition is more consistent with where the program is currently at,” says Boys Varsity Assistant Coach Robbie Beaton. “It’s exactly where we should be.”

But wins alone don’t define this team; it’s the shift in identity. Success often depended on a handful of standout players. Today, the emphasis is on depth, development, and collective buy-in. “In order to sustain and improve, you’ve got to have young boys and girls coming through the system,” Beaton explains.

This season, players supported one another across all levels, creating a program-wide sense of camaraderie.

For the Girls’ program, that connection is increasingly visible beyond campus.

This season, the team was featured twice

in Newsday: once during Women’s Empowerment Month and again as the U.S. Women’s National Team captured the 2026 Olympic Gold Medal. Notably, Portledge remains the only school on Long Island with an all-girls varsity hockey team. “It’s such an honor to play with these girls,” says Charlotte P. ’29.

“Girls from 8th grade to senior year bring so much to the table.” She adds, “One standout memory is our overtime win on Senior Night… it was exciting to beat Greenwich Academy on such a special night.”

As Portledge Hockey looks ahead, the path is clear: restore the pride that once made it a premier program. With a committed coaching staff, a growing base of young players, and a culture grounded in teamwork and resilience, the foundation is firmly in place.

Advancing Instruction through Visible Learning In January, Portledge faculty came together for a full-day Professional Development experience centered on Visible Learning, an evidence-based approach to teaching and learning grounded in global research.

Led by educator John Almarode, the session introduced faculty to a framework that prioritizes student growth by focusing on the instructional practices that have the greatest impact. As Lower School Division Director Saralyn Lawn, who organized this important opportunity, explained, “Visible Learning is about understanding what truly impacts student growth, not just achievement, and aligning our practices around that.”

At its core, Visible Learning emphasizes clarity—ensuring students understand what they are learning, why it matters, and how success is measured. “Students learn more when they understand their destination,” Lawn noted. “When learning targets and success criteria are clear, students are better prepared to engage, reflect, and take ownership of their progress.”

Importantly, this work extends beyond any one classroom or division. Because Visible Learning centers on instructional practice

rather than content, it creates a shared language of learning across grades. “When we align around these principles,” Lawn shared, “we strengthen the entire program and create more consistent, meaningful experiences for students.”

“Professional development has a greater impact when there is shared energy,” Lawn said. “Bringing all faculty together allows us to build that momentum.”

From Panther to Pioneer: Dr. Priscilla J. Slanetz ’82

As a member of an early graduating class, Dr. Priscilla Slanetz ’82 helped shape the culture and traditions of Portledge.

The Slanetz name is now permanently woven into campus through the Slanetz Science Wing, a legacy reflecting her family’s longstanding connection to the school. During her student years, Portledge was still establishing itself, and students were encouraged to participate broadly.

We had to do everything,” she recalls.

“The school was growing with us, so everyone was involved.” Those experiences led to lifelong friendships, including a recent 60th-birthday celebration with former classmates from the Class of ’82 Timothea Manolis D’Agostino, Lisa Masotto Farb, and Anne Schmutz Hovey.

Slanetz was deeply involved across campus, as a three-season athlete, Student Council member, and performer in school plays and musicals. One favorite memory is her senior-year basketball team, nicknamed “The Seven Dwarfs,” which, despite its size, won a league championship. Her sweatshirt nickname, “Doc,” would later prove fitting.

Beyond athletics, Slanetz participated in musicals, mentored younger students, and developed a love of mathematics in Lower School (taught by Mary Jonathan), an early influence on her path.

After Portledge, Slanetz attended Smith College, majoring in mathematics and minoring in chemistry while continuing her athletic career in field hockey. Though she briefly considered marine biology, she ultimately pursued medicine, inspired in part by her father, a general surgeon.

SPECIALIZED MEDICAL TRAINING:

Attended the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program, studying medicine alongside engineers and scientists.

NATIONAL LEADERSHIP:

Chairs national guideline committees and oversees the educational portfolio for the American College of Radiology.

BEYOND MEDICINE:

Enjoys hiking, bird watching, wildlife photography, and traveling— recently visiting the Galápagos Islands.

Slanetz went on to attend the HarvardMIT Health Sciences and Technology program, a collaborative program that combines medicine and engineering. The emphasis on problem-solving and emerging technologies proved to be a perfect match.

She eventually specialized in radiology and breast imaging, a field that blends technological innovation with direct patient care. Today, Slanetz works as part of a multidisciplinary team diagnosing breast cancers, performing biopsies, and helping guide treatment decisions for patients.

Her work extends well beyond the clinic.

Slanetz has led advancements in breast imaging, including developing MRI-guided breast biopsies in New England. She now oversees education for the American College of Radiology and serves on the Board of the Society of Breast Imaging.

In addition, she has been deeply involved in healthcare advocacy. In Massachusetts, she helped pass legislation requiring breast density notification, later adopted federally, and she recently supported a law eliminating out-of-pocket costs for medically necessary breast imaging.

Throughout her career, she has remained committed to mentoring younger physicians and balancing professional success with family life. When her children were young, she made the difficult decision to reduce her work schedule so she could be present for their activities, an unconventional move in academic medicine at the time— yet she has still authored over 290 peerreviewed publications!

Looking back, Slanetz believes success is best measured by the impact one has on others. “I hope I’ve helped make a difference—for my patients, my students, and the people around me,” she says.

Her advice to today’s Portledge students reflects the same spirit that shaped her own journey. “Study hard. Try new things.

Take risks,” she says. “And remember to be kind—to yourself and to others.”

A Message From the Alumni Council President

To anyone familiar with the Portledge campus, it will come as no surprise to know that no matter where in the world I am in the spring, when cherry blossoms (sakura, as they’re called in Japan) start to bloom, I think of Portledge. Since my first Portledge sakura season as a kindergartener back in 1996, much in the world has changed.

Then, my parents took photos of my friend Saki and me playing beneath falling pink petals to place in family photo albums for grandparents and our future selves to see. If you had told us that in the future we would be taking photos under these same trees with a camera attached to a phone to share with fresh acquaintances on something called social media, on something called the internet, we would have laughed in disbelief.

of the word “selfie”—remains the same closeknit community, where curious students learn to lead and to tend to the people and the environment around them. Not only does that comfort me; it astounds me.

That the Portledge community still exists, as palpably close and as strong as ever, is a feat worth marveling at and certainly worth supporting in whatever way we can—whether through love, attention, participation, or financial support.

Michael Vanderbilt Greetings from mid-coast Maine! My son and I just got back from a week in Wales, filled with castles, hiking, and just great.

He graduated from high school in June and will be heading to the University of Rochester this fall.

Jim Decker I am still toiling away as an international drug dealer for Astellas with travels to London, Beijing, and Malaga this past year. My oldest daughter was married last summer in Chicago. She’s 6’3”. He’s 6’7”.

It was a really tall wedding party!! My youngest daughter is a national volleyball champion in England, having won three trophies (so far) this year. My youngest son is a freshman at USC. Go Trojans!

Megan Lewis-Lyman I’m very well, living in Vermont with my husband and our dog “Goose”. I’m still painting, primarily watercolor and some alcohol inks. During the summers, I have been teaching an elementary art program.

I am a special educator during the school year. Our 24-year-old son, Jenner, lives in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He is a Grant writer and an extreme outdoor enthusiast!

Barbara Pollak-Lewis I recently curated two gallery shows at Arc Gallery in San Francisco on themes of personal journeys. I am currently teaching high school atelier classes at California College of the Arts (CCA).

Michael Pollio I am still living in Vermont. My oldest son got married last summer, and my youngest is still living in Seattle.

I’m not sure about my plans for Cape Cod in 2026, but I will reach out to let people know and see if we can catch up. I hope everyone is well and wish them a happy and healthy year ahead.

Anne Glass I made a big leap last summer and moved from New York to Michigan to become the Head of School at The Roeper School, a N-12 independent day school. I love my new school and my service here at Roeper! In January, I had the privilege of meeting Simon Owen-Williams in person. This was important to me because I am so proud of Portledge’s growth under

Simon’s leadership. I appreciated the warm welcome by Vincent Catapano and the chance to see Susan Simon and Phil Hills and tour my old school, which is so much stronger and more expansive in programs and facilities than the Portledge I remember from my days as a student. Go Panthers! In personal news, my son Jake graduated from the Robins School of Business at URichmond last year, and my younger son Owen is a junior at the Herbert School of Business at UMiami. Owen is currently running all over Europe on his semester abroad. Life is good!

Mary Grace Donaldson-Cipriano For the past three years, I’ve been living in Glen Cove with my husband, Anthony, and our senior rescue fur child, Maddie.

By day, I work as my Dad’s office manager in our family truck leasing business, and by night, I am growing my following as a content creator, blogger, performer, and liturgical musician. I am a song leader and member of the choir at my parish, St. Mary’s, in Roslyn Harbor. However, a great deal of my content focuses on my weight loss and fitness journey—I have lost 96 pounds in less than two years and am becoming an avid runner (with encouragement from and shared runs with my best friend, Gauri Bhatia—also class of ‘07). I’ve been featured on Patient Worthy, a social media site that has allowed me to share my journey with the disease of obesity, and I am starting to schedule speaking engagements right in Glen Cove.

Additionally, I serve as the PR director of the Glen Cove Young Democrats and attended the 2026 NY State of the State address in Albany, where I met Governor Kathy Hochul. I volunteer with the NOSH Delivers Kids’ Food Independence Program (with a number of Portledge students), I am launching a baseball podcast with my Dad, and I perform on a semi-regular basis with the North Shore Village Theatre. Miyuki Miyagi Miyuki Miyagi made her Off-Broadway debut as “Daphney” in the hit show, BEAU THE MUSICAL. BEAU developed a cultlike fan following, extended, and played to sold-out houses both in its downtown and theater district runs. This spring, BEAU was recognized for excellence in the NYC theater scene with one Drama League nomination, four Outer Critics Circle nominations, and an astonishing ten Drama Desk nominations. An astounding vote of confidence for this small eight-person show, BEAU is currently tied for the lead in Drama Desk nominations (including Broadway).
