A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Portledge Community, The 2025–2026 school year was one of remarkable growth, achievement, and momentum for Portledge School. As I reflect on all we accomplished together, I am filled with gratitude for the generosity and partnership that continue to strengthen our community.

This year, we welcomed one of the largest groups of new students in our school’s history, celebrated accomplishments in athletics, robotics, the arts, and academics, and launched our Strategic Plan, Forging Pathways to Excellence. Through each milestone, our students, faculty, staff, and families demonstrated the values that define Portledge: Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect.

At the heart of every Portledge experience are the relationships between our students and teachers. Day after day, our faculty inspire curiosity, nurture confidence, and challenge students to think deeply, create boldly, and grow into their best selves.

Portledge as “more than a school... a second home built out of care, patience, and a love so steady that it outlasts every grade we’ve received, every mistake we’ve made, and every hardship we’ve carried quietly.” Her words capture what makes Portledge special: a community where students are known, supported, and encouraged to pursue their passions with confidence.

DEAR PORTLEDGE COMMUNITY, Thank you for your generous support of Portledge School throughout the 2025–2026 academic year.

I am continually inspired by the commitment of our community to providing an exceptional experience for every student. Your support of the Portledge Fund strengthens our academic programs, enriches student life, and reinforces the values of Kindness, Honor, Purpose, and Respect that define our school.

As I write this, I am reminded of a sentiment I shared during the Class of 2026 Commencement: behind every graduate is a community that helped bring them to that moment—parents who encouraged them, teachers who inspired them, coaches who challenged them, and friends who stood beside them. The accomplishments of this remarkable class reflect the strength of that community and the opportunities made possible through your generosity. Your support helps students discover their passions, build resilience, develop character, and pursue their futures with confidence and curiosity.

This year, the Portledge Fund & Gala supported meaningful enhancements across campus, including improvements to the Black Box Theatre, expanded off-campus opportunities for our Jazz Band, a new athletics app for streamlined communication, a new scorer’s table in the Chen Center, and additional events that brought students, families, and faculty together. I have also enjoyed watching Lower School World Day continue to grow and evolve since my three children, now in college and the Upper School, first participated years ago. These experiences enrich our students’ lives in ways that extend far beyond the classroom.

We also launched our Strategic Plan, Forging Pathways to Excellence, a bold vision for the future of Portledge. Guided by innovation, emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence, and our community’s experiences, this plan ensures that our mission remains both enduring and forward-looking. None of this would be possible without your partnership and belief in our school.

MISSION Portledge School is an independent, prenursery through twelfth grade preparatory day school. The school’s coordinated sequential programs, beginning with the Reggio Emilia program in Early Childhood, provide a rigorous academic environment, preparing students to live responsible and productive lives. Dedicated teachers use small class size to deliver knowledge based on inquiry and inspired by a student-centered learning approach. Individual talents are nurtured through the arts, athletics, and a variety of community and travel programs that all emphasize the Portledge Pillars of Kindness, Honor, Purpose and Respect.

ENDOWMENT INFORMATION CAMPUS ENDOWMENTS $1,166,262 Portledge is blessed with an extraordinary campus. The beauty of the Portledge campus engenders a sense of pride and belonging that our students take with them when they leave. This endowment fund enables us to preserve, maintain and improve our beautiful buildings and grounds.

FACULTY ENDOWMENT $1,342,826 Our highly qualified teaching staff is the essential ingredient of a Portledge education.

To attract and retain top caliber professional educators, Portledge must compete with Long Island public and independent schools.

This endowment fund enables Portledge School to attract the best teachers.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT $624,833 Portledge School and the Board of Trustees have long held a commitment to offer financial aid to help foster a dynamic and diverse student body. Now more than ever, many qualified and talented applicants are in need of financial assistance. This endowment fund allows Portledge to continue to enroll deserving students whose talents will enrich the entire school.

ACORN ENDOWMENT FUNDS ANNE M. THOMAS MEMORIAL FUND $19,573 This fund celebrates the exceptional dedication and passion of its founder, Anne M. Thomas, and provides annual income to support the maintenance of the Anne M. Thomas Lower School.

THE JEAN CATTIER FOREIGN LANGUAGE FUND $67,650 Established in memory of one of Portledge’s founding trustees, this fund is intended to support the school’s foreign language faculty. Income from this endowment is used to support the professional growth of foreign language instructors.

THE DAISY HUGHES SCHOLARSHIP FUND $48,219 Established in 1995 in memory of the mother of Andrew Hughes ’88, income from this endowment is used to support the school’s general scholarship fund.

Named for Prescott Jennings, Jr. (History Department Head and Head of College Counseling 1974-1992; Trustee 1994-2004), income from this endowment supports the compensation for the sitting Chair of the History Department.

THE MARY F. JONATHAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND $58,885 Established by the family and friends of Mary F. Jonathan, founding Headmistress of Portledge School and past Headmistress of Miss Stoddart’s School, income from this endowment is used to support scholarship funding for a girl during her lower years at Portledge.

THE 1992 SENIOR CLASS FUND $51,818 Developed by the parents of the Class of ’92, income from this endowment is used to support college counseling services.

ALLISON P. HENRY STUDIO ART MEMORIAL FUND $96,813 Established in memory of Allison Henry who attended Portledge School from nursery through seventh grade and would have graduated with the Class of 2003, this fund commemorates Allison’s years at Portledge and her love of art by supporting the continued growth of the studio art program.

DR. CAROLYN BOVELL MEMORIAL FUND $58,768

PALAGONIA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP $321,137

Established in memory of Dr. Carolyn Bovell, to pay tribute to this extraordinary teacher and continue her dedicated efforts to help students improve their skills and expand their appreciation for good writing, income from this fund will support the teaching of writing in each school division by funding workshops, enhancing faculty training and awarding a prize in Dr. Bovell’s name to be given to a senior who achieves excellence in writing.

This fund supports an award presented annually at graduation to that member of the senior class who, throughout his or her career at Portledge, has best exemplified the character and achievement of Barbara Lisanne Ayers (Class of 1977) through profound devotion to learning together with a consistently high level of academic accomplishment.

Established by the Palagonia Family, the purpose of this fund is to subsidize the tuition of two student-athletes. This endowment serves to marry the family’s passion for athletics with their firm belief in the impact of a solid educational foundation on a child’s life.

THE ROBERT A. JOSLIN, JR. SCHOLARSHIP FUND $189,032 Established in 2006 in memory of Robert Joslin, father of Harrison ’17 and Olivia ’20, this fund guarantees full tuition assistance for a qualified student with financial need to attend Portledge School. In addition to support from individual gifts.

THE KERODEN ENDOWED FUND FOR FACULTY COMPENSATION $354,060 Established by an anonymous donor in honor of founder and former trustee William T. Dunn, Jr. (1965-1992), income from this endowment supports faculty salaries and benefits.

LEN AND CARYL SHAPIRO SCHOLARSHIP FUND $273,725 Established by Alumni Parents Caryl and Len Shapiro this fund was created to provide tuition assistance for a qualified student with financial need to attend Portledge School. This fund serves to recognize the importance of a quality independent school education and generously provides these funds to open that opportunity to all students regardless of financial background.

DAVID W. HOYLER FACULTY AWARD $4,405 This fund supports an award given annually at graduation to a member of the Portledge School faculty for outstanding dedication to students and exemplary commitment to teaching within and beyond the classroom.
