Assistant Professor of Practice

Helping all children learn Shaheen Munir-McHill leads the Special Educator Teaching License program, Oregon’s only undergraduate teacher preparation and licensure program in special education. She blends research with innovative classroom strategies to prepare teachers for 21st century schools. Munir-McHill believes all children can learn and gives her PSU students the tools to Engineering help them do it. students prepare

Assistant Professor of History and fellow of PSU’s Institute for Sustainable Solutions

Studying Humanities gives students a window into how humans understand, record, and share our experiences. By exploring disciplines such as English, philosophy and world languages, students learn to think critically and creatively and to communicate ideas effectively. Students in Arts & Letters build a solid career foundation out of collaborative, analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills.

The stories may someday help save them. The website, canopystory.org, grew out of McNeur’s history class on Portland’s Heritage Trees, which are protected for their size, age or historical or horticultural significance.

Associate Professor of Chemistry

Studying the natural sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science and mathematics prepare students to critically examine the physical world and make scientific breakthroughs and discoveries that will address the challenges of today and tomorrow. They’ll learn to question, research and experiment — with plenty of trial and error.

Art detective Tami Lasseter Clare uses her chemistry expertise to solve art mysteries in the Pacific Northwest. One of her first cases came from the Portland Art Museum. A secondcentury Han Chinese Dynasty Money Tree was shedding some of its delicate metal leaves.

The Money Tree is a bronze sculpture over four feet tall that was placed in a tomb to bring good Engineering luck to the dead.

She studies how communities recover from the damage and how we can better prepare for the next one. Her key message: “We never survive as individuals. Sustainable success How can an upstart company with an environmental and social conscience compete against big, profitable polluters? Professor Desirée Pacheco is finding the answers. She researches the barriers and opportunities new green businesses face when they try to break into a polluting industry, such as wind power in a field dominated by fossil fuels. Her recent work focuses on apparel, one of the most polluting industries in the world, second only to oil. It’s also known for poor, dangerous working conditions. She wants to know which clothing companies are trying to address those problems — and how.

HOW YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME: Listening to podcasts, sketching and going around the city.

FAVORITE THING TO DO IN PORTLAND: Take walks around the city. My favorite place to explore is the waterfront and across Portland’s many bridges.

YOUR FAVORITE CLASS AT PSU AND WHY: American Sign Language. I enjoyed learning the language and the culture that came with it and my professor was amazing.

WHERE YOU LOVE TO CURL UP WITH A BOOK ON CAMPUS: The 4th floor of the library, they have comfy chairs that feel very private.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE GOTTEN ABOUT GOING TO COLLEGE: Don’t be afraid to go for things that are out of your comfort zone!

FAVORITE PROFESSOR: Noah Dear. I took his Calc III class, and although his class was a heavy workload and fast paced, he was consistent and did his best to make sure we understood new concepts.

WHERE YOU LIVE WHILE IN SCHOOL AT PSU: I currently live in Woodburn, Oregon.

I chose to live at home rather than at PSU to save money and to enjoy any adventures along the way.

THOUGHTS ON THE RAIN IN PORTLAND: I love the rain in general, but being able to cozy up with tea while it rains outside is my favorite.

FAVORITE PROFESSOR: Amy Duncan, I took one of her Yoga classes last year and I was very hesitant but her teaching method allowed me to end up loving yoga.

GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR AT PSU: Having my name listed on the President’s list.

WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR MAJOR: Building on the fundamentals of math and reaching more complex concepts. What I appreciate about being an economics major is its applicability, especially in understanding politics.

FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND YOUR FREE TIME: Working out, volunteering back home and at school, and cruising around Portland.

I wanted to live in other Portland neighborhoods after having a dorm experience downtown. The light rail drops me off right on campus every morning.

HOW YOU KNEW PSU WAS RIGHT FOR YOU: Deciding where to go to college from 11,000 miles away is pretty daunting. PSU’s admissions representatives were always quick to get back to me, and demonstrated interest in me which made me feel I could belong here.

MAJOR: Business: Supply Chain & Logistics Management FAVORITE FOOD CART: Shawarma Spot HOW YOU MEET PEOPLE ON CAMPUS: Playing soccer, at the gym playing basketball, lifting or swimming, at the library or in classes. I’m also involved in the Black Student Union and Supply Chain Logistics Management Association.

FAVORITE CLUB: The Supply Chain Logistics Management Association brings a lot of students together who have the same sense of wanting to succeed. Alumni come back to speak with us and help us network and learn what to do and what not to do in our careers.

WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR MAJOR: I love learning about negotiation, problem solving and the forecasting aspect of it. I’ve done interviews with people at Boeing through the connections in my program and learned more about what I want to do when I graduate.

FAVORITE CLASS IN YOUR MAJOR: Documentary Production 1 and 2 with Dr. Pamela Minty. These production courses have been the most influential to me as an aspiring filmmaker because of the balance of hands-on workshops to learn equipment, portfolio building and peer feedback.

HOW YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME: A walk in Washington Park on a nice day.

Or the movies, the Hollywood Theater is my favorite.
