ABOUT US Portland Ovations is a nonprofit cultural organization based in Southern Maine dedicated to gathering communities to share in the power of live performance. Ovations connects artists and audiences both onstage and off — making the arts an integral part of community life. Our unique array of live performances for public and school audiences are curated to delight, inspire and educate. Venues used throughout greater Portland include historic and modern theaters, clubs, galleries, and classrooms — chosen carefully to ensure the best possible experience for both audiences and artists. Join us for a season of performances that span the traditional to the contemporary, the intimate to the spectacular, the popular to the unexpected.

OUR VISION To inspire a curious and imaginative community where the experience of the performing arts is a vital part of everyday life.

OUR MISSION

Portland Ovations propels the artistic, social, educational and economic wellbeing of communities through the power of the performing arts.

RACIAL EQUITY STATEMENT

At Ovations, we recognize that promoting racial equity and anti-racism in the arts and culture sector is essential to showcasing the brilliance and artistry of diverse and multicultural communities from around the globe. Our commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and access extends to all aspects of our operations, including governance, programming and community engagement. We aim to include all voices, stories and perspectives in our programs and inspire similar efforts in the Portland, Maine area, resulting in a more just and equitable society where everyone’s contributions are valued.

NEW WORK

Portland Stage is known for its role in cultivating new voices in theater and for creating a significant body of theatrical work that has gone on to success beyond our stage. By incubating new work and supporting writers, Portland Stage has established Maine as a place to launch original and compelling plays. Since its debut in 1990, the Little Festival of the Unexpected (LFU) has established a tradition of nurturing artists, invigorating audiences, and exploring new voices, visions, and forms of theater. Past LFU scripts include Almost, Maine (LFU 2003) and Papermaker (LFU 2014).

Playwright Benjamin Benne, 2022 Clauder Competition Grand Prize Winner for his play Manning, soon to be a Mainstage production. Benjamin’s play was selected to be a part of the 2023 Little Festival of the Unexpected, where it was performed for audiences.

EDUCATION

Education is central to Portland Stage’s mission. Vital education programs are offered in schools for students from pre-K through high school, and to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater for Kids storefront space. Portland Stage’s Education Programs provide over 14,000 student experiences each year. PLAY ME A STORY, presented by Portland Stage Theater for Kids, allows participants to enjoy dramatic readings of picture books, then participate in an interactive acting workshop with professional theater artists.

“The message I take from this zany play is that no matter how bleak the world may seem, muddling through, laughing at yourself, and celebrating small achievements is the best way to face your troubles...”

Sometimes, especially in the dead of winter, you need a good laugh. As we contend with short days and slippery sidewalks, The Play That Goes Wrong is an opportunity to forget your troubles and enjoy the insanity that ensues when a troupe of artists redoubles their efforts to seamlessly present The Murder at Haversham Manor, a 1920s murder mystery. 2 74

It takes a lot to get Wrong right. The precision and creativity required from the actors, run crew, creative team, and technical staff to mount this production has been monumental. As silly as this production seems from the outside, it has been remarkable to watch our band of collaborators discover how to keep you off guard while keeping the production moving forward. The message I take from this zany play is that no matter how bleak the world may seem, muddling through, laughing at yourself, and celebrating small achievements is the best way to face your troubles—it can’t get worse than this, or maybe it can….but at least we can find a way to enjoy the calamity of it all. Here’s to the healing power of a good laugh. Enjoy.

HENRY LEWIS, JONATHAN SAYER, & HENRY SHIELDS PLAYWRIGHTS

Henry Lewis

Jonathan Sayer

Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields met while training at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). All core members of Mischief Theatre, they had already worked in comedy together for several years before they started out as a writing team. The three’s first piece was The Play That Goes Wrong (winner – Best New Comedy – Olivier Awards and What’s On Stage Awards). The show started out on the London and Edinburgh fringe before touring the UK and internationally and then returning to the West End in September 2014, where it is still running. It’s also playing on Broadway and headed out on a US tour in 2018 and has been performed in over 20 other countries around the world. Peter Pan Goes Wrong was the trio’s second piece, opening in November 2014 for a UK tour before a hugely successful West End season in Christmas 2015. Henry, Henry, and Jonathan recently adapted the script of Peter Pan Goes Wrong for the BBC, which was filmed with the original West End cast and broadcast to rave reviews on New Year’s Eve. They were invited back to wreak more havoc at the BBC in 2017 with Christmas Carol Goes Wrong on BBC1. The Comedy About A Bank Robbery marks their third writing project as a trio and earned them another Olivier nomination. @mischiefcomedy • mischieftheatre.co.uk

PLAYNOTES PERSPECTIVES

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE DIRECTOR KEVIN R. FREE By: Jessi Stier

Directing and Dramaturgy Apprentice Jessi Stier sat down with Kevin R. Free, director of The Play That Goes Wrong to chat about this hilarious play. Jessi Stier (JS): This play has a lot of physical comedy. What has it been like to stage a piece with so many moving parts? Kevin R. Free (KRF): In general, theater has more moving parts than people think. For this play, I’ve had to study a bit more before rehearsal—for every ten things that I remember, I forget two! The part that has been really lovely and refreshing is the level of collaboration. I love when people have offers, I love when people want to try out different things, I love when everybody has an opinion about what a moment should look like or feel like. What’s clear to me about this play is that it was made by a group of collaborators who trusted each other, which I think is a great idea. So, leading this process has been really great because I was transparent—I said yes, I want all the offers—but I also understand that actors want someone to make a final decision, and I can do that, too. Overall, this has been an illustration of a process that I’ve always wanted to have. I think when you’re Black and queer, and you make a lot of work about how that marginalization affects yourself, people who are marginalized, and people who are not marginalized, the release of doing a show like this is really exciting. The catharsis comes from the idea that even if we’re marginalized, we’re still able to have fun and tell a story about having fun. JS: What are you most excited for audiences to see in this production? KRF: I think I’m most excited for audiences to experience a company of actors who lose control. I’m super excited for all the things that break and go wrong in this play, and for people to see that. We’re rehearsing it so that it’s controlled, we’re being safe, but I think one of the beautiful things about this play is that it is about things not going as planned, but people being joyful anyway, and that is delightful to see. So, the joy and the love of making theater is at the heart of this. I’m really excited for an audience to experience these eight people who love what they do, doing what they do in front of them.

CENTERSPREAD TOPICS THE PLAY’S THE THING By Julia Jennings

The theater has always loved talking about itself. Since the Renaissance, the staging of a play-within-a-play has been a popular device to examine theatrical work and close the gap between appearance and reality. The Play That Goes Wrong is no exception, cleverly employing this structure to create multiple levels of theatricality and fictionality. We, the audience, watch The Play That Goes Wrong actors portray the Murder at Haversham Manor actors. The play-within-a-play is a form of mise en abyme, a French term for placing an image inside of itself, like looking into two mirrors facing each other and seeing yourself infinitely repeated. The self-reflective nature of the play-within-a play has been embraced by the theater since The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd, in approximately 1587. There are several notable examples of the playwithin-a-play throughout theater history, serving several different ends. One of the most famous is the play-within-a-play in Hamlet, which serves Pictured: JP Guimont, Tavia Gilbert, Evan Thompson*, Scott Barrow*, Kim Ders*, Cristine McMurdo-Wallis* • Photo by Darren a similar function as the Setlow from the 2007 Portland Stage production of Noises Off nested play in The Spanish Tragedy—that of verifying a crime. In the famous scene, Hamlet watches Claudius watch the presented drama, hoping to see him react in a manner betraying his guilt. A play-within-a-play has also historically been used as entertainment for a wedding or other festive event, as seen in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and through the wedding masque in The Tempest.

The play-within-a-play is a form of metatheatricality, an artistic tool in which a play draws attention to the fact that it is a play. The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard and Six Characters in Search of an Author by Luigi Pirandello are examples of metatheatrical plays, as are many works by Bertolt Brecht and Samuel Beckett. Brecht and Beckett’s use of metatheatricality was political in nature, and meant to allow the audience to reflect on themselves. Metatheatrical work has become a popular element of modern drama, often invoking experimentation and stretching audience expectations regarding what theater can look like. The Play That Goes Wrong, while a lighthearted farce, still demonstrates many classic elements of the play-within-a-play, drawing audience attention to the precarious nature inherent to creating theater, while blurring Director Kevin R. Free during rehearsal for The Play That Goes the lines between the Wrong • Actors pictured: Front: Khalil LeSaldo*, Max Samuels*; Back: Dean Linnard*, Erica Murphy theatrical and the real world. As we watch the two levels of fictionality battle for prominence onstage, the play also offers insight and mockery not only to the genre of the whodunit, but also to the dynamic of a working theater company more generally. And so, in the context of the theatrical tradition of staging a play-within-aplay, The Play That Goes Wrong gets a lot of things right.

LAND & SLAVERY ACKNOWLEDGMENT We are creating theater on land that has been cared for by the Wabanaki. We honor their community and invite you to go to the Wabanaki Reach website to learn more about the Wabanaki culture, as well as about restorative justice and truth-telling that is necessary for healing. We encourage you to learn more about the peoples who cared for the land that you now reside on whether you’re from here in Portland or are visiting from away. For more information about the Wabanaki Confederacy, visit mainewabanakireach.org, and to find out whose land you are on, visit native-land.ca. We also want to acknowledge that the history of Maine is deeply connected to the institution of slavery in the United States, and that residents of Maine participated in both slavery and the transatlantic slave trade even after slavery was outlawed in the District of Maine. While it may be easy to think of Maine and more specifically Portland as a very White place, we recognize that this is simply not the case and we are working to dismantle these harmful ideas. We encourage our audiences to visit the Abyssinian Meeting House (learn more at abyssinianmeetinghouse.org) or the Eastern Cemetery here in Portland, and to explore scholarship on the subject, like Lives of Consequence by Patricia Q. Wall, to learn more about this oft-neglected part of Maine’s history. We recognize that the American Theater has also exploited, misrepresented, and excluded communities of Latine, Asian, Indigenous, and Middle Eastern descent for centuries. Portland Stage is recommitting to telling authentic stories from diverse backgrounds that all of our audiences can experience and enjoy.
