The bright white seagulls reflected the sun off a select lucky few underneath. On occasion, they’d swoop down, a targeted missile aiming for someone’s chips. Underneath, the rocky beach was mobbed, as it always seemed to be when the annual heatwave hit Britain. People of all different shapes, ages and genders swarmed the beach, harassed the ice cream van, placed their stripy pastel chairs down and with a rather over the top huff from the adults sunk into them as they gazed into the distance. Meanwhile, the children of these adults ran around in various lurid swimming costumes. The distant splashes and laughs from the sea were carried all across the beach. Broad men were widely entrusted with carrying everything single handedly from the car as the rest of his family deserted him to find “their spot” down past the cliffs.

The U/12 netball team were back at the Seymour leisure centre for their second game this year. After last week’s victory, the girls were all very excited. After a great warm up lead by Lily, the girls were fully focused and ready to go! On the team and representing PPS were Clara Howell, Lucy McHugh Tibbitts, Helena Soriano, Catherine Argentieri, Esther Osinaike, Razan Alghareeb and Lily Dawson

The PPS girls were off to a bit of a rough start, and the other team made a good run of passes to make a few shots on goal, but they were unsuccessful in their attempts. The PPS girls were a bit nervous, but they knew that they had the whole game to redeem themselves after a shaky start. After a few great passes and heroic interceptions made by Clara, the girls got the ball successfully to Lily and Esther who eventually scored to the delight of the PPS girls who all cheered loudly. This was heard throughout the sports hall! After this, the odds seemed in the oppositions favour, Lucy played great in GK position defending the opposition with the help of Razan who demonstrated some great catching and passing to get the ball down to the shooting third.

Once again, the ball made it to Esther and she made another goal, Hurray! Catherine and Helena played great on the wing, and once again got the ball to Lily and Esther who read each other well leading to another goal by Esther making 3 1. The game was almost over, and we thought we had a win in the bag but NBHC sadly made their way back into the game scoring 2 quick goals. The whistle blew, and time was up. The final score was a draw, but it was a great game. The girls enjoyed the challenge and I know they will come back stronger next time!!

U/15 Football Triangular Match vs Ibstock Place and Radnor House

On Thursday 22nd September Portland’s U15’s travelled to Roehampton to play in a three way 11 a side match against home side, Ibstock Place, and Radnor House. The first match featured PPS against Ibstock and Portland made a good start, dominating possession from the outset. In the first period, keeper Alex Parker wasn’t called into action at all, as Portland’s midfield duo of Ethan Smither and Todd Davis linked well with Sonny Shelton and Miles Sellens Flack on the right. However, PPS were not able to get many shots away, although Todd rattled the crossbar from thirty yards and had the keeper beaten.

In the second half the game became more open with Ibstock mounting a couple of attacks. It was Portland though, that created the best chances; Sonny and Miles both came close but could not break the deadlock. Lukas Amos was able to contribute in attack, winning some tackles and gaining ground on the left side. Towards the end of the match, Ethan was forced to withdraw due to injury, with Maxim Mydlar replacing him in midfield.

The first match finished 0 0, although Portland had produced the more attacking football and deserved to have scored. After a five minute rest they returned to the field to face Radnor. This time Portland made a slower start and were forced to defend from the start. Radnor passed the ball quickly and were able to keep possession. Every time Portland won the ball back, they seemed to linger on the ball and were closed down and disposed. Radnor took the lead after their striker latched onto a through ball and lobbed the out coming keeper. They doubled their lead shortly after, from a miss kicked goal kick.

After the break, Miles moved to the left wing and was able to score a tremendous goal following a one two with Lucas Amos, setting him away, behind the defence. Miles expertly slotted the ball past the on coming goalie, but the celebrations were short lived when Radnor almost immediately restored their lead. The match finished 3 1 to Radnor.

This was a good opportunity for Portland’s new players to show their ability and both Lucas and Todd made a very positive impact. Portland looked at their best when they passed quickly, but the attacking players were not given enough quality ball for much of the two games. This is an area that the boys can look to improve on over the coming weeks.

U13/14 Football vs North Bridge House

Canonbury

On a distinctly autumnal and at times wet afternoon at Regent’s Park, Portland’s Year 8 & 9’s faced North Bridge House Canonbury in an exciting encounter that ended 2 2. Portland started quite well, but it was clear from the outset that the North Bridge side included some strong players, particularly their captain, who made numerous runs into the Portland half. Some stern defending from Hazuki Kita kept the NBH attacks at bay, but Portland were unable to hold onto the ball in their opponent’s half. North Bridge took the lead from a wayward goal kick that picked out North Bridge’s captain whose shot goalkeeper Harrison Brudenell Turpie was unable to keep out the goal.

In the second half Portland began to mount some more meaningful attacks, with Humphrey Boland, in particular, proving a threat on the right side. The equaliser soon came when Humphrey was put through by Enzo Pochon and rounded the keeper to finish. This raised Portland’s morale considerably and soon after Humphrey was able to add a second to his tally, with a superbly finished shot from wide on the right, following a break down the right side.

North Bridge pushed hard for the equaliser, and it came with about ten minutes left to play, much to Portland’s disappointment. At this point North Bridge were back in the ascendency and the closing stages were a nervy affair. Dexter Culpin, playing in the centre of midfield, made an excellent contribution in the closing stages, working hard to get up and down the pitch.

In the end the boys were upset not to have pulled off the victory, but their come back in the second half was commendable. Improvements need to be made in the quality of their clearances and general passing, but the boys’ attitude and work rate was very good, on the whole.

U/12 Girls Football Fixture

PPS 4 (Lily, Bibi, Clara 2) Vs NBHC 4

On Tuesday afternoon, the U12 Girls Football team made their way to Regents Park to play their first competitive fixture against North Bridge House Canonbury School. The girls were nervous but having had a great start in Netball, they were confident in their ability to give the game their all. In the team for PPS we had, Clara Howell, Lucy McHugh Tibbitts, Helena Soriano, Esther Osinaike, Razan Alghareeb, Bibi Welch, Lily Dawson, Vie Zayichenko, Rosie Chow and Beatrice Boland.

PPS had an explosive start and once they found their feet and got into a good rhythm of play, they went on the attack and caught NBHC off guard to score their first goal. With the help of her team mates who got the ball through the defence and up the field Lily scored a fantastic goal to put us in the lead. Both Rosie and Clara were key players in the first half whose work rate was incredible, intercepting the ball to go back on the attack. Lily, Lucy, Esther, Razan, Vie and Beatrice did well in their positions contributing to the successful play up to Bibi who scored the second goal!! The cheers were loud from all the team!

In the second half of the game, after a team talk and a few changes to the squad positions, there was lots of energy on the pitch. Clara was on the attack once again with the help of the team, made a clear strike on goal to make it 3 nil. NBHC however managed to get back in the game bringing it back to 3 3 to the dismay of PPS who unfortunately gave away a penalty. NBHC were building confidence and went on to score a 4th goal putting us behind for the first time in the game. PPS were determined to put this right and from nowhere, Clara scored on the attack showing such skill to pull back another goal resulting in a draw at the final whistle to the relief of us all.

It was an extremely tense but exciting game but a very fair result. A huge well done to all those involved!!

U/16 Football vs Thames Christian College

On a beautiful 4G pitch at Falcon Park, Portland Place’s Senior football team were able to take apart Thames Christian College with a dominant 5 0 victory.

After a long journey to Falcon Park, the PPS students were all ready to kick start their fixtures. A mix of both Year 10 and 11s, captained by Jessy Fryer Jacobs, started off with a bang. Within the first minute of the game a slick phase of passing saw Lloyd Day slip past the College’s defence and blast the ball into the back of the net.

This was something that was continuous throughout the game. With Tom Hallam and Ethan Smither both controlling the middle of the field, Thames Christian College were chasing shadows as Jessy, Edwin Hounkanli and Kai Ibrahim were able to pop the ball easily between each other and crack open the defence.

It was captain, Jessy who capitalised from some fantastic build up play with Sid De Rozario and Teddy Faulkner starting the move from the back, pushing the ball into midfield and after cutting in from the right hand corner of the box, Jessy’s left boot wrapped round the ball and hit the top corner of the net. Going into the end of the half 2 0, Portland Place continued to attack at every moment until Jessy yet again was able to open up the defence and slotted another goal into the bottom corner.

Bringing in the half, a team talk of positive vibes saw Ethan being brought off for Sonny Shelton and what a brilliant change that turned out to be. Picking the ball up from just inside the opposition half, Sonny broke forward taking on a couple of defenders and with a call from Miles Sellens Flack, Sonny struck the ball with such power that it flew past the keeper who was left bolted to the ground. A screamer of a goal that could not be matched throughout the game. Already a call for Goal of the Season.

Sports report

With some strong defending from Roberto Hinton, Leo Newberry and Raiyan Izad, PPS became very difficult to break down and with some brilliant communication from Jessie Francis Baum, a clean sheet was inevitable for the first game of the season. Tom, who was later named Player of the Match, deserved the goal that he gained from a goal mouth scramble. Passing the ball through the defence, Thames were unable to completely clear the ball and Tom was able to strike the ball into the bottom of the net. A fantastic performance from all has given the students the confidence to go into the next fixture.

A source close to the squad said:

“It was a fantastic performance. From back to front, we dominated the game and even though there were some close calls, a clean sheet brought a smile to all. We have some areas to improve on but to start the season with a convincing win is a cracking way to begin”.

U14 Football Tournament against Ibstock Place & Radnor House

With a week gone by and the Ibstock tournament well behind them, the Portland Place School’s Under 14 team were able to redeem themselves as they took on both Radnor and Ibstock at Roehampton University. Arriving just after their opposition, teams were sussed out, eyes were met and chat was had as the Portland Place team were split into two and readied for the mini tournament ahead. With recruits coming in from a couple of the U13’s, the squad was bigger and better for it.

Portland Place 1’s were first up as they took on Radnor on Pitch 2. It was a nervy start from the squad who were unable to string a few passes together. But then the door was unlocked as Jake Gadney and Danny Maclean were able to open up the defence and allow Humphrey Boland to slip the ball in the bottom of the net past the diving keeper. This is where it all began to unravel for Radnor as the PPS team started to run their defence ragged. With Dexter Culpin, Hazuki Kita and Jake all pushing the defence further and further back with some slick passing, it was out wide where the 2nd goal came as Hazuki played the ball forward to Tec Hennebry who powered forward and with a low cross managed to deflect the ball off a defender and into the net. With half time flying by and a quick change being done, there was no let up from the onslaught from the Portland Place team. Shots were fired at the Radnor net, some on target and parried away, some being blocked and some just dribbling past the post. It was Dexter who was able to gain that final and elusive goal.

Portland Place 2’s were finally able to take the pitch, at the same time as Portland 1’s. This was a difficult issue mainly for Mr Steward who had to have eyes everywhere to make sure that there was success from both squads and there was. With the Portland 2’s playing Radnor, it was all out attack from the start. After watching their teammates take the Radnor defence apart there was an immediate effect from

Sports report

Danny who managed to take on two defenders and power a shot into the TOP BINS!!! From minute one it was all out attack, and this was shown by defender Max Coombe driving forward. As the defender drew players into his Rio Ferdinand type run, he let rip and smashed a right footed shot past the by standing goalkeeper. The celebration imitated Sergio Aguero as he ran an extra lap of the pitch, arm in the air and screaming at the top of his voice. A lot of possession brought more attacks and with this more goals. Spike Culpin was the main catalyst of the Radnor downfall as he was able to grab a brace of goals for himself before his brother Dexter was able to fling a foot at a cross and give PPS at 5 0 lead going into the final moments. Rafer Moge was not to be outdone as his silky footwork took him through the defensive gate and hit the back of the net with a right foot screamer.

Whilst this was going on Mr Steward’s back of the head eyes were able to see the classic match that was against Ibstock 2’s. With the Ibstock teacher refereeing the match it was seen as one of the best 0 0 draws that we have seen in this fixture. Both teams played attacking football, both passing through the midfield and setting up a number of chances. With Rocky Mengers in goal for the PPS team, he was on fire palming a number of chances past the post and kept a nail biting game to 0 0. As the games started to pile up and the intensity started to drop, PPS 1 were unable to keep up their undefeated streak as they were unlucky to let in a final second goal to lose 3 2 against Ibstock A’s. With Max Dawson and Felix Fraser both holding the defence Humphrey and Jake were the goal scorers who managed to keep PPS flying at the top. Both teams yet again were pushing each other back and some of the attacks worried each defence but it was not meant to be for the PPS squad who were unable to hold out. The score being 2 2 with the final play of the game a thrown in, allowing the Ibstock attacker to break into space and fire a shot into the goal. A heart breaking goal that threw a number of the PPS players to the floor in despair.

The final few games came along and with the sun falling behind the clouds the big game was the two Portland Place squads firing off against each other. The rivalry was second to none, teams were picked, ends were chosen, and the referee was shaking in his boots. Sides came from the opposite end of the field just to watch the two top teams in the tournament battle against each other. Both teams shown no mercy as tackles rained down on every player and shots were struck towards each net. It was an even game with some slick passing between them. Dexter and Rafer opened up the opposing PPS defence but some fantastic goalkeeping by Tec kept the score at 0 0. With tensions beginning to grow and the game coming to a close, a 0 0 draw seemed to be the only outcome but a mistake from PPS Pinks, saw Max C

attack the goal, laying into on a plate for Danny to hit a clean shot into the bottom corner. The crowd and players erupted, noise could be heard by the changing rooms and now the game began to open up. With the PPS Yellows now on all out attack it was inevitable that there was going to be a goal. As time was running out and chances were being thrown away it was a fantastic move by Spike and Humphrey that saw them break through and fire a shot past Rocky in the goal. With Ned Harwood and Felix entering the field, the game clearly was meant for attacking. Breaking the line, it was down to Spike to push the ball past Rocky to make the score 2 1. The referee had the whistle in his mouth but a tackle from Max D saw the Yellows manage to burst through an open defence and see Danny fire the ball into the net!!!! A fantastic tournament came to an end and what a way to finish with a great match between PPS Pinks and Yellows.
