e were clearing out the attic on the third floor ofP(7R77.\.\D A laoazine’s Congress Street office w hen we found it - the swankest, faux-velvetiest, ickiest orphaned reclining TV chair ewer left behind by a former occupant.

Our neighbors certainly didn't want it (we begged them). No staff member would have anything to do with it.

So we put it on the sidewalk and praved someone would take it.

It took about 10 minutes. Looking through our plate glass window on the second floor, we saw a voting woman standing there considering, like a bird at a feeder.

Then a few more arrived.

Thev pointed at it, walked around it a few times. f inally, at the top of Forest Ax enue, thev held a meeting about it. Just take it. we thought. I'irst thought, best thought.

But thev did something much better.

They w hipped out sprav cans, videocameras, brushes, palette knives, and all of a sudden a crowd gathered on the street as tliev turned our road-kill remnant of a Barkalounger into instant art.

Onlookers clapped and cheered.

It turned out the artists were prospective Maine College of Art students, and their collective vision was to paint a Marguerite Sterian-like underworld figure silting on the chair. In all, at least 1,000 people took in the show .

The next morning we were sad to see the chair gone but then found it in the gallerv window of the college - on the other side of the glass now, valuable, intriguing, stopped in time.

A citv proclamation alone doesn’t create an arts district. Neither do the State Theatre, Starbucks, or the Starlite Cafe.

n bcbruarv 1989. Tim Rins stood in hi.s bathrobe in his bare feet in the snow watching his big beautiful Victorian farmhouse on the outskirts oi Bangor burn dow n.

"The police had Io restrain me. Neighbors were out there. It was like a party." he savs of the night fire. "Certainly 1 was on camera. I w as not conscious of the irony of that."

“It blew me out to Vancouver. I reassessed mv life. I realized that mv greatest loves w ere w riting and the movies, so 1 sold mv real estate companv and headed west."

“I w as completely reduced to zero by the flames. Anything was possible." But Rhvs was a bit angn w ith himself.

“The house fire became a sv mho) of how mv life was screwed up. 1 was out of control. I was a pack rat. Now mv house, and all the things I treasured, were gone."

"But there’s one place in Maine I kept, a camp I love on Manhanock Pond. I spend a w eek a vear there." he says.

Next, Panay ision traded its huge cameras for ad space. More equipment came from f ilm Labs. 1 knew I wasn’t a rich guv, so 1 had to come up w ith the money myself."

Well, not exactly. “There’s a bar in the movie and from day one I imagined it as Three Dollar Dewey 's. But you have to get permission for those things. So we called the owners up. Nice couple, but they didn't let us do it. In the end we called it Dewey ’s, and it’s got the old picnic tables that 1 remember from the old place on bore Street."

n 1981, Phil Sirois watched the National Geographic special on Rwandan mountain gorillas that catapulted the late Dr. Dian Dissey and her Karisoki Research Centre into international celebrity. This was way back before the gorillas even had am mist.

The next morning, while the rest ol the world discussed the show over morning coffee, Sirois sprang into action.

Animals as sort of a night caretaker, so I thought. AVIw not here?'

"I did a documentary on the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals and got it on Cablevision in 1984.”

When viewers learned the society was a private concern based on a single animal lover's early 20tli centurv endowment “to protect trollcv car horses in Portland," thev were enthusiastic, Sirois savs. I Ie brought his viewers out to the \ ISSPA complex "across the street from the W indham prison," featured the creatures as sentient beings, told some of their individual stories, and explained another extraordinary aspect of the society. "' t hey do not put animals to sleep," he savs, "something mam Mainer’s don’t understand." except to relieve terminal pain.

Ills audience was charmed — and hooked. So w ere backers from W estbrook C2nblc to the state of Maine.

"I thought. Jeez, this is a prettv good wax to make a living!” I worked more with W estbrook Cable vision, moved ox er to Maine Video, and then in 1987 I heard W arner Brothers was beginning production of C-oriHas in the Mist. I’d dreamed of going there so long and didn’t want to be jumping on their coattails, so I took every penny I had (ronghlv S10.000) and flew to Africa for six weeks."

Prom his base camp on the Dark Continent, Sirois visited the rarefied 12,000foot-high Virunga Mountains “10 to I 2 times" and raced back w ith documentary footage of the gorillas, called "Xgagi" in their home environs. “I had help from W'PXT, MPBX. Shop n Saxe. Hew ins Traxcl, and Ecology House," he savs.

W'PXT lent editing facilities and air time and "gave me advice on how to approach Shop ‘n Saxe in New York."

"All 1 know," Sirois savs, “was that the media person was in Xew York.”

The resulting PBS documentary , "Xgagi: Quest for Snry ival.” was considered "remarkable" by television executix es who were impressed by his dramatic, eveballto-eveball photographs' of the gorillas on the lush slopes, and all of a sudden Sirois found himself on the cover of IM Week.

"Only two Mainers have made the cover." he laughs. "Me and Tim Sample.”

'1 wo months later, in 1990, Sirois went back to Africa, but in mid production w hile he was stateside preparing for another trip back, "Rwanda went into civil war.

I had all sorts of new footage but couldn’t finish it w ithout another hook.

“So I found a guv named Carl Akelcv. a taxidermist who developed the diarama concept in museums in 1890. I le sails to Africa on safari to get animals for these exhibits” and was astonished to look individual species dead in the exes instead of watching them lap water from dustv mirrors in Manhattan.

"A leopard attacks him, and he kills him w ith his bare hands," savs Sirois, who is so close to Akelcv s character that he sometimes uses the present tense w hen speaking about him.

“W hen he returns, he creates what we now know as Akelevs African 1 tail in the American Museum of Natural 1 listorv in Central Park West.” 'I hen, in 1921. “he goes back to Africa and shoots fix e mountain gorillas. I Ie shot a female and she rolled clown a hill and knocked him down.” W'ith Akelcv down, his native porters panicked. "Thex speared a four-vearold babx." and just as Akelex was pulling himself up from under one dead gorilla, “he found himself inches from the babx gorilla as the light went out of his exes.”

At that moment, "he experienced a change of heart, a metanoia," Sirois saxs, or a plot point, as (hex sax' at film school.

N" ow desperate to keep animals alive in their native habitats, Akelex' Iixed among the sexen volcanoes where the gorillas lixcd. including the Bwindi Impenetrable bores! in Uganda. I lis footsteps disappeared in the jungle.

“And then he came back" to civilization and developed the famous Akelex Pancake Camera to preserxe living animals in motion, the same camera used to shoot Xamikol the \orlh and ironicallx, King Kong." I he world watched as lie traveled to King Leopold of Belgium to create a sanctuarv that would become the world's first national park, in Kenva, in 1926.

"Akelcv was buried in the spot near the Rw andan volcanoes that he's w ritten was the most beautiful he s ever seen," savs Sirois, and as the vears passed became the stulf of legend, like the polar explorers Shackleton or Robert Scott.

But who is the WPA artist who painted them?

he Portland Post Office on forest Avenue, for all its reliability and resistance to rain, snow, and sleet, has for 60 s ears been the seat of a 4 1 ■■■little mysterv that during fleeting moments in our lives catches hold of us as we enter the main foyer and sense a momentary sparkle of waves, a noumenal flash of surf, the storm-tossed tops of pines, all silent, and all frozen forever on either

in a machine shop in Worcester, Massachusetts, while studying at the Worcester Art Museum. Mattson became a proud American citizen in 1913, and in 1916 moved to the famed artist’s colons- in Woodstock, New York, where he lived the rest of his life.

Mattson’s career coincided with the Roaring Tw enties and the Great Depression. Despite this he earned a long list of laurels, including prizes and medals from the Chicago Art Institute (1931), the Corcoran Callers- in Washington (1934), and the prestigious Carnegie International Exibition in Pittsburg (1935). Bv 1937 his work hung in museums from St. Louis to Boston, and one Mattson landscape hung on exhibit in FDR’s White House.

Almost all of these w ere seascapes, paintings of wave-w racked coasts and stormswept sistas. For these, Mattson was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1933 and returned to Europe to paint the w ild coasts of Ireland, Scotland, and Sw eden. "He knows the sea, and the windshills, does Henn Elias Mattson,’’ wrote the Portland Sunday Telegram.

Other storms were brewing back in the United States. While Mattson was in Europe, in 1933-34 the WPA, w racked nationally by criticism for its “MakeWork” projects, began the controversial construction of the new Portland Post Office on Forest Asenue, a sast, $2.5 million project that destroyed an entire Basside neighborhood and snarled up trolley s and traffic for oser a s ear.

The huge complex — third largest in New England — had a portion of its construction funds set aside for new public art.

But to ss hour would the honor go?

Wars- officials of the Treasury Department Section of Fine Arts, ss hich os ersass the WPA art program in federal buildings, never quite trusted New Deal artists, mans of whom they suspected of being closet Lefties, or worse. (And sometimes w ith good cause: Rockwell Kent, in his 1937 WPz\ mural for the Washington, D.C., post office. "The Delivers- of Mail in the Tropics," cleserls painted in a message — in an obscure Eskimo dialect — urging the Puerto Ricans to res-olt.)

But eagle-eyed Treasury officials judged Mattson to be safe (his work, after all, adorned the White House), and "He was commissioned to do the Portland Post Office,” reported the Sunday Telegram, "because his work, especialls’ his marines (seascapes), hase been in ssmpaths with

the Maine ‘theme.’”

Mattson quietly kept his politics to himself, and began work on the first of the Portland canvases in Woodstock, NY, in June 1936. he two huge scrolls were shipped to Portland and mounted on the walls on Saturday, November 6, 1937, with Mattson, the Portland Postmaster, and an eager Portland Sunday Telegram reporter in attendance.

Mattson’s first canvas, “The Maine Coast,” was mounted on the north wall “Worked with the bold colors of a Summer morning,” wrote the Telegram, "... a sweep of blue-white sea, sloshing down upon gray-green rocks, shading to almost black as the rising land curves up from the surging tide. /\nd he did not forget the ubiquitous Maine sea gull; five of the graceful birds wheel in the sky between the shore rocks and the incoming hill of blue water...”

Idle south mural featured inland Maine, “Its dominant feature a wind-tossed pine, its green top leaning away before a gale which sweeps the hillside. Nearby are two smaller pines, and ... a half-dozen weather-beaten conifers fight for precarious life.

That too, is Maine.”

Neither painting depicted a particular place. “1 do not illustrate” Mattson told the Telegram.

Helen C. Donahue, Portland’s first female Postmaster, greeted the murals with enthusiasm, and “expressed the hope Saturdav that all art lovers would make it a point to drop in and inspect the work,” wrote the Telegram.

Art critics or not, Portlanders took to the murals without controversy, as some of the very first New Deal art to be mounted in all of Maine. That same month in the Westbrook Post Office, Maine native Waldo Pierce unveiled his mural " Summer Hogging Scene In Maine,” and doughty Downeastcrs, who liked their pictures to tell a story, quietly embraced both paintings as new neighbors.

Portland's mural was the only WPA Post Office art Mattson ever painted, and he proudly listed it in his entry in Who’s Who In American Art until his death in Woodstock, New York, in 1971, at age 84.

Time has been kind to the murals, still clean and vibrant in their original frames.

But today huge stamp machines restrict the view and Wanted Posters now fill the walls around them, pictures from a very different world.

ell, not exactly. I mean she wasn’t exactly a Brussian. But Alice Shaw (1913-1994) was one of the most polished watercolorists of her day, a student of Alexander Bower, and one of the founding members of the Haylofters (see photo, left), a refreshing (and far more female) counterpoint to the sometimes stodgy Prussians, many of whom were white-collar professionals such as architects John Calvin Stevens and Frederick Thompson; industrialist and boilermaker czar George Morse; and Frederick J. Isley, engineer for Cumberland County Power and Light.

Athletic (she and her sister Jane were Maine state doubles tennis champions from 19321935), resourceful (she put herself through the Portland School of Fine & Applied Art, now MECCA) and lovely- in many photos she is reminiscent of a young Patricia Neal in The Fountainhead - Alice Shaw signaled a sea change in the local art scene. “For a young girl in those days,” says son Bradford Kirkpatrick, 48. “she was really quite amazing.”

Determined to be an artist, the indom-itable Shaw, whose wealthy parents lost everything in the Depression - “they had a big home in the West End (40 Bowdoin Street), a chauffeur, maids, everything,” says Kirkpatrick, “walked from our little fannhouse on Mitchell Road in Cape Elizabeth into town, across the old bridge, and into Portland and back every’ day.”

"They grew to be great friends," Kirkpatrick says. "I Ie came to her w edding and gave one of his nicest watercolors to mv mom and clad (retired banker Donald B. Kirkpatrick).

At their best, her watercolors arc almost I lopperesque (see “Portland I lead Light," above), bringing ns views of the Cape Elizabeth and South Portland shoreline, farmhouses anil orchards in Cape Elizabeth. Cliff I louse Rocks, Stroudwater, Danforth Cove, Deering Oaks, Spurwink Earm, and Creat East Like.

In art school she won the Baxter Scholarship and made her mark eariv with a series of shows which would culminate w ith a oneperson show in 1943 at the Portland Society of Art (now the Portland .Museum of Art).

And because she was prolific, she accumulated a body of work that w ill assure her reputation (she appears in Who Was Who In American Ari. Biographies of American Artists Active from 1S ( JS-I (M~, was a founding member and leader of The I lavloft Society, nicknamed “ I he 1 lavlofters” and was elected a member ofThe Rational Association of \\ omen Painters R Sculptors) in the vears to come.

World War 11 darkened the outings, though, and Alice worked at the Marine I lospital on Martin’s Point. “She did a lot of I work w ith the Red Cross." savs Kirkpatrick, “and won praise for hand-lettering many area wartime awards and certificates," certainly drudge work for someone with her gifts.

W hen her future husband came back from sen ice in the w ar, she iell in lor e, married, and watched no doubt with irons as her art career slid further onto the back burner until it all but stopped entirely.

quiet, uneventful Maine mid-winter dav, just two weeks before Christmas.

Mark llaltof has left his home on Cottage Farm Road in Cape Elizabeth to paint at his studio on Congress street in Portland when, BANG! - a verv big bang - his house just blows to pieces.

Bv incredible hick, neither his wife. Susan, nor his two-year old daughter. Jeannette, arc at home. Susan, three months pregnant, is in Auburn at a sales meeting for Channel S and Jeannette, w ho until the w eek before has been taken care of in her home, is at a neighbor's.

All ol I laltofs work-hundreds of drawings, sketches, and paintings — plus all the family's possessions, disappear in an instant.

The explosion was caused by crews digging in the street w ho struck an old gas main that was connected to the Haltof

house.Thc house filled w ith gas from the attic dow n and when the explosion occured. presumably in the basement when the furnace clicked on. it was so great there was no fire, "because there was nothing left to burn. Everything had disintegrated." a fireman says afterwards.

“I realized that none of it. well, not much of it, really mattered. Nobods' w as hurt ... There were so many upsides to what it could bas e been that the material losses had to be insignificant.

"I lost a number of paintings I was obviously attached to because I kept them at home. The one of the Bean boots tossed on the carpet (see photo, right) is one I miss; 1 could never bring mvself to sell that one and it lived in ms home for sears.”

In a wax; though, it was an intellectuailv fascinating problem, a breathtaking fresh start. With future work, would I laltof be the same artist or cm entirely new one?

New works on display through September 24 at Portland’s Erost Gulls Gallen on 411 Gongress Street as part of a one-man show, “Recent Paintings, Maine Landscapes and Still Life,” prose that the latter is true.

"It's amazing how sou avoid doing something that’s even similar because the painting is sitting there, so bas ing it gone sort of takes it out and it's a mcmors'. ’t on can do other things that are close but aren't exactls the same and sou see that sou progrcssis cls change. I las ing the painting around is in a sense stifling to me. I like to base the work go because then 1 can start something else."

I hiltof has a history of w elcoming change.

After grow ing up in Northeastern New Jersey, he moved to Fawtte, Iowa, where he studied fine arts at Upper Iowa Universil\. Then he chose Manhattan, where his BFA vaulted him to a posit ion as one of New Y ork’s youngest ad agency art directors, with nights and weekends spent taking classes at The Art Students I .eague.

“It was an ideal lite,” he sass now. “ I was in absolutely the s en best place at the vers best time.”

The New Davids...

Spectacular Two months ago Dat id's relocated Io Monument Square, something of a cotip for the city, which has been aggrcssivelv seeking the return ot quality businesses to its downtown heart. And for owner-chef David Turin, the change seems to be paying off.

Dat id’s starts its diners with a variation on the bread-and-olive-oil theme.

A waitress whisks together a plate of olive oil, Italian herbs and Parmesan cheese at the table, then presents another plate of garlic bread knots to accompany it.

For appetizers, my guest chose the crispy packets of herbed goal cheese in filo served with frizzled leeks and grilled vegetables (S5.95). 'I he plate is colorful as well as satisfying, with a substantial stuffing of cheese and plenty of grilled vegetables including red. green, and vellow peppers and summer squash.

I selected lobster, scallop and sweet potato cakes (S6) with red pepper and lobster sauce and served with a rich assortment of fresh greens and julienned vegetables. Both appetizers could have satisfied as light entrees.

'Ilie dinners include herb-crusted haddock with Maine shrimp & a white wine butter sauce (SI 5.95), Pepparadella pasta, lobster, scallop. shrimp, and seafood essence (S18.5O); Sliitake

mushroom ravioli, exotic mushrooms, Madeira mushroom cream, and w ilted spinach (SI 5); and David’s signature dish, pepper-encrusted rare tuna with sesame soba noodles and sesame dipping sauce (S19.25).

I chose the tuna and am glad I did.

The tuna is delicately encrusted in pepper and pan-seared in sesame and grape seed oil. It is then fanned on lop of the soba noodles, pyramid style, alongside asparagus and topping of frizzled leeks. The dish is finally drizzled and served w ith wasabi, pickled ginger, and sesame dipping sauce.

Mv guest chose Rack of Limb with Garlic and Herbs (SI 1/S22). T he half portion prosed to be a more than ample opportunity to relish a tender and succulent lamb, with plenty of accompanying vegetables, that would be hard to surpass in quality or quantity.

The new David’s has a strong 1920s feeling of France to it, with its great bar, huge array of spirits and liqueurs, a bar-aproned wait staff and original mosaic floor of tiny marble tiles.

We lingered and tried a Europcanstv Ie dessert of blue cheese with fruit and bread and a choice of three brands of port ($6.95) as well as a rich portion of cannoli sluffed with ricotta cheese w hite chocolate served with the shell, still wannfSd). Truly a spec1)11 tacular meal.

ack in the 1920s... the trip from [our] home in Inglewood, New Jersey, to Kennebunkport w'as a two-day journey. ‘We came up in two cars, one loaded with mv mother and the family, another with the maids, the chauffeur and his family. The trip took so long that we stopped the first night in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.’ [We] stayed in Kennebunkport from June until Libor Day. ‘My father was a broker on Wall Street, and every weekend he (along with many other fathers), would take the train up from New York,T/ie Heir Harbor Express, l ie would arrive 7 o’clock on Saturday morning and then leave Sunday night.’

“Summer on Cape Arundel was a time for friends and easy living. Many neighboring summer cottage residents were friends or relatives from New Jersey. '1 hese were professional people: publishers, steamship company owners, manufacturers. Each family had its summer home, and each summer home had a history.”

Sounds like a passage from Booth Tarkington’s Mirthful Haven, doesn't it? But these are the very words William Scarborough used a few years ago to tell Portland Newspapers writer David Bond about Point o’ View, the nine-bedroom Tudor summer cottage he and his family have lived in and loved since first moving here in 1918 in a story praising state-ofthe-art renovations made to create a gallery kitchen (skylight. Subzero refrigerator, and a glass door opening up to a new side porch with stunning views of the neighboring Bush estate) as well as new 220-amp electrical service and other improvements from its stone foundation to its eaves.

Also included was a carriage house with “accommodations for four horses, two or more carriages, etc. Stable and laundry connected with cottage by bell call service. Cemented cellar under cottage, also cemented bottom under piazza floors, thus preventing any possible unhealthful odors, sometimes caused by continued damp earth, a feature often overlooked when perfection in sanitary conditions is sought.”

But it was the majestic 200 feet of ocean frontage (only the Wandby had a better view, the locals joke), more than these scientific advancements, that resulted in the property being written up in Scientific American soon after construction was complete.

In time, neighbors such as novelist Kenneth Roberts (immediately behind them) and radio czar Atwater Kent (a few houses away, in vv hat is now the stone rectory at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church) joined the enclave. But from the beginning, the Scarboroughs w ere at the center of it all.

“It was a whole different ball of wax back then. I was just a teeny little girl," says Betsey Scarborough, William's wife. “Below the house at water’s edge we loved the rocks and little tidepools wc had picnics in.”

I .ike virtually all of their neighbors. “We were members of the River Club and loved the tennis and sailing.” They raced President Bush and his mother, Dorothy Walker Bush, in identical “River Club boats.” 2 Lfoot Alden one-design sailboats purchased exclusively for the club. “Ours was the Sand Piper." she says.

Wlion World War II darkened the coastline, “We all had black canvas window shades to hide our lights from Cerman submarines. We had a more pleasant color on the insides. There were wooden lookout towers in the area that were patrolled mostly by volunteers looking for lights on the horizon and they weren’t kiddilW around.”

“Who wants to be a model?” she asks.

“Who wants to w ear beautiful clothes from Porteous?" Mrs. Galook’s shoes are the color of candv canes. 1 ler glasses are shaped like a cat’s eves.

"Sit up straight.” she pinched Amanda’s back. "Models don’t slump."

Mrs. Galook savs. “’I her don’t squeal like pigs.”
