Wearing solid gold Turk’s Head jewelry dawned on me when 1 saw my son’s nylon string bracelet of the same design. Perfecting the idea, including drawing our own wire to the necessary specifications, was a long and involved process, and became a success only after a period of refinement. This very old design dates back to illustrations by Leonardo da Vinci, and I have found cartings in many forms, including wood, ivory and stone, but to the best of my knowledge, we were tire first to achieve tills apparent endless weave in solid gold. Dozier Bell’s paintings breathe in cat’s paws, splash gulls out at sea when nobody’s looking, capture

with bombsight precision the black center of summer.

The black mass at the center of Italo Scanga’s painting breathes with the stone lungs of the 1866 Portland Fire. It echoes postcard celebrations of the event, back when J. B. Brown’s sugar refinery caught fire and all of the city smelled like a Baked Alaska, a tragedy exceeded only by the Halifax explosion. This was explained to me by a Nova Scotia cab driver last summer after a visit on the Scotia Prince.

He’d had relatives in it. Hands and arms flying for miles away from the nitro-glycerine ship. So what does this have to do with contemporary art?

Pop artist Robert Indiana was at the Gleason-Portland opening, which included art luminaries from all over the state. Founded by Dennis and Martha Gleason, the gallery is located at the same sight that John Payson used for his Hobe Sound Galleries North a few years ago.

Other artists represented include Eric Hopkins, Fred Lynch, Joe Nicoletti, Johnnie Ross, Richard Wilson, Tad Beck, Mark Wethli, Greg Parker, Tom Higgins, Sandra Quinn, and Christopher Huntington.

he Old Port seems less like a section of a city I now inhabit and more like a place I once lived in and moved away from. Exchange Street was my bailiwick in the early eighties; I worked in a number of its shops and restaurants and did most of my socializing there, too. I was just out of college. My roommate and I worked across the street from each other, and at five we’d lock up shop (we had keys, discounts and slave wages—life was good) and charge home to our third floor, $250-per-month garret to change and head back out.

The Old Port Tavern was “the” place to go, with the pre-sprawl Seamen’s Club the premiere beer joint in town (this was prior to boutique brews). There was the Cafe Domus, the Leather Bench, Mr. T’s sandwich shop, twin Bowl and Boards, the Old Port Deli (where a shop girl could get a half sandwich to sustain her until her nightly bowl of gruel), the Salvation Army Store, and Gardner’s/34 Exchange.

These thoughts flickerthrough the windows of Rack ‘N’ Roll on Fore Street as my friend Joyce thrashes me for the third game in a row at pool. The radio plays an insidious stream of Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Heart, and Steve Miller. (Didn’t we hate these bands back then? Can’t they go away?) I watch shops close. Are those women rushing home to some two-bit room in a bad part of town so they can hurry back to Dewey’s or Granny’s or Gritty’s? That once might’ve been me, but not tonight. Instead, we hie on over to Katahdin where Gloria Frost will pouryou the driest, iciest martini served with jumbo olives and enough sardonic wit to snap you back into the present. ■ —Elizabeth Peavey

Naturally, Maine's section of the King’s Highway has evolved since it was conceived in 1653. It has been straightened in the ensuing years, and the deep, mud-filled ruts have been polished with asphalt. “With the coming of the automobile man could travel beyond what he knew,” says Peter Bachelor, who is writing a history of the highway. “It was the first road in the state to get people from one place to another.” From that, Bachelor continues, stage lines grew, restaurants and hotels appeared, along with a whole series of other services. Most of the structures that lined the original highway have fallen, replaced by strip malls and other buildings.

But do not despair, ye lovers of things past. Maine’s 527 miles of Route 1 still abound with treasures of past times, waiting for a finder. The highway has always been an antiques haven.

Much comes to market from the vast New England hinterland, from old farmhouses and sea captains’ homes. This article will help you root out many of these unique antique shops. It will also guide you to some of the other interesting places: factory outlets, secret societies, old buildings, scenic spots, obscure curses, and much more.

ne summer morning about 250 years ago, a traveler on the King’s Highway saw a golden spark in the lifting mist on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River. He brought his horse to canter and scanned the water. Suddenly, a gilded barge emerged from the fog, catching the low sun rising from the

east. Twelve black slaves rowed the barge. On deck, a white man shaded his eyes with his hand, searching the waters while the barge pushed toward the sea and was gone. The King’s Highway was nearly a century old when Sir William Pepperell glided along the Piscataqua, in his barge powered by 12 Nubian oarsmen.

oday, modern submarines built at Kittery’s Portsmouth Naval Shipyard have replaced William Pepperell’s golden barge and John Paul Jones's ship Ranger, which was built here. How things have changed. But the most dramatic recent changes in Kittery’s landscape have occurred along the King’s Highway over the last decade.

“Many of the old summer cottages and cabins that lined the road are gone,” remarks Marcia Beverly, speaking of Route 1 in Kittery. “A few years ago, the last of the old-fashioned gas

stations was ripped out.” Farmland and homes have also yielded to development along this part of the King’s Highway.

In spite of this, residents don’t complain too much about the emergence of Kittery’s “miracle mile.” It has become an outlet center, rivaling the regional old timers, North Conway, NH, and Freeport. Since the first mall moved in just seven years ago, eleven others have followed.

In all, there are 115 outlet stores in Kittery. Within the malls, you will find stores like Brooks Brothers, Liz Claiborn, Lennox China, Timberland, Guess, Levis, Converse, Ralph Lauren, Bass, Dexter Shoe, and 100+ more shops. New Englanders come by the busloads, pulled by the genetic urge to buy good things cheaply.

If you don’t plan to venture as far as L.L. Bean in Freeport, check out the Kittery Trading Post. For over 50 years, the Trading Post has sold outdoor sporting goods. You will find guns, archery equipment, fishing gear, canoes, and snowshoes, along with men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry, Maine-made gifts and dog-training equipment. They also sell scents to attract just about any game you want to shoot. Just sprinkle a little in your front yard and enjoy the hunt without leaving the breakfast table.

The smell of fresh flowers in the garden outside Bell Farm Antiques follows you into the store, giving new life to the old things inside. It is a selective group shop with an artful layout of country furniture, silver, paintings, china, early glass, and primitives. Bell Farm has a distinctive Victorian twist. Stephen Leblanc bought the barn in 1989 and immediately set about to change it in “a big way.” Although Leblanc caters to decorators, the antique layperson and the aficionado will also be enthralled.

There are fine examples of early coin silverware, export china, Staffordshire figurines, and other miscellany laid out neatly in glass cases.

peer as an oceanic walkway. It has benches at strategic spots with wild roses and exotic, imported hardwoods growing in the rocky crags along the walk. Ogunquit means “Beautiful place by the sea” in Algonquin, but in this case it is an understatement.

Barnacle Billy’s is the shellfish lovers’ paradise here, with lovely views of the tuna and lobster fishing fleets and the happy sound of raucous shucking as lobster carcasses and clams head out to the dumpster under the stars.

Back on Route 1, check out the Ogunquit Playhouse. It’s been there since 1933, and has drawn many of the greatest names in movies and theater to perform, from Bette Davis to Shirley Booth. It still puts on five shows a summer, and the immaculately manicured grounds and topiary shrubs are worth a look even if you can’t stay for the show. aby, if it’s camp you want, try dinner at Nacho Mama’s, a dream-colored Mexican disco hidden high on a hill to the left, somewhere between reality and Mt. Agamenticus.

It’s that throbbing sound people have been wondering about, a restaurant novelist Martin Amis might as well have launched. Great chips. Then give the Leavitt Movie Theater a go.

This theater is like something out of wartime Britain, complete with its folding chairs. There’s a visceral feeling of summer colony here, especially when you talk to Jocelyn Searles of Foxhole Antiques here, who specializes in export china and unearths a wonderful new collection of Rose Medallion every summer.

She tells a whale of a yarn about how Celadon export china (the bird and butterfly china with the striking bluegreen back glaze, which appeared chiefly between 1820 and 1860) got its name.

Next, on your left, is The Viking, an ice cream smorgasbord that was possibly the first in the country to treat dessert like a salad bar. Back in the early sixties, when this place was launched and designed, it was on the cutting edge of trend, as bold and surprising as the IBM Selectric 2. It’s vaulting Nordic ceilings and delicious tastes make it a fun stop as well as a beautifully maintained time capsule.

You might be in the Caribbean, with cool breezes wafting over hot white sand beaches, lapped by the ocean’s gentle waves. You might be in the Caribbean—except that the water is cold enough to kill a penguin.

Hit the brakes if you’re driving past the Milestone Motel right now. Jeff Desjardins from the front desk is about to tell you where you can find a real King’s Highway marker labelled “B 89 1769.” The letter B denotes Boston, 89 the miles to that city, and 1769 the date of the marker. “Just before the motel is the Captain Thomas Road. Take a left and follow it to the next intersection and take a right on that road. There’s an old tar street, abandoned. Drive a little way down that and you’ll see the marker obscured by overgrowth just before the road turns to dirt. It’s slate and shaped roughly like a diamond,” Jeff says.

Next is the Antique Mart Group Shop, which boasts over 100 dealers.

Don’t strain yourself looking for period furniture. Here you will find early radios—built big, like a modern television, so the famdammly could gather ’round to listen with the livestock—old dolls, ephemera, clothes wringers, glass objects, kitchen things, and a formidable mass of collectibles from the 1880s to the present.

We are now entering the Gold Coast of antique stores and flea markets that has transformed the Wells to Kennebunk stretch of Route 1. A fun stop here is Wells Antique Union, which features a total of seven stores. In Grammy’s, for example, you can find original prints by artist-cartoonist Percy Crosby depicting the 1924 Olympic Games. It’s like going into the attic of a million relatives and finding secret caches of items, clothes smelling of cloves, diaries, hatboxes, and other wonders. Anecdotes like the New England grandmother who hid raw meat under spare mattresses.

If you want to get away from the antiques circuit for a while, turn right off Route 1 onto Laudholm Farm Road.

The farm is now home to a 1600-acre estuarial research reserve. There are seven miles of trails for hiking, and a large deer herd grazes freely in the fields about the sanctuary. Back a few miles in central Wells, enjoy a pile of homemade doughnuts at Congdon’s. These are famous for decades and truly homemade. Further up the line, on the side of Litchfield’s Restaurant (which serves the finest fried fisherman’s platter in the state, with exquisite scallops, fried clams, and fried fish, and is recognized as such), Big Daddy’s uses a forty-yearold machine to make 24 flavors of the richest ice cream around. They’ve been doing it for 14 years and have quite a following. When you’ve gulped down enough at these two Route 1 favorites, wobble back to the odd private tennis courts beside Congdon’s for a reasonably-priced lesson with a local pro.

Country House Antiques in Wells specializes in fine country furniture

and accessories. Most of the merchandise comes from up-state New York, New Hampshire, and the Amish country of Pennsylvania. Most is then refinished, repaired, and reglued on the premises. The store’s finer works include a deftly carved chestnut cupboard from Lancaster Co. (PA), circa 1860 with the original glass windows, and a pine wood chest of drawers from Biddeford, circa 1875, that feels smooth and cool like velvet.

“WE DO NOT HAVE depression glass, golden oak, new collectibles and etc. of that genre,” MacDougallGionet Antiques & Associates states. It is a very selective multi-dealer store that purveys objets d’art from the 16th19th centuries. Here one finds a late 18th century Portsmouth chest, a genuine Shaker sewing desk, an 1810 Chinese export tureen, whale tooth scrimshaw from Melville’s day, 17th century English pewter. There is also a very old painted child’s sled, initialed J.H. It sits alone in a quiet a corner on the second floor and reminds me of the sled Citizen Kane cried for when he died—Rosebud. e’ve missed too much already!

Turn around and visit Jorgensen’s Antiques, in southern Wells, known all over New England for its top-end Federal furniture, like MacDougall-Gionet heavy in Salem, Boston, and New York styles. Jorgensen’s has a huge inventory as well as a wonderful Colonial garden. The garden is behind the old farmhouse and includes a beautiful trellis.

After this, you may want to get some gasoline, as well as a Big Gulp at a convenience store. It’s almost noon, anyway, and your dashboard is heating up.

ONE PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND GIFTS...

Maine, Colonial-era coin-silver utensils, and lots else, including five cats at last count. t one time there were 200 Shakers in Maine. Now there are eight. For many years, Renee Bowen has visited the Shaker community up at Sabbath Day Lake. The Shakers permit Bowen to sketch and copy plans of their works.

She then hand-crafts miniature replicas of Shaker pieces, made precisely to one-twelfth scale. Scattered among these innumerable miniatures in Renee Bowen Antiques and Fine Furniture, one might find a copper hot dog steamer from tum-of-the-century Coney Island, a giant foundry bellows turned coffee table, and small oak panels from a 14th century coffer along with other notables.

Come early on Sunday morning to the First Parish Church, Unitarian, a big white clapboard house o’ worship, to hear the bell toll. The church sports the state’s third oldest public bell, and if that isn’t enough, Paul Revere cast it in 1803.

When the wind blows hot and dusty down Route 1, Kennebunk, the Brick Store Museum takes on the comforting look of a white-washed dwelling in a Saharan town. It was built in 1825 by William Lord as a dry-goods store.

Edith Barry bought it in 1936 and dubbed it museum. The Brick Store is a well-spring for local history and an exhibit early this summer focuses on shipbuilding on Kennebunk Landing during the 19th century. Come out of the heat and into the cool.

The Wells Historical Society reprimanded Billy Johnson for putting an opthamologist’s eyeball below the historic Barnard’s Tavern sign in front of his house. It makes sense—his wife is an opthamologist “1 told them, 'Lucky she’s an opthamologist and not a proctologist,”’ Johnson says. "They haven’t said anything recently.”

Johnson also gets flak for the old railway stations (including Kennebunk Beach’s tiny station, incredibly untouched since its last use with its interior intact) he collects near his Johnson & Johnson auction-house, also on Route 1. They sit on blocks presently, awaiting an uncertain future.

Although the exterior may look like an enormous Air Force hangar built to accommodate crashed U.F.O.s, the inside of Antiques USA shoots the notion. “We sublet space only,” explains Tony Cohutt, who opened the store with Ron Lawrence on April 1.

Back in the 1930-40s, fountain pens were works of art used to create art.

Letters looked better and books read better—high expectations produced excellent results. It's the same thing with a lot of the objects at Arundel Antique Village: old bottles with bubbles in them; a huge collection of unused post-cards with faded colors, none of the sharp recent stuff; antique maps which in spite of technology are still more detailed than the shiny National Geographic fold-outs. Biddeford

It’s a mystery.

You’ve been driving past it for years.

And anyone who continues to wear blinders while driving through Biddeford, training their eyes solely on points north, will surely miss this Route 1 enigma—the ancient house on Route 1 that calls itself Club Voltiguer.

The downstairs windows are blackened, and above the front door a faded coat of arms rests. The motto underneath reads: Et Pourquoi Pas? Fonde en 1926. We don’t know much about it, except that those crossed things inside the coat of arms are not tuna fins or lacrosse sticks. They are snowshoes, and snowshoeing is the Club’s declared purpose. Curiously, it’s open year-round: “For dancing,’’ they say, and we must take the Voltiguers’ word and leave the rest to imagination.

As early as 1759, there was a mill on Factory Island. When it went bankrupt in 1829, York Manufacturing acquired the textile mill and bulked it up to a 1,000-worker operation by 1839. “It was originally manned by local farm girls,” a convivial volunteer at the Dyer Library tells us. “By the second half of the 19th century, the workers were, for the most part, of French-Canadian, Irish, Scots, or Greek descent. By 1900, men outnumbered women.” After changing the landscape of Saco Island and changing the people who lived there, the mill closed its doors in 1958,

leaving over 1,200 people wondering what it had all been for. he last log drive on the Saco River went to the millson Spring Island in 1943. In 1798, Seth Spring built a three-story Federal mansion on the island, which in turn became Spring’s tavern, a popular rest-stop along the King’s Highway.

Lafayette stopped here at this bright yellow, green-shuttered mansion to waltz with the gentry on his tour through Maine in 1825. Then the sawmills came, turning Spring Island into a lumber kingdom. A family named Deering started a lumber company at Spring’s mansion back in 1866, and today Deering Lumber still thrives in the same spot, even though the days of the great log drives are long gone.

Saco

In the 1670s, a group of drunken sailors came upon a squaw with her papoose, who were traveling peacefully down the Saco River in a canoe.

The sailors had heard that a papoose floated when thrown into the water and wanted to test the assumption. So they placed bets, upset the canoe, and the papoose sank. The papoose was the child of Squanto, Sagamore of the Saco tribe. The chief was so grief-stricken that he set his people against settlers from Saco to Portland. The campaign for vengeance was so brutal and vigorous that it denuded the area of its white population until peace was made in the early 1700s.

Although the active violence against the white man ended, legend also has it that Squanto wrought a curse on the river that survives to this day: “As long as the white man lives the Saco waters must each year drown three of his hated race,” relates Celia Sturtevant.

The Saco today looks lazy and harmless, and maybe that is why people are so surprised when the bodies wash ashore each year.

Heading north to Saco just past the air-conditioning-chilled Dairy Joy, look to the left and see a forgettable late-Federal Period structure most of whose lawn has been engulfed by Route 1. It is the easily overlooked home of Governor John Fairfield, who led the state from 1838-41. Its bricks are painted yellow, the roof is hipped, and it has four large chimneys. field also served as a U.S. senator from 1842-49, with a political career so remarkable that many considered him Presidential timber. His sudden death during an operation was the first of many steps that sent the house into obscurity.

Prout’s Neck is peaceful again, but the bloody names of places within the community recall with chilling immediacy the memory of its early years.

Enraged by the death of Sagamore Squanto’s child and other atrocities which included the beheading of an Indian boy for trying on a settler’s tricorner hat, the Saco tribe attacked this quiet settlement in the 1680s, murdering 18 men, women, and children.

Only one white settler survived the wrath of Squanto’s people by escaping into the marshes—perhaps hiding in the tall marsh grass where Route 1 now runs. magine getting so sick of paying tolls that you decide to build your own road. That’s exactly what stage coach owner John Paine did in 1805. Formerly, the King’s Highway circumvented the marsh, veering inland toward the Scarborough highlands, site of present digs for woolly mammoth (see “Nice Digs” in this issue). According to historian Wendel Whiton, Paine ran his road straight through the marsh, beginning near Anjon’s Restaurant and following the course of modern Route 1. Hence, the low road replaced the high road and was eventually incorporated into the King’s Highway. If you want to know more about the history of the highway or marshes, visit Wendel Whiton at Whiton’s Greenhouse, toward the water off Route 9, on Dunstan Landing Road in Scarborough.

Good. Park at the Route 1 K-Mart, right before the entrance ramp to 1-295, and go inside and outfit yourself with a pair of thick trousers and wear a machete.

Outside, hack your way through the undergrowth between the parking lot and the interstate ramp. Somewhere in there is another ancient mile-marker from Route One’s time as a post road, telling the distance to Boston Town.

The building that houses the new Centervale Farm Antiques is beige with forest-green shutters, a bit reminiscent of an Alpine auberge. The store beams prosperity, displaying well-preserved Period furniture, finely wrought antique jewelry, cut glass, export china, and you name it. Old sporting goods are also a big seller here: One foreigner bought a truckload of skis, snowshoes, and other goods, including an ancient, 18-foot Old Town canoe. This outstanding store is conveniently accessible for those in wheel chairs as well.

Yarmouth

Richard Halliburton was one of the most romantic writers of the 1920s and 30s. He swam the length of the Panama Canal, looked for the lost Ark of the Covenant, dined in desert kingdoms with reclusive emirs, and finally vanished forever in a junk off the coast of Japan. was tired and melancholy when 1 visited Collage Antiques and Crafts. Then I found a mint edition of Halliburton’s The Flying Carpet, and suddenly I felt very good. The store is located in the wood-shingled shopping center just north of the 1-95 ramp on Route 1 in Yarmouth. It is a new place that features very nicely priced antiques—clocks, primitives, glass, furnishings, books—as well as crafts like baskets and candles. Light pours into the store from the front window, casting an aura on the treasures within. “Miserable people don’t come in here,” says owner Janice Lewis. Well, maybe they do; but they sure don’t leave that way.

The French countryside was warm and lush-green like Maine is now when the German panzers raced across it in the Spring of 1940. By mid-June, France had surrendered. What wasn’t occupied by the Nazis set itself up as a Fascist dictatorship—Vichy. The Red Wheel in Freeport still has two bottles of unopened Vichy mineral water, circa the 1940s. Within this dusty pine barn lie other treasures of wars past— antique powder horns, flags, service rifles, and other memorabilia. Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley have visited the Red Wheel. It is also extremely popular among Japanese tourists, who come to reclaim Japanese military

relics captured during the Pacific campaign. Antiques aside, the Red Wheel has the largest collection of back-issue comic books in the state, a wide range of new hardware, and an open-air flea market on weekends.

Across the street from the Lindal Cedar Home showroom- is a giant figure of an Indian rising prepossessingly in front of Levinsky’s Clothing, where you’ll find major brands at great prices. This, more than any other landmark, marks the entrance to the Holy Land. Pilgrims have traveled up the King’s Highway for three-quarters of a century to visit L.L. Bean. Bean’s drew money, and that drew businesses that wanted to make money. Now there are innumerable retail and outlet stores here, nicknamed “Bean sprouts” by the locals, and the town still has a small feeling due to wise planning.

On the cruise toward Brunswick, you will see rotting telegraph poles running beside the railroad track near the road. On some, the old, green, glass insulators still remain—items that some collectibles stores hawk for $12 apiece.

When Connie Chung and Maurie Povich popped into Antiques at 184 Pleasant Street, a few doors down from the Dexter Shoe Outlet, they bought most of the store’s E. Swasey & Co. crocks. Another customer strapped four pressback oak chairs to the trunk of his MG and drove straight down to Florida. You might as well stop and sign the guest register.

In Brunswick, don’t miss the Pejepscot Historical Society, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, the Maine State Music Theater on the Bowdoin College campus, Mike’s hot dog stand on Maine Street, and two ice cream stores—Vermont’s finest, Ben & Jerry’s, and Brunswick’s best, Cote’s. Grab a cone at each and compare them.

adio carbon tests on the fully matured female woolly mammoth tusk discovered off U.S. Route 1 not far from Anjon’s Italian Restaurant in the Scarborough Marshes last summer estimate the prehistoric beast to be between 10,500 to 13,000 years old.

Down here, out in the muck, she stands 10 feet at the shoulder, slightly larger than an Indian Elephant. Spread over a 30-foot area, the preservation of the bones is so exquisite that a paleobiologist from the Smithsonian Institute and the University of Michigan’s Daniel Fisher, an expert on elephants with a specialty on woolly mammoths, will be here in July to feel the unique waxy texture of her bones, examine pollen samples from her teeth to determine what plant life flourished here, and look everywhere against the odds for remnants of her hair.

It’s a murder investigation of sorts.

Was she dumped here by an iceberg

speeding by some night on Route 1, the car door of history flung open, as it were, over 1,000 years, or did she get mired in the clay that surrounds her remains.

Hey, was this a salt marsh back then?

And then there is the tantalizing theory that this celebrity mammoth was killed by a Mainer, one of the first Mainers, called the Paleo Indians.

They are believed to have arrived here by crossing the Bering Strait in Alaska 12,500 years ago. Yet these same people traversed the continent to the east coast and arrived in South America almost simultaneously, with matched artifacts found from Guatemala to Nova Scotia. Most characteristic is the fluted spear point, which dates the culture here in Maine to over 11,500 years. By 8,000 B.C., these people were all over the state.

At the Vail dig near the Quebec border, five Paleo households have been discovered. Made of wood and covered with hide skins, each house was 10 feet in diameter and home to a nuclear family. Big herds of caribou

Maine, as well as California condors, which have been found as nearby as New York state. Maine itself was mostly open tundra during these years, with pine, oak, birch, willow, and alder sparsely foresting select areas. Research has helped determine that Paleo Indians stored their meat in a “cacaz.” Surplus meat was placed in a deep hole, with large rocks placed on top to keep it cold and safe from wild animals.

Chased away by undetermined meteorological conditions, the Paleos disappeared from Maine roughly 9,000 years ago. When the weather improved, a new culture migrated here witha vastly different evolutionary pattern. These were the people of the Archaic Period, among them the Red Paint People famous for the rich deposits of iron oxide pigment, called red ochre, found in their burial grounds.

The Swordfish Catchers According to archaeologist Bruce Bork from Bates College in Lewiston, this profoundly different culture was quite adventurously maritime, depending upon cod and swordfish for food.

This deepwater swordfishing became a fascinating, culture-shaping pursuit that separated these men from their southern brothers.

Did they head out to the Grand Banks in dugouts? Yes, but not that far.

The fish were considerably closer then. Bone deposits in estuaries tell the story. And of course the dangerous practice of hunting swordfish in deep waters had its attendant rituals that the Indians believed would surround them with a protective shield that kept them safe during the dangerous hunt.

actually coursing up big-mouthed Maine rivers such as the Saco, Penobscot, and Kennebec. This extraordinary situation came about because 5,000 years ago, the ocean rose, causing a magnification of tidal waters in the Gulf of Maine. This produced an overwhelming new natural resource along the coast. Rich in nutrients, the tidal waters sparked off plankton growth in the river tributories and a resultant rich food chain which was a magnet for the swordfish.

Indians made their villages along these coastal areas, enjoying swordfish, cod, and tons of oysters the size of Michael Jordan’s right foot. These oyster shell heaps, or “middens,” have been found along the North Haven Island area and in Damariscotta as well.

The Glidden Point shell heap in Damariscotta sits along the ridge alongside Route 1. It is 250 feet long, 25 feet high, and 30 feet deep. Sitting on these heaps, Indians would shuck oysters during community gatherings where their platform was their trash pile. Whaleback, another shell heap across the river, was even bigger before a farmer harvested it for lime in the 1890s.

The Red Paint people had close economic and social ties with other peoples throughout the northeast.

Projectile points made of white rock and chert are evidence that these Maine Indians had an elaborate economic trade system with Indians as far west as Lake Champlain, Vermont, and to the north as far as Ramah Bay in Labrador.

Then, after 1,200 years of undisturbed and intensified growth, the Red Paint cultural network collapsed, about 3,800 years ago.

I’m not allowed to tell you exactly where it is, but I am standing right now on a Brunswick ridge beside the Androscoggin River where Bates students have just walked up to Dr. Bruce Bork with two projectile points, or arrowheads, which he judges to be from people roughly 5,000 years old.

They’re small, white, two-inch quartz, roughly shaped but poignantly human-formed. They were found embedded in a hearth wall.

And we’re the first to see them for 5,000 years, a suspended period that gives even necessary implements a

chill. This, more than anything else, makes me almost visualize their faces and wonder what they were like.

The disappearance of the Red Paint People 3,800 years ago confounds researchers. Bork’s guess is that environmental conditions reached a critical threshold, causing the water temperature to drop, scaring the swordfish out to warmer waters such as the Gulf Stream.

An extraordinarily developed civilization, unique in its maritime habits, was gone (and the swordfish price went through the roof).

Recently, Maine archaeologists have discovered very interesting evidence that a Susquehanna tradition of Indians came up here from the south around 2,700 years ago. It had been thought that they had close ties with the Susquehanna culture in New York and Pennsylvania, but newer discoveries link the culture as far south as the Savannah River in Georgia. To this end, archaeologists have compared skeletal remains excavated from burial sites in the Blue Hill region of Maine (Red Paint people) to those from Turner Farm on North Haven Island.

Through bone isotope analysis, researchers discovered that the lifestyles of the Blue Hill Red Paint people were closely related to those of the northern Eskimos, while isotopes of the Susquehanna people from Turner Farm more closely resemble those of the Susquehanna people from Georgia.

Susquehanna burial sites, with scarcely any red ochre present, are shockingly different. It was common for a body to be buried for a period, then exhumed and dismembered.

Body parts would then be buried in different combinations and exhumed and recombined again, finally to be joined in a ceremonial cremation fire where people came together to make religious offerings.

Dr. Bork suspects that these rituals occurred every fall, due to the large amount of butternuts and beechnuts found in these graves.

valued, though of relatively poor quality, these pots appeared all over the northeast and Maine at the same time.

These new people invented the birch bark canoe and decorated themselves with highly refined stone pendants and copper beads. These are the Indians who preferred to bury their priests and sachems in mounds. Archaeological evidence has traced the migration of these people as far east as Halifax, Nova Scotia. In Maine, burial mounds have been found in Ellsworth, Stockton, Kennebunk, and a cluster around Searsport Bay. ome of these ancient Indians were really healthy people, standing as tall as five-foot six and 160 pounds. Like northern Europeans, many were husky, with large chests and broad shoulders.

Some of these people lived well into their fifties.

A lot of people think the Vikings once visited Maine, but Dr. Bork can even account for a Viking coin found in

a site near Brooklin, Maine, in terms of Indian trading habits: “During the late pre-history, people traded a lot. A stone 1 ike jasper spread all over the northeast like crazy. I think the Norse penny got caught up in this trade network. A lot of stone found in that same Brooklin site was from Labrador, and I think the coin was traded by the Norse people to the natives somewhere up north in Labrador, where the Vikings were active.”

Existing digs which may hold surprises this summer include New Meadows River in Phippsburg; Topsham, where there is a “sweet” site, as it is one of the farthest northern areas of Indian farming; Brunswick; Blue Hill; Great Diamond Island; Cape Elizabeth; Falmouth (clam shell heap across the beach from Underwood Stream); Turner Farm, and others.

Incidentally, the shells found in many heaps are about 1,500 years old; the American Oyster, found plentifully by the Indians, disappeared from these shores centuries ago. ■

ack in the early 80s, Hushang set the quality standard for Chinese cooking by disavowing itself from the viscous, corn-starch-rich food most of us grew up with. That departure into a greater variety of tastes and textures with a premium placed on fresh flavors and clean tasting sauces is as evident today as it ever was.

Recently, after having given the menu a closer look than I have in a long time, I was surprised by how good everything sounded. To start, we had fresh spring rolls ($2.95) and chicken wings ($3.95). The spring rolls were a highly textured composition of gelatinous noodles and crunchy bean sprouts in a chewy rice wrapper, flavored with shrimp and coriander. They are served cool and uncooked (sort of like a tube salad) with a rich, nutty dipping sauce. They are possibly the best spring rolls I’ve ever had. The wings were a must, too; crisp and fresh, not the abominable re-frieds often encountered.

Like most Chinese restaurants, there are scores of entrees here, with the major variations being of chicken, beef, pork, lamb, fish, and shellfish.

There is also a good selection of rice, noodles, and bean curd. We chose Chang Cha Fish ($6.95), All-Spice Chicken ($6.95), and Bean Curd

■ REVIEW" Szechwan style ($5.95) The Chang Cha Fish fired crackling bits of fried fish into a salty, sharp, shrimp-roe-flavored sauce. The flavors were bright and assertive, but not unbalanced. The all-spice chicken, also served as deep-fried chunks, came in a fragrant honey sauce that was a harmonious blend of the sweet, savory, and spicy. The generous array of scallions and pepper flakes made the dish explode with flavors that left few taste buds untouched. The bean curd, unfried, was simmered in a brown sauce with ground pork, green and red peppers, and Chinese greens. The soothing silkiness of the tofu, the mild, meaty flavor of the sauce, and the freshness of the vegetables combined to create a sensation of comfort and wholesomeness one only associates with the best home cooking. First-rate. ■

A Country Love-Hate Story Jean Stafford and Robert Lowell in Maine.

I

n the summer of 1945, the writer Jean Stafford and her husband, the poet Robert Lowell, came to Maine in search of a house, and found it in the quiet, little village of Damariscotta Mills. The couple’s residence proved brief and anything but quiet, as their domestic drama played out toward separation and divorce. The tense, 13-month drama, witnessed, aided, or abetted by some of the nation’s best known literary personalities, might be considered a tragedy except that life at the Mills proved rich grist for several of Stafford’s Pulitzer Prize-winning stories and Lowell’s longest poem.

In recent years, biographers of Stafford and Lowell have stressed the importance of the Maine interlude, but none tells the full story. Perhaps it is impossible to do so, for there are still

missing elements, and their shared mythology of Maine, Roman Catholicism, and married life awaits critical comparison. Indeed, husband and wife were so deeply immersed in the post-War literary scene that it seems impossible to see where personas end and personalities begin.

Role playing comes naturally to both writers. Stafford, a native of California and daughter of a minor writer of Western adventures, was born in 1915.

Longing for the Eastern literary scene, Jean got her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Colorado, spent a year in Germany, and gained early recognition as a writer of promise. Lowell, of course, was born in Boston in 1917.

Though both Robert and his mother always played up the prominence of the family, their particular branch was at something of a remove from the rich

and prominent Lowells, including the poets James Russell and Amy. Robert dropped out of Harvard after two years, attached himself to poet Allen Tate, and went to Kenyon College. Lowell graduated in 1940, the year he wed Stafford.

The Stafford-Lowell relationship got off to a rocky beginning. Both were promising young writers, though Stafford, being two years older, had more of a start. Perhaps she was a little too impressed by the Lowell cachet and Boston itself. Lowell’s parents did not approve of Jean, who was older, more experienced, and from the West.

Complicating matters was the fact that on a visit to Boston in 1938, Jean had been badly injured when a well-lubricated Lowell drove his car into a wall.

Free-floating feelings of responsibility and blame mixed with those of love and physical attraction. Complications never ceased. Though a nominal Roman Catholic, Jean was shocked at Robert’s decision, in 1941, to convert

to that faith and lead a technically austere life. At the same time, Lowell was not pleased by Stafford’s heavy drinking.

xternal events also intruded. At the outset of World War II, Lowell registered for the draft and made attempts to go to officer’s training. By 1943, he underwent a change of heart and publicly announced that he had become a conscientious objector. In his new role of “fire-breathing Catholic C.O.,” Lowell went to prison for five months in 194344, an experience recalled in his brilliant poem, “Memories of West Street and Lepke.” In spite of having lost her brother in the War, Stafford stood by her husband. In 1944, they produced their first books—Lowell’s Land of Unkindness won critical applause, while Stafford’s novel, Boston Adventure garnered critical acclaim and bestseller status. It was Stafford’s book that brought in money—about $20,000, or enough to buy a house in Maine.

Though the decision to live and work in Maine at least part of each year seems to have been a joint one, it was clearly Jean Stafford who was the most enthusiastic. They rented a cottage in Boothbay where, observed Stafford, “The nights are cool, the scenery is beautiful, and the summer people, to the number of 15,000, are atrocious.”

According to Lowell biographer Ian Hamilton, it was Jean who “discovered” the house in Damariscotta Mills. As she bragged: “It is about a hundred years old, has a barn attached to it which we are going to make into two vast studios, has fine old trees, a 12-mile lake in the backyard, and within a stone’s throw, the oldest R.C. church north of southern Maryland.”

Apparently the “large and grandly Hellenic” residence did not hold much attraction for Lowell. More to the point, it may have been the idea of the settled life that annoyed him. From a poetic point of view, no Maine community could have suited the historically minded Lowell better. Indeed, it is almost impossible to believe that he was not the one to select this seed-bed of Catholicism in New England. ate in the 18th century the Cottrill and Kavanagh families immigrated from Ireland. After a brief stay in Boston, they went “down” to the town of Newcastle and settled at the Mills. They flourished as merchants and in 1798 built a chapel, St. Mary’s of the Mills, the first nonFrench, non-Native American Catholic church in Maine. Fora few brief years, Newcastle was second only to Boston as a Catholic center and played frequent host to the Bishop of Boston.

In 1803, they hired architect Nicholas Codd to design St. Patrick’s Church.

The neat brick structure, completed in 1808, is the oldest surviving Catholic house of worship in New England.

Edward Kavanagh (1795-1844) was later elected to Congress and served as the first Catholic governor of Maine.

As Lowell and Stafford settled in, Father William Leo Lucey, S.J. was putting the finishing touches on his excellent biography, Edward Kavanagh (1946). Living in such a tiny community and worshipping at St. Patrick’s Church would certainly have made the couple aware of Lucey’s project. Similarly, Lowell could not have missed the fact that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s only novel, Kavanagh (1849), focused on a fictional member of the same Maine, Catholic family. Longfellow knew Governor Kavanagh personally, and both joined the Maine Historical Society in 1831.

Robert Lowell would have enjoyed the fact that Longfellow was a downeaster turned Harvard Don, while he himself was a proper Bostonian on the way to becoming a down-easter.

Lowell must have also taken perverse delight in an ancient link between his family, Newcastle, and the Kavanaghs.

In his book, Lucey noted that in 1801 the Boston attorney James Lowell represented Newcastle in a case against its Catholic citizens. James successfully argued that while Cath-

olics had the right to worship freely, they were still obliged to pay taxes in support of their Congregational Church. This was rich stuff. Now Robert Lowell was poised to make a very conscious impact on the same community.

Lowell and Stafford moved into their house in August. Though the plan was to spend the winter in Tennessee with the Tates, they ended up staying in Maine. Stafford was in a nesting mood and though Lowell balked, she hired workmen and began to transform the house. It was Jean who explored the village, visited and took tea with the neighbors—while Robert stayed close to his room or went birding. Stafford became particularly intimate with the Booth family of neighboring Grey Rock. Anna Booth, widow of the Episcopal Bishop of Vermont, and her six grown children were an energetic crew whose major requirement was that they be engaged in some sort of useful activity. That Stafford was drawn to this curious family is made clear in her touching short story, “Polite Conversation.” In his biography of Stafford, David Roberts notes that the writer’s cramped work area gave her ample view of the comings and goings of her neighbors. The desire for a snug home of her own is equally evident in the wonderful piece, “A Country Love Story.” Unfortunately, the growing remoteness of her husband pervaded at the same time. number of observers have suggested that Stafford’s success with Boston Adventure, with 400,000 copies sold in the first seven months, and subsequently her interview in Life coupled by several national honors, rankled Lowell deeply. In spite of good reviews, his book of verse appeared in an edition of 250. Increasingly, Lowell focused on poetry, religious formality, and began to ignore his wife and her work. She responded by working, drinking heavily, visiting neighbors, and getting a cat. There were several visitors that fall at what came to be known as Lord Weary's Castle, the title of Lowell’s work in progress. In October 1945, poet-critic Randall Jarrell read the movement and fueled Lowell’s ego by writing, “I think you’re potentially a better poet than anybody who writes in English.”

Among other visitors were writers Delmore Schwartz and Caroline Gordon, who had just left her husband Allen Tate. It was Gordon who asked Jean about Tate’s romantic involvements, and having gotten an ear-full, suddenly accused her hostess of gossip-mongering and began throwing things her way. Stafford fled across the street, called the sheriff and Gordon spent the night at the Booths. Lowell apparently felt that Jean had overreacted. When the pipes froze in December, Lowell and Stafford visited Schwartz in Massachusetts, where false rumors of an affair between Stafford and Schwartz led to a fist fight between the latter and Lowell. Soon afterward, Stafford headed back to Maine, and Lowell went on retreat to a Trappist monastery. iographer Roberts also notes that Lowell’s violent temper was again aroused when his sleeping wife called out the name of a former lover. Lowell apparently began strangling Stafford, an incident described in a draft of his poem, “Mills of the Kavanaughs,” and in a draft of her work, “A Country Love Story.” More often, though, it seems to have been a relationship of constant quarrelling when others were around and silence when they were alone. By summer things would reach full boil.

In her fictional account, “An Influx of Poets,” (New Yorker, November 6, 1978), Stafford gets to the heart of the marriage break-up; ‘That awful summer! Every poet in America came to stay with us.” It was not far from the truth. The Homeric list included the likes of Schwartz, John Berryman, Richard Eberhard, Philip Rahv, Robert Giroux, as well as a following of significant others and hangers-on. As Stafford saw it, they whined, drank, “read from their own work,” “never listened to others,” and eventually drifted away to be quickly replaced by others. The final summer visitor to “Edwards Mills,” her fictional Damariscotta Mills, was Minnie Zumwalt. In real life this was Gertrude Buckman, ex-wife of Delmore Schwartz. At this point it becomes difficult to separate persona from personality.

According to all accounts, it was Stafford who invited Buckman and met her when she arrived via float plane.

Buckman even recalled that when she tried to leave, Stafford begged her to stay. It was as if Stafford was plotting a novel with real people. Lowell may be seen as being equally culpable in acting things out to a conclusion. In September, with the poets gone, Stafford and Lowell closed up the house, drowned their cats, took the train to Boston, and separated. ubsequently, Stafford would suffer a break-down, Lowell would say that the Catholic Church had “served its purpose” for him and request a divorce. In 1947, Stafford published her most successful novel, The Mountain Lion, and Lowell garnered a Pulitzer for his second book, Lord Weary's Castle. Their marriage was officially dissolved in 1948. Lowell, who later lived and wrote in Castine, would wed the superb writer Elizabeth Hardwick in 1949,

critics never transpired, the poet went on to a distinguished career, wrote sixteen volumes and won a second Pulitzer for The Dolphin m 1974. Stafford continued to write at her own pace and withdrew from the limelight. Although not prolific, all of her writing remained first-rate, with The CollectedStoriesteddng a Pulitzer for fiction in 1970. terior Castle” and began a novel that was never finished. Lowell also produced a string of book reviews, including a notable survey of current American poetry which appeared in Sewanee Review.

The Maine Interlude provided both authors with a seemingly endless supply of scenic and emotional source material. Stafford’s “Polite Conversation," based on herrelationship with the Booth neighbors, is equally informative of life and outlook in the village. “A Country Love Story” is more personally focused on her new home and cooling marriage, while “An Influx of Poets” is even more autobiographical. The latter, the only published part of a projected novel, is a wonderfully crafted farewell to Lowell (as Theron Maybank) and the village (as Edwards Mills).

Lowell’s grand salute to ex-wife, village, and Church came earlier with his longest, most problematic poem, “The Mills of the Kavanaughs,” (1951).

Though Lowell could not resist adding a patrician’s “u” to the Kavanagh name and extending the family’s arrival back a full century, he built on the firm foundation of local history, with a literary nod to Longfellow. The house and garden described by Lowell is the great Federal Period home, “Kavanagh,” (also spelled “Kavanaugh” by architectural historians), which still stands. Its lonely resident, Anne Kavanaugh, is clearly modeled on Jean Stafford, in both form and speech.

It is only in the last decade or so that the combined richness of Lowell and Stafford’s Maine writing has begun to be appreciated. In Robert Lowell: A Biography (1982), Ian Hamilton traces many of the shared images, ideas, and incidents that crop up in Lowell’s verse and Stafford’s fiction. Further discussion develops in two excellent books, David Roberts’s Jean Stafford: A Biography (1988), and Ann Hulbert’s The Interior Castle: The Art and Lfie of Jean Stafford (1992). Rarely in the course of history and literature do important works of two major writers converge as closely as those of Stafford and Lowell. Their writings produced during the Maine interlude, and those inspired by it, constitute a treasure of lasting merit, the scope of which has only recently begun to be surveyed. H

At the recent annual meeting of Gorham Savings Bank’s trustees, corporators and officers, an oil painting of Allison C. Edwards, chairman of the board, was presented by the artist, Roger C. Williams of Roger Williams Advertising.

find a woman’s shoe on Smyrna Street in Dennis. 1 don’t know what to do except take it with me to the hospital and spend the rest of the day fantasizing that theownerof the shoe, lucky enough to have been kidnapped, is now being dragged across Mattawamkegg, down through Molunkus to Howland. Getting on Route 193 through Deblois, a kidnapper could travel as far as South Trescott before running into the Atlantic Ocean and having to rent a boat.

The shoe is high heeled, gold, and layered with what looks like the remains of a lizard. It is not a shoe typical of this area or any area very near here, which means that its owner is probably someone who passed hurriedly through on a long journey. Or she is someone who stays inside most of the time imagining she is someone else.

The shoe is so small that it probably belongs to someone much younger than me who hasn’t finished growing yet. I finished growing a long time ago and in fact have just reached the age where if I died, people would not say: “Struck down in his prime,” although they might say, “Too bad." As a relatively young, unmarried doctor sent here over a year ago to work off school loans by touching and poking people, I’m automatically suspect. If 1 died people would wonder what I did with my spare time.

The shoe marks my one year anniversary without a drink. The last time 1 drank was the last time I left the town limits of Dennis. One year ago today 1 went to Molunkus for a beer.

My life has slowly taken on the regularity of a river. Everything in my life: people, objects, and situations seem to hold no more significance than lawn furniture. On my way home from work this day, like any otherday, I pass Boynton’s Antiques at 7 o’clock as I cross Water Street and head up Litchfield Road. Eventually I will head down Central Street a block to the 8 o’clock AA meeting in the basement of the Methodist church. I see the same people at the meetings. I pass the same guys in their trucks travelling home in the opposite direction. We wave to each other.

Really, unless one’s patients start dying, the reputation of a basic mechanics doctor like myself depends on what one does in public and how one touches people in the office. I’ve learned that most people around here don’t like to be touched at all; they want to know all the reasons why before you do it. Other people are like cats and love to be touched delicately at the ends of their shoulders and just above the hip. The truth is that 1 hate to touch most people—I don’t tell anyone this, but the feel of other people’s skin makes me gasp for air.

Today, for instance, a young woman who had burned her chest with hot oil was dropped off for me by ambulance. The nurses laid her down on one of the beds, carefully peeled off her blouse and then her bra. She grabbed my arm, heaved her glistening, red chest up in the air and screamed with her eyes shut. I stood there, my hands down by my side. “Doctor,” one of the new nurses said. “Doctor,” she said.

I’m suddenly struck with the idea that the owner of the shoe I found this morning was really waiting behind her window curtain in the Dennis Hotei, pretending all the while that she was somewhere else, like Nice, hoping someone like me would come along and pick the shoe off the ground. Maybe she just wanted to see what the person would do. Or maybe she made a promise to herself: perhaps she decided that she would not eat, drink, or even sleep until someone came along, picked the shoe up, and did something definite with it. Not just picked it up, but picked it upand went somewhere with it. When she saw me put it in my car and drive away, maybe she went to her kitchen and made a sandwich.

Maybe the owner of the shoe is unhappy. One of those people who is easily taken over by desires, like a small country whose military consists of librarians. The only sadness of my happiness comes from wanting to want like I used to. The desire that turns the body into a raw, hungry nerve.

That feeling when one desire becomes everything, and that fraction of a second before you get it when life seems in perfect balance.

When a detour at the top of Central Street swings me into the Corville town limits, I start eating the brownies I bought for everyone at the AA meeting. By now I decide to stop at my rented house, change my clothes, and be a little late to the meeting. Harry, the owner of the house, whose wife has been diagnosed with terminal cancer at the hospital where 1 work, stands out front trimming the hedges. 1 stop a block away and watch his shoulders deliberately snapping like lobster claws.

Harry has been coming over a lot the past couple of weeks to not talk about his wife, whom I have seen in the hospital, progressively losing her hair, but to talk about hedges and about sealing the cellar with a new compound to keep it from flooding next spring. He’s convinced that this new sealant will finally solve the problem.

Avoiding Harry would mean swerving back into Corville on Old Hallowell Road and then up to Mars Hill where 1 would have to attempt the likes of Ellingswood, Montsweag, or Olaman Road to get back to Dennis and the AA meeting, so I ease into my driveway.

I’ve missed most of the AA meeting already and have eaten half the brownies.

“Dr. Brooks,” Harry says to me when 1 step out of the car carrying the brownies in one hand, my briefcase and the shoe in the other. An attractive blonde woman a little younger than me walks slowly towards us as if she is walking through water; she stands beside Harry and takes a gulp from a bottle of beer. Drops of water roll down across the bottle’s neck and onto her chin.

“Meet my daughter Elizabeth,” Harry says. "She’s visiting me from New York.

She’s gonna help me with your hedges—huh Betsy?” Worry has collected in dark sacks beneath her eyes.

I manage to smile and offer them both some brownies. Elizabeth grimaces, her hand pressed against her stomach. Harry licks his lips and glides his hand into the box. lay the brownies on top of the hedge and push the shoe in front of Elizabeth’s hand. Harry stops chewing. Elizabeth takes the shoe and slides her finger across the golden scales. She gives me the bottle so she can hold the shoe with both hands. She lets out a brief burst of laughter, more like a cough, which might contain something she wishes to say.

She buries her hand up to her wrist inside the shoe, glides it through the air, walks over behind the pine tree by the hedge and vanishes. After a second, the shoe and then her arm appear walking across the hedge like a very skinny leg that has a life of its own, that travels the world in tiny forward leaps. The shoe kicks up in the air with the long, graceful snap of a Rockette.

Then the shoe vanishes and Elizabeth reappears, laughing to herself and dangling the shoe on the end of her finger from inside the heel. She starts toward us, spinning the shoe around in circles. It rides up to the end of her finger, flies across the driveway into the rhododendron bushes, and disappears.
