ummer is here! Time to relax, unwind, and unplug from the crazy schedules we all keep. The temperatures heat up, along with the humidity and the afternoon rain showers make great backdrops for napping. Spending our days lounging poolside, at the beach, or boating are great summer past-times to help cool us off. Growing up in the center of our state, I spent many summers floating down Florida’s beautiful freshwater springs. The water temps are a refreshing 72 degrees year-round. In the summertime, boy does it feel great! With less hectic days, summer is a great time to explore places right here in our backyard. There are so many great springs to see. One of my favorites is Weeki Wachee over on the west coast of Florida. Grab a float, paddleboard, innertube, or really anything that floats and prepare to relax the day away, letting the current whisk you along the 5-mile run. If you plan to go early, you’ll end up at the take-out area where you can grab lunch, too. Another option is to pack a picnic and find a rustic area to stop along the way. Just remember to observe and respect wildlife and take your garbage back home with you. Florida has so many wonderful places to get outside, explore, and stay cool at the same time. In this issue, we’ve picked our top 5 springs located throughout the state to explore. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do and please remember to only float, swim, or snorkel, and be extra careful around vegetation, so you don’t trample it. Observe Florida’s wildlife from a distance and give animals lots of space and respect. Protect what you love so it’s here for many generations to come. Enjoy your summer! You’ll find me floating in the cool water somewhere!

Summer Daze Living in paradise makes summer days a breeze. If you’re a sunrise seeker, head to the beach for a glimpse of the sun just on the horizon. Our beaches are so beautiful in the early dawn. Uncrowded, quiet, and if you’re lucky, you might even see a sea turtle nesting or at least see her tracks from visiting our shores the previous night. Summer on the Treasure Coast means longer beach days and walks at sunset. The golden hour has some breathtaking views. Walking the beach in the evenings is a great way to get exercise when it’s not so hot out and it’s a great way to calm your mind, too. Surf fishing is always a fun way to spend time at the beach. No matter what you do at the beach, just being there has a way of making your day better! The beach is our happy place and summer is a great time of year to enjoy it. Let the fun begin and have a great summer y’all!

FLOAT ON to F lor ida’s Best Spr ings One of Florida’s unique attractions is its collection of springs dotted throughout the interior north of Orlando. Nature’s waterparks, these swimming holes deliver unbelievable water clarity and year-round temperatures of 72 degrees Fahrenheit. These fragile ecosystems have long been threatened by agricultural runoff pollutants and sewage leakage. Agricultural runoff contains fertilizers that have upset the natural balance, allowing algae to run rampant—which in turn, chokes out the eel grasses that are a staple in the diet of the manatee. This delicate balance of the springs is further damaged by overuse, disrespect for the natural habitat and littering—all of which negatively impact the beauty of these places, not to mention the purity. These springs also serve as Florida’s aquafer, responsible for 90 percent of the state’s drinking water. But as Jacque-Yves Cousteau famously said, “You only protect what you love.” The answer isn’t to stay away from these springs, but to learn how best to appreciate them. To that end, we’ve showcased the top five unique springs that we think warrant a visit. When you go, pack a lunch and allow time to linger. Most parks offer hiking trails, picnic areas, barbecue grills and other amenities for all-day enjoyment, which also explains their popularity. Do note that in the summertime, parks will turn away guests once at capacity, so be sure to plan ahead to take advantage of these escapist gems.

Silver Springs State Park Thanks to lax wildlife regulations in the 1930s, a population of rhesus monkeys brought in by a tour operator—inspired by the Tarzan films— have colonized the banks of the Silver Springs River in Ocala. They’re a draw for day trippers who rent kayaks or paddle boards from the park. Just don’t paddle too near the shore as the monkeys don’t fear people. Note, too, that the river flows at a 3.5-mph speed—a quick clip compared to the Florida river average of 2 mph. If you’re not a strong paddler, ready to power yourself upstream before floating back, consider booking the park’s extended option. It allows guests to paddle 5 miles one way, from the park’s headsprings to Ray Wayside Park on State Road 40; the return van ride to the park is included. Those who want to skip paddling altogether can experience the glass-bottom boat tours, a park attraction since the 1870s. Visit SilverSprings.com. <

Wekiva Island & Wekiwa Springs State Park The hottest riverside spot in greater Orlando, Wekiva Island is Central Florida’s take on the day party, with sand volleyball, day cabanas for rent, more than 16 beers on tap at the onsite Tooting Otter bar, plus a food truck dishing up burgers, fish tacos, veggie burgers and more. Those looking to view wildlife such as blue herons, alligators and red-tail hawks can start the day at King’s Landing in Apopka. This operator offers kayaks and canoes for rent, as well as a one-way paddle option allowing guests to leisurely take on the 8.5 miles, then take advantage of a van ride back to the starting point. The alligators were calm. They were also smaller, so I wasn’t afraid, even though my heart was racing. I’d been in the water long enough that they

had accepted my presence. They weren’t exactly excited I was there, but they were okay with it. As the sun climbed higher above the spring, one of the alligators began to move out from the algae-cloaked vegetation and into the open water seeking a basking spot on the opposite bank. This was the scene I wanted to capture—the silhouette of an alligator swimming above me in a Florida spring. I exhaled and dove as silently as possible. The scene unfolded above me and would be over in a minute. I don’t know why, but my brain decided the most efficient movement for me was to propel myself on my back looking up at the alligator from below. I did so, firing my camera from my hip as I had no time to raise the viewfinder to my mask. And just like that, the scene was over. I came up to the surface as gently as I could, aching to gulp air into my lungs, but forcing myself to breathe quietly. I had no idea what the images I had taken looked like. My aquatic housing is 20 years old and I can’t hit the playback button when my camera is in there. I didn’t see the image until I got home and it isn’t exactly what I had envisioned in my mind. However, the image still contains something of the feeling I experienced in that moment. Nothing tends to ever be perfect when you photograph wildlife, but that’s kind of the beauty of it. The scene simply comes together as it will. All you can do is simply capture the story as it unfolds before you. And this is the story of an unbothered American alligator enjoying its remote spring habitat on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park The springs of Weeki Wachee have been synonymous with mermaids since 1947 thanks to the thrice daily live-action underwater shows held at this state park an hour north of Tampa. Every day at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting, a cast of performers reenacts Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” Anyone smitten with the show can sign up for the two-day Sirens of the Deep Mermaid Camp, offered for both adults and kids. Beyond the shell bras and glittering mermaid tails, Weeki Wachee gives guests the chance to grab an inner tube, rented for $7 a day, and float a piece of the river. Want to cover more ground? Rent a canoe or kayak for a day away that feels like you’ve left the state of Florida. Ruth B. Kirby Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park One of Florida’s newest state parks, this picturesque setting, a 40-minute drive northwest of Gainesville, doesn’t see the crowds that some of the more popular parks do, making it well worth the drive. It’s one of 75 springs along the Santa Fe River, offering that white-sand experience, along with plenty of shallow water that makes it family friendly. For an even more serene experience, arrive late the day before and overnight at one of the park’s 25 campsites to enjoy the early morning tranquility. As the day goes on, the park is busy with swimmers and groups coming to enjoy the ample picnicking and barbequing facilities. Those who want to float further downriver can rent a kayak or canoe from onsite concessionaire Anderson’s Outdoor Adventures. A shuttle service is not offered from Gilchrist; however, Anderson’s does operate shuttles at three nearby locations: Poe Springs, Santa Fe River Park and Santa Fe Canoe Outpost. freshwater springs become inundated by tannin-stained runoff from the surrounding watershed. When the clear spring water from the aquifer mixes with the darker, dirtier rainwater, it can make for some dramatic underwater light and color.

Rainbow Springs State Park With its epically clear water and abundance of wildlife—loggerhead musk turtles to alligator gar—Rainbow River, with its headsprings part of Rainbow River Springs Park, holds huge appeal for snorkelers and scuba divers, especially those with less experience thanks to its depth that’s no greater than 18 feet. Those who wish to dive the river as an underwater, downstream float can book with a local operator, such as American Pro Diving Center or Famous Bird’s Underwater Manatee Dive Center and enjoy a drop-off upriver by boat. In addition to its underwater appeal, the river also courts paddleboarders and kayakers, as well as swimmers who flock to the headsprings to cool off. Protecting Florida’s Springs

ur featured photographer, Joseph Ricketts, grew up canoeing, camping, and looking for snakes whenever he could, and somewhere early along the way he picked up a camera. Since then, his love for wildlife photography combined with an academic background in biology has grown into a lifelong passion for wildlife science, visual art, and conservation story-telling. Joseph’s photography work is built upon Florida’s many representative ecosystems, but his central focus is the Floridan Aquifer and its unparalleled network of freshwater springs. Despite being one of the state’s most important resources and one of its most well-loved natural features, Florida’s freshwater springs are frequently taken for granted, as evidenced by the mounting threats they face. Through his imagery, Joseph aims to shed light upon the beauty and conservation needs of Florida’s unique aquatic habitats in order to motivate those who visit the springs to take action to protect them for generations to come. A Lesson from Summer

ummer! A time we toss aside workbooks and rigid schedules to dive into fun and relaxation. During the summer months, our family spends more time outside playing, soaking up the sun, plunging into the ocean or pool, and traveling to fun destinations (even if it’s just down the road!). Summer seems to give us “permission” to relax and enjoy life together. There is a beautiful lesson these leisurely summer days offer. The busyness of the school year often crowds out those dreamy homeschool planned days spent on long nature walks, family read-aloud time snuggled together on the sofa or picnic blanket under the palms, or extended time painting at the beach with an easel. Summer is the time we can enjoy all of these and more, without the pressure of rushing to the next subject and having the freedom to explore and discover new subjects of interest. My 9-year-old son is spending his summer studying for the PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) open water divers' certification. Charts and conversion tables galore! He doesn’t care; he has a goal to get his certification as soon as he turns 10. Now, just stop and take this in for a moment—I’m not forcing him to take another quiz on volume depths, pressure, atmospheres, and density… he wants to. Why? Because he is interested! Does it matter that it’s not from our Saxon math book or at a specific time of day or sitting at a desk? No, of course not. This is a good reminder for all of us 26

parents pulling our hair out needlessly while force-feeding information and tasks thinking that our children will only learn that one way. During the school year, it’s easy to plan our days with grand ideas of copious amounts of learning taking place within a prescribed amount of time. We dish up large portions of work and expect our children to eat it all in one sitting. Take a lesson from summer as you plan for the coming school year, serve your children yummy, bite-size selections of interesting information, and “eat” together as a family. Don’t rush! Chew on new ideas and information. Stop when the child is full and wait until they are hungry for more. The pressure is off. Go ahead and lay on the beach and write interesting words in the sand together. Skip, count seashells, or rocks or birds, and read a fun new book together as a family. Travel to a new destination (enjoy places just down the road) and give your children a nature journal to draw or write stories about all the new things they discover on their summer adventures. Find what your family loves and make learning a natural part of whatever you enjoy. So, take a sip of summer and remember how fun and relaxing learning can be! Closet Chaos No More

Decluttering Offers Renewed Outlook and a Good Deal

creative, open-minded and free-spirited shopper can have a heyday in a designer consignment boutique. Bargains alleviate shopper’s guilt and fashion statements abound with one-of-a-kind finds. An added plus: inventory changes more frequently than it does at the average department store or retail shop, where seasonal offerings hang on racks for weeks or months at a time until the next cycle rolls in with fresh choices. “You don’t know what’s going to come in the next hour or the next day,” said Dina Capehart, owner of Dina C’s Fab and Funky Consignment Boutique in West Palm Beach. “It’s like being a kid in a candy store. It constantly changes.” According to the fashion-loving Capehart who opened Dina C’s nearly 13 years ago, consignment and online shopping are benefitting from the frustrations shoppers feel toward department stores and retail shops where some shoppers say choices are limited and quality has plummeted. “I hear nothing but people complaining about a department store carrying $300 t-shirts and saying there is nothing special to be found in a lot of retail stores anymore,” said Capehart, whose sprawling 3,500 square-foot boutique offers a variety of high-end vintage and contemporary designer treasures spanning the 1940’s to current day. “People are becoming savvier in their quest for fashion finds.” Staggering prices for poor quality “Made in China” items force shoppers to seek new avenues for shopping. The sustainable shopping trend drives many online and into consignment shops to do their perusing and find budget-conscious ways to “recycle” pieces from others’ wardrobes or from their own. Consignment boutique shops are for-profit businesses where people with unwanted clothes, shoes, costume jewelry, and other accessories can bring their items to have the shop sell for them. There is a percentage of the sale that the shop owner keeps, and a portion that goes to the original owner of the items. Terms for consignment vary from shop to shop. In contrast, thrift stores are not-for-profit donation-based organizations that support charities. An Yves Saint Laurent pinstripe suit from the 1980’s in perfect condition and priced in its day for $2,000 sold for $475 recently at Capehart’s emporium. You couldn’t find anything

comparable to its quality and style today for even $4,000, she noted. It’s a win-win for all parties as the person who owned that suit got a percent of the sale, Capehart got a portion, and the buyer ended up with a good deal on a classic suit that is highly unlikely to be seen on anyone else. The pandemic also accelerated the rate of consignment and online shopping. People were hunkered down at home for months, bored, cleaning out their closets; some gained weight, others lost weight and sought a lucrative way to discard unwanted items. Their lifestyles changed; there were no balls or parties and fewer gatherings, and they were wearing more workout clothes throughout the day. They had time on their hands to consider, cull their wardrobes, and make space in their previously cluttered closets, while mystified about what the future held for “dressing up.” Fast forward to today, parties, weddings, and other events are back on the calendar. There’s a renewed sense of excitement about buying dressy clothes, local consignment owners say. Carrie Malone, owner of Coco Couture Consignment in Vero Beach, noted the significance of transfers of real estate and how it positively impacts her business. People move to town, leave town, or downsize. They bring clothing and accessories from where they came from—California, up north, Canada and elsewhere. “There are a lot of unique items,” she said of her evolving inventory. “You never know what you’re going to find here. id you know we provide physical mailboxes at our store? We have over 250 mailboxes receiving mail from all over! We even receive packages, big and small, for all our mailbox customers. Been eyeing something on Amazon? Go ahead, order and have it safely delivered to us. Have a family member sending you a gift via Fedex or UPS? Need to order wine for a party you’re throwing? We can receive and even sign for it, ready for pick up when it’s convenient for you! We also provide a forwarding service should you be out of town for months at a time. Opening a mailbox seems simple enough, however, there’s actually quite a bit that goes into it! But have no fear - if you have all the required documents ready to go, we’ll have you in and out in no time. The United States Postal Service is very particular when it comes to opening a mailbox, and we must abide by their regulations. Here’s a couple facts about setting up a mailbox with us: You must provide 2 current forms of ID and one of them must have your photo, along with your current home address. A driver’s license typically fulfills this requirement as the primary form of ID for most. The second form of ID can’t be just any credit card with your name on it… The most common secondary IDs are a passport, vehicle or voter’s registration, utility bill, etc. And remember, they can’t be expired! These also have to be updated upon expiration, so you may be getting a call from us asking for updated, current IDs.

Several forms must be signed! In addition to 2 copies of a form from the USPS, we have 2 other forms to be filled out and signed. The first is a simple application with your basic contact info that matches your primary ID. The second is an agreement between you as the customer, and Pakmail Beachside as the provider. Matt Lange, at Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa

or Chef Matt, food is a way to bring people together. His mother recognized his knack for cooking early on and encouraged him to pursue a career in the culinary arts. A family friend gave him an opportunity to be a banquet cook in 2006 and he was immediately hooked. Growing up in a sports oriented family, he enjoyed teamwork and high-energy, as well as the stewardship of working in a restaurant kitchen. He continued to hone his skills in hotel kitchens such as the Omni Orlando Hotel at Champions Gate, Rosen Shingle Creek, and Peabody Hotel Orlando. With a solid skillset in tow, he then took to the seas as sous chef for Silversea Cruises LTD in the Baltic Sea. Following his European stint, he returned to solid ground to join the team at Michelin-starred NoMi Kitchen inside Park Hyatt Chicago. His four and a half year tenure at NoMi Kitchen influenced his culinary direction focusing on seasonal, refined American cooking. In 2015, he joined Loews Chicago Hotel, where he held various positions including restaurant chef for ETA Restaurant + Bar and finally Executive Sous Chef of the hotel, generating over $20 million in Food & Beverage sales. In late 2017, he was tapped to open the new concept LIVE! By Loews in St. Louis, located atop the famed Cardinals stadium. As Opening Executive Chef, he oversaw the culinary program for the unique location, and led the openings of various Loews locations, kitchen redesigns, and special culinary projects around the country. 34

In 2021, his brother relocated to Vero Beach for an exciting work opportunity. As luck would have it, a recruiter soon after reached out to Chef Matt with the opportunity to run the culinary program at Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa. Excited at the prospect of spending more time with family, he accepted the position of Executive Chef of the beachfront resort in early 2022. Chef Matt is excited to bring his commitment to quality to the resort’s menus. He applies many of the same methods to running a successful kitchen as he would a coach of a sports team. “I believe developing the culture is an extremely important element in the kitchen,” he explains. “It is what keeps the team excited, motivated, and generating quality dishes. I feel it is essential that everyone understands that it is a team effort and that collaboration is what makes a great kitchen.” As for his menus, he aspires to showcase quality local ingredients in an approachable way, “I like to bring a quality approach to my menus. I plan to use the best caliber of ingredients, simply prepared.” Sports are still a large part of his life. The Aesthetics of Choosing the Right Floors

ou see it, every day. You stand on it. And if you’re anything like me, you spill things on it. That’s right, this month? We’re talking about flooring. If you haven’t investigated the various products available on the market for some time, you are bound to be surprised by the seemingly unending array of options currently available. I could write a doctoral dissertation on the various pros and cons of each type of flooring available for residential design these days, so rather than break down every single type, I’m going to focus on aesthetics for this article. After all, that’s the fun part anyways! So, you want to build a new home or redo the flooring in an existing home. Here are some things to consider in terms of the visual of the flooring you choose. First, let’s talk about color. Odds are you don’t want your flooring to be the focal point of your home. I mean, it’d be weird if everyone came over and just stared at their feet the whole time, right? So, think neutral. Ideally, if you anticipate being in this home for some time, pick something that would still look good should you choose to redecorate a few years down the line. Not too cool toned, not too warm toned. Also, dark vs light. Lighter colors are going to make a space look more open, but stark white or ivory are nearly impossible to keep looking clean all of the time. Consider the size of the room in relation to the size of the planks or tiles, if you’re choosing an option that features those. A cozy little room might look a bit odd with giant tiles, for example. If you’re using a flooring like hardwood, consider which direction you want the planks laid in. Also, if designing or redoing an entire home, the look of your home will be more cohesive if you choose only one or two types of flooring as opposed to a different look in each room. Individual scenes such as “Home,” “Dinner Party,” “Cooking,” “Goodnight” and “Away,” can be preset to fit the activity or time of day. ummer in the garden is time for growing. Humidity, hot temperatures, and heavy precipitation are the perfect combination for our semi-tropical plants to thrive. To take full advantage of the growing season, there’s pruning, clean up, tree trimming, and steps to take to prepare for possible storms. Pruning and Cutbacks - Summer is the time to prune and cut back shrubs. Bougainvillea, hibiscus, jasmine, viburnum, and even gardenia benefit from summer pruning. Pruning stimulates new growth and allows shrubs to fill out and become dense. Consult best practices for each species as the amount to cutback varies by plant type. Mulch and Flower Removal - Summer is time to remove dead/dying annuals and clean up mulch beds. With so much rain, mulch is likely to float outside beds and cleaning them will allow you to manage weeds. This method will also allow you to fertilize appropriately in October when the fertilizer ban expires. Tree Trimming - Summer is a good time to trim sabal palms as they have finished growing their seed pods. However, trimming of sabals should be done conservatively, leaving fronds that are perpendicular to the trunk and above. You should not hurricane cut palms as removing too many fronds stresses them. Hurricane Preparation - With the possibility of summer storms, you should make sure there aren’t any dangerous tree limbs near your home, and you should have a plan to move potted plants to secure locations. Kitchen Trends We're Loving

veryone loves a stylish kitchen, whether you own a spacious family home or condo for seasonal living. While we continue to experience growth in our town; new homeownership and homeowners ready for change, our Kitchen + Bath division is busier than ever. We asked our lead K + B designer, Jessica Mahoney, to break down her current favorites. What is your favorite cabinet door style and why? I am loving the micro shaker doors. This is a more modern/updated take on the classic shaker with a narrow stile and rail width. I love this more minimal style because they give a clean look without being too sterile or ultra-contemporary. You can incorporate this door style into a traditional home or have it pull more modern depending on final finishes. Any new color options? White kitchens are still my "most requested" but creamier hues, instead of stark whites, are definitely trending. Creamy or off-whites are warmer but still give the "light and bright" effect that we love about white kitchens. What about hardware? This is the fun part! This tends to seem like one of those small details to clients, but I think they make the biggest difference. It's in the finishes where you choose your final style. Gold is definitely trending but there is brushed, polished, lacquered, unlacquered, and more. Currently, I am loving the use of unlacquered brass. Due to its nature to patina and change over time, this finish adds aged character to a brand-new space.

What kitchen trend are you most excited to use in your designs going forward? Custom organizational inserts. For a while, the added pullouts and accessories offered by cabinet manufacturers were thought of as "not necessary for the cost." Now, everyone has been swept away by the "Home Edit" culture of living an organized life. People are using their kitchen more than ever and realizing that their everyday life would be easier with a well thought out and organized space. Clients are even looking to redo their space, specifically for the function of these added luxuries. From specified mixer pullouts to charging dock drawers, the need to simplify life is being prioritized and I LOVE making spaces that are just as functional as they are beautiful. Silver King of the Summer

ith the summer season in full effect, water temperatures are officially at their warmest. Averaging at around 83 degrees, these are prime temperatures to find tarpon crowding the beaches, inlets, and lagoons of the Treasure Coast. Thus, providing a chance at landing this popular game fish as they leave their winter hangouts and head north. These fish belong to the genus, Megalops. The genus consists of two species: the Atlantic tarpon, Megalops Atlanticus, and the Pacific tarpon, M. Cyprinoides. These fish have many alternative names, with the most well-known being the “silver king.” This refers to their flashy appearance when their large silvery scales reflect the sunlight. This popular game fish can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh up to 280 pounds. The largest recorded catch, was an Atlantic tarpon weighing in at 286 pounds, 9 ounces. Fun fact: fossil research shows that tarpon have been swimming in our waters since prehistoric times! Tarpon possess great strength, stamina, and fighting ability making them one of Florida’s premier game fish. They can only be fished recreationally, as they are not considered to be of any food value. Catching one of these fish could be considered a rite of passage for sport fisherman because of the fight they can put up upon being hooked. There is nothing quite like seeing a trophy fish leap upwards of 10 feet into the air, while simultaneously 50

thrashing its gills. Often, people like to mount a reproduction of this fish, which we’re now able to do with accurate measurements and pictures. This makes it easy for you to hang your fiberglass replica on your wall with companies such as Gray’s Taxidermy. Tarpon are considered to be scavengers, eating just about anything, despite their large size. They prefer to feed on mullet, blue crab, pilchard, and many other baitfish. The way in which you present these baits has an effect on catching this species, an added challenge being whether or not they happen to be feeding at the time. Some days, you can sit and watch them roll all day without a single bite, while other days you better hope you have enough bait to land one. Provided the conditions are right, you might have your chance of catching one on fly. No fish tests your stamina and instincts quite like a tarpon on a fly rod! Happy fishing and safe boating. An Oddball Fish

That’s a Moray!

eer closely into the cracks and crevices while scuba diving on a coral reef or shallow shipwreck, and you might glimpse a unique and often misunderstood fish—the green moray eel. The green moray is actually not even green, it’s brown. A yellow-tinged mucus coating their brownish grey body makes them appear green. This mucus protects them from parasites and diseases. Despite their sinuous serpent-like form, they aren’t sea snakes but rather, fish. Considered a “true eel,” just like other moray eels, it has a dorsal fin on its back that begins behind its head and extends along the length of its body. Unlike other fish, they don’t have pectoral fins—the two fins on either side of the body. Their muscular body, which can reach up to 8-feet in length (and up to 65 pounds), also lacks scales. To breathe, morays rest with their mouths open to pump water over their gills. This is because they don’t have bony gill covers on their sides to pump water like other fish. However, it’s this seemingly threatening behavior that gives them a bad reputation, when they are really just breathing!

Moray eels hunt at night, feasting on squid, crabs, shrimp, octopuses, and other fish. As an ambush predator, they sit patiently and wait to attack unsuspecting prey by relying on their keen sense of smell. They’ve got a pretty bizarre feature to swallow their prey, too. Similar to the creature in the movie “Alien,” moray eels have a second set of jaws. Called pharyngeal jaws, this second set of jaws sit in the throat and once the moray chomps down on their prey, this second set comes forward and latches down with backward pointing teeth to drag it back into the throat and swallow it. While eels might appear scary with their pointy teeth and gaping jaws, the reality is, when confronted with danger, they are more likely to retreat than attack. When they are more curious and bold, it’s usually due to being ed by divers. The next time you’re lucky enough to spot a moray, take a moment to appreciate this unique creature. The Killdeer

Dramatic Common Ground Nesters

sn’t it amazing how wildlife will help protect their young by sheltering them with their own body? In the picture shown, is an adult female Killdeer, Charadrius vociferus, with her 4 hatchlings that are about 2 weeks old. I was fortunate enough to be at the right place at the right time to capture this type of picture in the rain! Yes, that is correct, in the rain. Sometimes, we have to risk being in the elements in order to capture what is happening in their little worlds. This particular time, this bird was observed at a golf course, which is a very common place to find a Killdeer, despite it being a shorebird and most would suspect the ‘only’ place to find it would be at the beach. This bird is in the Plover family, and is the largest of the Plovers, and can consist of 18 different species. The Killdeer can be seen all throughout North America. It does migrate to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Central America, and all the way to the northern regions of South America. They have been noted for being in the most northern tip of Alaska, as well. The Killdeer weighs 3 to 4 ounces and stands 6 to 8 inches high with a wingspan stretching to 16 inches. Its bright amber/orange eyes and its high-pitched call helps identify its song 54

sounds like its name, ‘kill-deer.’ Both males and females will have the two black bars across their neck lines. They also have pinkish to light brown colored legs and feet but the female has a brown patch of feathers just below her eyes that merge with the black stripe coming off the bill area. You can also find this bird at the beach or similar areas. You may also see them in parking lots, roofs that are comprised of aggregate material, road edges, and farm-like areas. They are ground nesters and typically nest here from April through July. They do not bring in twigs and other material, but merely find an aggregate area they can move the dirt or gravel around and make a small shallow plate as their nest. Females will drop anywhere from 3 to 5 eggs, being very light tan in color with brown highlights. Both sexes do help with incubation that can last 24 to 28 days. Within 24 hours of hatching, the little Killdeer immediately starts walking around following their parents, mainly the female. Tracking Giants

Custom Tags to Open World to Goliath Grouper Behavior

eaching lengths of up to eight feet and weighing more than 800 pounds, the Atlantic goliath grouper is a top predator on reefs and necessary for a healthy ecosystem, including in Florida. But these cryptic fish are difficult to study in the wild—until now. Researchers from the FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and College of Engineering and Computer Science are gaining new insights into the underwater behavior of goliath groupers through the development of a novel multi-sensor tag, which includes everything from a three-axis accelerometer—like that found in your smartphone or watch to measure activity—to a video camera and a hydrophone for monitoring underwater sound. The findings were recently published in the journal Sensors. The scientists applied tags to six grouper in a simulated environment to record data on movement and activity. Then, they applied both machine learning and deep-learning methods to categorize those millions of data points into nine different behavioral categories. The most common

behaviors were hovering, forward swimming, and resting. However, more sporadic behaviors including vocalizations were captured and classified as well. Adding to the importance of this work is the fact that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) proposes a limited harvest for this species, which has been protected in U.S. waters since 1990. These new multi-sensor tags custom made to fit goliath grouper can inform more about the day-to-day activity of this species in the wild and how their behavior might differ between habitat types, such as natural versus artificial reefs or be affected by human activity, like fishing and diving, according to Lauran Brewster, Ph.D., first author and a senior research fellow in the Fisheries Ecology and Conservation Lab at Harbor Branch. Traveling Lightly

Literally and Figuratively

his notion is at the core of the work I do with myself and in helping people initiate change and transformation into their lives. I often wonder if it is not about adding one more thing, but shedding that which no longer serves us. One of our highest aspirations is to feel at peace and to be at ease with oneself. People often ask me how to accomplish that. The answer is really simple. It’s the “doing” that is the hard part. It requires simplifying with lots of unpacking, repacking, and leaving stuff behind. Many years ago, I thought about doing an experiment after I noticed that every time I traveled, I packed half my closet and never wore most of it. I didn’t need most of the things I brought with me. Not to mention, it was a hassle to check the bag, plus the extra costs. So, I decided to buy a carry-on, and was determined to take only what fit in there, not one thing less, and not one thing more. At the beginning of the experiment, packing was challenging. How would I not take this shirt, or my favorite shoes, jeans, etc. I stuck to my will… naturally stubborn as I am, and I really wanted to make this change in my life. What happened as the experiment progressed pleasantly surprised me. Traveling became easier. Packing was much more enjoyable as the choices were reduced and decisions, in a sense, became simple. I knew what I needed and that is what I packed. I was prepared to grab my bag and go. I noticed how I became much more adaptable and able to flow with the journey (literally and figuratively speaking). This then translated to, if I can do this in my trips, I can do this in my life. I became more mindful, and have gotten into the habit of asking myself, do I really need this? And I answer this honestly. And here again, lies the dance between the sacred and the mundane. Now, I won’t say this is all unicorns and rainbows, but practice helps and things get easier. Recently, on a packed flight, someone took my carry-on by mistake. In the moment, I wanted to flip out. Half my life was in there… literally. But hey, isn’t loss and learning to navigate that aspect of the human experience a part of it all? By the time I had accepted it was lost forever, it was returned to me. Life can be so poetic sometimes! (There are still honest humans in this world who returned my things intact). And so, this is it. One of the human experiences of life. That dance between the mundane and the sacred, with human complications and the simplicity of the soul, and how choosing to travel light is not only a notion for the bags we check at the airport, but for the baggage we carry daily. Ticks, Lyme and Summertime

The Best Defense is Prevention

here’s a common myth that Lyme disease is only found in the northeast, and we shouldn’t worry about infection in Florida. This is just one of many misunderstandings that surround this disease. Florida is home to a research expert in tick-borne illness, Kerry Clark, PhD, professor at University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Dr. Clark has studied Lyme and other tick-borne diseases in the southeastern United States for the past 20 years. He proved that two species of ticks in Florida carry Borrelia, the bacteria that caused Lyme disease. Additionally, his research teams have identified infected ticks on various reptiles and animals besides deer, including certain snakes, lizards, birds, rabbits and the white-footed mouse. Summer is prime time for encountering ticks. The probability of being bitten has grown due to their rapidly expanding numbers. Studies show that warmer-than-normal temperatures can more than quadruple tick reproduction. Moreover, suburban development of agricultural land and forest creates infringement upon surrounding natural habitat which greatly increases human exposure. Should you find a tick embedded in your skin, look online for instructions on how to remove it properly. There is evidence that the bacteria can transmit to humans more rapidly than once assumed, so prompt and precise removal of the tick is essential.

Ticks often carry and spread more than one pathogen. In Florida, the most common tick-borne diseases are ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Symptoms of these infections include fever, headache, muscle/joint pain and moderate to severe fatigue which usually start within two weeks of being bitten. The classic bullseye rash appears in some cases, but approximately 40-60 percent of patients who suffer from Lyme never presented with a bullseye rash. If treated immediately with appropriate antibiotics for enough time, many cases of Lyme can be stopped from progressing into persistent Lyme disease. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) developed guidelines for treatment that are outside the traditional infectious disease model. Doctors who follow these guidelines are often referred to as Lyme-literate Medical Doctors or LLMDs. For acute infection, most LLMDs give 21-30 days of Doxycycline which is more than the typical 10-14 day regimen usually prescribed. A Reprieve from the Heat

Escaping the Dog Days of Summer

hen you live in a paradise like Vero Beach, the sub-tropical summer here can be shocking, upsetting, and even a little sweaty. It’s not for the faint of heart. To avoid the heat and humidity, many snowbirds head north, caravanning up I-95 or flying out of Vero Beach Municipal Airport, commercially on Elite Airways or privately at Corporate Air. Susan Wright of Machias, Maine, bought a ticket on Elite and was delighted. She felt transported. Instead of three days journeying between her homes, it was three hours and she arrived refreshed. Her friends, Joey Spaider and Joni Lima, two longtime Vero Beach antique dealers, will fly Elite to Portland in late May. They enjoy the 70-degree Maine summer days that are overcast and rainy. Perfect weather for antique hunting and selling. Cindy O’Dare, the very successful Vero Beach realtor (who just sold a record breaking $27,000,000 home), will go to her mountain paradise in Wolf Laurel, North Carolina. It’s about a half hour north of Asheville, and temperatures are delightful; cool, crisp and you probably need a blanket at night. Cindy takes a few week-long breaks, from May through October. She enjoys the nearby flower farm, hiking, and tranquility. Next door is the delightful community of Mountain Air in Yancey County. Some Indian River County residents escape to enjoy this North Carolina County that has more artists per capita than any other county in the United States. The art shows, artisan shops, and music are outstanding.

Then, there are the hardy souls like Elaine Jones, who is Area Governor for Rotary, and President of Main Street Vero Beach, who helps put on our monthly Downtown Friday’s and Coffee with the Mayor. She is a volunteer extraordinaire. Neither sun nor humidity slow her down while she helps the community she loves, and looks beautiful while doing it. Ralph Oko is a dealer in collectibles and Florida art. He’s been in business since 1959, and finds the summer is the best time to buy goods. Most dealers stop buying and looking during the s ummer. Oko finds himself out looking for autographs and Highwaymen art, no matter the temperature. In fact, the hotter the better; he likes it that way. Some Treasure Coast residents take their boats and head for the seas, cruising the Abacos and enjoying the casual island vibe. The late John Jetson, founder of Jetson TV and Appliances, spent every summer cruising and fishing the Bahamas. Even with the heat, the private jets come into Corporate Air, the luxury FBO at the western end of the airport. They might be coming in to buy their new home, or to see if their interior design project is on track. Others jet out to Jackson Hole, Nantucket, the south of France, or a yacht in the Mediterranean. Whether you curl up with a good book and a large sweet tea, dance between sunbeams, or fly off into the wild blue yonder, the dog days of summer can be beaten, it's just how you choose to do it.
