Dearly beloved...

e are gathered here at Portfolio to celebrate love! This issue is a very special issue. Our daughter got married! We haven’t showcased a wedding issue in a few years, so we decided to feature this one since it’s our Portfolio “house” photographer and my girl, Alyssa. The world needs more love, especially right now. I don’t know about you, but it feels so great to be with dear friends and family. The last two years have been very anti-social. Weddings were scarce, masked, and uncomfortable. Destination weddings, micro weddings, and small intimate gatherings are what’s trending now. I just love weddings. They make me so happy inside and full of love. Luckily, we live in paradise and there are so many options available for beautiful weddings. Our little family wedding was held at a private barn that is very meaningful to us. The family that owns it are like family to us. It’s our “horse” family. Our daughter always dreamed of having her horse at her wedding and that dream came true. The venue is a beautiful barn with amazing sunsets, which provided the perfect ambiance

for a small intimate wedding. Keep turning the page to see all the beautiful photos captured by Meagan Puett and her husband, Andrew. Every time I look at the photos, I get all warm and fuzzy inside. You can just feel the love emitting from the pictures. What a special day! A special thanks to all our vendors for making this day better than we could have ever imagined! We have a special feature in this issue for all you Yellowstone fans. Especially for our “Rip” fans. We had the pleasure of chatting with the actor, Cole Hauser’s mom, Cass Warner. She’s our special mom feature in this issue. What a cool, fascinating lady and she offers up some pretty good mom advice, too. Happy wedding season! In love with love,

Love is in the air! It’s wedding season; let’s celebrate romance. Alyssa just got married and Reilly is next in November. Both our Portfolio girls are brides this year! We are so excited. What’s your favorite thing about a wedding? They always seem to make me cry happy tears! Small, intimate micro weddings and destination weddings are what’s trending. Toasting all the brides of 2022, cheers!

Wedded Bliss ALYSSA & DYLAN 3.28.22

Love is in the air! It’s so refreshing to celebrate joyful, happy things and this issue we decided to showcase LOVE—good old-fashioned love! The kind of true romance that fairy tales are made of. This beautiful couple met in high school, survived all those teen years, as well as college, and decided to tie the knot in 2022, after 7 years together. We couldn’t be happier to showcase their beautiful and intimate wedding. These two lovebirds are extra special, as the bride is our beautiful daughter, Alyssa, who also happens to be our staff photographer, copy editor, and many other things at Portfolio. Dylan, her husband, is also a one-of-a-kind young man that we just adore and are so happy to be able to call him our son. Written by Penny Tranchilla Photography by Meagan Puett Photography

The couple knew from the start that they didn’t want an elaborate wedding. Their first choice was to do a destination wedding in Montana with just the parents. After much discussion, they decided to get married here in Vero Beach at a very special horse farm where they spend most of their free time caring and riding Alyssa’s horse, Henry. Painted Sky Stables isn’t a wedding venue; it’s a beautiful private barn that is owned by the sweetest, most down-to-earth family you will ever meet. It is appropriately named, as the sunsets there are spectacular!

Alyssa dreamed of getting married in a Montana style, “Big Sky” setting. The wedding ceremony was in a small palm tree hammock backlit by a beautiful sunset. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect on the day they said, “I do.” Breezy, low 70s, bright blue sunny skies, with only their immediate family and friends there to witness their love and exchange of vows. It truly was the most breathtaking site. Even Henry, her horse, was in attendance.

The bride wore a beautiful gown from Olivia Bowen Bridal in Melbourne. Her earrings and bracelet are keshi petal pearls, freshwater pearls, and sterling silver custom designed and handcrafted by LPL Creations in Vero Beach. Her hair and makeup were done by Kayla Anne Flores from Salt Beauty Bar in Fort Pierce.

The photographer, Meagan Puett, was the perfect choice to capture Alyssa and Dylan's wedding. Meagan has been featured in Portfolio several times over the years, and we were thrilled that she was available to shoot for us on this magical day. Meagan specializes in destination weddings. She has such a great eye for capturing natural lighting and uses the sun to highlight her amazing talent. Her husband, Andrew, is also a great photographer, and together, they really captured the essence of the wedding.

The wedding theme was part boho, part rustic charm, part Montana vibe. Valia Franceschi, Owner and Creative Director of The Eventologie, Design & Rentals, oversaw production and styling. Her husband, Bob, who owns The Handyman, built the arbor, hung the outdoor lighting, and assisted with other props, as needed. Together, they always exceed our expectations!

Florals were designed by Jenny McClure and her great assistant, Chelsea, from Vero Beach Florist. The bridal bouquet was a mix of whites, creams, and dried grasses, along with greenery and pheasant feathers. Table arrangements were beautifully set and placed on the farmhouse tables, along with extra touches on the cake as well. The floral designs on the custom wedding arch were very chic and boho, incorporating natural palm fronds with the beautiful flowers. It was stunning!

After the ceremony, guests mingled underneath palm trees and twinkle lights, with refreshments while the couple took bride and groom portraits at sunset. Delicious charcuterie boards were provided by Chelsea’s Gourmet. The groom requested his favorite barbeque prepared by his father, Rich Carter, along with other favorite sides. It was a very old-fashioned gathering under the stars with long tables beautifully set, where guests enjoyed music played by Josh Dobson, from the East Harbor Band.

Capturing Love Through the Lens

M

eagan and Andrew are a husband and wife wedding photography team based in Florida. They met as lifeguards working together at the YMCA fourteen years ago and they have been together ever since! Shortly after Meagan graduated college, she began pursuing her love of painting, which then blossomed into love for a different kind of art: photography. She has been professionally photographing weddings, families, and more for over four years now and she has loved every second! Andrew started working with her full-time over a year ago and is her permanent second photographer during weddings, elopements, and proposals, and also takes part in all of the behind the scenes post processing and editing! Meagan and Andrew are specifically drawn to adventurous elopements and destination weddings. They love to travel and see all of the beautiful places that God has created on Earth, and what better way than to photograph awesome, adventurous people in those places?! Other than traveling, some of their favorite things to do include taking their two pups to play at the beach, hiking in the mountains (obviously outside of Florida), and eating acai bowls! Above all else, they truly believe that God has called them to show others His love through capturing His creation through photography and it is a pure joy for them to serve others in this way. We are obsessed with these photographers! Meagan and Andrew capture those special, rare moments in the way they shoot photography. Show them some extra love by following them on @meaganpuett.photography. Written by Alyssa Carter Photography provided by Meagan Puett Photography

Educate, Entertain and Enlighten

Parenting Advice from Cass Warner Mother of Cole Hauser, “Rip” from the hit TV series, Yellowstone.

A

s a mom, we try to do the best we can. We strive to instill in our children the basics: always tell the truth, treat people how you want to be treated, and be kind always. Let’s face it, raising children can be overwhelming but it can also be one of the greatest joys in life. Little ones don’t come with an instruction manual and most of the time, you have to wing it and hope it all works out… or just call your mom! One of my favorite parenting books is by James Dobson, Parenting Isn’t for Cowards. I enjoyed the way Dobson offered his advice with a sense of humor. For all you Yellowstone fans out there, we reached out to Cass Warner, mother of Cole Hauser a.k.a. “Rip,” to chat with her about raising her son. Cass is a very down-to-earth mom, despite growing up in Hollywood at Warner Bros. Studios. She’s very grounded, appreciates the beauty in little things, and truly treasures her children and grandchildren. Rumor has it that Cole and his beautiful wife have made Florida their new home. We asked Cass to share some of her best advice as a parent. Read on! Q: What’s your advice on how to raise a good man? A: First of all, believe he is good! Then remind him of his kindness and good qualities by being that way to him. Be a good example of a woman and a mother who totally believes in her children and THEIR interests and abilities. Try not to push them toward what you want them to be and do. It doesn’t work, as it isn’t their origination. My job as a parent, as a good friend to my children and to others I care about, is to encourage what I notice gets them excited about life. Feed their passion in any way you can. There are numerous ways to do that: observe with the greatest of interest; be interested in what they’re responding to; find things that relate to what they’re saying is fascinating or of interest to them; give them examples or similar activities that fire them up and help them to want to know more; find things, even little things, that you can validate and/or acknowledge they do well. Q: Moms are a child’s biggest cheerleader. How do you handle a child’s disappointment? A: Yes, moms can be their child’s biggest cheerleader, and, hopefully, they are! The best advice I have, and the best way to handle anyone’s disappointment, especially children, is to tell them they did the best they could and that’s what really matters. They’ll get another chance, if they want to. Know and be OK with their interests changing. It happens and it’s fascinating to watch their evolution. Q: Being in the movie biz, did your kids want to pursue that dream, too? A: I am happy to say that being in the movie business didn’t cause them to choose to be what they ended up being. They’re all interested in different areas of life. What was important to me is that they make money at what they love to do—then it isn’t work, it’s play. My advice is to share what interests you, as that enthusiasm gets transferred even if they don’t decide to do what you’re doing. Being excited about life and its adventures and sharing that with my kids and grandkids was and is very important to me. I knew that energy would be passed along to them, and that was essential for me. I learned that the quality of interest for something is the fuel that gets one through the challenges, which tends to happen. Every stop or barrier should be an incentive to find a way to do what one wants, rather than a reason to quit. This was a philosophy of life that my grandfather, Harry Warner, and his brothers who created Warner Bros. studio emulated. I wanted to pass this along to my kids and anyone else I could reach. I was greatly inspired by the Warner brothers’ story. I had a deep love for my grandfather, as he was a very caring soul, and loved family, his 28

May-June 2022

extended family at the studio, and was very much involved and interested in world affairs. In my mid 20s, I researched and wrote a book, later making a documentary with the same title “The Brothers Warner.” I loved enthusiastically sharing my discoveries and my own interests with my children while they were growing up. I wanted them to be aware of their family roots, and to taste things I found fun. For example: I took Cole and his friends to an improv class. I thought it would be a good time for them and it was. Then, one of his dearest friends invited him to go with him to an acting camp. Cole came back fired up about acting. To his surprise, he was cast as a lead in one of the plays, and he got a standing ovation! He realized how good that felt to be acknowledged that way, which he had so far only experienced playing sports. Several years before that, he was interested in being an astronaut, so I sent him to Space Camp in Florida. He came back from that experience excited and full of understanding as to why he needed to do math and science. School then had a purpose! (Kids need to understand that school is there to make their dreams a reality with the skills, hopefully, they are taught.) In 2006, I decided to start my own nonprofit called “The Dream Factory Project, Inc.” (TheDreamFactory.us) Realizing millions of people struggle on a day-to-day basis just to get through the day–their dreams either long forgotten, partially conceived, suppressed or just not clear. Yet, it is the very thrust towards achieving one’s dreams that keeps one excited about life. Anything I can do to encourage not only my children but others to pursue their goals and dreams is a passion of mine! I started doing video interviews with folks like actor, Matthew McConaughey; my son, Cole; actor, Giovanni Ribisi; multiple-Grammy winner, Chick Corea; and others as I felt they could educate, entertain, and enlighten others with their personal stories and successful actions. (The “3 Es” was Warner Bros.’ original motto for the studio and why they produced the kind of movies they made.) Q: Who inspired Cole to be an actor? A: There wasn’t anyone in particular. We didn’t have cable TV when the kids were growing up. I’d let them pick movies that were on VHS videos, at the time, to watch. I had quite a wonderful collection. Cole often chose the classics. He started acting at 14 years old, and, I believe, the experience and meeting other actors, such as Matt Damon and Matthew McConaughey and others was inspirational. He worked steadily from the age of 15 starting with the movie “School Ties.” Q: Are you a silly mom or serious mom? A: While they were growing up, I had a sign in our kitchen which read, “Don’t take life too seriously.” It had a circle around it, and a red line through it. In other words, keeping things light or humorous was the way to go. Whenever things got testy in our family, I’d point to the sign. It seemed to work! Thank you, Cass for sharing your parenting advice with us. Happy Mother’s Day! Cass Warner resides in California and loves to spend time outside in her garden or with her children and grandchildren, as well as write and run her own production company, Warner Sisters WarnerSisters.com. To be inspired, follow her on @casswarner. Written by Penny Tranchilla Photography by Terry McMahon

Homeschooling

Time to Think

“M

om, why won’t you and dad let me play video games?” My nine-year-old son has been asking this question more and more frequently. It seems to him video games are all his friends ever play in their spare time. Why can’t he?! I paused to collect my thoughts. “How can I communicate the “big picture” of why we do not even own video games and why we limit television or any screen time to one afternoon a week?" A young citrus tree I recently potted came to mind. The tree has a healthy number of lemons growing, the weight of the fruit is causing its slender trunk to bend over. I placed a rod alongside the trunk. The rod might be uncomfortable for the little tree, but the structure will help it until it is strong enough to stand tall on its own. As a homeschool parent and simply as a parent, I believe it is my job to educate with more than academics. I set aside times for boredom. Yes, I said the “B” word! After our schoolwork and chores are complete. I send my two boys outside (weather permitting) to play. Pediatrician Michael Rich says children need times of boredom. “Boredom is the space in which creativity and imagination happen.” I love the other way he puts it “…a chance to let their minds wander.” I encourage my boys to take walks, listen to the birds who live in our backyard, build something, paint, or draw, play in the sand, or just lay back 30

May-June 2022

and watch the clouds. Whatever they do it's a time set aside to think and be creative in the REAL world (“real” is key—video games don’t count!). Our time is valuable. Those that have made a habit of using it wisely are the ones we read about in history books. Using time wisely does not always mean filling the day with more activities or schoolwork, rather it is intentionally creating space to think and let our minds wander. Thinking time for any person, whether child or adult, is the time we grow, we solve problems, process our emotions, and create. I will admit, limiting our children's screen time is not easy, it requires more work, but the reward is worth it. While I write this, my boys are outside building a fort. I could have easily turned on the TV and had fewer interruptions, but they would never have discovered the joy of building with real tools. My nine-year-old might not understand the big picture now, but like my lemon tree, he will press against that rod (my “rigid” rule of no screens) and be uncomfortable. Hopefully, he will develop a strong habit of using his time to be creative. When he asks me why he can’t turn on the TV or play a video game I simply say, “I am giving you time to think.” Written and photography by Olivia Assaf

Threads of Our Lives

Musings from Bunny's Burrow

C

lothes are the threads of our lives in ways well beyond their function to cover our bare selves. They tie a mother to a daughter, the past to the present, one place to another. The world’s most cherished designer labels from recent decades do more than define their time. They unlock memories. Clothes, accessories, jewelry, and the stories ours can tell offer an insight into who we are. This occurred to me when I started sketching and writing about favorite pieces in my mother’s wardrobe. My mother’s dressing room was a place to admire her varied collection of classic wear and “to-die-for” pieces, and this set the tone for my life-long love of fashion. I discovered there were many vital memories from my childhood in the 1970’s through 1980’s that took place in that cozy space off my parents’ bedroom in our historic home in Alexandria, Virginia. An important ritual happened on Saturday’s when I came home from playing outdoors to find my mother sitting on a loveseat under an old-fashioned hair dryer while reading the latest issue of Vogue magazine. The white shag carpet under her freshly pedicured feet was soft and I sensed this to be important downtime between a day of doing housework and gardening, and an evening of

32

May-June 2022

socializing at a dinner party or black-tie event. We had fun mulling her wardrobe choices and selecting the appropriate accessories for her night out. The youngest of four children and only daughter, I was destined to be a tomboy favoring sports to playing with dolls. However, my mother’s dressing room offered an alternative to the playground where I could consider the more girly side of life. It is cozy yet sophisticated, friendly yet exclusive (to us), and an eternally optimistic place to be. It remains one of my favorite places to spend time with my mother. Our shopping excursions to Lord & Taylor, Woodward and Lothrop, Nordstroms, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Garfinkel's Department Stores were joyful adventures that cultivated our mother-daughter bond over fashion. Now, I have my own dressing room, “Bunny’s Burrow,” which I consider a sanctuary and place of inspiration. My collection of contemporary and vintage pieces includes some gems given to me by my mom over the years, including a 1960’s quilted floral print dinner jacket with pink satin lapels by GENO; 1960’s Merino wool long turtleneck dress purchased in Italy; 1980’s Morton Myles 3-tiered Irish lace top; and classic Gucci 1½ inch-heeled loafers with iconic brass buckles. “Bunny’s Burrow” is a creative space where I think, write, philosophize, and daydream. It is the place that I retreat to when I am especially aware of living in an ever-changing world that can be challenging and upsetting. I relax in the process of rearranging and culling items to suit an aesthetic or practical preference or release a previously static mindset. Spending time in the burrow inspires creative, loving energy to flow fluidly to the outside world. It is from my dressing room in my Vero Beach home, where I will offer musings on daily life, mostly fashion inspired. My hope is that people who rummage through their own wardrobes and mothballed boxes will see their collections with new eyes. Culling a wardrobe on a regular basis is sometimes difficult but important to do in order to allow yourself greater efficiency when dressing and to have less wasted space. I enjoy culling people’s wardrobes and seeing them feel freed up. A former Associated Press and newspaper reporter who has covered national, state, and local news, Washington society and human interest stories, I pivoted to writing about fashion in recent years. My Mother’s Dressing Room, published by Goose River Press in 2016, consists of fashion-inspired whimsical vignettes. It is available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites. Having lived in Antibes, France, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Cuernavaca, Mexico, New York City, Washington, D.C., Carson City, NV, Providence, R.I. and Castine, ME., during my career and studies, I have been exposed to people of varying styles and backgrounds. This has offered me opportunities to observe trends, shop in thrift and consignment shops, boutiques and department stores, and delight in wearing a variety of styles for different occasions. Highwaymen

Art Doesn’t Harm, It Heals

I

n 1959, Doretha Smith Hair Truesdell graduated from high school in Beckley, West Virginia. She dreamed of attending Bluefield State in the fall. Her dream was shattered when her father came home drunk, hit her mother in the head with a metal bar, and killed her in front of Doretha and her five siblings. Doretha would have been next, but a quick-thinking neighbor who arrived with a shotgun told Smith to put down the bar and get away from the children, or he would blow his head off. Smith went to jail for 20 years. His traumatized children went to live with their oldest sister, Christine, in Fort Pierce. Doretha started working as a waitress at the Fort Pierce bus station. As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Doretha has never been one to shirk responsibility. While working there, she met the charismatic Alfred Hair. It would appear that they swept each other off their feet. During the 1960s, not only was Doretha able to attend college and get her teaching degree, Alfred started the Highwaymen artists movement at their Dunbar St. home

in Fort Pierce. Times were good. They had new Cadillacs, they were happy, and Alfred was on his way to achieving his dream of being a millionaire. Then, 1970 rolled around, and on the night of August 9th, Alfred Hair was murdered at Eddie’s Place, a bar in Fort Pierce. The murderer was thought to be jealous of Alfred's success. Once again, Doretha was left with four children, ranging in age from 7 weeks to 6 years, all dependent upon her. Roderick Hair was three at the time. He had always loved to draw and doodle, and he remembered all the art and the paintings being created around his home. However, in his mind the murder of his father was due to his painting, and that shifted Roderick away from drawing. For the next eight years, Doretha taught in Fort Pierce and kept her family whole. Then, she was offered a teaching job in Ft. Lauderdale. Doretha accepted and met John Truesdell, whom she married. He would then help her raise the family. After a few years, they moved to New Jersey and it would be the first time that Roderick, now a teenager, would see snow. Roderick went on to college, married, and all was well until 2001, when Roderick was attacked by two thugs in front of his apartment complex in Maryland. He was shot in the head and was in a coma for a month at the hospital. He was not expected to survive. Doretha was in Switzerland when she was notified. She remembered thinking, “this is different, I know he will survive.” When Roderick finally woke up, the doctors told him he had been in a coma for a month. He told them, “No, I've been with my dad at his cabin in the woods. We've been fishing and talking by the white-water rapids. In fact, it was dad, who told me it was time to go.” Roderick went to rehab and fragments of the bullet will always be in his brain but he survived and Doretha still had her son. He didn't want to be around people, but he wanted to paint. Doretha and Roderick started to paint together. As the years went by, they even started painting pictures together, just like how Alfred and Doretha had long ago. Alfred Hair's symbol had been the hibiscus; the flower of love. There is a hibiscus mural on his grave. Doretha and Roderick started painting hibiscus flowers together. Doretha does the leaves and Roderick paints the flowers. They now sell these paintings together at art shows around the state. Roderick does paint solo and there is always a cabin in his paintings. Roderick thought it was art that caused his father’s murder in 1970, but he now knows that art doesn't harm, it heals. Written by Susan Harris Photography by Alyssa Carter

Mike Block String Camp

In-Person Format Returns to Vero Beach

F

or over a decade, budding musicians have developed their skills during an intensive music camp in Vero Beach, organized by internationally-known cellist, composer and educator, Mike Block. Started in 2010, the Mike Block String Camp offers week-long instruction from world-class musicians, three concerts, late-night jam sessions, catered meals and enough free time for ocean swims and dips in the hotel pool. Block, a pioneering multi-style cellist who is Julliard School trained, a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, spent Spring Break vacationing with his family in what he deems to be his second hometown of Vero Beach. He stopped by the Vero Beach High School to promote his annual summer camp which welcomes all ages and musical backgrounds and offers a variety of non-classical traditions and modern musical styles including jazz, old-time, bluegrass, Scottish folk, Carnatic South Indian classical music, Scandinavian folk, and more. The program offers an immersive experience in which students are playing music and collaborating. “My own life was changed by going to camps,” said the 39-year-old Block, explaining why he regards camps like MBSC important. “It was transformative and it changed my musical trajectory.” Block is especially excited for this year’s July 4th through the 9th camp, since it will resume its in-person format. The last two years, the camp was held online which kept students and teachers connected via Zoom. “It will be so good to see each other and play our instruments with each other again.” The faculty of diverse musical backgrounds includes Grammy-nominated violinist, Curtis Stewart, who has played sold-out shows in Madison Square Garden with Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springstein; multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Joe Troop, founder of the Grammy-nominated string band “Che Apalache,” which offers a blend of North and South American folk music; and Kimber Ludiker, two-time Grand National Fiddle Champion based in Texas.

36

May-June 2022

Hanneke Cassel, Block’s wife, also teaches at the camp and is in her own rite a highly accomplished musician. The energetic, gregarious Cassel is a super talent on the fiddle; she was the 1997 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion. The couple resides in the Boston area with their 3-year-old daughter, Eilidh. “Most musical communities are formed around one type of music,” explains Block. What makes MBSC unique is that workshops center on a variety of musical genres. “Different parts of ourselves come out in different music. We can learn a lot of different things about ourselves and our instruments based on the type of music we are playing. People will fall in love with things that they haven’t encountered before,” he states. Emri Stenn, 25, first attended MBSC in 2014 when he was 17. A Vero Beach High School orchestra violinist, Stenn spent off-hours playing mostly Irish fiddle music. He said camp changed his outlook on music overall. “There was all of this new stuff I hadn’t had a chance to learn before,” he said. “I was intimidated at first about the other styles but playing them over and over again and learning from great teachers, increased my openness to them. After classes, you socialize with people, have jam sessions and explore musical connections,” said Stenn, who graduated from University of Limerick with a bachelor’s degree in music. Summing it up, Block says, “We like to turn a fun week into a magical week.” Mike Block String Camp will be held July 4-9, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in Vero Beach. Tuition is $600 plus $150 for meals. Full payment deadline is June 1st. Lodging arrangements should be made separately at The Holiday Inn Oceanside (group discount code “MBS” available until June 1st). Scholarship application deadline is May 1st. We Are Driven to Make a Difference Wheels & Keels Foundation Inc. provides funding to selected local charities whose activities strive to improve the lives of children and adults in the Treasure Coast community, with special interest in organizations less able to secure funding from other sources. Wheels & Keels was conceived by Vero Beach residents Gavin Ruotolo, George O’Malley and Vincent DeTurris as a means to introduce a Concours-style car and boat show to the Vero Beach area. In collaboration with The Moorings Yacht & Country Club and the support of General Manager Craig Lopes and his staff, they found the perfect location to make their plan a reality. In 2009, our first event was held with less than 50 classic cars, four trailered boats, and a few yachts moored at the docks. The first charity to benefit from the proceeds was Youth Sailing Foundation. Each year the event was expanded and attracted more participants enabling the Foundation to support additional charities. This year we will be providing financial support to seven Treasure Coast charities. In 2015, Wheels & Keels Foundation Inc. was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation. The charity fundraiser became a two-day event with a dinner and live auction the night before the car and boat show. The net proceeds from these two events generate revenue that enables increased financial support for the charities. Since its inception, Wheels & Keels Foundation has donated over $500,000 to local charities. The Foundation partners with a dedicated team of volunteers, corporate sponsors, and charity representatives to plan, promote, and host our annual charity fundraising weekend. These events would not be possible without the time and talents they donate to ensure our success each year. We gratefully acknowledge their contributions. 40

Chelsea’s Gourmet Market

Food for Thought

W

e are excited to present the first ever Education Empowerment 5K, to be held on Saturday, May 28th, 2022, at Riverside Park. The race event is a fundraiser for a coalition of nonprofits dedicated to improving educational opportunities for youths. The participating 501(c)(3) tax exempt organizations are Crossover Mission, Seek the Lamb, Education: Access, and All You Need is Love. If you have not heard of these organizations before, we encourage you to do some research and sign up for the race. These small grassroots nonprofits all have wonderful origin stories, and they all share the same belief that education is the key to a better future. Each step you take during our race is a sign of your support for the general enlightenment of society. In particular, the point of a 5K is to encourage people to exert themselves in pursuit of health and community, and these vital aspects of wellness often require training in the sciences and humanities. On race day though, all that will be desired is a common commitment towards slow and steady progress. Races, like life, happen one step at a time. After the race, enjoy refreshments courtesy of Chelsea’s Gourmet Market and Rio Coco Café, along with an awards ceremony. This race is a charity

fundraiser, but equally important is the opportunity to build partnerships and engage the local public. If you are someone who values healthy eating, supports education, or just really likes running, the Education Empowerment 5K is for you. The Flavor of Love

H

eston Blumenthal, also known as the Sophisticated Gourmet, once said, “To me, food is as much about the moment, the occasion, and the company as it is about the taste,” and I couldn’t agree more. Brides today are bombarded with so many choices to make when planning their wedding; the venue, the date, the dress, the color scheme, the flowers, and the list goes on. I can go on and on about the sometimes overwhelming, but very necessary number of choices that there are to make to turn their dream wedding into a reality. With or without a “wedding planner,” decisions still must be made. One more important decision to throw on the pile (or add to your planner book) would be choosing a cake design and of course a cake flavor. Gone are the days of a simple white cake with buttercream filling. Couples these days have a plethora of flavor options at most artisan bakeries. I, for one, would want a cake that makes people say, I can’t wait for dessert. As an experienced and professional cake artist, I find that there are several helpful insights you can use when choosing a flavor. One, for example, would be to consider the time of year the wedding will be held. For a spring wedding, you may want to think about a floral design and a cake with fruit filling, like strawberry, lavender, white chocolate, or blueberry. For a summer wedding, you may want to consider a refreshing citrus flavor like lemon, key lime, mango, passionfruit, or raspberry. Fall weddings have flavors associated with that time of year, such as pumpkin, spice cake, or cinnamon apple. Lastly, winter is usually associated with fig, cranberry, dark chocolate, and butterscotch. Another helpful insight would be the type of venue you have chosen. The atmosphere can lead to the design and flavor options. For example, a farmhouse or rustic wedding venue may inspire you to choose a naked, birchwood, or a cake with neutral colors and decor such as dried flowers and pampas grass, which are highly trending right now. Common flavors for a venue like this would be a light and creamy French vanilla or butter pecan cake, especially in the fall. A beach venue may lead you to choose an elegant seashell or nautical themed cake. Appropriate flavors for such a venue would be mango, pineapple, or coconut. Chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, almond, and white cake are relatively traditional flavors that are usually crowd pleasers. They are “safe” choices for the bride that wants to keep things on the simpler side. Regardless of the venue or time of year, there are no rules about choosing a flavor for your wedding cake. People are there to celebrate you and whether you choose a simple, white wedding cake with buttercream filling, or a scrumptious pink champagne cake with a dreamy white chocolate mousse filling, people will remember the most important thing at the wedding, the love you and your new spouse share. W

ell, here we are, in the height of another sizzling Florida summer. The beaches, roads, and restaurants belong to us locals again for a little bit longer. For many Vero residents, this is a peaceful, quiet time, or a time to travel. Then, there are those of us with school age kids. We’re shuttling to summer camps, cleaning up sandy footprints, and officially 100% over our kids telling us they’re bored. It’s very evident this time of year how much our children impact our home. What are some things to consider when designing a home in which kids live? The first consideration of course: their bedrooms. Ideally, in a kid’s room you should try to carve out a place to sleep, a place to study, and a place to play. If you’re short on space, consider a lofted bunk bed- you can easily fit a desk or play space underneath. Consider fabrics and surfaces: stain-resistant fabrics, fabrics that can be machine washed and dried, walls that are able to be wiped clean. While many love carpeting in bedrooms, if you have ever stepped on the protruding heel of a barbie shoe wedges in a thick pile carpet, you’ll understand why I’m inclined to recommend tile, vinyl, or hardwood and using area rugs instead. There are a number of rug brands that can also

64

May-June 2022

be machine washed and dried! When considering room décor, focus on using accessories like bedspreads and rugs to imbue personality rather than something more permanent, like wallpaper. This way it’s easier to make changes as your kiddo ages. The baby pink wallpaper with unicorns might make your 5-year-old happy, but before you’ll know it, she’ll be whining about how her room is SO UNCOOL, MOM. For kids sharing a room, try to find ways to give them each some input on their portion of the room while keeping it coordinated. For example, bedding in different fabrics doesn’t look as clunky if they’re in coordinating colors. Above all else, remember this too shall pass. Someday we’ll miss the little grimy handprints and the Disney Princess décor. Until then, we have Clorox wipes and adult beverages. ike Lafferty, is no stranger to Vero Beach or to real estate. He’s lived here since December 2003, where he joined his mom, Colleen Lafferty, and created The Lafferty Group Team, selling properties on the Barrier Island exclusively. Later, in 2005, they combined his mom’s 30+ years of real estate experience with Mike’s degree in finance from UF, along with 13 years of sales management, and they created the firm, The Lafferty Group Real Estate & Consulting. It was a one-room office and they quickly made an impression selling island properties. Sales skyrocketed until the Great Recession hit in 2007. From 2007 to 2009, the firm worked with multiple national banks providing price opinions and selling their foreclosed properties. During this time, they perfected their skills needed to work within all aspects of the real estate industry. Since the Great Recession came to an end, the company has grown to 30 agents covering Indian River and Palm Beach Counties, and are now expanding once again. Mike was the President of the Realtors Association of Indian River County in 2013 & again in 2021. With the real estate market making drastic changes in this digital age, Mike and his firm continue to see the need to go back to a more personal one-on-one consumer driven era when realtors were more focused on creating strong personal relationships and not just getting commissions. Hence, the vision for the new growth of the company, and the launch of Lafferty Premier Waterfront & Estates. Their newest office is now located at 3096 Cardinal Drive. The firm will be catering exclusively to premier luxury property sales. Lafferty Premier is a true boutique office with a select group of realtors specializing in luxury properties, and in creating true and lasting relationships with the families they have the pleasure to work with. The company has a commitment to its clients and to themselves, to make the company be the best of its kind and will accept nothing less than perfection. Their business is based on referrals, so everyone will be involved in every transaction, ensuring their clients receive only the best possible care. Vero Beach is known as the crown jewel of the Treasure Coast. The Lafferty’s also live, work, and raise their families in the best part of Florida. Let Lafferty Premier work with you to find your own piece of paradise. For more information, contact Mike Lafferty, Broker/Owner, Lafferty Premier Waterfront & Estates at (772) 633-6345. The Smart Home

What You Need to Know

A

home of any size can benefit from smart home devices. Controlling your TV, music, lighting, shades, pool, cameras, and air conditioning on a single app just makes life easier, but knowing what products to use and making them all work together takes skill and experience. The Audiohouse is one of the top ranked integrators in the country and is recognized as an industry leader in smart home technology. Let’s take a tour of their amazing showroom in Treasure Coast Plaza to see what the “smart home” can be. Inside their “Experience Center” you will find examples of various technologies tastefully blended into beautiful spaces. Their displays of best-in-class components are truly inspiring. Walking inside, a beautiful work of art catches your eye, but a touch of a button reveals a TV, as the artwork scrolls away into the top of the frame. In another room, an elegant mirror transforms itself into a vivid TV and sound magically emanates from a painted wall through invisible speakers mounted inside the drywall. Lighting control and automated shades are some of the most popular amenities for the smart home and The Audiohouse demonstrates the benefits of both technologies. The biggest myth about lighting control is that it is complicated, but properly designed it will make your lighting easier to use and more functional.

"Experience Center" True to their name, The Audiohouse offers world-class sound and home theater systems. Step into their sound room to listen to what will almost certainly be the best sound system you have ever heard in your life. Ask to hear Phantom of the Opera, and the experience is so moving that it will bring tears to your eyes. The $50,000 system’s amplifiers are made by McIntosh, the same company that made the Grateful Dead’s famous Wall of Sound and powered Woodstock. The Bowers and Wilkins speakers come equipped with diamond tweeters and are used as monitors at Abbey Road Studios in London and for mixing sound for movies at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch. After drying your eyes, take a few minutes to watch a movie demonstration in The Audiohouse movie theater. You will come away understanding why people are installing high-end theater systems at home more than ever before since the pandemic started. What makes a home truly smart is the addition of a control system. Savant makes the most user-friendly control system in the industry that they call the Single App Home. The magic of the smart home comes together when it is installed by a company with a long track record and experienced staff. The Audiohouse has completed over 10,000 integrations over their history giving them unmatched experience and institutional knowledge of homes in every major Vero Beach community. Good Hedges Make Great Neighbors

V

ero Beach is full of friendly people. When we drive, we let other people in front of us who are waiting, we allow pedestrians to cross the street, and we honk less. We try to be good neighbors, which means understanding that not everyone wants to see into your yard. Planting a hedge for privacy and screening is natural and atheistically appealing. We often think of hedges as a straight row of one type of plant, but sometimes it works to have two or three plants and trees in combinations to achieve your goals. For the basic hedge, the go-to hedge material for the widest number of applications is Green Arboricola. It requires the least care, grows in sun or shade, and can be shaped any way one desires. For a formal and manicured look in full sun, we recommend Podocarpus. These can grow up to ten feet in height and can be shaped meticulously. Areca palms are another option and can create instant privacy. Green Buttonwoods are a native choice that are very tolerant to salt and drought and can be trimmed for a formal look. Clusia hedges are also salt and drought tolerant and only require light trimming, but do not do well in freezing temperatures. If you have the necessary space for more materials, consider a layered approach using palms and shrubs. Sabal Palms and Coconut Palms provide good height and have large heads of fronds that can block any unsightly view. Intermixing these palms with shorter Chinese Fan Palms and other hedge materials can create a virtual wall with different colors and textures. A good hedge can improve your view, add to your privacy and make you a great neighbor.

Summertime Snook Bite

ith the spring season coming to an end and summer months quickly approaching, water temperatures are back on the rise. These warmer water temperatures provide the chance to catch one of the most popular fish species in South Florida, the common snook. In the Indian River Lagoon, you can find snook along the mangroves, where they feed on many types of baitfish. Snook tend to feed more aggressively in the spring and summer months as they head into their spawning stage. The tides and moon phases play a huge part in catching this species, as they are opportunistic feeders. These fish often have a calm presence and move relatively slow until it’s time to feed, or they’ve been hooked. Anglers can expect a fight of a lifetime from a big snook. Trout, redfish, and tarpon are other common species that are targeted in the lagoon. While the snook are heading into their annual summer spawn, we can expect to see them start moving outside of the inlets and onto the beaches. Pinfish, croakers, and mullet are all excellent choices for those who like to fish with live bait. If you prefer to fish artificial, anything from D.O.A. bait busters to bucktails jigs and gold/silver spoons will get the job done. Remember, when catching this big, beautiful species to handle them with care, as they will be in their spawning stage. Be sure to support the bellies while holding them horizontally, as holding them vertically can cause irreversible damage to their internal organs and can be fatal. Some other species you might expect to see off the beaches this time of year include tarpon, crevalle jack, and of course sharks.

76

May-June 2022

If you’re up for the challenge, try your luck fly fishing in the lagoon or off the beach for the common snook. Arguably one of the most difficult fish to catch on fly, snook have a distinctive black lateral line that run down either side of their bodies. This line serves as a sensory system which allow the fish to feel vibrations in the water, protecting them from predators and sensing movement of prey. This can present an added challenge for anglers as they are walking along the beaches, across the deck of a boat, or opening and closing hatches since these fish are capable of picking up different vibrations and can spook quite easily. As a charter captain raised on fishing the Indian River Lagoon, I feel it’s within my purview to remind those who are aware, and inform those who aren’t, our lagoon is in dire need of attention. While there is no single remedy to restore the state of the lagoons water quality, there are actions we can take to help prevent it from getting worse. I encourage you to research, learn, and hold space for an open, honest conversation on the topic. Captains for Clean Water, Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, and Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) are all great resources and serve as a voice for those of us who spend our time on these waters. Happy fishing and safe boating. Tight lines! Osprey

Diving for Dinner

I

sn’t it amazing to watch birds rely on the resource of fish as their primary diet to dive or plunge into the water time and time again, finally coming up with their catch? One of the largest diving birds in the southeastern part of North America is an Osprey, also known as Pandion haliaetus. This is that beautiful, primarily black, feathered bird to the topside, with mostly white underparts and a white head, and striking yellow eyes that soars gracefully above lakes or along the beach, waiting for a fish to make the wrong move, as it would then dive to the water snatching it up. Fish are 99% of their diet. How do you tell the male to the female apart? Well, the male in this species has a very bright white breast plate of feathers. Whereas the female, she too will have a bright white breast plate, but hers will have a brown swag of feathers crossing like a necklace. Both are respectfully the same size, unlike in other raptor species where ‘sexual reverse dimorphism’ would be the case, and the female is much larger than the male. This is most common in Bald Eagles and Great Horned Owls. We can also tell the adult Osprey from the juveniles, as the adults will always have ‘yellow’ eyes, whereas the juveniles will have amber/orange-colored eyes. The adults will have a wingspan nearing 72” and weighing in at approximately 4 pounds. Osprey tend to build a nest in a man-made structure, either a channel marker near the water or maybe a power companies tower, or even a structure set specifically for Osprey considered as an Osprey platform. They will also build a nest in a tree they find appropriate for their nesting opportunities, not necessarily selecting alive trees with canopies. Many will begin courting

Portfolio-VeroBeach.com

in November to December, while most will begin nesting around February, fledging their young April to May. Most commonly, the female will drop 2 to 3 eggs; if an overachiever, she might drop 4 eggs. Too many eggs can result in many challenges for the hatchlings as they will fight aggressively for food that the adults bring in. These hatchlings are fed fish directly from the catch, typically brought in by the male in the early weeks of their lives, not regurgitated food. As the hatchlings get past 4 weeks, it is more common to see both the male and the female providing food resources. A couple amazing facts about these birds is that many do migrate great distances. For instance, in Europe, their Osprey migrate back and forth from South Africa! Most of the Osprey in the southeastern North American regions have adapted and live in their area year-round. Another neat fact, is that Osprey have 4 toes, which at impact on the water catching a fish, they will have 1 talon backwards and the other 3 forward. Upon catching the fish, they will articulate 1 toe, so there are 2 on each side of the catch. They will also maneuver the fish when in flight; they carry it aerodynamically head forward! Absolutely amazing! To learn a bit more about these birds, never hesitate in looking them up on Cornell’s website at AllAboutBirds.org, which is a fabulous digital resource. There are many books that can also help guide you to your mystery bird and apps for your mobile devices, too. Creature Feature

Not Quite a Jellyfish

I

’ll never forget the first time (that I remember) hearing about a Portuguese man o' war. I was in middle school and on vacation with my family in the Florida Keys. We were standing on a dock watching the sunset, along with a couple who were both covered in tattoos and long scars that wrapped around their bodies. Turns out, those scars were from getting entangled in the tentacles of the man o’ war—a beautiful, yet highly venomous sea creature. While most people call the man o’ war a jellyfish, it’s actually a siphonophore (pronounced sigh-fawn-oh-four), which is a colony of specialized animals called zooids that work together as one. Each little zooid has a unique role in the colony, whether it’s to catch prey, digest, swim, or reproduce. Siphonophores are related to their more popular cousins—corals and true jellyfish. Yet, these gelatinous creatures are considered some of the most abundant and important predators in the ocean. There are about 175 known species. Found mostly in tropical and subtropical seas, the man o' war is propelled by winds and ocean currents alone using a sail atop their colorful floating bells. Lurking below the bell, the strands of tentacles average about 30 feet, but can reach lengths of up to 100 feet (which is longer than a blue whale, the planet’s largest animal). 80

May-June 2022

The man o’ war uses its stinging cells to paralyze and kill small fish and other small creatures. Then, the specialized feeding zooids bring the prey up to the mouths. For humans, a man o’ war sting is painful, but rarely deadly. However, they can still deliver a painful sting even if washed up on the shore dead. A few years ago I was walking on the beach and after a wave washed over my feet, I noticed a stinging sensation. When I looked down, I saw the unmistakable brilliant blue tentacles of a small man o’ war. If you are stung, the latest medical research suggests carefully removing (with gloves on) any noticeable tentacles from the afflicted areas and then rinsing the area with plenty of lukewarm fresh water until the stinging sensation becomes lessened. Keep an eye out for shock or other signs of distress. Since that time on the dock in Key Largo, I’ve seen countless man o’ wars, both washed up on beaches or while swimming in the ocean. I respectfully keep my distance while admiring this beautiful yet slightly dangerous ocean predator. Written by Bethany Augliere Photography by Bryant Turffs

FAU Harbor Branch

An UnEGG-Spected Surprise

W

hen biologist and FAU alumnus, Justin Perrault, Ph.D., was surveying the beach for green sea turtles one night, he got the surprise of his life—he witnessed a nest emerge where 25% of the hatchlings were albino. Perrault wondered, “Why were so many of these hatchlings albino and how did their health compare to the normally-pigmented hatchlings?” He stated, “Oftentimes, in captivity, animals with albinism have immune system deficits, so we wanted to see if that was true of the hatchlings as well.” Perrault, director of research at Loggerhead Marinelife Center based in Juno Beach, FL, was already working on a collaborative study with Annie Page-Karjian, D.V.M., Ph.D., clinical veterinarian and assistant research professor at the FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute to evaluate the health of mother sea turtles, including if they pass on a potentially deadly virus to their babies, and the health of those hatchlings. This was an opportunity they didn’t want to pass up. “You typically just see one albino individual, if any,” Perrault said. “So, a nest that was one-quarter albino is quite rare and hasn't been documented in green turtles in the literature until this study. To my knowledge, it has been documented just one other time in the literature in loggerhead turtles.” For the study, published in the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, the researchers collected the hatchlings upon emergence, brought them back to the lab, did a physical exam, and collected a small amount of blood. The blood was used to test for a number of different components, called analytes, including electrolytes, minerals, white blood cell counts, and more. “There is, to our

82

May-June 2022

knowledge, no data on blood analytes in any free-ranging albino wildlife to date,” Perrault said. While the researchers found some health differences between the two groups, nothing indicated that the albino hatchlings were unhealthy. “Maybe albino hatchlings are otherwise healthy, aside from their reduced survivorship due to their inability to camouflage,” he said. Another thing that surprised the researchers was the number of fathers for the nest. “We expected one father and that perhaps the mother and father were both carriers of albinism (which still could be the case),” said Perrault. “But genetics revealed the nest to have three different fathers, indicating that the genetics of albinism in sea turtles might be more complicated than we originally thought,” he added. The green sea turtle is protected as an endangered species by the Federal Endangered Species Act and as a federally-designated endangered species by Florida’s Endangered and Threatened Species Rule. They face threats on land and in water, from entanglement in fishing gear to habitat loss due to development. For Page-Karjian, “this interesting finding highlights the importance of regular surveillance and monitoring the health of wildlife populations, a critical but often overlooked component of successful, sustainable management of free-ranging wild animals. The more we know about apparently healthy wildlife species, the better equipped we will be to document, understand, and mitigate stressors that can affect their survival.” Written and photography by Bethany Augliere

Promoting Health and Healing

The Ancient Art of Cupping

I

n the Summer Olympics, you may have noticed swimmers sporting dark reddish-purple circular marks on their backs. These are the result of the ancient Chinese medical technique called cupping. For elite athletes, cupping helps relieve pain, increase range of motion, and boost recovery time between intense training sessions. For this reason, cupping is now frequently utilized in college and professional sports rehab and physical therapy programs. However, you don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit from cupping. The technique has shown to be effective in alleviating musculoskeletal pain, soft tissue injury, arthritis, headache and migraine, cough, asthma, symptoms of the common cold, and may even help lower blood pressure. Cupping has also been touted as an anti-aging cosmetic procedure to plump the skin and has been incorporated into weight loss programs to tone the abdomen and reduce cellulite. The practice of cupping uses glass, plastic, or rubber cups that are placed over specific muscle groups while suction is created using fire or manual pumps that remove air from the inside of the cup. Cupping can be stationary or a liniment may be applied first so that the practitioner can glide the cups over the skin similar to a deep tissue massage. The cups typically remain for a few minutes and the marks may last up to a week. A common myth is that the suction simply creates a bruise or a “hickey”. However, when cupping is repeated in subsequent sessions, it produces less discoloration each time. Several theories exist on how cupping works, although there is no one idea that explains the totality of its effects. The main action of cupping is to enhance the circulation of blood and to remove toxins and waste products that are trapped in the tissues. Cupping relieves pain by promoting progressive muscle relaxation, loosening adhesions, and revitalizing connective tissue. Many find the experience relaxing and notice improvement right away. The woman pictured above has undergone two cupping sessions for upper back pain that was disturbing her sleep and interfering with her golf game. She did not have full range of motion in her right arm. When she returned for the second session, she exclaimed that she experienced almost immediate and complete relief from her pain after the first treatment. She

noted that she was now able to sleep through the night without pain and could finally take a full golf swing again. Cupping is a wonderful adjunct to acupuncture and is also a great stand-alone treatment for those wary of needles. To find out if cupping may be beneficial for you or to schedule an appointment with one of our practitioners, please call Indian River Acupuncture & Functional Medicine at (772) 564-8383. Sacred Connections

A

s Esther Perel, the leader in relational intelligence would put it, “the quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives.” Quality relationships begin with ourselves. In encounters with others, we learn more of what happens within. Everyone we meet is our teacher. But alas! Relationships with others are beautiful, transformative, and at the heart of being a human in this world. They bring us joy, laughter, pleasure, peace, love, and wonder. They also are complicated at times, strike chords, and make us question things. A relationship with another is a sacred connection where something of its own comes to life. They are a dance in which we present ourselves as we are and offer this energy to the other and become receptive to other’s energy as well. Relationships are an exchange in which we listen, speak, feel, learn, find, and grow. See the other, hold the other, hear the other, and are seen, held, and heard back. We show up, gift our attention, dedicate our time, offer our compassion and kindness. We receive presence, touch, and nurturing as well. We experience the softening of it all and more. I would venture to say that in some such deep connections, we access things of ourselves that we didn’t even know existed within. Yes, relationships make the world go ‘round, but finding harmony, not to be confused with balance, might often be seen like a challenge. I make the distinction between balance and harmony because balance, as I learned from a dear teacher, is assuming a 50/50. Truth is, in life, in relationships, and with things, we will often find that sometimes it is an 40/60, other a 60/40, others a 70/30 and so on.

88

May-June 2022

Under this awareness, we can already understand that there will be times when you hold more space, others when you need more space held for you and this is okay. The human in us will want to direct our energy to taking score. Our soul knows that this is a collaborative work and there is no score to be kept because it all goes to the same bucket. When we are sure of where we stand, we rest assured that reciprocity exists. Another good thing to remember is that relationships are like plants. They need just the right amount of water, light, fertilizer, and weeding out. They need talking, singing, music, and most importantly, a proper environment. They need time and patience, and even space to go through seasons. The human in us will at times get lost in life, the speed, the rush, the keeping up. Our soul will know that we are forgetting something; it will remember we are made for more. Don’t forget to tune in, to laugh, to say “I love you,” to show you love them, to talk about things often, and at length, to surprise, to hug, to touch, to do something nice for the other, to just lay and be thankful for the beautiful embrace, to keep this plant alive. Yoga

Your Key to Strong Immunity

K

eeping our immune system robust has never been more of a priority than it is today. Our health is priceless; incorporating as many healthy practices into our lifestyle is more imperative now than ever before. There are many unsurprising ways to strengthen our immune system: eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, getting adequate sleep, minimizing stress, not smoking, and if drinking alcohol, doing so in moderation. As we grow older, our immune response capability diminishes, contributing to increased infections and cancer. Our first line of defense against the threats associated with aging is to prioritize strengthening and supporting our immunity. Yoga has been shown to be an incredibly effective immunity-supporting practice. It can help lower stress hormones that compromise the immune system, while also conditioning the lungs and respiratory tract, stimulating the lymphatic system to oust toxins from the body, and bringing oxygenated blood to the various organs to ensure their optimal function. Research has shown yoga reduces the harmful effects of chronic inflammation, a major source of detrimental health issues. The physical postures, or asana, of yoga directly target immunity in various ways. Many inverted postures (Downward Facing Dog) or forward bends (Seated Forward Bend) will focus the immune system on the sinuses, ultimately helping to ease congestion. These specific types of poses may aid in relieving congestion as well as preventing any complications from secondary

infections by draining the lungs. If one is grappling with bronchial congestion, or you feel like you’re gasping for air, heart opening poses (Camel Pose, Cobra Pose) may help to open the chest and prevent pneumonia. When you are suffering the flu, asana should be avoided altogether and one’s priority needs to be absolute rest. The physical practice is not the only way in which yoga aids our immunity. Given the fact that colds and flu attack the bronchial passages, practices to exercise the lungs and maximize breath capacity help bolster one’s immune response. Breathing practices, or pranayama, can provide not only calming effects on our nervous system, but also strengthening effects on our immune system. Moreover, meditation works to support our body’s health through body and mind stress reduction. Countless research has proven meditation to increase endorphins, decreases cortisol levels, and cultivate positive states of mind, which all work to promote better health. Your health and immunity are truly priceless. Luckily, the time is always right to begin a yoga practice. Come meet us in class or private instruction and experience the vitality yoga can give you. Doing What You Love

From Party to Production

L

ife is a kaleidoscope of opportunities and we are so grateful that Vero Beach has provided our company with such a strategic location between Miami, Orlando, and West Palm Beach. We love servicing our home base of Vero Beach, as well as producing events throughout South Florida and nationwide. The Eventologie, is our primary company, under which The Furnitologie and The Handy Fixers were created. The Eventologie is a full-service production company specializing in turnkey events. We conceive, design, and set-up all sized venues. We feel honored every time our customers welcome us into their stories, lives, families, and friendships. We love what we do, and it shows. The Furnitologie is our rental company and its closest to our Vero Beach clients' hearts. We realized there was a niche of clients who wanted to host small-scale, yet beautiful events and that is why we created The Furnitologie. We have a wide variety of rental furniture that offers our clientele the perfect pieces to prepare their space for birthday parties, anniversaries, Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, weddings, and so much more. Our services are flexible and you can customize your rentals! From the table settings (chargers, china, glassware, and silverware), tables, chairs, lounges, or flowers (from local vendors), the options are truly endless. Once we do the first social event for a client, they feel comfortable calling us

for all their future celebrations, that's why it's so special. The Handy Fixers was conceived during the pandemic, when our clients found themselves wanting to upgrade the look and feel of their home environments and they came to us for help. This company grew exponentially overnight, and we are so happy to be able to provide a service that helps our clients fall back in love with their homes. We work with the best event planners, venues, and local vendors. When there is a need for a service that is not available in Vero Beach, we reach out to our affiliate vendors, from the surrounding areas, and generally, they are able to provide the service with competitive delivery fees. Vero Beach is a charming beach town where we are able to do what we love most: pool parties, beach parties, fancy barbecues, and whimsical weddings. Our rental pieces and lounge sets are perfect for these aesthetic type of events. We know there are still more hearts to conquer in Vero Beach, but so far it has been an amazing ride. To book your next event or to schedule a consultation, call (786) 262-0558 or visit TheEventologie.com. Written by Valia Franceschi Photography by Vera Franceschi
