Life is so beautiful here in Vero Beach and our surrounding communities. There has been a recent influx of visitors and new residents (welcome to Vero, newbies)! I guess our sleepy little town has been discovered! This is truly the best time of year to spend outdoors. Get outside! Explore new places and old favorites near and far, and remember to support our non-profits, small businesses and local restaurants. The past year was tough financially for everyone and together, we can thrive! It’s so great to live where spring and summer never end.

Palm trees and the ocean breeze… What a beautiful time to be outdoors. We’re so fortunate to live in such an amazing place. From stunning beaches to botanical gardens and so much more, it’s hard to stay indoors when you’re being beckoned by a tropical paradise. We recently strolled through McKee Botanical Garden and if you haven’t been lately, it is AMAZING! There are so many new features to explore, even the little ones will be mesmerized. Go outside and soak up the fabulous Florida sunshine—and don’t forget to wear your sunscreen! Happy spring!

CAPTURING THE MAGIC OF MOTHER OCEAN THROUGH A DISTORTED LENS

I

grew up in the ocean. If I wasn’t under it, either free diving or scuba diving, I was on top of it, surfing, fishing or boating. Getting lost in the uninhabited southern chain of the Bahamas, I experienced firsthand

the magic of what lies beneath the waves from very early on in life.

I met the fragility of the sea and heard the respect that Mother Ocean demanded. Growing up amongst ocean lovers and explorers, I was taught from the beginning that I had to respect the ocean and her raw power. I knew that I was in her control the second I dipped under the surface. Written and photography by Christopher P. Leidy

A

s a contemporary and abstract underwater photographer attempting to capture this raw power, I tend to see ocean life through a distorted lens. I use a Canon 5 DS R, in a Nauticam housing with an assortment of lenses

and strobes that allow me to achieve the hues and saturation to reach exactly what I need in creating my abstract art. My goal is to see something and capture it in a way that bends the mind’s eye when viewing one of my large scale pieces. I often photograph the small intricate delicacies of corals and sea fans, enlarging it so it is quite impactful for the wall. I love taking observers of my art on a visual dive through the magic fantasy world of the underwater ocean. To me, the underwater world is my photo set. It’s uncontrolled and without boundaries. There is no time to stop to reshoot and no time to reorganize yourself.

When I am blessed enough to witness an opportunity which very few people have been able to see, I really have to be on my game, always ready for anything and ready to start shooting. Setting up my “scene” on a minute-by-minute basis calls for sharp creativity and a willingness to change the vibe and style in an instant. Capturing the beauties of underwater life and sharing it with the world is where I find the most pleasure.

M

ost of the time, I spend my days floating through the Coral Sea, Indonesia, as well as Papua, New Guinea. My first dive in the Coral

Triangle was in Papua about 11 years ago. It felt so surreal. It was

like stepping into another world. A beautiful underwater world filled with

an abundance of life and vibrant color. Encounters with bigger fish in what seemed like a much larger ocean. I find myself exploring destinations where life becomes raw and uncharted. Those destinations allow for my greatest creativity to run amuck and wild. Being born into a family of travelers and explorers, staying local would just be too weird and unnatural. When I swim through these far away oceans with my blinders off, I welcome all that the ocean blesses me with. Everything special happens to find its way in front of my camera lens, in between the underwater destinations that I am swimming to and from. The tiny little living creatures and corals hold a big impact to my viewers. This image, Anemone Sandman, was shot in Komodo, Indonesia.

I

am keenly aware of how precious and fragile life is in the ocean. Seeing firsthand, through my travels I see the effects of how the human race has dropped the ball on taking proper care of Mother Ocean. Capturing the

beauty within the deep blue sea is just one way I can help to promote a clean

and healthy planet. We all need to be better stewards of our environment. Getting people to fall in love with the ocean, hopefully, means they will care for her, nurture her and protect her. We need to understand the importance of a strong and clean ocean and how we need to respect and protect her. Throughout my lifetime, I have learned that life should never be taken for granted... by land or by sea. T

he underwater world holds beauty and mystery that not everyone gets to experience. However, Chris Leidy, our featured photographer, makes it his life’s mission to share this magical blue world of wonder by creating stunning images of life under the sea. Our oceans are in danger. By capturing the beauty of life in the deep blue, Chris hopes that more people will fall in love with the ocean and therefore, protect her. Our oceans make up more than 71 percent of the earth. Respect the ocean. Protect the ocean. Love the ocean. Although we don’t know what the future holds for any of us or our planet, the decisions we make today heavily impact our outcome. Fight for things you believe in and do it in a kind way that captures the magic of your mission, like Chris does in his beautiful photography. Together, we can all make a difference.

Our cover photo, titled “Red Palms” is an infrared photograph of a palm grove in the out islands of Indonesia. Chris took this image right before he began exploring the jungles in search of a hidden gem of a waterfall. Chris, his wife, Cayla Jean, and their beautiful new baby girl, Zephyr Lee Leidy, reside in Bali, but spend the winter months in Palm Beach, their second home. Veterans Helping Veterans:

Ocean is the Only Medication

T

he great outdoors provide an opportunity to be present in the moment, not caught in the past, or worried about the future. Created in 2014 by Jimmy Buffet's boat captain, Vinnie LaSorsa of Lighthouse Point and funded by donations, Freedom Fighter Outdoors’ (FFO) mission is to make vets with post-traumatic stress disorder feel that they are part of something and not defined by their disability. Former Army combat medic Rena Trotter of Port St. Lucie, an Afghanistan war veteran, feels helping other vets enjoy fishing in our beautiful Florida waters is healing for everyone. It promotes connectivity, something missing from many vet's lives who find themselves homebound. It also inspires Rena to heal and help others. FFO will pay all the expenses incurred for a veteran to travel to Florida, including food and accommodations. This includes making all the arrangements for chartering area fishing boats. All this is made possible by the generous support from corporate sponsors that include Margaritaville, Costa Sunglasses, Yeti, and private donations. One World War II veteran came aboard and was glad to be sprung from a nursing home and a mandatory curfew. In sharing meals, salt air and the great outdoors, he felt that somebody cared about him again and he had fun. 30

March-April 2021

Bird is an Orlando vet who lost his leg in Baghdad at age 23 when his Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb. Married with a family, he vows that his disability will not define him. A road trip and fishing outing makes that vow easier to keep. Rusty is a Purple Heart recipient from Pittsburgh. While serving in Afghanistan, an explosion sent his truck off a bridge. A quadriplegic, he now has only partial use of one arm. Danny, his brother, was released from military service to take care of him. One of the first vets through FFO, Rusty says that he would rather have a physical injury than a mental injury. If you’re looking for an opportunity to share some love and kindness, contact Freedom Fighter Outdoors, (888) 642-0486 or visit FreedomFighter Outdoors.org to learn about sponsor, donor or volunteer opportunities. In honor and memory of John Thofner Jetson, an Air Force veteran who had a heart for his fellow veterans. Jetson TV & Appliances and Vero Beach Portfolio Magazine salutes our veterans.

Homeschooling:

Making Learning Fun, Inspiring and Simple

“D

ad, mom won’t read me history today! Tell her she has to!” My then seven-year-old complained to my husband after we had finished school for the day. I thought to myself, “Wow, I certainly picked the right history book!” Making learning fun, inspiring and simple is my goal. When I sit down to plan out the year, month, week or day and consider the myriad of subjects to be covered in our homeschool lessons… English, Latin, reading, writing, arithmetic, history, geography, character development, science… OK you get the picture—there are A LOT! Because the bulk of our school day is typically 9-11:30AM each day, I look for creative ways to combine subjects in order to keep my eight and three-year-old engaged as we traverse the many topics in a timely manner. I have come up with my own little system to help this process along with the three 'A' words: atmosphere, anthology and art. I will cover atmosphere and anthology in a future article; for now let's start with my favorite subject which is art! Little boys have short attention spans so I have to keep my lessons concise and fun. I try and combine several lessons into one through some kind of activity, art lesson or handicraft. I have discovered combining art with pretty much any subject makes it much more memorable! History, geography, character development and science can easily be combined through an art lesson or activity. Here’s an example: recently after reading about the history of the first Russians the ‘Rus,’ my children followed the Rus’ trade route to Constantinople on a map. Constantinople was where the Rus traded ivory, honey, nuts and wax for silk, glass and silver. My children colored a map of the route as I read an engaging history story. I then brought out

32

March-April 2021

our Book of Centuries so that we could record important dates about the Rus and my boys could conceptualize when these events took place in relation to their own birthdays. We then rolled traditional beeswax candles while talking about how bees make wax. The candles were gifted to friends later. Bam! About four subjects knocked out in no more than an hour. This is why our history book is so loved by my kids. The Story of The World from Well Trained Mind Press. They offer an activity book that includes corresponding literature suggestions, map work, coloring pages and art projects, in case I’m not feeling that creative! Our nature walks often turn into science lessons and arts and crafts as well. All of the leaves, flowers or shells collected the children examine with magnifying glasses and draw pictures in their nature journals. We then talk about the Latin words for various plants or discuss interesting facts about our treasures. I then set the children up with paints or air dry clay. The children imprint flowers or shells into clay or use them as paint “brushes.” We love making little note cards for friends with these paintings. Art would not be complete without introducing children to the masters. Once a week, I select an artist who painted during the period we are reading about in history or a painting that depicts a subject we are studying. My boys observe the picture carefully then describe what they see… colors, textures, feelings. We talk about the artist and when they lived. Then, I provide them with quality paint brushes, paint and paper or a small canvas and they make their own replica. As a homeschool parent, you can make learning fun and simple by thinking of ways to combine subjects into easy activities, outdoor adventures or simple art lessons. It’s all about having fun while learning… not just for the children, but for you, too!

Emily Gurklis:

Emotionally Honest Lyrics and Memorable Melodies

E

very song is a story. Vero Beach-based singer/songwriter Emily Gurklis’ affinity for music evolved at a young age, beginning with piano lessons in elementary school. She later graduated to guitar and started singing in her youth group. During her college years she began casually writing songs on her own. After graduating with a degree in special education, she became an Indian River County teacher by day and an impassioned songwriter by night. Over the past two years, Emily has written songs in many styles of music, but she most enjoys writing folk, indie and pop music. She regularly travels to Nashville to co-write with artists across genres. She also writes multiple times weekly in virtual sessions collaborating with artists across the U.S. Every songwriting session looks different, but often begins with a particular concept or feeling in mind. The artist and other writers typically focus on the main concept of the song, called the "hook," then the lyrics and melodies are built around the hook to bring it to life. Emily's goal is always to create a song that embodies the artist's vision and brand; she is passionate about placing a strong emphasis on emotionally honest lyrics supported by

34

March-April 2021

memorable melodies. She believes the writing process to be an incredible one, as it involves engaging the intellect and emotions in a challenging and rewarding way. While her main focus is writing for others, Emily often writes for her personal projects as well. In 2020, she released her debut single, "Homesick." An entirely Vero-based team worked together to translate the song into a beautiful and nostalgic music video, which was filmed at various locations around Indian River County. Emily recently premiered the music video and showcased her songwriting at an emerging local music venue called Felt Studios. When she’s not teaching or writing music, Emily leads worship at her home church, Calvary Chapel Vero Beach. Her song "Homesick" can be found and enjoyed on virtually all streaming platforms. FOOD & DRINK THE SPREAD

American Icon Brewery:

A New Era

I

f you haven’t been to American Icon Brewery in the past year, it’s time to pay them a visit. Many changes began brewing in late 2019, from new management and ownership, to fresh new menu items and most importantly, award-winning beer. American Icon Brewery is housed in Vero Beach’s oldest municipal building—built in 1926—the Vero Beach Diesel Power Plant (a.k.a. the old City of Vero Beach Municipal Power Plant.) After sitting vacant for decades, this iconic brick structure was saved from demolition after being added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Real estate developer Michael Rechter bought the building in 2016 and revitalized the landmark by turning it into a full production brewing facility and restaurant in 2017.

The Team In 2019, Michael passed the torch to Jason Emmett and Carl Berry. Jason is the former president and CEO of Duffy’s Sports Grill, recognized as the premier sports themed restaurant in South Florida with 34 locations. Carl spent 16 years with Duffy’s, learning the business inside and out. “I started as a line cook and progressed to chef, then moved to the front of house, assistant general manager, general manager, and eventually director of training,” Carl says. “Jason and I had been talking about doing something on our own when we got the call from Michael about helping with American Icon in a consulting/ management capacity. We got involved and it didn’t take long before we transitioned into ownership of the brewery.” Hospitality is imperative to Carl and Jason. They’ve put a lot of effort into hiring the right culinary team, training staff, elevating customer service and ensuring consistency on every level.“We also welcomed Ariel Klein as General Manager to the management team,” Carl says. “Finding the right person to focus on hospitality, food, service and management through the pandemic has made all the difference in the world. She’s been a bright light for us.”

The Brews Beer takes center stage at American Icon Brewery. “Our brew master, Jesse Robles, is a diamond in the rough. He’s classically trained and studied in Chicago and Munich, Germany where he earned an international diploma in brewing technology,” Carl says. “His core brewing philosophy is incomparable. We’ve encouraged him to be adventurous with his flavor profiles and we’re getting some amazing results. He does a phenomenal job. We’ve really enjoyed watching him explore his creativity.” Be on the lookout for seasonal favorite, Florida Heat, an award-winning Berliner Weisse, available in cans for at-home consumption. Blood oranges and Fresno chili peppers give this brew a sweet, sour and spicy profile perfect for the beach, boat or backyard barbecue. You can also find American Icon’s beer beyond the brewery. “We’re currently working with three distributors. You can find our 40

Pono Nutrition:

Healthy Goodies Made Locally charming southern boy from Virginia named Lee Hunter. In 2015, an opportunity came up in Vero Beach for Lee to work for Kimpton Hotels. After living in California for 14 years, she packed her bags and moved cross country to start a new chapter in her life. Upon arriving in Vero Beach, Sheila started personal training and running bootcamps. After a few months, she became the Front Office Manager & Director of Rooms at Costa d'Este Beach Resort & Spa. Since moving from Southern California, a lot has changed for the Hunter's. They were engaged in 2017, got married in 2018, then 10 months later, Sheila's dream of starting a family came true and their son Ellis was born. Sheila continued running body transformation challenges. They were blessed with their second son in September and she also discovered a new, fun way to serve people. Sheila began selling protein donuts, energy teas, protein coffees and healthy meal replacement smoothies. Word got around quick and people began reaching out wanting to try these healthy goodies. Pono Nutrition soon was born, with a satellite office out of Sheila’s private residence offering curbside pickup and delivery. Thanks to word-of-mouth referrals, Pono Nutrition has really taken off. Customers can pre-order online through the order form on Sheila’s social media channels as she works around her two little ones. Her new discovery helping people make healthier food choices created additional income around her full-time hotel management job, and attracted a friend who wanted to do this with her. Sheila's vision is to open up a healthy cafe in Vero Beach, own other cafes in small towns around the U.S., and to teach others how they can do the same. Last year was heavily defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to global social and economic disruption. In December, with a heavy heart, Sheila decided to leave her Costa family and the hospitality industry. She is now a present parent to her boys and looks forward to finding the perfect space for her business. She’s super grateful for the opportunity and community support. Tourism is the largest industry for Hawaii which naturally led Sheila to the University of Hawaii at Manoa to major in travel industry management where she achieved her Bachelor of Science degree. Sheila knew there would be more opportunities for her if she moved. Born and raised in Hawaii, she always wanted to explore living on the mainland and own her own business. At age 22, Sheila moved to California to pursue her career in hotel management. She grew to love the industry but felt there was something missing in her life. In 2005, she left the hotel industry to follow her passion in health and fitness. During this time, she met a

Christina Bruce Interiors:

Bringing the Indoors Out

A

s the lucky ones who get to live in paradise, we spend a lot of time outdoors. Our outdoor patios and porches become like another room in our home. It’s with that idea in mind that I love to design outdoor spaces that have the feel of bringing the comforts of the indoors out. Outdoor fabrics and furnishing have come a long way from the days of those chairs with plastic straps that left your backside looking like a piece of bacon. The technology for producing the materials that make outdoor furniture and fabrics durable to the elements has advanced tremendously, giving us more options and comfort. While I still like the look of some of the classic outdoor furniture materials, like teak and wicker, the outdoor woods or woven natural materials, like true wicker need to be refinished and have a shorter lifespan. Many of the products made using plastic materials can provide an incredibly maintenance-free piece. They also allow for fun and unique designs, like the amazing chair pictured here. This is the Napa Lounge Chair from our very own local treasure, David Francis Furniture. The chair is made of UV resistant fibers over powder-coated aluminum—an ultimate marriage of style and ease of maintenance. You can select from one of their many outdoor materials for this chair and retails at $1,260. Outdoor fabrics can now be found from nearly every manufacturer in a variety of colors and patterns. The “hand” of these fabrics (fancy designer lingo for the way a fabric feels) has become so soft and luxurious that I often use outdoor fabrics on indoor upholstery simply for the durability to stains and fading. While these fabrics can sometimes be more expensive than their indoor counterparts, they are often worth the investment especially in active households with children and pets. It’s never a good idea to use indoor materials outside, especially in completely uncovered areas as they will fade and disintegrate quickly. It’s equally important to make sure all of the internal cushions on outdoor furniture and pillows are made for outdoors unless you’re a fan of mildew. My two favorite ways to truly make an outdoor space feel like an extension of the home is with area rugs and lighting. There are many different options for outdoor rugs these days. Like the outdoor fabrics, many are so comfortable that it’s hard to believe they can be used outdoors. There are also other options, made of the plastic products previously mentioned, that are so durable you can literally hose them off. There are also a wide variety of outdoor lighting pendants and chandeliers that can truly finish a space. Check the rating of the fixture you’re using as some are rated for damp areas like a covered patio, and others are wet rated and can be completely exposed to the elements. Be sure to use a licensed electrician to install these fixtures. This is definitely not the time for a DIY project to save a couple bucks. If you use the proper materials, you can have a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy for years to come. Visit ChristinaBruceInteriors.com for more inspiration, or follow on @christinabruceinteriors.

Spring Planting:

For a Flowering Summer

A

s the weather warms up the Treasure Coast, many of the area’s flowering trees come to life bringing new, vibrant colors to our gardens. Three special species that come out of hibernation are the royal poinciana, crape myrtle, and frangipani. The royal poinciana, also known as the flame tree, is a classic tropical tree. Poincianas, which are originally found in Madagascar, have been in Florida for a century and were central to many of the Florida Highwaymen paintings of our area. In the summer, these trees burst into a bright orange-red color. Planted in full sun, they grow quickly in height and breadth and can eventually reach 40 feet in size. Proper pruning can create an understory of shade and make them less susceptible to storm damage. Newly planted poincianas can take a few seasons to start blooming, but once they start they will bring tropical colors to your summer. The crape myrtle, which is known as the lilac of the south, adorns many of the boulevards in our area. It is originally from Asia and is a smaller tree—no more than 15 to 25 feet when mature. It, too, is a summer bloomer, with white, red, purple, or pink flowers from July to September. The tree has a single or multi-trunk variety. The crape myrtle loves sun and should be pruned for desired shape, however, do not over prune, as you will reduce flower growth and will have uneven flower clusters in future years. A crape myrtle stands alone well as a showpiece in the garden. The frangipani (plumeria) is a native of Central America and the Caribbean. This tree is known for its tropical leaves and flowers. In the Aztec empire,

owning one signified elite status. Most varieties, except bridal wreath, lose all their leaves in the winter leaving behind a dramatic skeleton of trunk and branches. Then from June to November, broad leaves and yellow, pink, white, or red flowers emerge. These smaller trees can grow to 20 feet and do well in full sun. They can be mostly neglected, but once they flower, they will get your attention. Spring is a great time to plant flowering trees so you can enjoy their fragrances and tropical colors all summer long. Learn more at AielloLandscape.com.

Bonita Bungalow:

Where Artists Can Bloom

S

amantha and Jamie Irvin, who have a passion for the arts and a keen interest in helping to grow the downtown Arts District, have converted a former mother-in-law cottage on their property to a writer/artist abode. They’ve christened their special retreat “Bonita Bungalow.” The first artist they’ve invited is a writer, who just happens to have authored this article. Their only stipulations: be a good steward of the property and use the space and time to write. “Our dream and vision for our guests is that they find that flow they’ve been searching for,” says Samantha, “that they find that inspiration to help spark their creative juices.” This comfortable, nurturing arrangement is working so well that their first artist-in-residence is now writing a book there. She’s also thinking of making Vero Beach her permanent winter home and helping her hosts in their quest to attract other artists. Samantha and Jamie are both part-time artists themselves. Samantha is a painter and Jamie is a musician. Samantha, who is an advisor for the new Arts Village, has a degree in entertainment business and works in marketing and sales for Rennick Realtors. She has design training and experience ranging from filmmaking to interior design. 54

March-April 2021

Jamie, who works in aquaculture, is a trained musician. He has played guitar with several bands and was even signed to a record label for a time. His heart and soul is blues music, but he also enjoys fishing, boating and surfing on the weekends. “I wouldn’t mind having a musician stay here sometime,” Jamie says. “Then we could jam in my studio.” It’s no coincidence that the soothing colors of the sea and sky, as well as the warm colors that echo the sand and sunlight, are the palette the Irvins chose in decorating their bungalow. They used a beach theme, accenting it with artists’ tools of the trade such as books, a painting easel and paints. Samantha repeated a sea motif throughout the two rooms by incorporating blue-and-white striped fabrics along with nautical motifs and seashell art. To provide a well-lit writing space, she included a table with driftwood legs and a driftwood-base lamp. Jamie, who did most of the outside work, contributed a surfboard as a wall decoration for the bedroom.

Coral Conservation

oral reefs are considered one of the most threatened ecosystems on the planet and are dying at alarming rates worldwide. Scientists attribute coral bleaching and ultimately massive coral death to many environmental stressors, particularly warming water temperatures due to climate change. Since 1984, researchers from Florida Atlantic University's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (FAU’s Harbor Branch) have studied the effects of land-based nutrient pollution on coral reefs in Looe Key, a designated preserve area within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. With 30 years of unique data, researchers discovered that the problem of coral bleaching is not just due to a warming planet but also a planet that is simultaneously being enriched with reactive nitrogen from multiple sources. Improperly treated sewage, fertilizers, and topsoil are elevating nitrogen levels, which are causing phosphorus starvation in the corals, reducing their temperature threshold for "bleaching." Data revealed that living coral cover at Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area declined from nearly 33 percent in 1984 to less than 6 percent in 2008. These coral reefs were dying off long before rising water temperatures impacted them. This study represents the longest record of reactive nutrients and algae concentrations for coral reefs anywhere in the world. Florida’s reefs are also threatened by Scleractinian Tissue Loss Disease, which has caused mass coral die-offs since 2014. Researchers at FAU's Harbor Branch have optimized a 3-D modeling technique that allows them to track the disease's progression and have also identified an intervention technique that involves the use of an antibiotic epoxy to help mitigate future outbreaks.

58

March-April 2021

While most coral reefs are found in the brightly lit shallow waters of tropical areas, some occur in the ocean's twilight zone. These mesophotic reefs are located at depths of at least 150 feet and must survive with a minimal amount of sunlight. These reefs are mostly unexplored but initial surveys have indicated that they are considerably healthier than many of the shallow coral reefs. To better understand these complex ecosystems, researchers at FAU's Harbor Branch are characterizing mesophotic coral reef communities in the Southeastern United States, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. They are also working to assess the level of genetic connectivity between coral communities to determine if mesophotic ecosystems can serve as a refuge for species that are currently being threatened in shallow water environments. Coral reef communities are among the most diverse ecosystems on the planet and are home to approximately 25% of all life in the ocean. These habitats also improve water quality, protect shorelines from erosion and support a multi-billion-dollar diving and tourism industry. By mapping, monitoring, and analyzing samples from coral reefs, FAU's Harbor Branch researchers have a deep understanding of the issues that impact them. This information is critical for policymakers to develop sound conservation, management, and restoration strategies for Florida's coral reefs.

The Fascinating Lives of

Seahorses I n the animal kingdom, seahorses are pretty unique in that males get pregnant. These doting fathers carry their babies around in a pouch for about 20 days before giving birth. Numerous characteristics make these specialized fish interesting, including the fact that they hold the title for the fish that swims the slowest. Seahorses swim upright and use their dorsal fins to propel slowly forward. To move up and down, they adjust the volume of air in their swim bladders, which is an air pocket inside their bodies. Easily exhausted, they wrap their tails around blades of grass or coral to rest and hide from predators looking for a snack. Some other interesting facts: they can change color, move their eyes independently of one another, and have a prehensile tail (meaning it can grasp objects). About 50 species of seahorses live in shallow waters around the world, found in habitats like seagrass beds, coral reefs and mangroves. Florida is home to three species, the lined seahorse, which can grow to more than seven inches; the dwarf, which is less than an inch; and the slender or longsnout seahorse, which can be seven inches long. Globally, the lined seahorse is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List with decreasing populations, along with 11 other species. They face threats due to habitat loss from development, pollution, being caught in indiscriminate fishing gear, as well as being caught, dried and sold for traditional medicines to treat infertility, among other things. An estimated 37 million seahorses are taken from the ocean every year. Emilie Stump, a biologist with the marine conservation group, Project Seahorse, examined how seahorses and their cousins, the pipefish, used habitat in Biscayne National Park in an effort to help their conservation. During her study, she documented two species of seahorse and found that they prefer seagrass meadows over coral reef and other habitats. Blue Heron Bridge in West Palm Beach is a well-known spot to search for seahorses, along with other well-camouflaged critters like octopus and nudibranchs. “I’ve loved seahorses ever since I was a kid,” says photographer, Nico Ientile. “After waiting my whole life to see one, I was stoked to finally find one while diving the bridge.” It takes effort and a keen eye to find them, he said, but the bizarre fish are worth it.

Down Sea Charters:

Spring Brings Anglers Ample Opportunities

W

inter delivered the Treasure Coast a steady stream of cold air. Air temperature fluctuated between the low 70s during the day and dipped down into the low 50s at night, causing the water temperature in the river to plummet down to as low as 57 degrees. This is downright cold for all of our species. With all this change came an adjustment and fishing was not always consistent. Looking into the future, we can expect somewhat warmer temperatures as we transition into March and April. This time of year can be interesting. As a guide, one of the most common questions anglers ask is, “What is the best time of the year to fish this area?” These spring months tends to be my response. The slow and steady shift through spring will bring some of the best opportunities that fishing allows, and success will depend on one’s preparation. During this time, one will expect to see a good amount of the baitfish move back into the shallow water from their deep-water hideouts. With these baitfish come the predators. The uniqueness of the Treasure Coast is that it offers diversity. Expect to see every species living together down a single shoreline. Snook begin feeding consistently again as they shake off the chills of winter. Pompano flood the river and the beaches. Speckled seatrout begin their spawning rituals and the possibility of finding a fish over 10 pounds is a real possibility. These target species seem to be more prevalent as well as more willing to feed in spring. With the combination of perfect temperature, hungry fish and gin-clear transparent water, it’s no wonder this time of year tends to be the best time to experience what the Treasure Coast has to offer. For inshore and offshore charter inquiries, please contact Captain Sam Atwell at sam@downseacharters.com, or call (772) 532-9347. You can also find him on @captsamatwell.

Roseate Spoonbill:

Where is that Pink Bird?

E

ver wonder what those beautiful pink birds are and where they live? This beautiful and graceful species is the roseate spoonbill, Platalea ajaja. This bird is in the ibis and spoonbill family order called Pelecaniformes, which also includes five other families of long-legged wading birds such as egrets, herons, ibises and other large storks that are not migratory. This particular bird is known for its ‘spoon-shaped’ bill that’s very unique to its breed. Many people wonder why we don’t see them along lakesides or creek beds with so many other wading or shore birds. Well, the roseate spoonbill is an extremely picky eater, or forager to be exact, as they’re looking for an average depth of water of 12.5 cm. Too deep or too shallow makes it very difficult for this bird to successfully and easily find food for themselves and or their young. Inside their bill are sensory glands that help them to identify a food resource either it be a fish, herbaceous material they would like, even fresh or saltwater shrimp or crustaceans. When the sensory glands detect movement as they’re combing in the shallow marsh areas, they snap their bill closed and toss the food into the back of their throats to swallow. The greatest of their colonies use to exist near Tavernier Key for decades. Now that their water quality and food resources have changed in the upper Keys, they’ve moved their colonies to many areas throughout Florida. Spoonbills eat shrimp, shrimp eat algae, and the algae make their own red and yellow pigments, called carotenoids. Some scientists believe that the pink coloration that roseate spoonbills acquire as they mature is due to their diet of carotenoid-rich organisms like shrimp. The more they eat, the pinker they get. During the months of February-May, these birds are roosting and raising their young along with many other herons and egrets on rookeries (islands) where they feel safe from predators and safety in numbers of similar species. Find that special rookery and you will have a delightful time watching these birds fly in with the most beautiful display of colors! Nutritional Supplements:

Do I Need a Multi-Vitamin/Mineral?

T

he nutritional supplement industry is booming with products flooding the online marketplace and lining the shelves of pharmacies, big-box and health food stores. Many wonder how to sort through the hype to know if they really need a multi-vitamin/mineral. We've been taught that food provides all necessary vitamins and minerals and this is true if you’re eating a diet that is organic, whole-food, nutrient dense, non-processed and full of a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables. However, this ideal diet is not the reality for the majority of Americans. Insufficient levels of micronutrients can compromise the essential functions of cells, glands and organs, and thus a high-quality multi-vitamin/mineral can indeed be beneficial. Instead of a one-size-fits-all multi-vitamin/mineral approach, intracellular micronutrient testing determines which vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants your body really needs. This blood test used by functional medicine practitioners ascertains whether micronutrient levels are adequate, borderline or insufficient. Additionally, cells are placed under oxidative stress and various antioxidants are added to assess which best protect the cells from damage or death. The results of this test inform the patient to take only those nutrients which optimize cellular function. Many doctors advise patients against supplements, viewing them as a waste of money. Some of this criticism is well-deserved as there are many worthless products on the market. Many standard vitamin/mineral products feature cheap forms of micronutrients that are less bioavailable, meaning they are either not well-absorbed or have to be converted into a more useable form. For example, cyanocobalamin is the form of B12 commonly found in supplements, but this synthetic B12 is less bio-active than methylcobalamin. Similarly, calcium carbonate often appears in supplements but calcium hydroxyapatite, the form of calcium found in bone, is more bioavailable. An article published in Open Heart found that microcrystalline hydroxyapatite produces less of a spike in blood calcium levels compared to calcium salts typically used in standard supplements, and so may be less likely to increase coronary risk and vascular calcification. Consumers can easily fall prey to marketing that promotes a product as natural and good for you. Consider the popular over-the-counter supplement

company that features the word “Nature” and a green leaf in its logo. Repeatedly, we’ve found this company utilizes inferior forms of vitamins/minerals in addition to fillers like soybean oil. This poor-quality oil is refined, genetically modified, pro-inflammatory and should be avoided. Before you buy supplements without therapeutic benefit or possibly do harm with inferior products, we can help you choose high-quality, cost-effective nutritional supplements that are right for you. We offer intracellular micronutrient testing which will help decide whether you’d benefit most from a multi-vitamin/mineral or more targeted nutrition therapy. Curaleaf:

A Bright Future for Cannabis in Florida

R

ight in the middle of the plant nurseries in Homestead, Florida, is Curaleaf ’s cannabis grow operation where a group of passionate mavericks runs the joint: Jorge Grimany (Master Grower), Nelson Banzo (Administrator), Frank Díaz (Quality and Compliance), and Carlos Bucarito (Botanical Engineer). Inside the protected location, reggae tunes play in the corridor leading to different rooms of the cannabis cultivation in its multiple stages. “Some of us have families in Latin America who are very concerned—they think we’re in the drug business,” says Jorge, laughing. The 32-year-old has been with Curaleaf for over three years; he initially joined as an IT Engineer, making his way up the ladder until he was put in charge of the growing operations. “It’s hard for our relatives to understand because back home cannabis is still very illegal,” he concludes. Though medical cannabis is legal in Florida since Amendment 2 passed in 2016, the taboo still lingers, especially in Latino communities that are more conservative and have experienced first-hand the destruction trail of the war on drugs in their home countries. But this doesn’t bother Jorge; he’s more concerned for the 30,000 plants he tends to. Today, he’s part of a growing industry serving upwards of 447,000 patients. The first step to becoming a patient is visiting a registered doctor like Dr. Michelle Weiner, specializing in pain management and physical medicine rehabilitation at Spine and Wellness Centers of America. She’s also chair of Florida’s Medical Cannabis Advisory Committee and an activist closely involved with NORML’s local chapter. “Weekly, we’re getting around 11,000 new submissions,” said Dr. Weiner as she stated the main qualifying conditions, enrolling me in the Medical Marijuana Unique Registry (MMUR); all that was left was paying the $75 registration and wait 7-10 days for processing. In Florida, patients have a wide selection of formats and are allowed to purchase up to six 35-day supplies that didn’t exceed 2.5 ounces of smokable herb—flower, vape, topical, or tincture. These are still the early days of the industry in the sunshine state, but what’s clear is that brands entering the scene are focused on iterating within the medicinal market in preparation for the moment when recreational marijuana is finally approved. For now, being a patient and walking into a Curaleaf dispensary to legally purchase cannabis feels liberating. Learn more at Curaleaf.com.

The Importance of Finding “Your Thing”

I

was about 57 seconds into Ram Dass’ lecture, Here We All Are, and I already had so many thoughts that I had to pause it. He begins by talking about singing, playing instruments, dancing and painting, and then he says, “but my thing is words.” I honestly don’t know what the rest of the audio contains because I went completely off on this tangent, exploring the importance of the “thing.” So, what is the “thing” and how do you know when you’ve found it? I would say it’s your spark, where you find yourself, but can also get lost when immersed in it. That which makes you feel alive and connected. You find it by experimenting with different things, putting yourself out there, trying new stuff. Becoming aware of what speaks to you, what puts you in the zone, what unravels your creative energy. It doesn’t have to be an epic production or massive endeavor. Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. What it does have to be is something you enjoy, brings you back to the moment and lights up your appreciation. What makes it so important? Well, I’d say that, apart from the fire that it makes us feel within, it also fuels our motivation and gives us a haven to run to when everything else seems off. It allows us to have that space, our space.

What if we haven’t found it? No biggie, that’s OK, too. Don’t feel disappointed. We are all in the process of living and learning about ourselves. Let’s just keep looking. It’s the “polishing of the diamond,” as I like to call it. Life, after all, is unfolding for us in its perfect timing and with all its turns, gifting us those opportunities to gain insight and most importantly, shine our true selves. So here is what I propose: watch for the things that light you up, make you feel free and give you that sensation of being more… YOU! Then, do more of that. And remember, “your thing” is yours to live, yours to determine, and yours to share whenever and with whomever you like. Cheers to shining your light! Understanding your biases may help you avoid questionable calls in the heat of the financial moment.

Coping with Market Volatility:

Understand How Biases Can Affect Investment Decisions

W

hen it comes to your finances, "go with your gut" might not be the wisest adage to follow. In fact, it may work against you, particularly in periods of market turbulence. Before jumping to conclusions about your finances, consider what biases may be at work beneath your conscious radar. Recency bias refers to the tendency for recent events to have a stronger influence on your decisions than more distant events. For example, when the market was in the midst of an 11-year bull run, you may have increased your investments in equities, hoping to take advantage of any further gains. By contrast, if you were severely burned by market performance during the past several weeks, you may be hesitant about continuing or increasing your investments once the market settles down. Consider that neither of these perspectives may be entirely rational given that investment decisions should be based on your individual goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. Loss-aversion bias describes the tendency to fear losses more than celebrate equivalent gains. For example, you may experience joy at the thought of finding yourself $5,000 richer, but the thought of losing $5,000 might provoke a far greater fear. Loss aversion could cause you to hold on to a losing investment too long, with the fear of turning a paper loss into a real loss. In a down market, of course, most of your investments may show paper losses, so you might consider whether you are holding on to an investment that would be wise to sell within the context of your overall strategy. It's only natural to be concerned when the market drops. But expecting volatility and having a sound financial strategy in place may be the best

defense when events roil the markets. This might also help prevent you from making investment decisions influenced by biases. If you think you might be basing your decisions on biases rather than facts, contact us. We can offer an important third-party perspective. All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and there is no guarantee that any investment strategy will be successful. Although there is no assurance that working with a financial professional will improve investment results, a professional can evaluate your objectives and available resources and help you consider appropriate long-term financial strategies.

life in the stars

H E A LT H , W E A LT H & H A P P I N E S S

Spring is such a wonderful time of year! March begins with a strong focus on work, finances and productivity. It’s time for action after what might have been a sluggish start to 2021. Fiery Mars moves into the intellectual sign of Gemini, as the Sun moves into Aries, bringing a new energetic approach to life. The full Moon in Libra on March 28 gives us a chance to step back and spend time with those we love. We’ll be getting out to enjoy the sunshine! April is characterized by the square between Aries and Neptune; in addition, the Sun shifts into grounded Taurus, highlighting the need to remain focused on personal goals. With the full Moon in Scorpio on April 27, deep feelings may come to the surface, so those who are looking for love might meet that special someone!
