Into the Wild When you think of Florida, most people only think of our stunning beaches on both sides of our coasts. However, our core, the land between the Gulf and the Atlantic, is really the heart and soul. Florida is home to so many wild animals that are diminishing, right before our eyes. With massive population increases, the need for more housing and urban growth, we are expanding and encroaching on what little is left of untouched land. More people means more traffic and more deaths of our wildlife, unfortunately.

In this issue, we’re showcasing the wild animals of Florida through the lens of photographer, George McKenzie. His camera trap photographs animals being animals in their natural habitats, or what’s left of them. George, and many others, are determined to help lead the way to protecting these natural habitats and the animals that call Florida home… from the elusive Florida panther, black bears, bobcats, and so many more, including 12

the scrub jay! We hope you are inspired as much as we are.

I’ve lived in Florida my entire life and have spent more of my time outside exploring Florida than inside a building. I love being out in nature and to this day, I have yet to see a Florida black bear or a panther. I’ve only seen a fox or a bobcat a handful of times. It’s very sad to think that one day, if we don’t do something now to protect these animals, we may never see them again.

As our days and nights become cooler, I hope to spend more time outside exploring even more of our amazing and diverse outdoors. I hope you’ll join me and get outside. Take a walk in nature, listen to the sounds of the birds, and breathe the fresh air. It’s good for the mind, body, and soul. It’s hard to believe this year is almost over. We are so thankful for all of you!

The

Bigger Picture

In Search of the Elusive Panther: A Journey from Brooklyn’s Streets to Florida’s Wild Wilderness Leaving behind the iconic brownstones of Bed-Stuy in Brooklyn was no easy feat. In December 2021, a dream pulled me from the concrete jungle of New York City to the swamps of South-Central Florida. Awaiting me was an opportunity with the Path of the Panther project, a camera trap tech job that I’d eagerly applied for. With a heart full of ambition and the weight of the unknown, I sold whatever didn’t fit into a suitcase or my immediate reality and boarded the Amtrak at Penn Station, NYC. Destination: Sebring, Florida. The 29-hour journey was more than just a physical relocation—it was a leap of faith. Both exhilarating and petrifying, this decision transformed my life in ways I couldn’t have fathomed.

My preconceived notions of Florida, mostly garnered from popular culture and distant vacation memories, were about to be shattered.

This wasn’t the touristy Florida known for its beaches and theme parks. It was wild Florida.

The dense, whispering swamps of the Everglades, the rhythmic chorus of critters at night, and the magnificent beauty of the panther—this was a world away from the urban rhythms of Brooklyn.

As days turned into weeks and weeks into months, I immersed myself in the intricate art of camera trapping. From positioning to patience, I learned the nuances that went into capturing nature’s most candid moments. And the rewards? Priceless images of majestic black bears, elusive panthers, and the raw, untamed beauty of the Florida Everglades.

But it wasn’t just about the wildlife.

South-Central Florida introduced me to a community like no other. People who shared my passion, my curiosity, and my quest for understanding. The friendships I forged, bonds grounded in shared adventures and mutual respect, are ones that will last a lifetime.

One such unforgettable experience was attending my very first rodeo. The thrill of the event, the camaraderie of the crowd, and the surprising joy of riding a horse—not just any horse, but a cracker horse—is etched in my memory.

Then, there was the unexpected gift that Florida gave me: love. Here, amidst the backdrop of nature’s raw beauty, I found my heart resonating with another. Falling in love with my girlfriend added another layer to my Florida story, making it even more special.

This journey has been so much more than a geographical shift. It’s been transformative, illuminating parts of me I never knew existed.

I’ve grown, evolved, and emerged as a more enlightened version of myself.

Today, as I reflect on my time here, I realize that Florida has imprinted on my soul. It’s no longer just a place; it’s an emotion, an integral chapter in the story of my life. No matter where the winds of fate take me next, Florida, with its swamps, its panthers, its friendships, and its love, will forever hold a treasured place in my heart.

For a camera trap tech, the Path of the Panther Project journey starts the day before the actual fieldwork. Gear? Checked and ready. By the time dawn’s first light hints at the horizon, I’m already en route. My path? The untouched expanses of the North and the alluring Everglades.

On any given day, they capture a tapestry of the wild—black bears, white-tail deer, wild turkeys, and even, sometimes, the wandering cow. Nature’s diversity on full display.

Walking alone in such remote areas, every step pulsates with both the thrill of discovery and that tinge of uncertainty.

Will today be the day a bear decided to inspect my equipment? Or maybe it’s the day I capture that perfect panther prowl?

Back at base, the adventure morphs but doesn’t end. Two weeks, analyzing every frame.

Among those countless shots, the dream is to find the ones that truly captivate—the stories that capture nature in its raw, untamed glory.

Deep in the wild or at my desk, the journey with these creatures—panthers and beyond—is unending. And that’s precisely how I like it.

George McKenzie, Jr. Capturing Florida’s Wild Wilderness

George McKenzie, Jr. is The LiveWildly Adventurist and a National Geographic Explorer from Brooklyn, New York, who specializes in wildlife, natural history, and conservation. George has over 10 years of experience and is well-versed in producing stories with an impact that focuses on human interests around the world. His latest project, based in Lake Placid, Florida, is capturing Florida’s wildlife.

His commercial clients include entities such as FjallRaven, Honda, Tribeca Film Festival, RedBull, HBO, and Nike. His editorial and non-profit clients have included National Geographic Magazine, Honda, NYC Salt, and National Geographic Society.

The Road to Backus Museum ALWAYS LEADS TO HOME AND CONTINUES TO GROW ORGANICALLY

I

n an era when people are asking for real and authentic things, you can’t get much more of either than the Backus Museum in Fort Pierce. It’s a beautiful riverside museum built to honor native son, Bean Backus, and his incredible Florida landscape art. Like Bean himself, it’s multi-layered and so much more.

Bean grew up in Fort Pierce in the early 1900s when becoming an artist wouldn’t have been the usual career path. It was, after all, a small agricultural town in Florida. He persevered, painting signs, going into the military, and learning about the world and life. From all accounts, Bean already had a generosity of spirit. His studio was open to all and that’s where one of the most interesting twists in the tale takes place. When, of course, is another part of the equation. In mid-century Florida, he welcomed artists of all colors and ethnicities into his studio – his home. After all, an artist is an artist.

It became a haven for people and that brought a Fort Pierce art teacher, Zenovia Jefferson, to his door with her talented pupil, Alfred Hair. Alfred became Bean’s student. Alfred brought more of his friends to the Backus Studio. Over time, they became a group of artists selling Florida dreamscapes up and down the roads of the Sunshine State during the 1960s.

Incredibly prolific and successful, they too had an unusual career path. Coined “The Highwaymen” in the mid 1990s, their vintage paintings became treasures leading many of the Highwaymen artists to resume painting in the early 2000s. The Backus Museum was there hosting successful Highwaymen festivals and shows.

Marshal Adams is the Director of the Backus Museum. Like Backus, he is a kind and talented man who loves bringing art to his community. The museum hums with volunteers, visitors, good cheer, and vivid Backus and Highwaymen paintings, as well as different art shows throughout the season.

Each year Roger Lightle, an esteemed Vero Beach Highwaymen collector and dealer, displays part of his incredible collection at the Backus. People come to see both schools of art. Some fall in love with Backus, others with the Highwaymen, and some end up collecting both.

Then, there’s the organic part. This art museum and its community continues to live, grow, and flourish. Recently, Gordon Wilkins, a curator from the Boston area Addison Gallery of American Art came to the Backus to learn more about Bean Backus and the Highwaymen.

He stayed for four days and was amazed at the movement and its part in this community.

Bean would have loved it. He was not only an artist but a farmer, forever scattering his seeds of love, knowledge and art… and his generational garden continues to flourish and remain relevant.

Ringing the Bell Farewell IN MEMORY OF OUR COMPASSIONATE COLONEL, MARTY ZICKERT

M

arty Zickert was bigger than life and everyone loved him. And he loved the community back. Whether it was helping fellow veterans, volunteering to do taxes, raising money for non-profits, or helping others to volunteer, this was his community and he lived and breathed Indian River County.

We lost Colonel Zickert this

summer, but his presence and smile will be felt for many years to come.

The memories and tales of Marty are many. John Jetson, a fellow Air Force Vet and the founder of Jetson Appliance Electronics Mattresses, was a big fan. Colonel Zickert would suit up in his blue Air Force uniform for any veterans event that Jetson’s was holding.

At the Celebration of Life for John

Jetson in 2020, Colonel Zickert once again suited up, to say goodbye to his friend.

Commissioner Laura Moss met Marty when she was Mayor of Vero Beach in 2016. He was the President of the Veterans Council and between them, they were able to do good for the community. It became their ongoing mission.

During the record-breaking heat of July, hundreds came out to the Memorial Island event to say goodbye to Colonel Zickert. His fellow vets and the community were there to eulogize a man larger than life. This was the man who brought the Blue Angels to Vero

Beach. Mike Zickert is Marty’s son.

The father and son duo had lunch once a week for the last ten years.

You would see them at different area restaurants laughing, loving, and enjoying each other's company.

As Mike told me, “Dad was a star.

He knew everyone. It was like being in an entourage. He had a good run.”

They would ring the bell for Marty Zickert every time he came to Walking Tree Brewery. If you hear a bell ringing, it’s for our town angel, Marty Zickert.

s we all begin to gather for the holidays, many of us will travel back to our childhood homes to celebrate with family and friends. Have you ever looked around and wondered what stories your family home would tell if the walls could talk? Well, I have and wrote a book about it!

My family home in Scituate, Massachusetts, has been in our family for five generations. Built in 1847, it started out as a small farm-

house with no indoor plumbing or electricity. My grandparents inherited it when they were married in the 1930s and the house has slowly grown alongside my family over the years. My mother was born there, as were my siblings and my sister’s children. My grandfather and my grandmother died in the rooms. My parents still live there today, and it remains a central gathering point for my siblings, cousins, second cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. It truly is our family “home” in every sense of the word.

The stories my mother told me growing up inspired me to write this novel. While it is fiction, it is based on the biography of my home and the people that lived there. Some are actual events (embellished and dramatized) and others are solely a figment of my imagination. All of the story is told with deep love and respect for each and every family member represented.

In this novel, “Becoming Home,” the house narrates its own story, revealing deep secrets held within its walls. It tells of its birth in 1847, its growth over the decades, the joys, tragedies, love, and heartbreak experienced within its walls. The story begins with present day as Caroline Freeman and her siblings return to their family home to face the difficult decision of what to do with the house after the death of their beloved mother. The reader is then taken back and forth from present to the past. The house takes the reader on an emotional journey through the generations, laying bare its secrets, and revealing just

how much is at stake. This is the love story of Edward and Evelyn Freeman who are the first to make the old farmhouse a true home.

Homeschool: A Pocket Full of Questions “IT IS THE QUESTION THAT HOLDS THEIR ATTENTION. IF THEY HAVE NO QUESTION, IT IS HARDER TO PAY ATTENTION. THINKING IS ENTERTAINING.” ~ LEIGH BORTINS

re not questions like keys that unlock all sorts of gifts?

What if you were never asked by another, your name, your interests, your homeland? How very little one would discover of the many things you hold dear. I met a delightful lady, who in a surprisingly short span of time,

made me feel deeply valued. Besides finding her easy to talk with, her uncommon questions drew us into a heart-connecting conversation.

Had not her sincere questions, accompanied with a warm smile inquired, perhaps we would not be friends today. My new friend has a gift for asking questions.

“I always encourage my children to have a pocket full of questions wherever they go.”

Her wisdom made me think about the importance of questions.

Perhaps a pocket full of questions are what our children need most as they embark on new discoveries?

How can questions be incorporated into the daily homeschool routine?

Imagine you and your child (any age) going about life’s daily tasks, engaged in thought provoking conversation. You, the teacher, asking questions that delight the heart, and your pupil presently embarks on thoughts never journeyed. One question simply sparking a new quest. It’s almost too simple, and the subjects to discuss are endless. I asked my

6 and 11-year-old boys to select a topic and took guidance from the Classical 5 Common Topics (Definition, Relationship, Comparison, Circumstance, and Testimony).

My eldest selected verbs.

Wonderful! I hid my excitement and began the inquiry. Let’s define a verb. My eldest rattled off the definition. What is a verb used for?

Can you have a sentence without a verb? What is the difference of verbs in French, Latin, and English?

If you are learning a language, is it helpful to know more verbs or adjectives? What is your favorite verb? What’s a silly verb? How do you identify a verb in the sentence?

My questions do not have to be answered correctly; my job is to ask another question based on their answers to help them think through their understanding of the subject.

Leigh Bortins, in her book, The Question, suggests “It is the question that holds their attention.

If they have no question, it is harder to pay attention. Thinking is entertaining.” Who would have thought my six-year-old would be giggling and engaged in a conversation about verbs? More than filling up their minds with information, I hope in our daily discourse to engage them in the pleasantness of thinking. A pocket full of questions can be taken anywhere: on a car ride, when meeting new friends, at the dinner table, while folding laundry, or cuddling on the couch. What questions will your family enjoy?

Wild Florida PIRATES EXPLORING OUR LOCAL ECOSYSTEM

T

he concept of “wild Florida” conjures a spectrum of images that stretch from mirth to terror. Whether it’s the seemingly prehistoric creatures rising from the marshes in the Everglades or shenanigans in Tallahassee, our home is never boring. The Marine Biology program at Saint Edward’s School seeks to capture all that is wild and wonderful for our students in every division.

In the Lower School, the smallest Pirates start their scientific journey with marine mammal studies, later watching chicken eggs evolve into proud hens who provide fresh eggs for our community, and nurturing butterfly and

vegetable gardens to get realtime appreciation for the salad that stands between them and a treat after dinner. By the end of middle school, students have clocked so many hours in field biology that they can name every bird species that calls the Indian River Lagoon home, not to mention the terranean and aquatic critters who reluctantly contribute to the life cycle of the birds.

Every student on campus, no matter what the age, logs time in the lagoon, identifying species, growing shellfish, dedicating time to coastal clean-ups, and tracing the behavior patterns of some of the larger species who call the

lagoon home. Within the first week of school, Upper School students master kayaking and water safety skills, so they can take their education beyond the docks and into the mangroves and the spoil islands that beckon from the beach.

Science Department Chair, Meghan Buckley, believes “Students understand by reading, but they develop appreciation and passions by doing. They need to see and do science outside to understand what's happening all around them and make connections to their lives.

Our goal is to develop both by joining our beautiful campus with our passionate dedicated faculty.”

We love all that is wild on the Treasure Coast, and the proof lies in the fact that 21% of Saint Edward’s School’s students have at least one parent (or grandparent) who attended the school, which

means generations of Pirates are deeply committed to learning the lessons offered by this incredibly unique ecosystem.

BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE HOMEMADE HOT COCOA There’s nothing that goes together with the cool onset of winter quite like a delicious cup of homemade hot cocoa. This little cup of warmth will be sure to keep you just as toasty on the inside as you’re feeling on the outside, with only a few small extras tossed into your favorite holiday mug.

2 tbsp cocoa powder 1 cup granulated sugar 2 cups half and half 2 cups milk, divided Splash of vanilla Candy cane Mini marshmallows Place the cocoa powder and sugar in a medium saucepan; mix together. Turn heat to medium-high. Mix in 1/2 cup milk (it's okay if the mixture is lumpy).

Stir until mixture bubbles. Allow to boil for a minute or two, stirring continually, until no longer grainy.

Mix in the remaining milk and half and half. Add the vanilla. Continue to stir until hot chocolate reaches desired warmness.

Serve immediately.

For added fun, don’t forget to add a candy cane. Try experimenting with different extracts and spices to create your unique hot chocolate flavors!

D

esigning spaces often centers around studying floor plans and elevations, but the three dimensional volume of a space defines the experience and "feel" within it. The ceiling performs the critical role of defining the height, proportion, form, and character of the spatial volume. Tall ceilings and double-height spaces create drama and signal significance of the room or zone they define. Vaulted ceilings add height and draw attention upward while easily transitioning to lower flat ceilings. Lower ceilings create more intimate space, and fluctuations in ceiling height can effectively define zones within open plan layouts. While the low, flat ceiling has found itself out of style, it too can create drama and add importance to nooks, crannies, and zones of pause.

Beyond height and volume, ceiling treatments add character and scale. Beams are associated with a rustic character, and coffers elevate a flat ceiling with sophistication and order. Open ceilings with exposed structure and ductwork lend an industrial and urban feel. The material of the ceiling plane, from paint to planking to mirrors further stock the inventory of possibilities for the often underestimated element overhead.

f you’re looking for an adrenaline rush while fishing, then targeting wahoo is the way to go. Known as one of the fastest fish in the ocean, the wahoo provides anglers with a challenging and thrilling fishing experience.

From South Florida to almost every Caribbean Island, you can find wahoo lurking in depths of 180 feet to over 1000 feet.

These fish tend to gather around structures, such as wrecks, reefs, and volcanic formations. In the Caribbean, anglers commonly fish the “drop” which refers to the volcanic structure surrounding these islands. These underwater volcanic formations provide the

perfect hunting ground for wahoo.

In South Florida, finding wahoo often involves locating wrecks, reefs, and following the current.

The wahoo is known for its speed and agility in the water, with some being caught at speeds upwards of 20 knots. Anglers must be prepared for these fish to make fast runs and quick turns during the fight. High speed fishing for wahoo is not for the faint-hearted.

You need to be equipped with the right gear to reel in this elusive fish.

This type of fishing involves using trolling leads and large double hooked lures with steel cable leaders to prevent them from chaffing your line. To make sure you have enough power to handle a wahoo, use a reel that is at least 50w and greater.

One of the best tactics for catching wahoo is planer fishing.

With this technique, you’re trolling at a normal speed; depending on which size planer you are using and whether you’re using braid or mono, decides how far down your bait is swimming. Wahoo like to suspend on top of reef or structure, so running a planer will get your bait down to where they hang out.

They will feed on the surface when the moons are right but typically you catch them below the surface.

Overall, targeting wahoo provides a unique and challenging fishing experience. Whether fishing the volcanic structures of the Caribbean, or the wrecks and reefs of South Florida, anglers must be prepared for a fast and exciting fight with one of the ocean's fastest fish.

’s not so common to see a flamingo in Florida, unless you have been to a zoo, down to the upper Everglades National Park, or St. Marks Wildlife Refuge area and seen one of the rare sightings. For decades, the majestic long-legged, graceful, strutting flamingos have not been a bird most would have seen. Then,

came Hurricane Idalia that passed between the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba on Sunday, August 28, 2023. After making landfall on Wednesday as a Category 3, in the Big Bend of Florida and continuing up the East Coast during this time, it was calculated that a large flock of flamingos, possibly in migration from the Yucatan, got knocked off course. Now, they are scattered either solitarily or in larger flocks, and are being seen all across Florida, the Carolinas, Alabama, Texas, and one as far north as Wisconsin! At first, many thought they were Roseate Spoonbills or American White Pelicans until they

got their binoculars or a camera out. Adults are primarily a beautiful pink with hints of black and white, and juveniles are more pale or even brown to grayish in color.

Some folks have been able to see these graceful birds at beachfront locations, where others, like myself and my daughter, took a long tumultuous hike deep into a salt marsh mud flat to see them.

What we set out for was considered a ‘wet-walk,’ meaning we would be on a trail, then off the beaten path to hike deep into the habitat.

After one last corner around the preserve point, we could finally observe a flock of 24 flamingos!

From our 200-yard distance, we enjoyed their peace and tranquility, all the while thinking about how they must be feeling about ‘where they were’ from the displacement.

If you get the chance to see them, please keep your distance, and try not to scare or displace them any further. They’ve already had quite a journey!

Many bird lovers, naturalists, enthusiasts, and photographers have been able to see the flamingos in special places. A dear friend of mine was kind enough to share some of her pictures for this article.

The little book holds a treasure trove of family recipes— all the Christmas goodies his family grew up with are typed up on little index cards. The three of them argue over what to make first; should they make peanut brittle?

While I am not a fan of any of these particular treats, it fills my heart to see the kids listen intently to the stories their dad shares with them about each recipe.

In the living room, I do my best to transform our little ranch house into a winter wonderland.

Home Alone keeps me company as I string lights and hang ornaments on our tree, and set up one of the

many nativity sets I have been given over the years. Decorating has become one of my favorite parts of this season. Some years I do it alone, some years my girls help. Every year though, with every ornament, knick-knack, and holiday song, I am reminded that we have so much to be grateful for. Every piece of ceramic and glass holds a special memory, and I cherish the chance to share them with my kids.

The holidays have become my favorite time to just slow down. We snuggle under warm blankets and sip hot chocolate while watching

It’s a Wonderful Life, and argue over whose rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy” is better. We each have our own Christmas song playlist, and we shuffle through Garth Brooks and George Strait, Pentatonix and Bing Crosby, traditional hymns and Brenda Lee. From Thanksgiving afternoon to New Year’s Day, you are almost guaranteed to hear holiday tunes coming from some room in our house without ceasing. Our elf that never just sits on a shelf returns from the North Pole, and her shenanigans keep us laughing until she departs once again on Christmas Eve. While our family traditions have changed over the years, our faith remains steadfast through the holiday season. Church programs take the place of company parties, and small get-togethers replace a house full of people. To me, the holidays aren’t about quantity, but rather, quality time spent with those we love, making new traditions, and giving thanks to our maker for another year’s worth of blessings.

things to do at the National Parks.

We haven’t done an airboat tour with the kids yet because they are very loud, and I’m not sure my one-year-old would sit still long enough, but it’s a very popular activity so we will try when he’s a little older.

Also, once they are old enough I plan on taking the kids on a slough slog, where you hike through the shallow, swampy water inside a cypress dome. If you’ve never done it before, I recommend going on a guided ranger walk.

EXPLORING THE EVERGLADES WITH KIDS

W

ith plenty of easy wildlife viewing, educational Ranger programs, and multiple modes to explore the park (boating, tram, airboat, kayaking, canoeing, driving, and hiking), Everglades National Park is a family’s paradise. The park has three entrances with lots of choices for adventure and exploration at each. So, I recommend doing your research and picking what best fits your family’s interests.

Here are a few of my tips and my favorite things to do with young kids (ages 4 and 1).

Go during the dry season, which runs from October to April.

The weather is not as hot, has less bugs and a lower humidity. Lower 64

water levels also means the animals tend to gather in large numbers at watering holes.

Hike the Anhinga Trail, which starts at the back of the Royal Palm Visitor Center. It’s an easy 0.8-mile loop and often has lots of alligators, turtles, snakes, and birds, like herons, egrets, anhingas, cormorants, purple gallinules, ospreys and more.

Hike the Gumbo Limbo Trail; this also starts at the back of the Royal Palm Visitor Center. It’s a path through a dense forest and includes a view of the Gumbo Limbo Tree, nicknamed the Tourist Tree because of its red, peeling bark.

Drive down to Flamingo and wander around the marina to find

American crocodiles and manatees.

I’ve never gone to Flamingo and not seen a basking crocodile or manatee swimming around. It’s also a good place to kayak or take a 90-minute boat tour.

Florida Crocs and Gators THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO

D

id you know that Florida is home to a species of crocodile? Yes, a crocodile.

In fact, South Florida is the only place in the world where you can find both a crocodile and alligator in the same area.

So, what’s the difference between the American crocodile and the American alligator?

While alligators have a more U-shaped snout, crocodiles have a more pointed or V-shaped one.

In addition, alligators are black, while crocodiles are usually a lighter grayish-brown. While

crocodiles can exist in both fresh and saltwater, American alligators prefer freshwater.

Alligators exist throughout the Southeastern U.S., but the American crocodile has a much narrower range, living along the coastline in South Florida, with most of them found in the Florida Keys. They have protected nesting habitats in Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge and the Turkey Point nuclear power plant canals.

One of my favorite places to watch crocodiles is in Flamingo, the southernmost headquarters of

the Everglades National Park. You can often find them basking on the boat ramps and hidden in the canals near the marina.

Crocodiles were once listed as endangered on the U.S. Endangered Species Act, when human population growth and development of coastal areas depressed crocodile population numbers, which dwindled down to around 200 individuals. However, while their population has since rebounded to about 2,000 animals, they are still currently listed as threatened species. Meanwhile, there are more than a million alligators living in Florida.

While they are normally shy and wary of humans, it’s still important to stay safe around both

crocodiles and alligators. Here are a few tips: • Never feed crocodiles or alligators—it is illegal. When fed, animals may become used to people and may be more likely to become a nuisance.

• Keep a safe distance when observing and photographing, including your pets.

• Keep pets on leashes and away from any body of water.

• Swim only in designated swimming areas, specifically during daylight hours.

Frequencies for Better Sleep HOW HEALY CAN HELP CREATE HEALTHIER SLEEP PATTERNS

T

urning off the mind is always a good idea; however, the mind is intrinsically linked with the psyche, the heart, and blood flow. So, even when we practice all the things that we know that are proven to help with sleep, such as turning off your phone and limiting screens before bed, daily meditation, or calming rituals like taking a bath, sometimes there might be a deeper issue in the body that needs tending to.

Falling into low beta sleep is step one, then falling into the deeper realms of sleep is where we get true rest. Those deeper sleep states is what most of us are missing when we wake up periodically throughout the night.

Something to pay attention to is if you find yourself waking up the same time each night at the same time. For example, 3AM to 5AM is when the lungs are detoxing, and you are meant to be in a stage of memory recovery and dreams. If you find yourself waking up between these hours each morning, you may have underlying grief or sadness that is bothering you, or you may have a condition in the lung area.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine we have a body clock. During a 24-hour period, Qi moves in two-hour intervals through the organ systems. During sleep, Qi draws inward to restore the body. This phase is completed

between 1AM and 3AM, when the liver cleanses the blood and performs a myriad of functions that set the stage for Qi moving outward again.

Trouble falling asleep can be due to an overstimulation of the mind, which is related to heart-blood deficiency and imbalance of yin. Have you ever experienced that moment where you realize you should be sleeping but your mind is racing? What else might be racing? Chances are your heart! You might get palpitations, have poor memory, and experience anxiety throughout the day. These are all signs and symptoms of heart-blood deficiency which will again, interfere with falling asleep!

This is where the brilliance of Healy comes in. Since sleep problems can be so complex, the answers are different for everyone.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary NURTURING WHAT’S WILD

estled amid the radiant expanse of South Florida, a haven for injured wildlife has thrived quietly for over four decades. The tale of the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary began in 1983 when a dedicated group embarked on a mission to provide refuge for Florida's injured wildlife. Today, this sanctuary has blossomed into a haven for creatures great and small, hailing from Florida and beyond.

The work undertaken at the sanctuary is a testament to dedication. It involves providing medical care to over 6,000 injured, sick, and orphaned wild animals each year, with the ultimate aim of reintroducing them to their natural habitats. Astonishingly, nearly 90% of these patients bear injuries inflicted by human activities, highlighting the pressing need for such sanctuaries. Furthermore, the sanctuary draws over 200,000 visitors annually, offering educational programs and captivating wildlife presentations.

In the 1990s, the Busch family, celebrated for their philanthropic conservation efforts, played a pivotal role in energizing the

sanctuary. In 1994, Peter Busch, now Chair of the sanctuary's Board of Directors, breathed new life into the organization with a generous gift from The Peter W. Busch Family Foundation, leading to the sanctuary's rechristening as the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary. Then, in 1998, Peter actively assisted in securing an expansive 11-acre campus through a strategic land lease partnership with the Loxahatchee River District. This move enabled a higher level of care for resident animals and created a more immersive visitor experience.

T

here is something magical that happens when we gather in joy and celebration, or in grief and sorrow. The coming together for a singular purpose creates a powerful energy shared among each other. There are threads being woven by a wiser and higher power, leaves being moved exactly as they may, and as much as we sometimes forget, everything is dancing to the tune of a perfect harmony, even chaos.

Our souls not only know this, but this becomes a much bigger part of the dance when we observe, when we see, and when we notice. In nature, the perfection of how things are meant to be becomes more than obvious; the synchrony is palpable. We don’t know or question why the wave came or how it did; it simply did and that is that. I suspect this is why we crave it so much. Simplicity and depth all in one.

There is nothing wrong with living in between worlds. God knows, some of the mundane pleasure and cheap thrills of the world also have a space and place to exist, but let us not forget for once, the sacred nature that holds and sustains us. Those delicate threads that make life so magical. The wild, the untamed, the majestic force nature is, and while we’re at it, our true nature. Especially that, let us not forget. If we have forgotten, may we seek and find ourselves again.

May we always know who we are, show up with authenticity, learn to be fully accepting of every piece that holds us together… even the wild and the untamed. May we be like nature, sometimes at peace, sometimes in rage, but ever present with all that is.
