WELL SAID
A Sunny Disposition
If you check social media, most of us “look” like we have a great life. However, in reality, life is tough. We have good days and bad days. Sometimes we just feel overwhelmed. We’ve all been touched by cancer, love, loss, sadness, anxiety, stress, depression, mental health issues, maybe even suicide—either directly or indirectly. How do we cope with life’s tragedies? How does it seem easier for some than others? Where do you get help? How can you be strong when you feel so weak? Every morning, we make a choice as to how we will “feel” today. Personally, I choose to look at life as a beautiful new challenge every day. After surviving breast cancer more than two years ago, I try to enjoy every second I’m on this gorgeous planet. Getting up early to watch the sun rise on the horizon is another day I get to celebrate life. It’s my time to rebalance, to spend quiet moments collecting and organizing my thoughts for the day. Because what if tomorrow never comes? There is still so much I plan to accomplish before my time is up. I can sleep when I’m dead, right?! In this issue, we’re celebrating life…after the storm. We hope to inspire you to live the life you dream of, love the ones you’re with, face obstacles and challenges head on, and get help if you need it. Remember, you are never alone. You are stronger than you think. We are community strong! There’s a reason you were put on this planet, so don’t give up. In the end, all we need is love, right?

LYNDSAY CUNNINGHAM has passions, lots of passions! She was raised riding horses and competing up and down the east coast. Then, she was a working student for Olympic level trainers, and in 2007 started her own eventing farm. Now, Cunningham runs a successful business training horses, teaching lessons, and traveling to horse shows. She is the official photographer for Treasure Coast Horse Show series at Point West and also travels to international competitions shooting the pros. “ Grief is like the ocean; it comes
in waves, ebbing and flowing. Sometimes the water is calm and sometimes it is overwhelming. All we can do is learn to swim.

Most days, we browse social media and everyone’s life looks fabulous, right? We tend to only post the good stuff, the glam. But let’s face it, there are some days when life isn’t so great. In an instant it changes. Our world crumbles. My mantra has always been, “30 seconds will change your life.” I have always tried to follow my own advice. I’m extremely paranoid about “what if.” What if something happens and we were in a disagreement and I never got to tell the person I loved them or I was sorry? We are all guilty of taking life for granted. Sometimes, we even take our loved ones for granted—our family, our dearest friends. There are days where I feel like a hamster on a wheel, just doing the best I can to just keep going and not fall off the wheel. I’m thankful for my friends and family that are there during these times to encourage me to keep going, to push on even when I feel like quitting, or worse, just giving up. Happy people are sad, too; they just don’t show it. No one likes to talk about dealing or coping with mental health issues or worse, death. Tragically, our community has dealt with some major losses over the last few years. The stories shared in this issue are real. They are painstakingly beautiful. The families have suffered great loss. Our community has suffered, too. Vero Beach is such a special place. The community here is like no other. It’s truly one big family. When someone suffers tragically, there is such an outpouring of love and support from everyone. I hope that as you read this issue, you’ll hug your loved ones a little tighter, you’ll let go of the little things that seem like big things and you’ll cherish all those that are in your life. As we celebrate our mothers and fathers on their special day, don’t wait to celebrate them just once a year, cherish them NOW. Because for some, tomorrow never comes.

ON YOUR DARKEST DAY, FIND A GLIMMER OF LIGHT
M
y husband, Sam Tripson, died of cancer when he was 33 years old. He had been in remission after a hard battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, but the cancer returned with a vengeance and he was gone three weeks later. Our children were so young and we had so much life left to live. Nothing I could ever write will fully express what an amazing man he was and what an enormous void he has left behind. His hat, his boots, his empty chair at the dinner table. There are gaping holes and reminders of him everywhere. My children keep me grounded to this life, but a part of my heart has gone with him into the next. And I think that’s OK. Sam and I met in middle school and were high school sweethearts. He has been a major part of my 18

life since I was 15 years old. There is no “moving on” from him. But I can and choose to move forward. Sam was always happiest when I was happy, and I feel like I’m honoring him by waking up each day and giving it my best shot. I took my first giant leap forward without him when I got pregnant with our last baby, six months after his death. In order to grow our family after Sam’s stem cell transplant at Memorial Sloan Kettering, we had to go through in vitro fertilization. After just one round, we had four beautiful embryos. The first transfer gave us our second child, Alice Ann (now 3), and our second attempt resulted in an early miscarriage. He relapsed right after that and was gone shortly after. www.portfolio-verobeach.com
Sam and I never really discussed his death beyond the normal worst case scenario planning couples talk about. But we did discuss our embryos. It was a very private and personal decision, but to us, they were our potential future family. We had a boy and girl name picked out for each one. So, as he laid there on that final day in the intensive care unit at Moffitt Cancer Center, I knew exactly what I was going to do. And when I was ready, with my mom and his mom next to me, I had our last two embryos transferred. A few weeks later, I learned I was pregnant with one healthy baby. The way I see it, I got one and Sam got one. We waited to find out the gender with our other two children and this one was no different. Nine months later, with my mom and his mom by my side, Lillie Belle Tripson entered the world. Letting go of one life, while welcoming another has left me broken in the most brutal, beautiful way. I’ve learned to lean on God and other people like never before and I’ve been humbled by the outpouring of love and support from family, friends and complete strangers in the community. is family dinner at his parent’s house, the house he grew up in. He was incredibly close with his younger sister, Charlotte, and older brother, Rob, and I love that my children get to learn about their dad from the insight only a sibling can provide. I’m thankful for our church family at First United Methodist. Going back to church without Sam was a huge hurdle for me, and even still, you can usually find me crying in a pew near the front. It doesn’t matter who’s sitting next to me, it’s not him and it repeatedly breaks my heart every Sunday. I was able to participate in their Grief Share study session a few months after Sam died and I found it to be incredibly healing. Though our losses varied, everyone in our small group was on a similar grief journey and it helped to deepen my overall understanding of grief, suffering, God and the importance of community. I also took advantage of the free counseling services offered through VNA Hospice. Our son Jack was about to start kindergarten, we had just moved in with my parents, and I was in my last trimester of pregnancy with Lillie Belle. It was a huge transition period for our family, and their wonderful counselors helped guide us through it. The VNA also sponsors a bereavement day camp for kids called Camp Chrysalis that Jack was able to attend. There, he met other kids who’ve lost a loved one and learned how to put complicated feelings into words. All of these things have helped me learn and grow through the pain of losing Sam, but even so, life without him is hard. I miss him everyday. I pray my children grow up knowing just how much their dad loved them and fought to stay alive for them. I search their little faces all the time for signs of him. They are my absolute joy, and it breaks my heart that they will grow up in this life without their dad. I worry that I won’t be enough for them. Even surrounded by wonderful grandfathers, uncles, fraternity brothers and friends, no one will ever take Sam’s place, and I’m trying to make peace with that. I try to remind myself that I will never be able to make this life perfect for them. I will never be perfect for them. Trials are certain to come and throw them and their well-made plans completely off course. I pray my willingness to rely on my family, my community and my faith through life’s storms will help them to navigate their own someday. I hope that even on their darkest days, they’re still able to find a glimmer of light. And if they truly can’t find it, please God, give them the courage and strength to be it. I can tell them these things, but we all know how well children listen to their parents. I figure my best chance at having this sink deep into their little souls is to try to live it. I decided early on in my grief that I would live this life for my children. That I would live it for Sam. And somewhere along the way, I might even start living it for me. www.portfolio-verobeach.com

THOUGH I HAVE FALLEN, I WILL RISE~ SURVIVING WIDOWHOOD
I
t has almost been a year since I watched my husband walk out the front door for the last time. I wish I could remember whether or not I gave him a kiss that morning. He went to play a game of basketball and never came back. Nothing could have prepared me for the moment two policemen showed up at my door and uttered the words that shattered my world: “He didn’t make it.” There was no warning. Thirty-two year olds aren’t supposed to have heart attacks. I should have known that Jon was something special when, within the first hour or so of meeting him, he managed to get me to sing. I’m a writer, not a singer. But there I was, singing for this handsome guy I had just met. Any other time singing by myself in front of a stranger would have been an anxiety ridden nightmare. From the first hour that I met him, Jon had a way of putting me at ease. It was so easy to fall in love with him. He was kind and charismatic. He made my life exciting and wonderful, but most of all, it was so clear that he cared very deeply for me. He was also an amazing singer. Had I known how talented he was, no amount of begging or convincing would have succeeded in getting a single note out of me that first night. My life was soon filled with the sound of his singing. He sang to me on our first date, at my grandfather’s funeral and my sister’s wedding.

When we married a year and a half later he continued to sing, in the car, in the shower and sometimes even right in the middle of our conversations. We decided to start a family and our beautiful daughter was born in 2015. As the first-born daughter in my family, I was named after my father. We decided to continue the tradition and name her after Jon, a decision I am so grateful for. I loved watching Jon rise to the call of fatherhood. He was so attentive and supportive during my pregnancy, and in spite of having no experience with babies, he took an equal part in caring for our little girl. She was a colicky baby and when she would cry, he would walk with her and sing songs until she finally fell asleep. It’s often said that once a baby comes along, the marriage begins to suffer. That was not my experience. I fell in love with him all over again, deeper than ever before. Around the same time that we started our family, Jon began to take his talent and passion for music seriously. In doing so, he was able to make performing his full-time job. Seeing him do what he loved to do and get paid for it brought such joy to my heart. Things became even more exciting when he got encouraging feedback from a celebrity couple who saw him perform. It got us both hoping that his dream to become a recording artist could possibly become a reality. They advised Jon to start writing his own songs so we immediately got to work. Jon was the music, I was the lyrics. Together we

made a great team. I loved our song writing sessions. It was a challenge we could meet together and some of my favorite moments of our final year. It had been a busy couple of months. We celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary, our daughter’s first birthday, and Jon was getting more and more singing gigs. We were both tired and looking forward to spending a couple days together at the end of the week. But the weekend never came. Even though I’m a writer, I don’t know any combination of words that could adequately convey how I felt the day my husband died and the months that followed. It was like all of my insides had been ripped out from within me and I was forced to continue as a shell of a person, living through waves of numbness and agony. Somehow, I survived that first week, planning the funeral and making decisions no 27-year-old is ever supposed to have to make. And then, a couple days after the funeral, I was hit with another blow: two faint pink lines on a pregnancy test. I wept against the bathroom sink through the wee hours of the morning until the sun came up and I had to face yet another drastic change to my life. We hadn’t been trying. It took us five months to conceive our daughter. Finding out that I was pregnant felt like a cruel joke. I was now a single mother of not just one, but two children. How was I supposed to provide for them? Where were we going to live? How was I going to work? I had to not only deal with the suffocating grief of losing my husband, but also the physical, mental and emotional effects of carrying his child. The first six months after losing Jon and discovering my pregnancy were like an out of body experience or as close to insanity as I can imagine. My pregnancy eliminated the more harmful coping options. As much as I wanted to drink myself numb, I had to find alternate means of managing my pain. I began blogging through the pain. I’ve never been good at opening up to people, but I decided to let everyone see my heart bleed through my words. I chose to be transparent with my struggles with both my emotions and my faith. The initial response was an outpouring of love and support, but as time went on I was surprised to find that many people were being encouraged and validated in their own journeys through my writing. The discovery that my healing process was bringing support to others gave me purpose and meaning to my struggle. My son’s name means “God has given light” because that is what he is, God’s gift of light in my darkest hour. He is 3 months old and spends the whole day laughing and smiling. He and my 2-year-old daughter have given me the motivation to keep fighting forward. I couldn’t let myself fall apart, I had to come through for them. It’s nearly been a year since I lost Jon and while I still have struggles, I am no longer shattered. I’ve picked up the pieces and in the process, have changed into a new person. I’ve become steady, stronger and more compassionate. I’ve come through the storm with my faith in God and hope for the future intact. I will continue to write my blog and have decided to put my journey into a book. I’m also starting to speak about my experience. It is my heart to continue to bring light and hope to others in their time of darkness. I’ve ended all of my blogs with verses, so I will end this with the verse that defines my first year of widowhood: “Though I have fallen, I will rise. REFLECTING ON INNER HEALTH
I
n today’s world, particularly with the advent of social media and the rage of “selfie” photos, many of us are concerned about our outward appearance. Some spend hours each week exercising, eating right, fixing hair, makeup and wardrobe so that we look the best we possibly can. We all want to be loved and made to feel special, and we do so by improving our physical appearance. Often times, we neglect our inner selves, particularly our emotions and mental health. If we come down with a cold or infection, we have no problem going to a doctor to get help. However, if we have anxiety or depression, are we as willing to seek help? Mental illness affects 43.8 million people or one in five adults in the U.S. in a given year, but only 41 percent of these people receive mental health treatment for their illness. Many people don’t realize they have a mental illness. Family and friends are the first to notice. Once confronted, some people will voluntarily get help. Others require more aggressive action and may need to be ordered by the court system to seek treatment. Getting a diagnosis for mental illness is just the first step. The types and severity of mental illness vary from anxiety and depression to schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Treatments vary by diagnosis and by person, and the options can include medication, counseling (therapy), social support and education. I’ve personally experienced the terrible plight of mental illness with several of my family members. As a child, I was severely abused by family members who had untreated mental illness. I had no support or mentors and lived in the unstable atmosphere until I was old enough to move out the house. I later distanced myself from these family members, but their conditions escalated out of control. When one threatened to kill another and then themselves, I had to step in and help. That’s when I began to learn about the levels of support and treatment for those who are mentally ill and also for services offered to their caregivers. We are fortunate that Indian River County has several organizations that help people with mental illness. I have one family member who has been under the care of New Horizons of the Treasure Coast for the last 12 years. Her condition has deteriorated in recent years, and I was at my wits end as to what I could do to help her more. Finally, I learned that New Horizons has a case management system. This has opened up new doors, and I’m feeling so much more relieved. The case managers can help establish linkages with community agencies and services, assist with finding and maintaining supportive housing if needed, and provide education to not just the patient, but to families and caregivers as well. New Horizons recently opened a Learning Center which provides life skills, training and job readiness classes to mentally ill clients helping them to be more productive citizens in our community. The Mental Health Association in Indian River County offers free screenings, consultation for family members, crisis intervention and referrals. My mentally ill family member recently started to participate in their Drop-In Center called Our House where she can socialize with others, participate in fun events, as well as attend classes. They also have a Walk-In Center staffed by licensed mental health professionals or supervised mental health professionals in training. We are all so involved with our busy lifestyles that we often forget to look within ourselves and evaluate our emotional well-being. “ Some things in life you can’t fix. You just have “ to live through it. WEATHERING WIDOWHOOD
T
his is how Kathleen Fredrick, whose husband died unexpectedly three and a half years ago, has coped with the tragic loss of losing her best friend and the love of her life. Her husband, Gregory Fredrick, suffered a terrible brain hemorrhage and was put on life support. When Kathleen and her daughter Corinne made the unbearable decision to remove support, I was there in the hospital to do what I could to provide love and comfort during their time of this horrific loss. For the next several days after her husband’s death, Kathleen didn’t sleep, eat, or bathe. “My world ended,” she says. “I had no idea how to pick up the pieces.” She was surrounded by friends who did what they could to ease the pain. “People have no idea how to help, but want to,” says Kathleen. “My whole mind and body were shut down. I didn’t know what I wanted. I just needed people to think for me.” She suggests that friends of widows should first tell them that they love them and just be present. Then, go shopping for groceries; do laundry; hire a maid; or take the kids to soccer practice. “Widowed people are desperate to talk about their lost loved one. It won’t make them sad if you talk about their deceased spouse. They are already sad,” Kathleen explains. “Just share memories and funny stories about their loved one. It really helps.” Having the support of other widows is what finally helped Kathleen endure. She tried local widow grief counsel groups, but none provided her the tools she needed to survive the loss of her husband. Wide awake in the middle of the night, she went online and found Camp Widow®, a program of Soaring Spirits International which was founded by widowed people. It’s a weekend program hosted annually in three locations – Tampa, FL, San Diego, CA, and Toronto, Ontario. People come from around the world to meet other widowed men and women face-to-face, to experience camaraderie, and to gain the tools and resources they need to validate the uniqueness of every person’s grief recovery. Fifteen months after losing her husband, Kathleen attended her first Camp Widow® conference. She learned that each person must make a conscious choice to get help. The programs encouraged her to realize that she will live through the loss. At one program a woman asked another, www.portfolio-verobeach.com
“How long are you going to grieve for the loss of the love of your life?” The response was, “If you had your right leg amputated, how long would you miss it?” “It’s a process of angst,” Kathleen says. “You move forward, maybe just one step. There is no right or wrong answer.” Grateful for the help that Camp Widow® has given her, Kathleen now attends the programs to help and support others. “I’m happy now,” Kathleen says. “I don’t live in constant grief. I
t’s no surprise that I’m super close with my entire family. My brother, Cole, and I were best friends from the time he was born, a year after me. We did everything together; my first memories were with him. Two days after his 16th birthday, my family’s life was forever changed. Early in the morning of Sept. 27, 2014, while riding his bike with two friends, looking for a fishing spot, Cole was struck and killed by a drunk driver. At 2 am, I received a call saying my brother was hit and fell over the side of the 17th Street bridge, plummeting more than 125 feet into the Indian River Lagoon. Crying, I ran into my parents’ bedroom, telling them all that happened. They got dressed as fast as they could and headed to the scene while I stayed with my little sister, hoping she wouldn’t awake to a tragedy. They looked everywhere for Cole, screaming his name, searching the area under the bridge. All night, I prayed they would find my brother and he would come back to us alive. It wasn’t until three hours later that divers recovered his body. Around 5 am, my parents came home. My dad entered first, my mom a few feet behind him, making me assume she was helping Cole get back into the house. I saw the door shut behind her. My dad ran up to me, held me, and told me Cole was gone. Our lives are forever changed. We’ve lost one fifth of our family because of someone’s poor choice. This tragedy left me with a new sense of motivation and I started a non-profit, The LiveLikeCole Foundation. This foundation was created in honor of Cole and it stands for the person he was. He stuck up for people who were bullied; he was the most caring soul and would do anything to make someone feel welcome or put a smile on their face. I am the president of this organization, and my mission is to explain the importance of making good decisions and how one can take tragedy and turn it into something positive and help others. You don’t have to let tragedy define you in a negative way. You can grow and let it help you become a better person. I want my little sister, Mary, who is 11 years old, to see this so she knows we can still remember Cole while being strong and helping others. That’s what he would want us to do. LiveLikeCole is also dedicated to giving back to Vero Beach, the place Cole loved so much. We want to repay our community for all of their love and support. Our motto is, “Take ACTION, Spread KINDNESS.” We are hosting a golf tournament at Grand Harbor on June 17. n June 17, Windsor Member Kevin Bespolka and Windsor Gun Club Director Nicky Szápáry, along with six other cyclists, will cross 12 states and four time zones on a seven-day journey as part of The Race Across America. The two men are competing with team CYCLE FOR CAMERON in loving memory of the tragic passing of Kevin and Corinne Bespolka’s 16-year-old son, Cameron. Following Cameron’s death three years ago, his family founded the Cameron Bespolka Trust, a charity set up to empower today’s youth through the love of nature. Kevin, Nicky and their teammates will embark on this major journey across the country from Oceanside, CA and finish in Annapolis, MD, raising money to honor Cameron’s passion for nature. Funds raised will contribute to the renovation of a 17th-century cottage on a nature reserve in Staffordshire, England, to provide the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds with a permanent base for educational activities. Named “Cameron’s Cottage,” it will pay homage to his dedication to wildlife observation. “We’re proud to support Kevin and Nicky as they take on this physical challenge in Cameron’s memory,” says Betsy Hanley, president of Windsor. “As sponsors of their team, we wish them the absolute best as they raise awareness and funds for the Cameron

f you or someone you know is suffering, seek help. According to the American Psychiatric Association, half of all mental illness begins by age 14 and 75 percent begins by age 24. These illnesses do not appear suddenly, rather people such as family, friends, and others closely associated to the person suffering the illness, as well as the individual, begin to notice changes in feelings, emotions and behaviors.

LAGOON LIFE Only Rain Down the Drain

he Indian River Lagoon is North America’s most biodiverse estuary, spanning 156 miles along Florida’s east coast. Many of the most beloved sea creatures reside seasonally or year-round in the lagoon including Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, manatees and sea turtles. Every year, these and thousands of other species of plants and animals suffer from pollution that washes into the lagoon via stormwater runoff. May marks the start of the rainy season, which typically carries billions of gallons of rain into the Indian River Lagoon, along with lawn fertilizer, dog waste, pesticides, oil, litter, and more via organized canals, ditches, and storm drains. These are manmade structures built to protect our roadways from flooding, however they divert stormwater to the lagoon, pollution and all. Last December, an ailing sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle was rescued out of the lagoon near Sebastian by Coastal Division staff under an FWC permit. The turtle was quickly sent to the Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center for veterinary care. Due to this turtle’s timely rescue and ornery demeanor, she was named “Humbug” by the healing center staff. While under surveillance, she passed multiple plastic bags (including dog waste bags). No wonder she was so ill tempered! Plastic bags, along with other plastic pollution, often wash into the lagoon via stormwater and are accidentally ingested by many species of animals. On April 12, Humbug was released back to her marine habitat after a lot of personal attention aiding in her recovery. The Brevard Zoo and Indian River Sea Turtle Volunteers gave educational presentations to the community. Humbug was a fighter and an example of why it’s important to protect the Indian River Lagoon by recycling, removing litter, discarding dog waste, and reducing fertilizer and pesticide/ herbicide use. he Veterans Council of Indian River County is one of the most active veterans organizations in the state of Florida. Founded in 1987 as a 501(c)(3) to promote the celebrations of life for Memorial Day and Veterans Day, as well as transporting veterans to the Veterans Medical Center in West Palm Beach, the council has greatly expanded its scope. • Yes, we still do the events shown above and the audience keeps growing every year, but we’ve expanded into areas previously unexplored. The council now consists of 25 military specific organizations: American Legion, VFW, Vietnam Vets, etc. and more than 40 civilian organizations that support veterans. • Specifically, the council, through a program called Upward American Veterans, financially assists veterans who, for various reasons have come up short for obligations ranging from electric bills to college tuition. Using a very intensive screening process, the UAV has assisted 100+ veterans with allocations totaling more than $100,000. This program, which is a hand up not a hand out, owes its inception and success to Sandy Johnson, a wonderful benefactor whose initial contribution set the program in motion. • The Veterans Outreach program was originally designed to assist veterans returning after serving their country in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. The focus is on educating the veteran on the civilian prospective for job hunting, resume writing and interviewing. The program also educates employers on the many benefits of hiring a veteran. • Veterans In The Classroom was started by Barney Giordian of the Sebastian VFW primarily in northern Indian River County and has since expanded countywide by the Military Officers Association of America. The program focuses on teaching patriotism through middle school classes and has the full support of the Indian River County School District. • Recently through a Grand Harbor grant, the Veterans Council repaired 8 elderly veteran’s homes in the Gifford area, hiring unemployed young veterans to do the work. The Program Manager, Marine Corps Captain Doy Demsick is collocated with the county’s Veteran Service Officer Joel Hermann to make a one-stop trip for veterans seeking assistance. Members of various
councils perform duties honoring the passing of a veteran by the use of a Color Guard or Rifle Squad either at Memorial Island or at the gravesite. • Funding for the Veterans Council is provided through the generous contributions primarily from residents of Indian River County and we thank you for your support.

definite answer. However, there will never be a reason that totally relieves their emotional pain. Although there is much in life we cannot control, we have a choice, to move through adversity or to let it define or destroy us. Those who become stuck in their suffering end up becoming emotionally shut down, bitter and sick. The good news is that the human spirit is incredibly resilient. Albeit awe-inspiring, resilience isn’t extraordinary. Resilience is the process of adapting well and bouncing back from significant stress and can be developed in anyone. Studies have shown eight essential factors that influence emotional resilience: • Perseverance: trusting in the process of healing without giving up • Perspective: finding meaning in life’s challenges and learning from mistakes • Internal locus of control: taking charge to improve without being a victim to circumstance • Realistic optimism: seeing the positive in a situation while remaining realistic about possibilities • Spirituality: feeling a part of and having faith in something bigger than you • Self-esteem: having a positive view of self and confidence in strengths and abilities • Support: connecting with friends and family who offer non-judgmental emotionally safe space • Sense of humor: laughing calms the mind and relieves stress Hardship can be seen as a blessing when it opens a closed heart and mind. Through trials and tribulations we learn compassion, forgiveness, unconditional love and acceptance at a depth we may never have been able to reach otherwise. We are reminded what really matters in life and stop taking people or things for granted. We let go of grudges, practice kindness and say, “I love you” more. uesday afternoons are now the best day of the week for many St. Lucie County residents and visitors. Last September, in anticipation of the county’s decision to create a Sunshine Kitchen food processing facility available to cottage industries and small craft producers, the Treasure Coast Education Research Development Authority created a weekly Farm to Fork Fresh Market. Under the coordination of former farmer Dan Hafner, the weekly market is loaded with home-grown, fresh-baked, locally-produced vegetables, cakes and breads, food, honey, health and beauty products, plants and handcrafted items. It’s also loaded with local flavor, fun, and friendly people who enjoy the sunshine and the soft breeze wafting from the fully-stocked seven-acre lake steps away. In fact, when you stop to sample sugared nuts at one booth, you might be served by Mr. Lee from the vegetable booth next door because Mr. T, the ‘nutty guy,’ is off checking his latest cast, hoping for a lucky nibble. The Farm to Fork Fest Fresh Market is at the Treasure Coast Research Park at the corner of Kings Highway and Pruitt Research Road in Fort Pierce, one mile north of the Turnpike. Wandering and visiting is encouraged, and you can browse or shop to your heart’s content, all while listening to local musicians - or sometimes a few of the vendor— belting out your favorite songs. With more than seven housing communities in a less-than 10-mile radius, there are 130,000+ residents in the area, and every day, they’re hungry. While Fort Pierce has a spectacular Saturday morning Farmer’s Market and Jazz /Craft Market, it’s nice to be able to pick up all the ingredients for a fresh, healthy, and locally-grown meal—or perhaps the whole meal itself—on your way home from work or play on a Tuesday afternoon. INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING IN OUR BACKYARD

ot all films are made in La La Land. Last summer, a meditative science-fiction film was written, produced, and directed in Vero Beach. Vincent Anton Obriskie and Dominic Traverzo are two independent filmmakers who have made Vero Beach their cinematic canvas, much like Martin Scorsese did with New York and Richard Linklater did with Austin. As founder and CEO of VAO Media Productions, Vincent has produced and edited more than 100 film projects, from documentaries and commercials, to corporate identity pieces. Dominic, a South Florida native who now calls Vero Beach his home, has written and directed several films featured in many domestic and international film festivals. One of their recent collaborations, a dark comedy entitled, “Stunning,” was an official selection of the inaugural Vero Beach Wine and Film Festival in 2016. “Reggie,” their latest completed project, was filmed entirely on location in Vero Beach using local professional actors and resources. Larry Strauss and Larry Thompson star in the film alongside Jason Avery and Shelley Adelle, all veteran actors of the accomplished Vero Beach Theatre Guild. Vincent and Dominic’s original concept for “Reggie” was to make a science-fiction movie set in the American South, but with a more humanistic feel. Reggie, the main character, is forced to confront issues that he repressed long ago. A choice in his past has damned him to where he is now. Reggie is a simple story about a man, a brother, a family, a prisoner and the fact that you are never too old or too comfortable to make a change. “Reggie” was recently selected to screen at the 2017 Vero Beach Wine and Film Festival, June 8-11, in addition to other festivals nationwide. the filmmakers are in pre-production and securing funding for their next film slated to begin shooting in the area next year. A home to a vibrant arts scene, a new place for independent filmmaking, Vero Beach could soon be giving La La Land some serious competition. Life in the Heart of the
Cultural Arts Village
I
love living in my little 1920s cottage that I have lovingly restored over the past years. I’ve been a resident of the Edgewood Addition neighborhood since 1993. Located in the heart of the proposed Cultural Arts Village, it’s just west of the 14th Avenue Arts District. The cottage was a mess but I saw it had great bones, with the original wood floors, a great old fireplace, and a bathroom that was once a part of the wraparound porch. After the first rainstorm that ended up in my living room, a tin roof was immediately ordered! During the past 24 years, I’ve renovated the kitchen and one small bathroom, as well as added a deck with a tiki and a small pool off the master bedroom. There was an old pole barn in the backyard that eventually became a studio apartment when my kids kept coming home. There was absolutely no landscaping, only a yard of dirt. It was important to me to keep the native Florida landscaping feel. My vision for my home from the very beginning was a place of serenity and peace, to live with nature, friends, family and pets. I am so excited about what is happening in the downtown area, including my residential neighborhood. I hope to see the vision for the Arts Village to come alive and flourish with people who are quirky, colorful, imaginative, spirited and charming. A neighborhood in itself, a work of art! Spreading SoulShine
I
do what I do because everyone needs A Little SoulShine. There are a few reasons as to ‘how’ I got to this point. First, my family and I had a major lifestyle change a few years ago. I went from working a full-time job and living in a beautiful neighborhood in Vero Beach to resigning from my job and living in our camper, by choice. Yup! Four humans, two dogs, and a cat all living in a snug, little camper. It was amazing and life changing! During this time, we purchased land, worked day and night clearing the property, all while building a barn and a house. This is our dream come true. We’ve always been wannabe homesteaders. Along with these changes, I was able to focus on what I value most in life: family, nature, health and creativity. I ended up with a closet full of natural, handmade goods and didn’t know enough people to give them away to. A closet full of goodies shouldn’t be wasted or hoarded because that doesn’t do anyone any good. Plus, my husband thought I was going nuts. So, to prove him wrong, I set up a booth in my home. It wasn’t an actual booth that I was going to sell goods from. It was just something to look at and think, “Maybe one day I will actually get the courage to set up a booth in a public space.” My husband still thought I had lost my mind. I wasn’t ready to take that leap and put myself out there. Until…my 12-year-old daughter, Skyler, persistently encouraged me every step of the way. I had no choice but to show my family and myself that I could have a small business. With my daughter’s entrepreneurial ways, I naturally wanted her on my team. Skyler helps with the creating, managing, and also the critiquing of the goods. She is a huge asset to “A Little SoulShine.” Besides having a maker’s brain that doesn’t rest, I decided to start A Little SoulShine to bring colorful, happy, handmade goods to those who love letting their soul shine. It’s a great feeling knowing we can brighten someone’s day with something we made. With a name like ‘Summer,’ you’ve got to help spread sunshine! It’s just wrong if you don’t. Follow along on 52

Indian River Rocks!
P
erhaps you’ve stumbled across a brightly painted rock at a park and wondered about its origins. Nope, the Easter Bunny hasn’t run out of eggs to hide! Rock painting groups in Florida are believed to have started in Lakeland. With more than 25,000 members, counties in our area quickly took to the movement. My family fell in love with collecting and we would travel all the way to Martin County just to hunt rocks. I was so inspired that I decided to start a group in Vero Beach. It was originally called “Vero Beach Rocks.” Word quickly spread and our community excitedly joined the movement. After a popular vote among the followers, the group’s name changed to “Indian River Rocks.” With everything that is going on in our world, there is so much desire for peace. The rock craze has ignited creativity in all ages. Young and old

paint rocks and hide them throughout our community and also hunt rocks that others have painted. It’s always a delight to find a rock. Painting and hiding them is fun, too. As a local private investigator, the game of hide and seek interests me. I live for hints and clues leading to a prize. I own Roberts Investigative Services and I’m a criminal defense investigator in the private sector. I’m married with two children who absolutely love painting the rocks, in addition to finding and hiding them. One of my favorite discoveries was a beautiful hibiscus flower, found in Martin County. One time, my husband and I were driving in downtown Stuart and I saw a rock in a window sill. I made my husband run and get the rock while I was slowly driving with traffic! The mission of Indian River Rocks is simple: encourage others by painting on rocks. They uplift and encourage our community. Search “Indian River Rocks” on Facebook and join the group to learn about the rules and see found/hidden rocks from around the county. Happy collecting and painting!

YOGA HEALS
B
eautiful, perfect, happy: all words I would have chosen to describe life in my mid 40s. I was a proud wife and mother, successful businesswoman, happy volunteer. My life was idyllic. Then, suddenly, it wasn’t. I was getting divorced, two of my sisters passed away within five months of each other, and a string of unfortunate injuries to my foot left me struggling to walk. I was about as broken as a person could be. With a vague idea of a fresh start in mind, I packed up what mattered most, my pictures and my dog. A tiny little Amish village with a population of 752, an old wooden farmhouse nestled in seemingly endless fields of hay, accentuated by the rhythmic thunder of the horses hooves as they pulled their steel wheeled buggies by…it seemed like the perfect place to rethink my life: Baltic, OH. I spent three restorative years in Baltic. I found comfort in the quiet ways of the Amish, their kindness and humility is heartwarming. I found peace in the aroma of mud and mules during spring planting, fresh hay over summer and fall, a fresh fallen snow on winter’s empty fields. Still, Florida’s white beaches beckoned me.
Two falls on the ice complete with another injury to my foot convinced me it was time to go home. Being back in Florida I quickly realized that, though I had begun to find peace in my life, I had
no balance; literally or figuratively. I enrolled in a “Balance and Stability” class at Sebastian Yoga Studio. I went to that class and walked straight through the right door into the wrong practice, or so I thought. I had walked into a yoga class. I was asked to take my shoes off. I was terrified. Me, a United States Army Veteran afraid of a yoga class! I didn’t think I was “ready” for yoga. I’m an American soldier; to leave would have been to admit defeat. I took my shoes off, took that practice, then stayed for the next one. Something began to awaken in me during those two hours. I had found my teacher, Durgaya Palmieri. You see, Durgaya saw something in me I had forgotten that I possessed: passion. She also saw the teacher in me. It was Durgaya who first suggested I teach yoga. I quite literally laughed, but a seed had been planted. That seed continued to grow. Not only did I become a Trauma-conscious Yoga Teacher, through yoga I found this wonderful charitable organization, Connected Warriors, Inc., the world’s largest not-for-profit providing evidenced-based trauma-conscious yoga to veterans and their families all at no cost. Wow! Connected Warriors empowers me. Not only do I get to teach trauma-conscious yoga to my fellow veterans and their families, I have the opportunity to work on projects that have the potential to create real change, such as the Robert Sturman (Artist/Photgraphia) “Celebration Of Yoga,” the first project of it’s kind. The United States Military, specifically Fort Campbell Command, (and more recently, Camp Pendleton Command) welcomed us on base. Robert created this beautiful body of work illustrating our troops using yoga as a tool allowing them to be present in the moment. In peace and chaos, yoga heals. In February, CWI invited me to become their first National Ambassador. What an honor! In addition to working on wonderful projects, I now get the privilege of travelling to our VA centers and military facilities to help them set up new CWI classes. We bring yoga to veterans where it is needed. This is only accomplished through the kindness of our teachers who donate their time, our studios who donate their space, and through the generous contributions of our sponsors. How very inspiring. Beachside Rehab:
A Holistic Approach to Treatment
F
our years ago, Imelda Wellington walked into my real estate office on North Hutchinson Island and said, “I would like to take a look at your listing up the road.” I loved her accent right away—she told me she was from Ireland. Imelda is the CEO/Founder/Owner of Beachside Rehab. She purchased a lovely home and we got to know each other well. Imelda told me she was bringing recovery to this island. I was thrilled about it and explained to her that I got sober Aug. 15, 1990. I started volunteering with the groups at Beachside Rehab. A few years ago, I was visiting my son and daughter in Ohio. They have a half-brother who was 19 and was dying from heroin. Shanna (my daughter) asked, “Dad is there something you can do?” When I returned from my trip, I reached out to Imelda and asked, “Do you know of a place in Ohio we could send this young man?” I explained he has nothing to his name except an addiction. Imelda looked at me and said, “Can you get him here? I said, “Yes,” and she said, “Look, we’re talking about a soul, just get him here and we’ll take care of the rest.” He’s doing well today, three years later. Beachside Rehab has grown tremendously. Our clinical director, Tabitha Grant, is a Vero Beach native. She leads a wonderful team and program that treats the whole person mentally, physically and emotionally. Substance abuse is classified by the American Medical Association as a disease, and at Beachside Rehab, we treat the disease of addiction and mental health. The clinical offices occupy the old federal courthouse in Fort Pierce. However, the rehab residences are situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. Last May, Imelda asked me to join the team at Beachside Rehab. It was a natural and easy fit for me as I’ve been helping people get sober throughout the past 25 years. Now, real estate is my hobby. They hired me as director of community outreach and I love what I do: helping souls get better. What inspired Imelda to bring a world class treatment center to this area? She was the director of the arts at a large treatment center in Delray, the recovery capital of the U.S. at the time. She came up to visit North Hutchinson Island and thought, “Wouldn’t this be a tremendous place for people to get well? The peace and quiet would help them get back to nature and themselves. The ocean has a very calming effect.” She was right. We have a very high success rate. Beachside Rehab is a highly confidential and discreet world class treatment Center. A couple of points that differentiate us: • We don’t see addicts. We see souls suffering from addiction. • Our staff is hand selected by our founder, Imelda Wellington. We currently have 52 beds and 65 staff.
• Our staff will love each individual until they love themselves. • We feel getting them off drugs is the easy part. We are very concerned about long term care, keeping them off drugs. • We feel recovery encourages others recover. Beachside Rehab is a Joint Commission accredited private, family-owned drug, alcohol and trauma treatment center located on North Hutchinson Island. We take a holistic approach to treatment, while supporting the proven 12-step program. We utilize mind, body and spiritual elements such as massage, acupuncture, yoga, mindful meditation, CrossFit and Himalayan Singing Bowls to provide an enhanced recovery program for each individual. We also offer SMART RECOVERY, individualized church participation, labyrinth walks and experiential activities like beach walks, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, fishing, and nature hikes. All of our residences are located on North Hutchinson Island, one of the most serene destinations in the state of Florida. North Hutchinson Island consists of 3,000 acres, 2,000 of which are state parks and preserves. We encourage the water sports like boating, paddle boarding, kayaking, horseback riding on the beach, swimming, walking on the beach or sunbathing by the pool. We find this type of “therapy” is very healing and a necessary component of traditional therapy. Our individuals find this very therapeutic as well. We have hand selected a variety of different therapists on our clinical team to treat the unique needs of our clients. Besides English, we have therapists who speak Spanish, Dutch, German and Russian. This is especially important during family therapy sessions for our clients and families whose first language is not English. Our therapists are also licensed and certified in a variety of disciplines including marriage and family, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Work, Certified EMDR Therapist, Masters-Level CAP, International Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and Trained Therapist. Another aspect of Beachside Rehab is the nonprofit organization, GRACE Recovery Foundation. GRACE stands for Give Recovery A Chance Everyday. On Nov. 12, 2016, GRACE rescued 30 souls that didn’t have the means to pay for world class treatment. Today, 19 out of the 30 are doing well. Sweet, Simple Moments It might sound boring, but it’s the boring stuff I will miss the most.
W
ho knew that a Pixar movie would be so profound and change my view on how I photograph families. In the movie, “UP,” a little boy named Russell describes his favorite game that he used to play with his dad. It was a simple game, but had a lasting impact on him. A new style of family photography has recently emerged. This documentary approach usually takes place in the home and can last from a few hours to a full day. Your home is a place that is filled with memories made daily. While the moments may seem small, like brushing your child’s hair or baking brownies, it’s a reflection of how much you care for each other. I often think of how amazing it would be to see pictures of my parents enjoying their everyday life, doing every day, normal activities. I would love to see what it was like in that moment in time when my mom was a toddler running around. I have such gratitude that I will be able to give my daughter this gift. Photographs showing us playing our “stomp” game that we do every time we get into the car; the messy moments of her planting seeds in the garden with dad. The moment is her legacy capsulated into a photograph. Documentary sessions provide you with a sense of freedom. There is no coordinating of outfits or rushing out the house to meet at a pretty park just before sunset. By being in the comfort of your own home, you can wear what you want and let the kids be who they want to be. The Unpredictability is all a part of the fun. At any moment, a dance party could break out, or an epic light saber battle. Even the sweet simple moments of a baby reaching out to tell mommy, “Please hold me,” is what life is all about. 62

Most recently, I was invited to document the Tripson’s weekly family dinner. While in the kitchen, Hilde Tripson said to me, “Sam passed on a Tuesday, so we have come together every Tuesday for the past 18 months. On the crazy days, we may not eat until 9 p.m., but we do this every week.” The images captured that evening were more than “just dinner,” it was about capturing Sam Tripson’s legacy. Although his physical body is no longer present, that house and the people in it are a reflection of him. I could see it that day, and as the kids grow up, they will see it, too. No matter your story, your life is beautiful. When it’s time for your annual family photo shoot, give yourself permission to step out from the “normal,” because in 10, 15 or 20 years, it’s the boring stuff you will miss the most. Capturing Moments and
Milestones K
im Bottalico, creator of Kinosi Photography, is originally from Texas but grew up in sunny Vero Beach. Her first foray into photography was her junior year of high school in film class. The magic of taking a negative from the camera and turning it into a print is what piqued her initial interest in photography. Over time, she took many photography classes at Florida State University as well as in New York City and Vero Beach. With a full-time job in marketing and public relations in NYC, photography was simply for fun. A creative void was maintained via her blog named Kinosi, a word created by the combination of the first two letters of Kim’s full name. Photography transformed from a hobby to a job when a friend asked Kim to secretly capture his proposal to his girlfriend. This led to photographing the bride’s Mehndi ceremony and other wedding events for the couple. “I knew the moment I began focusing on capturing people and their reactions, stories and interactions, I was hooked,” Kim says. “It’s a challenge in so many ways, but so rewarding to physically be in the moment utilizing the tool of the camera in your hand.” Word spread and Kim took various jobs including styled shoots, engagement sessions, and eventually a wedding. This took place the day before she moved from the city back to Vero Beach. With a dream in mind, Kim decided to dedicate 100 percent to photography and grew her portfolio by capturing families, kids, newborns, engaged couples, and eventually weddings. Fast forward to 2017 and Kinosi Photography is in its fourth year of business. The approach to Kim’s shooting can best be described as one of authenticity. Utilizing natural light, with an organic and free flowing approach to photography, Kim strives to create images that capture moments in an honest and realistic way. “With every wedding, I endeavor to develop a personal connection with the bride and groom to establish a level of comfort on what should be a joyous day,” Kim explains. “I find it important to be a calming presence for the couple and my goal is to artistically document not only the big moments of a wedding day, but the “in-betweens” as well, all while having fun!” Learn more at Kinosi.com. 64

nowing that sometimes a canine friend can offer some of the best medicine for the psyche, Scully-Welsh Cancer Center implemented the pet therapy program last year. Patients undergoing cancer treatment often experience anxiety, so a visit with a furry friend can provide a warm and loving distraction. After a visit from one of the therapy dogs, patients visibly show improved mood and energy levels, and sometimes schedule their appointments to coincide with the dogs visiting. Their companionship helps pass the time while receiving treatment. The extent of the visit might be limited to a wave from a hospital bed to a dog outside the room. Other patients might request longer visits, asking for the dog to sit in their lap and stay a while. Spending time with nurturing canines can provide much needed peace and comfort. The dogs are particularly welcomed by patients who are not able to have a pet at home and the program provides them with a calming interaction with a four-legged friend. R. Scott Duncan, volunteer coordinator of the John W. Scully Volunteer Program, organizes the pet therapy and there are now 12 handler-canine teams that volunteer their time. “The pet therapy program has been met with enormous enthusiasm. Patients and their caregivers are comforted by animalassisted therapy and studies show that it lowers blood pressure, improves cardiovascular health and produces an automatic relaxation response. Most importantly, the dogs offer comfort and compassion while brightening everyone’s day, including the staff and physicians!” To become certified through Pet Partners, Alliance of Therapy Dogs, or Dog Therapy International, all of the Scully-Welsh pet therapy dogs must complete different tests flawlessly which involves the highest level of training in obedience and temperament. In addition to the certification for the animals, the owners must complete the volunteer program at the hospital. Once the therapy dogs and their handlers have passed a thorough screening process, they volunteer at the center for one hour every week. Being cute, warm, fuzzy and smart comes with the territory, but the real healing comes from that one special ingredient: unconditional love! ifi is the perfect specimen of her breed. Everyone salutes you with, “Wow, what a beautiful dog!” Yes, your dog is special. But is she a dog you should breed? To ascertain if your dog is in the right condition to be bred, she should be examined to consider the following: Does she have a healthy heart? Are her breasts normal and able to provide plenty of milk for her nursing young? Is her hemoglobin count within range to guard against anemia? A complete blood count will identify low-grade infections and a fecal exam can rule out any intestinal worms that can pass from mother to offspring. A heart worm test is also important as heart worm can cause a weak heart, liver, kidney damage and anemia, all adding stress to the mother and her pups. Examination and vaccinations need to be administered at least two to three weeks prior to breeding as modified live vaccines may cause possible malformations to the pups during pregnancy. Once you’ve taken these steps, vitamins and mineral supplements are essential for the entire nine-week gestation period. The last three weeks are critically important, as this is when calcium is being deposited into the bones of her babies. Supplements and increased quantities of food need to continue into the nursing period to help provide adequate milk and nutrition. At four weeks, an ultrasound should be taken to check on the growth of the pups. Any delivery concerns should be discussed ahead of time, as should care of the newborns post delivery. A full printout of potential problems concerning the delivery, as well as care of mother and pups after delivery is available at our office. With the proper care, Fifi and her pups can expect healthy and happy lives, and your friends and neighbors can salute the entire brood with compliments and awe. DALE WIMBROW PARK 11805 Roseland Road Roseland, FL Dale Wimbrow Park features a large playground, picnic pavilions, restrooms, boat launch, fitness trail, paved parking, fishing access and BBQ grills. GIFFORD AQUATIC CENTER 4895 43rd Avenue Vero Beach, FL (772) 770-5312 The Gifford Aquatic Center is a family-friendly facility that features a 180,000 gallon, zero entry pool and spray deck that holds up to 93 guests. The pool is equipped with two winding water slides and seven lanes for lap swimming. Swimming lessons for all ages are offered, along with aqua aerobics and the center also hosts two swim teams. The facility may also be rented for special events. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Sunday during the school year and seven days a week in the summer. GOLDEN SANDS BEACH PARK 10350 N. You will find 18 lanes at 25 yards for lap swimming, diving well with both 1 meter and 3 meter diving boards, a competition pool with almost 1 million gallons of water, an activity pool with almost 185,000 gallons of water, a zero depth entry point to accommodate all ages, slides, water cannons, bubbles, and a huge water play structure. Pool is open 7 days. Minimal fees apply. POCAHONTAS PARK 21st Street Vero Beach, FL Pocahontas Park has a great playground and many activities for children under 12 and includes tennis and shuffleboard courts. Park is open seven days a week and is free to the public. RIVERSIDE PARK & TENNIS COURTS 350 Dahlia Lane Vero Beach, FL Located on the barrier island, this park features tennis, racquetball, rentals, fitness trail, walking trail, and boat ramp. Pavilions available for picnics and include running water and BBQ Grills. This popular family area is nestled among beautiful oaks which provide plenty of shade. You will also be within a short walk to Memorial Island, a beautiful park respectfully dedicated to all branches of the military. ROUND ISLAND OCEANSIDE PARK 2201 Hwy A1A Vero Beach, FL The park is open from 7am to sunset, lifeguards on duty from 9-5. Round Island Park features restrooms, paved parking, covered pavilions, easy beach access, and children’s playground. Canoe launch and observation tower are nearby.
SEBASTIAN INLET STATE PARK 9700 South State Road A1A Melbourne Beach, FL The premier salt water fishing spot on Florida’s east coast, this park is a favorite for anglers nationwide for catching snook, red fish, blue fish, and Spanish mackerel from its jettys. Surfing is also a popular recreation and several major competitions are held here every year. There are two museums within the park. The McLarty Museum features the history of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet, and the Sebastian Fishing Museum tells the history of the areas fishing industry. Three miles of beautiful beaches provide swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, shelling, and sunbathing. Canoeing and kayaking in the Indian River Lagoon are also favorite pastimes. You will find the mile long hammock train, waterfront pavilions and picnic areas full-facility campsites and a boat ramp. SOUTH BEACH PARK Ocean Drive and East Causeway Vero Beach, FL Located over the 17th Street Bridge, past A1A, South Beach Park provides an ocean beach, lifeguard, boardwalk, dress and shower facilities, playground, picnic area, and dune crossover for catamarans. This is a popular beach due to its amenities, as well as easy access for both mainland and the barrier island. TRACKING STATION BEACHFRONT PARK 800 46th Place Vero Beach, FL The Tracking Station Beachfront Park features restrooms, showers, paved parking, boardwalk, beach access, playground, BBQ grills, picnic tables, pavilions, and lifeguards. TREASURE SHORES BEACH PARK 11300 Highway A1A Vero Beach, FL This park is designated as the ADA Access Park for Indian River County. BEACH SAFETY BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe. TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station.

The start of 2017 has been bumpy to say the least. Finally, during the months of May and June we should feel a little calmer. Keep your focus on what matters each day and try not to project too much into the future. The best times for everyone to set intentions are during the new moons of May 25 and June 23. The full moons of May 10 and June 9 bring out more of our collective emotions; so don’t be surprised if things are more heightened during these periods. ARIES: Looks like you have the pedal to the metal during the
first three weeks of May. You may find yourself running on empty by the time you get to May 19, so be careful regarding your excessive tendencies. Around May 9, you’ll be feeling very impulsive.
