Some Day is TODAY As we begin a brand-new year, it’s exciting to envision what these next twelve months will bring. Imagine life as a beautiful unwrapped gift, each day you take out one little present and it fills your heart with so much joy and happiness. If we take this time now as we begin anew and really sit with ourselves in a quiet space, ask yourself this question: if money was no object, what brings you joy? What would you do right now if you could?

I’ve asked this question a lot and you’d be surprised at how many people can’t name 5 things. No matter what your bank account balance is, you can’t buy time. It’s that one commodity that is truly priceless.

Think about that… now, what do you want to do today? The opportunities are endless!

We live in such a beautiful community most of us don’t realize how lucky we are. If you love the ocean, you’re in luck! Fishing, yep that too.

Horses, farming, walking in the woods, birding, golfing, tennis, um… is there anything we don’t have? Oh yeah! Cold weather, sorry Florida doesn’t really offer that… you’d better plan a trip north.

Otherwise, just waking up and deciding what to do today just might be your biggest challenge because the opportunities are endless.

Let’s all try to be more present in our day-today life. Make a conscious effort to be respectful of our environment and how we take care of it.

Pick up that piece of garbage because it’s ugly and harmful. Just be kind, courteous, and a better human being than we were yesterday. Don’t forget to embrace your inner child and go have some crazy fun. Laugh… a lot. It’s so good for the soul!

And remember… just being alive right now is the biggest gift we could ever wish for. Stop saying some day and go do “it” today.

Protecting the Beauty Under the Surface I grew up in the ocean. If I wasn’t under it, either free diving or scuba diving, I was on top of it, surfing, fishing, or boating. Getting lost in the uninhabited southern chain of the Bahamas, I experienced firsthand the magic of what lies beneath the waves from very early on in life. I met the fragility of the sea and heard the respect that Mother Ocean demanded. I grew up amongst ocean lovers and explorers, and I was taught from the beginning that I had to respect the ocean and her raw power. I knew that I was in her control the second I dipped under the surface.

As a contemporary and abstract underwater photographer attempting to capture this raw power, I tend to see ocean life through a distorted lens. I use a Canon 5 DSR, in a Nauticam housing with an assortment of lenses and strobes that allow me to achieve the hues and saturation to reach exactly what I need in creating my abstract art. My goal is to see something and capture it in a way that bends the mind’s eye when viewing one of my large-scale pieces. I often photograph the small intricate delicacies of corals and sea fans, enlarging it so it is quite impactful for the wall. I love taking observers of my art on a visual dive through the magic fantasy world of the underwater ocean. To me, the underwater world is my photo set. It’s uncontrolled and without boundaries. There is no time to stop to reshoot and no time to reorganize yourself.

When I am blessed enough to witness an opportunity which very few people have been able to see, I really have to be on my game, always ready for anything and ready to start shooting. Setting up my “scene” on a minute-by-minute basis calls for sharp creativity and a willingness to change the vibe and style in an instant. Capturing the beauties of the underwater life and sharing it with the world is where I find the most pleasure.

Most of the time, I spend my days floating through the Coral Sea, Indonesia, as well as Papua, New Guinea. My first dive in the Coral Triangle was in Papua about 11 years ago. It felt so surreal. It was like stepping into another world. A beautiful underwater world filled with an abundance of life and vibrant color. Encounters with bigger fish in what seemed like a much larger ocean. I find myself exploring destinations where life becomes raw and uncharted. Those destinations allow for my greatest creativity to run amuck and wild. Being born into a family of travelers and explorers, staying local would just be too weird and unnatural. When I swim through these far away oceans with my blinders off, I welcome all that the ocean blesses me with. Everything special happens to find its way in front of my camera lens, in between the underwater destinations that I am swimming to and from. The tiny little living creatures and corals hold a big impact to my viewers.

My latest work is my new book, The Coral Triangle, a collection of 110 images of my best underwater images taken in one of the world’s oldest reef systems in the waters off of Papua, New Guinea. This biodiverse underwater wonderland supports 30 percent of all the world’s coral.

I am keenly aware of how precious and fragile life is in the ocean.

Seeing firsthand, through my travels I see the effects of how the human race has dropped the ball on taking proper care of Mother Ocean.

Capturing the beauty within the deep blue sea is just one way I can help to promote a clean and healthy sea. We all need to be better stewards of our environment. Getting people to fall in love with the ocean, hopefully, means they will care for her, nurture her, and protect her. We need to understand the importance of a strong and clean ocean and how we need to respect and protect her. Throughout my lifetime, I have learned that life should never be taken for granted… by land or by sea.

Recently, I travelled to Papua, New Guinea for the 4th time in my life and was still amazed by the quality of life under the waves.

There is so much color and creatures of all sizes, that it still boggles my creative mind every time I visit there. Again, I lived aboard a floating vessel for my adventure. Because Papua is so remote, the number of human interactions is slim. It took me three days to get there with a lot of trouble in between catching and missing puddle hopper flights between islands. We were exploring Kimbe Bay and the Witu Islands by boat for a month. I was diving six times a day and doing some fishing for fresh dinners and lunches in between. It was hard going sometimes because of El Niño, which brings warmer water and decreases water visibility, so we had to hunt for clean, clear water to make the best dives possible during our short time in Papua. When we did get clear ocean to swim in, it was otherworldly.

The diversity is insane! There were schools upon schools of jacks and snapper, so thick you could lose sight of your fellow diver, and would even block out the sun from the surface.

We would be frequently visited by sharks and dolphins. The sea was never silent a minute because of the constant whistling, clicking, and “talking” of the pods of dolphins, so close yet so far away… always weary of humans; therefore, keeping their distance off into the deep blue.

There were schools of batfish which is the cover photo in this issue. The corals were what you would find in an aquarium.

Pristine and filled with so much color and life. I am an abstract kind of guy so I could literally spend the entire dive hovering above massive plate corals and table corals trying to compose the perfect framed shot with all four corners perfectly filled with interesting information for the eye. It is a really cool experience to be able to get so lost in shapes of definition that you literally forget about everything and anything going on topside. There are endless sea fans hosting every shade of red, orange, and yellow. Here, the underwater world is teaming with micro-life and damsel fish. Red whip corals with golden damsels are everywhere. The soft coral is so beautiful that you forget to breath and it will make your regulator fall out of your mouth. I guess that’s the equivalent of making your jaw hit the floor as a diver—ha!

We spent some time exploring on land as well. Getting immersed in the local traditions and culture is a must for me on my travels. I need to feel the vibe and see locals in their day-to-day lives to really understand how life works over there. It’s a slow and mellow existence. Living 100% off the land and sea. There are no modern-day technologies. Just presence of mind, body, love, and gratitude. They are always so happy to see you, always smiling from ear to ear. No arms outstretched looking for handouts, just hugs.

I was diving and experiencing life and their culture on my own through Papua as I always do. I prefer traveling solo because it gives me the availability to tune in to what is happening around me. It gives me the quiet and clarity I need to focus on how people with so much less than me are that much happier. Unlike us, they are never always plugged into some kind of mobile device or technological thingamabob. Their peaceful naivety makes appealing sense to me. How many beautiful experiences, smiles, and soul food opportunities do we miss because we are lured by our screens? How many times have we zoned out when zoning in would be so extremely beneficial to us? “A lot and always” is the answer to those questions.

So, here I was floating my way through the waters around Papua when I was told about a tree that explodes on chorus with millions of lights when all is quiet in the dead of night. Of course, once I hear of this and night is looming, I try and organize a ride to this mysterious lightning tree. I was told, the later in the darkness, the better. I fumble with my words and hand gestures to a kind local man and convince him to take me to this mysterious phenomenon. We pack up the truck with my cameras, lenses, flashlights and rain gear, and set off into the dark rainforest of Papua. Here we were, putting one foot in front of the other as we stumble into the ink black jungle. We get to a small hill, about 20 feet tall at its tippy top. Up at the hill’s crest, I can just make out a silhouette of a big round tree in the darkness. There it was, in all its black-on-black glory. It was about the size of a big Florida orange tree, or a nice healthy mango tree. It was about 30 feet across and stood a good 50 feet high from root to tip. It was close to midnight and only myself and my local friend were in the area.

As we sat, staring at this black fruit tree, one by one, random and in no order at all, fireflies began to light up the tree. 1, 2, 10, 40, 50 and in no particular order whatsoever. I sat there a little disappointed but grateful for the experience. Then, like a switch was flipped and the conductor began to wave his baton, all the lights began to fall in synch with each other.

First, 100, 200, 1000, and then 5000+ fireflies began to hit their headlights at the same time! The tree was beating in the night like a neon tree-shaped heart! It seemed like a million tiny choreographed bugs kept growing in brightness and quantity, all turning their lights on in unison! The tree began to breathe in and out a fluorescent green light, that eventually made the entire tree visible. It was pure magic. Nature’s fine art showing its true colors. The tree was alive and showing off to us in the pitch-black jungle in the Highlands of Papua. I began to think how amazing it was for nature to have a rhyme and reason like this. It was showing me that when you come together as a collective unit you can achieve great beauty. It was extremely powerful to witness this execution by such tiny winged insects that it was making me feel extremely small. Standing there, completely amazed to be a part of such a spectacle. Nature is a mad scientist and that night in the jungle made me realize that when we operate alone, unorganized, and random, we don’t accomplish much. We light up here and light up a little there, but there is a bigger picture that can’t be reached by operating as one. Once we start to hit the high notes together as one, the possibilities are endless. We begin to act as one big persuasive movement with a cause. We begin to act like one morphing creature going after the greater good. It was a message that I believe came from my God in order to show me that I need to have faith. Faith in him that when we hold hands tightly and together, we will see the light.

The abyss is a dark black-blue when you look down into the eyes of the depths as you are floating in the ocean with no sea floor. It’s an amazingly haunting and thought-provoking feeling. You begin to think about who or what is down there on the bottom in their final resting place. Why and how did this thing get there? What was its thoughts as they drifted ever so freely down… down… down? What massive ocean creature has its eyes on you as you unknowingly swim in search of the “perfect shot?” I have photographs of everything from old WW2 carnage to gargantuan humpback whales and the feeling is always the same, who is looking at me? Because I feel the sense of being watched. The open ocean is an unforgiving place. A place when treated right, can offer you the most soul shaking and nourishing experience or when treated with hesitation and disregard, your life can be taken in a blink of an eye. It is power that you feel when swimming in the sea, and it’s not your power. It’s a power of what is all around you, hugging you like a warm, blue blanket. The abyss.

The Art of Brotherly Love Did you ever get a phone call and not return it? I am sure most of us have. What if it turns out that call could have changed your life or sent it in a different direction? Jimmy Stovall is that man, the proverbial 27th Highwaymen, who didn’t make it in the book with the other 26. Jimmy’s trip down the road with the Highwaymen started in the 1960s in Fort Pierce when he was a teenager and dating Peggy Smith, Alfred Hair’s young sister-in-law. Alfred commented to Jimmy that he was there at his home when he left in the morning, and when he returned in the evening. In fact, Stovall was in his home more than Alfred was, and if he was going to continue this, he would have to start working for him. Stovall was able to do it as part of his high school study program and began to learn to use

power tools and make frames for the Highwaymen paintings that were being sold up and down the coast of Florida. He went on sales calls with Highwaymen, Al Black, and started to learn how to paint vivid, technicolor landscapes. It was a lucrative business and Jimmy remembers being amazed at how much people would pay for art.

Jimmy’s identical twin, Johnny, was introduced to the group, but he did his duty and enlisted in the Army during Vietnam. Jimmy continued to learn the trade till the unthinkable happened in the summer of 1970: Alfred Hair was murdered. The artist’s group drifted apart… Johnny finished his tour of duty and returned to Fort Pierce. Their mother counseled the brothers to go to a trade school in Tampa. Upon graduation, Johnny and Jimmy started with Southern Bell. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck Homestead and the Stovall’s were there helping repair the devastation. During this time Highwaymen, Mary Ann Carroll, called Jimmy and told him that a man was interviewing the artists for a book he was writing, but Jimmy was busy in Homestead and never returned the call. That fellow was Gary Monroe, and the book became the “bible” for collectors, as well as a best seller. The lucky 26 artists included in the book started painting again, attending Highwaymen events and being asked to autograph copies of the book.

You just never know how one phone call can change things, right?

Hometown Local and Iconic When John Jetson and his brother, Scott, opened their Fort Pierce location in 1974, the brothers knew they wanted a store that would grow with the community. Fifty years later, Jetsons sells appliances, electronics, and mattresses at its now 7 locations, with number 8 being built on Gatlin Blvd. in Port St. Lucie. Family owned and locally operated, the chain of stores still follows the philosophy of its iconic founder: “Be good to the community and the community will be good to you. It’s a partnership.”

Community involvement, local events, the support of our Veterans, first responders, and the many organizations that care for the health and well-being of all Treasure Coast residents are all part of the company that Jetson President, Trey Thofner, inherited upon the death of his father in 2020. That’s why people bypass the big box stores and shop locally. They know that many of the Jetson employees have worked there for over 10 years and care… and that the deals at Jetson are the best. Warehouse space has doubled with the construction of Jetson’s new Fort Pierce facilities. It all adds up to better savings for the customer. Service and repair are done six days a week by Jetson technicians who are trained and certified by the manufacturers. Jetson trucks and vans are always visible on the Treasure Coast.

One of the traditions that continues is the annual Jetson Highwaymen event. In its 13th year, it’s always held on the last Saturday in January from 11am to 3pm. It features the surviving Florida Highwaymen artists. It all started with twenty-six African American artists from Fort Pierce and Vero Beach who began painting enchanting, vibrant landscapes of a disappearing Florida in the Come experience the Jetson early 1960s. The surviving Highwaymen and other Florida artists can be difference at our flagship Fort Pierce seen at the event painting and selling their art. It’s a wonderful time to store and headquarters located at meet the artists and hear about their work.

In the first book, “Bear Town,” Backman transports you to a small, wintery town where the townspeople love their neighbors, their kids, and their youth hockey team. If you are thinking, “Oh, darn, I’m not into hockey,” don’t worry—that’s what I thought also. This book is about so much more than hockey. So. Much. More. The story follows the journey of this team in a down-and-out town as it heads into the national semi-finals with the hopes and dreams of every person in town pinned squarely on their backs. The pressure and tension multiply drastically when one of the players commits a violent act that leaves the coach’s daughter deeply traumatized and the coach facing impossible choices. The consequences of this event and events that follow touch every person in the community, blanketing the town in heartbreak, conflict, and anger. This book is an emotional roller coaster and will leave you picking up the second book before you even turn the last page.

The second book in this series is “Us Against You,” and as the title suggests, explores the division caused by the events of the first book. This division threatens to destroy the hockey team (and the townspeople’s dreams) permanently. New conflicts arise and additional tragedies occur that seem impossible to overcome. The formerly celebrated hockey team is failing financially, players have left to play for a rival town’s team, and everyone seems to be angry, resentful, or just sad; that is, until a newcomer is hired to lead the team. As the new coach struggles to rebuild the team, Backman reveals more about the former players and the townspeople that leave will leave you re-evaluating your former opinions – both good and bad. With this book, Backman continues to lead his readers through an emotional roller coaster and leaves you no choice but to find out what happens next.

The final book is perfectly titled “The Winners.” But who, exactly has won? Backman leaves his readers pondering that question long after the last words are read. From the devastating storm at the beginning of the book, to a key character’s death at the end, we are left pondering good vs. bad and which is which. Heroes return, victims become wrongdoers, and vice versa. Hate becomes compassion.

Love becomes deception, and so on. The townspeople continue to recover from the devastating events of the past and sometimes seem to take two steps backward for every step forward. This 34

is a book about healing and redemption, and how unlikely heroes may surprise us. I will warn you; this last book is long. You may want to take a break between the second and third book—or just dive on in. Either way, you don’t want to miss this brilliantly penned story about humanity, survival, community, betrayal, redemption, forgiveness, debilitating pain, and incredible joy—and living through all of it.

The entire Bear Town series is about people who live in “Anywheretown.” The characters are people you already know. They are your neighbors, your kids, even YOU. Their problems are your problems.

Their relationships are ones you have, ones you wish you had, and ones you pray you will never have.

Homeschooling: Adventures and Tea “WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE AN ADVENTURE NOW OR YOUR TEA FIRST?” ~ PETER PAN Peter Pan has never asked me to join him for either but my little ones ask me to play with them every day throughout the day. It’s perhaps at these moments that I love homeschooling the most. We are free to put down our pen and paper and head outside for an adventure while singing math songs, cuddling on the sofa while reading stories, painting pictures under a blue sky… or maybe just skip the lesson and have an outing.

It may appear that we are living in Never Never Land and shirking responsibilities, but this sort of restful learning is meaningful and surprisingly productive. I never want to grow up so much that I miss the merriment with my little ones. Always take time for an adventure, tea, or both!

Time and time again I hear mothers say to me: “Enjoy this season; it goes by quickly.” Remember, though that time-ticking-crocodile is lurking, there is always an occasion for adventures and tea!

• Take breaks throughout the day for intentional play.

• Enjoy one-on-one time to listen and talk with each child, even for five minutes.

• Read at least one lovely story every day.

• Cultivate gratitude throughout the day. It's the key to living joyful and childlike, and keeps the atmosphere in your home free of that cranky pirate!

• Drink tea EVERY day! Local Tea and Chi offers lovely teas children enjoy.

However, it is also one of the most challenging and demanding professions, requiring hard work, dedication, and a deep understanding of the land and the environment. Despite the hardships, farming is an essential part of our lives, providing us with the food we need to survive and thrive.

While farming may often be romanticized as a peaceful and idyllic way of life; true however, the reality is far from that. In truth, farming is an incredibly hard and challenging profession that requires immense physical and mental strength.

One of the biggest challenges is the physical labor involved and the unpredictability of weather. Farmers have to work long hours in all types of weather and are often required to wake up before sunrise and work well into the night. We have to tend to our crops, which means lifting heavy equipment, working with our hands, and being on our feet for most of the day (we LOVE what we do). The physical strain can be exhausting, and many farmers suffer from physical ailments as a result. Just ask a local farmer for some proof. Imagine playing a sport with no back-ups to allow you to rest. Even Michael Jordan needed a quick break to perform his best.

Apart from the physical demands, farming also requires a lot of mental and emotional strength. Farmers have to deal with unpredictable weather patterns, crop diseases, and pests that can destroy our livelihoods in a matter of days. We also have to constantly adapt to changing market conditions and regulations, which can be stressful and time-consuming. Furthermore, farming is often a solitary profession. As farmers we often work alone or with just a small team, which means we have to be self-sufficient and self-reliant, which can be mentally and emotionally draining. Your support is beyond helpful for our motivation. Despite these challenges, farming has many benefits. For one, it provides us with the food we need to survive. Without farmers, we would not have access to nutrient dense foods that are essential to our diet.

Like to gamble? Farming is a financially risky profession. Farmers have to invest a lot of money in equipment, seeds, and livestock, with no guarantee of a return on our investment. We have to deal with fluctuations in market prices, which can have a significant impact on our bottom line. Despite the challenges, however, we continue to work hard to provide the food and resources that we all depend on. It's important that we recognize and appreciate the difficult work that farmers do, and support our local farmers in any way possible.

Farming plays a critical role in the health of our planet. It helps to preserve our natural resources, such as soil, water, and air, by promoting sustainable practices that protect the environment. Our farming practices at Osceola Organic Family Farm, such as crop rotation, intercropping, and the use of cover crops can help to improve soil fertility and reduce pests and diseases. Local farming is especially important to the entire planet.

A Very Unlikely Story: Dream It and Do It “LEAVE NO TRACE, AND WE CAN SAVE THIS PLACE!” ~ MARK FISHER In the heart of midwestern farm country nestled between rolling hills and whispering cornfields, you will find Mark Fisher, Sam Gilk and Danny Gilk, dreamers with calloused hands and an insatiable passion for the water. Born to families of fishermen, Mark and his crew spent their childhood exploring the lakeshores and riverbanks, daydreaming of one day building a hyper skiff skimming across the water's surface in a vessel that defied limits.

While most dismissed Mark's dreams as fanciful musings of a small-town kid, his determination only grew. He immersed himself in every book and article about boat design, spending hours sketching his ideas in a tattered notebook. As Mark matured, so did his ambition. With the precision of a craftsman and the tenacity of a visionary, he embarked on a journey with his partners to build a hyper skiff unlike any other— a marvel of luxury, performance, and environmental consciousness.

In a modest workshop adorned with tools, carbon fiber and resins, Mark toiled tirelessly, piecing together their creation. Countless nights were spent refining designs, integrating cutting-edge technology, and infusing the skiff with eco-friendly innovations. Word of Mark's endeavor spread like ripples in a pond. Skeptics scoffed at the idea of a small-town lad crafting a vessel of such grandeur. Yet, Mark and his team remained undeterred, pouring their heart and soul into every inch of their hyper skiff.

Months turned into years, and rumors whispered across the waters about a mythical vessel taking shape in the secluded town. Those who caught glimpses of the skiff under construction marveled at its sleek lines and futuristic features, shrouded in secrecy within the workshop's walls. Finally, the day arrived when the hyper skiff emerged from the confines of the workshop, gleaming under the sun's rays. The maiden voyage was a spectacle to behold. The hyper skiff danced across the water's surface with effortless grace, defying physics with its speed and agility. Spectators gasped as it maneuvered through twists and turns, leaving no trace of prop scars in its wake—a feat unprecedented in the world of shallow water skiffs.

But it wasn't just its performance that captured attention; it was the ethos behind it. Mark had achieved the unthinkable—a luxurious vessel that embraced sustainability, leaving the environment untouched by its passage.

Demand for the hyper skiff went global. The elite sought ownership, willing to pay a premium for a craft that combined opulence with conscientious engineering. Yet, Mark and his team remained steadfast in their approach, ensuring that each skiff was crafted with the same dedication and attention to detail. The natural diversity of Florida’s Treasure Coast is a captivating blend of various ecosystems, showcasing a remarkable array of landscapes and wildlife. Our region is home to the Indian River Lagoon, one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America. The 156-mile-long estuary is composed of three main bodies of water: the Banana River, the Indian River, and the Mosquito Lagoon. The lagoon acts as the ocean’s cradle, functioning as a vital spawning and nursery area for numerous fish species such as the trout, tarpon, redfish, and snook. Identifying the “Snake Bird” ANHINGA VERSUS DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT

What is that ‘snake like’ bird you see in the water? It looked similar to a bird you saw diving over and swimming underwater. Wait a minute, did it dive over like a duck or did it submerge itself like it was a periscope?

The two birds definitely looked similar and are seen at the water’s edge with their out-spread wings frequently sunning. Both are primarily black in color; one has whitish tones and the other has a brown upper region.

What are these birds? It can be a challenge to decipher between an Anhinga and a Double-crested Cormorant.

Here’s a few tips to help you distinguish these birds. If it has a sharp pointed bill, then you have observed an Anhinga. This bird is also known to forage alone. If you observe a bird that has a downward hook on its upper bill, like a raptor, you have found yourself a Double-crested Cormorant, especially when you see it in small to larger flocks. Both species perch themselves at the water’s edge or wings outstretched on a tree. This is not a defensive posture, just their way of letting nature dry their wings. Each of these birds have reduced oil on their feathers, and as they forage on fish underwater, it can become quite saturated. They usually perch close to where they hunt and usually shake off excess water before outstretching to dry their wings.

Here’s a few more defining characteristics to help you distinguish between these two birds. The Anhinga spears its prey and is most commonly found in freshwater habitats; you could find them in brackish or salt-water bodies of water, too. The Double-crested Cormorant clamps down on its prey and will forage in all salinities of water. The Anhinga is predominately found in the lower southeastern regions of North America and along the Gulf Coast states. The Double-crested Cormorant is found all throughout North America, into the Pacific Northwestern regions all the way to the Alaskan straits, and as far east to Maine and Nova Scotia. Both of these birds will forage primarily on small fish. It’s fun to watch their unbelievable talent once a meal is caught! What’s especially entertaining is the Anhinga as it wiggles and maneuvers the fish off of its bill slinging it into the air and catching it in its mouth, all while not getting barbed by the gills or fins. It’s pretty amazing to observe!

Florida’s Freshwater Springs EXPLORING THE WONDERS OF FLORIDA'S NATURAL SPRINGS WITH KIDS Here in Florida, we’re lucky to have endless opportunities to explore nature—especially the water. Did you know there are more than 700 natural springs in Florida? That’s more than any other place on Earth.

As an adult, I’ve explored dozens of the freshwater springs, snorkeling in the clear water among river otters, manatees, and turtles. I have my favorites for various reasons. But, when taking my toddler to the springs, it was an entirely different experience.

Manatee Springs State Park is one of my favorite camping spots. I love the boardwalk through the cypress forest, kayaking on the Suwannee river, the deeper swimming hole and the abundance of wildlife. But, when I took my then three-year-old (who could swim) the lack of a shallow water play area meant he couldn't explore the water on his own terms. The spring also has more of a current that leads to the river.

When taking young kids to the springs, one of the most important things to consider, for me, is shallow water access. In the cooler winter months, even with the springs being a constant 72 degrees, sometimes my son just wanted to play in the water’s edge rather than fully submerge. Manatee and wildlife viewing, kayaking, tubing, are all important considerations, too!

Even if your kids are strong swimmers, I suggest having a life jacket to help them enjoy the experience even more. It offers flotation so they can focus on observing the underwater world. A lightweight wetsuit can also help littles stay warm during winter months and offers some buoyancy, as well as protection from rocks.

TWO OF MY FAVORITE SPRINGS TO VISIT WITH YOUNG KIDS: • SILVER GLEN SPRINGS RECREATION AREA This hidden gem is located in Ocala National Forest and has a nice ramp to the enter the water, with a shallow rocky shoreline the kids can explore, as well as shallow water areas for swimming. We always see tons of fish and wildlife here. My son particularly enjoyed a short hike called the Springs Boil Trail that leads to bubbling sand that boils in the water.

• ICHETUCKNEE SPRINGS STATE PARK: This park, west of Jacksonville, has several adventures for families, from tubing down the slow, clear river or swimming in the head spring with a shallow area for littles, though it is somewhat rocky.

Dolphins and Drones

between the two males of each species is a means to prevent hybridization, since they do not need to fight over food or space.

Recently, our WDP team published a study in the journal Southeastern Naturalist documenting the first-known case, to our knowledge, of the same two species of dolphins interacting off the Southeast coast of Florida. “During our Florida surveys we have seen spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, but never together,” Herzing said.

The drone video footage was collected from a local manta ray biologist, Jessica Pate, who stumbled upon the dolphins while studying mantas and noticed interesting behavior. This study highlights the value of drones in helping scientists collect previouslyunavailable data, including habitat details, body size, and health information, Herzing said, as well as the importance in collaboration among scientists.

The drone footage initially revealed 23 bottlenose dolphins and one spotted dolphin. The bottlenose were chasing and hunting fish at the surface. The spotted dolphin tried to engage the bottlenose dolphins by swimming ahead in an inverted position, thought to often indicate a solicitation and by occasionally tail-slapping the water surface, which is often interpreted as an attention-getting signal. The spotted dolphin was never seen feeding. Based on this information, we suspect the interaction was for social reasons.

More data on mixed-species groups in Florida are needed to answer why these groups form and their functions, Herzing said, especially considering the impact on cetaceans with changing environmental conditions. “It’s important, as it is in all field studies, to have a baseline of information from which we can compare new observations.”

To study dolphins and whales often means hours…and hours and hours on a boat deck searching through binoculars for fins slicing the water’s surface, with a limited view. But, imagine what we could learn with a bird’s eye view? That’s the benefit of drones, when used responsibly (and legally) to study marine mammals.

Denise Herzing, Ph.D., founded the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP) in 1985 and has studied underwater behavior and communication of dolphins in the Bahamas for 40 years. It’s not always easy. It takes a lot of time and effort to find the dolphins since we don’t tag them to track them.

Part of WDP’s mission has been to gain a deeper understanding of how and why two species of dolphins that live in the Bahamas, Atlantic spotted dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, coexist, and in particular, their aggression towards each other. Pioneering Solar Powered Luxury Yachts Silent-Yachts was founded by Michael and Heike Köhler in Austria on the dream of making luxury yachting work truly hand in hand with nature by minimising the impact on the marine environment while still providing utmost levels of comfort without compromises. The company creates an independent and environmentally friendly yachting experience which combines the silent cruising of a sailing boat with the luxury of a motor yacht.

Solar-pioneers Heike and Michael have spent over 6,000 days on board their yachts and sailed over 75,000 NM all around the world. After travelling the oceans on conventional motor boats and sailboats for 40 years, they came to the conclusion that there had to be a better way to supply the propulsion system and the onboard appliances of yachts with energy.

Based on the results of five years and 15,000 NM of sailing on a test catamaran, they started the design and construction of the 46-feet boat, the first fully self-sufficient and purely solar powered bluewater-catamaran. They launched it in 2009 and it was nothing less than the first ocean-going yacht which exclusively used solar energy, not only for actual propulsion, but also to provide energy to all household appliances on board. This includes everything ranging from cooktops, stoves and the freezer to the air conditioning, washing machine and watermaker. Heike and Michael used the prototype for 5 years and it proved the concept very reliable as there was absolutely no maintenance or repair work required on the solar panels, the batteries or the electric motors.

Launched in 2016 as the first serial production solar powered yacht in the world, the Silent 64 marked the dawn of a new e-ra of sustainable luxury yachting. In February of 2018, the yacht crossed the Atlantic Ocean as the first serial production solar powered bluewater catamaran. The starting point of the journey was Cartagena, Spain. Until Florida, it covered 5,500 NM in total. The crossing from Cape Verde to Barbados only took her 16 days, with an average speed of 6 knots.

Over the last 10 years the company has shown enormous growth. Nowadays Silent Group includes several divisions: production of solar-electric catamarans ranging from 60 to 120 feet, innovative e-tenders and superfast e-RIBs at three sites in Italy, Turkey and Thailand, yacht management, brokerage and charter, and a unique eco-friendly resorts business with locations in the Bahamas and Fiji.

When it comes to environmental impact, the product life cycle plays a significant role. The longer the product stays up to date, the longer its respective life cycle is, the less waste is produced as a result.

Therefore, the core components of every Silent yacht, such as the batteries and solar panels, can be easily exchanged. This upgradability of hardware is unique to Silent-Yachts, making sure that all our models can take advantage of the latest technology, enabling them to actually improve their energy 66

production and storage capacities many years after they were originally launched into the water.

And in order to make a yacht even more sustainable a client can order a kite wing customization. While traditional sails would throw shades on the panels and decrease the overall efficiency of the solar electric drivetrain as a result, our optional kite sail system still allows all the wind lovers to make use of this evergreen source of energy. Available for all Silent-Yachts models, the kite flies at much higher altitudes where winds are far stronger than at the levels of the vessel. This enables it to create up to 10x more power in comparison to a regular sail, perfectly complementing the unique and eco-friendly solar cruising experience.

There are tens of Silent yachts in production now, including the flagship 120-feet supercatamaran that is able to accommodate a private submarine and the order book is filled until 2025.

New Dimensions and Forever Dreams Happy 2024! We made it to the other side and are here and now. What are we going to do with it?

Every year, I very much enjoy this particular opportunity in time where we are afforded (hopefully) some time for reflection to dive into our vision for the new canvas, setting some milestones, and a general check-in to feel out where we are in our lives and where we want to go. Direction is important, and to know that, we must ask ourselves the important questions. The self-inquiry process doesn’t have to be complicated and it can go a little like this: In terms of my whole plan or vision (maybe remind yourself of the dreams you had when you were 7, 14, 21), where am I? Where do I want to go from here? How am I going to make that happen?

As I began to ask myself these questions at the close of the year, I start thinking about the dimensions I can give to this self-inquiry process, and I feel really called to give depth to this work, at least in my current state of being. Maybe because particularly for me, this year seems like it will 72

mark the end of an era, represents a rite of passage, and is particularly meaningful and exciting. Then again, why do we even wait for those “perfect moments” to arise instead of creating them?

Which leads to my initial premise, what will I create with what I have? What dreams do I still owe myself? How am I going to make it happen?

As I was sharing with a client recently, this is important stuff, it’s our life after all, and curating the experience is what we came to do.

I truly believe life is bigger and romanticizing is not only helpful but necessary. We forget to dream and play, and get carried away by this life that ends up controlling us, dictates what we do with our time and energy. Oftentimes, we even feel obliged to do certain things or feel like we have to engage, without asking ourselves, do I genuinely connect with this? I’ve never been a half-a** anything, but depth, purpose, and progress seem to round out the vibe for this incoming new season for me. In Mary Oliver’s words: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Food for thought.

Jazz has been recognized by the United States Congress as a “National Treasure.” Jazz arose in the vibrant culture of New Orleans around the beginning of the 20th century. From there, it spread to major cities such as New York and Chicago, exploding into the dance halls and speakeasies of the Roaring Twenties. Aided by the advancement of recording technology and radio broadcasting, big-band swing jazz became all the rage during the 1930s and '40s. During the following decades, many new forms of jazz music arose, including free jazz, hard bop, smooth jazz, Latin jazz, and jazz fusion. Today, jazz music continues to be played and enjoyed around the world. The founders aimed to foster and enhance interest in and appreciation of jazz music along the Treasure Coast. Its mission is to promote its accessibility to the public through live performances and to encourage the development of area jazz talent while creating access to popular jazz performers.

past decades by bringing jazz greats such as Count Basie and Lionel Hampton to the Treasure Coast. Bringing internationally, nationally recognized, and upcoming jazz artists to the Treasure Coast is our goal for the future.

We award music scholarships to jazz students, which we see as the future. Our April 6th concert will feature Ryan Dillahay, TCJazz 2019 Scholarship winner. Ryan is a 2019 graduate of Indian River Charter High School and completed his studies at the renowned University of North Florida School of Music. With Ryan, along with Danny Bacher, Clarence Palmer, Wycliffe Gordon, Lisa Kelly, and JB Scott, the TCJazz Society, Inc. is set to offer an exciting classic and progressive jazz season.
