editor’s note Happy. New. Year.
I look forward to our “Blue” issue every January! It is one of my favorite issues we do. As we ring in the New Year, I hope you feel renewed and refreshed. It’s a new year with lots of new opportunities. We truly live in paradise. While our northern states are feeling blue trying to stay warm for the winter, we are staring at beautiful, aqua blue water and warm, blue skies. This issue, we focus on one of our most valuable resources: our water. Earth is made up of 75% water. I hope we realize how important that is for Indian River County, and the surrounding counties. The health of our waters has been a big topic of conversation. Instead of pointing a finger to blame others, let’s work together as a community and all do our part to move forward in protecting our beautiful, BLUE water that surrounds us. Whether it is the ocean or our lagoon, rivers or lakes, it’s time that we ALL work together to keep our waterways as healthy as they can be. There are things we can all do to help. One person can make a difference! Growing up in Florida, I have always had a love for mermaids. I’ve dreamed of being a mermaid. Recently, I found out that I actually can be one, at least for a weekend. So to all my fellow mermaid dreamers, even if you don’t want to jump in and swim with a tail, at least go visit Weeki Wachee State Park. It is a true, old fashioned Florida experience! Write me or call me, I’d love to hear how your trip went! This issue we celebrate our 2nd anniversary of Portfolio. Time sure flies when you’re having fun! I am really humbled by this experience. I LOVE meeting all of you wonderful people. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park Mermaids ARE real! They can be found at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, a crystal clear spring on the Gulf of Mexico, less than an hour north of Tampa. Weeki Wachee, where the temperature remains 72 degrees year round, was named by the Seminole Indian. It means “little spring or winding river.” The 538-acre property first opened in 1947 and became a state park almost five years ago. When these seductive sirens perform for guests, the entire audience becomes mesmerized by their underwater ballet. Although the mermaids are the biggest attraction, patrons visit for many other reasons. Weeki Wachee offers a boat cruise on which you can catch a glimpse of wildlife and learn about the park’s history. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available just outside the park. There are wildlife shows too. The spring also feeds into a water park, Buccaneer Bay, which has a white sand beach, multiple water slides, a lazy river, and a children’s play area. T
he Environmental Learning Center (ELC) offers innovative programs, with the understanding that everything affects the environment for adults and families. Using proven behavior change techniques, these programs target specific behaviors detrimental to watersheds—specifically in our region, the Indian River Lagoon. The ELC conducts over 450 of these educational ecological adventure programs each year. The ELC has had a soft launch of its behavior change campaign called “Livin’ for the Lagoon.” To start out, the ELC is focusing on three low-cost or no-cost ways families can help the lagoon right now. Conservation and protection of the Indian River Lagoon starts at home. No matter where you live, the ELC hopes everyone will be “Livin’ for the Lagoon.”
1. RRR. Reduce, reuse, recycle – in that order People focus on recycling because it is easy, but reducing is the most important step. First and foremost, buy and use less! If all people on Earth used as much ‘stuff ” as Americans, we would need 3-5 times more space on Earth to accommodate everybody. Buy only what you need. Use all of
what you buy. Give your unused items to someone who can put them to good use. Reduce waste by selecting products with minimal packaging. Today, Americans recycle more than in the past. Many communities offer curbside recycling. If it’s available to you, do it! If not, make the effort to recycle what you can. And, don’t forget about food waste. Compost kitchen scraps and school lunch vegetable matter. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food waste is the #1 least recycled material. 2. Native Plants Native plants are the best choices because they have adapted to local conditions and thrive with the least care. They don’t require fertilizers, or additional watering. Replace small sections of your turf with attractive islands of native plants. Diminishing grass in sections of your lawn saves water and even reduces your carbon footprint (by not using as much lawn equipment). Ultimately benefitting the Indian River Lagoon.
on the ground degrades and the nitrogen and phosphorus are carried to the lagoon. Excessive nutrients cause algal blooms and rob the water of oxygen needed to support aquatic life. Even worse, pet waste harbors bacteria that is harmful or toxic to the Indian River Lagoon. Sixty percent of dog owners clean up their pet’s waste, but 84 tons of dog waste is left on the ground every day in the five-county area of the Indian River Lagoon. Lessons from a Loggerhead The Case for a Healthy Ocean made by a Loggerhead Turtle
O
ne of the amazing things about sea turtles is that they live many decades in multiple habitats that are separated by thousands of miles. Unfortunately, at some point during their lifelong journey, they are likely to ingest, get stuck, or become entangled in discarded garbage that litters our ocean. I’ve seen turtles with plastic in their gut and hogtied with monofilament fishing line. Sometimes, I see more bizarre entanglements. On July 6, 2013, I received a call from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) informing me that a live sea turtle was stuck in a chair off Vero Beach. As it turned out, I was the perfect person to receive this news. I have been fortunate enough, or some might say crazy enough, to hand capture thousands of sea turtles during permitted research and rescue work, including dozens weighing over 300 pounds. I immediately grabbed my gear and headed out. It didn’t take long to find the imperiled turtle. It was an adult loggerhead, making a lot of splashing as she fought to surface and breath. While a group of curious beachgoers looked on, I borrowed a board from the lifeguards and paddled off the beach. There are several things you should know about loggerheads, one is they are federally protected and two is they like to bite. Fortunately they have slow reaction times, or I would look like a crusty pirate with missing appendages. This turtle was no exception, which is a good sign because a feisty loggerhead is a healthy one. I saw that she was tightly wedged in the base of a metal chair. After ditching the board, I swam up, grabbed her from behind and kicked the two of us to the beach. The reaction from shore was inspiring. At least four beachgoers helped me get her out of the water, free her from the chair and hold her during my examination. She was in good shape at just over 3-feet-long and weighing approximately 220 pounds. We released her to a round of applause. The chair was taken to a more appropriate resting place, next to the nearest garbage can. This one undoubtedly came from a boat, though it is common to see beach chairs end up in the water. The rescue was a reminder that we can unintentionally affect marine life through careless action, including those many of us admire, the sea turtles. Photos and story by Rick Herren. Florida Oceanographic a Treasure Coast Gem
T
here’s something magical about touching a stingray, seeing a sea turtle up-close, or witnessing a feeding frenzy in a 750,000gallon Game Fish Lagoon. You can experience that and more at Florida Oceanographic Society’s 57-acre Coastal Center, located on Hutchinson Island in Stuart. Less than 40 miles south of Vero Beach, this marine life and nature center offers hands-on discovery for all ages. “Watching a child pet a stingray or touch a sea star for the first time is a beautiful thing,” says Mark Perry, executive director of Florida Oceanographic Society. “At first, many are timid or scared, but once they learn more about these animals, not only do they work up the nerve to touch them, they want to protect them. That’s our main objective at Florida Oceanographic—we want to inspire people of all ages to appreciate and preserve our coastal environment for generations to come.” For the past 50 years, the not-for-profit Florida Oceanographic Society has inspired environmental stewardship of Florida’s coastal ecosystems through education and research. Its expansive Coastal Center features a Game Fish Lagoon with nurse sharks and various species of local game fish, a Sea Turtle Pavilion with daily educational programs, Stingray and Sea Star Touch Tanks, Frances Langford Visitors Center with aquariums and gift shop, numerous exhibits, nature trails, and more. They also offer educational programs for all ages and conduct research, advocacy and restoration programs that promote a healthy coastal environment. “We’re leading efforts in researching, monitoring and restoring habitats in South Florida, particularly in the southern portion of the Indian River Lagoon,” Perry says. The Indian River Lagoon is North America’s most bio-diverse estuary, home to more than 4,300 species of plants and animals, including 36 rare and endangered species.

Vincent Encomio, Ph.D., Florida Oceanographic’s director of scientific research, spearheads the effort to restore the oyster population devastated by fresh-water discharges from Lake Okeechobee. The oysters are critical to cleaning the water and providing habitat and food for more than 300 estuarine species. “A key component of our research and restoration programs is the involvement of the community in our efforts,” Perry explains. Florida Oceanographic coordinates several programs in which volunteers are directly involved in research and data collection, including a weekly water quality monitoring program. This information is then disseminated directly to the local community. These “citizen science” programs foster not only knowledge, but also stewardship of Florida’s treasured ecosystems. Exotic Aquarium Fish Raised Sustainably in Vero
P
roaquatix is an aquaculture company engaged in the production of marine ornamental fish and macroalgae. Established in 2001 and under new management since 2008, Proaquatix has been steadily expanding its availability list of aquacultured, meaning captive bred, products, which include various species of clownfish, gobies, blennies, basslets, gamefish and macroalgae to both wholesalers and retailers around the world. The benefits of aquacultured products over their wild-caught counterparts have been widely documented. Aquacultured products are environmentally friendly since nothing is taken from the wild, and all production is done in closed systems, which eliminate the potential for pollution. Survival rates of fish and macroalgae, during and after shipping are also much higher. This is a reoccurring problem with shipments of wild caught specimens, which frequently experience high mortality rates. Aquacultured fish tend to adapt very easily to aquarium life because they are raised under similar conditions. Through selective breeding, desirable traits can be passed on from generation to generation. The new “designer clownfish� movement is a result of such selection, where beautiful colors and patterns never seen before in wild caught clownfish are now widely available to the public. Vero Beach Marine Lab Seahorses and Their Life Under the Sea
Q
uietly nestled behind the Tracking Station Beach Park is Florida Institute of Technology’s beachfront property, Vero Beach Marine Laboratory (VBML). For over 20 years, marine researchers and private companies have been working hard in order to better understand oceanic organisms. All of the projects fit under the umbrella of farming aquatic organisms, also known as aquaculture. From evaluating marine plants as an alternative source of biodiesel fuel, to farming tropical fishes for the pet trade, private companies and scientists have been able to test their methods by utilizing the facility’s year-round access to filtered Atlantic seawater. Vero Beach Marine Lab manager and resident scientist, Nancy Pham, is currently studying seahorse biology and conservation. Unlike most fish, seahorses swim upright, have no scales and no teeth. And, it is the male that carries the eggs and gives birth! These characteristics have made seahorses a popular fish to have as pets and to display at aquariums. Rather than harvesting seahorses from the wild, many studies at the lab have focused on how to farm seahorses to meet the demand for them for the aquarium trade. To better understand the seahorses’ physical characteristics, Nancy, Adeljean Ho, a Ph.D candidate, and Dr. Junda Lin are farming two seahorse species found in the Caribbean to study their body shape throughout their early life stages. The two Caribbean species, the lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) and longsnout seahorse (Hippocampus reidi), hybridized in the research tanks of the lab, and therefore the hybrid offspring’s body shapes are also being compared to their parental species. There are over 30 species of seahorses located across the world. Two species of seahorses can be found clinging onto seagrass or mangroves in the Indian River Lagoon. The lined seahorse, (Hippocampus erectus) can grow up to eight inches long, while the dwarf seahorse (Hippocampus zosterae) is no larger than a standard paperclip. Given the status of the seagrass beds and water quality in the Indian River Lagoon, it is very important to evaluate the present status of their wild populations. Seahorse babies and adults heavily depend on seagrass as a habitat to shelter themselves from predators and find food across the western Atlantic coast. Therefore, to better understand their level of genetic diversity, Nancy is currently collaborating with government agencies and public aquariums to obtain wild seahorses and measure the level of diversity of the lined seahorse in Florida, Virginia, and New York. The results from this study will provide information to aid in forming policies and management plans for fisheries management and conservation. fish research and conservation learning more about these fish and their habitats, but in applying the results to conservation to ensure that the fisheries remain healthy or can be restored. At present, in the Indian River Lagoon, BTT is collaborating with FIT professor Jon Shenker to conduct research on juvenile and sub-adult tarpon. One of the top questions of the research is to examine what habitats tarpon use in the Indian River Lagoon and how things like changes in water quality impact these patterns. Another topic of study is if juvenile tarpon are able to successfully use mosquito impoundments as nursery habitats. Upcoming research in the lagoon will also include snook, red drum and other economically important fish species, and research on how to rear some of these species in captivity. This will be used to restore fish populations as part of an overall conservation strategy. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust and collaborators also conduct fish habitat research throughout Florida, the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Gulf of Mexico, contributing to coastal conservation throughout the region. The lessons learned across this region will help efforts toward restoration of the Indian River Lagoon.

aron Adams joined the faculty of Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) in April 2013, bringing with him the science-based, non-profit organization Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT). The Vero Beach Marine Lab now hosts BTT headquarters, housing two staff—Aaron Adams and Bob Halstead— on the premises. Bonefish & Tarpon Trust is dedicated to ensuring that bonefish, tarpon and permit populations, and the fisheries they support, remain healthy. The trust is also helping to restore the fisheries that have declined. BTT accomplishes this mission by funding conservation-focused research; working with local, national, and regional resource management agencies to improve regulations to protect these fisheries; along with funding and conducting education of anglers and the public. BTT uses scientific findings to advocate for fisheries conservation and works to ensure coastal habitats used by bonefish, tarpon, and permit are protected. Much of the research that is conducted by Adams, BTT, and BTT’s collaborators is focused on coastal fish habitat ecology. They define which habitats are most important, analyze fish movement patterns, identify spawning locations, determine the impact of human-induced habitat changes on fish, and similar work. All of this research is conducted with goals of not only

he latest addition to the Florida Institute of Technology Marine Research Facility at Vero Beach is Florida Algae LLC. Florida Algae began two years ago as a research and product development company focused on the commercialization of healthy alternative food products made from algae. The use of algae in farming benefits us in many ways because it is a much more efficient way to produce more vegetable protein per acre, and uses far less fresh water. The company is devoted to the development of environmentally safe and organic uses of our land and water resources. As the World’s ever increasing population stresses the planet’s limited resources, it will be extremely important to utilize algae as a food crop. In June of 2013, Florida Algae introduced its first food product, produced here in Vero Beach.

It is known as Sprulina Ice, which is grown at the FIT facility under the approval of the USDA and the Florida Department of Aquaculture. This newly developed version of an ancient food source is now currently available in health food stores and online at www.spirulinaice.com. The product is an organic, raw, frozen, vegan, high-protein smoothie booster that contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals. The protein levels are above 70% and the nutrient content is well beyond that of most land-farmed vegetables. Algae products will help increase our per-acre production of protein in the future that will benefit us all. he vegetable garden at the Florida Veggies & More Farm will soon be sprouting from the sea in addition to the land! Florida Veggies & More has installed an aquaponics system in a greenhouse which will be able to produce fish (tilapia) in addition to growing lettuces and other vegetables. The Florida Veggies garden began as a hydroponic garden—the vegetables are produced with a sustainable water and nutrient mixture, which is injected into plants growing in a coconut husk. No soil is used in the vegetable production. Now, the farm has a total of 4 greenhouses as well as 2,000 potted plants, growing in vertical towers. Aquaponics is also an inovative way to garden. The aquaponics system combines hydroponics and aquaculture, allowing for the growth of fresh vegetables in the same system as the farming of tilapia. Once the system is operating at full capacity, over 50 pounds of tilapia each quarter will be harvested, as well as over 50 heads of lettuce weekly. Both the hydroponic vertical gardens and the aquaponics system can be installed in backyard gardens, which can be viewed and are sold through the farm store. Florida Veggies & More is a non-profit organization. The organization’s mission is twofold: 1) To locally grow nutritious food products for distribution to those in need 2) To integrate education and training for those seeking a second chance. To sustain farm operations, 20% of the produce is sold through the farm store, Oceanside Farmer’s Market, and the Fellsmere Farmer’s Market. Message in a Bottle

One hundred years ago, the oldest known message in a bottle ever found, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was thrown out over a foggy sea. Captain C. Hunter Brown, a research scientist at the Glasgow School of Navigation, released the bottle into the North Sea in 1914. The message wasn’t to a lover in a far away place, or a confession of his hopes and dreams, but it was instead an attempt to study the North Sea’s currents. The bottle is one of 1,890 bottles released that day in 1914. Each bottle contains a note that reads, “Please state where and when this card was found, and then put it in the nearest Post Office. You will be informed in reply where and when it was set adrift. Our object is to find out the Direction of the Deep Currents of the North Sea.” So far, 315 of the bottles have been found, and the information has been entered in Capt. Brown’s log, which is still maintained by Marine Scotland Science in Aberdeen. While the currents will encourage the bottles to stay in the North Sea, who’s to say that 100 years later, one couldn’t show up on the shores of Vero Beach? Keep your eyes peeled this year for a very persistent message in a bottle that has thrashed throughout the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean and you could be a part of Capt. iding waves without a board is an amazing feeling. It’s the closest you’ll ever get to feeling the real power that surrounds us. It’s intense yet it’s so simple, just you and the wave. Your fins are like your dancing shoes, the ocean creates the music, and that’s all you need. Bodysurfing came natural to me. It’s the biggest part of my career as an Ocean Rescue Lifeguard. It puts me out there in the biggest and smallest waves, and prepares me for all conditions. When you first take off it’s like being a dolphin or a torpedo blasting out of the water, the power is remarkable! Depending on how big the wave

is, next comes the drop. Racing down the face of the wave is like flying down the best slide you’ve ever been on. Then comes the fun part, just like a surfer, you set your line to trim and plane on the palm of your hand. Heading down the line of the wave, hoping to get inside a big barrel or just experience one heck of a ride is all part of the thrill. Every wave is different but the same, you just have to dance with it however it moves you. You let it take the lead. Enjoy it for the fun of it! Get out there and try it! An Oasis Hidden in the Jungle Hidden behind a tranquil waterfall and lush landscape is the area’s only complete health and fitness club, the Jungle Club. The 58,000 square foot Health and Fitness Complex is equipped with state-of-the-art resistance and cardiovascular machines and features the largest selection of free weights on the Treasure Coast. Artful Imprinting Charlotte Anabar Designs Charlotte Anabar Tripson entertained an early love for vintage graphics, chic design, vibrant colors and the age-old letterpress. Starting first with a design blog, charlotteanabar.com, she began to develop her personal aesthetic and branding. Two years ago, after hours and hours of browsing the Internet for the perfect print and coupled with a loss of interest in generic stationary, she decided to start her own design business. With her experience interning at Mama’s Sauce Letterpress & Silk Screen (Winter Park) and Rifle Paper Company (Winter Park), she felt she had the skill and knowledge to tackle her own designs. Her artwork is bright and whimsical, enticing and recognizable. Printing and selling her own artwork is just one of many cookie jars Charlotte has her hands in. Various businesses around Florida use Charlotte Anabar as their social media guru and print advertising artist. “I gained trust from business owners at a young age through word of mouth and my hard work. That’s a really amazing and satisfying feeling!” She will be graduating from the University of Central Florida in May 2014 with a degree in Digital Media, concentrating in web and graphic design. Another passion of Charlotte’s is her family’s new venture into the wedding business via her parent’s private and historic estate, Waldo’s Secret Garden. “I have this intense creative pull inside me that makes it so if I had to be indoors all day I would go bananas. I am in the process of creating my own unconventional path to make sure my job never (or at least rarely!) feels like work.” Some days I’m a wedding coordinator, others a photographer, graphic designer, illustrator, web designer—but the creative process that I get to experience every day is what makes it all worth it!”

A Design Collaboration Home of Stacia and Leo Schuele
W
hen Stacia and Leo asked me to help do the interiors of their 3,800 square foot home at Sea Colony, I had no idea how fun it would be! After a look at the home still under construction, we put together a concept of what the owners imagined their house would look like. They wanted a fresh, clean, casual and chic look. The best part was they knew exactly what they wanted. We would often vote on an item if we were undecided. Together, we created a fabulous custom-made pair of sofas and a custom headboard, which was beautifully executed by Joey at Miracle Upholstery. Also, Theresa Interiors did an amazing job on some difficult fabrics for window treatments. Snow’s and Elgin Marble more than fulfilled our design needs for an elegant guest bathroom piece. Doing a home this size is a team effort, using the talents of many people working together to create a stunning home. I have seen many new homes in Vero but the construction of this house by Keith Franco at Brown Dog Construction is exceptional in quality and attention to detail. As a designer, I can’t help but love to see what collaboration can accomplish and the joy of seeing the faces of happy clients. It’s time for a glass of fine wine. Waldo’s Secret Garden
Nearly three years ago, the Tripson family had the idea to turn their historic property into a unique event venue. Open only 6 months out of the year, the family entertains hundreds of guests every Saturday for weddings and receptions. “We are putting on amazing productions and bringing people joy,”said Hildie Tripson, who also owns Waldo’s Garden. Waldo’s Garden is a floral business, that Hildie has developed over 25 years ago. The rustic charm and haunting ambiance of Waldo’s Secret Garden is quickly observed by all who visit the grounds. One of the most alluring attributes to this modern day secret garden is that it’s one of the few venues in Indian River County that can fit anywhere from 50-300 guests on its 12-acre parcel of land. Waldo E. Sexton slowly but surely designed this haven using an abundance of driftwood, iron, and recognizable pieces from the collection of well-known architect, Addison Mizner. Waldo broke ground on this unique property around 1911. Section by section, the main house was built initially for himself and his family. The driftwood inspired house was built in the 40’s to accommodate his daughter, Barbara, and her new husband, John Tripson. Tied together by a jungle and whimsical sidewalk, the two historic homes have become an ode to Waldo’s love for large, rough wood and rustic construction. The family developed Vero Beach Dairy in 1922, on the back parcel of the property (later changed to Tripson Dairy). The once thriving agricultural business, now inactive, remains untouched to preserve its apparent charm. Waldo possessed an urge to create unusual attractions, a trait he shrewdly did not deny, knowing the world loves an eccentric. Mark and Hildie Tripson have continued to maintain the historic ambiance that Waldo created over a century ago. They welcome others to enjoy it as well! Waldo’s Secret Garden not only entertained family members but dignitaries, astronauts and many others in its heyday—be sure to visit to become part of its rich tradition. Sebastian Inlet State Park 9700 South State Road A1A Melbourne Beach, FL 6 miles north of Vero Beach (321) 984-4852 The premier salt water fishing spot on Florida’s east coast, this park is a favorite for anglers nationwide for catching snook, redfish, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel from its jettys. Surfing is also a popular recreation
and several major competitions are held here every year. There are two museums within the park. The McLarty Museum features the history of the 1715 Spanish treasure fleet, and the Sebastian Fishing Museum tells the history of the areas fishing industry. beach safety BE AWARE OF TIDES: Always be aware of the tides when you are at the beach. Respect the ocean and stay safe.

TAKE YOUR TRASH OFF THE BEACH: Remove all your trash from the beach. Find a trash can! Plastic bags can kill birds, turtles, and other sea creatures that can mistake the bag for food. Bring extra trash bags with you and do your part to help keep the beach beautiful. Love your ocean! SUPERVISE CHILDREN: Stay near your children and keep your eye on them. Never let children play in the water unsupervised. Play close to a lifeguard station. Teach your child to respect the ocean too. BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS RIP TIDES: Rip tides are strong currents that can pull a person away from the shore. If you get caught in a rip current, do not panic or struggle. Swim parallel to the beach and call for help. Never swim alone. Don’t swim out farther than you can swim back. It’s always best to swim near a lifeguard station. REPORT INJURED BIRDS OR MAMMALS: If you find an injured bird or mammal, do not touch it. Call 911 (non-emergency) and they will notify the proper authorities. Respect the Wildlife: Remember to do the “Stingray Shuffle” when entering shallow water to warn any stingrays that you’re coming
into their territory! It’s always a good idea to keep a small bottle of vinegar in your beach bag to quickly treat jellyfish stings. If snorkeling, be sure not to stand on or touch any reefs or wrecks. Respecting the wildlife helps ensure a successful beach day. LIFEGUARDS: Several places throughout the county offer lifeguarded beaches. At each station, signs are available to notify beach goers of current surf conditions along with appropriate beach flag warnings.
