Fall SPORTS 2025

WELCOME TO PORTER-GAUD

LETTER FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

THANK YOU!

On behalf of the Porter-Gaud Parents Association, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your contribution towards the promotion and support of PG athletics.

In alignment with the Porter-Gaud mission statement, we are committed to inspiring lives of purpose, learning, and service through cultivating each student’s God-given potential.

The PGPA reinforces this mission by providing support to a diverse group of student-athletes across a wide spectrum of sports. It is through your generosity that we can provide our athletes with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive and excel.

Welcome to Porter-Gaud,

We’re thrilled to have you with us and even more excited to showcase the dedication, talent, and passion of our Cyclone student-athletes and coaches.

Over the summer, these young men and women have pushed themselves through countless hours of workouts, reps, miles, and moments of adversity—all in preparation for the fall season. Their commitment is remarkable, and it wouldn’t be possible without the daily support from our faculty, administration, and especially you—the parents, guardians, and caregivers who fuel their early mornings and busy days.

We also want to recognize the incredible work of our grounds and facilities crew, whose efforts often go unseen but never go unnoticed. The beautiful fields and facilities you see today are a result of their pride and professionalism, and we are truly grateful for all they do.

This Fall Sports Program was created by the Porter-Gaud Parents Association (PGPA), a group of dedicated volunteers who work year-round to elevate the experience for our student-athletes. I’m especially thankful for their continued partnership, and I extend my appreciation to the many sponsors, advertisers, and supporters who have helped bring this program to life.

We hope you enjoy your time on our campus. So with that in mind…get out of your seat, get loud, and GO CYCLONES!

Porter-Gaud School: A Concise History

On October 25, 1867, the Reverend Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter visited the grave of his son, grieving the loss of life and the tumult of the Civil War. As he wept, a voice spoke to Rev. Porter. The day was clear and the birds were singing, yet this voice spoke distinctly, saying to Rev. Porter, “Stop grieving for the dead, and do something for the living… Take them and educate them.” And with these words, a seed was sown, a drive ignited, and a mission born. By December of 1867, Rev. Porter had embarked on the journey to educate the children of Charleston. The Orphan Home and School Association of the Church of the Holy Communion opened its doors to 425 boys and 125 girls.

In 1880, the school moved to the Federal Arsenal located at the corner of Ashley Avenue and Bee Street. Ironically, Rev. Porter sought the support of William Sherman, then the Secretary of War under President Lincoln, to secure this location for his growing school. Rev. Porter started the first football program in South Carolina at the school in 1881. In 1886, the Institute was renamed The Porter Academy, then the Porter Military Academy in 1891. St. Timothy’s Chapel, a building once used during the war to form bullets, became a beautiful chapel to form young minds and hearts. The building was named for the patron saint of young people, students, and anyone seeking guidance in their studies and careers, and still stands at this location. It was renamed after St. Luke, the patron saint of healing and healing professions, when the property was sold to the Medical University of South Carolina.

In 1964, PMA merged with two other reputable Charleston schools, the Watt School and the Gaud School, and relocated to its present location on Albemarle Point, officially becoming Porter-Gaud School.

Porter-Gaud started as a vision to educate the orphans and children of the Civil War and continues today to educate the children of Charleston.

It has been 157 years since Rev. Porter set out to “do something for the living.” During these years, Porter-Gaud School has experienced growth and change but one goal has remained: to inspire lives of purpose, learning, and service through cultivating each student’s God-given potential.

The Porter-Gaud Crest A Closer Look at

A crest is intended to be a visual representation of the ideals that an institution sees as the foundation of what and who they are. All of us have looked at the crest many times, never thinking about why the founders chose these particular symbols to represent their vision of Porter-Gaud School. To get a better grasp on the logic of these choices, you must first understand what these components represent.

The most obvious aspect of the Crest is the shape. The Porter-Gaud Crest is a beveled escutcheon crest. The bevel at the top of the crest represents a history of English or Anglican descent. The Anglican Church, otherwise known as the Church of England, is the basis for the Episcopal Church in the United States. The affiliation of Porter-Gaud with the Episcopal Church is the reason that the Bevel was placed at the top, or chief of the crest.

Inside the crest are several symbols that have significance. The first are the Bishop Miters in the Upper left-hand corner. These two miters represent authority and religious affiliation. These signify that the church has authority over the school. Next to the bishop miters sits the torch and the parchment. The torch signifies truth and intelligence, and the parchment represents academic achievement. Since its inception, Porter-Gaud has been an institution of high academic standards. The people that set the course for the future of Porter-Gaud placed the torch and the parchment in a prominent place in the crest to signify the commitment to academic excellence and the search for truth.

Running through the center of the crest is the chevron. This symbol signifies faithful service. Service has always been an important aspect of the life at Porter-Gaud. Inside the chevron sits three Fleur de Lis, representing purity in light. In a group of three it can represent the Trinity, reinforcing our ties to the church. Some also believe that there are three to represent the merging of the Porter Military Academy, The Gaud School, and the Watt School to create Porter-Gaud.

Beneath the Chevron is the laurel with berries. This represents triumph and honor. The placement at the base of the crest is significant as they represent the foundation of all the symbols above. Without these attributes, the other characteristics on the crest would not be attained.

Finally, the crest rests above the banner containing the motto “Fides, Honor, Scientia,” which translated means “Faith, Honor, Knowledge.” Just as the crest is a visual representation, the motto is a verbal representation of the ideals of an institution.

Reverend Porter’s belief in the qualities represented in this crest have been the cornerstone in creating a special environment for our students.
