Honourary Parchments
Ian Thompson
Kikino Métis Settlement member Ian Thompson is a recipient this year of a Portage College Honourary Parchment in Community Development. Ian works with stakeholder and Indigenous relations at Canadian Natural Resources Ltd, and has been a strong liaison between the company, the College and the community for several years.
“Ian is always eager to help when it comes to creating space for Indigenous connection, culture and celebration. He is a great friend of Portage College.” says Portage College President and CEO Nancy Broadbent.
Canadian Natural has been a long-standing partner for many Portage College events and campaigns, including community barbecues, trade shows and career fairs. Ian, who started with the company as a power-engineer, has been at the forefront of those partnerships - not just as a “company person” but as an invested and proud community member.
Ian can often be found flipping burgers at a community gathering, or leading conversations at trade shows, awareness events or fundraisers about working, living and learning in the region.
“Community is always important,” says Thompson, who was raised in the Kikino Métis Settlement, and graduated high school in Lac La Biche. He now raises his own family in the region. “I’ve always wanted to give back and help, especially when it comes to the younger generations and their education. I want to bring attention to post-secondary and how important it is.”
Going further to fortify Indigenous connections, Ian has been eager to lend Canadian Natural support – and his own – for Portage College initiatives like the Project of Heart, a component of the College’s continuing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. The project brings testimonials and personal stories from community members into focus through artwork displays crafted by Portage College students. Ian and Canadian Natural are also major supporters of the annual Métis Week celebrations at Portage College campus locations across northeastern Alberta.
Through Ian’s continuing support, Canadian Natural is also recognized as an advocate for the college’s student Food Bank and Portage College fundraising campaigns held across the region, ranging in scope from community-wide events to student-driven classroom initiatives.
Ian and Canadian Natural continue to help Portage College fulfill its mandate of bringing learning to the people of the region and beyond. For Ian, being able to bring education and awareness to the community he proudly calls home is not just a job, it’s a passion.
“It’s something that I take great pride in – to be able to give back to the community and work with the community, work with Portage College – it’s something I’m very proud of,” he said.
Honourary Parchments
Rhonda and Tom Jackson
Portage College is honoured to recognize two individuals who forge community and corporate excellence through their work with the Goodfish Lake Business Corporation at Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake First Nation #128. Rhonda Jackson is the Corporation’s Human Resources Manager. Tom Jackson is the Corporation’s CEO. The business duo, who are not directly related, are being awarded this year with Portage College Honourary Graduate parchments in the Business Administration program.
Tom and Rhonda worked in the industry sector and away from their Nation for more than 30 years. Returning to the Nation, Rhonda started as the executive assistant at the Goodfish Lake Business Corporation in 2018. The company operates several business initiatives including garment manufacturing, industrial laundry services, dry cleaning, and fire and safety services. The company also collaborates on projects with local industry and training partners. Rhonda was promoted to Manager of Human Resources in 2020 when Tom was hired as the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer. At that time, says Tom, a need was recognized for more training and education, and Portage College was selected as a partner.
That collaboration has helped more than 100 staff, including managers, supervisors, front-line administrative and finance workers, as well as the Logistics Department at the Business Corporation. The training has also expanded to provide the Nation’s band administration staff with management, leadership, customer service excellence, and administrative training.
Working with a corporate board of directors, Tom and Rhonda continue to use their own business knowledge, community understanding and a passion for education to expand on the community-run business that has been operating for almost five decades. The results of those efforts on the staff, the business, its many customers, and the community have been exemplary.
“Our staff members have been getting the best tools to learn, and we see the big lift in morale as confidence goes up. You see it and hear it. Those are the success stories,” said Rhonda, who sees her human resource role from an overall community perspective, not just within a business setting. She feels that capacity-building starts with the youngest generation. Giving school-age students a goal, one that could see them employed in their own community, is a pathway to bring more success stories and value to the people of Whitefish Lake First Nation.

Portage College President and CEO Nancy Broadbent echoes those sentiments.
“Whitefish Lake First Nation is so blessed to have two dedicated community leaders, willing to commit their time, energy, and passion to helping others. Portage College is honoured to have such strong partners and friends,” Broadbent said.
To help young community members on that path, Tom and Rhonda introduced the annual Peter Elzinga Business Award Scholarship (PEBAS). The scholarship allows two high school students to attend the Business Diploma and Bachelor of Business Degree program at Portage College. The scholarship, named for a previous board chairperson, ensures an ongoing commitment to leadership development for band, said Tom.
“It’s an investment in formal business training of the community’s future leaders,” he said.
Portage College Business Administration Diploma instructor Brian Thorne says Tom and Rhonda’s dedication will have lasting effects.
“These two business leaders have reached beyond their career stewardships and created a direct impact on so many employees today and will continue to impact employees tomorrow and for years to come,” said Thorne. “Tom and Rhonda have been visionary in their efforts to invest in the self-reliance and confidence of so many Indigenous People to achieve business excellence.”
