• Vessels over 350m have been handled previously on the River Tyne, but the practical limit is the 360m diameter turning circle at Jarrow (3.5 miles from the sea) which allows vessels up to 300m to be swung by tug.

The facilities at the Port of Tyne are outstanding, with two main purpose-built, lock-free cruise berths, Northumbrian Quay and Whitehill Point, capable of accommodating over 95% of the global cruise ship fleet. There are taxi services on site and easy access to public transport, with shuttle bus services to the nearby shopping centre or Metro train stations. It is only a short drive to the cities of Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Durham. And the top attractions - the coast, countryside, castles, culture, arts venues and city centres - are all less than an hour away by road.

The North East is home to some of the country’s most amazing castles, including Bamburgh, Alnwick and Warkworth, all situated in Northumberland’s magnificent countryside. Dramatic Bamburgh Castle dominates the rugged North Sea coastline, visible for miles around as it keeps watch over its beautiful beach, creating a spectacular landmark. This grand fortress holds tales of Anglo-Saxon Kings, Norman warriors and 18th-century Jacobites. Bamburgh village nestles around the green beneath the Castle where you can relax and sample delicious local produce. Famous for starring as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films and featuring in Downton Abbey, Alnwick Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. The picturesque town of Alnwick is a delight, with plenty of tea rooms, cafés, pubs and boutique shops to enjoy. Your guests might enjoy a visit to the quirky Barter Books, a treasure trove housed in a historic station, with open fires, cosy teas and its own model railway. Famous for finding and reviving the World War II slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On”, it’s become an international phenomenon.

FARNE ISLANDS

Not far from there is the unforgettable island sanctuary of Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is home to a seventh-century monastery which became known throughout Europe as the “Cradle of Celtic Christianity”. The Heritage Centre contains an electronic copy of the treasured Lindisfarne Gospels and there’s a distillery to sample the famous Lindisfarne Mead. The island is accessed by causeway when the tide is out – a dramatic and exciting visit.

The Farne Islands – the most exciting seabird sanctuary in the British Isles – are a must for wildlife lovers. A short boat trip takes you to see 23 varieties of birds close up, including 37,000 colourful puffins. The islands are also home to the largest breeding colony of grey seals in England with some 1,000 pups born there every year.

Today it remains Britain’s greatest Roman monument and there are fascinating urban and countryside visitor sites along its 80-mile stretch. 15,000 men took six years between AD122 and 128 to complete Hadrian’s Wall, and 2000 years later it is still a testament to their skills and ingenuity. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are many venues that offer a first-class exploration into its ruins and forts, some within minutes of the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal, others up to an hour’s drive away. All of them offer interactive exhibitions, reconstructions, excitingly presented archaeological collections, re-enactments and storytelling. Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend is the most excavated fort along the Wall, with surviving foundations of many buildings and part of the Wall itself. It also has a large interactive museum, full-scale reconstructions of a bath house and a section of the wall, as well as a 35-metre-high viewing tower.

HOUSESTEADS ROMAN FORT

Arbeia Roman Fort in the seaside town of South Shields has full-scale reconstructions of original buildings including the commander’s house and a soldiers’ barrack block. You can witness live excavations, re-enactments and storytelling and see one of the finest collections of finds from Roman Britain. Out in the countryside, Housesteads Roman Fort is the most complete fort, and Chesters ranks as the best example of a Roman Cavalry fort.

HANDS-ON HISTORY AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES Step back in time and take part in traditional craft-making at Britain’s greatest Roman monument – Hadrian’s Wall. Watch and learn from a master potter at the most complete Roman cavalry fort in Britain – Chesters Roman Fort, less than an hour’s drive away. Your guests can make a replica Roman Head Pot, which have been found on almost all large Roman sites. Or if your guests prefer some true graft in the great outdoors, then visit the picturesque Walltown – one of the best places to see Hadrian’s Wall – for some fun, practical training in the ancient craft of dry stone walling (a tradition which stretches back at least three and a half millennia). Built without any mortar or cement, dry stone walls are an important part of the North East landscape and building them is now regarded as an art. An unusual and ancient creative experience is glass blowing and there’s no better place in the UK to do it than the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, which celebrates the city’s glassmaking heritage. Sunderland is renowned as the birthplace of stained glassmaking in Britain. Create beautiful artwork out of hot glass with the guidance of experts in this stunning, contemporary building.

Make and sample some of the region’s popular dishes using local produce at the award-winning Blackfriars restaurant, located in a 13th-century former medieval friary in nearby Newcastle. Or head to the famous Wylam Brewery for a tour and taste of its award-winning North East ales. For overnight passengers a stargazing evening at Kielder Observatory is a magical experience. Witness some spectacular sights (the famous Northern Lights are often viewed) under some of the darkest skies, surrounded by some of the most stunning scenery in the UK – Kielder Water and Forest Park.

You don’t have to venture far before finding a horticultural oasis in the grounds of a splendid mansion, castle or country estate. From the quintessentially English hidden glories of Howick Hall, Crook Hall and Whalton Manor to one of Europe’s great contemporary gardens – The Alnwick Garden. Each contains gems of history and outdoor wonders, like the deer park at Raby Castle or the huge pre-Raphaelite paintings hanging in the 13,000 acre estate of Wallington Hall. Cragside was the revolutionary home of Lord Armstrong, the Victorian inventor and landscape genius. It is crammed full of ingenious gadgets (most of them still working) and also boasts one of the largest rock gardens in Europe. CRAGSIDE HOUSE

The Alnwick Garden has the world’s largest wooden tree house and the 38 swirling waterfalls of the Grand Cascade make up the UK’s biggest water feature. SUNDERLAND Angel of the North

Set in over 300 acres of beautiful countryside, cruise groups can travel by tram, omnibus or horse-drawn carriage. Costumed characters go about their daily lives in the town, the village school, a working farm of 1825, a railway, a mine, an 1800 Manor House and much more, all relocated and restored exactly as they were originally. There are themed cafés and shops, not least a traditional English sweet shop and famous fish and chips.
