Riverside… Like learning the names of the US Presidents in order, so begins our mental preparation for Porsche Owners Club’s Bi-annual CCW Buttonwillow Raceway event.

The counterclockwise configuration requires more than just a flip of the course in our mental track map library. Some corners are less difficult. Others more scary. Visuals and timing change. I like the flow of CCW and it seems most drivers do too. Although I don’t think a heard a single person say: “Yeah, that A-Section to Sunrise is my favorite part of the track.”

You know the one, where you can’t see the apex, the track just disappears, and patience (which is not the gift of most drivers) serves you best.

It was exciting to return to what I consider one of the best tracks we drive—in either direction. Just two years ago upon the completion of our event, the world changed overnight.

For me, and many of you, POC events were the motivation to work through the fear and uncertainty of a pandemic on our doorsteps (and often in our own homes).

With the introduction of COVID 19 to our vocabulary, normality vaporized overnight.

We all like the reassurance of “normal.”

It’s a welcome respite from all the things that tug at us in life. Normal isn’t boring; Photos: Vivar Getting into my car to race normalLuis is good. feels so normal. Comfortable. Comforting. Sitting low in the car, the smells and sounds, the view out of my chipped windshield, the welcome constriction of the harness, the routine of startup and rolling out. Normal. It’s what I crave when I can’t control what’s going on around me. Racing does that for me and it soothes my soul.

Driving on a racetrack is relaxing in its own strange way. The requirement for total focus allows parts of our brains that are normally spinning to get a rest. We seek the zone, to be one with our cars. Neutralizing the adrenaline to find calm is how we can deploy all of our senses to drive better. Clearing our minds of distractions allows us to process quickly, increase awareness, and rise to challenges. You may think that sounds kind of “woo-woo” weird, but I’d bet every person reading this knows what I’m talking about.

Buttonwillow CCW has a few unforgiving areas and our group wasted no time finding them. To tag onto the Sesame Street theme of years ago, one could summarize that parts of our weekend were “brought to you by

the color yellow.” We had lots of yellow flags. The cold and dusty track conditions, quickly changing tire pressures and temperatures, and tricky bits of the track made for more offs and spins than we typically experience. If you were lucky enough to get in some practice on Friday, you had an advantage and got up to speed faster than those who didn’t. Yellow flags played into the races allowing spread out packs to regroup. Kudos to the race leaders who took control, followed the rules, and bunched up the pack when the double yellow was flown.

As a double points weekend, the competition across all groups was intense. Our Club’s success is shown in the growing number of cars in all run and race groups. GT3 is getting huge with 17 cars competing at BW. Boxster Spec, the usual entry point for wheel-to-wheel racing, has grown from 8-10 cars several years ago to 26 entries at BW (and we were missing 5-6 of our regular attendees). And there are more to come with recent graduates of Racers Clinic. Our multi class group of Time Trialers and PDS drivers who are challenging themselves to master their car’s performance, both on and off the track, added to the great attendance. Growth in all groups serves to amp up the competition and creates the front, mid, and rear pack race-within-a-races that make this sport so fun whether you’re the fastest kid on the track or the not-so-fastest.

The Red Races draw spectators to the lookout above the track. Energy and anticipation fill the air as the driver on Pole paces the group. GREEN GREEN GREEN!!! The explosion of a collective 10,000+ HP is unleashed.

Such a rush! The short run from Start/Finish to Sunset follows as every single person holds their breath, whispering “get through cleanly.” These are heart pounding moments. Breath holding moments. Exhales of relief as they make it through without incident to battle over the next 13 laps. In the front, GT1 fielded four cars and the competition was fierce. In Saturday’s race GT1 was taken 1-2-3 by Mike Monsalve, Alexandra Hainer, and Loren Beggs (with less than 1/10th of a second difference in their best lap times) and Sunday it was Kevin Roush P1, Alexandra Hainer P2, and Loren Beggs P3. GT2 winners on Saturday and Sunday were Eric Olberz P1, Darrell Troester P2, and John Heldman P3. GT3 racers kept the pressure on each other finishing P1 for Kevin Roush, P2 Nathan Johnson, and P3 Eben Benade on Saturday, and Eben taking P1 on Sunday, followed by Alex Filsinger P2, and Nathan Johnson P3. GT4 class is rebuilding as folks have moved up to GT3. Returning to racing with POC, Tom Stone 12

took 1st, Jim Steedman 2nd, and Jim Salzer 3rd on Saturday. For Sunday’s race GT4 had just two competitors after Jim Salzer’s tired motor called it quits. But guess what? Jim gets a new motor!! Tom Stone finished P1 and Jim Steedman P2.

The Orange Racers were led around the track by Anders Hainer and Bryan Van Noy, with P3 taken in Race 1 by Chris MacDuff. In Saturday’s second race we had the same 1 and 2 winners, with Dallas Carroll taking 3rd. On Sunday Anders again showed his mastery taking 1st, with James McLoughlin in 2nd and Dallas Carroll in 3rd. BSR sidebar: In preparation for the weekend, I searched YouTube for videos on the CCW configuration and joined Tom Dyer’s virtual track walk. There in his demo videos was a clip of three POC BSR racers each taking a very different line into and through Riverside yet meeting nose to tail at Bus Stop. A reminder that while there is the fastest line, being able to drive off line and defend in a race is an important skill.

When we run CCW should the kink after Riverside be called Stop Bus? Random thought just now. Distractions…squirrel moments…just part of the many things we manage when racing. Checkout the full results on the club’s website https://results.porscheclub.com/result The Time Trial group (both open passing and point-by) is growing too. The return to in car instruction has helped this group progress. While some drivers are happy to track their daily drivers, TT plays an important role for our club. It provides a prescriptive path for drivers to move into racing if their competitive muse needs to be fed. We’ve heard it many times that a POC Race License is highly respected. It is the structure of our driver development program, skills progression, and oversight which are the underpinnings of that respect. According to Dwain Dement, 70% of our current racers came up through our PDS and TT programs. They started out with a lovely, fast street car that they wanted to learn to drive better. They caught the bug. Became enthralled with the feeling of driving a car at speed and tumbled down the slippery slope to become racers. This is my story, I’m sure many of you share this narrative.

Seeking the Red Dot: Racers Clinic We had a huge class with 19 racer candidates (with 11 BSRs!!!), including another father and son team of Mickey and Riley Giacomazzi. Eleven candidates received their “half” dot and four received their full dot. Other participants did not have fully race prepped cars but benefitted from their participation. The weekend was filled with classroom instruction, on track practice, learning to coexist and what “racing room” means, Australian Pursuit, building the

racer mentality and mindset, safety, and understanding the importance of knowing who you are racing with. All of these components contribute to building the POC’s racing culture—we race with our friends, not a bunch of strangers we’ve never met. It sets us apart from other organizations and provides us with a framework to ensure safety, while still having a helluva a lot of fun.

Dwain led the clinic with help from Mike Monsalve, Duane Selby, and Martina Kwan. There is a lot of preparation that goes into making the clinic a success and to ensure that critical information is not just conveyed, but understood. It’s intense. There is so much to learn and to practice in a short period of time. Yet, surprisingly, by the end of the weekend, you will feel ready to race.

And race they did! The race on Sunday afternoon was exciting to watch.

The racer candidates left nothing on the field and from the lookout we watched them push hard. I always remember how cool it was that the seasoned racers stayed around to watch the Racer Clinic Race at the end of the weekend and a group was there to welcome the new recruits to racing. After all, these folks will be out there with us. Best to know who they are. Watch out Red and Orange Groups, more competition coming.

Mike Monsalve’s words at my final racer clinic have stayed with me: “Your reputation as a racer begins now. Check your ego at the door, have the right attitude, and the winning will come.”

For those of us who’ve been at this for a while, it is important to remember to provide support and encouragement to drivers and racers who are new, who are struggling to improve, or who feel stuck or frustrated with their lack of progress. We have all learned from each other. Someone’s generosity helped you get to where you are on your track journey.

As a rookie racer, I recall with clarity the time I spoke with John Momeyer about the problems I was experiencing at WSIR on T2. The car was stepping out. I didn’t feel comfortable rolling on more throttle. The pack was walking away from me. His question to me: “Is your sway bar connected?” My newbie reply: “I don’t know but will find out.” This led to a sway bar-ectomy, which led to a better handling car, which built confidence, which led to more speed and control. One quick answer from John made a huge difference for me. The point is this: we learn from each other. The generosity of the more experienced drivers and

their willingness to share their knowledge is what makes us all better and safer. So, don’t be timid about asking for help and advice. And to you who are being asked: Remember that the roles were once reversed and take those extra moments to encourage your fellow drivers.

It’s what this Club is all about.

Buttonwillow CCW 2022 did not disappoint. It was an incredible weekend. The reassuring normal routines embedded into our track weekends, the sensory feedback from the car, but more importantly the friendship and community that is “The” POC makes us who we are. As I sit on grid before qualifying or a race, I close my eyes, breathe deeply, and focus on the gratitude. We are all so fortunate to participate in this sport, to have our health, and to experience the satisfaction and joy of pushing ourselves and our machines to the limits.

Gratitude. Yes, that sums up the weekend for me.
