Dear Friends, On a very warm June 1st, our annual Commencement exercises were an opportunity for our faculty, leadership, and staff to reflect on an exceptional year and celebrate all that the Class of 2023 had accomplished over the past four years. As these young women and men move onto college and careers, I am confident that the values instilled during their time at Pope Francis Prep will translate into a capacity to make and be a difference in the service to others.

This fall we welcomed the Class of 2027. More prospective students are making Pope their first choice, recognizing we are one of the best values in private secondary education in the region. Our 115 freshmen hail from more than 30 cities and towns in Massachusetts and Connecticut and come from more than 40 different elementary and middle schools. As these students acclimate to campus, our Christian Leadership team has been instrumental in planning activities for our newest Cardinals to get to know one another. From orientation in August to the freshman retreat in September, our team of faculty, staff, and student leaders have worked hard to ensure the Class of 2027 feels welcome as valued members of our school community. As Pope Francis Prep continues to grow, innovate, and evolve, we do so mindful that our mission drives all that we do. Among the new faces and new coursework, this new school year opens with a new advisory program for all students. It is our belief that the advisory

program will be fundamental to student growth and success. Its primary purpose is to provide all students with trusted mentors for achieving academic, social, and personal success throughout their lives. This new initiative is mission-based and supports our efforts to help students grow spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. Further, this program will support our values of justice, peace, service, and mercy. Students benefit from having their academic and personal development guided by an adult mentor and advocate. This advisory program will organically strengthen the connectedness between staff and students, fostering a very personalized and more supportive school culture. We have made a commitment as an entire school that this initiative is valuable and important. Advisory groups are a blend of 9-10 students from all grades. The students will journey with the same advisor for their entire time at Pope. Another key component of the program is that all teachers and administrators have their own advisory group. It is our hope

that this advisory program further ensures that every student on campus is known, valued, and celebrated. There is so much to see and do on the Pope campus. Whether you were on campus today, last month, or it has been a while, I invite you to come and see us soon. Know that we keep our Pope families and friends in our prayers and I ask that you keep all of us in your prayers. Best,

REMEMBERING THE PAST, CELEBRATING THE FUTURE! HANA AHMED It is difficult to pick my favorite memory from my time at PFPS. However, one memory that sticks out the most to me is the time I spent during study hall with my friends. I took a couple of VHS (Virtual High School) classes my senior year, so accordingly, I had multiple study hall periods. My friends would always tease me that I only had one real class on “A” days, and they were jealous that I never had to move. Nonetheless, in each period after completing my work, my friends and I would have funny conversations and silly arguments. Sometimes, we would laugh until our stomachs hurt and the teachers would tell us to quiet down. In the end, these times turned out to be some of my favorite memories which I will cherish forever. I am currently majoring in biology and data science at Northeastern University. Taking Mr. Brodeur’s class my freshman year encouraged me to choose biology as one of my majors. As my classmates and I competed to pass his arduous tests, I discovered that it was one of my stronger subjects. Similarly, I chose data science because I loved AP Statistics with Mr. Nowakowski. Ultimately, all of my teachers at Pope provided me with the skills necessary to transition from high school to college. These include communication, responsibility, and time management. For that, I am extremely grateful. After receiving my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue my master’s degree and begin a career in the field of bioinformatics.

AJ HOLL My favorite moment from my time at PFPS was winning the Western Mass Class A basketball championship in my senior year. During my freshman season, our team only won 2 games. Seeing individual improvement year after year and realizing the chemistry that was growing within our team was really special. Winning that championship highlighted the work that everyone put in and our overall commitment to success. The student fanbase was incredibly enthusiastic during that playoff run and was a big factor in our accomplishment. I am currently studying economics at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. I am interested in possibly pursuing a career in real estate, and I look forward to taking advantage of the internships and employment opportunities available in Hartford. My PFPS education was fundamental in my acceptance to Trinity and has provided me with the skills and work ethic needed for success in college. Go Bantams!

THOMAS CAPRONI My favorite memory from my time at PFPS is definitely when I went to Mystic Aquarium for a field trip for my Cultivating Wisdom class during my senior year. It was super fun meditating

with the Beluga whales. My friends and I also had an awesome time exploring all the little shops nearby. When I first came to PFPS, I had absolutely no idea of what I wanted to study in college. I learned how much I loved science as I took six classes with Mr. Broduer and Mrs. Woltschlaeger, including AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and Honors Aquaculture. These classes inspired my choice of major as well as prepared me for the rigors of college. I am currently attending Tufts University where I am majoring in Chemical Engineering. Upon graduation, I hope to get a job in the pharmaceutical industry. MAEVE O’SULLIVAN My favorite memory from my time at PFPS was winning the first ever Pope Francis Girls Soccer Western Mass Championship in history. This was a core memory for me as the Pope Francis community came together to support our team by filling the stands to cheer us on. The crowd wore white for a ’white out’ theme, which started the tradition of wearing white to championship games. I am blessed to have been a part of the immense growth of the girls soccer program and all of athletics at Pope Francis during my high school years. Although I am undecided on what I want to pursue as my major, I feel confident in college thanks to the teachers at PFPS who have prepared me to succeed. As I am now a member of the track and field team at Holy Cross, I am grateful for Mr. Estabrook, my coach and teacher, who helped guide me to where I am today as a student-athlete.

JOE DIMICHELE On March 19, 2023, I was a part of the Pope Francis hockey team that made history by being the first team from Western Mass to bring home a hockey state championship title in

over 50 years. The energy from the crowd and the support from our school and people all over Western Massachusetts helped me create the best memory not only at Pope, but in my whole life. The feeling after winning the Massachusetts state championship is something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I currently attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute and I am studying Civil Engineering and playing baseball. During my time at WPI I plan to pursue civil engineering internships that I hope will increase my knowledge and lead me to a successful future.

TRACETTA CAUDLE A favorite memory of mine from Pope Francis is when the girls basketball team played against Easthampton at home. Pope and Easthampton were fighting for the conference's top spot and the Cardinals brought the energy. The stands were packed, our team played well, and we won! I’m studying Sports Management at Springfield College. After my undergrad, I hope to go to law school. One day, I hope to work for the Premier Lacrosse League or be a General Manager of a professional Sports Team, an Athletic Director of a collegiate team, or a Sports Event Manager.

to Keegan Sears ’24 who has been recognized for his outstanding achievement on the 2022 PSAT and has been named a NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP SEMIFINALIST! From more than 1.3 million juniors at 21,000 high schools who took this exam, Keegan is among a nationwide pool of Semifinalists that represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors. Keegan now becomes one of 16,000 students who will apply for status as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

Locally, Keegan is the only semifinalist within the City of Springfield and one of only two students to be recognized for this achievement from the 23 cities and towns in Hampden County.

May 3rd was DECISION DAY for the Class of 2023. This annual tradition is a fun day not only for the seniors but for their teachers, families, and students in grades 9-11 to witness the excitement surrounding college selection.

Tracetta Caudle ’23 received a surprise visit from Nikki Levine and Arlene Ramos-Ortiz of Springfield College with news that she was a winner of the JESSE L. PARKS SCHOLARSHIP - a full scholarship - to attend Springfield College. She is one of only two students to receive the scholarship this year.

Congratulations to the PFPS 2023 POET LAUREATE, Siobhan Walsh ’23 who had the opportunity to share her poem "The End of a Song" at commencement.

AC A D E M I C S Through our ACADEMIC PATHWAYS program, Elizabeth Hanechak ’25 shadowed Dr. Sallie Schneider at the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute breast cancer research laboratory, a part of Baystate Medical Center. She was able to sit in on a mouse surgery and a histology procedure studying dolphin reproductive organs, as well as view slides of various tissue samples using various microscopes. She also had a chance to discuss in-depth the numerous projects being worked on to further our understanding of breast cancer with the scientists there and was able to see how a research lab is run.

Bad hair day? Students in Mrs. Woltschlaeger’s Physics class experimented with a VAN DE GRAFF ELECTRICITY CONDUCTOR to learn more about electrostatics.

> Thank you to our students who displayed their work and those who performed at our EVENING OF THE ARTS. This event was an opportunity for parents, family, and friends to visit campus to witness the amazing talents of our students in the fine and performing arts.

For the first time, three Cardinals presented their STEAM PROJECTS at the NERD (New England Regional Developers) Summit on March 17 at UMASS Amherst.

Mrs. Slawiak’s AP Computer Science Principles class had fun on their first day by collaborating in teams to find a solution to the RED SOLO CUP CHALLENGE. They had to stack six cups in a pyramid without touching the cups. The teams received 4 pieces of string and a rubber band. Needless to say, their collaborative innovation kicked in.

> Seven Pope Francis Prep students competed at AIC’s MODEL CONGRESS, the longest running Model Congress of its kind. Students from several different schools came together to debate legislature proposed by the students themselves. This was our first year back at Model Congress after a several year hiatus and our students proposed 3 bills, with topics including death penalty abolition, conversion to the metric system, and ending animal testing for cosmetic products.

Rhythm was ringing through the rafters as the PFPS MUSIC DEPARTMENT presented their spring concert. Nearly sixty students performed, featuring all of our music classes: Band, Chorus, Guitar Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, and clubs: Choir, Jazz Band, Full Band/Orchestra, and Rock, Pop & More. Most music was chosen by students, and the selections spanned decades and continents.

The POPE FRANCIS PLAYERS' production of Annie was absolutely amazing. Congratulations to the cast, crew, and pit band. We are grateful to all the parents, students, faculty, staff, friends, family and community members that showed their support for this talented and hardworking group of Cardinals.

We had a terrific time celebrating the Class of 2023 during Senior Week. Some of the highlights from the week included the SENIOR AWARDS & PARENT RECOGNITION NIGHT, the Senior vs. Faculty wiffle ball game, the senior breakfast and the class trip to Sonny’s Place. The week ended with the Class of 2023 coming together for one last service project at Forest Park.

As part of his SERVICE PROJECT, Johnny Gosselin ’24 spent the past winter coaching the St. Thomas 6th grade CYO basketball team. Congratulations to the team on winning the league championship!

STUDENT GOVERNMENT members Hana Ahmed ’23 and Samantha Stortz ’23, delivered items to Shriners Children's Hospital along with a check for $600 raised through proceeds from our Valentine’s Day carnation sales.

Over the summer, Gabriella Fialho ’25 spent a day at FENWAY PARK volunteering with the MassMutual Foundation.

The District Attorney's YOUTH ADVISORY BOARD consists of local sophomore, junior and senior high school students who meet on a regular basis with the District Attorney's Office. The objective of the board is to address issues facing today's teens and research effective prevention strategies. Participants finished the year with a community breakfast in which all students shared insights into the work they did throughout the year. The PFPS Representatives for the 2022-2023 school year were Leana Vale ’23, Emma Caproni ’25, Mackenzie Lopes ’24, Robert McDonough ’24, Julia Dennis ’23, and Samuel Eskander ’24.

> Over the summer, Madison Koziol ’24 and Sam Eskander ’24 attended the Massachusetts GIRLS AND BOYS STATE programs. During the intense, weeklong program, participants spend time studying responsible citizenship, government, and leadership.

KEY CLUB members arranged and donated Easter baskets to a local Square One program as a way to celebrate the Easter season and give back to the community. In the baskets were an array of coloring books, sweets, socks, Easter eggs, and “clubby” bears to enjoy.

Beginning in their freshman year and culminating in senior year, our Cardinals have numerous opportunities to grow their leadership skills, practice their faith, and serve our community. In the spring of junior year, students can apply to be part of the Christian Leadership program for their final year at Pope Francis Prep. After applying, a team of administrators and faculty work together to interview and select this incredibly important group of Cardinals, then charged with leading many spiritual activities for the entire school. Students have many reasons for wanting to be a part of the Christian Leadership team. Current Christian Leader, Stephanie Cesar ’24 shares “I decided to apply for Christian Leadership because of the class's ability to instill positivity around the school. As Christian Leaders, we are expected to show God's love through our actions and words. I found joy in the idea of having the opportunity to actively practice my faith in school and inspire others to do God's work. As someone who loves to make people feel welcome, I found that Christian leadership was the best way to achieve that, as we are involved in so

many of our schools' events. Through my participation in this class, I find that I am able to grow in my relationship with God, through Mass, prayers, retreats, and more; and encourage others around the school to grow faithfully as well. I am able to help build a community where kindness and positivity are planted due to God's love and make school a pleasing environment for all students.” Leading this incredible group of students for the past 6 years is Mr. John Anziano. "It is an amazing experience to have witnessed many young students transform into the leaders of tomorrow. The Christian Leadership class serves to help advance the school's mission. Students learn and play an active role in planning liturgies, prayer services, school-wide community service projects, and grade level retreats. Students are educated on how to become leaders within the school, church and global community." says Mr. Anziano. Reflecting on her time as a Christian

Leadership student, Alex Watroba ’23 shares, “I had the opportunity to represent Pope Francis Prep as a Christian Leader, and I could not be more thankful. I felt inspired to make a difference and be a leader within our community. I was able to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships with my classmates and with God. Knowing that others were looking at me as a Christ-like leader made me consider my actions more closely and incorporate Christ into every aspect of my life.”

> The white CATHOLIC SCHOOL CORD was presented to 38 members of the Class of 2023 who attended Catholic School from grades K-12. The schools represented included 8 local Catholic Schools: Blessed Sacrament, St. John the Baptist, St. Joan of Arc, St. Martha’s, St. Mary’s Academy, St. Michael’s Academy, St. Stanislaus, and St. Thomas.

Congratulations to our Cardinals who received the Gifts of the Holy Spirit during their CONFIRMATION at St. Thomas in West Springfield. May the power of the Holy Spirit guide them as they become strong Disciples of Christ.

> Our forty-six Latin students gathered in the chapel with our chaplain, Fr. Jon, along with nine choristers from the music department to celebrate the Risen Christ at the school’s annual LATIN MASS. The students had learned all of the traditional Gregorian chants of the mass, and the choir offered a lovely and moving rendition of the traditional round, “Dona nobis pacem.”

> Christian Leadership students continuously work with Mr. Anziano and Fr. Jon as they prepare and grow in their roles as SPIRITUAL LEADERS of our school community. The class met in our chapel with Fr. Jon to go over Mass procedures including the Reception of Holy Communion.

On Holy Wednesday our community gathered for a prayerful reenactment of the STATIONS OF THE CROSS. Our Christian Leadership team served as actors for the stations and provided thoughtful modern scenes to depict the lessons found in each of the stations.

We were blessed to celebrate our seniors and their families at BACCALAUREATE MASS at St. Michael's Cathedral. Thank you to Mr. Anziano, our Christian Leadership team, our celebrant and chaplain Father Jon, our faculty and staff, and the choir for a beautiful Mass for the Class of 2023.

We began the 2023-2024 school year with a special PRAYER SERVICE. This was the first time our school community gathered together and it was wonderful to see the theatre bursting at the seams with new and returning students.

Ben Hamel ’23, Adrianna Gomes ’24, Hannah Fanelli ’25, Kaylie Moran ’23, Alex Watroba ’23, Ben Lacroix ’23, Jack Day ’26 and Tim Day ’24 joined Fr. Jon for the CHALICE OF SALVATION Mass that aired on Sunday, April 30. Students provided music, helped with the readings and brought up the gifts. The Mass was held on Good Shepherd Sunday, also known as the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Fr. Jon spoke about the need for more priests and religious to serve the Church and God's people and for young people not to be afraid to follow Jesus in a religious vocation.

The 2022-2023 school year led to many incredible FIRSTS for our sports teams. The momentum continued into the spring with our Boys Lacrosse team winning its first Western Mass title. We look forward to an action-packed 2023-2024 school year. ROLL POPE!

Congratulations to BOYS LACROSSE on winning 14-6 over Wahconah in the Class B Western Mass championship game! SE At the State Track and Field Championship, BRENNA SEARS ’23 finished 1st in the mile, running a 5:13 and qualifying for the Meet of Champions. Congratulations to LILY FROST ’25 who shot a 77 at the MIAA Girls Golf Sectionals and qualified for the state tournament. On June 4, 2023 Neutral Zone presented JOSH IBY ’23 with the highly coveted Mr. Hockey 2023 Award. The Cardinal BASEBALL PROGRAM received the 2023 Francis G. Keough Sportsmanship Award at the Western Mass Baseball Umpire Association annual banquet. BOYS LACROSSE coach Bob McGoldrick received the US Lacrosse Regional Award for Coach of the Year after leading the Cardinals to a 16-4 overall record in 2023 and winning the program’s first Western Massachusetts title. On May 9, 2023 KAITLYN ONDRICK ’24 scored her 100th career lacrosse point. RICHARD ROY ’23 received the US Lacrosse Regional Academic All-American Award. CONGRATULATIONS to the 16 members of the Class of 2023 who will be continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Way to go, Cardinals!

Spring Sports BASEBALL finished the season 19-9-1 with a +92 run differential. The Cardinals were Class A Western Mass finalists and earned the #7 seed in the MIAA State tournament before falling to Reading. The team was led by Brady Debarge ’23 (ECSU Baseball Commit), Joe Dimichele (WPI Commit), and Bobby Trigilio (LeMoyne Commit). Brady Debarge, Ryan O’Leary ’23, Jake Petrin ’24, and Connor Niemec ’24 earned both All-Western Mass and All-League Honors. Nick Burns ’25, Ryan Garvey ’25, Ryan Vedovelli ’25 earned All-Western Mass honors. Additionally, the program fielded two JV teams. JV A finished the season with a 15-7 record with a +72 run differential. JV B finished the season with a 5-6 record and a +14 run differential. The Cardinals will return 40 players to the program in 2024, plus a large group of 19 talented newcomers. SOFTBALL had a terrific season and finished with a record of 14-4. The team was led by Samantha Stortz ’23 who finished her Cardinal career with 300 strikeouts after pitching for only two years along with a .400 batting average. The team made their first appearance in the Western Mass Class B tournament and enjoyed a memorable experience. Taylor Moreau ’25, Camryn Rogowski ’25, and Samantha Stortz earned All-League and All-Western Mass honors. With a senior laden team, the 2023 season brought the BOYS LACROSSE program many firsts. The team finished with a 16-4 record, won its first Western Mass championship, and ended the season ranked 8th in division 3. Richard Roy ’23 received the US Lacrosse Regional Academic

All-American Award and coach Bob McGoldrick received the US Lacrosse Regional Award for Coach of the Year. All-League and All-Western Mass honors were earned by Daniel Bezrutchenko ’23, Matthew Davis ’25, Ryan Gokey ’24, Richard Roy ’23, and Gage Sperlonga ’23. All-Western Mass honors were also earned by Jake Jarrell ’24, Connor Ondrick ’23, and Michael Wolanski ’23. GIRLS LACROSSE finished the season with an 8-8 record. The team was Class C Western Mass finalists. All-League and All-Western Mass honors were earned by Keira Fitzgerald ’24, Audrey Mason ’23, and Kaitlyn Ondrick ’24. The young team lost only 2 seniors and looks forward to a terrific 2024 season. BOYS TENNIS finished the season with a 3-8 record. Joseph Dewey ’24, AJ Goncalves ’24, and John Sitnik ’25 earned All-League honors. Team awards included Team MVPs John Sitnik and Joseph Dewey (Doubles Team), Coaches Award winners AJ Goncalves and Mackenzie Lopes ’24 and Most Improved award winner Gabe LeMaire ’24. The team looks forward to a great season this spring. GIRLS TENNIS had another terrific season. The team finished with a 13-4 record and were named Pioneer League Champs. The team advanced to the semifinals of the Western Mass tournament and to the round of 16 of the Class C State Tournament. All-League honors were earned by Emma Cassell ’23, Paige Cook ’23, Brooke Eastman ’24, Katelyn Horky ’23, Olivia Puppolo ’23, Leana Vale ’23, and Alex Watroba ’23. All-Western Mass honors were received by Katelyn Horky, Olivia Puppolo, Leana Vale, and Alex Watroba.

BOYS TRACK finished the season with a 3-3 record. The 4x4 team of Thomas Ford ’23, Ethan Anderson ’24, Matthew Streck ’26, and Wesley Smith ’24 competed in the 4x400 relay at the State Championships. All-League honors were earned by Wesley Smith and Matthew Streck. Team awards included MVP winner Riley Szenda ’23, Rookies of the Year Matthew Streck and Dezmon Davis ’26. GIRLS TRACK finished the season with a 3-3 record. The team had tremendous results at the Western Mass Championship meet: Maeve O’Sullivan ’23, Stephanie Cesar ’24, Norah Walsh ’24, and Isabella Meadows ’24 won the 4x100 meter relay. The team of Stephanie Cesar, Maeve O’Sullivan, Norah Walsh, and Brenna Sears ’23 won the 4x400 meter relay. Brenna Sears won the mile and repeated as 800 meter champion. Maeve O’Sullivan repeated as the 400 meter champion. The team finished second in its division to Southwick but defeated Southwick at the Western Mass Championship, peaking at the right time and being led by great senior leadership and performances. The Sprint Medley team of Norah Walsh, Brenna Sears, Maeve O’Sullivan, and Stephanie Cesar broke the school record in the sprint medley and won the Steele Relay Championship in the event. Norah Walsh, Stephanie Cesar, Ajade Marsh ’24, Maeve Turmel ’26, Maeve O’Sullivan, Brenna Sears, and Jessica Kenyon ’23 were named to the All-League team for the Pioneer South League. Maeve O’Sullivan, Jessica Kenyon and Brenna Sears were named to first team All-Western Mass and have all gone on to compete in college at the division 1 level.

No longer a secret in Western Mass. At Pope Francis Prep, we continue to grow in more ways than one! This school year we welcomed 115 Cardinals to the Class of 2027 and 14 additional transfer students.

Our newest Cardinals come from 48 different schools and 32 communities in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

In all, we have 425 Cardinals this year, representing enrollment growth of 100 students over the past six years.

HERE ARE A JUST A FEW OF THE EXCITING CHANGES WE HAVE MADE TO ACCOMMODATE OUR GROWING NEST: NEW COURSES The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program is an opportunity for students to pursue college-level study in high school. This year we have added AP Psychology to our academic program and have 50 students enrolled in the class. We are also excited to add 2 additional courses this year: Abnormal Psychology and Fitness for Life.

MORE PARKING Every spring brings a rush of new drivers to PFPS and finding a parking spot can be difficult. To accommodate, we’ve added new parking spaces between the gym and the turf field, installed a speed bump near the baseball field, and re-striped all crosswalks and parking spaces.

POPE FRANCIS PREPARATORY SCHOOL

NEW CLASSROOMS 4 new classrooms have been built and are being used for the first time this semester. The new classrooms are located on the backside of campus and are accessible from the hallway on the first floor of the existing building. These large and bright new classrooms are furnished with advanced touchscreen teaching technology and the same desks, furnishings, and equipment found in all other classrooms.

MUSIC ROOM With the addition of the 4 new classrooms, we have been able to transform and return “room 150” to its original intention of a full time music room. Mrs. Campbell, our band and choir director, and her talented students are thrilled to have this dedicated space to call home!

We set records with over $540,000 raised for the Cardinal Fund and a phenomenal $1,630,925 raised in total giving. We were fortunate to have increased Cardinal Fund giving efforts by 23% and partnered with over 1,130 benefactors who made 1,530 gifts to support our mission.Our endowment portfolio, which includes more than 50 funds, surpassed $15,000,000, providing our school with over $600,000 in annual operational support and scholarships.Your annual generosity and this incredible investment portfolio provides us with the foundation to make decisions that benefit our students today and into the future. Pope Francis Prep continues in its strengths because of the support and leadership of many.
