Dear Friends, I feel so honored to belong to the Pope Francis Prep community. The engagement of our students, their parents, and our faculty and staff, coupled with the faithful support from our alumni, grandparents, and friends has been incredible this year!
Individuals, businesses, and households have weathered the storm of challenges over these past few years. While our school is no different, we knew that beyond every challenge, opportunities would present. With guidance from one another, we have gained clarity and direction through a variety of shared opportunities as Pope Francis Prep. The greatest of these opportunities is the incorporation of faith into our learning environment. At Pope, we know who we are and we know what we value. Rooted in our Catholic faith, our community values justice, peace, service, and mercy. Together, these values guide our conversations and inform our decisions today and tomorrow. Springtime in New England signifies renewal and new life. From eighth graders selecting Pope as their high
school of choice, to our seniors wrapping up their four years with us and preparing for the transition to college, to the changes and personal growth we witness among our students, it is inspirational to reflect on the opportunities and the journey that has brought us to this point in the year. In this issue of the Cardinal, we asked some of our students, faculty, and parents to tell us “why” and what they appreciate about the many opportunities at Pope. It only seems fitting that I too share “why” I love my role at Pope. My “why” is the ability to live out a mission and vision that helps our students find their purpose, grow in their faith, and prepares them to become tomorrow’s leaders. Our world and its future depends on our graduates to contribute to society as critical thinkers, creators, innovators, and
problem solvers. For me, witnessing the transition and formation of our young women and men over these four years is incredibly rewarding and truly inspiring. Sincerely,

BEGINNING IN THE FALL OF 2020 and continuing today, we have asked current students to share what Pope Francis Prep means to them. We asked them WHY they chose to attend Pope Francis Prep and we learned about the many personal reasons that they love the school.
WHY Pope Francis Prep SOPHIA ROSELLI, CLASS OF 2022
Long before I entered middle school, I had my sights on attending Pope Francis for high school. My sister, Cristina Roselli ’17, attended Holyoke Catholic and eventually, Pope Francis. I watched her flourish academically, athletically, and socially. Her excellent high school experience made my family’s decision to send me to Pope Francis indisputable. Although I was hesitant to leave my friends from middle school, within a few hours of freshman orientation, I made so many new friends and felt the warmth of the Pope Francis community. As a senior now, I can proudly say that I still feel the warmth and support I felt on freshman orientation day. The inclusive climate at Pope Francis cultivates confidence and instills kindness in its students. Without a doubt, it is truly “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”. My favorite part about being a student at Pope Francis is the abundance of opportunity. I believe that there is something for everyone here. In large public schools it can be difficult to find your “niche” and be involved in

your school community. At Pope Francis, opportunities are readily available and the support is incredible. I have been so blessed to have many great mentors during the past few years. I know for certain that when my four years at Pope Francis come to a close I will be prepared to take on whatever challenges come my way!
We decided to dig a little deeper. We interviewed students, faculty, and alumni, inquiring about their personal experiences to garner a sense of the WHY? We asked them to reflect on… > WHY do I like being a Cardinal? > WHY do I feel prepared for college? > WHY do I give back to Pope Francis Prep? > WHY do I stay committed to teaching and making a difference at Pope Francis Prep? > WHY did I transfer to Pope? > WHY is my faith important? > WHY am I committed to service and helping my community? > And, WHY is it important for the legacy to continue?
WHY I like being a Cardinal TANDY BROWNELL, CLASS OF 2022
When I think of why I like being a Cardinal, it can be summed up into one word: community. Pope Francis has such a vast community of students who all have different interests and ways of thinking, but all these interests and ideals come together when people participate with each other in extracurricular activities. As someone who is a part of a couple of sports teams and clubs, this has allowed me to make many new friends who I might not have known in the classroom and has opened my eyes to new ways of thinking. As for the students in the classroom, everyone in our community wants to learn and values their education which pushes me to do my best. The community overall drives me to be the best person I can be and that is why I enjoy being a Cardinal.
WHY I feel prepared for college MALCOLM MAHONEY, CLASS OF 2022
If you asked me what I wanted to do with my life in eighth grade, I would have been stumped. However, through the past four years, I have been able to discover my passions and realize my true calling in life. Not only do I feel prepared with my academic abilities, but I feel that through my time at Pope Francis I have been able to greatly improve my interpersonal skills. I am so excited for my future opportunities which would not have been possible without the guidance of the faculty at Pope Francis. From the Pathways Program to the plethora of extracurricular
activities, I have been given countless opportunities to not only discover what I am passionate about but to learn from and work with others. I owe so much of my success to simply being in this environment and I feel that Pope has prepared me well for my freshman year at Dartmouth College in the fall.

I am committed to teaching at Pope Francis Preparatory School because I believe in our mission and in our students. Pope Francis Prep offers many opportunities for both students and faculty to grow as learners, and provides many outlets for faculty to connect with students outside of the classroom. Additionally, teachers are encouraged to use their unique talents and are able to contribute to the curriculum. I enjoy watching students grow from year to year, as they develop into responsible and goal-driven young adults.

WHY I choose to support the Cardinal Fund MR. DARRYL GEOFFREY, DIRECTOR OF TECHNOLOGY
I give to Pope Francis for several reasons. Because I am a product of K-12 Catholic schooling, I believe I owe all that I have achieved to the foundational education I received in Catholic schools. Because my wife Carin and I are alumni of one of Pope's legacy schools—Holyoke Catholic. As alumni of that school, which was itself, the result of a merger in 1963, I believe we should follow the model of many people I have met who were themselves alumni of those original schools (Rosary, St. Jerome's, Sacred Heart and Precious Blood) who continued to support the newly formed Holyoke Catholic after that merger in the 1960s. Because we are parents of a daughter who graduated from Catholic schools (and went on to become a Catholic school teacher), I continue to see the value of a Catholic school education. Because we are parents of another child, currently in Catholic middle school, I give to Pope Francis so that he will have a strong Catholic high school to attend. Because I am an employee of Pope Francis Prep, I choose to give because I believe in its mission and want to support it. But beyond all these reasons, I give because it is my hope that my donation will help to make scholarships and financial aid available so that ANY student who wants a Catholic education can receive one, even if their family does not have the means to make it happen. That's why I give.
WHY I transferred to PFPS AUDREY MASON, CLASS OF 2023
During my freshman and half of my sophomore year I attended a public school. I had made friends and was doing well in my classes but everything changed when COVID hit in the spring of 2020. Finishing my freshman year online was difficult for me, but having to start my sophomore year online with no finish line in sight seemed impossible. I had

a difficult time learning and maintaining connections with the friends I had made. My brother was a senior at Pope Francis during my sophomore year and he loved everything about the school. He explained to me that his teachers were always willing to provide him with extra support, he had made friendships that he knew he would have for the rest of his life, and most importantly he had been building a relationship with God. My family and I made the decision to transfer to Pope Francis halfway through my sophomore year. The Pope Francis Prep community has become a second home to me. I am grateful that we made this decision because of the opportunities, experiences, and my growing relationship with God, all of which Pope Francis Prep has provided me with.
WHY my faith is important LEAH KENNY, CLASS OF 2022
Over the past 4 years at Pope Francis, my faith has grown more than I could have imagined. Going into Pope, I felt that I knew the basics of my faith. However, it was during my experience here, specifically in my freshman theology class, that I began to understand my faith on a deeper level. Shortly after starting my freshman year, I knew I wanted to continue growing my relationship with
God. Luckily, Pope Francis provided me with guidance and countless opportunities to grow my faith. From celebrating school-wide Mass, to becoming a Eucharistic Minister, to participating in morning and afternoon prayer and more, Pope Francis has allowed me to not just learn about my faith, but also practice and live my faith. Being able to grow my faith in such a welcoming and supportive school community has been life-changing. One of my favorite experiences has been serving as a member of the Christian Leadership Team. Through this, I am able to share my faith with other people in the school community and plan events such as Masses and retreats alongside some of my best friends! As I look towards the future, I know that faith will continue to be a central part of my life, and I am so thankful that Pope Francis has instilled in me its importance and value.

WHY I am committed to community service JOSEPH DEWEY, CLASS OF 2024
It is good for each person to consider how the community has helped them grow and to give back in some way. For my two main service projects, I chose to volunteer time at my church and for veterans of U.S. military service. I am an altar server at my church because I have grown up in that faith community. I helped lead a pallet service project during this year’s all-school service day. The project involved repairing, painting, and upcycling old wood pallets. The pallets were then painted with patriotic themes and messages and gifted to local veterans. This was a small gesture of gratitude for veterans given the many sacrifices they have made so that we can all live with freedom in our country.
Kathleen Gourde graduated from Cathedral High School in 1987, and her husband Robert Gourde graduated from Holyoke Catholic High School in 1977. When it was announced that the two legacy schools would merge to create Pope Francis Preparatory School, the future of their four children’s education became an obvious choice. Elizabeth, their eldest and only daughter, graduated from Pope Francis in 2019, and their son Robert graduated last year, in 2021. Matthew Gourde is currently a junior at Pope Francis. Raymond, the youngest of the family, is only in the sixth grade, but he recently wrote in an essay that he, too, hopes to attend Pope Francis “like his older siblings.” This is because, as each sibling has looked to those before them, they have watched their brother or sister thrive on and off the grounds of that campus. The merging of Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic was an act of preservation, and it ensured the development of even more well-rounded students. The spirit of academic excellence, community service, and faith has lived on from the legacy schools and continues to thrive today at Pope Francis Prep. However, make no mistake; this is not the “new Cathedral,” or “new Holyoke Catholic” that Mr. and Mrs. Gourde once attended—it is something stronger, brighter, and all that its predecessors wished it to be.

WELCOME! IN SEPTEMBER 2021 we welcomed many new faces: freshmen, transfer students, and several new faculty and staff members. A warm welcome to all who have joined the Pope Francis Prep family!
MS. CARRIE AL-REKABY
has been teaching Spanish for the past 15 years, including teaching at Gateway Regional High School, Palmer High School and Westfield High School. She also served as a Graduate Assistant in the Spanish department at UMASS-Amherst, where she received a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Hispanic Linguistics. In addition, she holds a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from The University of Phoenix. In her spare time she enjoys playing pool with her fiance, taking trips with her three daughters and doing all sorts of arts and crafts (she can even make balloon animals!) and playing with her german shepherd, Juno. She loves being a Spanish teacher and sharing her knowledge and passion for the language and culture with her students. Her favorite thing about teaching at PFPS is the amazing students! She feels they are such a joy to teach and always participate in class activities! Carrie also appreciates all of her knowledgeable and kind coworkers that have accepted her with open arms. She believes Pope is an amazingly unique community and she feels grateful and blessed to be able to call it home. MR. TIMOTHY ALLERTON
is originally from western New York, and has taught science for the past 34 years. He holds a BS in Natural Science from

SUNY Geneseo, where he also played on the men's soccer team. He holds a MEd from SUNY Geneseo as well. He has taught science to students in grades 1-12 over the length of his career. During the last 18 years Mr. Allerton was teaching at Kingswood Oxford School in West Hartford, CT, where he taught middle school science for 4 years and Earth and Environmental Science for 14 years, as well as Robotics, Forensic Science, and AP Environmental science. His role this year at PFPS is teaching Biology and he looks forward to adding AP Environmental Science next year. Tim and his wife live in Suffield, CT and have two adult daughters. He enjoyed his time coaching soccer for the past 33 years (mostly girls) and girls lacrosse for 18 years. He loves and participates in outdoor activities year round. Hiking, camping, snowshoeing, skiing ...etc. and especially enjoys his time spent in the woods with his two rescue labs. He is very excited to begin a new chapter in his teaching life at PFPS. MRS. CHRISTINA BRACCI
joins PFPS working as the Administrative Assistant in the guidance office. She holds a BA in elementary education from Westfield State
University and spent 18 years teaching middle school math for the Springfield Diocese. She also has worked extensively in internet-based sales and customer service. When the opportunity to transition back into a Catholic school setting was presented, she jumped at the chance. Christina enjoys being in a Catholic school as she finds it very fulfilling, especially experiencing Mass as a community and participating in community service projects. She believes being the Administrative Assistant in guidance has given her a great perspective into the dedication of the students, working towards their post high school goals, as well as seeing the progress they are making in their academic endeavors. It opens up a different side of education that she had not experienced as a classroom teacher. Christina also enjoys playing golf, taking motorcycle trips with her husband and listening to live music whenever possible. Musically inclined herself, she has played guitar since childhood, and also sings for family weddings and events. She and her husband have two adult children, Seth and Aria. MR. MATTHEW HAGERTY
comes to PFPS as a new Theology teacher with a host of background experience. He worked at St. Thomas the Apostle School teaching religion in middle school, was the building substitute at Holyoke High School, a paraprofessional for The Hampden County Charter School of Science and also worked at Meadowbrook School in East Longmeadow. He is completing his Master’s Degree from Providence College. Matt also served for 10 years as an athletic trainer for people with special needs. Matt is a self described avid Celtics fan, and can often

be found playing pickup basketball and coaching cross country and track for PFPS. In addition to sports, Matt leads a prayer group, the Legion of Mary, at Holy Name Church. He is thrilled to be working at Pope and believes that his education and work background has led him to his current position. He values the family atmosphere at the school, along with the welcoming and supportive staff. He is lifted up by his students as he discovers their deep faith, and their commitment to grow closer to God. MR. WILLIAM MOORE
is originally from Wilmington DE, and received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in mathematics from American University in Washington D.C. After moving out west, he taught at Pima Community College in Arizona and the College of Marin in California. Recently he and his wife Laura returned to live in Massachusetts. They have two young sons, Will and Wyatt. When not teaching, Bill enjoys video games and board games. He likes teaching at PFPS because of all of the warm and friendly people, including both staff and students. MR. SCOTT O’NEILL
joins the PFPS team as Dean of Students and Social Studies teacher. Scott recognizes the value of developing young men and women so they can take the lead in shaping our future. Scott is a US Army Veteran, serving as a Military Police platoon leader. After Military service he continued public service with the Connecticut Department of Corrections beginning as an officer and retiring as counsel and auditor for the Director of Offender Classification. Scott earned his
Juris Doctor from Western New England University School of Law in 2003 and has served his community, state and nation in several areas of public service over the last 30 years. His commitment to the spirit of community service led him and his family to travel to southwestern Kentucky in late December to aid victims of the tornado outbreak that happened earlier in the month. Outside of school, Scott enjoys a variety of hobbies including fencing, historical reenactment as a living historian, gardening and hanging out with his wife Michele, two sons Connor and Aidan and their two very special dogs, Aria and Gwen. MR. RICHARD SILBEREIS
has joined PFPS as a Latin teacher. He holds academic degrees in a variety of disciplines: a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy from the Athenaeum of Ohio, a Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ Performance from the College-Conservatory of Music (University of Cincinnati), and a Masters Degree in Divinity from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (in Berkeley, CA). In addition to his work as Latin teacher at Pope Francis, he is the pastoral musician at Saint Matthew Lutheran Church in Avon, CT. He has served various schools and churches in Ohio, California, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, as a teacher, pastor, social worker, and musician. Mr. Silbereis is devoted to the study of Latin and throughout the four year curriculum aims to invite students to explore and compare various aspects of ancient Roman and modern American culture chiefly through the lens of the cardinal virtues of wisdom and justice. Mr. Silbereis lives with his wife Elaine, who has a thriving piano teaching studio in West Hartford. They have two adult children:
John, a neuroscientist in the Boston area; and Katie, a high school English and Special Education teacher in New York City. They are the adoring ”Nonna” and “Pampa” to four grandchildren. MRS. SHARON SMITH
joined our PFPS staff as the Business Officer who oversees student accounts, registration, tuition billing, invoicing, payments, financial aid and purchasing. Previously Sharon worked for nine years in academia as an Administrative Assistant to the Dean at Western New England University. Before this, she worked as a paralegal. When not helping to make the business office at Pope run smoothly, she enjoys spending time with her family and grandchildren, as well as traveling, boating, reading and shopping. MRS. TARA SPENCE
currently teaches geometry and statistics at PFPS. Originally from North Carolina, Mrs. Spence taught high school mathematics in North Carolina, Texas, and Iowa before moving to Massachusetts in 2020. She earned her BS in mathematics from Centre College in Danville, KY and her MS in mathematics from UNC– Chapel Hill. She also completed her certification for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in 2012. She lives in East Longmeadow with her husband (who is the pastor of Somers Congregational UCC), two daughters, and three cats. Outside of school, Mrs. Spence enjoys baking, gardening, and traveling. Fun fact—she has lived in 8 states and traveled to 42 of them!

ACADEMICS IN ACTION
After studying biomolecules and what they do in living things, Mr. Allerton's students dove into the food and energy connection unit. Students participated in a CALORIMETRY LAB by burning Lays potato chips and baked potato chips to see which releases the most heat energy, which is connected to the calories each type has. They learned that calories equate to energy and available building blocks for the growth and repair of tissues.
ACADEMIC RIGOR is frequently cited as one of the top reasons why students and families choose Pope Francis Prep. Our Celebration of Scholars is a perfect example of our students challenging themselves with honors and AP coursework and thriving in our academic program. The successes of these students are a reflection of the genuine partnership between our talented teachers, counselors, and parents. Students at this year’s ceremony were honored for outstanding performance on AP Exams, math and English PSAT scores over 550, 600, and 700, SAT scores in math and English over 600, 700, and even 2 perfect 800 math scores! We also celebrated freshmen on the first honor roll, grades 10-12 with consecutive terms on the first honor roll, acknowledgement of the top 10 students by class and inductees into the National Latin Honor Society.

GUILTY? Students in Ms. Mikhaylichenko's English class participated in a mock trial based on their reading of Franz Kafka's classic novella "The Metamorphosis." Student prosecutors attempted to prove the guilt of several characters, while the defense team was tasked with defending those characters based on evidence from the book. The mock trial also included witnesses, a bailiff, judge, and jury.
Our biggest ROLLER > COASTERS yet! This year, Mr. Salloum’s Elements of Design students were challenged to make the largest roller coaster to date and succeeded!

Congratulations to Elizabeth Hanechak ’25 on her success at the Region 1 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR! Elizabeth's project titled, "Could Dietary Supplements Solve the Plastic Problem?" earned her 3 different recognitions including 2nd place overall! Thank you to Dr. Jennifer Hanselman P’25, Biology Professor at Westfield State University, for presenting Elizabeth with her certificates, trophy, monetary awards and medals. Way to go, Eli!

Thanks to Mrs. Perreault and our PATHWAYS PROGRAM, Mihir Gogri ’22 was recently able to shadow at WWLP. He had the opportunity to spend the day with Anna Giza and her creative team. He toured the studio and also helped write a promo for the 6 o'clock news. Mihir had a great time and was grateful for the opportunity!
Congratulations to Alexander Adams ’24, Aiden McBee ’24, and Marco Vital ’24 who were awarded the Exceptional Projects Award in a ROBLOX CONTEST. They competed against 63 teams and individuals who entered the contest and 6 teams were selected for the final round. The judges awarded the Pope team second place.
> As a culmination to their > unit studying Sustainable Communities and Lifestyles, a group of students from Mr. Brodeur's ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE class took a field trip to New York City in November to study the structure, art, and architecture of the Highline. An abandoned, elevated railway that supplied the meat-packing companies in the city was transformed into an elevated pedestrian park that is a green showcase for walking and visual and performing arts.
Mr. Salloum's > Principles of Design students carefully CONSTRUCTED BRIDGES and tested their creations with weight. To our amazement, the strongest bridge was able to hold 387 pounds!

MALCOLM MAHONEY ’22 was the recipient of the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. The scholarship is open to participants of Boys and Girls State. There are three levels of winners: regional, national semi-finalist, and national finalists. Malcolm is a national finalist and was awarded a $10,000 scholarship. For his tier, the scholarship is awarded to one boy and one girl from each region of the US (10 recipients in total).

A slave, Geta, has run away and hidden in the branches of a tree. The oversees has led a band of slaves and dogs to ferret him out. Davus, the overseer, is commanding him to climb down from his hiding place!
> Students in the art > department and art club collaborated on a "PRAY FOR PEACE" installation to acknowledge the war and suffering that is taking place in Ukraine. Students created ceramic mandalas, origami lotus flowers, and felted prayers to convey feelings of unity, love, hope, and faith. Luna Pham ’23 created a stunning acrylic on canvas portrait of Mother Theresa praying.
Congratulations to MEGAN SMITH ’22 for not only earning a spot in the Massachusetts Western District Festival Chorus (with All State recommendation for the third year in a row) but also for being selected, by audition, to sing at the National level! Megan was chosen as a member of the Chamber Choir for the OAKE (Organization of Kodaly Educators) National Conference.
AP Bio students in Mrs. Perez’s class investigated the conditions that influence DNA STRUCTURE and its transition from a double helix to a single strand, and vice versa. Students tested conditions such as temperature, pH, and tried to determine the concentration of DNA within an unknown sample. The skills required for a successful lab included micropipetting, using a heat block PCR machine, and fluorescence detection techniques. Students saw the thermodynamic differences between base pairing, hydrogen bond stability in DNA, determined a melting point and annealing temperature for DNA strands using the fluorescent dye that would bind to the double helix but not the single stranded DNA. They each assembled a p51 viewer to see the fluorescence while testing these various conditions, analyzed the data, and drew conclusions.

IN THOSE NERVOUS MOMENTS just before the curtains rise, everyone in the production—cast and crew alike—feels a surge of adrenaline. This occurs before the beginning of each show, however, in the winter of 2021 those feelings were intensified. The COVID pandemic had abruptly shut down production of The Sound of Music in the spring of 2020 and NOW, after almost two years it was finally time to open the curtains and shine once more.
Live theater made its triumphant return on December 2, 2021 with the production of The Plot, Like Gravy, Thickens. Senior Devin Berthiaume shares “Theater has been one of the best aspects of my high school experience, so of course it was devastating to be unable to perform The Sound of Music, and miss out on theater throughout my entire junior year. I was beyond thrilled to find out we would be able to perform once again. I think being part of our production of The Plot, Like Gravy,Thickens might end up being my favorite high school memory. I was genuinely looking forward to going to school, having rehearsal every day, and sharing the experience with my friends. Being on stage was something I

missed so much, and I really enjoyed this play, so it was very rewarding and relieving to finally be able to perform live and in person again.” We are grateful to be able to showcase the many talents of our students through the performing arts program at PFPS. Here, our students have the opportunity to explore their talents in a supportive, family-like atmosphere, Devin explains, “spending so many hours with my friends every day after school, and working on something we're all passionate about has brought us so close together. I also admire how involved the students are in every aspect of our plays; students are in charge of music production, hair and makeup,
set design and construction, costumes, and more. The drama club values the students and puts their talents to good use, and I'm so glad I've been able to be a part of that experience.” The Pope Francis Players just wrapped up their second production of the school year, titled Emma! A Pop Musical. The director of our theater program, Mr. John Anziano, shares “We were blessed to have three performances with packed houses, something we have not seen in many years. I felt this show truly brought our community together for three nights of fun and laughter. Audiences were smiling and singing as they left each night. Some even came back for a second or third show!”

EVERYTHING'S BETTER TOGETHER! THE FALL OF 2021 brought the return of in-person events. Since then, our community has embraced any opportunity to get involved. As a result, events and service projects have been bigger and better than ever before. Post-pandemic, we have learned to appreciate and value the opportunities we have to spend time together, to give back to our community, and to cheer for one another. Today, our community is stronger and Pope Pride is evident in everything that we do.
The heart of our mission is to grow students in their faith to become leaders who embody justice, peace, service, and mercy in our community. There is no better way to articulate our mission than to put these words into action. Our allschool service day in November was an opportunity for our entire community to serve together. Alongside our students, teachers came out of their classrooms and the staff came out of their offices to serve. Our service day happened to coincide well with Veteran's Day. The flagging of veteran grave sites at St. Michael's Cemetery was one special way for our school to honor those who have served our country while also helping the cemetery staff and loved ones of the deceased prepare for Veteran's Day. This year's service day also included a group of students and teachers who repurposed and upcycled wood pallets by transforming them into patriotic themed lawn decor. Lastly, a group of students served veterans and seniors in our East Forest Park neighborhood by performing light yard work and fall leaf clean-up. This group was able to assist more than a dozen of our neighbors.
On VETERANS DAY, a group of > veterans (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends) joined their student(s) for an appreciation lunch and slideshow highlighting the service of veteran relatives of PFPS students, faculty, and staff. Lunch was followed by a beautiful end of day prayer service outdoors on the Gunnery Sergeant Sullivan Alumni Plaza. To top it off, veterans in attendance were each gifted with one of the patriotic pallets designed on the all-school service day.

> Our GRANDPARENTS DAY celebration had an incredible response. 200 grandparents joined us over the course of two days. Grandparents and their grandchildren attended Mass, enjoyed breakfast, and received school tours.
Members of the SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUPPORT CLUB spent a Saturday at AMF Bowling in Chicopee at the Hampden/ Hampshire County Local Bowling Qualifier. Students kept score and cheered the athletes on. Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Our Special Olympics Support Club currently has 56 student members. Way to go Cardinals!
In November our KEY CLUB hosted a pasta dinner at Holy Name Parish. All proceeds from the dinner went towards the pew restoration project at the church. Thank you to the Key Club members, volunteers, donors, and all who attended this great cause.

During our THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE we collected $370 and food for 27 full Thanksgiving meals. The items collected were delivered to Sr. Eileen Sullivan at the Outreach Program at St. Michael’s Cathedral.
Thank you to the VET MED CLUB members who volunteered their time to help local families and their pets. The club worked with Kane's Krusade and Dakin to package and distribute over 2 tons of pet foods and treats.

The NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY organized a schoolwide dress down day held in December. Students, faculty and staff joined in to support the Diocese of Springfield's Outreach Ministry at St. Michael's Cathedral. Each year for the past 40 years the National Honor Society has supported the Adopt a Family event. This year, the Pope Francis Prep community raised an amazing $1,120!

Our CHRISTMAS CONCERT returned this year with a live audience and many friends and family members watching the livestream from their homes. The choir, band, jazz band, and guitar and percussion ensemble played a variety of fun music. Thank you to our Music Teacher and Band Director, Mrs. Campbell, for creating a wonderful music program at PFPS!

Our boys basketball team played Sci-Tech in the first annual KAMARI WILLIAMS CLASSIC in January. A 2002 graduate of Cathedral, Kamari was a tremendous basketball player, coach, and mentor. Kamari passed away suddenly in 2020 and the teams were grateful to be able to honor his legacy and look forward to playing this special game annually.
It was a lot of fun to witness the competitive, yet collaborative, nature of our GRIT ‘N WIT FIELD DAY! While one station may have been a breeze for some, the next station could be a stumbling block. Teamwork was critical to successfully complete the course —and then even more necessary in round two to improve their time on the course.

THE POPE FRANCIS PREP EXPERIENCE! BEING A PRIEST CHAPLAIN on campus here at Pope Francis Prep has been an eye-opening experience for me; an experience I need in order to be more effective in my priestly ministry. One would think that in a high school, it will always be the teacher, or in my case, the Priest Chaplain who “gives” or “teaches”. I, as a Priest, have found myself on the receiving end too.
I have received from the teachers, not material gifts necessarily (although I have received a lot of material gifts from them), but virtues in their patient endurance, joy in what they do, love of their professions and their students too, keenness to share their enormous wealth of knowledge, tireless encouragement they give their students, not giving up on anyone and even their love and friendship for each other. As a young Priest, I need to see and experience this. On the other hand, I have also received from the students and it has been much more than I could have ever imagined or expected. I have seen students appreciate life every day, students who love being students and living in the moment, appreciating what they have in school and making the best out of it. I have learned from students who are eager to offer a helping hand to fellow students. I have seen students who watch out for one another and are like big sisters and brothers to the underclassmen. I have learned from students who are struggling with life during the pandemic but find reason to keep moving ahead even though it seems that every corner they turn is rough and bumpy. I have seen students

who stay dedicated to their sporting events, not just for their personal gratification, but because of their teammates. I have experienced students who are morally sound more than you would imagine them to be at their age. I have been struck by students who are on fire with their faith; they make a stop in the Chapel as often as they can, attend our weekly Wednesday 7:15 am Mass, attend adoration frequently during their lunch time, go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation frequently, and ask questions about God (both those who believe in God and those who do not really believe in God), about the Catholic faith and theology or religion in general. These experiences may seem normal to you, but to me, it is not quite what I expected to see or experience in a high school in this day and age. Granted Pope Francis Prep is a Catholic School, I marvel at the enormous credible and life experience I have gained here. I am proud of Pope Francis Preparatory School; the staff, faculty and students. It is a family and an institution that stays true to their mission as “a Catholic co-educational, college-preparatory school which instills
Gospel values and fosters academic excellence in a diverse community of learners. Our mission is to challenge students to grow spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically to become critical thinkers and faith-based leaders who embody justice, peace, service, and mercy in the global community.” I am grateful every day I step inside Pope Francis Prep. I go first to the Chapel and thank God for the opportunity He has given to everyone at school that day and ask Him to keep all of us safe until the end of the day. I try my best to model a Christlike friendship and brotherhood to all that I meet in school and to let them know that I am here for them as a priest and friend. In January, dozens of PFPS students including Christian Leadership and Respect For Life club members joined Mr. Anziano, Father Stan, and Dr. Harrington at the SPRINGFIELD MARCH FOR LIFE event. The event included a Mass with Bishop Byrne at St. Michael's Cathedral and a march to Springfield City Hall where PFPS students shared quotes about the beauty and sanctity of life.

NATIONAL VOCATION AWARENESS WEEK is dedicated to promoting vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering a vocation. Four of our Theology classes met speakers who shared their personal stories about being called to their vocation and some of their experiences since.

The Pope Francis Prep community celebrated throughout National CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK with a focus on the value of a Catholic education and its contributions to our families, church, and community. The week kicked off with students delivering letters of gratitude to their local parishes on Sunday. Some Cardinals chose to write letters of gratitude to Bishop Byrne and they were able to give him their letters when he joined us for a special Catholic Schools Week Liturgy.

CARDINAL NATION A NEW SPORTS SEASON is always exciting and we were beyond thrilled to have a sense of normalcy return to our athletic programs in the fall of 2021. This school year also brought the start of new state-wide playoff tournaments. The fall and winter seasons brought plenty of excitement for our teams and our fan base. We saw the biggest and loudest crowds ever during the regular season and the excitement peaked in the playoffs. Cardinal pride is strong and home field advantage has a new meaning at Pope Francis Prep.
FALL SPORTS GIRLS SOCCER finished the season 15-1-2, winning the Bi-County league title. The girls qualified for both the Western Mass and State tournaments, ultimately finishing in the final 8 of the tournament. The girls posted a 2-0 win over Manchester Essex in the first round of the tournament, picked up a 3-0 win at Littleton in the round of 16, before falling 3-2 to West Bridgewater on the road in the quarterfinals. During the regular season, Isabella Meadows '24 led the team with 47 goals and 13 assists, totaling 60 points in 18 games. Along with Meadows, Stephanie Cesar '24, Cassandra Kosnicki '22, Maeve O’Sullivan '23, Sophia Roselli '22, Brenna Sears '23, and Lily Turmel '22 earned all-league honors. The BOYS SOCCER team was moved up to a tougher league and finished 6-9-3 overall, but still earned a berth in the state tournament. Led by captains Nick Bertelli '22, Jack Turmel '23, and Cody Martins '23, the boys won their first-round game defeating Littleton 2-1 at home in overtime, and then went to Monument where

they won 2-1 in overtime in the round of 16. Their season ended with a 2-1 loss to Easthampton in the quarterfinals. Nick Bertelli made All-Western Mass first team, while Cody Martins and Ryan Vedovelli '25 earned All-Western Mass second team. The BOYS CROSS COUNTRY team finished 8-5 in Coach Dan Walsh’s final year with the team. The boys finished 13th in the Division 3C state championships. Colin O’Brien '22 was the top finisher for the Cardinals, posting a 29th place finish at the championships. The GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY team finished 11-2 and were fourth in the Division 3C state Championships and 12th overall at the Division 3 All-State Championships. Kaitlyn Ondrick '24 finished 10th overall at the Division 3 meet to pace the team. Meghan Sullivan '22 finished 37th overall at the All-State Championships to lead the Cardinals. The GOLF team finished 12-2 and won the Valley East League Title while going undefeated in league play. The team was led by Jaelyn DeBoise '22 who captured her first Western Mass individual title, shooting a 79. Jaelyn also qualified for the New England and National girls tournaments. Jaelyn, along with Matt Bolduc '25 and Mike McGrath '25 were named first-team All-Western Mass. Jaelyn also won female golfer of the year for the second time. Ryan O’Leary '23 shot the low 9 hole score of the season with a 33.
WINTER SPORTS GIRLS BASKETBALL finished 10-10 and qualified for the state tournament. The team was led by its three captains—Audrey Mason '23, Makenna Simis '22, and Lily Turmel '22. Isabella Meadows '24 and Ava Albano '24 led the team in scoring throughout the season. In tournament play, the team won their preliminary round game, defeating Matignon 36-29 before losing at Malden Catholic. BOYS BASKETBALL had their best season in school history, finishing 14-6 and qualified for the state tournament. During the regular season, the Cardinals beat Sci-Tech 91-65 to win the 1st annual Kamari Williams Memorial Classic. The team was led by Captain Adam Sarlan '22 who was selected to play in the Senior All-Star game and Cam Vedovelli '23 who led the team in points with 361.

The BOYS HOCKEY team finished 12-5-2, won the PF Invitational, and qualified for the state tournament. The team was led by forward Josh Iby '23 who finished with 15 goals, 16 assists, and 31 points. Ryan Rhodes '22 paced the Cardinals in the net with a 1.50 goals-against average and a 92% save percentage. They won their first-round tournament game, defeating Waltham 6-1 at home before losing to Braintree in the round of 16. The team ended the season ranked 8th in the state. In their second year, the GIRLS HOCKEY team finished with a record of 12-7-1. Led by captains Morgan Peritz '22 and Lauren Crocker '22, the Cardinals qualified for the state tournament and defeated North Quincy 5-4 at home in the first round. The team lost 2-1 to Notre Dame Academy in the round of 16. Both Pertiz and Crocker led the team with 22 points each. During a late-season run, the Lady Cardinals entered the top 10 in the D1 state rankings after beating Billerica 3-0 and Malden Catholic 1-0. The ALPINE SKIING team had another successful and fun-filled season. Declan Sears '22 was selected for first-team AllWestern Mass, placed second overall in Pioneer Valley, and represented the team and state at the USSA Eastern Regional High School Championships. Keegan Sears '24 earned second-team All-Western Mass honors and placed 7th in the Pioneer Valley and Alex Watroba '23 qualified for the State Championships. The BOYS AND GIRLS INDOOR TRACK teams had a number of individuals qualify for the state championships. The boys 4x200 relay team of Raymond Stoddard '22, Tandy Brownell '22, Julian Parent '23, and Vontae Martin '22 finished 18th in the Division 4 state championships. Brenna Sears '23 finished 2nd in the 600 meters, Maeve O’Sullivan '23 finished 2nd in the 300 meters, Allison Moloney '22 finished 6th in the 55 meters and the 4x200 relay team of Allison Moloney, Stephanie Cesar '24, Hannah Keeney '24, and Maeve O’Sullivan finished 2nd overall.

Mary Ann (Pagnoni) Dietschler CHS ’61 is the founder of a 501C(3) non-profit called Wreaths with a Reason. This organization raises funds by selling wreaths and other goods and all profits go to women and children affected by human trafficking. This past winter, Mary Ann was joined by her grandchildren, Caleb Banaitis ’23, Sophia Dietschler ’25, and Chloe Banaitis ’26, who helped by setting up a wreath sale and also sold their own goods and donated a portion back to this organization. This very successful event helped Wreaths for a Reason reach an incredible goal of raising $100,000 for local and domestic organizations that either directly free women and children from human trafficking or help restore their lives after being rescued.

John now resides in Arlington, VA, and enjoys spending time as a grandfather. David S. Mazzaferro CHS ’81
recently shot a recurring costarring role on "Power Book II: Ghost". Look for him in season 2 episode 10 and season 3 episode 2 as the pilot.
Christina “Tina” (Farley) Kelley CHS ’81 is happily retired at an early age and living her best life in Bradenton, Florida. She enjoyed a wonderful career in physical therapy that spanned a variety of settings and she met many great people along the way. Lieutenant Brian Elliott CHS ’85 has
been a Springfield Police Officer for 25 years after beginning his career in the Amherst Police Department. The Springfield native and Cathedral High School graduate was promoted to Sergeant in 2010. A founding member of the Metro Unit; he has been integral to the police department's initiatives and programs related to the homeless, mentally ill, and drug-addicted
