Growing Stronger Together
Dear Friends, As we reflect on the past six months, many would have never imagined we would find ourselves still coping with the new realities associated with this pandemic. Surely, this has been a challenging time for our school community, our alumni, and our families and friends. This pandemic has touched all of us. On behalf of all of us at Pope Francis Prep, I hope this message finds you healthy and well. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
When leaving campus on Friday, March 13, we knew school would be closed down for at least a few weeks. Little did we know our students and faculty would not be returning to campus for the remainder of the spring semester. Fortunately, Pope Francis Prep was able to shift gears immediately and without interruption to deliver instruction remotely on that Monday morning. Following a thoughtful, strategic approach infused by input from faculty, students, and parents, Pope Francis Prep modified its daily schedule while maintaining the structure and accountability of our daily routines and learning experiences. Those few weeks of remote education expanded quickly into months. Our students successfully crossed the finish line through an online experience that proved to be productive and meaningful, while also finding ways to keep connected to one another. The culmination of our spring efforts included the June 4 Commencement for the Class of 2020. With a long list of safety protocols in place, the graduation ceremony for our seniors afforded us the opportunity to send them off with the pomp and circumstance they so deserved.
During these past six months, I have witnessed and been a part of a team of talented individuals who have navigated this uncharted course together. Along the way, we have changed direction, incurred obstacles and roadblocks that seemed impossible to divert, and we have been tested and challenged. Our team demonstrated a relentless pursuit for success with a consistent focus to remain faithful to our mission. On August 27, Pope Francis Prep reopened its doors, welcoming 370 students, including a freshmen class of 112. A team of colleagues joined me throughout the summer months to conduct surveys and carefully craft our reopening plan with the objective to safely reopen for the 2020-2021 school year with fulltime in-person classes, while also providing a remote learning option. On a daily basis, the school reviews the health and assesses the safety of all students and personnel and makes adjustments to in-person and remote learning if/when necessary. Following the guidance from the CDC, MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the MA Department of Public Health, the
school implemented many new safety measures to ensure students, faculty, and staff are safe at school. Through it all, our school has grown stronger. This has been, and continues to be a time to think outside of the box, to innovate our programs, and to recommit to building a better, stronger version of Pope Francis Prep. I believe our students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends can be proud of our school as we continue to evolve together in fulfilling our mission such that students graduate to be critical thinkers who lead through their faith to make our world a better place. THROUGHOUT HER 49-YEAR MINISTRY in Catholic education at Pope Francis Preparatory School and Cathedral High School, Diane Tetreault, SSJ served thousands of students. Prior to her assignment at Cathedral in 1971, Sister Diane taught at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Springfield for one year and at St. Mary Morning Star School in Pittsfield for two years. Earlier this summer, following a period of prayer and discernment, Sister Diane made the difficult decision to retire from teaching. Sister Diane met her students each day, committed to the Pope Francis Prep mission to instill Gospel values, and also consistent with the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph to live and work that all people may be united with God and one another. Students who had Sister Diane as a teacher and mentor will be forever blessed. Before Sister Diane hurried away to retirement life, we had an opportunity to connect about her journey as a Sister of St. Joseph as well as her experiences as a teacher for more than 50 years. How and when did you know that you wanted to become a Sister of St. Joseph? What can you tell us about that discernment process?
I believe that God has given each individual person unique strengths and gifts with which they can make a positive contribution for the good of people. Understanding how I could best do that was important to me.
My sister Jane, my twin brother David, and I attended Holy Trinity School in Greenfield. Taught by the Sisters of St. Joseph, we received an excellent education. It was there in meeting these wonderful women that I was greatly influenced by their dedication to their teaching and the personal interest they took in each of their students. I knew I was interested in teaching, and as time went along, I felt

God’s call to join the community. Conversations with my family and friends and exploration with teachers and mentors confirmed my prior personal reflection, leading me to the decision to enter the Sisters of St. Joseph. I graduated from Greenfield High School in 1963 and entered the community on September 15 that year. You have taught thousands of students over the years. What trends did you see from the 1970’s to today?
The trends across five decades of teaching have truly been remarkable! Technology would be the first thing that has changed. In the past, education was based on books, lectures and worksheets and students would have to spend hours in libraries using the Dewey Decimal System looking through books for a project or research. In the classroom then we were using the chalkboard, filmstrips, movie projector, overhead projector/transparencies, and a television/VCR on a three-tier cart so that it could be easily moved among the classes. In subsequent years we were going to the Computer Lab and mastering the use of the Smartboard. A key objective today is teaching how to use the internet, websites, the iPad, Smartphones, Surfaces, Google classroom and Zoom effectively. So many educational learning opportunities are available on the internet. The curriculum has expanded to having students working together in groups to develop their communication skills to discuss topics to increase their knowledge. There are always new ways to present information and integrate new technologies! Tell us about your colleagues throughout your time teaching.
When I started teaching there were seventytwo sisters living at the convent, and all were assigned to Cathedral High either as administrators or as teachers. The names of our sisters from our legacy schools are
beautifully etched in St. Joseph Chapel. There are too many colleagues for me to list in this space, but I am especially grateful for Sister Veronica Brown and Sister Mary James, who provided me with countless hours of mentoring and support with planning lessons and kept me apprised of all the details involved in teaching. Throughout the years they were always interested in teaching and provided me with topics and current event articles to use with my classes. Sister Denise Granger was a valuable colleague in the Social Studies department and provided supportive leadership and a clear vision as department chair and later as principal. She introduced me to computers and through many classes taught me many valuable skills. We created some wonderful memories while team teaching! Along with Leslie Perreault, Kevin McCarthy, Lynn Anne Leone, Diane Trela, Jane Davis, and Terry Ford, I believe our most thorough work was teaching global issues. We are indebted to Sister Annette McDermott for introducing us to the United Nations! Working together surely brought out the best in each person! Mrs. Frances Jensen was an inspiration to all of us with her knowledge of
political history and current events and her willingness to share her insights with her colleagues and students. Mrs. Shirley Pratt gave encouragement and support to everyone by being a good listener, along with her legacy of teaching many generations of students. What were some of the funniest experiences you had while teaching?
Several of my funniest experiences involve mentoring Marie Mort, who was perhaps the most enjoyable person with whom to share ideas about teaching and creating lesson plans. She had a wonderful knack for working with students in the Home Economics and Bachelor Living classes, teaching them about recipes, menu planning, food preparation and baking. Together they created fantastic meals and wonderful aromas for the classrooms nearby! Her stories were without equal, and we should have kept notes for a best seller! On an annual basis, the Social Studies department planned an activity for faculty to dress up and students would guess which historical person we were portraying. millions, is one of my favorite persons. That said, it took me countless days and hours to search out the proper dress, hat, and pocketbook! It was truly a fun day! Working with my fellow class advisors, our trips off campus with the Freshman class were fun — whether it was riding several of the “dangerous rides” at Riverside (Six Flags) or to try my skill at roller skating at the United Skates in Wilbraham! In between there were the Friday night dances and car washes to raise funds for the treasury that always had interesting stories connected with them. What parting message do you have for your friends and colleagues at PFPS?

To my community, the Sisters of St. Joseph, my family and friends, the incredible students, parents, the past and present dedicated teachers, administration, Board of Directors, staff, coaches, and alumni, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude. I experienced the unfolding of my ministry of teaching through these amazing years and you have played a major role in our shared mission. I will continue to pray for you, your families, and the Pope Francis Preparatory school community, that “We live and work to bring all people into union with God and with one another” as we continue to navigate these unchartered waters during these unprecedented times. This sacred space is dedicated to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield to honor their legacy of service to our Catholic high schools for more than 130 years. Their commitment to Catholic education spanned from Sacred Heart High School, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary High School, St. Jerome High School, Holyoke Catholic High School, Cathedral High School, and Pope Francis Preparatory School. In all, more than 430 Sisters of St. Joseph (some of whom worked in multiple schools) collectively dedicated more than 4,700 sister-years of service to students in these Catholic high schools. With deep gratitude we thank the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, along with many other women religious, brothers, and priests for their faithful ministry in uniting young women and men with God through their commitment to Catholic education.

POPE FRANCIS PREP HONORED the 74 members of the Class of 2020, who finished their senior year learning remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 4, 2020 we welcomed our seniors and their families back on campus for an intimate commencement ceremony that turned out to be a perfect ending to a less-than-perfect school year. A memorable day we will never forget.

In the middle of March, the Pope Francis Prep community of learners and educators found courage in the face of adversity. On-campus, in-person learning as we knew it had become off-campus, distance learning overnight. Fortunately, Pope Francis Prep was well prepared to deliver its curriculum via an online platform. Having embraced a 1:1 Microsoft Surface program a few years ago, coupled with the majority of textbooks in ebook format with paperless assignments, and the use of Google Classroom and digital note taking, our entire school community seamlessly shifted gears over the weekend.

SPRINGFIELD — During a recent honors
chemistry class, Pope Francis Preparatory School teacher Nicole Woltschlaeger checked in on several lab groups. “I popped in and out of the groups to see if they were struggling with the problem, only I was doing it from a screen, not in person,” said Woltschlaeger, who like all teachers is conducting her classes online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With Gov. Charlie Baker’s announcement this week that schools will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year, many districts are struggling to adjust to remote teaching. But for Pope Francis Prep, a private Catholic high school in Springfield, it’s business as usual, with students attending virtual classes from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with no change in curriculum. “We were very fortunate to already have a one-to-one model for every student, so each of them has a Microsoft Surface Pro (tablet computer),” said Paul Harrington, head of the school. “All of our books are ebooks and there is very little paper at the school already. We discourage

students from turning in assignments on paper and our teachers are very comfortable using technology in their classrooms, so that has made it easier.” There are 340 students at the high school and 35 teachers. Students are expected to attend all of the classes they would have gone to at school. Attendance is taken every day in every class. Teachers use Zoom, Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams to connect with each of their classes. There are four periods with 15-minutes breaks in between. “We opted for a very regimented format in order to limit any loss of learning,” Harrington said. “So from the first day students were home, which was March 16, they were basically mirroring their school day.” Woltschlaeger said teachers were so eager to get students into a routine they overdid it the first few days. “When we first kicked off we might have been too aggressive because the feedback from parents was that their kids were in front of their computers for 10 hours a day,” she said. “We needed to figure out how to use different resources, how to make the best use of the 75-minute
class time, and we started limiting homework, which in turn reduced the screen time. Now I think we have all settled into a routine.” Sophia Roselli is a 16-year-old sophomore at the high school. “All of the teachers have been excellent in conducting classes. They utilize Google Classroom, which we have been using all year. Zoom has been integrated daily for instruction,” she said. “My teachers have done a great job keeping my classes challenging, yet manageable.” Roselli said while her school day remains the same, her homework has been lighter. “This reduction allows us to be present and focused during class time,” she said. For Woltschlaeger the biggest challenge has been engaging with students virtually. “I teach three classes a day and it would be pretty boring for them to hear me talk the entire time,” she said. Instead, she has found resources online that allow students to do virtual experiments. Sometimes she uses kits she has at home as props for lessons, and she

is also using the Zoom breakout classroom feature to give students a chance to interact with each other. “It’s pretty amazing how many resources have become available to teachers in the past few weeks,” she said. “Programs that you used to have to pay for are now free and it makes it a lot easier for students to access. The University of Colorado has some wonderful simulations for chemistry and physics classes that I have been utilizing. I can also share my screen with students if I need to show them how to solve a problem mathematically.” While teaching tools can help with classwork, there is no real way to mimic face-to-face interactions. “Some students have taken to the platform, but others are still reluctant to speak up in front of their peers, which actually isn’t any different than in an actual classroom,” Woltschlaeger said.

Extracurricular activities that make up part of the school experience are harder to duplicate than classes, she said. “The hardest part of being away from school has been adjusting to the new routine,” Roselli said. “During the school year, my schedule is filled with school, sports practices and games, club meetings, and activities with friends. From virtual talent shows, to gifts of gratitude, to cultural celebrations, to Christian service, we discovered an abundance of ways to feel together while apart.

GREEN THUMB ANYONE? Mrs. Geiger and her husband worked hard > this summer to sow a new vegetable garden at PFPS. This year’s bounty included tomatoes, different types of beans, peppers, lettuce, beets, eggplant, kale, yellow squash, zucchini, basil, acorn squash, watermelon and pumpkins just to name a few!

Cardinals have talent! Plan B went into place when our CARDINAL TALENT SHOW was canceled. 15 students and staff members submitted videos of their incredible talents and the videos were shared virtually through social media. During this challenging time, the number of local families dependent on help with food and meals is growing. Recently, The Enfield Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen put out an appeal asking for donations. With this in mind, the faculty and staff at PFPS decided to participate in a MOBILE FOOD DRIVE to help our neighbors to the south.

NATION Highlights Congratulations to SIMBA PELLETIER ’20 on being named Western Mass Division III Soccer Player of the Year and for making the 1st team All-Western Mass at the Lusitano Alumni and Fans Banquet on March 8, 2020. Congratulations to Coach Pantuosco as well on a terrific season! We are thrilled to announce the appointment of CHRIS CONNORS AS HEAD COACH of our inaugural girls Varsity Hockey team. We are excited to offer girls hockey at Pope Francis for the first time this upcoming winter season and look forward to growing the program under Coach Connors’ leadership. Congratulations to JAELYN DEBOISE ’22 for being named All Western Mass MVP by Western Mass Golf. Over the summer, Jaelyn also participated in her first Massachusetts Golf Association event and was the Silver Division Champion at the 87th Massachusetts Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship. Way to make us proud, Jaelyn! COACH JOHN GODA won 2 awards for the 2019-2020 sports seasons. He was the recipient of the 2020 MIAA Girls Outdoor Track Coach of the Year award and the Western Mass Girls Indoor Track Coach of the Year award by the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association. Well deserved, Coach Goda! Congratulations to RYAN LEONARD ’23 on being named the highly coveted Mr. Hockey 2020 Award by Neutral Zone. Ryan finished the season with 24 points in his first year of Division-1 Mass Hockey. We cannot wait to see Ryan and the team back in action this winter!

AS THE SPRING SPORTS SEASON approached, it became clearer each week that it was becoming out of reach. Although our students, athletes, and coaches held out hope that a portion of the season may be salvaged, in the end disappointment prevailed. This disappointment could not diminish the tremendous spirit of our student athletes. We salute the 43 seniors who had looked forward to competing in their final season of high school sports.

Roll Pope: THE ROAD TO OUR FIRST SUPER 8 CHAMPIONSHIP
THE POPE FRANCIS PREP HOCKEY TEAM strategically schedules games with the stiffest competition within the Baystate, New England, and beyond. Entering the 2020 Super 8 tournament as the number three seed and coming off of a six-game winning streak, the Cardinals were ready to play. The Cardinals came out victorious over Catholic Memorial (6-1) and BC High (4-0), followed by a (2-1) loss to Arlington sending the Cardinals to face St. John’s Prep. The Cardinals beat St. John’s Prep with a 3-2 OT win, punching their return ticket to the Super 8 Championship at the Garden. As the excitement around the final game grew throughout the week, so too did the Coronavirus pandemic. With just a few days to go, the MIAA announced the decision to cancel the tournament, declaring each of the final teams champions. We congratulate the 2019-2020 team on an incredible season.

How does it feel to win your first Super 8 Championship?
The hockey program has such a rich tradition of success, tells us about the support that alumni bring to the team each year?
It feels awesome. We have been knocking on the door for several years now, especially the last two years where we lost both finals in overtime. It was extra special to do it in a year when nobody outside the program expected us to be there since we lost 12 seniors from those two Super 8 finalists’ teams. A lot of hard work from the players led to the title. They had a strong work ethic from day one and their continued improvement throughout the season was fun to watch. From our defense and goaltending to our
Last season was our 12th straight for the program being selected for the Super 8 Tournament. Those teams were very good and special teams. There are also many other great CHS teams dating back to Cathedral’s first hockey team. I think that is what makes the program so special. The thousands of alumni hockey players have created an aura around the program and our current players want to make our alumni proud. There is certainly a rich tradition that the current
players feel a responsibility to uphold. Last season’s championship was the first for the program, but it was also the culmination of a building project that took many years and all our alumni players were a part of it. It is unfortunate that we did not have the chance to play the final game in the Garden last year but the experience of the two Garden games (2018, 2019) was unforgettable. The alumni and community support in those two games was overwhelming. There is certainly a spirit around the team, I know I can sense it every game we play. A healthy pressure to make sure we represent our alumni and hopefully make them proud. What are your goals for next season?
Looking ahead our goals for the program and the current team are always the same. Work hard to improve every day, bring a team first attitude and make our alumni proud. We will play the best teams we can find and see where that will lead us.

When I arrived in the Diocese of Springfield in August 2014, it was evident to me that something major had to be done for Catholic secondary education in our Western Massachusetts area. The partially demolished Cathedral High School was still a stark reminder of the June 1, 2011 tornado’s devastation. Our high school age students needed a school where they could fully use their gifts and talents on athletic fields, a proper theater and classrooms that were equipped for the twenty-first century. With the help of many educators, Board members and devoted supporters of Catholic education, the dream of Pope Francis Preparatory School has become a reality. I express my deep gratitude to all who have made this dream possible — born of struggles, hopes and a vision for giving our students the best faith-based education possible. As I finish my time as the Ninth Bishop of Springfield, I thank God for what is being accomplished at Pope Francis Preparatory School. I pray for God’s continued blessings on what has begun as a journey of faith and trust and on all who make PFPS a home for God’s presence!”
WE UNITE through PRAYER TEACHING, LEARNING, AND WORKING FROM HOME did not keep us from uniting through prayer. Members of the Christian Leadership Class along with all students through their theology classes prepared thoughtful prayers to be shared each morning through social media. These very personal prayers for family, hope, love, compassion, healing, first-responders, inclusion, mercy, and justice served as a special daily reminder of the unique opportunity our students have by attending a Catholic high school. As the weeks progressed in the spring, the personal impact of the Coronavirus became a reality for members of our school community. Students, families, faculty, and staff were invited to submit names of friends and loved ones in need of special prayers and intentions. Colorful hearts adorned the entrance of the chapel through the spring months and into the summer as a poignant reminder that we were in this together, united through faith.

Channing Calcasola CHS ’10 currently works for the City of Springfield as a Program Coordinator for the Afterschool and Summer Enrichment Programs. Her job is to oversee and implement educational enrichment activities for youth who attend these programs. Channing recently purchased her first home in Springfield. Channing said it is very important to her to keep her roots in the amazing community she was lucky to grow up in. Channing worked as a track coach at Pope Francis for a year, and now serves as the assistant recruiting coach for women’s soccer at Springfield Technical Community College, where she attended for 2 years following graduation. Channing works closely with the local high schools including Pope Francis Prep students as a mentor to get them on the right path for college.

the sacrament of marriage on July 31, 2020. Andrew and Liza met during their freshman year at Holyoke Catholic in 2006. They quickly became friends and continued that friendship throughout high school. They graduated in 2010 together (literally together, as their names are next to each other alphabetically). Fast forward to 2014 when these two reconnected and that friendship quickly grew into so much love and appreciation for one another. Nick Tangredi CHS ’10 currently resides
in Miami, Florida. During these times of uncertainty, Nick wanted to play an active role in helping the community. With a Marketing Degree and passion for business, Nick began Novid Clothing. Inspired by his favorite Cathedral hockey hoodie he would wear during his high school classes, Nick wanted to combine comfortability and safety. Novid Clothing offers lightweight hoodies with a built-in mouth covering mask. With a strong desire to

Letter from the Director of Development Dear Alumni, Family, and Friends, As Pope Francis Prep, our nation, and the world grapples with the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, I hope it makes you proud to know our school has confronted this challenge head-on. Tending to our students' and families' physical and emotional health has been paramount to their well-being and our success.
Throughout the spring, Pope Francis Prep was recognized as a leader among peer institutions for its stability, structure, creativity, and resourcefulness in adapting seamlessly to a remote platform, enabling students to continue learning from home. This pandemic has affected each of us in some way and has inspired us to reevaluate what is most important in our lives: faith, family, friends, and the organizations we care about most. While the short and long-term impacts from COVID-19 remain uncertain, we seek comfort in those relationships, institutions, and organizations that provide us with a glimpse of hope and a sense of courage and growth. During the past few months, I have enjoyed many conversations with alumni and friends via my "home office." Knowing that so many of you view Pope Francis Prep as a source of strength and stability reinforces the joy I find in fulfilling our mission each day. Last year, Pope Francis Prep benefitted from an overwhelming show of support from our entire school community of alumni, family, and friends. With the cancellation of 25 SPONSORS in-person spring fundraising events, Pope Francis Prep hosted its first virtual 5k. 183 RUNNERS THE CARDINAL 5K CHALLENGE was organized to raise money for tuition 915 KM TRAVELED assistance for families directly impacted by COVID-19, while also RAISED engaging in a community building opportunity. Runners and walkers from around the country received a race day t-shirt and showed their support by sharing photos via social media. Participants included alumni, board members, faculty, parents, staff, students, and leaders in the community. Thank you to everyone who helped make our first 5k a great success!
