LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Engagement. Service. Leadership.

Dear Friends, Guided by our mission and sharpened by daily practice, Pope Francis Preparatory School continues to reimagine Catholic education in what can only be described as an exciting year of transformation! Marked by the opening of our new stateof-the-art campus; the launch of our 1:1 Microsoft initiative to our curriculum model; the addition of a weekly presence from Diocesan clergy to our Office of Campus Ministry; and the rise of Cardinal Nation at our very own home athletic facilities, our school community has been deeply engaged in the rich and rewarding work of learning together. As part of that work, strategic initiatives have been developed, establishing a bold vision for the future of Pope Francis Prep. Whether we were exploring new methods of teaching, honoring our diverse learning community, expanding our student leadership opportunities, or embracing innovation, it was purposefully in service of our mission — challenging students to grow spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically to become critical thinkers and faith-based leaders. This issue of the Cardinal Magazine celebrates the closing semester of our first academic year as Pope Francis Prep and focuses on the power of authentic engagement. You will see examples throughout its pages with features, highlights and articles that embody our School’s commitment to engagement, service and leadership. Also, at the close of school last June, we said farewell to the first graduating class of Pope Francis Preparatory School and

welcomed them as our newest alumni. We reminded them of the incredible impact their Catholic education will have on their future and that their ties to Pope Francis Prep will serve as its foundation. They are a cherished part of the monumental transition of our becoming Pope Francis Preparatory School. A transition that reflected on our past, embraced the work of today, and honored our valuable mission. It is my hope that they will feel a deep sense of pride in their accomplishments and know that they are exceptionally prepared and poised to take on the next part of their journey with determination, integrity, and faith – exactly how those of us who remain behind are ready to welcome another school year. Sincerely,

Dr. Paul Harrington Head of School

COMMENCEMENT 2019

4 YEARS, 3 SCHOOLS,

ONE BIG FAMILY A G R A D U AT E R E F L E C T S

The Class of 2019 will forever be remembered as the first graduating class of Pope CLASS OF Francis Preparatory School, and will also have the distinction of being the first graduating class to occupy our incredible new school. This has truly been a year of new beginnings and firsts for our entire school community, and it was the Class of 2019 that had fully experienced their Catholic school education as reimagined. They likely began their high school journey at one of our legacy schools, and then found themselves navigating the challenges and blessings of coming together as one school. Finally, they were a part of realizing the long-anticipated vision of a permanent school campus. This school — the building and its community spirit — will now be their alma mater and will remain here filled with pride as they enter the next phase in their education journey. CONGRATULATIONS

2019

We caught up with Elizabeth Gourde ’19, one of the 92 graduates celebrating this milestone on June 5, 2019, to get an intimate look at the meaning of this special event and looking back at her Catholic school education.

What was your favorite memory from that day?

I remember, that as Dr. Harrington spoke, I just kind of looked around at the surreal time and place. It felt like I was having an out-of-body experience, like in the movies. My heart hammered in my chest so loudly, that I thought it might break my ribs! I was surrounded by a sea of red caps and gowns and I felt myself drowning in that feeling. I then looked to my right, and shared a bittersweet smile with Eileen Griffin and Jordan Guthrie. It was a small and silent gesture, but it was filled with so much meaning. Here were two girls I had met at the beginning of my journey at Holyoke Catholic, who could now offer me more comfort in that singular moment than most people I had known my whole life! In

four quick years, our mutual experiences had turned us from acquaintances, to friends, to family. It didn’t matter our backgrounds; Holyoke Catholic, Cathedral, or elsewhere. All that mattered in the end, was who you were together presently at this new school. We had gotten past any harbored resentment over the merge and found that we had adapted and grown from it. Grown together. There was not one person in my class who I felt I could not turn to in a time of need and in that overwhelming moment the sweet girls to my right provided it. How did you feel about your classmates’ speeches?

I was ecstatic to hear Rachael, our class’s valedictorian, and Seth, our salutatorian, speak! They may be intelligent, but they are deserving beyond their wits. They are fantastic friends, leaders, and so much more! Their speeches were brief, yet entertaining and insightful. Rachael and I have known each other since age

three and she was the valedictorian of our middle school class as well. It truly felt like everything was coming full circle as she spoke. It was a nice touch to also have Nylan Baldwin, our poet laureate, share his work as well. Who, not what, do you want to be in the future?

Like every other person in this world, I can only dream of making a lasting footprint on history. For now, I’ve adopted the words of the late British philosopher Alan Watts; “The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain, and so obvious, and so simple.” I want to be someone who appreciates every day and spends it living to the fullest. I want to treat others with memorable kindness. I believe that it is that kind of living which inspires others to act the same. Describe the new school community in 3 words.

Home. Sweet. Home. The abundant windows allow light to illuminate the

whole building, giving it a warm and friendly feel. The art teachers have worked tirelessly to transform a modern and sleek space into a hub for creative energy, which has made the atmosphere even brighter. I love the open floor plan, too. All of these factors contribute to a limitless feeling — you can strike up a conversation with anyone, create anything, and achieve anything. What is the one thing you learned at Pope Prep?

Be unafraid to be unapologetically you. That advice got me a part in the spring musical, a chance to be our mascot — Big Red, and earned me the title of “most spirited (female)” for superlatives. To what beliefs learned during your Catholic education, will you hold tightly when the losses that inevitably visit all of our lives come calling? 1 It’s okay to ask questions. There is no such thing as a “dumb question,” only a poor reception. 2 It’s okay to need help. 3 God is waiting at the door. There’s no handle on his side, so you have to let him in. Make that choice, let him in. 4 Try new things. 5 Treat people how you want to be treated. Set a precedent for yourself. Smile in the halls, say “hello.” 6 Treasure your treasures. When you make good friends, you keep them — to be rich in friendships gives life so much value. 7 Say ‘thank you’. Be appreciative for even the little things.

Where are you heading in the Fall?

I’ll be spending my freshman year of college at Elms College in Chicopee, MA. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into their honors program, and I’m bursting at the seams with excitement to see what new opportunities will be opened to me on their campus!

ANTHONY D. GULLUNI

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts. Brought up in a Catholic household, he began his education at St. Mary’s School in Longmeadow and went on to Cathedral High School, from which he graduated in 1998. He then attended Wilbraham and Monson Academy for a post-graduate year. Atty. Gulluni then earned a bachelor’s degree and juris doctorate from Western New England College. His legal career began in the private sector, but soon he found his way in to public service, initially with the City of Springfield as an assistant city solicitor. Atty. Gulluni then took an opportunity to work for District Attorney William M. Bennett as an assistant district attorney where he fell in love with the work of a trial attorney and prosecutor. He worked through D.A. Bennett’s final years in office and continued his service for District Attorney Mark Mastroianni. It was there that Atty. Gulluni took on a role in which he prosecuted some of the more serious cases in the county, as well as serving as a liaison to the Forest Park neighborhood of Springfield, where he was raised and lived, at the time. After a successful run for the position of Hampden District Attorney, Atty. Gulluni was sworn in as Hampden District Attorney on January 7, 2015. Now in his second four-year term as District Attorney, Atty. Gullini has added focusing on the youth of the county through education and drug addiction prevention efforts. He has invested great time and resources in a robust Community Safety and Outreach program working with other faith-based, non-profit, and community-oriented organizations. In addition, he serves as a board member of AAA of Pioneer Valley. We welcome Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gullini to the Board of Directors and look forward to his enthusiasm and support of Catholic education and our school community.

Annual Student Art Show The evening featured an incredibly beautiful exhibit with student artists on hand to discuss their work created in varied media. What made this show more unique was that it was displayed on two floors throughout our Learning Commons. With the open floor plan and high ceilings, it afforded viewers the ability to see a piece up close and personal — literally inches from their face — and then again from across the room or from above or beneath the piece. This truly brought a unique visual experience that is hard to replicate in a traditional single room gallery showing. A truly inspirational evening!

Coast to Coast Project Illustration Class Sparked by a conversation with a friend, and peer teacher from a high school in Los Angeles, CA, Mr. James Ilson developed a collaborative project for his Illustration art class students. While the English class in LA was practicing Haiku writing based on their study of “Virtues”, Mr. Ilson suggested that students from his Illustration class could serve as inspiration for this writing. The art students sent drawings, to which the writing students back in LA, created haiku based on what virtue they thought was represented in each of the drawings. The results were proudly displayed at the Pope Francis Prep Art Show.

COMMUNITY

POINTS of PRIDE

The first annual PFPS TALENT SHOW was a hit! The talent was so incredible that there is already plenty of buzz about next year’s show!

Pope Francis Prep takes great pride in intentionally creating a welcoming community were students are encouraged to become involved. Every new opportunity builds a foundation that will serve to support our students during the most transformative years of their young lives. Our students and outstanding staff members are all part of our rich success story and we are proud and honored to help each of them realize their full potential. Becoming an active, contributing member of the Pope Francis Prep community creates a spirit of pride all its own!

POPE FRANCIS > PLAYERS brought a spectacular “double show format” musical to our stage this past spring! Alice in Wonderland as Act 1 and the Wizard of Oz as Act 2, with a very clever transition between the two. The student designed set was unprecedented as they used the balcony as an extended stage!

SPIRIT WEEK FUN Celebrating our Pope Francis Pep spirit, this special (and very silly!) week is designed for students to celebrate school pride and was sponsored by the Student Advisory Board with assistance from members of the National Honors Society.

The OUTDOOR ADVENTURE CLUB went camping at Morse Hill Outdoor Education Center in Shutesbury, MA this past spring. The students enjoyed some beautiful weather and went hiking, completed a ropes course, and built their own water rafts.

In celebration of NATIONAL GRANDPARENT DAY, we hosted Pope Francis Prep grandparents at a special Mass in our beautiful theater followed by breakfast with their grandchildren. Many of our Pope Francis Prep grandparents are alumni of our legacy schools and were delighted to see the amazing facility that their grandchildren now enjoy. We greeted over 120 proud grandparents that morning!

UNDERCLASSMEN AWARD CEREMONY Top juniors were recognized by receipt of Book Awards from many colleges. Twenty-six students received over $589,000 in scholarship awards that evening!

IS SEEING BELIEVING? or IS BELIEVING SEEING? “ Faith is to believe what you do not see; and the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” SAINT AUGUSTINE Our students are informed both by what they see in the material world around them and also by faith — which involves seeing and trusting what God has revealed to them daily. If you were to ask our students to describe faith, you would might hear responses such as trust, confidence, assurance, or belief. All of which are true, but at Pope Francis Prep our students also know that there is more to faith than those words convey. They can see that faith involves elements of believing and actions that are regularly demonstrated throughout our school community. The Catholic faith illuminates our learning community, and throughout the spring semester at Pope Francis Prep it was clear that we saw more—not less—through the eyes of faith which served to deepen relationships with God and one another.

SERVICE

LENTEN JOURNEY: In final preparation for Easter, our school community journeyed through the Stations of the Cross. Students, faculty and staff came together to bring the story of Jesus’ suffering, death and resurrection to life. In addition to the traditional Stations of the Cross, students also connected modern-day experiences to Jesus’ journey. LENTEN CHALLENGE: Christian Leadership students developed a Lenten Challenge for our school community to consider each day of the Lenten season. Students, faculty and staff who accepted the challenge, either relinquished their phone for a given day or agreed to a morning coffee fast and donate the money they would have spent!

THE GREATER GOOD begins HERE Pope Francis Prep not only guides students in understanding the Catholic faith, but our learning community inspires them to experience the faith in service to others. The motivation to serve is channeled and organized as part of the religious studies program, and is very often pursued as a spontaneous response to learning of a need in our community. Not only are our students encouraged to become aware of opportunities in service to others, but to also recognize that they each hold special gifts to share. These gifts should then be used in honor and service to the greater good.

HONORING OUR LEGACY: In celebration of the Feast Day of Saint Joseph, our Student Advisory Board presented Sister Diane with beautiful flowers and a gift card. Sister Diane placed the flowers in our chapel to share with all of the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

HEAD OF SCHOOL > DR. PAUL HARRINGTON AND DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS ANN RIVERS VOLUNTEERED weekly during a 6-week Junior Achievement program. They taught financial literacy to 6th and 7th graders at our Catholic partner school, St. John the Baptist.

ATHLETIC PRAYERS AND BLESSINGS: A new tradition has begun at Pope Francis Prep whereby our athletic teams gather in the Saint Joseph Chapel to pray and receive a blessing from Fr. Mark prior to a competition. This new tradition will continue with all of our athletic teams. LITURGY SERVICES: Our learning community gathered to mark the beginning of Lent with a beautiful liturgy and offering of ashes. A reminder for us all to use the Lenten season as a time of self-reflection and almsgiving in preparation for the celebration of Easter. Also, through prayer, reflection and an opportunity to take part in the sacrament, our Cardinals continued their Lenten preparations for the celebration of Easter at a special Reconciliation service. 8TH GRADE RETREAT: Students from Christian Leadership spent a day at our partner school, St. Michael’s Academy helping facilitate their 8th grade retreat. It is a blessing to see our students’ leadership commitment to future Cardinals!

ROW CHALLENGE FOR SPRINGFIELD

Cam Dougal ’20 and his teammates gathered pledges and donations in support of their taking on the challenge of rowing for 24 continuous hours! Despite the arduous physical challenge, Cam was proud to support the Springfield Rescue Mission. “I believe their work is humble and critical to improving life for those living in poverty right here in our local community. The Rescue Mission volunteers are truly joyful people who deserve our support in their daily effort to spread kindness and compassion.”

RESCUE MISSION

ERIANNA CORREA ’22 was selected to participate in the YOUth Matter Civics Initiative in collaboration with the Springfield City Library. The 6-week

summer program was designed to get youth civically active in shaping the communities where they live and go to school. At the end of the summer program, Erianna was one of four teens who showed amazing leadership skills and has been selected to lead the next YOUth Matter group in conjunction with the library and its new sponsor, the Hampden County D.A.’s office.

Longtime major league left-hander Chris Capuano officially ended his playing career in 2018, but it didn’t take much time for him

to find a new role in the game. The MLB Players’ Association announced the hiring of Capuano as its director of operations. Capuano brings impressive credentials to his new position. Not only was he a consistent union presence as a player, but Capuano boasts an accomplished educational background. ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the Director of Development Dear Alumni, Family, and Friends, Last year was an incredible year for Pope Francis Preparatory School! Thanks to your support, the year was marked by the opening of our state-of-the-art campus and saw our school community deeply engaged in the rich and rewarding work of learning together. I am honored to continue our commitment to enhancing and growing the School’s legacy of excellence in Catholic secondary education in Western Massachusetts. Our strengths are due in no small part to the generosity of those recognized in the following pages. Your faithfulness to making an investment in our school represents the cornerstone of all the work accomplished daily within our thriving learning community. The Cardinal Fund generates the finances necessary to not only provide the wide range of programs and initiatives offered in support of our core values, but it is vital in keeping the School fiscally sound. In reflection of last year’s charitable giving, we saw a 49% increase in annual giving overall. There is strength in these numbers and they represent the contagious energy, optimism, and collective commitment to our shared future. Development Director, Daniel Fenton CHS ‘09 (R), recognized NHL player, Frank Vatrano (L) by giving him an honorary diploma from Cathedral High School at the Cardinal Classic Golf Tournament in May. Frank left Cathedral prior to graduation to pursue his professional hockey career. A former Boston Bruin, Frank now plays for the Florida Panthers.

It is truly an exciting and formative time at Pope Francis Prep. A time that I know will make a difference to this school forever. I am grateful for your continued commitment and thoughtful support. We are forever blessed by your generosity.

Daniel Fenton, CHS ‘09 Director of Development
