Letter from THE Head of School Dear Friends, As we welcomed our learning community to our incredible new campus last month, we felt a spirit that was very familiar, yet our surroundings were unlike anything we’d seen before! There was an intangible sense that our new school wasn’t looking to chase trends, but to move beyond them and provide an education that is enduring, motivating, and devoted. An education that is reimagined.

We have an incredible opportunity before us. Our school is now a symbol and a message to our students, their families, and the community, that we are most importantly about the future of Catholic education.

It is essential to note, that we remain a school focused on faith formation, intellectual stimulation, innovation, wellness, and the development of the whole person. It is our foundation and will undoubtedly prove to be our strength going forward.

Today, we are fortunate to enjoy a culture of giving from many donors, alumni, parents and friends. One that has provided us with vital financial resources every private school needs to thrive. As we seek guidance from our faith and become energized by the youth and enthusiasm of our students, I can’t help but to acknowledge how we have become an educational beacon that has been transformed and reimagined in ways yet to be experienced!

Class of

2018 Eighty-four graduates

of the Pope Francis High School Class of 2018 celebrated commencement exercises at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield on June 8, 2018. The class was the last to graduate as Pope Francis High School since on July 1, 2018, the school became known as Pope Francis Preparatory School.

Class valedictorian, David Garib and class salutatorian, Brian Campbell addressed their classmates and others in attendance, both sighting the value and significance that a Catholic education had on their lives. David Garib headed to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore this fall and Brian Campbell attends Providence College in Rhode Island.

Both students exemplified the many opportunities afforded a Pope Francis student. David Garib was active in youth ministry at his local parish and in his speech told his classmates, “Our Catholic education has instilled in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit.”

Brian Campbell, a member of the Pope Francis hockey team who saw his team make it to the Super 8 championship at the Boston Garden in March, was also a member of student council. “We made school history in becoming the first team to make it to the Boston Garden,” he said. But perhaps more significant he remembered that, “Every day, we prayed at Pope Francis High School. It’s a crucial part of who we are as a school.”

Head of School, Dr. Paul Harrington provided commencement remarks for the Class of 2018. “I believe that you are well-equipped to face any challenge.

Throughout our year together, I have seen

that you can be reflective, prayerful, and compassionate,” Dr. Harrington said. He went on to add, “In addition to our core school values, your class shares values that our society needs: a dedication to service; a genuine concern and respect for the environment; an appreciation of different views; and an understanding of the importance of collaboration across and within communities.” He closed his remarks by asking the Class to keep in touch with one another, and to pray for future Cardinals who will sit in their seat one day, wear their number as they play a sport, or face similar experiences as a Pope Francis student.

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno shared a congratulatory message that held special significance, as his youngest daughter Chiarina was among the graduates.

Springfield Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski presented the students with their diplomas. He told them to always follow the example of their namesake, Pope Francis. “In the spirit of the name of the high school, I think if we follow the example set for us by Pope Francis, our graduates will stay close to God,” Bishop Rozanski said. “Pope Francis is a man of prayer, a man of service, a man dedicated to the church. I pray for that for our high school graduates as they go off into different fields of work and college.”

Mrs. Lori Fenton

Mrs. Wendy Harrington

is a welcomed addition to the front office staff as our new administrative assistant for student services. Prior to joining Pope Francis, she served as an assistant to the dean of the business school at a local university where she brought over 18 years experience as a legal assistant. Mrs. Fenton is a graduate of Southwick High School, Southwick, MA and Holyoke Community College, Holyoke, MA where she earned an associate degree in business. She resides in Feeding Hills with her husband, Tom. They have two children, Colin CHS ’10 and Jenna.

With a B.A. from California State University, Fullerton, a background in education, and a passion for photography and design, Wendy is a perfect fit for this part-time role. Wendy is married to our head of school, Dr. Paul Harrington, and they have a five-year-old daughter, Grace, and a cocker spaniel mix named Simba. When not on campus capturing “a day in the life” Wendy enjoys cooking, gardening, volunteering at Grace’s school, and visiting family and friends in California.

Ms. Susanne Markus

is a familiar face at Pope Francis. Having served as a substitute teacher at our school in the past, we are pleased that he is able to join our math department full-time this year. After earning a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and biology from American International College, Mr. Kopec began a career in the biotech field learning new techniques in biological research and mathematical analysis of experimental designs. He shifted his career focus to include teaching after completing an immersion Master of education program at the University of Massachusetts.

He has since completed postgraduate coursework in mathematics extension from Lesley College and in physics from American International College. Prior to joining Pope Francis Prep, Mr. Kopec taught math and robotics within the Springfield public school district and as an adjunct professor for American International College.

joined Pope Francis Preparatory School as a French teacher in August 2018. She holds a B.A. degree in French and Education from Wells College, Aurora, NY. She spent one year of her four years at Wells College at the l’Université de Strasbourg, in Strasbourg, France. After her studies at Wells College, Ms. Markus completed graduate work at S.U.N.Y. Albany in French literature, and she obtained a teaching certificate from the state of New York. In addition, she holds certification from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and she obtained certification for Spanish at Elms College, Chicopee, MA. Her teaching career encompasses having taught French and Spanish for 20 years at Ludlow High School, Ludlow, MA. Ms. Markus is multi-lingual, speaking not only French and Spanish but also her native Hungarian and a basic level of German. In addition, she has traveled and lived abroad in Europe for extended periods. She looks forward to share her enthusiasm for foreign languages with her new students at Pope Francis Preparatory School.

Mr. Daniel Fenton

A native of Westfield, MA, Mr. Fenton is a graduate of Cathedral High School followed by receiving both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from American International College. His professional experience working in social services and college athletics will prove to be a strong foundation for leading the School’s efforts in securing support from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations. Mr. Fenton takes pride in his own Catholic education and hopes to share his enthusiasm for the continued growth of Pope Francis Preparatory School with a variety of constituency. His knowledge of strategic planning and cultivation of relationships now brings excitement to the Pope Francis community. In addition to his responsibilities to institutional advancement, Mr. Fenton, a former collegiate athlete, serves as the head varsity baseball coach and junior varsity hockey coach for Cardinal athletics.

joined Pope Francis Preparatory School as the Latin teacher in August 2018.

Previously, he taught Latin, Greek, and Classics for five years at the college level and for the past 17 years at another Roman Catholic college preparatory school in Massachusetts. He holds an A.B. in Classics from Princeton University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan. He has also studied at the American Academy in Rome and American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He is a member of the National Greek Exam Committee and an experienced advisor for Model United Nations and Classics Club. He served on the international Faculty Advisor Discussion Panel at the Harvard Model United Nations Conference in 2015.

His mentorship is evident as one of his former students recently won both the National Greek Exam Scholarship and the National Latin Exam Scholarship. He is a Cardinals baseball fan - both of St. Louis and now, Pope Francis Preparatory School!

Mrs. Carol Lisella

Mrs. Meaghan Gadbois

has returned to her roots as our new religious studies faculty member. She began her teaching career over 10 years ago teaching religion at our legacy school, Holyoke Catholic High School. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in business management from Springfield College and a master of applied theology from Elms College. She resides in Connecticut with her husband Anthony and their German Shepard, Jackson.

They have two grown children, Jennifer and Tony. She loves the outdoors and traveling to Vermont and especially to Colorado to visit their daughter. She is thrilled to be back “home” at Pope Francis Prep and notes that she enjoys passing her love of God and being witness to students growing in their relationship with God and each other.

joined our math department in August 2018. She is a graduate of Greenfield High School, Greenfield, MA and Westfield State University. Meaghan currently resides in Westfield with her husband Barry, their daughter Abigail, and their dog, Mackey.

When she’s not teaching or learning, Meaghan loves to travel. She enjoys the company of her family and spends her summers at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

is the new School Media and IT Specialist. She received a bachelor’s degree in computer information technology from Elms College and a master’s degree in communications and information management from Bay Path University.

Prior to joining PFPS, she spent ten years teaching graphic and web design at Elms College and five years working for a local web design company. In her spare time, she can usually be found doing various artistic hobbies such as sewing, pottery or drawing.

Originally from New York, she earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and French from Cornell University and a master of arts in education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She has taught language and music to students at both the elementary and secondary school levels. She resides in Westfield and serves as the music minister at Holy Family Church in Russell, MA.

Microsoft 1:1 Initiative

Learning Reimagined

Sparking the natural curiosity of young people and enabling them to be successful both in school and in their future work environments is an important part of a Pope Francis Prep education.

As the world moves rapidly through the twenty-first century, there is an urgent need to realign, rethink, and reinvent educational practices to meet the needs of modern learners, essentially reimagine how students understand new concepts.

The challenge becomes how to find an approach that is agile, adaptable, and in tune with young people’s lives outside of the classroom. For Pope Francis Prep, that challenge is being met by the Microsoft 1:1 Initiative.

We believe that academic success requires the ability to think, communicate and collaborate effectively. The use of technology is integral in providing highly customized, interactive learning experiences that support these requirements. For the 2018-2019 academic year, all Pope Francis students were issued a Microsoft Surface Pro for their use as long as they remain enrolled at Pope Francis Prep. This initiative ensures that each student has the tools necessary to do the increasingly collaborative and dynamic work that is at the heart of a Pope Francis education where we seek to take the best of in-class practices and complement them with the best in technological learning strategies.

We believe that academic success requires the ability to think, communicate and collaborate effectively.�

The 1:1 initiative takes into consideration that technology can help improve teaching and learning when used as one piece of a larger solution. Simply giving each student a laptop, tablet or other device may not typically produce exceptional learning growth, unless you also adjust the teaching, collaboration, and assessment taking place. At Pope Francis, we are working daily to cultivate leadership and a culture of innovation among our learning community, to build capacity for technology; and to transform the learning environment to support these new initiatives. With this substantial shift in our pedagogy, we are able to recognize the impact these changes will have on how our students learn, the ways in which they are interacting with the world, and the positive outcomes achievable with 1:1 learning.

Community

a day in the Life Pope Francis

is committed to developing and nurturing the whole student, whether in the classroom, on the field, or out in the community. We strive to develop students who are respectful and responsible role models inside the school and out. No matter where Pope Francis students find themselves, they are ambassadors of the school.

Through extracurricular activities, Pope Francis students have an opportunity to learn and develop beyond the classroom. The goals of these activities align with our school mission to develop faith-based leaders.

We are proud and honored to help each of our students realize their full potential; our goal is to prepare them for successful post-secondary lives as future leaders.

Pope Francis Players, under the direction of Mr. John Anziano, CHS ’91, presented the musical “Into the Woods” with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The musical intertwined the plots of several Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault fairy tales.

The main characters were taken from “Little Red Riding Hood”, “Jack and the Beanstalk”, “Rapunzel”, and “Cinderella”, as well as several others. The musical was tied together by a story involving a childless baker, portrayed by Seth Mastriani ’19 and his wife, played by Elizabeth Bess ’18 and their quest to begin a family despite their interaction with a witch, played by Gianna Branco ’18, who had placed a curse on them. The show ran for three days, May 11, 12, and 13.

Part of PFPS’ varied fine arts program, the Pope Francis Players perform twice a year.

arts Thanks to our continued partnership with The Community Music School in Springfield, students participate in a music program for brass, woodwind and string instruments,

piano, guitar, percussion and vocals.

With the added benefit of our brand new acoustically sound music room, students are now able to add this enrichment offering to their regular course schedule.

Students from Mr. Ilson’s Illustration class and Ms. Boudreau - Kinsey’s Advanced Art class traveled to Smith College Museum of Art and greenhouses last spring. The trip offered the students an opportunity to practice as agents of meaning-making by gathering evidence from the works of art (visual texts) to support their interpretation.

Also, visiting the beautiful greenhouses helped to remind them that spring was on its way!

Students in Mrs. Perreault’s health and wellness classes created PSA video entries for the Annual Stop the Swerve event hosted by Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni CHS ’98 in April. Their PSA videos were awarded $2,000 in prize money to be used to support school technology. The school purchased digital teleprompter equipment and extra stylus pens for the Microsoft 1:1 initiative.

Additionally, her classes were part of a national emergency training initiative called “Stop the Bleed”. Medical staff from Baystate Hospital, including Ida Konderwicz, RN CHS’78 taught our students how to pack a wound and place a tourniquet to “stop the bleed” in a life-threatening situation. Pope Francis Prep is the FIRST school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to have students trained in this way!

Community

Mr. Decoteau’s AP English students welcomed poet Jack Powers to Pope Francis this past spring. The visit coincided with April’s designation as National Poetry Month. Poems written by the students were shared with Mr. Powers and he selected two winners prior to his visit - Joe Fernandes ’18 and Katie Boutin’19. The third winner, Jenna Ross’19, received a special citation for the art class’ book of poems and Haiko inspired artwork.

academics Mr. Salloum’s engineering class started this academic year by testing their design prototype and the height of our new stairwell by dropping an egg, water balloon and nails strategically packed and dropped from the 3rd floor. Some survived the fall.

Others, it’s back to the drawing board!

National Honor Society members supported the Springfield Rescue Mission throughout last spring by making over 100 sandwiches and delivered to those in need.

Also, NHS students collected toiletries to support those in need.

The Student Council sponsored a spring food drive called the Cardinal Red Hat Challenge which added much needed donations to Springfield’s Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen pantry shelves.

The “Red Hat Challenge” recognized the 5th anniversary of the selection of Pope Francis by the College of Cardinals.

The winning homerooms earned the coveted RED HAT – the biretta worn by members of the College of Cardinals when they meet to choose the new pope. The “Red Hat” challenge was a meaningful way of recognizing the spirit and work of Pope Francis in the students’ lives.

Brendan Nehmer ’18 received the Amo “Betts” Bessone Award as Western Mass.

Hockey’s Most Valuable Player, and Jacob King’18 received the Eddie Shore Award

for Top Defenseman. Jon Tavella ’19 and Max Cocchi ’19 were also recognized by MassLive’s sports writer Conor Ryan. The top coach’s award, the Joseph Buchholz Coach of the Year Award, went to our very own, Coach Brian Foley.

The girls spring track team finished 4th at the West/Central Mass Championships (out of 53 teams).

Alexandra Gonet won 3 individual WMass titles at the WMass Division 2 championships (in the 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and long jump) and won 2 individual titles at the West/Central Championships (in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles). Tanner Longo, Emily

Boutin and Alexandra Gonet each qualified for the all-state championships, with Tanner setting a new school record in the high jump (5’4”) and Emily setting a new school record in the mile (5:15). Alexandra Gonet also qualifed for the New England Championships, where she finished 10th in the 300-meter hurdles and 6th in the 100-meter hurdles.

Of note, the baseball team qualified for the WMass Division 1 tournament and made it all the way to the championship before falling to Longmeadow by a score of 5-0.

The softball team made the WMass tournament for the first time in 3 years, losing in the first round to Mt Everett.

The boys spring track team finished 6th at the Western Mass Division 2 championships, and were led by Tamil Tate, who finished first in the high jump, and by Tevin Early, who finished third in the discus.

focus on Faith As a Catholic school, faith plays an important part in the lives of all our students. We offer an education strengthened by faith, prayer and service to others. Every student is required to take a religious studies classes and prayer is an integral part of these classes. Students learn the value of prayer in their lives through practice, meditation, contemplation, music, journaling, traditional prayers and service. Our goal is to challenge each individual to grow in their personal relationship with God, while learning about faith, the Church, and the world in which we live.

More than two years of hard work and very detailed planning resulted in a successful first week at the new Pope Francis Preparatory School on Wendover Road.

The new $55 million, 122,000 square foot facility opened its doors on Monday, Aug. 27, to more than 335 students.

Springfield Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski celebrated the first Mass in the state-of-the-art theater, encouraging students to make the most out of their Catholic school education.

Bishop Rozanski told iObserve, “We began the year with a Mass, asking for God’s blessings and the Holy Spirit’s guidance for all our students. May this year be filled with

learning, joy and enthusiasm for every subject that helps us to grow and mature in God’s love.”

By all accounts, the first week went smoothly, although it took students a few days to acclimate themselves to the spacious campus.

For many, including faculty and staff, it was the culmination of a long faith-filled journey. English faculty member Jonathan Decoteau said, “I’m overwhelmed emotionally – in a wonderful way. Throughout the last seven years, it has been encouraging to have the support of my colleagues, our students and their families and the diocese, as we stepped forward together, creating an amazing space and opportunity for Catholic education.”

“We have an incredible opportunity before us, and this new facility is a symbol and a message to our students, families, and community … that this place is about the future of Catholic education,” Paul Harrington, Head of School said.

The students also reflected on the uniqueness of the new school environment. “I think the new building is an incredible learning environment that will push us to do even better,” said junior Bryant Keeney.

“I love it, especially the athletic fields. Having new teachers and an amazing building is going to be a great learning experience, too,” said Conor Sears, also a junior.

“What a huge improvement! I love having a real campus and being part of this new school,” added junior Emily Boutin.

This academic year, students at Pope Francis Prep will experience the benefit of having two Campus Chaplains. Fr. Mark Mengel, appointed by Bishop Mitchell Rozanski, will serve to support the faith of the learning community. He is scheduled to be on campus each Tuesday assisting the religion classes with organizing a class mass to take place during that period in the chapel. Under his guidance, students will select readings, prepare the liturgy, and then participate in a special class service.

Additionally, Fr. Mengel will be working with the Director of Campus Ministry to provide every club, activity, and sport team with a blessing service throughout the academic year. A new opportunity for Pope Francis Prep, having a Campus Chaplain has immense opportunity for growth in service to the students. Though his official role is slated for just one day per week, Fr. Mengel has already committed more time to the betterment of school life. He has been seen eating lunch with students, at school events such as Parent’s Night, and offering his assistance with developing community service opportunities.

Fr. Michael Kokoskza, Associate Pastor at St. Mary’s Church, Longmeadow will also be available as campus chaplain to students on Thursday mornings throughout the academic year. His primary role will be to say Mass each Thursday prior to the start of morning classes, as well as hear confessions for students, faculty and staff. Though his time is somewhat limited on campus, Fr. Kokoskza has already made himself available in support of students by offering a prayer service in honor and recognition of students celebrating International Peace Day in September.

SERVICE

in service to Others Pope Francis students of all faith traditions are called to live and act in ways that benefit others as well as themselves. The academic and faith teachings at Pope Francis manifest themselves in each student through community service. Students are expected to put their faith into action and further their Gospel teachings; their futures are shaped through their service to others. By giving of themselves to their communities, students are able to become teachers, leaders and healers; interacting with both the people receiving services and the people whose life work is dedicated to helping those in need. There are numerous opportunities for service locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The possibilities for helping others are endless.

During Spring Break 2018, seventeen Pope Francis students and 5 chaperones traveled to Jones County, North Carolina to fulfill a mission of serving others.

They returned exhausted yet lifted by the experiences gained serving a community in need. The timing of the trip was perfect as it occurred during the celebration of National Volunteer Week: April 14 - April 21. We proudly celebrated the power of our student volunteers that week and sent our prayers to those who took the time to share their physical strength, intelligence, and heart with those in need.

Road Less Traveled: Spring Break Serving Others Our students hit the ground running after arriving in Emerald Island, North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Sunday was the first official day of the annual April Spring Break Service trip south, and they accomplished more in one day than most do in a week! They were building benches, spreading topsoil and planting sod to help beautify a local park. They also helped with a very familiar service project - distributing food at a local food bank at the Maysville Methodist Church.

No doubt they felt the gratification that comes from helping others... and the southern sky is just a bonus!

The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others ...

Day 2 of the Spring Break Service Trip to North Carolina brought sunshine and a renewed sense of purpose! Students continued their work at Maysville Park building benches...and it looks like we may have a few more qualified candidates for building theater production sets back home!

Also today, they worked at the Salvation Army doing a real hands on project.

The main task was to refurbish some old chairs. Students chose between creating the distressed look or a matte finish. The process involves stripping and sanding

the metal and applying several coats of paint. Some of the chairs will be sold in the thrift store, while others will be used in the creativity room where local citizens can learn crafts and life skills through programs that the church offers. Amazing work, Pope Francis!

Wednesday 18 Working Together for a Healthy Coast.

Protect. Restore. Preserve.

Today our students worked to build a living shoreline out of recycled oyster shells! The North Carolina Coastal Federation, in partnership with Camp Albemarle, invited volunteers to assist in building this incredible method of shoreline erosion protection. The new oyster reef will protect the shore from erosion and create habitat for hundreds of marine creatures including oysters - all of which help filter and clean the water.

Our student volunteers created and passed along oyster shell bags to be placed in shallow water along the marsh. This project will help promote widespread stewardship of coastal resources - and our students know a thing or two about caring for the environment from their study of Pope Francis’ Ladauto Si! When asked how the trip was going, our Director of Campus Ministry, John Anziano CHS ’91 said, “Meaningful services, wonderful prayers, and deep reflections.” Looks like honoring Earth Day (April 22) had already begun!

After a week of gratifying work, our students were treated to a “free day” of fun and relaxation! Groups headed out to golf, ocean kayaking, or a restful day at the beach.

An Opportunity for Caring, Compassion and Kindness Today our students brought energy and kindness to The Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter and Education Center. This not-for-profit wildlife hospital cares for injured, sick, and orphaned native North Carolina wildlife in a professional and compassionate manner. Their incredible mission is to rehabilitate and release the thousands of animals admitted to the clinic each year and to teach others how to happily and peacefully coexist with wildlife. The center is currently home to owls, vultures, hawks, songbirds, turtles, fish, and water fowl.

Students helped to beautify the grounds, paint the ICU room, and prepped food for the wildlife. A messy and fun day, indeed!

And right here at home, National Honor Society students spent part of their Spring Break assisting Habitat for Humanity. No strangers to hard work - they stayed busy working on a home in Springfield. Power tools - no problem!

Springfield native, Captain Paul C. Spedero Jr., Cathedral class of 1986, was relieved of command for the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in a change of command ceremony aboard ship on August 9, 2018. Captain Spedero assumed command of the Nimitz-class

Martin “Marty” J. Boyle, Cathedral High Class of 2011, works as a certified public accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Marty is also on track to release a studio album with his folk-rock duo, “The New Rockwells”.

Marty and his band mate Benjamin S. Muller will release “Old Familiar Way”, which follows the release of the 2016 debut album, “Live From Carnegie Hall”.

Sarah Truoiolo, CHS class of 2000 won a very competitive election race in East Longmeadow to secure a School Committee seat. Sarah, a native of Springfield, moved to East Longmeadow in 2009. Sarah is a supervisor of Mathematics for the Springfield Public Schools. Sarah noted that her work in the Springfield Public Schools has provided her with a deep understanding of the resources needed by students and teachers to be successful in school.

On Friday of Memorial Day weekend, 2018, 141 Cathedral alumni and friends got together to play golf at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield. Billy Christofori, CHS ’79, organized the tournament. Per usual, the alumni ranged from 1950’s to the last Cathedralgraduating class of 2016. Everyone had a wonderful time socializing before and after golf, with generations crossing paths at every hole. On behalf of all Officer John McCoy, HCHS class of 2012 and a 24-year-old reserve officer for the Holyoke Police Department was photographed alongside former Holyoke Police Officer Edward Wrobleski at the celebration of Edward’s 101st birthday party. The event was held at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke on May 22, 2018.

The caption in the newspaper cited the two as the oldest Holyoke police officer and the youngest!

School, were ordained to the priesthood, with Conventional Franciscans. We celebrate Christopher Dudek, HCHS Class of 2008, and Emanuel Vasconcelos, former teacher and campus minister from CHS, and wish them blessings from the Pope Francis Prep Community to serve God’s people and his holy church.

Frank Furman IV, was ordained a priest, Saturday, June 30, 2018, at St. Michael’s Cathedral celebrated by Springfield Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski.

Father Frank was raised in Easthampton, MA, and is the only child of Frank and JoAnn Furman. Father Furman received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee MA.,

and is now in Rome finishing the second of a two-year licentiate in moral theology at the Dominican-run Angelicum University. Father Furman will return to the Springfield Diocese for a permanent assignment following his studies. New Pope Francis Prep Building Opens with Ribbon-Cutting

after students started classes at the new

Pope Francis Preparatory School, officials gathered outside the new $54.5 million building to celebrate its opening.

The controversial choice — made after at least five years of debate — to merge Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic high schools to create the new school was the right one to ensure Western Massachusetts students will continue to get a Catholic education, Joshua R. Sears, a senior at the school, told the group of invited guests.

He and classmate Rachael Shannon talked

about how grateful they are for the big and little things the new school has to offer: A parking lot near the building instead of a block away, new science and engineering labs, nearby athletic fields and a permanent place to call home. “There is something special about a Catholic school, though, where they do not only care about academics and athletics,” Sears

said. “Every day the faculty strives to build our character and make us better people.

They strive to have God be a part of our everyday lives and that is a special thing.”

chairwoman of the school’s Board of Trustees, and Paul Harrington, the head of the school, also spoke at the event. The ribbon cutting was followed by tours of the school. But the long controversy about the fate of the former Cathedral High School, which dragged on for years after the building on Surry Road was destroyed by a tornado June 1, 2011, and brought bitter feelings especially from alumni and parents of students, could not be avoided during the ceremony. Rozanski talked about the “many years of planning” finally coming together to bring a day of joy for the school. “It was an arduous path.

We had a number of meetings with (then) Bishop (Timothy) McDonnell and Bishop Rozanski ... wasn’t that fun,” said Mayor Domenic Sarno, whose two daughters attended Cathedral High School when it was moved from placeto-place after the tornado. Neal joked about he and Sarno swapping roles of playing the “bad cop” and “the diplomat” during those meetings.

After the school was damaged so badly it was determined it could not be used, Cathedral students first spent several years in a rented elementary school in Wilbraham. As enrollment at Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic High School continued to decline Rozanski, as the

new bishop of Springfield, made the decision to merge the two schools. Even then students spent at least two years together at the Holyoke Catholic High School building in Chicopee – which has no gymnasium, auditorium, parking or playing fields – before finally moving to a permanent home on the former site of Cathedral High School. The school was built with the help of $39 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency money. Neal said that money was designated under the national principal to help the “American family” after

hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters devastate communities across the country.

He also talked about his experiences teaching at what was then Cathedral High School so long ago that his original students are ready to retire and especially thanked the nuns, mainly members of the Sisters of St. Joseph, for their long dedication to teaching local students and then heading to homeless shelters and American Indian reservations to help during the summer. “They saw a potential in every child...no matter where that child came from,” Neal said.

Preparatory School was celebrated August 21 as the school’s St. Joseph Chapel was dedicated and blessed by Springfield Bishop Mitchell T. Rozanski.

During a special ceremony attended by more than 50 Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, many of whom had taught in the legacy schools of Pope Francis Prep, the sisters were praised for their years of sacrifice and dedication to teaching thousands of high school students.

For more than 130 years, the sisters staffed the former Sacred Heart, Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Jerome, Holyoke Catholic and Cathedral high schools.

In his remarks to those attending the dedication, Paul Harrington, head of school for Pope Francis, tallied the years of service and number of sisters who served in each school: 1887-1963 – 84 sisters served Sacred Heart – totaling 389 sister-years of service 1902-1963 – 83 sisters served Rosary High School – totaling 463 sister years of service 1912-1963 – 85 sisters served St. Jerome’s – totaling 316 sister-years of service 1963-2016 – 78 sisters served Holyoke Catholic – totaling 510 sister-years of service 1884-2016 – 261 sisters served Cathedral High School – totaling 3,036 sister-years of service In all he said there were 434 Sisters of St. Joseph who collectively served 4,714 sister-years.

A permanent tribute to the sisters is the inscription of the name of every sister who has ever served in one of the legacy schools on the windows of the chapel entrance.

Sister Angela Deady taught at Holyoke Catholic from 1974-1988. “I’m a graduate of Cathedral High School, so when I saw the windows I was looking for those outstanding teachers that had inspired me not only to be a teacher but to be a religious to join them and so I really think it’s appropriate and it will be a blessing for this building to have this chapel dedicated to St. Joseph,” said Sister Deady.

Sister Alice Kenney said she began her teaching career at the high school building nicknamed the “Gas House” on Elliot Street in Springfield. When the “first” Cathedral High School was built on Elliot Street, Sister Kenney taught there and was later principal of Cathedral. She said she was moved beyond words, seeing the names of sisters who had taught at the schools.

While the bishop read, I couldn’t take my eyes off it,” she said. “There were older

sisters, really. And I’m old. I’m 90. But I’m looking at all those old people that I didn’t even know were part of Holyoke Catholic and part of Cathedral.”

Harrington presented Sister Joan Ryzewicz, president of the Sisters of St. Joseph, with a leather-bound book inscribed with the name of every Sister of St. Joseph with her years of service and school, to be displayed in the new St. Joseph Chapel for all students, alumni, and visitors to enjoy. In her address to the guests gathered for the dedication, Sister Ryzewicz said the chapel was “truly amazing.”

Our sisters not only poured out love and dedication,” she said, noting that she was a student at the former Cathedral High School. “They poured blood, sweat and tears.” “We daughters of Joseph are delighted that this chapel will carry the name of our patron, St. Joseph. He was gentle and he was strong – probably what every teacher needs to be,” she said.

Greetings!

Upon entering Pope Francis Prep, I felt a spirit that was somehow very familiar, yet I was seeing the school for the very first time.

Beyond the remarkable structure, I sensed that this new school was going to represent something more than the latest reflection of 21st century learning but would be a place where Catholic education could be reimagined.

As a proud graduate of a Catholic education, I am excited to be part of the vision for a reimagined faith-based education in Western Massachusetts.

Primarily, my role as the director of development will be to lead the School’s efforts in encouraging and securing financial support to sustain the health and growth of this amazing new school!

But because I know first-hand the blessing of a Catholic education, I will also be working to ensure that Pope Francis Preparatory School fulfills its mission by providing students the opportunity to reimagine their goals by learning to love wisdom.

I will be seeking your support of our efforts to encourage students to reimagine their place in the world, where the values of respect, integrity, and resilience will extend well beyond the beauty of our campus. I will be inviting you to support us in being a school that allows students to reimagine their beliefs, where principles of life and faith will foster intellect and character. I will share the stories of how Pope Francis Prep students are reimagining ways to ignite change that will spark the fires of innovation, leading to a better future for us all.
