Letter from the Director of Development

Dear Alumni, Family, and Friends,

Thank you for your support of Pope Francis Preparatory School, which continues to have a significant impact on the students of today and tomorrow.

This year, Pope Francis Prep was able to make considerable strides. We set records with over $440,000 raised for the Cardinal Fund and a phenomenal $2,936,117 raised in total giving. We were fortunate enough to have increased Cardinal Fund giving efforts by 25% and partnered with over 1,100 benefactors to support our mission. In addition to our annual success, our endowment portfolio increased to over $16,000,000, providing our school community with over $600,000 in annual operational support and scholarships. Your annual generosity, combined with an incredible investment portfolio, provides us with a foundation to make decisions that benefit our outstanding students today and into the future.

Pope Francis Prep continues in its strengths because of the support and leadership of many. Dr. Paul Harrington and the Board of Directors continue to provide a clear vision to ensure that Pope Francis Prep remains a top-notch, premier Catholic school for years to come. This clear vision is accompanied by an exceptional administrative team, talented faculty and staff, dedicated parents, inspiring students, and supportive alumni. This collective community provides a level of trust for our most generous benefactors to make meaningful and significant investments in our most deserving students.

As a proud alum entering my fifth year leading the school’s fundraising efforts, I continue to be inspired by our steady growth. I look forward to working with each of you to ensure Pope Francis Prep continues to prosper as we keep building on the successes of our legacy schools. The John Joseph and Richard A. Hickman Memorial Endowment Tuition Assistance Fund was established by John Joseph and Richard A. Hickman. The fund is awarded to students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need. Endowment Balance: $1,975,950.64

The Philip H. and Clare E. Ryan Pope Francis Prep School Endowment Fund for Tuition Assistance was established by Philip H. Ryan. The fund is awarded to students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School and shows financial need. Endowment Balance: $1,212,408.70

The Reverend Andrew F. Sullivan Donor-Restricted Scholarship Endowment Fund was established anonymously. The fund is awarded to students that show financial need, with preference given to students from single-parent households.

The Gunnery Sgt. Thomas J. Sullivan Scholarship Fund was established in 2018 by the Sullivan Family. The fund is awarded to students who show financial need, are community service oriented, and show strong moral character. Preference is given to students from Springfield’s East Forest Park neighborhood. Endowment Balance: $60,342.18

The Marguerite Hogan Waage Class of 1928 Scholarship Fund was established by Marguerite Hogan Waage. The fund is awarded to students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need.

The Shirley Pratt Memorial Scholarship for Tuition Assistance was established in 2018 by the children of Shirley Pratt. The fund is awarded to students from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish that demonstrate a high level of literacy and show financial need.

The Reverend Joseph P. Quinlan Endowment Tuition Assistance Fund was established by the friends of Rev. Joseph P. Quinlan, former rector of Cathedral High School. The fund is awarded to students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need. Endowment Balance: $9,700.16

The Nicholas and Judith Fiorentino Family Endowment Tuition Assistance Fund was established by Nicholas and Judith Fiorentino. The fund is awarded to students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need. Endowment Balance: $6,673.93

SPECIALLY DESIGNATED FUNDS

These non-endowed specially designated funds support students in the form of financial aid. Annual disbursements reflect the fiscal year 2023 actuals. The O’Connor Family Fund was established in December 2020 by the O’Connor family in memory of Thomas ’48 and Mary (Sullivan) ’48 O’Connor. The fund is awarded to up to twenty-four students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need.

Projected Annual Disbursement: $72,000

The Brian W. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship Fund is awarded to multiple students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need and participate in athletics.

Projected Annual Disbursement: $30,800

The John F. Johnson ’57 Scholarship Fund was established in 2021 by Marguerite C. Johnson ’57 in memory of her husband John F. Johnson. The fund is awarded to multiple students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need and participate in athletics.

Projected Annual Disbursement: $10,000

ABC Longmeadow Fund is awarded to a student of color each academic year attending Pope Francis Preparatory school that lives in Hampden County. The award recipient must initially be an incoming 9th grader who demonstrates financial need and academic merit.

Projected Annual Disbursement: $7,000

The Ernest J. Gelinas Jr. ’57 Scholarship Fund was established in March 2021 by Judith A Gelinas ’57 in memory of her husband Ernest J. Gelinas Jr. The fund is awarded to two students, one male and one female, attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need.

Projected Annual Disbursement: $5,000

The Howlett Family Scholarship Fund was established in February 2022 by the Howlett family in memory of Kate ’86 and Brian ’88 Howlett. The fund is awarded to two students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need.

Projected Annual Disbursement: $4,000

The Lumb Family Scholarship was established in 2008 by Rev. Francis X. Sullivan. The scholarship is in honor of Richard D. Lumb ’68, Mary Judith Lumb ’69, and Barbara Jane Lumb ’71. The fund is awarded to students attending Pope Francis Preparatory School that show financial need.
