Santa takes a few minutes to rest and relax at The Red Door during his trek all across town to see all the things that would make perfect Christmas gifts. Cindy Lou Who and the Nutcracker are the hottest themes of Christmas this year

here was a time when Christmas meant silver and gold and red and green. Trees were mainly green because they were cut live and most tensil came in silver, gold, red, blue and green. Long silver icicles played a heavy role in trimming out the tree.

The Christmas season also centered around the tree. That was the main event. But today, folks decorate everything from the back porch to the bathroom to have a little bit, or even a whole lot of Christmas in each room of the house.

A short chat with Redele Sewell gave us a good run down of what is the hot thing to decorate with this Christmas season.

“This year everybody loves themed trees,” she said. “Nutcrackers are a big thing this year. The Harley Quinn ribbon is one of the fan favorites.”

Harley Quinn ribbon is the black and white diamond patterned ribbon that goes well with the Nutcrackers.

The Grinch colors continue to take center stage for this holiday season.

“They are bringing in Cindy Lou Who to add some whimsey this year,” she noted.

This includes the hot pinks, oranges, gold “all those fun and funky looking things.”

Another color that is trending is “navy with royal blue and gold and sage green,” she said.

In the category of themed trees Redele said one lady wanted the candy land game as the central theme of her tree.

“Family heirloom ornaments also are something that people use to create the color scheme of their tree.”

When you go about decorating your house here are some good rules to apply.

First and foremost, remove clutter. It’s important to declutter a space prior to introducing holiday elements in order to create a clean and organized look. Store additional decorations and knickknacks until after the holiday season. My mama was always about this. We had to clean the living room before we could put the tree up. That was a great incentive to get the floor swept and furniture dusted.

Choose your theme and color palette. Consider a specific style of decorating, whether it’s traditional, minimalist, country, or even winter wonderland. Then select a few coordinating colors to complement the theme and existing items in your home. Pick up these items as they become available in stores, as holiday merchandise often goes quickly.

Focus on a few key areas like tables, doorways and mantles to create the most visual interest. This also makes decorating more manageable.

Rely on the rule of thirds. When grouping decorative items together on shelves and tables, threes often look best.

Start with lights. It’s often easier to decorate by beginning with lights first, and then weaving additional decorations into the mix.

Build on lights with garlands and accent items.

Less is often more. Keep the decorating simple. A few elements here and there can have a much more effective impact than several things that draw attention away from one another. When taking out holiday decorations this year, use it as an opportunity to assess and cull the collection, which will make things easier next year.

Christmas decorating is as diverse as the person who is putting the decorations out. Make sure you decorate with what you think is most important. Here are a few ideas you can do to make your holidays in your home merrier.

Wreaths

Wreaths are one of the simplest ways to dress up windows, doors or other areas of a home. These decorative items can be made from various materials. Evergreen boughs are one of the more traditional, but there’s also colorful garlands, flowers or even ribbon that can be wrapped to make a wreath.

Lights

Lights are integral parts of both Christian and Jewish holiday celebrations. Lights adorn homes to represent Christ being the Light of the World. In Judaism, the lighting of eight candles for Chanukah represents how a small amount of Temple oil miraculously burned for eight days and nights. Filling a home with artificial lights or candles adds a festive touch to dark winter evenings.

Advent Calendar

While it is called an advent calendar and traditionally ties into the time preceding Christmas, anyone can utilize an advent “countdown” calendar as they anticipate the arrival of Christmas Day. There are different iterations of advent calendars, from chocolate calendars to decorative ones featuring doors behind which there are whimsical figurines. Kids may even want to get involved in making homemade calendars.

Poinsettias

Poinsettias come in a variety of colors, but red is the hue of choice for holiday decorating. Perhaps surprisingly. poinsettias are tropical plants.

The “flowers” you see on the plants aren’t flowers at all. They’re modified leaves called bracts. If you take good care of poinsettias, they even can be planted outdoors for the summer.

Boughs and Branches

One of the easiest ways to add a festive touch to a home for the holidays is with items that likely can be scavenged from outdoors. Take a hike and gather some evergreen boughs, tree branches, pine cones, and holly sprigs, which can be turned into garlands, wreaths or centerpieces.

With a little white speckle paint, you can give them a snow-covered look.

So however you choose to decorate your home involve the family and enjoy turning your home to memories your children and grandchildren will never forget.

I

t is easy to let Santa Claus and Christmas trees and mistletoe take the place of the true meaning of Christmas. Nothing can truly take the place of experiencing the reason we have Christmas is the birth of God’s Son, Jesus.

For those who want to focus back on the spiritual side of this special time of year, take your Bible out and read the historical events that happened all those long years ago when God came in human flesh.

The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both say that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant by the Holy Spirit, because she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted

by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth.

As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

The Birth of Jesus

Luke 2:1-20 1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.

3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.

11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”

16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.

17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child.

18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

The Wisemen Come Matthew 1:18-24

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother

Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

Matthew 2:1-15

1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of

Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

5 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: 6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’ ” 7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.

8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” All readings are from the New King James Version

We all love the little jingles that advertisers come up with the get their point across especially at Christmas time. Perhaps the most memorable commercials we remember are around the holiday season because that is when we slow down to appreciate them; and the children want to see what’s advertised so they will know what to request from Santa. I remember as a teen the first Christmas commercials played on Thanksgiving day. Now the Christmas commercials come before October is over. So a random check of what commercials people remember was made about town.

H

ave you ever enjoyed curling up with someone and reading a good Christmas book or story? I can remember sitting next to my cousin Vaughn Long and listening to him reading to me The Night Before Christmas by Clement C. Moore.

The light from the old standing lamp beside the couch surrounded us with its warmth while his voice rose and fell in cadence with the lines of the magical poem.

Why not start a new Christmas tradition this year by reading books with Christmas themes? There are a litany of books to choose from.

One of the best loved books is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. This story has been told and re-told in so many ways, but you can’t beat the original, written as the humorous man wrote it himself.

My favorite line in this tale is when Dickens said that Marley was as dead as a doornail. Then he followed it up with the fact that he figured a coffin nail would be the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. Little tidbits of humor like that make the classic worth your time to sit down and read either yourself or aloud to your children or grandchildren.

Charles Schultz brought the Peanuts gang to the Christmas parade of classics in 1965 with his first printing of A Charlie Brown Christmas. The classic Peanuts holiday story also appeared as a cartoon which aired December 9, 1965. This classic came out of desperation when a producer wanted an animated Christmas special.

Schultz story line was of Snoopy trying to win a Christmas lights contest while Lucy named herself Christmas queen, Charlie Brown went in search of the real meaning of Christmas. It was found when Linus simply quoted the passage from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 2. “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold I bring you tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss is another story that has come to life on theater and tv screens since the Christmas of 1972. I remember seeing it the first time it was shown on the television. My sister and I loved the scene when his dog, Max started down the hill pulling the sleigh and the speeding vehicle overtook the poor dog, then you see him sitting at the back of it waving at the Grinch. Now Boris Karloff did a wonderful job narrating this timeless treasure, but you should sit down and enjoy reading it to your own little ‘who’ children with all the wit and humor in which it was written.

Another book that has gained its own fame through the magic of cinema is The Polar Express. It was written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. Critically acclaimed and praised for its detailed illustration and calm relaxing storyline, the book follows the adventures of a young boy who was skeptical of Santa Claus and discovered a train stopping at his house one night headed for the North Pole. Written in 1985, the book celebrates 40 years of magical story telling. The movie came out in 2004, and became an instant classic.

So lets turn the page so to speak and talk about some lesser known Christmas Classics that perhaps aren’t on the big screen but will be some good books to read.

The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams Bianco. This sweet tale is of a rabbit that was sewn from velveteen and given to small boy at Christmas who likes the other toys that are new and modern. The British children’s book has been adapted into plays and film. It was first published in Harper’s Bazaar in 1921 with illustrations by her daughter.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever written by Barbara Robinson follows the tales of a family named Herdman who has six misbehaving children who end up in the town’s Sunday school Christmas pageant and end up teaching the town what Christmas is all about.

There is this little known book called The Spirit of Christmas written in 1905 by Henry Van Dyke. It is written to remind people to ponder what Christmas is all about and value the compassion of the season. Almost a hint of Dickens style writing it is full of little nuggets that can be read and understood by children and adults alike. It has prayers at the end to make one think.

J.R.R. Tolkien, the master literary crafter of the Hobbit and other tales write a book called Letters from Father Christmas. This is a collection of letters written and illustrated by the author over some twenty years for his children from Father Christmas. They were released by the Tolkien estate in September of 1976 after he passed away. They were written starting in 1920 when his oldest son was three. Each Christmas Tolkien would write a letter about Father Christmas’ travels and misadventures.

And for the smaller children there is the story of The Littlest Angel which, incidentally was written by Charles Tazwell in 1939 as a Christmas story for radio. It follows the story of a young boy who gets to heaven and just can’t fit in with the others. When the birth of the Christ Child is announced he has his own special gift.

It is purely fictional but a great little read.

The Little Match Girl written by Hans Christian Anderson is a short story that takes you to after Christmas, set on a freezing New Year’s Eve. Some would consider it a sad story but reality is blended with the visions of a child who is alone in the world. This little story was first published 180 years ago in December 1845.

A Little Princess is another great book to snuggle up to. Written by Frances Hodgson Burnett it was first published in a book in 1905. It was a serialized book in the St. Nicholas Magazine in December of 1887. It is the story of a child who was doted on by her father Captain Ralph Crewe while he was raising her in India where he was stationed with the British Army. She was sent to a boarding school in England because the climate was harsh. She became destitute while she was there because the father died and all his holdings were gone. And then a man from India befriended her. Read the story for yourself. A version of this was on the silver screen in the late 1930s played by Shirley Temple. The screen writers strayed from the original story line, but the antics of Sara Crewe will keep you in stitches.

So there is enough literature to keep you busy through the whole month of December and beyond.

The Christmas songs we all love to sing

t seems like there’s a song for every season and Christmas has a rich tradition of songs that are sung. Young and old alike can be heard singing or humming their favorite Christmas carol sometimes in the middle of June. Did you know that caroling and singing them dates back to the thirteenth century? It didn’t always involve singing, it was simply visiting, called “wassailing.” People went from house to house giving out well wishes during the cold months and they were given a hot thick spiced beverage to keep them warm. (Hint: the song Here We Go a Wassailing). Singing didn’t start at Christmas until St. Fancis of Assisi started songs of well wishes in his Christmas services encouraging his church to embrace music. Collections of Christmas songs were written down and published in 1582.

What are some of our favorite Christmas carols and songs?

The most famous of them is “Silent Night”—or “Stille Nacht” in the original German—was created because Josef Mohr needed a carol for worship that could be easily sung without an organ.

On Christmas Eve of 1818, Mohr visited France Gruber who was the organist and his school teacher, with a poem he had written a few years earlier. Gruber quickly arranged the song to be played on a guitar with a choir because the church organ was broken.

That evening at Midnight Mass, Gruber strapped on his guitar and led the congregation at St. Nicholas in the first rendition of Silent Night. And hit has been a Christmas classic ever since.

“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” was written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow against the back drop of the Civil War. After he lost his wife to a tragic death and his son was wounded in the war.

Despite all the hopelessness in the world, the sound of the Christmas bells ringing stirred something in his soul and he wrote a poem of faith, hope, and the triumph of righteousness. It turned into a Christmas carol that has soothed the hearts of men for more than a hundred years.

“The First Noel” stirs up images of angels in the night, shepherds with their sheep and wisemen coming to see the child King. Many a Christmas play has been inspired by the words of this song, and it’s no wonder, because the traditional English carol was written because of the plays that were shown in the medieval times.

We could go on and on with carols, just to mention a few “Away in a Manger”, “Joy to the World”, “O Come All Ye Faithful”, “O Little Town of Bethlehem”, “O Holy Night”, “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear” and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” (which incidentally is sung in the Charlie Brown Christmas.)

As the Christmas holidays became more commercialized with the coming of television to households and the ease of purchasing stereos (those things that played the big black cd’s) so did the music that was put out there for people to listen to.

Movies also played a part in making a song a hit.

Take the song “White Christmas”. Written by Irving Berlin, it was first sung by Bing Crosby in the movie Holiday Inn in 1942. In fact Berlin wrote the song for that movie which also starred Fred Astaire.

We were one year into World War II at this time and the feelings it evoked resonated on every battlefield where the Allied guys were fighting. It is the most popular song of all time for adults.

Other songs are “The Christmas Song”, you know, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose … “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”.

And how many of you remember “A Holly Jolly Christmas”, “Feliz Navidad”, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”, “Sleigh Ride” and Elvis Presley’s classic “Blue Christmas”.

In 1949 Gene Autry introduced the children and kids at heart to “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”.

The song became so poplar that it was the number 1 song on the charts during the week of Christmas that same year. Written by Johnny Marks the song was inspired by a story that Montgomery Ward published in 1939.

While the songs of the season have changed the joy and the mood setting tone they bring has not.

Enlist Some Musicians

Although caroling is traditionally done a capella, having someone who plays an instrument, like a guitar or violin, can ensure everyone is on the right note and can keep the pace of each song.

Plan To Rest

Singing can be joyful, but also tiring. Bring along refreshments so the carolers can rest their voices and stop to grab a drink or snack. Tea, coffee and cocoa can warm up participants on chilly days. Perhaps make one of the caroling stops in front of a local coffee shop and pop in after a set.

Coordinate Attire

Although everyone does not have to dress alike, a similar element, such as a red scarf or green mittens, can unite the group.

Add A Charitable Element

Consider incorporating a charitable aspect to the caroling. Collect financial or food donations for a local food pantry, or do a toy drive while caroling, encouraging people to offer a wrapped gift in exchange for some beautiful music.

Take time to slow down

et’s face it, sometimes we like to sit down to a meal around the table with candle light and silver and crystal and then there are times we just want to hang out and talk. A buffet is the perfect way to feed your friends and enjoy talking to them too. The food should be bite sized in which three or four options can be held on a small saucer sized plate.

Now your buffet can be as small or as large as you have friends to accommodate. It can be a simple afternoon snack or full evening meal. That is entirely up to you. It will work well from now until the midnight bell rings in the New Year.

But before you invite all your friends over, plan the meal well, also plan for two or three family members or best friends (who might spend the night before and the night after with you) to help serve and clean up afterwards. You may want to let some cleaning wait until the next day.

Another idea is you might enlist the help of a couple or three teens.

Let them dress up fancy in butler and maid attire and be the ones that clean up discreetly throughout the evening. If someone lays down a plate or a cup and they can keep the trash bagged up and carried out, the counter wiped down. Make a list for them to check off.

Some pointers to remember while you are setting up your food stations is to have several small trash containers close to each table or beside the enter and exit doors. Also have a small table that has wet wipes on them, especially near the dessert table for easy clean up of sticky fingers.

Sometimes your guests might want the recipe you have taken time to whip up. Print out each recipe and stack them on a table nearby so if a friend asks for it, they can take out their phone and snap a picture.

And don’t forget the music! It shouldn’t be loud and annoying, but something to play in the background to compliment the conversation.

1 small bunch dill, finely chopped, plus extra

Tomato Cheese Bread

Tomato Cheese Bread 2 tablespoons butter

1 medium onion, minced

Blend together the flour, eggs, milk, salt, butter, and dill in a food processor until smooth. Pour into a jug.

Heat a little oil in a non-stick frying or crepe pan set over medium heat until hot. Add a small ladle of batter to the pan and tilt with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook for 1 to 2 minutes until golden underneath. Flip and cook for a further minute or so. Remove to a plate and repeat the process using a little more oil for each crepe.

Frenching the lamb means to remove the meat from the bottom half of the ribs. Your butcher can do this for you.

Gather all ingredients. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Move the oven rack to the center position.

Combine bread crumbs, garlic, rosemary, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl; stir in 2 tablespoons olive oil to moisten the mixture.

Set aside. Season rack of lamb all over with 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large heavy oven-proof skillet over high heat. Add lamb and sear on all sides, about 1 to 2 minutes: set lamb aside for a few minutes. Brush lamb with mustard and roll in bread crumb mixture until evenly coated. Cover the ends of the bones with foil to prevent charring. Arrange the breaded rack of lamb boneside down in the same skillet.

Root beer works well as a glaze for old-fashioned baked ham for many reasons, the most obvious being its high sugar content, which caramelizes the glaze in the oven to create the perfect sticky-sweet coating. Root beer is also often made with complementary (albeit artificial) flavors that pair well with ham and brown sugar. Traditionally, the best root beer was made with sassafras and sarsaparilla, but today many recipes rely on additional flavorings derived from vanilla, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and licorice. Finally, root beer contains phosphoric acid, citric acid and carbon dioxide, which, if you want to apply a little food science, act as tenderizers to yield a juicier, more tender ham.

3/4 cup shredded provolone cheese (3 oz.)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Meanwhile, in a medium skillet heat 1 tablespoon of the butter over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; cook until tender. Set aside.

Use another 1 tablespoon of the butter to generously coat the bottom and sides of a 2-quart square baking dish. Sprinkle bottom and sides with 1/4 cup of the bread crumbs; set aside.

Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the hot potatoes in the saucepan until smooth.

Stir in eggs, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir in onion mixture, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, and salami.

Preheat oven to 350°F. Beat butter with a heavy-duty electric stand mixer on medium speed until creamy. Gradually add sugars, and beat until fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until blended.

Add pumpkin and vanilla, beating just until blended. Stir together flour, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice, baking soda, and salt.

Add to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat at low speed just until blended after each addition. Stir in chopped pecans. Spoon batter into a greased (with shortening) and floured 12-cup Bundt pan.

Bake in preheated oven until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 50 to 60 minutes. Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 minutes; remove from pan, and cool completely on a wire rack, about 1 hour.

Stir together 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 1/4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice, and a pinch of salt in a heavy saucepan over medium. Add 1 cup roughly chopped pecans, and cook, stirring constantly, until sugar melts and coats pecans, 7 to 8 minutes. (Sugar will appear grainy before it melts and coats pecans.) Spread on lightly greased (with cooking spray) wax paper, and cool 20 minutes.

Bring 1 cup packed light brown sugar, 1/3 cup heavy cream, and 1/4 cup salted butter to a boil in a 1-quart saucepan over medium, stirring often. Boil, stirring often, 1 minute; remove from heat. Gradually whisk in 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla extract until smooth.

1 egg white, raw or pasteurized

In an stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter until light and fluffy. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Mix in the egg and molasses.

Gradually add the flour mixture; combine on low speed. (You may need to work it with your hands to incorporate the last bit of flour.)

Divide dough into thirds; wrap each third in plastic. Chill for at least 1 hour or overnight. Before rolling out, let sit at room temperature for 5 to 10 minutes. If after refrigerating the dough feels too soft to roll out, work in a little more flour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place a third of the dough on a large piece of lightly floured parchment paper or wax paper. Using a rolling pin, roll dough 1/8 inch thick. Transfer the rolled out dough to the refrigerator again to chill for 5 to 10 minutes. This will make it easier to cut out the cookies. Use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes, or place a stencil over the dough and use a knife to cut into desired shapes. Transfer to ungreased baking sheets. Press raisins, chocolate chips, or candy pieces in the center of each cookie if desired for “buttons.” Bake at 350°F until crisp but not darkened, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Let sit a few minutes and then use a metal spatula to transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Beat the egg whites and lemon juice together, adding the powder sugar until the mixture holds stiff peaks. If the icing is too runny, add more powdered sugar until you get the desired consistency.

Once you make the royal icing, use quickly before it hardens.

Fill a piping bag with the icing to pipe out into different shapes on the cookies. (Or use a plastic sandwich bag, with the tip of one corner of the bag cut off.) Keep the icing covered while you work with it or it will dry out. Once the cookies are decorated, the surface of the royal icing will dry quickly, within 15 minutes. But the icing may still be soft inside. Let the decorated cookies sit at room temp for 12 hours for the icing to dry completely.

1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk 1 teaspoon orange extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Line an 11x7-in. dish with foil, letting ends extend over sides by 1 in.; grease foil with 1 teaspoon butter. In a large heavy saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup and remaining butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to medium-low; boil gently, without stirring, for 4 minutes.

Remove from the heat; gradually stir in milk. Cook and stir until a candy thermometer reads 244° (firm-ball stage). Remove from the heat; stir in extracts. Immediately pour into prepared dish (do not scrape saucepan). Let stand until firm.

Using foil, lift out candy; remove foil. Using a buttered knife, cut caramel into scant 1-1/2x1-in. pieces. Wrap individually in waxed paper; twist ends. Read more at tasteofhome.com.

Peanut Butter Snowballs

Triple Chocolate Fudge 4 teaspoons plus 1/2 cup butter, divided 4-1/2 cups sugar

1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk 1 teaspoon salt

16 ounces German sweet chocolate, chopped 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1 package (11-1/2 ounces) milk chocolate chips 2 jars (7 ounces each) marshmallow creme 4 cups chopped pecans or walnuts, toasted 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Line two 13x9-in. pans with heavy duty foil and grease the foil with 4 teaspoons butter. Don’t skimp on the foil, use the heavy foil or you won’t be able to pick up the fudge. In a heavy Dutch oven, combine sugar, milk, salt and the remaining butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Cook, without stirring, until a candy thermometer reads 234° (soft-ball stage). Remove from the heat. Stir in chopped German chocolate and the chocolate chips until smooth. Fold in the marshmallow creme, pecans and vanilla. Spread into prepared pans. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. Using foil, lift fudge out of pans. Discard foil; cut fudge into 1-in. squares. Store in airtight containers.

Old-Time Butter Crunch Candy

Candied Cranberries 1 bag fresh cranberries (12 oz.)

8 oz. orange juice

8 oz. Sprite or Seven Up

Chocolate Bonbons 4 cups confectioners’ sugar

1 cup ground pecans or walnuts

2 cups powdered sugar Blend the juice and clear colas in a bowl and put cranberries in to soak. Soak for at least an hour in the refrigerator. Experts say the cranberries won’t soak in very much more than that even if you leave them up to 12 hours. While they are soaking line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. When you take them out of your fridge turn your oven on to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour berries into a strainer and give a gentle shake, careful not to shake off all the liquid. Put the powered sugar in a zip bag and drop cranberries inside and shake gently to coat all the berries. Put on cookie sheet and pop into the oven for five to seven minutes to dry out the sugar. Watch closely.

Let them cool for about five minutes then refrigerate them for two hours to cool completely.

Hint: Don’t pour that sprite and orange juice mixture down the drain. Let it strain into a bowl and then pour into a pitcher. You get a neat snack and a drink in this recipe, sort of a two for one deal. Heat up the drink a cup at a time, add a cinnamon stick and three or four cloves.

Cream Cheese Candy 3 ounces cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk

1/4 teaspoon peppermint or almond extract

3 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Sugar or colored sugar, optional Mix cream cheese and extract until blended. Beat in 1-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar. Knead in remaining confectioners’ sugar. Shape into 1/2-in. balls. If desired, roll in sugar. Place on waxed paper. Flatten with a fork. Let stand until firm, 1-2 hours. Store between layers of waxed paper in an airtight container in the refrigerator. 3 cups confectioners’ sugar, divided

Old-Time Butter Crunch Candy 1 cup butter

1-1/4 cup sugar

3 cups sweetened shredded coconut

2 tablespoons light corn syrup

1/4 cup butter, softened

2 cups finely chopped toasted almonds or pecans

1 teaspoon almond extract

Line a 13x9-in. pan with foil; set aside. Using part of the butter, grease the sides of a large heavy saucepan. Add remaining butter to saucepan; melt over low heat. Add sugar, corn syrup and water.

Cook and stir over medium heat until a candy thermometer reads 300° (hard-crack stage). Remove from the heat and stir in almonds or pecans. Quickly pour into the prepared pan, spreading to cover bottom of pan. Cool completely. Carefully invert pan to remove candy in 1 piece; remove foil.

Melt half of the chocolate in a double boiler or microwave-safe bowl; spread over top of candy. Let cool. Turn candy over and repeat with remaining chocolate; cool. Break into 2-in. pieces. Store in an airtight container. Read more at tasteofhome.com.

Christmas Parades

will bring nostalgia and fun to communities

I

f there is one thing we know how to do is parade through our various towns bringing all the joy and laughter of Christmas. Citizens will line the streets to se the floats and fun. So mark your calendars and plan on being in these cities to see the parades.

Pontotoc

This year on Monday, December 1, Pontotoc City will open parading season downtown with the theme of Santa’s Workshop. The parade has a new route this year line up will begin at 5:30 p.m. on College and Green Streets. It will stepping off promptly at 6:30 p.m. from Green Street and head north on Main Street.

On that same day in the morning, Kindergarten and day care students will be visiting Santa from 8:15 a.m. until 12 noon. The general public can come see Santa from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Pontotoc Community House.

Thaxton

The Thaxton Christmas Parade will be on Friday, December 5. Line-up will be on Hunter Road starting at 5:30 p.m., Parade will start at 6:30 p.m. There will be activities at the Park Building after the parade.

A meal of chili and stew will be served, along with hotdogs, chips, drink and dessert for a donation to help with the expenses of this event. Santa will be there to visit and get your wish list for Christmas.

Organizers ask you to please be making plans to put an entry in the parade, float, antique car, tractor, ATV, Golf Cart.

Toccopola

Toccopola’s parade will be at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 7. Now after the parade, the folks will gather into the community center for wonderful food, fellowship, and music.

Sherman

The theme of the Sherman parade this year is Merry and Bright. It is set to roll down the streets on Monday, December 8, 6:30 p.m. with line up to start at 6 p.m. To enter please call the town hall at 662-840-9185 so they will know how many entrants to expect.

Ecru

In the town of Ecru they are parading and more!

December 13-14 - Scavenger hunt downtown. Snap a picture with candy canes you find and take the picture into a local retailer to claim a free Town of Ecru ornament.

December 20 - Story time with Mr. Bruce McCoy at Pannell Park, as he reminds us of the reason for the season 10:00 a.m.

Bethlehem

is alive and well in Algoma

I

f you want to get a feel for what a silent holy night is about, make sure you visit the town of Algoma the first weekend in December.

You are invited to come see the different parts of the Christmas story.

While the animals are wooden, the people standing beside the animals are very real.

The history of Jesus’ birth is depicted from the annunciation, or when the angel told Mary about the Holy Spirit overshadowing her to the wise men coming to worship the new born King. And it is told through the music that plays and words written on large plywood panels.

The nativity is set for, December 5-6 from 6-9 p.m.

The Drive-Thru Nativity consists of five well-known scenes portraying the birth of Jesus. They are:  The angel appearing to Mary  Mary and Joseph on their way to Bethlehem  Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in the manger  The angel appearing to the shepherds  Three wise men on their way to find the new-born King

There is no charge. Bring your group by bus, by van or by car. Algoma Baptist Church is located off Highway 15 South, one mile down Algoma Road.

Rudolph Run T

through the streets of Pontotoc

he annual Rudolph Run is set for Saturday, December 13, 2025, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Pontotoc County Library in downtown Pontotoc. If you enjoy running through the streets of Pontotoc then this run is right for you! The run features a 5K, 10K or Relaxing Reindeer run.

Race will begin and end at the Pontotoc Dixie Regional Library. Walkers and runners will pass through picturesque Pontotoc, Mississippi- the business district and the holiday decorated residential area, jogging by the famous Santa and Reindeer which has been a delightful display in Pontotoc and is now a tradition of adults.

The Rudolph Run is being sponsored by the Pontotoc Juniorettes Club.

Runners may register online runsignup.com or that morning. Online before the deadline will assure you a t-shirt and early discount.

The entry fee is $35 through November 30 and increases to $40 after that day.

or as long as Santa has existed kids have wanted him to bring them the latest toy there was. In yonder years that might be the Lone Ranger’s pistols and signature white hat and you could not forget the ‘silver’ bullets.

For the girls there has been every kind of doll from those that played in the bathtub to sketching a picture. And then there are those enduring toys that appeal to boys and girls alike.

Such as Lite-Brite, a lit up pedestal that had peg holes and see through colored pegs to put into them into making a picture of a sail boat or cat or dog. It would teach simple art. And speaking of art there was the etch-a-sketch. The little red box that you turned the knobs on to make a picture.

Those are still popular.

The highlight for many a child was waiting on the Sears and Roebuck Christmas catalog to arrive so they could flip to the toy section to figure out just how much they wanted Santa to bring.

But just what will kiddos be clamoring for today?

Board games are still a popular item. From the tried and true Candy Land to Monopoly. In fact Monopoly has a new spin on it called App Banking. Other board games include Sorry, Clue, and new titles like Cownado. There is a tabletop game called Cows in Space. It is along the same lines as the old fishing game. It is a fast-paced game by Relatable where players wear magnetic UFO headbands to abduct cows from a spinning base. It’s a hands-free game where the goal is to collect the most cows before the game ends.

And what about dolls? And PlayDoh? Well Play-Doh and Barbie have married so to speak and created the Play-Doh Barbie. Your child will use molds and tools to make clothes, wigs and accessories for the doll. The possibilities are endless and it will push their creativity level off the charts.

But if you want that conventional type Barbie she is still popular too with her myriad of accessories and life skills play sets. From the dream camper to the dream house which features a swimming pool to just the pool play set for water fun that will last the whole summer through.

Do you remember Tiddlywinks?

You know when you had little plastic discs (well it really started with mama’s flat buttons once upon a long time ago) and you pressed against the back of the disc with another one to make it jump into a can or a cup or a box or bounced it into said box? Well it has gotten an upgrade and blended with Connect 4 and the new name is Connect 4 Frenzy. You bounce the disks into a board that lies flat, but if another player bounces their disc on top of yours, the space is theirs. It is fast paced until someone gets four in a row.

Dragons continue to be a popular toy with the How To Train Your Dragon movie still a hit among the kids.

There is a real flying RC Toothless 30 inch dragon as well as the various action figures that go along with him.

Toy Story continues to be popular as well with Woody and Jesse and Buzz Lightyear still being an item that will be on many a Christmas list.

Hot Wheels continues to make the road and cars faster and faster. There is a triple decker road as well as a launch pad for the little cars to fly across the ravine and land in a dragon’s mouth.

And who doesn’t love monster trucks?

There are a number of different styles of them for your youngster to enjoy hours of fun in the mud and dirt.

Do you have a child that wants to spy be it girl or boy? Perhaps they

need to tell Santa They want the Snap Circuits’ Spy Kit which allows them to experiment using electricity and circuitry to build top secret devices like voice changers, motion detectors and such. There are more than 25 spy missions for your little special agent to try.

Do you have a girl that just loves to glam it up? Well there is a custom lipstick and gloss maker for her as well as a spa set that will have her pampering herself for hours.

Pokemon is still popular with sweet sleeping plushes that will send your little ones off to dreamland.

And what about the small tykes?

There are baby dolls and small play kitchens which includes a stove and sink along with dishes and all kinds of things that will teach them the joy of keeping house and enjoying things on their own level.

For those who love the sensory there is kinetic sand. And Play-Doh has launched six new doughs that come in a signature scent and a special feel.

There are super stretch doughs that stretch out and two soft butter doughs, play foam that is full of foam chunks and airy dough for those who just like to sit and feel it in their hands.

Celebrate the season through lighting an

ne of the most special ways you can celebrate Christmas this year is through making and advent wreath and worshiping with your family as you reflect on Christ’s coming.

Christians throughout history have embraced this season of spiritual preparation using Advent readings—short Bible passages read during the lighting of the Advent wreath.

This sacred time invites us to slow down from all the holiday preparations and parties, take a deep breath, and remember the reason for the season: the eternal Jesus Christ taking on human flesh.

ocusing on Advent as an individual, a family, or a church can be helpful in refocusing us on the “true meaning” of our Christmas season. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, celebrating Advent reminds us that we are “poor and imperfect, and… look forward to something greater to come.”

He also compared the picture that Advent paints to “A prison cell, in which one waits, hopes — and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside.”

One writer explains that this season symbolizes the Church’s modern situation of prayerfully waiting for the return of Christ to consummate his eternal kingdom in the same way that the Old Testament Israelites prayerfully waited in exile for the coming of their Messiah (Acts 2:17; Hebrews 1:2).

Advent means to prepare yourself. What are we preparing ourselves for? To worship the One who came, was born as a babe so He could sacrifice his sinless self on a cross for us. The meaning of the season of Advent is to ready one’s heart for the arrival of Christ at Christmas. Through the four weeks of Advent, Christians use a wreath decorated with five candles to symbolize several sacred phases of preparation. The three Advent candle colors, purple, pink, and white, are representative of the faithful anticipation that believers partake to ready their hearts and minds for the birth or second coming of Jesus Christ.

Purple Advent Candle

Purple has traditionally been the central color of Advent. This color signifies repentance and fasting. The Christian custom of withholding oneself food or some other desire is a practice wherein Christians

dvent uses the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day to prepare our hearts to truly worship our Lord when we celebrate His birth. This year, Christmas Day is on Thursday so advent will begin the last Sunday in November.

Each Sunday you will light four candles and on Christmas Day you will light the center candle, which should be taller than the other four.

Week 1 | November 30 | The Candle of Hope Like the prophets in the Old Testament, we hope for a Messiah to save us from the sin in the world (Isaiah 9:6-7). We anticipate our Savior’s arrival.

Also known as the “prophecy candle,” this candle assures us we can have hope that God will fulfill the prophecies declared in the

demonstrate their devotion to God and sanctify their heart and body.

Purple is also the liturgical color for Lent, which likewise incorporates a time of contemplation, repentance, and spiritual preparation.

Purple is also the color of nobility and the supremacy of Christ, who is recognized as the “King of Kings.” So, purple in this use illustrates the expectation of and welcoming of our King celebrated during Advent.

The purple candle is the first, second and fourth candles that are lit.

They are the candles of hope, peace and love.

Pink Advent Candle

Pink is the color of Advent used during the third Sunday of Advent.

Pink represents joy or triumph and this candle exhibits a transition in the season of Advent away from repentance and to a celebration. It is the third advent candle and the candle of joy.

White Advent Candle

White is the Advent candle color symbolizing purity, light, restoration, and holiness. White is also a representation of victory.

The Christ candle is the fifth Advent candle, placed in the center of the wreath as a white candle.

Jesus Christ is the righteous, immaculate, pure Savior. He is the light come into a dark and depraved world. He is often described in the Bible wearing bright, profoundly white robes, like snow, and shining with the brightest of light. When he was transfigured on the mountain with the disciples his robe became white. Furthermore, those who accept Jesus Christ as Savior are cleansed of their sins and made whiter than snow.

Old Testament about Jesus. Hope doesn’t disappoint us (Romans 5:5). In this day and age, where evil abounds and all seems lost, we can also hope that the prophecies about Jesus’ second arrival to earth will also be fulfilled.

Hope, in the Bible, exists as a secure assurance, a trust placed in a trustworthy God. God has not failed us in the past, and therefore, if he claims he will do something in the future, we can have a hope that he will fulfill that claim.

Hope waits and endures. It isn’t flimsy or merely wishful thinking. It can withstand fire, trials, and despair.

Week 2 | December 7 | The Candle of Peace One of the hallmarks of the Christmas story is when the angels appear to the shepherds and proclaim, “Peace on earth,” in Luke 2:14.

Jesus brought about peace, in the most unexpected ways, when he arrived. The Jews, particularly the zealots, wanted a rebellion. They wanted their Savior to overturn the oppressive rule of the Romans and bring about peace in a violent way.

But Jesus had something else in mind. Jesus brings us peace in a number of ways.

First, he gives us inner peace. Because of his work on the cross, we have a chance to receive salvation and be indwelled by the Holy Spirit. This grants us an inner peace (John 14:27). Not only do we have the peace that comes from our assurance of salvation, but we also have the peace of mind knowing God will heal this broken world and will come again.

Second, we have peace with others. We put aside our differences (Galatians 3:28), especially with other believers, because we belong to the same family. We have the same purpose: to let others know about the peace of Christ.

The Hebrew word for peace, Shalom, goes far beyond not fighting with others or peace as we know it. Shalom is, in essence, how things are meant to be: a slice of heaven.

The peace of God allows us to look at others through heaven’s eyes and help guide the world to see God’s here and not-yet here kingdom.

Peace from God, biblical peace, allows us to trust in God’s promises (Proverbs 3:5), through restful, tranquil faith, despite the dark, scary world around us.

Week 3 |December 14 | The Candle of Joy This candle reflects the joy that comes through Jesus’ arrival, and through the salvation he has gifted us.

During this third week of advent, this Sunday celebrates the passage Philippians 4:4-5, its verses extolling readers to “rejoice” for “indeed the Lord is near.”

In other words, this week celebrates the joy of Christ’s coming to earth.

No matter what color of candle a church displays on that third Sunday, churches want to highlight the importance of joy in advent season. During a time where depression is at an all-time high and people seem to be in the most despair, this candle offers a bright light during a dark time.

It is also known as the Shepherd Candle to highlight the joy the shepherds experienced when they received the good news about Christ’s birth (Luke 2:8-20).

Week 4 | December 21 | The Candle of Love Love plays a vital role in the Christmas story. Because of Joseph’s love for Mary, he didn’t stone her when he found out she was pregnant with what he thought was a child out of wedlock with another man (Matthew 1:18-19). Mary has a natural motherly love for Jesus, and ultimately, we see God’s love for everyone by sending his son for us (John 3:16).

Jesus focused on preaching love throughout his ministry. Two of his greatest commands involve love: Love God, love your neighbor (Matthew 22:36-40).

Love is the greatest of all the virtues on the Advent wreath and encompasses Jesus’ entire purpose for being on earth (1 Corinthians 13:13).

We cannot walk with Christ without it, and we cannot have the Christmas story without it. As Linus states in A Charlie Brown Christmas, “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Christmas Day | December 25 | The Christ Candle Light the white candle at the center of the wreath on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. The white tends to symbolize Christ’s purity, showing Christ’s blamelessness.

We do have to keep in mind, churches can vary on candle colors, and not everyone chooses to light a white candle for Christ.

Not surprisingly, the Christ candle represents Christ and the role he plays in the Christmas story. Jesus brought light into the world through his arrival on earth as a baby.

The greatest gift of all came that first Christmas. It wasn’t wrapped in a beautiful package and set under a decorated tree. The greatest gift came wrapped in the flesh of baby Jesus and laid in the rough wood of a manger. Our perfect gift would later be rewrapped in the scars of our sin and nailed to the rugged wood of a cross on Calvary, all because of love.

How to make an Advent Wreath

A

n Advent wreath is simple to make and can be made a number of different ways. One of the simplest ways is to get a pretty round plate and put five votive type candles on it, four on the edges and one in the middle. Put a little block under the one in the middle to raise it up as the Christ candle.

Fill in cedar, holly and red berries around it, being careful to make sure it is lower than your flame.

If you want your wreath to be totally safe, you can purchase the led type candles and use them. You can use silk holly and greenery so it won’t dry out. This makes it a great part of decoration in your child’s room if you wish to remind them of what the season is about.

If you want to use the tapers with the different colors like is discussed in the advent wreath article, purchase small candle holders and put them in a plate or you can make the wreath with a foam circle from the dollar store. Score out the holes for the candles to fit in, putting the middle candle in a holder in the middle of the circle. You will have to place this on a plate or pan and put water in it so your greenery will stay fresh. Stick greenery into the foam and make sure it stays moistened throughout the month.

The advent candles can be a part of your mantle decorations if you wish. Instead of putting them in a circle line them up on your mantle with the Christ candle in the middle.

It is not the color of the candles that is important or that you have everything perfect around them, it is the fact that you take a few moments throughout this blessed season to reflect upon the birth of our Lord Jesus.
