Cover Page Design:

4-H has a motto, which is "Learn to do by doing". So instead of going out to a design company to develop a poster, many members created self-made submissions as a contest.

All members that participated showed great courage, believing in themselves and willing to share their talents to support their club and our district. The winning poster was created by Ethan Myers-Abt a member of the East Ponoka 4-H Beef Club.

To arrange delivery to VJV, please contact Patrick Lentz: 403-588-1828

WHAT DO YOU RECEIVE FROM YOUR PURCHASE?

It is the beef committee’s hope, that young people selling in this auction should receive premium prices. Why this premium? First, it allows these 4-H members enough margin for a small profit.

Secondly, you will receive a higher graded and yielding beef product, not to mention community recognition.

For example:

- A purchase live weight of 1200 lbs

- Typical hanging weight: 700lb carcass

HOW DO I GET MY PURCHASE PROCESSED?

All members have pre-booked processing dates at various local facilities. You can choose to utilize these dates or make your own arrangements at a facilities of choice.

Letter from the President

Growth, as defined: “1) the process of increasing in physical size. 2) the process of developing or maturing physically, mentally, or spiritually. 3) the process of increasing in amount, value, or importance”

On behalf of the Ponoka District 4-H Beef Committee, I would like to welcome you all to our 2024 show and sale. Our district clubs are growing larger than ever, again with many of our members, participating in their first show and sale. What contributes to this unprecedented growth in the show and sale, growth in reciprocal community support, and growth in our clubs? It could be, as simple as the opportunity for each and every member to grow in themselves. 4-H is modeled around the concept of "learn to do by doing". Whether you have supported 4-H for years, or this is your first opportunity, you will once again see a tremendous group of young boys and girls that have worked very hard to prepare for this event. The Show and Sale continues to grow since the 1950’s, and clearly remains a signature event, to bring together, the Ponoka and surrounding area community. Many hours of planning and preparing have gone into this event from our boards, parents, volunteers, and sponsors, which all our members are extremely thankful for.

At the 2024 Show & Sale, you are certain to see some great looking animals, but what you may not see are the hours of dedication put in to get here. Partnerships have been developing between these animals and members of our local youth for the past 211 days. The members walk their animals, wash, and brush them, talk to them, and give them the best life they can. Our young members learn in many ways throughout all phases of their beef projects, learning the fundamentals about raising beef cattle. Steers are chosen shortly after weaning and official weights are taken in early October to start off their 4-H project. Each member is responsible to capture and retain animal history, feed records, vaccinations, and all costs and activities as a minimum. They are careful with measuring different types of feed to ensure effective growth and proper health of each animal. We are very excited to welcome back the growing group of female projects to the show and sale. This year, we will be hosting our female classes May 6th at 7pm. We have seen some great participation and momentum to grow the female portion of our show and encourage your attendance and support.

What does it mean to be a 4-H member you might ask? Every member may have a bit of a different answer, but it is certain to include them using the 4-H’s: Head, Hands, Heart and Health. 4-H is about engaging youth to reach their fullest potential, while developing citizenship, leadership, responsibility, and life skills. It is about building relationships with friends, animals, and community. Our world is continually changing, and these kids are adapting and gaining the skills they will need to overcome challenges they may face in life. I challenge you to spend any time that you have, visiting with the members, they are really looking forward to it. These kids are making positive impacts to peers, parents, community, and our world, with confidence gained on days like today. We all play a part in the growth of these members. From the Cleaver farms at the top of the grandstand, to the animals in the ring, these kids have put in the effort, and should be extremely proud of their accomplishments. Please help us truly celebrate this amazing growth journey of our individual members, our clubs, our 4-H programs and the Ponoka and surrounding community, by the impact of this truly unique event.

Thank you again for supporting in any way possible. Let us all enjoy and celebrate “growth”, together.

I pledge

My head to clearer thinking, My heart to greater loyalty, My hands to larger service, My health to better living, For my club, my community, My country, and my world.

Charity Steer 2023

East Ponoka Beef Club

Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters of 4-H, Hello, I am Christine Gustafson, General Leader of the East Ponoka 4-H Beef Club, along with my Assistant Leaders, Alex Cripps, Craig Abt, Megan Cox, Nicole Myers-Abt and Cleaver Leaders Joanna Koelman. This is our 71 st year of operation.

This year we have 4 new families who have joined our club to learn about the 4-H program. Along with my assistance leaders, we share the responsibility for 9 juniors, 8 intermediates, 2 seniors, and 9 cleavers. We will be showing 19 market steer projects, and our cleavers are excited to show the Charity Steer and their project farms on district show and sale day. It has been fun getting to know our new families, and members!

Together we have shared lots of laughs, made new friendships and many memories. Our members had a wonderful year learning the ins and outs of raising and caring for their steers, following the 4-H moto of “learning to do by doing”. We have also participated in regular monthly meetings, Christmas parties, public speaking, community service, numerous workshops for record books, multispecies judging, clipping, grooming, showmanship and collaborating with the West Club for show practice nights. I have enjoyed watching these members grow, learn, and gain confidence throughout these various activities of the 4-H program and will miss everyone dearly. With great memories at hand, I have decided to pass the torch to my assistant leaders and step down from the East Ponoka 4-H Beef Club. It has been an incredible honor to lead my members, gain new friendships and yes also “learning to do by doing”.

I am so proud of all your accomplishments this year and all that each of you will continue achieve. On behalf of our Club Members, and families, we want to send a special thanks to the many buyers, sponsors, friends & families that continue to support our Club and District. Without your continued support, our events and learning opportunities of the 4-H program would not be possible. We appreciate you and look forward to seeing everyone on May 6 h & 7th!!!

Kind Regards, Christine
