Cover Page Design: 4-H has a motto, which is "Learn to do by doing". So instead of going out to a design company to develop a poster this year, many members created self-made submissions as a contest.

All members that participated showed great courage, believing in themselves and willing to share their talents to support their club and our district. The winning poster was created from our West Club's 15 year old Jenalee Stewart!

Sale Information YOUR SUPPORT OF THIS AUCTION WILL:

-Encourage these dedicated youth to continue raising livestock in the future and confirm “Hard work pays off”, this may include the opportunity to self-fund next year’s project or start/ expand their herd. Remember these members have much higher costs than traditional.

-Ensure that all buyers continue to receive the best possible product, as these young men and women have put in countless hours with their projects to ensure their projects qualify for the highest grades of meat possible.

-Encourage youth to be involved in 4-H. -Support many youth’s ambitions for post secondary school, entrepreneurship and other ambitions that give back to our communities.

SUPPOSE YOU BUY: There are many ways to use an animal. Here are a few suggestions: Individuals · Put it in your freezer or food locker, if a whole animal is too much, split it with a others. · Resell it at the market price to the commercial buyer who is in attendance.

Service clubs, lodges: · Auction off packaged meat to members and boost your club treasury. · Put on a BBQ. · Donate meat to your favourite charity.

Businesses: · Present packaged meat to employees. · Put on a barbecue for your employees. · Use it in a sales/ marketing promotion.

Restaurants and Markets: · Advertise and serve prize-winning meat.

Resale Option: If you or your organization plan to purchase and want to resell at market price, delivery to VJV for the Wednesday sale can be arranged.

Letter from the President On behalf of the Ponoka District 4-H Beef Committee, I would like to welcome you all back to our show and sale. As the past two years have been extremely challenging for our youth, we are all, even as adults, extremely thankful to gather again in the spirit of supporting our young members. For many of our members, this will be their first in person event. 4-H is modeled around the concept of "learn to do by doing". Whether you have supported 4-H for years, or this is your first opportunity, you will once again see a tremendous group of young boys and girls that have worked very hard to prepare for this event. The Show and Sale has been going on for a very long time, and continues to be a signature event for Ponoka and surrounding area. Many hours of planning and preparing have gone into this event from our boards, parents, volunteers and sponsors, which all our members are extremely thankful for.

At the Show & Sale, you are certain to see some great looking animals, but what you may not see are the hours of dedication put in to get here. Partnerships have been developing between these animals and members of our local youth for the past 203 days. The members walk their animals, wash and brush them, talk to them and give them the best life they can. Our young members learn in many ways throughout all phases of their beef projects, learning the fundamentals about raising beef cattle. Steers are chosen shortly after weaning and official weights are taken in early October to start off the 4-H project. Each member is responsible to capture and retain animal history, feed records, vaccinations, and all costs and activities as a minimum. They are careful with measuring different types of feed to ensure proper growth and health of each animal. We are very excited to welcome back female projects to the show and sale. This year, we will be hosting our female classes May 2nd. We have seen some great participation and momentum to grow the female portion of our show and encourage your attendance.

What does it mean to be a 4-H member you might ask? Every member may have a bit of a different answer but it is certain to include them using the 4-H’s: Head, Hands, Heart and Health. 4-H is about engaging youth to reach their fullest potential, while developing citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills. It is about building relationships with friends, animals and our community. Our world is always changing and kids are adapting and gaining the skills they will need to overcome challenges they may face. We see many past and present 4-H members often referred to as “one of the good ones”. I challenge you to spend any time that you have, visiting with the members, they are really looking forward to it. These kids are making positive impacts to peers, parents, community, our world with confidence gained on days like today. You will see them again, remember them. They will be there someday in our workforce, when someone needs help, with the same values.

Charity Steer

Meet Bandit, this year’s Charity Steer supporting the Ponoka Food Bank & Stollery Children’s Hospital! The members involved in both the East and West Ponoka 4-H Beef Clubs chose the charities to donate to and have been selling raffle tickets throughout the year. Your purchase of a raffle ticket is your chance to win one of 2 prizes! Each prize is a half a nicely finished quality beef that is cut and wrapped! The 2 clubs take turns each year to care for and feed the charity steer. This year’s charity steer is being raised by a member of the East Ponoka 4-H Beef Club.

Tickets are available for purchase from any East or West club member for $5.00 each.

The draw will take place immediately after the sale of steers May 3rd, 2022 at the Calnash Ag Event Center in Ponoka.

East Ponoka Beef Club Dear Friends, Family and Supporters of 4-H, Hi, I am Christine Gustafson General Leader of the East Ponoka 4-H Beef Club, along with my assistant leaders, Alex Cripps, Aimee Cripps, Billie-Jo Poitras, Craig Abt and Nicole Myers-Abt. Together we share the leadership of our fearsome 4, Carter Gustafson (Sr.), Rhett Poitras (Jr.), Dailynn Cripps (Jr.) and Madison Myers-Abt (Jr.) and let’s not forget our 2 Cleaver Kiddos, Harper Cripps and Ethan Myers-Abt.

In the last 70 years, our club has seen many changes and particularly considerable change in club operations throughout the global pandemic. During that time the members and leaders, had to quickly learn how to navigate the world of virtual 4-H. The kids gained valuable skills working in a virtual world with on-line Public Speaking and monthly meetings. They also gained valuable lessons in developing strategies for marketing their projects through video development. I am so proud of our members as they remained resilient and dedicated to “learning to do by doing” from a distance in a virtual world.

This year our kids are very excited to learn the operations of 4-H using our in-person format. We have taken advantage of this opportunity to host a calf tour, monthly meetings, Christmas Skating parties, Public Speaking, Community Service events and collaborating with the West Club for Showmanship practice nights. Through these many events our members have gained confidence in their Showmanship, Grooming and steer conformation and are eager to show off their accomplishments at our District Show & Sale!!!

We want to send a special thanks to the many Buyers, Sponsors, Friends & Families that continue to support our Club and District! We look forward to seeing you all on May 2nd & 3rd!

East Ponoka Beef Club My name is Rhett Poitras, I am 11 years old and attend Mecca Glen School. This is my first year in 4-H, and I am a junior member from the East Ponoka Beef Club. The Best part about 4-H in my opinion is my calf that I call Big Red. He is a black angus cross Simmental Steer.

I enjoy playing Rec Hockey, Baseball and Rodeoing in the summer.

108- Rhett Poitras– Jr. Member Hi, my name is Dailynn Cripps. I’m 11 years old and go to Mecca Glen school. This is my second year in the East Ponoka Beef Club. I have a steer named Tevin. He is black angus that I got from my grandpa. This year I am the secretary and club reporter. I like to ride my horse Jazzy and play with my cats and dog. I also take guitar lessons.

My name is Madison Myers-Abt. I am 10 years old and I am in grade 5 home school. This is my second year in the East Ponoka Beef 4-H and I am really enjoying working with my steer this year.

His name is Heart. He is an Angus Simmental Cross. I am also treasurer for our club and district reporter where I did a small report on the multi-species judging for the paper. I also enjoy training dogs, playing piano and violin, and riding my horse Cal. I would like to thank all who bid on my steer last year and especially my 2021 buyer Tim Johnson. My name is Carter Gustafson and this is my 6th year with the East Ponoka 4-H Beef Club. I am in Gr. 9 at Wetaskiwin Composite High School. This year I am raising a Gelbvieh Simmental X steer, named Tucker. He has a big personality, and I am looking forward to showing him off. I enjoy 4-H as it has taught me how to raise good quality steer that has good growth and finish. Outside of 4-H I enjoy Hockey, Dirt Biking, and farming. Hi, my name is Harper Cripps and I’m 8 years old. This is my second year as a cleaver in the East Ponoka 4H Beef Club. I’m looking forward to getting my own steer next year. I go to Mecca Glen School. I take piano lessons and I like to rodeo on my horse Cody. I love my kittens, Spice and Willow, and my dog, Scout.

West Ponoka Beef Club Hello, my name is Leah Cline and I am the general leader for the West Ponoka 4-H Beef Club. This is our 67th year of operation and this year we have 22 members and 1 cleaver.

Along with awesome members and wonderful families, we also have 4 great assistant leaders helping our club out, thank you to: Patrick Lentz, Kathy Marsh, Curtis Topham and Jodie Tofsrud.

4-H is such an incredible program and I love to watch the members grow, learn and gain confidence throughout the many activities we do. The past couple of years certainly challenged us and changed how we operated but we all learned from it; however, I am very thankful that we have been able to do more activities together and in person this year! It has been a lot of fun being together and getting to know everybody better.

Throughout our year we have monthly meetings, complete fundraising activities, participate in public speaking & community service activities, participate in highway cleanup, different workshops, opportunities to learn more about so many things and of course time spent working with our projects and some social activities too. Our 4-H family is a lot of fun and I’m super proud of all of our members!

This year we are happy to have 7 heifer projects, 3 cow/calf projects, 22 market steer projects and 1 carcass steer project. We are so happy to be able to have a live, in-person show & sale and look forward to seeing all of you there! The members have all spent a lot of time working with their projects and it will be nice to be able to share that with all of you.

West Ponoka Beef Club Hello, my name is Faith Lentz. I am in 4th grade at St. Augustine school in Ponoka. My steer's name is Browzer, because he has little white eyebrows.

My steer is a limousine cross with a black Angus and is a very quiet boy.

I have been a cleaver before, but this is my first year in 4-H with a project and I hope to visit with you at the show and sale. Thank you for supporting 4H!

101- Faith Lentz– Jr. Member My name is Erik Stewart and I am 10 years old. This is my 2nd year in beef 4-H. I live on a farm West of Ponoka with many different animals. I like building tree forts, hatching baby chicks and ducks and playing hockey. I have several longhorn cows and really like calving time when my herd grows even more. Thank you to all the people who support 4-H. I hope to see you at the show and sale.

102- Erik Stewart– Jr. Member My name is Brody Marsh. I am 10 years old and this is my second year in 4-H. My steers name is Diesel, he is a black angus cross with a limo. I really enjoy 4H, working with my steer and am looking forward to going to camp again this summer. I also play hockey and lacrosse.

West Ponoka Beef Club Hi my name is Karlee Sterk, I am 10 years old and this is my first year as a 4-H member. My Steer is a Charolais cross, named Moonlight. I attend Ponoka Christian School. I love animals, especially my steer and working with him. I also enjoy playing games, camping and spending time outside. I look forward to our show and sale, I hope you can come out and enjoy it too

104- Karlee Sterk– Jr. Member My name is Jude Tofsrud and I am 11 years old. This is my first year in the West Ponoka 4-H Beef Club. I have one project this year which is my Steer and his name is Bart. I have been working hard on him this Winter which he did not like at first, however now he loves to be brushed. Since this is my first Show and Sale I am hoping to see many people there so we can show our hard work we have done this year.

105- Jude Tofsrud– Jr. Member Hi, my name is Brodey Thalen. I am 10 years old and I am in Grade 5 at Ponoka Christian School. This is my 2nd year in 4H and I am raising a red blazed-face Simmental Cross named Buckshot. He is tame but a bit stubborn. He is still fairly easy to work with though. I would like to thank Van Stryland Farms for buying my steer last year. I look forward to see you at our show and sale this year.

West Ponoka Beef Club Hi, my name is Trevor Thalen and I am 10 years old. This is my 1st year in 4-H and I really like my homeraised steer. His name is Buck and he is really calm and easy to walk.

Some of my favorite things about 4-H are working with my steer and hanging out with my 4-H friends. I am looking forward to showing my steer on May 3rd. Hope you can make it!

107- Trevor Thalen– Jr. Member Hi, my name is Grady Topham. I am 13 years old and this is my 3rd year in 4-H. I enjoy playing hockey, golf, and swimming. This year I have a Black Angus X Simmental steer named Wilson. He has been easy to work with. I’m happy we are going to have a show and sale this year.

West Ponoka Beef Club Hi my name is Jenalee Stewart, this is my 4th year in beef 4-h and I am currently the treasurer. I ride horses and am the president in Silver Valley 4-H riders. I love riding horses and playing basketball and volleyball. This year I have a market steer, carcass steer and a heifer project ! 203- Jenalee Stewart– Int. Member Hi, my name is Jessy Sheppard and this is my ninth year in 4H as a cleaver and member. This year I have a steer, heifer and cow calf project. I am 14 years old and in Grade 9 at Crestomere School. Some sports I play are volleyball and basketball on my school teams and I also play club volleyball. I love looking after all my 4H animals and the variety of animals I have including a pig, ducks, cats and the best dog in the world. West Ponoka Beef Club My name is London Tofsrud. This is my 4th year in the West Ponoka 4-H Beef Club. I am also a member of Silver Valley 4-H Riders. I am very excited to have a in person Show and Sale this year!! I have been working with my Steer, Jack, however he likes to stay close to the feed bunk. I will also be bringing my heifer, Charlie; and hopefully my Cow Calf pair to the show this year as well. I am hoping that I will see you all at the Show and Sale this year as there are so many amazing projects in both clubs!

206- London Tofsrud– Int. Member My name is Owen Stewart and this is my 4th year in beef 4-H. I am 13 years old and in grade 7 at St. Augustine school. I enjoy basketball and driving our quad with the sleds behind it. My family and I live on a farm West of Ponoka. This year I have both a steer and heifer Project. My Steers name is Jack and my heifer is Rose. Thank you to everyone that supports the 4-H program.

207- Owen Stewart– Int. Member Hi my name is Quinn Lentz I’m 13 years old and go to St. Augustine school. My steer is named Maverick and he is a Simmental crossed with a black angus. He is a great steer and is filling out amazingly.

302- Sadie Haan– Sr. Member Hi, my name is Emily Cline, I am 15 years old and this is my 7th year in the West Ponoka 4-H Beef Club. I am in grade 10 and go to Ponoka Secondary Campus. This year I have a steer project named Barry, he is a Limo cross. I also have a heifer project named Meredith, she is a Red Angus cross.

Along with Beef 4-H I am also in Horse 4H, I am a member of the Silver Valley 4-H Riders with my horse Lincoln.

303- Emily Cline– Sr. Member Hello, my name is Delaney Topham. I’m 16 years old and in Grade 10 at the Brick Learning Center. This is my 3rd year in 4-H. My steers name is Storm and he is a Black Angus cross. I love working with animals on our farm. In my spare time I like listening to country music and riding horses. Hello & Welcome to the 2022 4-H Show and Sale. My name is Jake Sheppard and this is my 8th steer project as a member of the West Ponoka 4-H beef club. I also have a heifer project, Wilma who is my 5th heifer project and hopefully I will also have a cow calf project as well. I am a Grade 11 student at Ponoka Secondary Campus and I enjoy fishing, quadding and pretty much anything farming. I also play football with the Ponoka Broncs.
