Food Crush

Donuts are one of those things that make life a little bit sweeter. Happiness seems to course through people when eating a donut. They’re kind of magical like that. If donuts are part of the morning, the day is usually off to a happier start than it would be otherwise. Set back off the corner of Hartford and Seventh, Turtle’s Donut Shoppe is starting days off sweetly by selling some of the best donuts and pastries in northern Oklahoma. Owned by Jeff and Shannon Schieber, this little local shop has been satisfying sweet tooths across the area for 20+ years and is still going strong.

There are different kinds of donut people. There are long john people or twist people. Bear claw people or apple fritter people (apple fritters for life). Cake donut people or yeast donut people. Personally, I am hands down a plain, glazed, yeast donut person, and Turtle’s has my favorite one in town. It’s light, it’s puffy and the amount of glaze on the donut is excellent. I want to taste the actual donut, so the amount of glaze is important to me. The sweetness and quantity of this glaze enhances the flavor of the dough without overpowering it. For the cake lovers out there, the blueberry cake donut is fantastic. Tart yet sugary, dense yet tender with amazing texture, it is bursting at the seams with blueberry flavor.

There is also this bran muffin. Hold on … stay with me here. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill, boring, bran muffin. This mini bundt cake-looking muffin tastes like carrot cake. Pecans, cinnamon, a few raisins (and even some carrots!) turn what would be a bland, depressing muffin into a flavorful, crumbly pastry with the most delicious crusty edges that pairs perfectly with a strong cup of dark roast coffee. With roomy seating for approximately 24 people, grabbing lunch with one of their creamy chicken salad sandwiches or a crisp chef salad or hearty beef and cheddar sandwich is easy and tasty. Every option is a winner.

Jeff and Shannon opened Turtle’s Donut Shoppe in Ponca City at the corner of Brookfield and Seventh in January 2002. After recently relocating to Hartford and Seventh, the

lifelong Kay County residents renovated the building, added a drive-through and opened their charming new spot in May 2021. Customers, old and new, are all welcomed with a smile, a “Hello!” and the feel that you’ve just stepped into a space that is familiar and cozy. Our community is fortunate to have access to such a fun, delicious place that produces such yummy creations (they have turtle-shaped donuts!). Plus, is there anyone who doesn’t want to start their day with some sprinkles? Happy Eating!!
