“We love your magazine.”

Letter from the Editor

Ponca City Monthly is a Member of the Society of Professional Journalists. We believe that public enlightenment is the forerunner of justice and the foundation of democracy. We strive to ensure a free exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough. We pledge to: Seek the Truth, and Report It; Minimize Harm; Act Independently; and to Be Accountable and Transparent. To read our full pledge, visit: spj.org/ethicscode.asp

That phrase is said to me a lot, and I always appreciate it. And I agreeI love it too. But I make sure to remind people when they pay me compliments, that it’s not just my magazine. We have a team of over 20 writers, editors, designers and others who make this magazine what it is. See the list to the left? That’s all the people it takes on a monthly basis to make this magazine happen. It’s a tall order, but we’ve got it down to a pretty exact science after four years.

And I really can’t brag on my team enough. Their hard work and dedication are what make this magazine so special.

Hayley Harrison works incredibly hard, and does it all with a smile. Her gentle heart is a blessing to have around our office. Hayley is such a talented writer and editor, and the sky really is the limit for her.

Jill Rowe always has the funniest stories and fills our office with laughter. Jill is an insanely-creative artist and designer and anytime a huge challenge is thrown at her, she rises to the occasion.

Robyn Ryan is always the first person to volunteer to help a fellow employee out, and Robyn and I work so well as a team that we joke that we have the same brain. Robyn always goes above and beyond not just for her coworkers, but for advertisers, as well.

Andy is one of the most talented designers I have ever met, and his industry experience makes our magazine layout POP. I love Andy’s light-hearted nature and his willingness to always listen to my crazy ideas. Andy and I are both dreamers. Carey, Marlys and Chelsea are writers for our magazine, and they each bring such unique viewpoints to their writing.

Carey is an award-winning journalist and our magazine is truly blessed to have her as a writer. Carey’s attention to detail and her investigativestyle of journalism produces interesting and impactful stories time and time again. If I ever need journalistic guidance or support, Carey is my go-to.

Marlys Cervantes’ insight into religion, education and the human spirit reveals hidden layers about whatever topic she is writing about. She’s also a wonderful and kind person and I am so glad to have her on our team.

Chelsea’s heart for our community and artistic viewpoint brings her readers on a journey and transports them into the story. Chelsea is one of the most organized, efficient and detail-oriented humans I’ve ever met, and Chelsea is the only other person I’ve met who loves office supplies as much as I do.

My staff of employees and writers are some of the most talented people I’ve ever met. And their hard work and enthusiasm for this magazine makes my job so easy.

Sacket Gallery & Studio Celebrating Local Talent

Jeremy and Theresa Sacket opened the Sacket Gallery & Studio in June 2023. Over the last year the Gallery has become a showcase of area talent featuring over 300 pieces of original art. Entering the space is like stepping into a carnival for your eyes. Gallerygoers are treated to many mediums, including art on canvas, collage, woodworking, driftwood sculptures, jewelry, photography and more.

The Gallery grew out of the Sackets deciding to “dream a little bigger,” as Theresa says. Originally, Theresa began looking for a studio space. She wanted a space outside her home to work on her art. When they found the space, they immediately knew it would make an ideal gallery due to the excellent lighting and interior layout. From there, they needed to spruce the space up a bit. They painted walls, installed hanging systems and

gathered display furniture. Theresa says their dream was to “make a collaborative space and celebrate our local talent.”

Theresa shares about the beginning stages of pulling things together. “It came together pretty organically. I thought it might be rough to fill up the space and find enough artists who wanted to be a part of the gallery, but a lot of people I didn’t even know came out of the woodwork. We filled up within our first month. We had 20 artists that wanted to be a part of it initially, and we now have 3.” Theresa says there are still ways they can make room for additional artists, so if you’re an area artist interested in showing your work, get in touch with them!

Theresa and Jeremy are both in the mix when it comes to greeting customers and working the

“We have loved getting to know all the artists who have been a part of the gallery and are thankful to all community members who have shown support! That being said, we are sad to report that the Sacket Gallery and Studio will be closing its doors by July 1st. There will be a final Meet the Artist Mixer on Friday, June 14th from 5pm -7pm. We will have refreshments and encourage everyone to come by and support our local artists at this event,” said Theresa Sacket.

Gallery floor, depending on their schedules. With Jeremy’s office located in the Gallery and Theresa’s studio space there, one of them can always be found. Theresa enjoys meeting gallerygoers and chatting with them. “There’s lots of stories to tell about the different artists. I like

JUNE 2024 7

telling everyone about the great talent we have in our town.” Both also admit that they enjoy being surrounded by so much beauty each day – and who could blame them! Theresa adds that it also challenges her to push herself as an artist and hone her skills even more. Jeremy goes on to add,

“The thing I like about this is, if this art wasn’t hanging here, it’d be in people’s closets. You know what I mean? Somewhere hidden. So, it does give a space for artists to actually show their work.”

Theresa does much of the behind-the-scenes work, as well as curating the space and managing the art that comes through the doors. As a part of the business, Theresa also maintains a very thorough website. The site features each artist with items in the gallery. It also includes a listing of all the items for sale. This is a great tool for anyone outside Ponca City who wants to purchase art. The Sackets welcome online sales and are more than happy to ship art to buyers.

The next project the Sackets are taking on at the Gallery will be hosting art classes. Their aim is to offer a space where local artists can teach classes based on their avenues of expertise. These will be a smaller workshop-type setting with room for

15-20 people. Be on the lookout for these offerings which will hopefully include sessions on collage work, graphite drawing, painting, figure drawing, photography, canvas & cocktails, beadmaking and more. Their goal is to offer classes for kids, teens and adults.

The Sackets also host a few Artist Mixers each year. Prior to these events, they rearrange and update the art on display. The mixers give gallerygoers a chance to see new pieces and meet the artists who have items on exhibit in the space. It also gives artists the chance to talk to other artists. The Sackets will be hosting their Meet the Artist Mixer on Friday, June 14, from 5-7 p.m. This will also be an evening to celebrate their first year in business.

Jeremy and Theresa are both artists themselves. Theresa says she has always been drawn to art

and has created art her whole life. She began exploring mediums like pastels and watercolors while still in elementary school. She took art classes throughout her academic career and still enjoys taking art classes for fun now. Theresa says watercolor is her favorite medium. Jeremy didn’t begin to dabble in art until about three years ago, though Theresa points out he’s always been creative in other ways. He doesn’t use paint brushes on any of his pieces, but focuses on using things like palette knives, rags and even his hands to manipulate paint. The couple occasionally collaborates on pieces, like some of the murals Theresa has created.

Both Jeremy and Theresa agree that their favorite thing about the Gallery is the people they get to interact with – artists and gallerygoers alike. They’ve had the pleasure of giving tours to different student groups, Scout groups, the Leadership Ponca City Class and others. Jeremy says they also have kids from nearby neighborhoods stop in to look at the art. The Gallery is a great place to look for gifts, as well. With items starting at around $10 and going up from there, shoppers can find one-of-a-kind items for anyone on their shopping list.

For more information about the Gallery contact Jeremy or Theresa Sacket at (580) 749-8008 or via email at sacketmedia@gmail.com. Sacket Gallery and Studio will be closing its doors by July 1st. There will be a final Meet the Artist Mixer on Friday, June 14th from 5pm -7pm at 719 E. Hartford Avenue. They will have refreshments and they encourage everyone to come by and support our local artists at this event.

Everyone is a Champion for Children at ‘Fish Fry for the Small Fry’

Ponca City offers world-class entertainment during the month of June, including the annual Ponca City Herb Festival, Sunny Dayz Mural Festival and the 101 Wild West Rodeo. However, the most delicious fundraising event of June is Dearing House’s, “ Fish Fry for the Small Fry.”

The 10th annual Fish Fry for the Small Fry will take place “Fryday,” June 21, at Standing Bear Park. The fun family event begins at 6 p.m. The celebration includes live music, children’s games and lots of delicious food. Teams will prepare their best recipes of fish, meat, sides and desserts for the crowd to sample. Each team

chooses their own menu and can compete for people’s choice awards.

The format is all-you-can-eat with tasting kits for $10. Children under 10 eat free with an adult tasting kit purchase. The addition of big tents to the site adds a welcome layer of comfort against Oklahoma’s unpredictable weather. “Tent Supporters” help offset this cost by sponsoring a tent pole for $30. Event sponsorships are $200. Donations can be made online at dearinghouse.com.

“It’s a fun tailgate event,” says Mark Bean, Dearing House Executive Director. “While it is a fish fry, the teams present their own unique spin on the food to win votes. We encourage teams to decorate their space with banners, t-shirts, etc., to show off their team and to be recognized for being champions for Dearing House and children!”

CAC: WHAT AND WHY?

Ponca City’s Dearing House Child Advocacy Center is a haven when a difficult experience needs describing. A child advocacy center is, by design, a comforting space for children to respond as they are questioned about their traumatic experience.

National numbers show one in four girls and one in six boys will experience sexual abuse before reaching adulthood. Often, the child knows their abuser. This can lead to children keeping quiet about the abuse for fear of being blamed, shamed or declared liars.

Dearing House is a nationally-certified child advocacy center. The staff provides an allencompassing list of services for child victims of crime and non-offending family members beginning at the Dearing House, itself. Some of these critical services include forensic interviews, sexual assault exams, crisis intervention and support at all stages of investigation and prosecutions. Staff and their caring expertise are available 24/7.

Sadly, the need for Dearing House Child Advocacy Center’s services continues to grow. During April, staff conducted 19 forensic interviews compared to six in April 2023. So far, Dearing House is averaging more than two forensic interviews each week.

Dearing House itself is a charming cottage donated by the Dearing family for use as a Child Advocacy Center. Mark says the rooms are cheerful and relaxing, unlike a police station or emergency room. “Dearing House provides the best possible conditions for a child to describe their experience without adding trauma or duplicating the efforts of the investigative agencies.”

REACHING OUT WITH KID GLOVES

Appealing snacks and a drink are waiting just inside the front door. A tour of the house and an introduction to the assembled investigators help relieve fear of the unknown. Soft furniture, bright colors, soothing sounds and inviting toys surround them. Behind the scenes, in another room, the police and DHS staff can witness the gently conducted interview while it is recorded for evidence. The result is this child victim is questioned one time while multiple disciplines get the information required to care for the child and gather evidence for possible criminal charges.

Forensic interview specialist Maggi Hutchason explains why questioning a child about a potential

sexual trauma presents a challenge for the interviewer. “Children can be easily confused by the wording of even well-intentioned questions when the officer does not have the same level of awareness of child development as a forensic interviewer at Dearing House.”

According to Maggi, law enforcement officers are trained by their municipalities and the state to respond to victims and investigate crimes. However, very little training specific to child sexual abuse and interviewing child victims is offered. Dearing House pays for law enforcement to receive special training in how to ask a young sexual assault victim most effectively about what happened. Every year, Ponca City’s Child Advocacy Center budgets an average $18,000 to pay for registration and expenses for partner agency staff to attend training and improve response to child victims of crime.

Maggi says, “The manner of questioning children is extremely important to support the credibility of the child victim and to protect the integrity of the evidence gathered. Dearing House is the best and most effective way to respond to children as the initial statement from the child is the foundation of a successful investigation that can determine the child's safety as well as potential criminal charges.”

Dearing House staff take to heart the need to create an environment that allows a fearful and traumatized child to “unload their burden on a grown-up whose job is to take that fear and give them hope,” she adds.

Maggi credits the interviewer’s specialized training in asking questions in such a way that increases free recall. These adults are neutral, nonintimidating and don’t flinch or show emotional

12 JUNE 2024
Alliance Health, now INTEGRIS Health Ponca City, brought an enthusiastic team to share their Fish Fry for the Small Fry entries and be champions for children. reaction to the child’s words. As a result, “The majority of the time, child victims are willing and able to give us more details than previously disclosed,” Maggi says. “It sounds trite to say we give children a voice, but without Dearing House, a child victim would likely be questioned repeatedly about what happened to them by agencies who need the information but risk getting wrong or incomplete details — or no information at all — which can lead to children left at risk and offenders not held accountable.”

VITAL AND UNENCUMBERED $$$

Proceeds from Fish Fry for the Small Fry provide important funding for the unexpected expenses that arise with each new case. Last year’s effort netted $15,000 for Dearing House’s annual budget.

“We plan well for the major expense categories such as payroll, utilities and insurance, but

no two days or family situations are ever the same and we can’t predict need, particularly 12 months in advance, how we may be needed,” Mark explains. “It means that we can buy gas cards so a parent can afford to take their child to a specialist in the metro. It means we can send a police officer or therapist to specialized training or replace the bedding for a victim so she doesn’t have a constant nightly reminder of her assault. It means that our mission of hearing, helping, healing children requires us to respond quickly and efficiently to unique challenges daily.”

Mark and Maggi agree it is difficult to predict how the trajectory of an abused child’s life is changed by the help they receive from Dearing House. It’s important that Dearing House is always ready, 24/7, for whatever a child needs.

And a Fish Fry is the answer.

Highway 60 Tire & Service

Always Ready to Help

“Our family business has been such a labor of love. My dad had a vision and Jesse brought it to life.” ~ Melissa Cecena

Highway 60 Tire & Service has operated in the Ponca City area for over a dozen years, and it has come a long way during that time. Owner Larry Nixon started the business in August of 2012, after years in the construction business and having worked in a tire shop before that.

About a year later, he invited his daughter Melissa and son-in-law Jesse Cecena to move from California to join him in the business. In the short time he’d known Jesse, he felt he was a great fit as someone who was a “people person and a hard worker.” So, his offer was, if he stayed a year and it worked out, they would keep the business open, and he’d give him 49% with them continuing as partners. It worked.

Both Nixon and Jesse agreed that their teamwork brought the business solid success, and it continued to grow. Initially they had a 2,400-square-

foot building, with one mechanic working for them and no alignment machine. If they worked on larger trucks, it had to be outside. They needed more space and to own their buildings and land. Nixon also wanted to be sure Jesse and Melissa were set up for the future.

Their move to the current, larger space took time and a bit of patience because they needed the building and two lots at the same time. At one point, they could’ve purchased the building but not the lots. Finally, in a bit of a gambling chess-like move, when they knew the building was likely to be auctioned soon, they bought the two lots and hoped for the best. They got just that.

Since this all happened right before the pandemic hit, other decisions had to be made. Nixon says, “There was no choice but to move forward.”

The two men kept working and servicing customers even during the pandemic and their remodel. In talking about this time, Jesse remembers having a customer call when one of his tractor tires needed repaired, but the farmer had COVID-19. Jesse had

JUNE 2024 17

him put it in the back of his truck and drive over; the man just stayed in his truck while Jesse got it out, did the repair and put it back. He told him on the phone before he came, he’d just catch up with him in a couple weeks for payment after he was healthy.

This was the kind of service that could be expected from Highway 60 Tire & Service. While other shops were closing due to the pandemic, they were serving existing customers like this gentleman and gaining new customers who were looking for a place to take care of their tire needs.

They closed on the purchase of the new building Feb. 24, 2020, and their remodel began in March. With the help of numerous friends who pitched in painting and with the remodel work, the new space was ready to open May 4, 2020. It was sooner than either man expected.

They now have 13,000 square feet, and their warehouse alone is larger than their previous shop. Nixon remembers when they first walked into the new shop area, and he said to Jesse, “This is more shop than we’ll ever need.”

Within a year, however, they needed another building to house their new

alignment machine because there was no room for it with their growth. They now keep nine mechanics busy and could hire another if they found a qualified person ready to work.

At Highway 60 Tire & Service, they pride themselves on quality customer service. Nixon says, “We do it all: lawnmower repair to big grader tires.” In addition, Jesse reminds us they have a 24-hour road service that can be reached through their shop number: 580-762-2332.

Shop hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon, and you can find more information about their services and products online: Highway60tire.com.

Larry Nixon and Jesse Cecena have built Highway 60 Tire & Service with solid customer service and quality work. They meet the needs of the community in all areas. If you find yourself needing anything in the area, just ask them. My bet is, they’ll have an answer for you. As Nixon says, “We’re not going anywhere.”

Completely Quilted Bernina Sewing Celebrates 17 Years In Business

Completely Quilted Bernina Sewing Center is located at 315 E. Grand Avenue in the heart of downtown Ponca City. Owned and run by Paul and Suzy Taylor and their daughter Nancy Laffy, the store celebrates 17 years in business this year. Of the journey so far, Nancy says, “We’re really thankful for how much support we’ve gotten over the last 17 years. It’s wild that we’ve got customers that are our friends and we’ve met so many people. Helping people make things that are beautiful that they give to their family – that’s just so fun. We’re really thankful to be able to do that. We just want people to have a good experience when they come in here.”

Suzy says she began quilting when her children were young and soon became very passionate about the craft. She joined the Pioneer Area Quilters Guild and began attending show & share type events where attendees would take quilts they’d finished and share the finished projects with other members. Suzy was soon approached about finishing quilts for other members. What started as a way to help support her quilting hobby eventually morphed into a family business.

Suzy went from finishing quilts on a regular sewing machine to finishing them on a long arm machine. As work continued to pour in, the family began to discuss turning Suzy’s talent for quilting into a business. Paul Taylor realized from the beginning the family would need to diversify their offerings in order to be successful. After some research, the Taylors decided

to become an authorized dealer of Bernina sewing machines. Completely Quilted not only sells the machines, but Paul is also a certified Bernina technician and can repair Bernina machines as well as work on other brands of machines. Along with the Bernina product line, the store also carries fabric, notions and other items needed for sewers and quilters. The shop is both product- and service-oriented, with each family member focusing on a service. Paul works on machines. Suzy specializes in finishing quilts, and Nancy does custom embroidery.

One fascinating thing about quilt shops is that the fabric carried at each shop is a unique reflection of both the owners and the customers that shop there. Shop owners are purchasing fabrics that inspire them and

fabrics they believe their customers will love. The combination of the two creates a oneof-a-kind mixture that varies from shop to shop. Completely Quilted also buys from quilt shop exclusive fabric companies, meaning companies that are only selling to quilt shops and not big box stores. You won’t find any of the fabrics they offer at your local hobby store.

When you walk into Completely Quilted your eyes immediately set upon bright bolts of fabric in every direction. It’s like being hugged by color. The store sells Bernina sewing machines that range from the very affordable entry-level machines to the more expensive machines. Price points range from $400-$20,000. There are floor models available that customers can test out to determine which machine is the best fit for them. Suzy and Nancy both believe it’s

JUNE 2024 23

very important to talk to customers and learn their particular sewing needs when it comes to matching a customer with a machine. They also sell sewing machine cabinets, allowing customers to get their entire set up in one stop.

Completely Quilted hosts Beginner Quilting Classes where Nancy and Suzy walk attendees through all the steps of creating a quilt. The class lasts four weeks and there’s no experience required. At the end of the four weeks, each student has a bound and finished quilt and has acquired the skills necessary to make their own quilts. Since they began keeping track in 2014, the shop has hosted over 130 first-time students in their Beginning Quilting Classes. Suzy says,

“When people come in, we want to make sure we greet them like old friends, even if it’s their first time in the shop. We try to make everybody feel like they’re the best thing that’s happened to us today with them walking through the door.”

The store also sells patterns, scissors, thread, rulers and other items needed for quilters and sewers alike. As well as carrying patterns from various lines, Suzy and Nancy have both designed their own patterns which can be found in the store. Also

showcased around the store are sample items like bags and quilts made to give customers a preview of new fabric lines. These items are typically for sale as well as being useful guides to what to do with that fabric you’ve been wanting to use.

Each year, Completely Quilted participates in statewide Shop Hop events. Two smaller events take place in the spring and fall (April and October, respectively), with the bigger Shop Hop happening from June 1-July 31 each summer. These events encourage attendees to visit participating stores around Oklahoma and create quilt squares at each location with the goal of creating a quilt with all the coordinating squares at the end of the event. Though every shop does their finished quilt differently, Nancy and Suzy enjoy the challenge

of creating a unique piece that incorporates the squares from each participating location. These events bring quilters from all over the state into Ponca City each year, making a positive impact on our community’s economy.

Whether you’re thinking about learning to quilt or sew, or just need a little color therapy in your life, Completely Quilted is worth the visit. You can find out more about Completely Quilted Bernina Sew Center by following them on Facebook. You can also sign up for their monthly email newsletter via their website at https://cqsew.com. Is Reaping Rewards of Science, Passion and Hard Work

Editor’s Note: The following photos featuring blooming flowers were taken last year, and as such, the flowers shown in this article may not be available for purchase at the time of print.

Anna Ballagh may be small in stature, but she is big in accomplishment. The Jet and Nash area native and Oklahoma Bible Academy graduate topped off her nine years at Oklahoma State with a PhD in plant and soil sciences. Now, Anna, 29, is growing into her chosen profession as a flower farmer.

Growing cut flowers as a crop is more than just taking a front yard flower garden and multiplying its size by an acre or two. To sell flowers for a living, one must plan, months earlier, for what the buyer wants. The un-fun part is the work it takes to have the flowers primed and ready to harvest when the buyer needs them.

Did we mention our Anna has a doctorate? Her love of agriculture and the science of farming is helping Anna earn the respect of florists and bouquet lovers across the area. She continues to focus on field trials and research as she carefully grows her business.

“My PhD allowed me to learn the scientific method and deductive reasoning to implement and partner with my husband on our farm,” Anna explains. “It’s very rewarding to put the skills I learned to use in our operation.”

A benefit to growing her cut flower crop lies in her location, 4051 E. Furguson Road, just south of Kildare. “I’m surrounded by crop fields and our neighbors have been exceptionally nice in supporting me.”

To fully appreciate this significance, it helps to understand farmers may use an herbicide, such as the popular glyphosate marketed as Round-Up®, to control plant pests on their crop fields. Unfortunately, glyphosate can drift onto unintended areas based upon wind direction. Spraying an herbicide could devastate her flower farm should the wind blow the volatile glyphosate her way.

“I’m just appreciative they are taking me into account and making decisions based off knowing there’s a sensitive crop growing nearby,” she says.

Anna’s husband, Brent, has a master’s degree in plant sciences. He also owns Progressive Agronomics, LLC, a soil

sampling business. When not attending their wheat , soybean, corn and milo crops, Brent helps Anna with the cut flower crop. They are joined by his parents, a local friend and Anna’s mother in the flower crop care. Her sister Addie designed the Sown logo.

Anna describes harvesting the crop as a process that begins with cutting the stems

during the coolest part of the day – often pre-dawn. The staff critically eyes each flower for hydration and development stage before choosing the best for that day’s harvest. Then the flowers are immediately put into a bucket of a special water solution to maintain the stem’s hydration. As buckets fill with flowers, they are rushed to the “cooler room” — a refrigerated space that prolongs the flower’s vigor. From there, the stems are re-cut, lower leaves are stripped, and the stems are placed into a second, sterilized bucket of chlorine solution. The addition of sugars and carbohydrates to the solution helps feed the flowers and prolong their beauty and performance. For final sale, stems are transported in a third bucket, also sterilized. “Buckets have to be super clean,” Anna says. “There’s lots of cleaning buckets involved.”

Newly-emerged seedlings are at their most delicate stage. “To start her cut flower crop, Anna hand-plants cubes of soil with the tiny, tiny seeds, one seed at a time, in a special room in Anna’s office. The trays are covered with plastic wrap to assist with germination. When older, the trays of baby plants will be transferred to the greenhouse to continue maturing. (Photo by Carey Head)”

SOWN Continued from page 30

This year Anna is sowing 50 plant types for her flower farm crop. When choosing which flowers to grow, Anna relies on her experience conducting trials to earn her advanced degrees. Trial and error are how she determines which cut flower varieties to grow and which to table for another time.

“I have a lot of space, which is a blessing because I don’t have to be super picky with what I grow. It’s nice to have the space to be able to just play with it. Ask me in 10 years and I will have a much better way of answering and be more educated,” she laughs.

As for growing what her buyers want, Anna says, “Florists really like the long stems because it allows them to work with the flowers in a greater range of arrangements. Vase life is also important — longevity once cut. Different flowers all have different vase lives. I was kind of worried about that going into last year’s farmers markets, but people were telling me their bouquets were lasting all of two weeks, which is incredible.”

Anna includes a care card with every bouquet to help her customers enjoy their purchase longer. It describes the importance of using the provided flower food, changing the water, rinsing the vase, removing spent blooms and trimming stems with each fresh water change.

To reach her customers, Anna says, “I sell custom bouquets, market bouquets, ‘bucket of blooms,’ wholesale stems, ‘you-pick’ experiences, bouquet subscriptions, and different workshop events.”

She co-hosts events with The Harvest Hall, a downtown Ponca City venue. Anna explains, “it just opened last year as well, it is super cute. The owner, Derion Schieber, wanted to start doing girls night events and reached out to see if I would want to put on a bouquet workshop last summer. After that did well, I mentioned doing a wreath workshop and people loved it!!”

Both events sold out and plans are underway to repeat the workshops this year. Check the Facebook pages of Sown, facebook.com/ sownbyanna, and Harvest Hall, facebook.com/theharvesthallpc, to stay on top of workshop dates. She continues, “We will both post on our Facebook pages announcing dates so they can follow our pages to find out more! I would say the same for estimates on you-pick opening dates. It’ll depend on weather. We will start selling at the Ponca City Farmers Market in June. People can message my page or email me at anna@sownok.com to order a custom bouquet throughout the summer or ask any question. My website, sownok.com; Facebook and Instagram, @sownbyanna, are the best places to find info and follow along. I have an email newsletter I’m starting that people can sign up for on my website.”

Farm-to-table is a trending business model. Anna’s Kay County-grown florals are putting a hand-tied twist on this. Instead of days spent in transportation from field to end user, Sown brings the beauty to buyers within hours of harvest . It doesn’t get any fresher than that.

32 JUNE 2024

Merrick’s Wild Ride

Merrick’s Custom Leather Handbags & Boutique

Merrick’s Custom Leather Handbags & Boutique, owned by Nick & Merrick Hall, is located in downtown Ponca City at 203 E. Grand. Merrick says she always knew she would be an entrepreneur. She also knew whatever she pursued was going to be something she was deeply passionate about. Today, Merrick owns her own business. She creates and sews custom leather handbags and other items, sources beautiful and unique jewelry and works alongside family and friends. To do her story justice though, we need to go back just a bit further.

Merrick shares this about her childhood and early entrepreneurial roots. “My grandparents owned the monogramming business here in town. They sewed and quilted, and they loved our downtown. My dad owns a construction company. Everybody in my family was self-employed. I knew as a little girl I wanted to work for myself. I had entrepreneurship in me.” Another significant part of growing up for Merrick was spending time with her grandmother, Linda Sue, who taught her how to sew at a very young age. Linda Sue stressed to Merrick the importance of knowing this lost art.

Merrick’s initial venture into the business world was as a cosmetologist. She began running her own salon and boutique in 2016. As she began stocking the boutique portion of her business with inventory, she couldn’t help but be disappointed with the selection of purses she was seeing. She mentioned this to her

husband who encouraged her to make some herself. Merrick was unsure about sewing leather, but her husband Nick didn’t have any doubts. He was her biggest supporter from the very beginning.

JUNE 2024 35

Merrick started taking custom orders and creating purses on the side, as well as running the boutique and salon.

When the COVID-19 pandemic swept our nation, business began to slow down. Merrick knew she had to do something to keep her business going. She took her sewing machine home at this point and began taking even more custom orders. She also started doing Facebook Live sales to get her products into the market. Merrick’s custom items were a big hit and she says, “since then, I never looked back.” Once she was able to open her salon again, she went back part-time so she could further pursue making custom handbags. Today, Merrick’s ships their custom items to 45 states and Canada. Merrick adds, “It's pretty wild if you really think about it.” Merrick has had the opportunity to become friends with many of her customers, near and far. She’s had customers visit from Washington and California.

Merrick’s has nine employees, five full-time and four part-time. Over the years, she and her staff have collaborated to create 32 custom designs. The very first design Merrick came up with was a simple 13” x 15” handbag with a pocket, appropriately named, “Linda Sue.” This bag is still in production today and can

be found on the shelves of the boutique. This is just one of the ways Merrick strives to keep her Granny’s spirit alive in her work each day. They also ring a set of her grandmother’s bells every time they sell a bag.

Each leather item Merrick’s sells is handmade in their shop. When they create a bag, they also make a full set, meaning a matching wallet and clutch. Once a pattern

is chosen, they move to materials. They decide if they want to use cowhide or embossed leather. Whatever is chosen will be the main component and the other materials (like backing, straps, pockets, fringe and hardware) must coordinate with it. Next, the materials are cut. Merrick says this is one of the most important steps in the process. One wrong cut and the item won’t come together correctly. For each product, they choose the outer materials as well as backing that will make up the inside of the piece. This means every piece is two layers thick. Once the prep work has been completed, the pieces are ready to be sewn. Merrick and her mom, Kim, sew all the items. To finish the items off, Merrick signs the inside of every piece.

Finished pieces get photographed and introduced on Merrick’s Live Sales that take place on Facebook Monday-Friday. The times

JUNE 2024 37

of the sales vary, so be sure to sign up for the VIP Text Group to stay in the know! These events often feature discounted items as well. Each week they create 20-30 new items, so there’s always something new and fun for customers to see.

While most of the items created by Merrick and her team are designs of their own making, they also welcome custom orders. Merrick says they carry 180-190 different styles of leather for bags and around 50 different leathers for fringe. Anyone is welcome to come in and view the different styles to put together their own custom piece. Merrick says the fringe can also be taken off any finished item if fringe doesn’t fit a customer’s style.

Custom made items in the boutique start at $50-60 and go up from there. Merrick’s also carries a line of small gift items, candles and clothing. They are also beginning to create smaller custom leather items, per customer request. Merrick says they try to listen to their customers when it comes to creating new designs. If customers want something smaller, they go smaller, and vice versa. She eventually plans to add denim, as well as a boot line to their inventory. Merrick’s also carries a stunning selection of new and vintage turquoise jewelry, Navajo Pearls and other authentic stones she sources herself out of New Mexico and Arizona. Merrick’s offers Sezzle, Klarna and PayPal in 4 for customers who might want bigger ticket items but would like to use a payment plan.

While the pace of what Merrick has created keeps her incredibly busy, she is also incredibly grateful. She says the team of people she’s surrounded herself with keep her organized and help her not get overwhelmed.

Merrick adds, “I never have a day where I don’t want to go to work. I love what I do. It’s fun. It lets me be creative. I get to be with my friends and family. My mom’s been the coolest thing, to get to work with her every single day. I know my Granny loves that.” She goes on to say, “I couldn’t do it without my family. I’ve been very blessed. My mom works with me every day. My husband’s the biggest support system you could ever have. He pushes me all the time. My in-laws watch my little boy. My dad’s a huge portion of everything. I have a very good family and my friend circle is outstanding. And since we’ve moved into this building, the community has been really, really good to me.”

DR. MICHELLE KEYLON, SCOTT MORRIS INDUCTED INTO NOC DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI HALL OF FAME

Dr. Michelle Jeffries Keylon and Scott Morris were inducted into the Northern Oklahoma College Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame April 7th at NOC Tonkawa inside the Renfro Center.

Dr. Keylon (Class of 1992) is the superintendent at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, while Morris (Class of 1991) is the boys’ basketball/golf coach at Stillwater High School.

Also recognized were the NOC Roustabouts on their 60th anniversary and the NOC nursing program.

The NOC Legacy Scholarship was awarded to Amy Cronister, an incoming freshman from Enid who will attend NOC Enid in the fall of 2024. Her father, David, is a 2011 graduate of NOC Enid earning an Arts and Science associate degree. The scholarship award is $1,000.

Keylon was introduced by Karri Morrill (Class of 2003), and Morris was introduced by NOC Regent Jami Groendyke (Class of 2003).

Keylon praised NOC for their presence in the Tonkawa community.

“This is an amazing honor,” she said. “I know the work you (NOC) do in the Tonkawa community and that is so important. I feel like I grew up at NOC as I attended so many events here, including dance recitals, prom and other events. It

always felt like home to me.”

I wouldn’t be here today without NOC and my family,” she added.

Morris followed his father’s (Gil) footsteps playing at Northern.

“I was one of the few high school players who fantasized about playing basketball at

a junior college,” Morris joked. “But playing at NOC was a dream of mine, and I felt so fortunate the coach (Mick) Weiberg took a chance on me.”

He thanked the Weiberg family.

“They mean so much to me and how they influenced my life in so many ways,” he added.

Each was formally inducted by NOC interim president Diana Watkins.

“Northern is honored to recognize you this evening,” Watkins said to the new inductees. “It has been my pleasure to visit with you and meet your family and friends who are here tonight to support you. We are honored that you chose Northern, and we are proud of your accomplishments and the excellence you bring to your respective fields.”

NOC has inducted 57 distinguished alums into the Hall of Fame.

Distinguished alums are selected during the fall, nominations are accepted starting Nov. 1. For more information, contact Kayla Wooderson, Director of Alumni & Community Relations, at kayla. wooderson@noc.edu .

YOUR MANLINESS IS KILLING YOU

JUNE IS MEN’S HEALTH MONTH

Men are significantly less likely than women to see a doctor or report health symptoms to a healthcare provider. In fact, only 60% of men go to the doctor for yearly routine check-ups and 40% of men won’t go to a doctor until they think something might be seriously wrong. More than seven million American men have not seen a doctor in more than ten years. In a recent study, 2/3 of men wouldn’t go see a doctor if they were experiencing chest pain.

On average, men are less healthy and have a shorter lifespan than women. According to Men’s Health Network, men are less likely than women to adopt preventive health measures, are more likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors, less likely to have health insurance, more likely to work in dangerous occupations, and more likely to put off seeking medical attention. The overall mortality rate is 41% higher for men than women and it’s higher for men for 8 out of the 10 leading causes of death – including heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. In 1920, women outlived men by an average of one year. Today women outlive men on average by more than five years.

June is Men’s Health Month and is a time to encourage men to be proactive about their health including setting goals for their own health and wellness. Men are encouraged this month to find a primary healthcare provider and make an appointment for a check up and preventive screenings, to get active, eat healthy, pay attention to their mental health including getting enough sleep and managing stress, and to avoid unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, texting while driving, drinking in excess, and not wearing a seatbelt.

Many men were raised to be tough – not to cry, complain, show signs of weakness, and were instructed to ignore aches and pains and to play through injuries. Being tough, though, is killing men. Many illnesses, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, can

be treated or cured if caught early.

Women can and do make a difference in men’s health. 20% of men report seeing a doctor so their significant other or other loved one will stop nagging them. Women can help the men in their lives by helping to recognize symptoms that may be health warning signs. Things to look out for include: changes in bowel or bladder habits that could indicate prostate, kidney, or bladder problems; impotence or erectile dysfunction which are often caused by an underlying health problem such as diabetes, clogged arteries, or high blood pressure; persistent backaches, changes in the color of urine or stool, obvious changes in warts or moles, unusual lumps, recurrent chest pains or headaches, a nagging cough, unexplained weight loss, and extreme fatigue can all be signs of a serious health problem. Women can not only point out these signs and encourage a medical check-up when seen in the men they love, but they can also help the men in their lives to adopt healthier habits. Significant others can find an exercise routine that is enjoyable for both and together can shop and prepare heart healthy meals. Women might also assist with finding a health provider who has weekend or evening appointments or a medical office that is close to her husband’s work. Women could even make simultaneous or backto-back appointments for her and her spouse so that they can go together.

Good health leads to better physical and mental performance in sports, work, and in life.

Men are role models for their children and for others around them who will be influenced by the example they set in taking care of their health and getting routine check-ups. Instead of “manning up” and not seeking preventive healthcare or medical attention for health symptoms, June is a great time to “man up” and create a healthier lifestyle, establish care with a primary provider, and start the journey to a healthier and longer life!

Get Fit!WITH KERA KESTER

Happy June, everyone! Can you believe we are coming upon the halfway mark of the year already!? Summertime is here, and many people have reached their fitness goals or started the pursuit of them. Because of this, it can seem easy to slack off on nutrition or struggle to build healthy nutrition habits. One of the best nutrition habits that one can grow in is taking in good vitamins and minerals for efficient bodily functioning. Yes, we have all heard a dozen or more times since childhood that we must eat our vegetables in order to get our daily nutrient needs. However, how many of us are actually eating ENOUGH vegetables to supply those daily needs?

An analysis from Harvard, as well as The American Heart Association, recommend 4-5 servings of vegetables per day. One serving is approximately 80 grams. Now, as beneficial as it can be to use a food scale all throughout the day, not everyone wants to do that. Therefore, it is wise to think of sure-fire ways to make sure we are getting 80 grams or close to it per day. Here, are three ways to help ensure our daily vegetable needs are being met.

1. Eat one vegetable-heavy meal per day

There are some tasty meals out there that rely heavily on vegetables as the main ingredients. From a variety of soups, veggie kebabs and salads to a sweet-tooth fulfilling smoothie,

there are insane amounts of yummy options! Soups are also helpful with finding new vegetables that you enjoy. A big reason some don’t enjoy veggies is because they haven’t experienced a lot of tasty ones! Whether you are having morning breakfast or breakfast for dinner, an omelet is another popular go-to meal. Tip: If having a salad everyday does not sound intriguing to you, then switching these meal choices out for one or multiple meals each week will help keep the excitement of eating veggies alive.

2. Substitute food products

Okay, so let’s say you’re not that into soups, salads or smoothies … well, I have good news for you. There is another way! Instead of restricting yourself from meals that you love, just change out certain food products for vegetables. I’ll give you three of my favorite examples! One, if you want pizza, try using a cauliflower pizza crust instead and double up on the veggie toppings. Two, if you want spaghetti, try using zucchini or squash

noodles instead of wheat noodles. There are many types of vegetable noodle makers out there in many stores. Additionally, certain vegetables like mushrooms or spinach pair very well with being added to any type of sauces that you make or enjoy. And last but not least, if you want a nice juicy burger, make a veggie patty and season it just the way you like it!

Tip: If you have a blender, blend specific veggies into your mixes for a seamless and unnoticeable addition to homemade crusts, buns and granolas, for example!

3. Incorporate a daily veggie snack

It is super easy to find ourselves snacking on things – chips or chocolate cookies. Substituting those food options for a bowl of broccoli and carrots

If

with ranch dressing will help tremendously! If you enjoy the foods above too much to let them go, then a good habit would be swapping out half of the serving of your chips for a vegetable with a yummy dressing or sauce that you enjoy. I enjoy chips, so one of my favorite things to do is swap half of the chips I’d normally eat for the addition of salsa and some carrots on the side along with it. Tip: Too much restriction can lead to bingeing or viewing food in a negative way. Be careful with the all or nothing approach while dealing with snacking or food products.

One of the greatest things we’ll do in life is tend to and care for the body we’ve been given on this earth. You may be surprised with how much better you feel and move when you give it the nutrients that it thrives on and utilizes for everyday functioning. I hope this article gave you some new ideas or at least inspired you in some way. Thank you for taking the time to read it. As always, much love to you and hoping many blessings come your way!

Baked to Perfection

Cheyenne’s

The Lazy Glaze

After having just opened The Lazy Glaze for business last February, Cheyenne Harbeson is gearing up for her first large event with the Herb Festival on June 1st, and her creativity moves past her baking to her marketing perfection. Cheyenne is anything but lazy in her approach to her business or her life.

The Lazy Glaze’s Facebook welcome page tags her company as “A home bakery ran by a stay at home mom of two lovely boys!” One of those adorable boys is Theo, who is about to turn 2, and the other boy (they both are quite precious) is Jackson, who was born January 15th.

Yes, that is the January right before the February when she opened her bakery. Cheyenne knows herself and, having gone through severe post-partum depression twice before, she knew the feeling and that she needed to do something to pull herself out of it. So, still healing from her

most recent C-section, Cheyenne set out to give herself something personal to show up for every day. With this, she had reason for both her family and for her own goals. She says, “I am an individual. There’s great satisfaction in being needed.”

Cheyenne had always been good at helping others achieve their dreams. The bakery gave her tangible goals to work through depression while she also started a business that could grow over time. Her goals were front and center.

She had already worked in food service, having started at 13 with Stagecoach in Newkirk, first washing dishes, then on waitstaff, and finally working with their catering services. She explains, “I learned to be kind and consistent, but not a pushover.”

That experience has served her well in her new endeavor because she can

make time for her family, which was her husband Jacob’s only real concern when she first started the business. Family time has always been important to them, and a new business could certainly get in the way of that. The couple already work around Jacob’s work as both a firefighter with PCFD and with his family’s plumbing business. Cheyenne has found that she is able to schedule her time planning, preparing the different types of dough, baking and all other aspects of the business around quality time with her family.

Some business processes have been trial and error, but Cheyenne enjoys the creativity of the processes. She said Jacob told her, “A failure isn’t a failure, it’s a lesson.” She had to figure in her time along with the cost of the product, for instance. She understands that, with some things, you learn as you go. If she gets stressed, she says she allows herself a 10-minute freakout and then she’s done.

JUNE 2024 45
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

The growth Cheyenne looks toward is that of leaving a legacy. Just like they may well have the plumbing business for their sons to consider as a career path, Cheyenne would like her business to eventually grow into one that could be handed down in this way, too. She would love to see it grow into a bakery and bistro after the boys are in school. She envisions it will “feel like grandma’s.” If you see the hundredyear-old butcher block table she works on, you can see her point. It belonged to Jacob’s great-grandfather, and when I asked about it, Cheyenne said, “It’s the one material thing we’d have firefighters get out if we had a fire here. We can replace anything else.” She is certainly building more memories on it now.

In the same way, she wants to know if a client isn’t satisfied with a product they buy. She says, “Baking is scientific and finicky. You don’t always know until you eat it.”

Her growing business is on its way. She will even announce a second person joining the business to expand its offerings at the Herb Festival, and you don’t want to miss out on all the wonderful baked goods and fun items she will have under her tan tent.

Find The Lazy Glaze on Facebook, email Cheyenne at Thelazyglaze@gmail.com, or give her a call at 580-716-6299. You will find numerous tasty treats for your party or gift needs, or just a personal delicacy. Or, check her out under the tan tent at the Herb Festival on June 1st to see all she has to offer! You will not be disappointed.

The Lazy Glaze

Charming, kind and ready to share her love of baking with our community, Cheyenne Harbeson launched The Lazy Glaze in February of 2024. With a focus on sweet loaves, cookies and mini bundt cakes, Harbeson is a self-taught baker whose passion for cooking has led to a creative home-bakery business.

If you’re looking for soft, melt-in-your-mouth cookies, look no further. The Lazy Glaze cookies are indulgent, big and the perfect vehicle for Harbeson’s creativity. The lemon Oreo cheesecake cookie is divine. The cream cheese stuffed red velvet white chocolate chip is decadent. The brown butter chocolate chip is tall and chewy. She develops and releases delicious specialty flavors such as Cinco de Mayo, Biscoff stuffed with cookie butter and cinnamon roll cookies. Be warned, becoming smitten with these cookies can

lead to heartbreak as the specialty flavors are known to sell out quickly.

The strawberry cream cheese mini bundts are a favorite on the menu. Airier than a pound cake, these adorable, little gems not only instantly elevate the mood of the day, but the flavor is also magnified. The creamy, perfectly tangy, cream cheese frosting balances the sweetness of the cake. They’re almost too cute to eat. Almost.

Among the ooey gooey cookies and airy mini bundt cakes lie the flavored bread loaves, the first items to be offered by The Lazy Glaze. With classic flavors such as banana, lemon blueberry and coffee cake, Harbeson is exceeding the traditional bread expectations with specialty loaves. Cherry almond with vanilla glaze, Bailey’s Irish Cream dark chocolate with chocolate ganache, and coconut lime are a small sampling of the

LET’S TALK ABOUT IT …

Chocolate … If you read this article on the regular, it’s no secret that I caught a lot of slack for my dislike of pickles a few months ago. Well, buckle up, because I can already feel the melancholy thoughts that my disliking chocolate will cause. I don’t hate it; I don’t like it. I never crave it. It always surprises people because if there is one food on earth we can all get behind, it has to be chocolate, right? Nope. Hot fudge sundae? Either keep that hot fudge or keep that sundae. Chocolate sheet cake? Gross. Give me a piece of fried chicken instead. And it is crazy how many people don’t believe me. Like in my 43 years on earth I haven’t been exposed to the “right” chocolate. No. I do not want to try one bite. I see the light slowly fading from their chocolateloving eyes as they realize I’m not kidding. Sorry, chocolate. It’s not me. It’s you.

Story & Photos By Amy Dewitt Geurin | Contributing Writer

As June unfolds, I find myself reflecting on the quiet that has settled over our beloved Ponca City Schools. With the academic year now behind us, our once bustling hallways and classrooms sit silent. The absence of our students’ laughter and the daily interactions with our dedicated teachers create a noticeable void. The energy they brought is deeply missed.

The end of the school year always brings a mix of emotions. For us in the administration, the school feels empty without the vibrant presence of our students and staff. Their enthusiasm and commitment are what make our school community truly special.

Despite the current quiet, there is much happening behind the scenes. We are already hard at work preparing for the upcoming school year. This summer, we are focused on planning new programs, reviewing and updating curricula, and organizing professional development opportunities for our teachers. One of our key priorities is enhancing our STEM curriculum to ensure we are wellprepared for any future shifts to education.

Hello, Ponca City!

Summer break also allows us to carry out essential maintenance and upgrades to our school facilities. Several schools in our district are undergoing significant improvements, including the installation of new HVAC systems at West Middle School to provide better air quality and more comfortable learning environments when we welcome everyone back in the fall. We are renovating the main office at the High School to help provide a more welcoming entrance for our guests and students. Our Concert Hall classrooms are nearly finished and will be ready for students this fall. At Wildcat Academy, we have a new secure entrance being added, and our STEM academy outdoor upgrades are soon to begin.

Reflecting on the past year, I am filled with pride at how our community has navigated the challenges we faced. The resilience and adaptability shown by our students and staff have been truly inspiring. It is amazing that no matter what happens, our community rallies behind our schools and the children we serve. These experiences motivate us to create an even more supportive and innovative learning environment moving forward.

Staying connected with our community remains a top priority, even during these quieter months. We are committed to listening and hearing the goals and concerns of our community. This past year, we surveyed our parents, staff, and leaders to help give us the most information to make informed decisions. We have a goal to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all our stakeholders. Your voices are essential in helping us foster a collaborative and inclusive educational experience.

As we progress through June, the anticipation of a new school year grows stronger. I eagerly look forward to the day we can welcome back our students and teachers, whose return will fill our schools with life, laughter, and learning once more. Until then, please know that we are dedicated to making sure everything is in place for a safe, enriching, and successful new academic year. I can’t wait for the fall and watching our Wildcats return! Enjoy your summer, Ponca City!

Seeing Red in June

While doing some research on events related to June (and of course related to gardening), several sites and articles spoke of June as a time of reflection and transformation. June events include Father’s Day on June 16, Juneteenth on June 19 (celebrating the end of slavery in 1865) and the summer solstice for the Northern Hemisphere on June 20. And then, there is the color red which comes into play. Many gardeners “see red” in June with flowers and produce.

And red is a great way to tie all these events together. Well, maybe not Father’s Day, but you can encourage your dad or father figure to eat more beets and drink some hibiscus tea for heart health. I’ll get to that in a minute.

June Celebrations

Juneteenth has a direct symbolistic thread to the color red. Red represents the blood shed by innumerable African Americans in the struggle for freedom. So, you will see a lot of red in Juneteenth festivities and events. In the garden, hibiscus and roses (both edible) are in full bloom. Both are edible flowers, though I prefer the hibiscus flavor over the rose. Most from-the-garden red things have great blood/health properties (here is that father part), such as lowering blood pressure, supporting liver health and lowering cholesterol. Another favorite red thing to harvest in June is a personal favorite of mine: beets.

Beets

Though not always red, beets are great raw or cooked. You can roast, pickle or grate. Chop and dice. Add to salads or use as a side. If you planted beets in the spring, go pull some of those babies up and roast them with some sweet potatoes and baby potatoes for Father’s Day. So yummy and good for you. If you didn’t end up with beets in the yard, they should be available at the Farmer’s Market. Beet greens can also be used in salads, added to sauces or sauteed like spinach. Waste not, want not.

Just to tie in the summer solstice for good measure, the celebration colors are lighter, including yellows, oranges and golds, but a good bonfire to celebrate summer solstice plays into those red tones. Fire is always a rebirth of sorts, just be careful when and where you have that fire going. My chiminea will be the in-town go-to, but I know plenty of people with those lovely fire pits and my country dwellers have the bonfire aspect covered.

Eat Your Reds

Other red-toned veggies and fruits to be harvested include the aforementioned beets and hibiscus. Be on the lookout for red kale, cherries, radishes, strawberries, sand plums, rhubarb and red

onions. If you are lucky, you might find some early raspberries. My favorite deep red fruit in my yard is the sand cherries. I’m fudging a bit here. The berries are a deep red, but they are ready to pick when they turn black. I have two big bushes and they are loaded with fruit. About the size of a healthy blueberry, they have a large seed that needs to be disposed of before eating or baking. They freeze okay, but I like to use them in coffeecake and who doesn’t love coming across a frozen coffeecake? Yum! One thing to remember when planting these lovely bushes is that the sand cherry can get seven to 10 feet tall. I didn’t realize that when I planted them in the front of the house; in the street sight line. I have been slowly trimming them back to grow toward the house, but still, seven to ten feet tall.

Try to see and eat a little red this June to celebrate all the things. And give yourself some healthy habits by eating more naturally red foods. Eat from your

garden, visit the local farmer’s market, or Sunny Creek Trading Post at City Central and try to eat seasonally. You might get burned-out on salads in May and June, but then you can eat all the peaches and pears when they are in season. There are upsides to eating seasonally. I promise. And you can always can and preserve your extra. And as always, Happy Gardening.

CHAMBER BUZZ

May 2024 saw the end of the Chamber’s programming for Leadership Ponca City Class 37 with graduation and the amazing project Class 37 orchestrated. However, it’s just the beginning; Class 37 graduates are primed and ready to continue redefining and growing as new leaders in our community!

The curriculum for Leadership Ponca City helps future leaders excel in their professional roles and make meaningful contributions to Ponca City. The participants not only learned strategies to help push them to become better leaders, but they also learned how they could make a difference in Ponca City. In addition to teambuilding, goal setting and leadership sessions, Class 37 learned about the history, nonprofits, industry, arts and culture, and education in the Ponca City area, as well as government at the local, county and state levels.

Part of the requirements of each Leadership Ponca City Class is to complete a philanthropic project that gives back to the community. Class 37 rose to the challenge and the idea for the Mr. Ponca City competition was the brainchild of the group. The class was laser-focused on thinking about a project from the time they collectively determined their core values and goals that were part of the curriculum activities. The class members were so inspired by the Civic and Human Resources session that they were passionate about planning a project to drive positive change for a local nonprofit.

Mr. Ponca City became the most intriguing new event in Ponca City with 10 contestants vying for the coveted title by representing a nonprofit of their choice. All proceeds from sponsorships and tickets went to the newly crowned Mr. Ponca City’s selected nonprofit. Each contestant had a donation box and rallied to raise funds for their nonprofit that went directly to their nonprofit and was part of the scoring for the overall crown. Each nonprofit represented received a donation, and the contestant raising the most funds in the donation box was named the “People’s Choice” winner. Class 37 raised over $10,000 in sponsorships alone and at the time this article was submitted, donation and ticket sales proceeds had

not been finalized. On May 9, Relo Adams was crowned Mr. Ponca City and all proceeds raised through sponsorships and ticket sales went to the nonprofit he was representing, Dearing House! The contestant raising the most donation funds, and the “People’s Choice” winner, was Bob Banta, and his donation funds went to the Opportunity Center!

Class 37 was chaired by three amazing community leaders and graduates of LPC – Brook Lindsay, Class 20; Natalie Fraser, Class 19; and Sean Grigsba, Class 33. These incredible chairs guided and imparted their dedication to service and wisdom to Class 37. Chairs serve a three-year term with Leadership Ponca City, and Brook Lindsay passed her hard-to-fill boots off to the new incoming chair, Molly Kyler. Molly is an LPC Class 16 graduate. With a keen eye for innovation and a passion for empowering others, Molly is poised to contribute to the program with her fresh perspective and dynamic approach!

As we celebrated Class 37 at their graduation ceremony on May 7, everyone anxiously awaited the announcement of the Larry Hughes Leadership Award recipient. Larry Hughes was a longtime community leader, who passed away in 1997. Larry Hughes was known as the go-to person for help with any project that needed to be completed with exemplary standards! Each year the winner must have been a past participant in Leadership Ponca City and is selected by previous Larry Hughes Award winners. Receiving the 2024 Larry Hughes

Leadership Award was Carey Head, LPC Class 3! Carey is a fierce advocate for those in need, and she goes above and beyond to serve in whatever capacity needed to improve our community. She is a strong advocate of Professionals Today, Marland’s Place, NERA, Dearing House, Survivors Resource Network, Hospice of North Central Oklahoma and the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce, to name only a few. One of Carey’s nominees said it best, “Carey supports Ponca City anyway she can because she wants to, not for the recognition, and if you were lucky enough to have known Larry Hughes, she is so much like him!”

Leadership Ponca City is a critically important initiative of the Chamber. LPC provides invaluable opportunities to learn from diverse perspectives, enhancing the class members’ leadership skills and understanding of our community to help build a pipeline of community leaders. Being actively involved in LPC demonstrates a commitment to social responsibility and builds trust among customers and stakeholders, positively impacting a business’ reputation and brand loyalty.

Ask any LPC graduate what the program means to them and you will gain great insight! Megan Sweeney of Class 37 noted, “Leadership Ponca City has been an amazing experience that’s changed my mind-set about Ponca City and as a leader.” Class 37 member Charles Rickman added, “In Leadership Ponca City, I‘ve seen how everyone plays a part in our community’s story, and giving back is our way of writing the next chapter together. It’s been eye-opening, showing me the value of networking and the fulfillment found in serving others.”

Nominate someone from your business or the community who would be a wonderful participant in Leadership Ponca City. Applications will be taken through June, and interviews for this prestigious group will begin in July. Nomination and application forms can be found on the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page, in our email Blast, or a link to the forms may be requested by calling the Chamber Office at 580765-4400 or a hard copy form may be picked up at 420 E. Grand.

If you are on the hunt for a fun, fastpaced, hilariously decadent, and witty “whodunit”, look no further than Apple+ and their brand-new show, Palm Royale! Set in Palm Beach in 1969, Palm Royale centers around washed-up beauty queen, Maxine Simmons, (perfectly played by Kristen Wiig) and her attempted rise from obscurity to the tip-top of elite Palm Beach society. As luck would have it, Maxine’s husband, Douglas, (played by none other than Josh Lucas) is the nephew, and only living relative of his ailing and comatose Aunt, Norma Dellacorte (Carol Burnett!), who is by all accounts one of the richest and most influential people in Palm Beach.

Believing that the time is near for Norma, and that Douglas was set to inherit the Dellacorte fortune, Maxine begins plotting, lying, and bluffing her way into the circles that she so fervently seeks affirmation and acceptance from.

Palm Royale boasts a star-studded cast: Kristen Wiig, Josh Lucas, Carol Burnett, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, Ricky Martin and many others, who use their exceptional talents to deliver humor, intrigue, emotion and fun into each and every scene. AUTUMN OF THE BIG SNOW

Lou Dean has been a local favorite for as long as I can remember. She was raised just across the river in Osage County in the 1950s. Dean grew up attending the Braden one-room schoolhouse, where even her dog was allowed to join in on the classroom learning! Since a small child, her life was centered around animals and her connection to them. Most of Dean’s books are based on her life, growing up with her amazing animals. Though she now resides in a secluded area of Colorado, her roots still run deep in Oklahoma and she will always make sure Brace Books & More has her latest book on the shelf.

Dean is well-known for her heart-touching memories. Though her newest book, Autumn of the Big Snow, takes a different approach as a work of fiction; it is still inspired not only by her Colorado surroundings, but also her real-life experiences around the area.

We join Katie, a Native American, as she is living her life in a small Colorado community. Having been in the construction business awhile now, Katie fit in well with the men she worked with.

Her one hard-and-fast rule was to never get involved emotionally with these rough around the edges, just trying to make a living, guys. Instead, Katie preferred a no strings attached kind of love life. That is until August Atkins showed up. As Katie finds herself struggling to not fall for the smooth-talking Texan, she begins to wonder what her life might be if she let herself. Will Katie’s mysterious past that she keeps hidden get in the way of her ever finding true love or will she finally give in and let August carry her away?

Over Sea, Under Stone

(The Dark Is Rising Sequence, bk. 1) by

I’ve wanted to read this series forever, but this is the first chance I’ve had. I knew nothing of the series, other than it was considered something of a classic in the children’s fantasy genre. So, you’ll understand I had no idea what to expect once I began the book.

The Drew family meets up with their GreatUncle Merry while on holiday (vacation) in Cornwall. Merry has rented a sea captain’s house for them while they stay in the village of Trewissick. While exploring the old house, siblings Simon, Jane and Barney discover an ancient manuscript in the attic. Great-Uncle Merry informs them it is actually a type of treasure map that will lead them to King Arthur’s Grail.

Great-Uncle Merry explains to the children that throughout time, the great forces of Light and Dark have battled for control of the world. The Grail is a mighty source of power to fight the forces of evil. After centuries of balance, the Dark is rising once more. If the Dark can gain control of the Grail, the Light will be unable to take advantage of its power.

The Drew children, along with their GreatUncle Merry, find themselves embroiled in a web of intrigue that surrounds the Arthurian legend. As the children embark on their search for the Grail, they encounter several folks who serve the Dark while pretending to be good, solid citizens. They are pitted against these sinister human beings repeatedly and must outwit them through bravery, wisdom and integrity. Throughout their endeavor, Simon, Jane and Barney find their lives in grave danger.

In some ways, Over Sea, Under Stone reminded me of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, in that it will become an amazing, epic adventure. I look forward to reading the rest of The Dark Is Rising Sequence.

G0d & Tiktok

One year ago exactly, my oldest daughter and I were strolling her baby sister around our block, just enjoying the nice weather and stretching our legs for a bit. It was a six-star weather day, as my favorite meteorologist Alan Crone would say, and we began to talk about just how lucky we were to experience such a nice day.

It had just rained the day before, and my daughter, being the product of her environment, kept commenting on that as well. I was getting tickled thinking about how she sounded just like a little 80-year-old man, who loves to

talk about the weather, when she looked up and said, “Mom, I’m so glad God sent a little bit of rain to us last night. It was like he looked down and remembered “Oh yeah, I should probably send some rain their way.” You know since he’s probably up there just watchin’ TikTok’s on his phone.”

So now before every thunderstorm, we know that God has hit the pause button on TikTok, sat his phone down, and finally remembered to send us some rain.

When my garage thermometer hits a rock-solid 80 degrees, I'm like Brendan Fraser in 'Encino Man' –thawing out and ready to rock! But brace yourselves, because chaos is about to unfold as I reintegrate into modern life after a winter spent practically hibernating in my own personal cave.

Step one post-hibernation: unleash the zero-gravity reclining lawn chairs!

Step two: whip up a tasty beveragino. Nothing says 'hello, summer' like a refreshing spritz. For white wine aficionados, the Bicicletta is a musttry and just the ticket for easing back into society with style.

Mixing this drink is as easy as riding a bike, which is precisely what inspired its name. The Bicicletta, or “bicycle” in Italian, is named after the wobbly drunk elderly gents pedaling home after a few too many afternoon drinks at the café. Now, that's what I call

entertainment!

Over in the U.S., speakeasy bars were dishing out moonshine concoctions with enough sugar to knock your socks off. But across the pond, the Bicicletta emerged as a bitter-forward beacon of Italian aperitif culture.

Made with Campari, dry Italian wine straight from the Veneto region and a splash of soda water, it's like the shade of a tall tree on a blazing summer afternoon.

So, take my advice (or don’t): grab a glass, opt for authentic Italian ingredients and ride your way to cocktail nirvana with the Bicicletta!

On a final note, amidst the joy of sipping and cycling, let’s pedal through this with a gentle reminder: always drink responsibly!

• 3 oz. Dry White Wine • 2 oz. Campari • Club Soda

Combine Campari and white wine (either Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc works beautifully) in a glass. Add ice, pour in club soda, stir gently and enjoy!
