Letter from the Editor Sights, Sounds and Smells

To Oklahoma farmers, June means one thing: harvest. Wheat harvest, to be specific. I grew up on a small farm just north of Lamont. Since I was old enough to “tag-along” with my father or grandfather, I participated in many wheat harvests over the years as their sidekick. I started out just riding in the combine. Some days I brought a pillow and a blanket, and I would crawl up on the small loft behind the driver’s seat, which was just barely big enough for a 4-year-old to curl up in. I would lay on my back and drift to sleep as the combine swayed, back and forth...each massive tire creeping one at a time over rows and ruts of dirt hardened by the Oklahoma sun. A combine is a beautiful orchestration of many sounds, all repeating in a sacred symphony; the “sick sick sick” of the sickle, the roar of the diesel engine, the swish of the wheat stalks as they enter the header, and the intermittent buzz of the hydraulics as the driver adjusts the header constantly. My favorite sound was the grain auger. After a big swath of wheat had been cut, and your bin was packed to the top with wheat seed, you would turn out of the uncut field, shut down the

non-vital machinery operations, and head towards the truck. When the auger had been strategically placed over the wheat truck, it was time to unload. I would pull the lever that extended the auger, and I would pull up the handle that released the wheat. After the handle was pulled, the auger would groan to life and began to “chunk chunk chunk” as the precious golden cargo was dumped. It swirled out of the end of the auger in a steady solid pulsing stream. With an empty bin, we’d head back to cut another section and repeat that until the field was done. “Auger Operator” was my first official job at the age of 4, and I took great pride in it. As a teenager and into my twenties, I became a combine driver myself for a summer job. My children, just as I did with my father, curled up in the same spot I had as a child. I am so thankful to have been able to share those special June memories and experiences with my children. I hope as you celebrate and make your own special memories this June, you will remember to slow down and take in all the sights, sounds, and smells all around you so that years from now, you can remember those wonderful memories in vivid detail.

Story and Images Contributed by Sara Bell, Tribal Administrator/Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma The Ponca Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma is preparing for the construction of a new tiny house village that they hope will help prevent, prepare and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Ponca Tribe began responding to the Coronavirus pandemic on January 22, 2020. Community members were worried about the effects of the virus and many started to prepare by purchasing hand sanitizer and a surplus of food, toilet paper and cleaning supplies. This put a strain on many tribal members’ budgets, and the Ponca Tribe Business Committee members started to receive requests for assistance. The Business Committee responded by giving over $34,000 in assistance for food, rent and utility payments in a four-month span. W

The village will offer five tiny homes to provide housing for tribal elders who are struggling with homelessness and displacement and are at a higher risk for COVID-19. Many tribal members live with other family members. They often move around from one house to another. This is a cultural practice and often not CLINIC DRIVE recognized as homelessness. The tiny homes will help reduce overcrowding, thus preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The Tiny House Village initiative is part of the federal government’s Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for Indian Community Development Block Grant (ICDBG) – CARES FY 2020 with a completion date of September 1, 2021. W

Each tiny house will be less than 900 square feet, complete with a kitchen, dining area, bedroom, living room, bathroom with special safety features such as grab bars and walk-in showers and an outside patio. The tiny house village will reside within a gated area, and village residents will have access to a walking trail complete with picnic areas. The tiny houses will host energysaving features and completely tiled flooring.

MOVIE Continued from page 11 depicted by Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie. Native American actor Lily Gladstone is portraying Mollie Burkhart, from whose perspective the story is being told. Just across the street from the church, dozens of 1920s cars, mostly Fords, but some Buicks and at least one Hudson, were parked haphazardly around an arbor. Scores of people in period costume gathered around for the scene. Robert DeNiro was spotted, along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and many, many Osages and other Native Americans with parts in the movie.

Money, vision, and lots of work – also known as movie magic – converted a bland former church on South Fourth into a replica of Fairfax’s Catholic Church in the 1920’s. Dirt was trucked in to duplicate our streets at the time. The Model T Ford is one of dozens that were part of the scenes filmed by Martin Scorsese and his dozens and dozens of workers.

magic – the place was converted from a Protestant Church to a Catholic Church. Newly clad in fragrant cedar planks, topped with crosses and “past-dated” with lancet windows, it will be featured in funeral scenes. The street in front of the church is now dirt instead of the brick it has been for almost a hundred years. Dirt trucks roared through town for many days recently, rattling windows as the trucks barreled through town.

It’s taking a lot of time, effort and money to make Pawhuska, north of the Mercantile, look as cool as Fairfax was in the 1920s.

To make sure every detail is perfect for the movie, 1920s cars drove up and down the street so even the tire tracks would be period correct!

A funeral scene was being filmed near the church Monday. After Anna Brown’s murder, her sister Mollie Burkhart arranged the funeral. Exorbitant prices were charged to the recently deceased woman’s estate – money that went to the businessmen who were supposedly looking out for Osages’ best interests. David Grann says the funeral cost would have amounted to $80,000 in 2017 dollars! Robert DeNiro is playing William Hale, the mastermind of the murders, who coldly agreed to be a pallbearer at Anna’s funeral. Hale was also the uncle of Mollie’s husband Ernest, who will be

Out of respect, pictures of the Gray Horse Cemetery where Anna and her mother and sisters were laid to rest will be at a replica of the site. Other filming has already taken place east of the Gray Horse village, where a still operated by some of the bad guys was replicated. No one told us if the still actually worked! Filming around Pawhuska has mostly been on ranches so far, as it’s taking a lot of time, effort and money to make Pawhuska north of the Mercantile look as cool as Fairfax was in the 1920s. False fronts on several crumbling buildings and some intact ones will give Pawhuska a true look of Fairfax in the booming 1920s – the Liberty Café has its sign up already, and other businesses from the era will soon follow.

More locations in Fairfax will have their moment of glory in June and July. The top floor of the bank on the corner of Elm and Main will be used as the offices of two doctors who had roles in the murders. And how’s this for authentic – the building actually housed those doctors during the time of the murders. A newspaper ad from 1917 says the Shoun brothers were officing in the rooms formerly occupied by Dr. Bagby. The doctors’ names, D.A. Shoun and J. G. Shoun, are now etched in gold on the bank’s upper windows. Another part of the top floor, currently used by the Masonic Lodge, has been refurbished and will represent the Masonic Lodge of the era. Other Fairfax houses will be used in the filming. One is a stand-in for the house that was blown up here – killing Mollie’s sister Rita and her maid. Rita Smith’s husband lingered painfully in the hospital for over a week, and then expired due to his injuries.

So with “lights, camera, action” actually happening right here, right now, Fairfax citizens are on high alert to spot stars AUTO/TRUCKING ACCIDENTS

So with “lights, camera, action” actually happening right here, right now,

These stunning 1920s cars lined South Fourth Street in Fairfax. They were brought in for scenes in front of the recreated Catholic Church and the arbor across the street.Drivers of the vehicles actually had to be schooled in how to start and drive the old cars.

Fairfax citizens are on high alert to spot stars on the streets for the next several weeks. But even with security staff working hard to make sure no one gets close to the filming sites; many locals are showing off their pictures of the stars. And even when you can’t spot a star, it is amazing to see the huge number of workers, vehicles, truckloads of equipment and countless hours of work that goes into making a blockbuster Martin Scorsese movie! Wanna see and hear that booming sound of the 1920s? Head over to Fairfax and Osage County to watch the filming of a $200 million plus movie being made right here, right now!

“ARREST WARRANTS” ISSUED FOR PONCA CITY RESIDENTS, INCLUDING SUZANNE BOETTCHER

JAIL ‘N BAIL AIMS TO HAVE FUN, RAISE AWARENESS AND MONEY FOR NORTHERN OKLAHOMA HUMANE SOCIETY PHOTOS AND STORY CONTRIBUTED BY SUZANNE BOETTCHER

N

o television, no internet, a hard bed and a forever lingering smell permeate my new habitat. Yes, I have been arrested. An accurate assessment of my arrest follows. I was minding my own business struggling with the difficult decision to walk or not walk against a light. At that very moment, out of nowhere, I was totally blindsided by Chief Bohon. Judging by the look on his face, from his perspective, he was seriously imagining I broke the law. Well, at that moment, he “read me my rights.” Unbelievable! Apparently, he irrationally thought I was responsible for a robbery at the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society. My anxiety and embar$ rassment were obvious, as he slapped the cuffs on me with a significant crowd of people looking on in front of the Chamber of Commerce Building. The controversy involved a diamond worth $5,000 that was stolen by an unknown thief sometime the previous night. He determined that I was a suspect, a consequence of my being in the vicinity of the building at the time of the robbery. I, of course, protested as he accompanied me to the Ponca City jail. I denied my guilt countless times to Chief Bohon, of course. He ignored me and handed me an orange suit …

I loathe that color. The judge recognized that I was a flight risk slapping a $1,000 bail on me. Now as uncomfortable as I am in here, this robbery has unleashed a flurry of arrests. Carey Head, Larry Murphy, Heather Cannon, Brenda Renfro, Jodi Cline, Stephanie Austin, Nancy Tyndall, Jeff Washko, Mike Eckholt, Jerrod Helling, RCB, Spike Henderson, Equity Bank and Liz Green are all here with me. Now, these are notable people, such as bank presidents, insurance agents and car dealers. Someone turned in Rod Alexander. It is estimated that by June 18 no one will be safe from arrest.

THE JUDGE RECOGNIZED THAT I WAS A FLIGHT RISK SLAPPING A 1,000 BAIL ON ME.

June 18, Osage Casino, 7 p.m. Chief Bohon will reveal the culprit who conspired to keep the diamond. Tickets to the unveiling admit 2 for $100 and can be purchased through any board member or by calling the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society, 580.767.8877. Appetizers, cash bar and a DJ will be available. As with all 501(c)(3) organizations, the NOKHS has experienced a challenge fundraising during the pandemic. It is time we celebrate. We hope your influence and enthusiasm for this event will produce the success we need to connect animals in need with people who care.

Pandemic Pivoting: Child Nutrition Staff Shines Despite Serving Challenges Story and Photos by Carey Head / Staff Writer

Preparing food for hungry diners is Chef Jeff Denton’s passion. By night he delights his guests as owner and Chef de Cuisine, T S Fork Restaurant. His day job is even more demanding as he and an army of specialists create cuisine to please the 4,500 students enrolled in Ponca City Public School system. On any given school day over this past turbulent year, Chef Jeff’s team prepared traditional meals for serving in school cafeterias as well as sacked lunches cooked, assembled and trucked to various sites for students attending school virtually. Planning a menu for the different types of delivery is challenging. Planning a budget with daily changes in meal numbers, service types and actual meals fed is a chaotic blend of trends, history and finger-crossing guesses. “It’s not a well-known fact that we are self-sufficient,” Jeff explains. “We are financially independent of the district.” Chef Jeff Denton is on his second tour of duty as head of PCPS Child Nutrition after being called back from retirement. He says Ponca City Public Schools doesn’t pay any expenses Hailey Eatherly creates each container salad and wrap with precision and care. The finished salads and wraps are available in several of the specialty food lines at Ponca City High School.

How to Grab Free Meals and Go By Carey Head / Staff Writer

The United States Department of Agriculture and Oklahoma State Department of Education are combining forces to provide free meals to all children through June 2022. This “Seamless Summer” nutrition program eliminates red tape requirements such as proofs of income, identity and status as a student. The result is a food fest for any child age 18 and under who, basically, has a pulse. These meals are offered to all children without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.

Children are offered free meals even if they are not students in Ponca City. In fact, children need not live in Ponca City nor be U.S. citizens to receive a free meal. To make this even simpler, families do not need to make a meal reservation such as calling Child Nutrition to request a meal. Even proof of identity isn’t needed. All the meal-taker needs to provide is the name of the child who will be eating the meal. According to Superintendent Shelley Arrott, “Anyone may collect a meal for a child. We only need the name of the child; no identification is necessary.” PONCA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS Ponca City Public Schools Child Nutrition Program is steering the local project for PCPS. Their free lunches

will be offered Monday through Friday from June 1 – 25. Pick-up times are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Lunch containers will be available for pickup at four sites: Union Elementary, Garfield Elementary and West Middle School as well as White Eagle Park. Separate containers with breakfast for the next day will be available, as well. Superintendent Arrott explains, “We have stationed the pick-up locations at various sites around town to ease the burden for transportation. Meals may be collected through drivethrough or walk-up service. Anyone can pick up a meal for a child, so we encourage parents to carpool or take turns collecting meals. If patrons know someone without transportation, we encourage them to volunteer to collect the meals.” She added, “Our transportation department will take meals to White Eagle each day via bus and meals will be available for collection at the park. Child Nutrition personnel will be available to disseminate meals at White Eagle Park.”

Italian, Hispanic and American cuisines are featured in turn at the “My Way Café” inside Po-Hi’s network of dining spots. Here, Munda Taylor prepares the build-your-own burrito and taco salad offerings for hungry students and staff to enjoy.

for Child Nutrition including supplies, equipment, utilities, and wages. Jeff says the staff was paid during the 2018 teachers’ strike and demonstrations at the State Capitol. During those 10 days, with PCPS being among the 200 districts forced to close was, according to Jeff, a big blow to Child Nutrition’s budget. “It really hit hard when we had the advocating at the State Capitol. That was our first exposure to downright losing money. We continued to pay our staff.”

Staff also has been paid all through the pandemic, regardless of whether Ponca City’s public schools were in session, virtually, actually or closed. Payment came out of Child Nutrition’s operating account. “All staff have contracts, just like teachers do, and we honor those contracts. It’s a priority to me that the staff gets paid. But it’s a burden on the program when your income goes to 25 percent.” He explains prior to 2020, 5,500-6,000 students were served breakfast and lunch, “so

No meals will be offered during the month of July and through the first weeks of August until the first day of school, Aug. 18. Instead, PCPS Child Nutrition will turn its attention to renovation, repair and staff training. FIRST LUTHERAN SCHOOL The First Lutheran School Cafeteria is the site where any one can enjoy a hot lunch. Those 18 and under will eat free. Adults will be charged $4. Senior Citizens and those with military ID will pay just $3.50. Lunch service is planned through June and July until August 12.

Continued from page 23 that means everybody was eating.” This year the number of meals served is down by nearly 25 percent. The State of Oklahoma sets a minimum price school districts must charge for meals. Reimbursement for these meals comes from the federal government with each school district reimbursed for student meals at the same rate. “Our reimbursement rate in Ponca City is the same as New York City,” he smiles. Food trends come and go (pizza and pocket sandwiches are, somewhat surprisingly, not as popular as before). And Jeff has found that a lot of students haven’t been exposed to different foods. “If the fast-food restaurant didn’t serve it, then (some students) didn’t recognize it.” “One little girl didn’t recognize a chicken bone,” he says. As the pandemic-related isolation wanes, Jeff and his staff can look back on the past semesters with the satisfaction that students were fed, whether on-site, in sacks or with food delivered by teachers to their students’ front doors. Pivoting from hot food line to service from sacks came with as little warning as an overnight phone call as a school or class was quarantined. “We aren’t out there to make money, but we’ve got to cover our costs. Bottom line, feeding kids is the most important thing we do.”

An exuberant group celebrates free lunches to be offered each weekday in June to anyone age 18 and younger. Joining them are Ninive Gomez, Hawk Whiteplume, Colton Taylor, Bailey Ryan, Tyson Dewberry, Autumn Pettit, Treyton Gober; and Child Nutrition’s Pamela Loy, Karen Luis and Linda Turner, CNP District Analyst. INVESTOR SPOTLIGHT Boettcher, Devinney, Ingle & Wicker

Each month we will be recognizing one of our long-time Investors. It was our pleasure speaking with attorneys Jim Devinney and Brad Wicker with Boettcher, Devinney, Ingle, Wicker. BDIW Law are trial lawyers who represent clients from Ponca City and across northern Oklahoma in a wide range of cases including personal injury, auto accident, workers’ compensation and Social Security Disability Insurance claims. These attorneys have a passion for helping people that comes naturally to them and when you add in an ever-present competitive nature and 65 years of combined legal experience handling injury claims, you have a team that knows nothing more than to go above and beyond for their clients. Jim, originally from Cashion, moved here in 1993 and quickly made Ponca City his home. At the beginning of his career, he was representing large corporations. He then moved on to defense cases. It wasn’t until he started practicing workers’ compensation law that he found his niche. Jim noted it was then that “ I finally felt like I was truly able to help people and really cared about what I was doing.” Brad began practicing law in 1997. After being a teacher and baseball coach in his hometown of Mangum, he decided to go back to school to study law. He soon realized law was his true passion. In 2018, Jim & Brad with Fred Boettcher and Derek Ingle formed Boettcher, Devinney, Ingle, & Wicker. As a firm, they care about their clients and genuinely want to help them get the justice they deserve. Brad expresses “I don’t L to R: Derek Ingle, Brad Wicker, Jim Devinney have a problem coming to work everyday. There is so much value in being able to get up every day and think ‘I get to go to work today’, I like being here and that’s nice. If you like people, you like your clients and it just puts your effort on a different level naturally. One of the biggest compliments our clients give us is that when they leave they feel like they are leaving their friends. They care about us and we care about them. We are all jointly suffering in this crazy world we live in and everyone deserves basic levels of decency and good treatment.” Their office is nestled in the heart of our downtown at 115 E. Grand Avenue. They have made significant improvements to their historic property over the years truly adding to the beautification of our downtown. BDIW has been a long-time Investor in Ponca City Main Street and hosts the photo booth each year at our Goblins on Grand Halloween carnival! We want to extend a big thank you to Boettcher, Devinney, Ingle and Wicker for supporting our program for so many years. We are so grateful to have their firm downtown!

A few words that come to mind when thinking about Summer would be: pleasant, honest, and warm. The kind of person you instantly feel lucky to know. As we discussed in our side conversations while doing this piece, a lot of my own art comes from a negative, angry place. I thought it was interesting, refreshing, yet fitting, that she alluded to simply brushing away all things negative. Just keep it moving, do things that make you happy and if you’re Summer (we’re all very much not,) beautiful art will be the result. Hopefully you guys enjoy her work as much as I do. Yours, Bradley

B: I think this is the first thing I asked you when we met, but for the readers- what is the correct definition of what you do? S: I do fiber art! “Fibre” if you want to sound

fancy. I make woven wall hangings and other fun, happy, decorative items. I’ve recently started falling down the macrame rabbit hole as well. I believe that everywhere you look, you should see something that triggers happiness. B: How would one go about purchasing your stuff? S: Cryptocurrency! Just kidding. You can follow me on Instagram @Stu.dio1979. I post all of my art there and if anyone sees anything they like they can just DM me! I have some super exciting things in the works right now. I’m involved in a vibrational cooperative art community in Placervile, Colorado. We are building a retail website and have our first art exhibiton in June! The most exciting thing right now is my involvement with the Tonkawa Development Authority.

Quit killing black people. Is that too much to ask? Racism breaks my heart and this last year has been horrific. Stop the Asian hate too!!!

Everything I create has positive intentions woven into each piece, that’s what I want to share. I do love life! I haven’t always had this obnoxiously sunny disposition. It took some work. You have to be happy with yourself first. You have to surround yourself with people who have what you want in life, and, in turn, you have to reach out and give back.

B: I agree wholly. You seem to have a good outlook on life- what’s the secret? Also how does positivity and/or negativity affect your work?

Thank You!

On May 1st, there were a lot of events going on in and around Ponca City. There was a Derby Party, St. Mary’s golf tournament and a whole lot of out-of-town events. Somehow our Ponca City community still showed up for a benefit event to raise funds for the Aguilar family and their continued expenses. The businesses and individuals listed #JuJuStrong below donated to make this event a huge success. Thank you so much! I can’t even tell you how much it means to the family. Liles And Company Celebrates 10 Years Downtown Story by Kelsey Wagner/Editor-in-Chief Photos provided by Trina Liles-Sims

Trina Liles-Sims is an educator by trade and worked both as a teacher and eventually as a high school principal. But in December 2010, she became a boutique owner as well. On December 1, 2010, Trina Liles-Sims purchased “The Bag Lady” boutique, a small store specializing in handbags. The small store was initially located next to Turtle’s Donut shop on north Seventh St. The story behind the purchase of the business is as simple and sweet as Trina’s laugh as she recalls the spur-of-the-moment purchase.

The beautiful Liles and Company storefront, located on Grand Ave. near Second St. in downtown Ponca City.

“We were just on a month-to-month lease, and Terron started looking and talked to Fred Boettcher, and in six months, we moved downtown. We just decided it would be better and more convenient for shoppers, so going to Grand Ave. was our ultimate goal.” By moving down to Grand Ave, the store tripled in size and expanded its offerings by adding clothing lines, denim, menswear, and home goods.

“I don’t know! I went over there to play Bunko with Kylie Hughes, who owned The Bag Lady, and her mom and I were high school friends. They told me that night the store was for sale, and my daughter Traci said I should buy it,” recalls Trina, “so it was on a whim that we even bought it.”

It wasn’t long until Trina’s daughter, Traci Irragi, a certified cosmetologist, joined the family business as well. During the rebranding, Liles and Company added four salon chairs in the back of

I said, “What’s a high school principal going to do with that business?”

“We wanted to make it a family business we could be proud of.”

Trina did buy the business and soon asked her son Terron to join the business. Terron has a keen eye for fashion and helped shoppers find styles that matched their taste and preference.

The salon now has six total stylists in addition to the original four and has expanded to include spa services like pedicures, manicures, and facials. Bea Rowe, Mary Beth Belot, and Ashley Pugh have all joined the Liles and Company stylist team and are available to meet your beauty needs. Ten years and one store rebranding later, Liles and Company is now an anchor retail store, located on East Grand near Second St. Trina says that their customers have become more like friends over the past ten years, and she credits that to Liles and Co’s dedication to quality products and customer service.

been able to stay alive,” says Trina.

Terron also took a job with the Ponca City Art Association in February 2020, so Traci stepped in to fill the gap that Terron left. Liles and Company regularly has Facebook lives sales and in-store events, and to celebrate their 2011 anniversary downtown, all shoppers in June will get 20.11% off all their total boutique purchases. Liles and Company will have other giveaways, sales, and special events in conjunction with their anniversary celebration. To find out more about their upcoming events and sales, follow them at Facebook.com/lilesandcompany.

“We guarantee our products. If you’ve got a problem, you bring it in, and we’ll take care of it,” says Traci.

During their rebranding, Liles and Company expanded to include a full-service salon in addition to their clothing boutique.

“We wanted to make it a family business we could be proud of,” Trina says. 2020 was challenging for Liles and Company. The pandemic forced many small shops to close, but Liles and Company adapted to survive, and between curbside and online sales, they were able to weather the storm. “That website kept us alive between March and August 2020. Arts Adventure began in 1991 in Ponca City and was held on the grounds of the Marland Mansion until 2000, when it was moved to Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa.

Arts Adventure Camp is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded by grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as donations from local businesses and individuals.

Arts Adventure is a summer camp for students going into sixth grade, up through and including those who have just completed 12th grade. Arts Adventure was cancelled last year due to COVID-19, but this year it will be a three-day camp (July 20-22) and will still be held on the campus of NOC. Students will be able to choose two or three classes (some take more time than others). The camp starts at 12:30 p.m. and ends at 5:30 p.m. Arts Adventure concludes with a performance/display showcase on the last day of camp, but this year there will be a virtual showcase, with the possibility of an outdoor option. Class sizes will be limited to 10 campers or fewer. Jewelry and Ornament making

i k a y Teriyaki i Ter Weeknight Dinner Party

Recipe & Photo by Paul Muehlberg/Contributing Writer This dish is one of my favorites to serve for a weeknight dinner party. It’s quick, easy and super delicious. Prep Time: 10 min / Cook Time: 12-15 min / Serves: 4-6

Ingredients 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon Kosher salt ¼ cup canola oil ½ cup mirin ½ cup sake 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 2 tablespoons sugar ¼ cup soy sauce 2-3 green onions, sliced 1 teaspoon sesame seeds

Directions Place chicken in a Ziploc bag. Season with the salt and add the flour to the bag. Shake the chicken in the bag to evenly coat the chicken. In a small mixing bowl, add the mirin, sake, sherry vinegar, sugar and the soy sauce; stir until the sugar is dissolved. In a large skillet over high heat, add the oil. When the oil starts to smoke, add the chicken. Brown chicken on both sides, working in batches as to not overcrowd the pan. Place chicken on a paperlined plate. Drain about ½ of the oil from the pan, leaving any browned bits in the pan. Return the chicken to the pan over medium heat and add the sauce mixture. Scrape up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Cover and continue to cook until the sauce is thickened and the chicken is cooked through, about 10-15 minutes. Serve chicken over a bed of warmed, steamed rice, such as jasmine. Sprinkle with the sesame seeds and garnish with the green onions. Enjoy!

Music In & Around Ponca City

Sounding Off Story & Photos by Steve Scott/Contributing Writer Your relentless journalist is gathering thoughts and information for this month’s column while enjoying lunch at the Lakeside Grill, located close to the Lake Ponca Recreation Area. Even when dining out, I often crave the simple goodness of down-home cooking, and this restaurant delivers in spades. I also crave the down-home, heartwarming experience of live music, and there are strong indications the sun is rising, acts are being booked and we are seeing the Ponca City entertainment scene’s revival.

The Bandstand Wow! For the month of April and May, our local entertainers were steadily booked, ensuring everyone could enjoy their talents somewhere every weekend. After canvassing the venues, here’s what is already lined up for June: The Liverpool Legends will be in concert on June 4 in the parking lot behind PC Provisions in downtown Ponca City. This is a big production show that you do not want to miss! In addition to the annual Herb Festival on June 5, the Ponca City Arts and Humanities Council is sponsoring a concert featuring Mark Galloway and Jerry Wilson in the amphitheater at City Central. Be there from 6-9 p.m. to enjoy the music. The North Central Oklahoma Arts Council “Full Moon Concert Series” will have the always popular Hillcrest Ensemble performing under the gazebo in Tonkawa on Thursday, June 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Oklahoma City and on June 17 at the Enid Moose Lodge. The always trendy Astoria Wine Bar in downtown Ponca City is hosting Greg Demyon on June 18 and Austin DuPlantis on June 25. Are you ready for some Rock ‘n’ Roll? Dirty Erin has several dates on the books, including July 10 at the Elks Ballroom in Stillwater. Ridin’ High, continuing their dominance as the dance club in northern Oklahoma, has Mas Tequila scheduled in July. Watch their Facebook page for band announcements as they happen.

Something Happening … Down by Downtown! is a new event, scheduled to occur on the final Friday of each month, June thru September. The entertainment will be from 6-9 p.m. A known artist will be featured as an opening act, and then the stage will transition to “open mic night.” For those who are interested in performing live for the public, this will be a chance to grab your guitar and hit the stage on the west side of City Central. Food vendors will be across from the stage in Central Fare along with a drink caterer. Please set aside Friday, June 25 for the first event in this new “Downtown Entertainment” series.

Local Stars … I am taking a little “journalistic privilege” this month by featuring the group I play with, the Hayes Brothers Band. Members of this seven-piece powerhouse include Clark Hayes on guitar, Kent Hayes on drums, Stan Villines on bass, Keke Johnson on guitar and Hammond organ, Eddie Holick on guitar and fiddle, Steve Scott on synthesizer/ keyboards and Jace Sober on guitar. The band is known for playing music from the 1950s thru today, including pop, rock and country tunes that everyone knows and usually sings along. Most of the members are literally local legends, having played in various groups for over 50 years. However, there is a common theme: six of the members played in the infamous Good Ol’ Boys band during the 20 years it was together. They traveled the central United States playing the larger clubs and dance halls, and at one point won the annual Marlboro Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. On a personal note, I can remember being asked to play with the band in 1993. The Good Ol’ Boys were regionally famous with incredible, top-of-the-line musicians who set a “high bar” in musicianship. Even with my decades of professional band experience, the opportunity to play with these “idols of mine” was enough to have me doubting my capabilities. Needless to say, the first rehearsal was nerve-racking, but I distinctly remember the moment Kent said, “Why are you sweating – you’ve got the job!” Over time I’ve had the great fortune to meet, work, play music and become friends with some of the most amazing people and entertainers, but joining the Good Ol’ Boys, and the band’s current iteration (the Hayes Brothers Band), literally changed my life forever. All of us still love entertaining the public, and with bookings starting to fill the band’s calendar from summer thru Oktoberfest, it sure feels good to be working again. If anyone has information on live music events, please write me at smscott54@hotmail.com.

At the risk of sounding rah-rah, the growth of dynamite duo Backroads in the northern Oklahoma music scene is something to applaud. They will be at Zanotti’s in Stillwater on June 19. Holly the Jazz Singer is once again performing at TS Fork in Tonkawa every Friday and Saturday night, and the full band, Holly and the Guys will be performing outdoors at the TS Fork Block Party on June 26. You can enjoy guitar and vocal virtuoso Larry Newsom on June 4 at Back 2 Sighs, June 22 at the grand opening of Skydance Brewery in

Are Summer Classes Worth It? Summertime Can Help You Stand Out

Story by Adam Leaming, CEO/University Center/ Contributing Writer

T

his month is a time to celebrate and say goodbye to our graduating students. It’s time for parents to weep when their toddler completes daycare and moves to school in the Fall. Or we weep again at watching our teenager complete high school and symbolically wrap up their childhood. We watch our friends and loved ones graduate with a degree and witness the joy on their faces as they had overcome a number of obstacles to earn that diploma. It’s time to celebrate the culmination of efforts of the many and the sacrifices made by themselves and their support systems to reach this point. Finally, it is a time to welcome the summer and celebrate the end for many students. There’s many students graduating in our community and area that makes May a tremendous season of hope, joy, and a celebration of a brighter future. This month I’m celebrating each of our graduates but one in particular stands out to me. A woman, who decided to attend the UC to turn her life around from her past life path that was full of destruction and negativity, will be graduating with a graduate degree in Counseling/Psychology this May. I learned quickly about her story when I first started working here that she decided to stop the path that she was on and instead of giving her life up to drugs, crime, and poverty she was choosing to go back and study to help others get out of their own addiction and developing coping mechanisms to deal with life and to secure a better future for herself and

family. She quickly excelled and stood out as she voraciously attacked her coursework and soon found herself accumulating the hours she needed for a degree.

Her higher education path was not full of rainbows and sunshine, she ran into employment issues as she tried to clear background checks. Opportunity after opportunity was closed to her as her background precluded her from gainful employment. Her hope and heart faltered a few times as opportunities seemed to pass her by and she wondered if her past would even allow her a chance at a future. But as time continued, she never gave up, she soon graduated with her bachelor’s degree. She was undeterred and was committed to more, as she knew a graduate degree would open even more opportunities. Today, after countless hurdles, roadblocks and challenges, she’s walking this month with her master’s degree. I am happy to report she has found full time employment in Ponca City as she aids those who find themselves in a familiar setting she once did several years ago. This is one reason why I celebrate graduation. Stories like these happen each semester at the University Center. We’re thankful for the opportunity to help students earn a degree and become gainfully employed. I hope you can take a moment to reach out and celebrate a recent graduate in our community!

Humor & Entertainment

I

know that all you men out there who read my article last month took my advice and showered your wives and mothers with love and affection and gifts and attention on Mother’s Day, so it’s only fair that we return that love on Father’s Day (June 20, ladies).

adorable and cheesy. Seriously though, we appreciate you dads that are out there working all day, going straight from work to baseball practice where you have to coach a bunch of crazy little kids running around like wild animals. We appreciate that after working all day you come home and wrestle with the kids, play Barbies or Legos, read bedtime stories and then do the dishes after dinner. And we appreciate the papas, peepaws and grandpas that raised their sons to be great dads. Alright now that we’ve got that mushy stuff out of the way … I’m not a dad, so

So, fellas, we want you to sleep in, turn on some sports, play golf, sit back and relax while your wives make you a delicious meal, crack open a few cold ones and enjoy your special day. You might be thinking, “Well that just sounds like a regular old Saturday,” and in my household anyway, you’d be right, except on Father’s Day, you’ll get to do all those things, but you’ll also get a gift. Socks? Underwear? A new wallet? A tool that cuts something or puts holes in something?

I reached out to a few dads in my life to ask for their best gift ideas, and here’s what they said: Golf clubs/accessories, their favorite dinner, socks and … um … let’s just say, “love coupons.” And since this is a family magazine, we’ll just let you use your imagination on that one. Easy enough, right ladies? Happy Father’s Day, fellas!

Along with a homemade card with a hammer drawn on it that says, “When it comes to being a great dad, you NAILED it” or something equally

The Amazing Capabilities Of The Core

Story by Kera Kester, NASM Certified Personal Trainer/Contributing Writer

Your abs are not just one big muscle block in the center of your body.

Your body is amazing! You may have some contrary thoughts at times, but I need you to know the truth in my statement. Put aside your perceptions on your level of physical attractiveness for a moment and think on this. You function in that body daily. It allows you to move, to engage life as well as others and it does a great job of protecting you. Furthermore, what is especially worth appreciating? The amazing capabilities of the core! “But Kera, have you seen my core?” Stop right there. It is amazing! There is so much more to it than how flat it can look or how well it can resemble a “pack of coke cans,” as Lauren Mazzo would say. I will tell you why! When I think of “strong core,” I think of Sharon Stone. Total Recall anybody? That movie is one of my favorites! Of course, one would assume that this is due to her great shape and drive as a gym rat. However, my take on putting those two together is even more of an inspirational cause. In the 1990s, Stone was in a car accident driving along Sunset Boulevard. A car was driving on the wrong side of the road and hit her head on. She dislocated her jaw, sprained her back, twisted her knee and broke one of her ribs. This is where it gets good. It is said that the doctor’s statement to her was this – “Had you not developed a strong core, I don’t see how you would ever be able to walk again.” Due to her discipline and wisdom in

50 June 2021

strengthening her core and back, she was put in a back brace and bedridden for six months before walking again! This story speaks so much truth about the importance of your core. Some out there consider it your most important muscle group. This is your central support system for everything you do. It helps you balance, lift, bend over, maintain good posture and all of the other mechanics you need in order to function daily. It assumes a dominant role for movement in every plane of motion – frontal (left and right), transverse (rotational) and sagittal (forward and backward). Every other part of your body, like your hips, shoulders, back and knees, is protected by the support it gives. It is even involved while you sleep, aiding in your breathing or turning from one side to the other. Now that we’ve established its dominance and necessity, let me break it down for you a little more! Your abs are not just one big muscle block in the center of your body. There are layers to your core’s abdominal muscles. The transverse abdominis is the deepest and stabilizes your spine and pelvis. Next, you have two oblique muscles that allow bending, rotation and other spinal and back movements. The rectus abdominis is the top layer and is the desired six-pack muscle. You use the rectus abdominis in movements like a crunch or hollow hold. These are not even all of the muscles involved in your whole core! We haven’t even touched on your back muscles, diaphragm and pelvic floor muscles – all of which help you stay straight during a plank, for example. Isn’t the body so complex and interesting? Whenever my clients ask me where to begin, I always tell them “definitely make strengthening your core a top priority.” It is crucial and a great starting point for strengthening every other muscle in your body. Start with body weight before adding dumbbells or kettlebells. How you use and progress your muscles are just as important as using them at all. Start with exercises like planks or squats then progress to farmer’s carries or weighted leg raises. I want to see you live strong and injury-free so be patient with yourself! Never be ashamed of where you start. Greatness takes development and time! I am so proud of you for any decision you have made to begin or progress your fitness lifestyle! Keep it up and remember “a strong core, allows for so much more!” Bless you all!

Hardworking Plants for Father’s Day Pretty and Practical Plants That Serve a Purpose Story & Photos by Kat Long/Contributing Writer Welcome to June!

– the very best month for lawn care, gardeners and outdoorsy-type people who live in Oklahoma, in my opinion. Yes, it is hot. No, rain is not guaranteed. But nights are gorgeous, it is easy to treat your dad on Father’s Day and your yard partner (whoever mows and edges and hoists and totes) isn’t too gripey about doing all the things. Herb Festivals are everywhere and probably as you are reading this, Ponca City is getting ready for our Herb Festival at LA Cann. So let’s start there. Working Plants for Your Lawn If you want some hardworking plants that are pretty in your yard, here are some great additions to the yard, even in June. But don’t just take my word for it. Talk to the plant vendors at any herb festival or farmer’s market. They know stuff. Lemongrass. If you can find lemongrass, buy two or three pots. They get huge, so give them some room to grow. My plants last year were four feet tall and almost that wide. Lemongrass is an annual here in Ponca City, unless you put it in pots and bring them inside over winter. Then you can just cut it down and it will regrow. It assists with keeping the mosquitoes away; you can cook with it; it is beautiful and smells wonderful. Marigolds. These hard little workers are great in the garden or as a border flower when landscaping. They repel nematodes in the soil and help your peppers, tomatoes, beans and okra produce more throughout the growing season. Marigold flowers and leaves are edible and make a nice addition to salads, on top of pastas or as a pretty on the steak plate. Though marigolds are an annual, they reseed quite

52 June 2021

Lemongrass is a tropical herb packed with strong citrus flavor. The lemon taste is prized in Asian cooking, as well as in teas, sauces, and soups. In the garden, lemongrass forms a tall, grassy clump 3 to 5 feet tall. Lemongrass essential oil is used in aromatherapy to freshen the air, reduce stress, and uplift the mood.

nicely, so invest in a few flats this year and leave a few dried seed heads at the end of the season or crush them into the soil when you do your fall clean-up. I do love a self-seeding flower. Basil is the best companion plant for your tomatoes. It repels those pesky hornworms and helps keep moisture in the ground during our Oklahoma summers. Basil also keeps the Japanese beetles and cabbage worms at bay, when seeded or planted around fruit and leafy greens. And of course, there are the pizza and pasta reasons. Mmmmm, pasta. Are you noticing a theme? All three of these plants/flowers are fantastic in pasta. And who doesn’t love pasta in the summer? Chives. Yes, I said chives. For all you rose people out there, chives are a great companion to prevent Japanese beetle infestations and will repel black spots. The white and purple flowers are a nice addition when landscaping and will draw in all kinds of pollinators. And then there is the culinary side of chives – tuna fish sandwiches, salads and, of course, pasta. Well, now I’m hungry.

Besides the fact that all parts of the clover are edible, it grows really well in our area. Let’s chat about clover. I know all of you people with lawns like your grasses: fescue, zoysia, Kentucky and so on. But might I suggest clover as a grass alternative. Hear me out. Besides the fact that all parts of the clover are edible, it grows really well in our area. Heck, clover grows well in Oklahoma. Most common, of course, is the white clover which everyone has a patch of in their yard and most of us have made clover chains from the flowers. Less common is pink and red clovers. Last year I had some amazing red clover in my wildflower patch, but this year I went crazy with giant pink clover. I seeded the front yard before every rain and though there was some run off, there are currently some nice clumps of giant clover which started blooming last week (early May).

great thing about clover is you don’t have to mow it every week, even if it rains a lot. The white clover is very short and a nice ground cover. Give it a try if you have a spot in your yard where grass just isn’t growing or where you would like to put in easy-care wildflowers to attract some pollinators. Clover is a great start to get it ready for a wildflower bed. Father’s Day If your dad is a gardener, there are some great gifts out there for Father’s Day. But one of the best gifts, at least in my estimation, is hanging out with your parental unit for a few hours and doing the thing(s) they like to do. If that is gardening, great. If it is cleaning out the garage, you can do that for dad. Maybe it is cleaning up his tools or helping with a project he hasn’t been able to finish. Don’t ask, just pitch in. Dads are like that. And there is always Herb Festival Weekend June 3-5, with outdoor movies, Cruisin’ Grand, outdoor theatre, concerts and art. I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one with the cart, a list and lots of plants. Happy Gardening!

Yes, it is big and clumpy but the flowers are beautiful and the bees love a good clover patch. The

Admiral William H. McRaven is the bestselling author of Make Your Bed and Sea Stories. I thoroughly enjoyed both of those books, so I was excited to discover he had published another book, The Hero Code. 1977 was a major year in William McRaven’s life; he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and joined the Navy SEAL(s). For the next 37 years, he traveled the world as he served his country. During his career, McRaven viewed and experienced the worst that we humans can inflict on others: war, cruelty, indifference and more. Over those same years, McRaven also had the

According to Admiral McRaven, the Hero Code is comprised of 10 virtues: courage, humility, sacrifice, integrity, compassion, perseverance, duty, hope, humor and forgiveness. In The Hero Code, he shares the stories of everyday heroes whose lives exemplify these virtues. You might think that you can’t ever be heroic like the folks in this book, but McRaven assures us that we can build those character traits in our own lives to the point where those virtues become the infrastructure of our character. Each of us can be a hero. As a matter of fact, heroes are everywhere. Let’s make our world better.

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW

Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Valor by Ally Carter

Recommended age: 8 to 12 years

• April has been in the foster system since she was three years old, when her mother left her at a fire station with a fancy key and a note that said she’d be back soon. • Violet is a very talented young artist who’s also in the foster system. She hasn’t spoken in a very long time. • Tim, Violet’s protector and self-appointed big brother, is in the foster system because his father is a criminal and there’s nowhere else for him. • Sadie is an orphan, inventor, genius and a good friend.

• Ms. Isabella Nelson is the Director of the Winterborne Foundation and the childhood friend of Gabriel Winterborne. • Smithers is the butler of Winterborne House. He reminds me of Alfred (the Wayne family butler in Batman). • Evert Winterborne is Gabriel’s uncle, who stands to inherit everything when he has Gabriel declared dead in the next few days. The five children end up at Winterborne House, with its “42 bedrooms, 16 staircases, three dining rooms, and 39 bathrooms,” which is now a home and school run by Ms. Nelson and Smithers. Winterborne House has the Winterborne crest on display throughout the house; Violet and April discover that the emblem on April’s key is the Winterborne crest! That’s just one of the mysteries the kids must unravel.

THE HUB “Bringing the City to the Country” Story by Lauren Payne/Staff Writer

“Hub.” noun 1. the central part of a wheel 2. the effective center of an activity, region, or network

The Hub’s arcade has the top 30 most popular games, photo by Lauren Payne.

The idea behind the name, The Hub, which will soon become the most popular hot spot in not just Kay County but North Central Oklahoma, came from the root of the project itself - linking the community together. “The idea is we want our spot to be the link, the glue that holds the surrounding communities, families, and businesses together,” Phillip Glass, CEO of Tonkawa Enterprises, said. “If we can take one thing away from the pandemic, it’s that we all need each other. We need community to thrive and everything else will fall into place, that’s what The Hub is all about.” Russ Martin, Chief of the Tonkawa Tribe and 20-year educator and coach was the one

56 June 2021

to pitch the idea to the Tonkawa Tribe in 2019. The customers were beginning to be overwhelming at the bar and restaurant on the weekends and between frustrated staff and guests, the idea took root. “First and foremost, we wanted to have another restaurant and bar that would accommodate our guests,” Martin said. “We try to do everything based on what our guests want. Then, we saw an opportunity and a need for our guests and our tribal members wanting something to do. There’s just not a lot to do around here. You had to go to Stillwater or Edmond for a good environment. So, why not us?” Martin presented the idea to the Tonkawa Tribe, and they were 100 percent on board. “For me to do anything, there’s three of us on the business committee, Pat Waldrup, and Rachel Starr. We all need to agree then we take that to the tribal members and present them our ideas and that’s exactly

what we did. One hundred percent, they said go for it, do it! I just represent them and fortunately, we all share the same vision. So, I’m just very fortunate to have people like that I’m working with and that I represent. It’s such a blessing for me and my family as well.” The Hub, at Tonkawa Casino recently held its soft openings May 5-8 followed by its grand opening, May 10. The soft openings “opened” the entire place up for free, (except the bar) on four nights designated for family, the Tonkawa Tribe, business influencers and the Tonkawa Enterprise

“WE WANT OUR SPOT TO BE THE LINK, THE GLUE THAT HOLDS THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES, FAMILIES, AND BUSINESSES TOGETHER.” staff that worked through the openings. The staff at Ponca City Monthly and My Media Matters were invited to the business influencers night and had a chance to experience everything firsthand. “The soft openings have been wonderful. Pretty much the same reaction, their eyes get big, they just tell me WOW, it doesn’t look that big?” Martin said. “They come in here and are just overwhelmed with everything we have going on, all the technology- some stuff no one else in Oklahoma has.” The Hub features 35,000 square feet of entertainment, state of the art technology, 12 bowling lanes, twin movie theaters with food and drink service and reclining chairs, a coffee shop, an arcade with a VR room and an E-Sports lounge, a large sports bar with a food truck parked right in the forefront, plus party rooms for birthdays and corporate events. Besides housing entertainment for the masses, The Hub boasts exclusive features that can’t be found anywhere in Oklahoma. They have the longest bar in Oklahoma that houses multiple 86-inch TVs, a bottom-up system with branding opportunities for your business or party. Their Virtual Reality (VR) omni arena has a top 20 game library that sends the experience to your email. The bowling SPARK package is not only exclusive to Oklahoma but also one of three in the US and they’re the only casino in Oklahoma to feature an E-Sports lounge for E-Gaming.

HUB Continued from page 57 What could possibly be the most unique and brilliant caveat to The Hub’s spotlight can be accredited to Russ Martin and his 20 years as an educator and coach. The “Earn and Learn Program,” was started for high school juniors, seniors, and those enrolled in a college or trade school. If students work for The Hub part-time, in addition to their hourly wages, The Hub contributes $2 for every hour worked toward an accredited college or trade school. “We have young people working here and for me, personally, that’s a treat,” Martin said. “I enjoy trying to motivate young people and to

have them apply and be a part of this- it’s wonderful. “The other side of that, if you can imagine, trying to open seven businesses and all the details that go into that,” Martin continued. “Phillip Glass and his staff have done a wonderful job. I was expecting at least 10-20 major problems and we haven’t had that. Most importantly, nobody has complained, everyone is just ‘oohing and aahing’ and the tribal members were very pleased.” Ponca City Monthly also sat down with, Kevin Harris, The Hub Operations Manager and Tonkawa Enterprises Surveillance

and I’ve never seen anything like this all in one place,” Harris continued.

“Well, originally, looking on the outside I thought there’s no way they’re going to get 12 bowling alleys in here, two movie theaters, and the arcade,” Harris commented. “But, once you get inside and realize how big it is, it’s just been great watching everything come together piece by piece.

“I always tell people, ‘We are bringing the city to the country.’ So, to me, this is a small community, but we have a huge chance for a lot of people to do a lot of things. With the pandemic this is a nice way, I think, to come out of it. I’ve heard that from a lot of customers, too.”

“It’s amazing because I know you can go to Wichita to get some of the stuff, maybe Tulsa, maybe Stillwater, maybe even Dallas. But I’ve been to a lot of large cities,

T e h Danny’s BBQ t of TASTE own Head Quarters Head Over to the Head Quarters Story & Photos by Nancy Laffey/Contributing Writer If you were to ask the Internet where the BBQ capital of the world is, it will tell you it’s Kansas City. But I must respectfully disagree. Due to my own personal bias, I know that in my heart Ponca City and Kay County will always be the BBQ Head Quarters of the world. That’s why during National BBQ Month, I made the short trip to our local BBQ capital: Danny’s BBQ Head Quarters. The restaurant has had a name change and a nice remodel, but you can still find that same nostalgic ambiance, coupled with the friendliest and most hardworking championship BBQ’ers behind the counter ready to serve. I can never decide on just one of the meat selections, but thanks to my dinner date, we were able to sample all of them! Danny’s BBQ Head Quarters has a semi cafeteriastyle layout. When you approach the counter, a large menu on the wall lists all the combinations and meaty selections your carnivorous heart could desire. We ordered a combination that allowed us to sample ribs, ham, hot links, chicken breast and brisket. The kind man behind the counter meticulously cuts your meat choices with his skillful knife moving effortlessly like a hot knife through butter. Each portion is weighed, tenderly adjusted and placed on your plate. I respect that kind of order and regularity; that kind of attention to detail must go into the seasoning and smoking of each dish. I like that the hot links are split down the middle

lengthwise and how the whole chicken breast is sliced right in front of you. Everything was cooked right, but the best meat that evening was the chicken. I’m not normally a chicken eater. I go for more interesting meats and flavors. Chicken breasts can easily be overcooked and dry, so I usually don’t order them at restaurants. I knew, however, that I could trust Danny’s staff to cook chicken right. This chicken breast was so very tender and smoky. I was a little sad that we weren’t there on a Thursday to order the half chicken on the bone. If you have not been to Danny’s on a Thursday, you need to mark your calendar and get there next week for this special! The main show is the BBQ and all the different meats. They are the reason to show up; however, I am all about the sides too. The new-to-me side I tried this time was the fried okra, and I have to say all these years I have been missing out. They were perfectly crispy and deep-fried to perfection! My go-to, must-have side at Danny’s are the hot and fresh French fries. They have a great crispy texture and flavored with the perfect seasoning. I must assume that they are seasoned with Head Country Original Championship™ Seasoning. To my delight, you can buy bottles of this amazing stuff right inside the restaurant, along with the Head Country™ BBQ sauces and marinade. Just like the bottle of seasoning says, “apply liberally and win the day.” I love how you can pick up all the favorite Head Country products at Danny’s BBQ Head Quarters. I love the marinade and all the Head Country sauces. In my mind there isn’t a reason to ever buy anything else. If you are new to Ponca City, traveling through or have been here since 1986 or earlier, you know you can satisfy your craving for excellent BBQ right here by going straight to Danny’s BBQ Head Quarters!

NEO BADGE & SLANT LOGOS

TY

AIL

CENSING

The “NEO Badge” logo was created in 2012 as the primary identity of NEO A&M College. Rather than a primary wordmark, the NEO badge is an all-encompassing logo that is not only meant to be a stylish graphic representation of the NEO brand, but also inform the viewer. The slanted NEO letters on the negative of the design are borrowed from the classic and simple “Slant NEO” design, which serves as a secondary logo for the College.

“Northeastern Oklahoma” being set in the negative expands on the slanted NEO letters to provide the viewer both the official and more casual approaches to the NEO identity. The positive background coloration insinuates a border to encompass the “Northeastern Oklahoma” wording and compliments the “A&M College” wording on the bottom, right-hand corner of the badge.

The secondary logo is an important part of the NEO brand and is often used when design constraints prohibit the use of the NEO badge. The simplified “Slant NEO” logo is useful in design situations that require minimalism or when space and size are a constraint. The logo should be the same in relative size and dimensions to the slanted NEO present in the primary NEO logo. A variation on the slant logo includes “A&M College” beneath to identify NEO as an institution of higher learning.

After a busy bird feeding season, some Oklahomans are reporting small, localized die-offs of birds due to a potential Salmonella outbreak at their feeders. The bacterium is passed through droppings and can spread to other birds visiting the feeding station when they come into contact with contaminated droppings. Salmonella may be introduced by the feeding station’s regular visitors, or by roving flocks moving through to their breeding grounds. Common symptoms include lethargy, diarrhea and swelling of the mouth and crop. Birds healthy before the infection are often able to fight the infection, but stressed or young birds may struggle more. Ground feeding birds and longer distance migrants like pine siskins and American goldfinches may be more vulnerable to the bacterium. Rotating feeding station locations every three to four months can help prevent Salmonella outbreaks. If your bird feeder visitors are plagued with the infection, we offer the following spring-cleaning tips:

Close your feeding station for a day. Remove spilled seed and droppings from the ground below the feeders.

Soak empty feeders in a one-part bleach to nine-part water solution for at least 30 minutes and let the clean feeders dry overnight.

Relocate your feeding station to “fresh ground” at least 20 feet from your previous feeding station.

Offer fresh water near the new feeding station to help affected birds recover.

Is Your Small Business Prepared For A Disaster? Make Your Business Pandemic, Flood, Fire or Hardware Failure Ready Story by Braden Lampe, ABT Solutions/Contributing Writer

A

year ago, no one could have predicted that countless businesses would shift to a remote work model. The pandemic hit hard, and fast, and small/medium businesses (Small businesses) had to think on their toes. Many had only a few weeks to adapt. It was stressful and extremely challenging. Looking back on it, many small businesses wish they’d had a plan in place that would have made things easier. When the pandemic hit in February/March 2020, Small businesses had to absorb the huge cost of getting their employees up and running off-site. Not only was it costly, but it also took a lot of coordination and on-the-fly planning. This meant things slipped through the cracks, including cybersecurity. As they say, hindsight is 20/20. You may have wished you had a plan in place or had more time, but you didn’t. A vast majority didn’t. However, you can still plan for the future! While you never know when disaster is going to strike, you CAN be prepared for it. Whether that disaster is a pandemic, flood, fire or even hardware failure, there are steps you can implement today that will put you in a better place tomorrow. Here’s how to get started.

Put Your Plan into Writing. First and foremost, you should have a standard operating procedure to call on should something go wrong. For example, in early 2020, many

Small businesses didn’t have a security plan in place, let alone a remote work security plan. They had to make it up as they went, which just added to the challenges they were already experiencing. To get over this challenge, work with an experienced IT services company or managed services provider (MSP) to put together a plan. This plan should include a cybersecurity protocol. It should define what malware software employees should be using, what number they should call for 24/7 support, who to contact when they receive suspicious e-mails, how to identify suspicious e-mails and so on. More than that, it should outline exactly what needs to happen when disaster strikes. Pandemic? Here’s how we operate. Fire? Here’s what you need to know. Hardware failure? Call this number immediately. The list goes on, and it can be extensive. This, again, is why it’s so important to work with an MSP. They’ve already put together plans for other small businesses, and they know where to start when they customize a plan with you.

Invest in Security and Backups. While every business should have network security already in place, the reality is that many don’t. There are a ton of reasons why, but those reasons why aren’t going to stop a cyberattack. Hackers don’t care that you didn’t have time to put malware protection on your PCs; they just want money and to wreak havoc. When you have IT security in place, including firewall protection, malware software, strong passwords, and a companywide IT security policy, you put your business and all your employees in a much better place. All of this should be in place for both on-site employees and remote workers. With more people working from home going into 2021, having reliable IT security in place is more important than ever before.

Where Do You Begin? Some Small businesses have the time, money, and resources to invest in on-site IT personnel, but most don’t. It is a big investment. This is where partnering with an experienced IT services firm can really pay off. You may have employees in-office, or you may have a team working remotely – or you may have a mix of both. You need support that can take care of everyone in your organization while taking care of the data security of the business itself. This is where your IT partner comes into play. They are someone you can rely on 24/7 and someone who will be there for you during a pandemic or any other disaster.
