Letter from the Editor

As a young child, I was terrified of fireworks. When the annual city-wide Fourth of July celebration came around, I would dread it. I remember my mom telling me that it was loud, but that it was perfectly safe. As a child, all I knew is that the loud booms scared me to my core. My family would go, and I would either be cuddled in my mom’s lap, ears covered or hiding somewhere in the parked car trying to drown out the loud, ethereal and seemingly never ending booms. My mom would encourage me to uncover my eyes, and look at the pretty lights but I refused. I was severely frozen with dread. That fear went on for several years until one year, everything changed.

I was seven years old, and this year, I decided I was not going to be afraid. I remember feeling determined to go and enjoy the fireworks just like everyone else. My mom dialed the radio to the proper station, and the music began. I did plug my fingers in my ears, but this year, I kept my eyes wide open, and fixed on the sky.

I watched as the first streak of bright orange shot out of the cannon, and in a moment of pure magic, an explosion of color filled the black night.

The feeling of witnessing such a magical display was something new and different. The fear I had felt in years prior melted away and was replaced with a sense of awe. This is what I had missed all these years. This is why my mom had encouraged me to uncover my eyes and look up. I finally understood that the noise was worth seeing the magical display of light and color.

Fear is a tricky emotion. Though primal fears may be based on survival instincts designed to keep us safe, many times our own mind takes that fear and turns it into something completely irrational. It can make us believe in things that don’t even exist. Fear based on partial truths can easily grow into its own monster, bigger and uglier in our minds than it truly is in reality.

If you find yourself feeling afraid, remember to uncover your eyes and face your fear head on. Don’t shy away from it, don’t bury your head.

Happy 4th of July to all our dedicated Ponca City Monthly readers!

A Day at Ponca City Herb Fest

2023 marks the 30th year of the annual Ponca City Herb Festival. This event is known for being the longest-running plant and arts festival in Kay County. Each year, on the first Saturday of June, residents rush out of bed and flock to purchase plants and explore local artists and businesses. Herb Fest is held at the magnificent Cann Memorial Gardens. This setting serves as a vibrant backdrop to this already colorful event, and visitors can take in its beauty and history as they shop. There is something uniquely stimulating about Herb Fest, and it makes for a delightful Saturday outing.

I first attended Ponca City Herb Fest in high school, and it grew into a fun tradition with my mom. Though the hunt for herbs and plants sounds intense to some, I find Herb Fest peaceful altogether. As I step into one of the vendor’s booths, time stands still and I immerse myself in their work. With each visit, I am in awe of the art, clothing and handmade goods made by those within my community. That is what I look forward to the most. I find great joy

in discovering and supporting local businesses, and Herb Fest is the perfect place to do that.

I started my day early because I knew I had to snag a few coveted herbs before anyone else could. I was too excited to sleep in anyways. Once I arrived at the Cann Gardens, the weather had warmed up enough to where I was comfortable. The clouds provided plenty of shade, but not enough to make the morning gloomy. Weather-wise, everything was just right. As I stepped out of my car, I could smell the food cooking in the food court. Food and drink options varied from fried fair foods and lemonade to brisket and authentic tacos. The food court options appealed to all ages, and I observed many families enjoying whatever they ordered. As I passed the food court, I immediately noticed a vendor selling a wide variety of herbs. I purchased rosemary, lavender and parsley. I put them in a crate and hauled them to my car. I enjoyed the occasional whiff of rosemary as I made my way back. With the tougher part out of the way, I could start exploring the vendors and artists, which is my favorite part of Herb Fest.

Happily wandering down a brick path surrounded by colorful scenery felt very Wizard

of Oz-esque. I felt like Dorothy as I made my way through the booths. In the past, my mom and I enjoyed smelling the handmade goat’s milk soaps. We would bring home our favorite scents and distribute them to the rest of the household. So naturally, the Freed Family Farm booth was my first stop. The vendors were friendly, and they made sure to inform me of their products. When they weren’t speaking with me they were chatting and cracking jokes with each

other, just like a family would. I was drawn to the masculine scents, and I purchased a bar named Outdoorsmen. This particular scent was light, but very refreshing. This is true of most goat’s milk soaps, and I appreciate that quality. As I was checking out I noticed a little sign in the upper corner of the booth. It read, “Thank you for supporting our family business.” I couldn’t resist smiling.

Content with my first purchase, I was eager to see what Herb Fest had next in store. It wasn’t long before a strikingly colorful booth caught my attention. Local artists Chelsea McConnell and Red Dirt Rosie had their art displayed on the sides of the tent, as well as a couple of tables. I noticed that their art had some similarities. They both had pieces that were heavily inspired by native wildlife and flowers, and they utilized bright colors that are impossible to ignore. Overall, their works were fun to look at. I was especially drawn to Red Dirt Rosie’s paintings of the Oklahoma state bird, the scissor-tailed flycatcher. I ended up purchasing one of them, and I was more than happy to support a local artist.

Next on my journey, I came across a vendor I didn’t recognize. The name of the business was The Friday Creative Design Studio, and it was run by a girl who was my age or maybe a little older. The messages printed on the merchandise drew me in. I saw key chains, T-shirts and stickers that had messages of positivity and mental health awareness. I’ve seen this become a trend lately, and I say

that with a grateful tone. The Friday Creative’s products are marketed toward girls and women my age, and I believe that surrounding yourself with these positive reminders is very beneficial. Personally, it helps me to remember to slow down and not be so hard on myself. I noticed a quote that read, “Do it for your future self” in cut-out letters on the booth’s display table. I also noticed a T-shirt press off to the side. The vendor explained that I had the option to make a custom T-shirt or crew neck with whatever quote or design I liked. I knew right away that I wanted to do that. I chose a soft baby blue crew neck, and the vendor went straight to work. This vendor’s booth was super cute and trendy, and I appreciated the messages she chose to spread most of all.

After viewing the gorgeous variety of plants and vintage furniture, my trip came to a close. I had to stop at the food court on my way out. Upon my arrival, the Squeeze Me Lemonade menu caught my eye. In bright blue letters I read “Shark Water,” and I was instantly intrigued. The drink was made up of freshsqueezed lemonade mixed with a sweet blue raspberry flavor. On top of that, they added shark gummies, which I felt was a fun touch. Squeeze Me Lemonade provides visitors with classic lemonade with the option of a refreshing twist. As I sipped my shark water, I stood in line to get mini donuts at Holey Moley. I already knew that I wanted chocolate glaze, but I noticed that the menu

presented quite a variety. Holey Moley offers gourmet mini donut options, including Fruity Pebbles, s’mores and even cotton candy. The donuts themselves were delicious, and the fried flavor reminded me of funnel cake. If you enjoy fair food and sweets, Holey Moley’s mini donuts are the perfectly unique treat for you.

As I drove home from Herb Fest, I reflected on my trip with contentment. I got to do everything I wanted all while supporting community members. As I wandered through the event, I could see people of all ages smiling and enjoying the environment. There is something truly magical about Herb Fest, and it serves as a reminder that Ponca City as a community runs on love and passion. I’m looking forward to next year, as well as the many years to come!

Resource Counselor Christa Goodale and Guidance Counselor Relo Adams are helping support the mental health of youth in our community through their jobs within Ponca City Public Schools.

These two helped start the Bring Change to Mind (BC2M) Club in Ponca City. It’s a nationally known organization and our local club is the first one in Oklahoma. To date, there are 520 high school clubs and 16 pilot middle school clubs in 40 states. According to the Bring Change to Mind website at bringchange2mind.org, their North Star Statement is this, “BC2M activates and empowers you to join our fight to end stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness. United, we will create and advance innovative approaches and partnerships to start conversations around mental illness, share resources and tell stories so everyone can thrive in a stigma-free world.”

Initially, Goodale started the club as the Kindness Committee at East Junior High. She

talks about the motivation behind starting the committee. “Part of the reason I came up with the idea of the Kindness Committee was to do some preventative stuff like [figure out] how can we create community and connection. There’s evidence that random acts of kindness are good for your mental health.” Last year, this morphed into Bring Change to Mind, with a focus on mental health as well as spreading kindness.

Bring Change to Mind BC2M

Adams explains, “Everyone has a struggle that the next person doesn’t know about. And just being kind to somebody could really change the outcome of a lot of things. Being kind really affects mental health. So many people feel alone and just a kind word or gesture or even a smile could like really change someone’s decisions or

mood even. So, we still try to spread kindness. That’s a big part of our movement, along with lifting the stigma of mental health.”

This year, the club has been able to add a Reset Room at the high school. This room is a safe space where kids can go to reset if they need

a break from their day. Using a grant from the Ponca City School Foundation, they were able to purchase yoga mats, bean bags, meditation pillows, therapy workbooks, weighted blankets and a punching bag for the room. All can be used when kids are experiencing big emotions and need to work through them or just need a safe place to take a break.

During the school year, the club meets every Wednesday from 3:15-4:15 p.m. in the Assembly Center at the high school. Weekly meetings can look a lot of different ways. Some weeks, a particular student may have a topic they want to explore. In this case, they would do research to share with the group and lead a discussion on the topic. Some weeks, Goodale and Adams arrange for speakers to come and share their stories. Hearing someone else’s struggles can help each of us to feel less alone in our own struggles. The guest speakers might share about an area where they struggled or still struggle and how they’ve begun to overcome and build resiliencies in said areas. Knowing

they are not alone can be a game changer for students.

Weekly meetings also include snacks, if budget allows. Goodale and Adams have learned that snacks will bring in more kids, and the better the snacks, the better the turnout. One of the most well-attended meetings in the last year included free pizza, cookies and sodas. The club also participates in a myriad of community events. They’ve been in local parades and joined the Dearing House Walk for Child Abuse Prevention in April. They helped with Trunk or Treat during the Halloween season. They painted the fence at Dearing House and volunteered with the Chamber’s school supply fundraiser Stuff the Bus, as well as the Festival of Angels.

BC2M

In attendance at the last meeting was Alena Jennings, owner of The Doodle Academy. She talked to the students about the fact that her business is a safe place for anyone to come. Together, they also brainstormed ideas about how The Doodle can partner with the club on future projects. Green is the color for mental health awareness. Jennings, Goodale, Adams and the students discussed how they could use a green ribbon outside businesses as a sign of being a safe space for people. One student also suggested a sticker be made to put on phones and other items to send the message as well.

Club members also discussed summer plans. They will still meet over the summer, but plan to meet biweekly instead of weekly. Meetings will likely be held at the Ponca City Library and potentially at The Doodle Academy.

The club has hosted and participated in a lot of other fun activities this year. This spring they hosted an event where they brought New Life Trails to the high school. New Life Trails partners with animals to help support children mentally and emotionally. The club had over 800 students attend the event to hang with the animals.

A big favorite of club members was joining forces with the Student Council for “You Matter Week” at the high school this spring. This is a whole week focused on letting every student at school know that they matter. The effort is led each year by the Student Council, and the BC2M kids were so grateful that they got to join in helping this spring. They enjoyed the event so much they’re considering hosting a similar event in the fall.

As part of the week, the Student Council sent out an anonymous survey with questions regarding mental health that was taken by over 250 students. The survey indicated that

Piper Stitt Finds Success With KK’s Snow Cones

Story and photos by Kelsey Wagner

Editor’s Note: Piper is the daughter of Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt and his wife, Sarah.

Piper Stitt is 16 years old, and like many other teenagers her age, she is excited about purchasing her first car. In Piper’s family, like many in Oklahoma, a new car for a teen is a big expense. In the Stitt family, teenagers are expected to come up with their own way to pay for half of their first car.

“All our kids have saved up for their first cars; it’s really important they earn the money themselves and pay half,” says Piper’s mom, Sarah.

“My dad encouraged us to find our own ways to save money for our cars, so my sister and I decided to start a snow cone shack.”

“KK’s Snow Cones” is a name that represents both sisters, Katie and Kennedy (Piper). With

three summers of hard work under their belt, Piper is now inching closer to her savings goal.

Running a successful business requires careful planning and organization. Piper recalls the initial stages of their venture, admitting that she knew very little about the snow cone industry.

“I had to figure out everything - where to get syrups, candy, and other supplies. It took a lot of planning and budgeting,” she says. However, with the guidance and support of her parents, Piper and her sister dove in and opened shop.

When asked about the challenges she has faced along the way, Piper laughs and says the snow cone industry is not too complicated and that “It’s been a pretty smooth journey,” but credits the fact that it takes a lot of hard work and organization to keep things running smoothly.

“As long as you stay on top of everything, it’s pretty easy,” says Piper. If you enjoyed a snow cone at the Ponca City rodeo during the past

two years, chances are it was from KK’s Snow Cones. This marks Piper’s second summer serving snow cones at the rodeo in Ponca City.

Interacting with customers and attending events all over the state have brought Piper a lot of joy. She frequents events such as rodeos and foster care gatherings, where she gets to meet a variety of people and showcase her delicious snow cones, a welcome treat on a hot Oklahoma day. Although Piper sticks to traditional flavors, she entices customers with a range of mouthwatering toppings to enhance their experience.

With each event, Piper admits she finds herself really loving entrepreneurship.

“It feels amazing to know that this is my business, and I’m the one who started it,” she says proudly. The sense of accomplishment and the rewards of her hard work fuel her passion and drive to succeed.

When it comes to employees, Piper primarily

relies on her sister and close friends to assist her. While her sister is away at camp this summer, Piper has taken charge of the snow cone shack.

Piper’s enthusiasm and bright smile shines through as she explains her favorite part of her entrepreneurial journey.

“I love the fact that this is my creation and that it’s my hard work paying off,” says Piper. Her dedication to her craft, commitment to excellence, and the joy she finds in making others happy are the driving forces behind her growing success.

For those who may doubt their own abilities to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors, Piper offers some words of encouragement. “Don’t be afraid

to try something new and take risks. You really just have to believe in yourself and your ideas,” she advises.

Piper says she is so grateful for the love and support of both her parents but admits that even though her dad helped her buy the snow cone shack and supports and encourages her and her sister’s entrepreneurial journey, he isn’t much help when it comes to making snow cones.

“My Mom is the one who drives me to all the events and helps set up the stand each time. She really helps me run the snow cone business,” said Piper. Piper says over the past three summers, her mom has driven them to events all across the state, and when her sister and close friends are unable to help, Mom steps in and

works the stand from open to close with her as she did this time at the Ponca City Rodeo.

Through three summers of work, with thousands of miles of travel, Piper has taken it all in stride. With her entrepreneurial spirit and determination, Piper Stitt has proven that age is just a number when it comes to achieving success. As she continues to grow her business, there’s no doubt that KK’s Snow Cone Shack is just the first of many successful ventures to come for this young entrepreneur.

2 Guys & a Water gun

Many people love a clean property, whether that be a trimmed lawn and garden or an organized interior. Some also appreciate clean façades, the outer face of a home or commercial structure. Roman Bintz and Brian Fredericks have stepped in to provide that clean exterior with 2 Guys and a Water Gun and are now helping area businesses look their best.

2 Guys and Water Gun could also be viewed as 2 Guys and 2 Water Guns, as they use two separate processes for cleaning.

“We use high-pressure water to clean concrete, like parking lots and sidewalks and brick fronts,” Bintz said. “The soft wash is a chemical process we use to clean houses, siding and roofs.”

Fredericks elaborated on the chemical process. “It kills all the organisms, like algae growth on the side of a house,” he said.

They have made quite a name for themselves in less than two years, all from looking for something unique to do.

“We had an idea one night, and were working within 12 hours,” Bintz said.

The idea of a power washing business was intriguing to Bintz and Fredericks, as many people have cleaned their own porches and patios. Getting there professionally required much more research to find out how exactly to do it.

“We started this on our own. The first year we studied YouTube videos all summer,” Fredericks said.

They also learned from the job itself.

“We learned everything from our own experience and research,” Bintz said. “We didn’t know what soft wash was, and now that is our main wash.”

They began work in August 2021, and business is booming today. It was a long, slow start however, with self-advertising of their abilities to the community.

“We went door-to-door the first month,” Bintz said. Visiting with potential customers, along with a Facebook presence definitely proved useful, as it got their name out in the community. They also received help from home, as family members successful in business helped them create an ideal plan for 2 Guys and a Water Gun, especially as they grew in scope.

“My dad’s a strong businessman, so I learned a lot from that, and (also) my grandpa, so they taught me how to run a strong business,” Bintz said.

Today, they see business across the area, and have jobs booked for the next few months. Areas they serve include not just Ponca City, but also Newkirk, Blackwell, Tonkawa and Pawnee.

“We’ve made $7,000 this year, and have about $6,000 lined up,” Fredericks said.

It isn’t without its difficulties, however, as they have literally learned from mistakes on the job, each job to the next, each mistake a teachable moment on how to do the job better.

“It’s fun when everything goes right,” Fredericks said, describing some of the problems they face when working, and things don’t go

as planned. “There can be a loss in pressure from air leaks.”

Those can also be personal as well.

“You learn from your mistakes. I’ve been burned by bleach before,” Bintz said.

One might ask why they would start a business washing houses and buildings, especially when they will only get worse again with weather and dirt. It really is about the same thing as cleaning the interior — making sure it’s a clean façade.

“It is the upkeep of the house, like if you’d clean your car,” Bintz said. “It adds several years to the roof. If you don’t clean the house, it can get stained.”

Ultimately though it’s about customer satisfaction, helping a home or business owner see a new front that looks good to the public, something to take in.

“These last five months we scaled the business to where we are enjoying it as much as we can,” Bintz said. “When things go right, that is one of my favorite things to do, and when you get good results for people. We take pride in our work.”

Finding My Ponca City

For me, Ponca City was always a place made up of distant childhood memories and hazy images conjured up using the details of my parents’ stories about their hometown. If I was asked to describe my strongest memory of Ponca, I would relate the ritual I had of going down to Hastings with my grandparents and renting the newest Pokemon movie whenever I was in town to visit them. In our current world of streaming media, the action of renting a physical DVD at a store demonstrates how long ago these memories, and my time in Ponca, took place. For most of my life, I knew very little about Ponca City as it is today.

So, when I had the opportunity for an internship in Ponca City, I was incredibly excited. Both of my parents grew up in Ponca City and went to high school together, which is where they met. On both sides of my family, from my grandparents to my aunts and uncles, everyone has their own stories of Ponca. With this

internship, I realized that I would have the ability to explore the city for myself and make my own memories, along with discovering aspects of the past I had heard so much about.

Before my first day of work, my mom decided that we should drive from Claremore (where I currently live) to Ponca so that she could show me around and help me feel more prepared to come back on my own. After completing the two-hour drive, the first location we visited had nothing to do with my parents’ past and was completely about utility. Our first stop was the Osage Casino, the place where I would be spending one night a week for the entire summer. With a sprawling metropolis of a parking lot and a lobby full of beeping and chiming slot machines (one particular machine sounds like a dolphin and it now continually annoys me every time I try to check in), it was a far different type of building than the ones that were always featured in the stories of my

relatives. It was shiny, new and exciting. In many ways, it represented how I felt about Ponca City and all the opportunities I would have available to me here.

Afterwards, we traveled across the road to drive past my dad’s old house. When we arrived, it looked nothing like I had imagined. In my mind, especially with my father’s stories of growing up and pretending that he was an isolated cowboy in the wilderness, I imagined a place in the middle of nowhere surrounded by trees and

containing wild animals a bit more intimidating than the cows that quietly grazed in the pasture next door. It was … well, it was completely ordinary. In hindsight, this seems obvious, but a location that I’d spent my entire life hearing about had taken on a life of its own in my imagination. It was strange to be faced with the reality.

We spent the rest of the day driving around Ponca with one of my only remembered landmarks from when I was a kid being Brace Books. Even back in my video store-renting days, I still loved to read and had begged my grandparents to take me to the nearest bookstore. The rest of Ponca though was new and exciting. It was strange to think

that my mom was traveling down the unfamiliar streets around us going through the same type of memories that I do when I drive around Claremore. This foreign place had an element of home for her that I couldn’t connect with.

Only a few days later, I returned back to Ponca City alone. To say that I was a bit intimidated is an understatement. Not only was I starting a new job, but I was also staying in a new town and surrounded by new people. As I slowly drove my car down Grand Avenue (an activity that my mom referred to as “dragging Grand”) looking for an available parking spot, I had no idea what to make of this strange place that all of my loved ones had once lived in and intimately known.

Slowly though, I’ve come to know Ponca City in my own way. It’s only been a few weeks, but I’ve already observed so many things that make this town special.

First, Ponca City has a particular focus on beauty. From the imaginative fox statues that stand guard outside of so many of the town’s buildings, the art that adorns the windows of the businesses on Grand Avenue, to the stunning simplicity of the nature curated in the flower beds and parks of Ponca City, there is evidence everywhere of all the

people of this town do to make this place both stunning and special.

Beyond their dedication to caring about the physical aspects of their town, the citizens of Ponca City care about their people too. From my first day in Ponca City to now, everyone I’ve met has welcomed me with open arms and expressed a deep love for this town and all the things that make it a special place. I’ve lived in two major cities in my life, both New York City and London, and yet, it’s this city in Oklahoma that has demonstrated the most pride in its community and its history.

Ultimately, my time in Ponca City is only just beginning. There are so many other aspects of this unique place to explore and understand. For example, I’ve yet to grab a meal from Taco Stop, a restaurant that both of my parents swear has some of the best food in Ponca. I haven’t explored the Marland Mansion or gotten a close-up view of the Pioneer Woman statue. However, so much has changed from that first drive through town where I couldn’t quite connect with the love and nostalgia that my mother had for the place she’d grown up. My appreciation for Ponca City is very different from hers, but this place has made an impression on me and now when I drive through these streets, I drive down past places filled with beloved art and memories of my own.

Ponca City’s Hall of Heroes is tucked away in a quiet part of downtown on North First Street. A staple in Ponca City’s art community, it has been housed in a series of shops along Grand Avenue for many years. Now in its newest home, a much larger facility than any prior establishment and at only a short walk north of Grand Avenue, the business has a chance to stretch its legs and offer more to the public, all to keep promoting the arts culture in Ponca City. David Guinn is the proprietor of the store, first opening on May 22, 1993, this year marking a 30-year anniversary for the business.

“It’s always been my dream to open a comic book store, but I didn’t realize you have to determine how long you want to be open, as well,” he said. “I’m very grateful I’ve been open so long, but for 30 years, who knew?”

It is the realization of a dream, a childhood love of all things artistic, maybe even ‘nerdy,’ all found at home in Ponca City.

His offerings include comic books, collectible card games, graphic novels, Japanese anime and board and role-playing games.

“We’ll soon add a (vinyl) record store, and we sell disc golf, too, because I like something outdoorsy to do because it’s popular now,” he said.

A video game section has its own owner, Victor Rocha.

“He does all the video games, with the consoles and cleaning discs,” Guinn said, adding that the video games were once part of his store, but due to the new size of the location, he couldn’t continue it, at least not himself. “It was too much. I didn’t want to lose that customer base, so I (sold) it to him.”

What is a popular business downtown started in humble beginnings, with a teenager spending time in a similar store in Peoria, Illinois.

“I hung out in a place like that in

high school, and it was called ‘Outer Limits,’ and it went out of business between my junior and senior year of high school, and I saw firsthand what happened to the kids who suddenly didn’t have a place to hang out,” he said, adding how much he enjoyed playing the games at the store.

He had a dream of opening his own store of the same type, but it would be years later and many miles away before that dream was realized.

Ponca City is far removed from Peoria. Guinn is the youngest of several siblings, and his older brothers and sister, like so many others, would find their way to Kay County through the oil and gas industries. He ultimately relocated here as well.

“My brothers and sister are older than I, and they followed the oil field in the 1980s, and once they started having kids, my mom moved down to be with the grandkids,” he said. “When I finished college, I came down.”

Before moving southwest, he attended his first comic convention in Chicago during high school.

“My first convention I did in my sophomore year in Chicago and I made $2,200 in five hours, and in comparison, the job I had, I made about $2.10 an hour,” he said.

Those comic conventions were a big inspiration on later opening a store, even before he found Ponca City.

“It gives a chance for collectors to attend these events, to search for items they may not be able to find at their local store,” he said. “They can meet celebrities, they can get autographs, attend panels and participate in CosPlay.”

CosPlay is short for Costume Playing, where fans get to reenact their favorite character, such as from Star Wars or Harry Potter.

He first landed further north of Ponca City,

in Winfield, Kansas, where he worked at a the Rubbermaid factory. While working for Rubbermaid, he attended comic conventions, which was a very profound experience. For one, he was able to get a grasp on business issues, but he also saw a chance to realize a dream of opening a store that impacted him in his youth, something he could do for youth locally in the region.

Where he opened would be a major decision in its own right, as he scouted locations in Stillwater, Enid, Wichita and Arkansas City. Ponca City would ultimately be his choice.

“There was a sports card convention in March of 1993. I set up and did the show, and met a lot of people, and decided then that this was the town, and opened two months later,” he said. Stillwater and Enid remained on his radar, and he opened sister stores in those communities, but would close them due to the difficulty of operating stores in multiple cities.

“It is hard to be in two places at once,” he said. The store he grew up with in Peoria somehow had a coincidental connection with his first store in Ponca City, at least in the name, though he would later change it.

“Our first store was at 216 E. Central, and it was called ‘Outer Limits’ for the first nine months it was open, though we changed the name,” he said, adding that he only had limited

merchandise when he opened. “It was slow in the beginning. I had to live in the back of the store for three years.”

He would spend the next few decades moving across downtown Ponca City, renting most of the places they were in.

“It has been tough. This is our sixth location in Ponca City. We rented the first 22 years, so you have to go with the flow of the situation,” he said. “If you grow, you move; if rent is too high, you move.”

One positive he has seen in the past years of being open in downtown Ponca City is that no matter where they move, they still have a customer base, a following who seeks them out, wherever they may move.

They are now in their own location, one with much more room for what they sell, including a second story that also has room for role-playing activities.

“We bought this in July 2020. This was a huge increase in size, because our previous location was only 3,100 sq. ft., and we knew we’d have to move because of the size,” he said. “This is 10,000 sq. ft. and it has a full upstairs, and we built a game room upstairs.”

They also can expand inventory because they own the facility and aren’t paying rent anymore.

“It changes the way you conduct business once you get away from rent,” he said. “You cannot believe how much things change once you don’t have to pay rent anymore.”

Guinn has an extensive method to track inventory, one that allows him to find anything in the store, no matter where it is when a customer walks in the door. A small team also helps make that extensive method easier.

“When I went in (the convention) I looked around and I was about to memorize who had items, and how much they were. It was that

“A lot of people shop locally, especially with stores like mine. A lot of people will search your address and find you,” he said. “I didn’t want to move off Grand, because I wanted the kids riding their bikes to the store, but we’re still near Grand.”
28 JULY 2023

knowledge of knowing where an item was and being able to sell it to them,” he said. “My motto at the store is — if we can’t find it, we can’t sell it. If someone asks for something, then I have to know where it is.”

The building may not be the oldest downtown, but it does have a history of its own.

“If people had been in Ponca a long time, they’d know the building as McVay’s Western Wear,” he said. “It was probably built in the 1950s.”

He is also expanding into a new store, which his daughter will open in Enid, where he once operated years ago. The new store will be much larger than the one he first opened so long ago.

“My daughter has decided she wants one of the stores, so we’re going to help her open in Enid,” he said. “I originally opened with 50 boxes of comics. To put that in perspective, I’m going to open my daughter’s store with 250 boxes.”

There is also a new mural decorating the rear exterior of the store, perfectly visible from Union Street or Cleveland Street. It was painted by Todd Alexander, who created murals on a previous Hall of Heroes location in Ponca City, as well as their former location in Enid.

“It is a red dragon from Dungeons & Dragons, with a warrior named Warduke,” he said.

Guinn’s interests were once only a subculture for teenagers. Today, though, it is a multi-billiondollar entertainment industry, with many movie franchises themed after superheroes, anime and other such concepts.

“It used to be for kids that were (socially awkward) and they could find and respond to these worlds they read about; you can get lost in these worlds, superheroes and fantasy comic books,” he said. “Once they became blockbuster movies, it was almost acceptable to be a ‘nerd.’”

“There is not a lot to do here in town. The kids don’t have a rink or bowling alley or movie theater, so this provides a safe place for likeminded kids to hang out,” he said. “You come in off the street, everyone has the same interests. It is very welcoming because we all like the same stuff.”

PARKS & RECREATION

Memory Making Facilitators

Ponca City’s Parks & Recreation Department covers a lot of ground, both literally and figuratively. Parks & Rec runs the RecPlex, Senior Center, Wentz Pool and Ambuc Pool. They maintain all of those facilities, as well as 30 parks, six walking/jogging trails, seven shelter houses, three disc golf courses, five splash pads, as well as Lake Ponca and its many operations. They mow over 730 acres of local land and maintain their own greenhouses where they grow 30,000 plants and flowers used in flowerbeds and plantings all over our community. Made up of 31 employees, our Parks & Recreation Department is a well-oiled machine that helps our community thrive.

Parks & Rec Director Eric Newell can speak to any aspect of the department but is quick to recognize that his people are what make Parks & Rec what it is. “I think it’s important that everyone realizes it’s not me. I’m the one that everyone sees because I’m the Director. While I appreciate the mayor recognizing the work I’ve done and the vision I’ve had, I think it’s more important that my people are recognized. I’ve been put in a position to be the administrator to make sure everyone else has what they need. Parks & Rec is a lot of activity and a lot of responsibility. I’ve got really good people and that’s the

only reason why I can succeed. If I didn’t have the good people, I couldn’t succeed. I’m only as good as my team and my team’s great.”

Parks & Rec is in charge of running the Senior Center. The Senior Center consists of three employees who run the center and cook the 40-50 meals they serve each day. The Senior Center typically facilitates 5-6 programs per day to keep seniors engaged and active. The Center recently underwent a large restoration.

The RecPlex has five full-time employees and is one of the

larger divisions under the Parks & Rec umbrella. Under the management of Parks & Rec, the RecPlex has gone from 30% to 95% coverage at the front desk. This makes the facility more accessible to members as staff is nearly always available to answer questions and assist members.

Parks & Rec also maintains Lake Ponca and all properties related to the lake. Recently Parks & Rec partnered with Phillips 66 to install a new kayak rental kiosk at the lake, located south of the swim beach on Checkstand Road. The kiosk is self-contained and self-serve, meaning community

members can rent the kayaks at any time using their smart phone.

Parks & Rec has optimized Unity Gym over the last several years. The facility has batting cages and pitching available now and is frequently rented out by basketball, volleyball, baseball and other teams wishing to practice in the space. Parks &

Rec has been able to increase rentals of the facility substantially because of these upgrades. Parks & Rec also provides maintenance to the ball fields at the RecPlex, as well as those at Dan Moran.

Wentz Camp & Pool, as well as Ambuc Pool, are also run by Parks & Rec. Both pools hire part-time help in the summer. Wentz Camp

& Pool has undergone renovations over the last few years and typically rents every weekend mid-May through mid-October during their open season. Parks & Rec also hosts a 4th of July event at Wentz, made particularly special by the fact that it’s the oldest pool in Oklahoma.

When it comes to horticulture, Parks & Rec has four experts on staff. Of this group Eric says, “They basically plant, cultivate, sew, mulch and manage every flower on

city property.” This includes, but is not limited to, plantings at the RecPlex, City Hall, Ponca City Library, Marland’s Grand Home, Marland Mansion, Cann Gardens, downtown plants and more. Much of their work involves pulling plants from the greenhouses they manage to plant in areas around town. Many of the plants have to be transported again in the winter, as they can’t survive our harsh winters. The team plans what will go in each area with great forethought. They work incredibly hard to make our community vibrant and full of color through the areas they plant.

The group taking care of parks is made up of 16 full-time employees. These positions include skilled maintenance workers, like a certified Playground Safety Inspector, Certified Pool Operators and a small engine mechanic, to name a few. These gentlemen are responsible for our parks and recreational areas looking shipshape. Over the last few years, they’ve taken the Lake Ponca Campgrounds from being overgrown with no view of the lake to being

one of the most beautiful campsites in the state. Eric relays this story shared with a Parks employee by someone who saw him clearing out trees at the campground. “My grandpa used to take me fishing right here where you’re cleaning up. I could never get my grandkid down here and now I can. I can fish the same spot that me and my grandpa fished.” Eric goes on to add, “And that’s why we do it. That’s why we do what we do because we are the memory-making division of the city. I love the fact that we’re able to help provide those memories for other people.” Parks & Rec has a long list of employees who can boast a lengthy tenure with the department. This speaks to Eric’s leadership and the respect the group has for each other.

Eric is adamant about Parks & Rec being a team effort. “It’s not about me. It’s never about me. My job is to make sure these guys have what they need to succeed. Kids Say the Darnedest Things

Biofreeze Please

As most parents know, bedtime for kiddos can be challenging. It never fails that each night when bedtime rolls around, both of my girls suddenly get a robust burst of energy, or they inexplicably become very hungry. (As if just 20 minutes prior they hadn’t mercilessly annihilated an entire family-size bag of BBQ chips, paired with a pallet full of fruit snacks.) They keep me on my toes with their array of sleep-dodging tactics, and I have become conditioned to expect and accept that they are going to get up a minimum of three times per night after being tucked in, and I am usually very prepared for whatever they throw at me.

“Thirsty?” “I’ve already conveniently placed a bottle of water by your bed.” “Hungry?” “Here’s a bag of pre-peeled apple slices cut into stars just the way you like them.” “Not tired?” “I know that can’t be true because I have watched you run approximately 893,737 laps around this house today, without stopping even once for a break.”

I had become so skilled at mitigating nighttime meltdowns, that I didn’t think there was

anything that they could hurl at me that I wouldn’t be prepared for. However, that hilariously changed a few weeks ago when my oldest daughter who is 7 (not 70) told me that she absolutely could not fall asleep without first applying Biofreeze to her knees. I immediately covered my mouth and started hee-hawing, but the very serious and concerned look on her face told me that this request was no laughing matter. She was quick to tell me that when she stays the night at her Nana’s, they “doctor” their “bad knees” with Biofreeze so that they can get a good night’s rest. She was devastated when I broke the bad news to her that there wasn’t any Biofreeze to be found in our house, because luckily her young and spry parents haven’t been met with the need for any yet. My husband and I still get so tickled every time we think about that conversation, but you can bet that our next Walmart trip will include a stroll down the pharmacy aisle to pick up a tube or two of the magical and highly coveted- Biofreeze.

Get Fit!

KERA KESTER

The fireworks. The flag inspired outfits. The burgers and potato salad and cupcakes, oh my! Holidays are the perfect time to relax, be around loved ones … and potentially get a day off from work, of course! As tempting as it may be to let all disciplines and consistent habits fly out of the window, we know that resisting that temptation is still very important. So, how do we balance kicking back and enjoying ourselves with sticking to the healthy habits we’ve created? Here are five tips for staying independent from old ways this July 4!

1. Preplan your day and plate

Being dedicated to a thought-out and solid plan will serve you well. If you know the 4th of July night will include high-caloric foods, then eat a small breakfast or lunch and save calories for the celebration. Also, have an idea of what you will put on your plate before your sight and smell senses have the opportunity to take the driver’s seat. This does not mean that you have to steer clear of the barbecue beans. The idea here is to make sure

the base and majority of your plate is protein and vegetables. Get full on these specific food items first. They hold an abundance of nutrients and provide the satiety principles that will help you get full and satisfied without feeling the craving or need to be indulgent.

2. Avoid continuous consumption

When food is sitting out, we may feel like we want to nibble at different points throughout the day or night. Many companies have capitalized on the common human tendency to eat by sight or boredom. When the thought comes to eat, really consider whether or not you are hungry or if water can satisfy your belly as your food digests. At times, our minds trick us into thinking we want food when, we are just thirsty. Additionally, the body takes longer to break down and digest a meal full of fiber. So, making a point to consume one plate of fibrous food selections before any of the less nutritious foods is a good idea.

3. Eat with focus and intention

As fireworks are popping off, and kids are running around and people are filling their plates with food, it is easy to eat more than necessary. Distracted consumption can increase how much food you ingest by up to 1,000 calories. Additionally, casually eating without focus can cause you to eat quicker than your body’s signals of fullness can keep up with. Be thoughtful of your portion sizing and take a plate home with you for the next day if you feel you’ll want more at another time.

4. Be picky with your indulgences

When there are ten desserts in front of you, your initial impulse might be to try them all or binge on one food item. It is important to remember that this is not the only time a piece of pecan pie or a hot dog will be accessible. You do not have to eat every food item that your taste buds enjoy as if it is the last time you will ever see it again. Pick what you have a taste for the most at that time and know that you can have any other food on another day. Additionally, use your friends or family to help! Split food with them or take a bite of something you have a taste for from their plate instead of splurging on a whole bowl of potato salad. If you are going to indulge in wine or alcohol, then fill just a fourth of a cup with it and maybe don’t join in a game of beer pong.

5. Avoid fear!

It is okay to have a higher calorie day. It is okay to let one day of the week go by without being rigid or 100% on point. The 80/20 principle is a great rule of thumb because we all know that being human means being imperfect and not following every single rule to a tee at all times. If you eat more than usual or miss one workout, take a deep breath. You can get back on track with your next meal or your next day. You are still beautiful and worthy of love. Try not to be so consumed with ideals and perfectionism that you let go of having good times, enjoying yourself and enjoying those around you!

I am so excited to celebrate this Independence Day with you all! My hope is always to help or encourage any way that I can. May July be a month of blessings and amazing moments within your lives. Have a spectacular holiday weekend and Happy 4th of July!

platonic

Do you think it’s possible, while in adulthood, to have and maintain long-lasting, completely platonic friendships with members of the opposite sex? I had never really put much thought into that question, and it wasn’t until I was flipping through my AppleTV+ app and ran across a new series starring Rose Byrne and Seth Regan, aptly named Platonic, that I even began forming an opinion on the matter. I’m still not sure where I land on the subject, but I do know that I have enjoyed each and every moment spent binge-watching this uniquely hilarious show.

Platonic follows two former best friends, who while in the throes of their own midlife crises, come back together to try and help one another make it through life’s trials and challenges. It shines a brilliant comedic light on a very relatable and undertold love story, as it’s not a romantic love at all, but a lasting and impressionable love nonetheless. It is light and funny and hilariously relatable at times, and the effortless on-screen comedic chemistry between Byrne and Regan is a joy to watch. It is a refreshing reminder of how important friendship can be, and I hope you’ll love it just as much as I have.

Chamber Buzz

Happy July, Ponca City! I have served almost a complete month as CEO/President of the Ponca City Chamber and I am loving it! I am so blessed to have the opportunity to collaborate with so many new business partners who give back to our community, not to mention I get to work with an amazing team. Our Chamber is so blessed to have Tiffany, Zach and Kelly, who support our community endlessly! This new role has truly given me the opportunity to see Ponca City from a different perspective, and I am excited about the avenues for economic growth,

collaboration and networking, and community development.

Did you know the Ponca City Chamber is the ONLY Chamber in the state that has only one fundraiser every other year? That’s right, and 2023 is auction year at The Party at the Palace! The Chamber team and planning committee have been excitedly preparing for this biennial fundraiser, which is the only source to raise funds for initiatives, projects and community causes the Chamber supports.

Thank you to all the sponsors of The Party at the Palace and to those who have donated auction items! If you or your business would like to donate an item, basket or service for the live or silent auction, we would love to showcase it and would greatly appreciate the contribution.

Tickets are available on Monday, July 10, and the cost for each is $50, and they include two drink tickets, all you can eat heavy hors

d’oeuvres and full access to the live and silent auctions! The Party at the Palace is a premier event that promises to engage attendees in great fun, creating an unforgettable experience. Come enjoy great fellowship, networking and wonderful music. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, let us know, and complimentary tickets come with the sponsorship!

As many of you know, I have been traversing the city to meet our community partners in person! Those of you whom I have met know that I believe every organization always has room for growth and pragmatic change. I welcome your thoughts and ideas; and remember; my door is ALWAYS open at the Chamber. I love Ponca City!

COCKTAIL COCKTAIL MONTH MONTH OF THE

FROM BEACHES TO BARS:

When the beach is out of reach, I often turn to the power of my imagination to whisk me away. With my blender skills on full display, I concoct a frozen adult beverage that tastes like a slice of vacation. As I dip my toes into the kiddie pool in my backyard and take a sip of the frosty Piña Colada, I’m instantly transported to a tropical paradise within my mind, embracing the ultimate form of escapism. So, come aboard my imaginary yacht, and let’s set sail for Puerto Rico, the birthplace of the Piña Colada, where together we’ll uncover the sun-soaked secrets behind its creation.

The most popular origin story takes us to the famous Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, the bustling capital of Puerto Rico. Picture this: it’s the 1950s, and Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, the head bartender at the time, is on a mission to create a drink that will please every guest at the hotel. He’s determined to capture the essence of Puerto Rico in a single glass, like a liquid love letter to the island.

The cocktail’s popularity soared faster than a seagull chasing a French fry. Visitors to the island couldn’t stop raving about it, celebrities like Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. couldn’t resist its allure, and even John Wayne and Joan Crawford were caught with Piña Coladas in hand. In 1978, the Piña Colada was officially crowned the national drink of Puerto Rico, solidifying its status as a beloved island treasure. The rest, as they say, is history.

The classic Piña Colada has just a few well-balanced ingredients: rum, coconut cream, and pineapple. The sweetness of the coconut balances the tartness of the pineapple, and the rum cuts through the cream to give it just enough bite.

Get creative and experiment with various ingredients to personalize this cocktail, fearlessly venturing into uncharted flavor territories. Or stay true to tradition and revel in the timeless allure of the original, savoring the legendary cocktail just as it was meant to be enjoyed. The choice is yours, to boldly innovate or blissfully embrace tradition!

• 2 oz. rum

• 1 oz. coconut cream

• 1 oz. heavy cream

• 6 oz. fresh pineapple juice

• 1/2 cup ice

Mix rum, cream of coconut, heavy cream, and pineapple juice in a blender. Add ice and mix for 15 seconds. Serve in a 12-oz. glass and garnish with fresh pineapple and a cherry.

The history of the margarita is a bit hazy. There are many stories of its creation, including that of the hotel manager creating the margarita because his girlfriend liked salt in her drinks. Or the bartender in Juárez who did not know how to make a Magnolia, so he improvised and made what is now known as the margarita. Or the woman (named Margarita) who served a tequila and Cointreau drink to her socialite friends and word spread of “Margarita’s drink.” Regardless of how the margarita came to be, one thing is certain. Margaritas are one of the most widely loved and ordered cocktails in this country, and the best margaritas in Kay County are found at El Patio Mexican Restaurant.

One of the greatest things about a margarita is its ability to be diverse. Fruit forward, traditional, floral, spicy, frozen, on the rocks, there really is something for everyone when it comes to variations.

The Melendez family has made El Patio the go-to spot for handcrafted margaritas for

IF YOU FIND YOURSELF IN …

Denver and you’re looking for a stellar margarita, go to Toro Latin Kitchen + Lounge, located in Hotel Clio in the Cherry Creek neighborhood. Sit at the bar. Order the Mercado Margarita. Made with jalapeno-infused tequila, passion fruit, lime, agave and hints of hibiscus and rosemary, this will be one of the best drinks you will ever order … anywhere. Order the Sweet Corn Empanadas … for yourself. Sit back, order and savor a second margarita, and remember to thank me later for advising you not to share those empanadas.

20+ years, and there is no shortage of margarita selections on the menu to satisfy every tequiladrenched craving.

Highlights include the Texas Margarita, laced with orange liqueur for an extra umph of crispness; the Sangria Margarita, frozen and mixed with El Patio’s own sangria blend for a fusion of fruity and sour; the Jalapeño Margarita, featuring jalapeño-infused tequila, lime, sour mix and fresh jalapeños, delivering a punch of spiciness. But it’s hard to beat the House Margarita. Well known for a reason, it’s the perfect blend of tart, sweet, salt and sour. It’s summertime in a glass.

Chilaquiles Rojos are perfect for soaking up some of that sweet, acidic tequila goodness. Corn tortilla chips, bathed in tomatillo salsa and red salsa, are topped with steak and melty cheese. Served alongside beans, freshly made pico de gallo and guacamole, this dish has a richness and a kick at the end that will wake your taste buds up. Important note: Chilaquiles are an acquired taste. As the chips are soaked in salsa, it is very possible for the chips to lose some of their crunch if not eaten quickly. Fortunately, eating quickly is a skill I possess, making chilaquiles (originally a breakfast dish) one of my favorite Mexican dishes.

It feels like Mexican fare has circumvented the way we eat and drink in this country. How amazing it is that there are so many options to get your Mexican fix, and still most places have something that makes them stand out from the others. Tequila and lime combined with sunshine are celebrated every day at El Patio, so grab a seat, order an icy, refreshing margarita and enjoy life. Happy Eating!

Star Spangled Strawberry Poke Cake

The Strawberry Poke Cake is the first recipe I learned to make mostly on my own. I would bring this cake to every family gathering or church social every summer! Over the years, I’ve complicated the recipe to make it more intricate, but even its basic recipe is a delicious cake.

This cake is perfect for summer because it’s served chilled. I always seem to make too much of the “frosting,” but you can save any extra and freeze it for an ice cream-like substance. Perfect for hot summer days!!

If you make a two-layer version of the cake, you can make it extra fancy by making a compote with some strawberries and blueberries. Spread that between the two layers.

Happy 4th of July!

CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW

DOGS:

A History of Our Best Friends

The phrase “man’s best friend” was first used by Frederick the Great of Prussia sometime in the 1700s. It is just as applicable today. When my friend and I visit the Herb Festival, she knows I will want to stop and meet each and every dog or puppy — and she graciously puts up with me!

DOGS: A History of Our Best Friends tracks the history of dogs, humans and our relationship. At first, dogs helped us track and hunt; they guarded our families. They helped us by hauling heavy loads. When humans began domesticating sheep and goats, dogs kept large herds safe from danger. Dogs became trusted partners, family members and beloved pets.

Believe it or not, purse dogs are not a recent trend instigated by Hollywood. In the first century BCE, Chinese royals began favoring small dogs that could easily sit in a lap. In the Middle Ages, European royalty decided it was fashionable to carry a small, beribboned dog. Henry III of France actually carried his favorite fluffball in a basket tied around his neck!

Physicians in the

Middle Ages didn’t know why, but having a dog lick a serious injury gave the patient a much better chance of survival. We now know there’s a chemical in a dog’s saliva that prevents infection. In the 16th century, doctors told patients with stomach problems to hold a small dog to their chest. (We now know that petting a dog lowers a person’s stress and blood pressure levels.)

Want to know why Dalmatians were adopted by fire stations in the 18th and 19th centuries? How the multitude of dog breeds we now have suddenly appeared? How dogs served in wars? How dogs help us today? Read this lovely book. Now I need to go snuggle my dogs!

BOOK REVIEW AN EASY DEATH

I think I’ve mentioned previously that I enjoy books based in an alternate history. An Easy Death is set in a shattered version of the United States. It all began with the assassination of Franklin D. Roosevelt. America’s woes continued: the vice president died of influenza. Wall Street crashed, triggering the Great Depression. Droughts resulted in the Dust Bowl. Another influenza pandemic caused a drop in the population.

The country could no longer protect itself, so other countries took advantage and appropriated chunks of the U.S.A.: Canada from the north and Mexico from the south. The Russian Tzar settled in California after fleeing Russia; California and Oregon then joined to form the Holy Russian Empire. Twelve of the original 13 colonies chose to become part of the British empire to keep from being absorbed by Canada; they chose the name Britannia. The South united as Dixie. Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico formed Texoma. The remaining Great Plains and Rocky

Mountains became New America.

Lizbeth Rose is a 19-year-old gunslinger from Texoma, where magic is recognized, but mistrusted. She is tracked down by two Russian wizards who insist she work as their local guide and gunnie. They’re desperately searching for a low-level magician who may be able to help save their young tzar’s life.

As the two wizards and Gunnie Rose set out on their quest, they are repeatedly attacked by enemies. Someone powerful wants them to fail in their mission. Lizbeth has never failed a customer; she has standards and it will take all of her skill and courage to successfully get everyone out safely.

An Easy Death is the first novel in Charlaine Harris’s newest series, Gunnie Rose. It was also named as a TIME Magazine Top Ten Best Fantasy Book of 2018. I truly enjoyed this book!

Compost It

I attended The Mother Earth News Fair in Lawrence, Kansas, at the end of April and it was fantastic! I highly recommend going to one if you get the chance. It was great to be back with my crunchy people. That little thing called COVID-19 derailed the last three years of the fairs, sponsored by Mother Earth News. When attending in the past, I have met (and interviewed) people, including Ed Begley Jr., herbalists who trained with Rosemary Gladstar and even heard Temple Grandin speak on cows and herd management. So many interesting and knowledgeable people in farming, permaculture, agriculture, sustainable living and so much more, including one of my favorite topics: composting.

So, let us talk of ways to compost. And ways to make your compost do the heavy lifting when growing things in the garden, with minimal work from the gardener. As I write, I have a two-gallon lidded container with dandelions and burdock “stewing” in rainwater for three weeks to create a fertilizer. Then there is the large compost pile that I have had going for 10 years. Then there are the piles of grass clippings that I put under my flowers in front of the fence. Who needs to buy fertilizer when you have compost, grass clippings and weeds? Not I.

Why Compost?

Nicky Schauder was the compost queen at the fair in Lawrence this year. She described good soil as “a chocolate cake consistency with a rich, diverse profile and good water-holding capability.” I mean, she had me at comparison to chocolate cake. And she also said one other thing I remember distinctly, “We want to be lazy gardeners.” Yes. Yes, we do want to be lazy gardeners.

Liquid Gold From Weeds

One easy way to make a compost tea is from weeds. Some perennial weeds, such as dandelions, comfrey, nettles and marshmallows, are extremely efficient at scavenging nutrients. Why waste these nutrition powerhouses? Instead of digging them up and throwing them away, take your “weeds” and soak them in rainwater in a large container. Stir at least weekly, but leave soaking for three to four weeks. Warning: this concoction does not smell wonderful. And it is blackish

brown. But it is gold for the garden. When the four weeks (or so) are up, strain through mesh into another container and dilute it 10 to one with rainwater, if possible. Pour on plants and the garden to add nutrients to the soil as your garden grows.

can tell what some things are (or were) close to the top, but as the scraps, paper and greens decompose, you are left with the “chocolate” for your cake. To get the best aeration and quickest decomposition of your compost, make sure you are layering correctly: start with straw or leaves then add greens or kitchen scraps and then browns which can be shredded paper or cardboard and then water everything. Once you get the base going, you can add in greens, browns and water as needed.

The ideal size for a compost pile is between three to five feet in length, width and depth. Any smaller and it won’t decompose and any bigger it is hard to turn and manage. Another thing to remember is your “browns” need to be cut or torn into small pieces. Kitchen scraps will break down, but large pieces of cardboard, newspaper or paper in general will not disintegrate at the same rate. So, enlist your small helpers to rip and tear for the compost pile. Note: though it is recommended to “turn” your compost pile once a week, I am lazy and instead of turning it, I fork it and move it around with a big yard fork. The sturdier the fork, the better. Those thin-tined forks don’t really hold up to moving compost. You can also just stab it a few times before you water the compost pile (think before it rains).

Grass Clippings

If you mow your own yard, invest in a bagger to capture the grass clippings. Think of all that nitrogen. Grass clippings count as brown in the compost pile, so layer them over kitchen scraps. You can also just use them as a green mulch in the yard and put them around tree bases, flower beds and in the garden. I am talking grass here, not weeds that have gone to seed. Think threeinch grass and weeds, not 13-inch high johnson grass.

All You Need Is Time

Composting is a habit: the more you put in the pile, in the correct quantities, the better the compost decomposition. Egg shells take forever, so you will always have them even in the most broken-down compost. If you are looking for large amounts of compost, you need to get started now for next year. You get what you put in. A larger three-container composting bin would be what you want to use. The one-bin compost is more for the urban gardener that may have a couple of chickens who eat some kitchen scraps, but there are enough left for a small compost bin. I have a small, lidded bin in the kitchen and take that out to the outside compost bin once a week. Paper sacks, paper padding in shipped boxes and newspaper are all fodder for the compost heap. In a couple of months, the

bottom of the compost pile starts to get more and more worms, and that is where the real magic happens. Worms are your composting buddies; they do the heavy lifting. So, train those kids and everyone else, to throw all worms into the compost bin. Especially after it rains.

When Is Compost Ready To Use?

Compost is ready when almost decomposed compost is sifted through a one-inch mesh frame. What falls through is good to go. Just chunk the bigger, not so broken-down pieces back into the compost pile. Easy sifter to make: find an old frame without the glass. Old window frames are great for this. You probably have some old wire mesh laying around somewhere or know someone who does. Cut a piece of one-inch wire mesh to fit the frame and staple it to the frame. Now dump some of your compost onto the screen. What falls through is ready to use. Easy Peasy.

I hope some of these composting ideas work for you. If you truly want to be a lazy gardener, I highly recommend composting and compost teas. Some online resources are listed below and of course, Happy Gardening.

oes anyone else feel like they’ve awakened from a hibernation of winter blues and seasonal depression now that it’s warm out? I’ve been cold and sad and grouchy and complaining about the cold for months now, and beautiful weather is finally upon us. 11 months out of the year I am an indoorsy person, but for the next 3 weeks, I will be outdoorsy. Well, outdoorsyish. No matter that these toasty days have reminded me that my body is the shape, texture and color of a marshmallow and that I have exactly zero clothes that look good on me, this weather has got me wanting to act up. And by “act up”, I mean day drink. Is there anything more delightful than sitting on a patio with a fat margarita mid-day? That’s a rhetorical question, because of course the

answer is no. Let me paint a picture for you…it’s the perfect 78 degrees, there’s a slight breeze, Juan from El Patio sits an ice cold, limey, tart marg right in front of your face, your best pal is sitting across from you telling you the most juicy gossip, you don’t have a care in the world, except deciding whether to get queso or guacamole (both, obviously). Life. Is. Good. And you better soak it up, too. Because in just a few short weeks it will be hotter than the surface of the sun. Your bare thighs will start sticking to hard surfaces like Velcro. Your leather car seats that have been baking in the sunlight for hours will sear your flesh right off. You’ll start sweating in places you didn’t even know had sweat glands. And then, the cycle starts all over, with me non-stop complaining about the heat…

MYCHELLE M. HOLLIDAY
60 JULY 2023

It’s been a fast and furious summer of activity in your school district. We have been working diligently to recruit and hire staff, refresh, and renovate our buildings, and are looking at ways to improve our academic outcomes in each of our schools. As I write this article, I have completed my first full week as the “interim” Superintendent with my official term beginning July 1. Our Board of Education and our team of administrators have been hitting the ground running. What a wild first week in this position.

If I can recap the first week. We start each Monday with a cabinet meeting with every Director in our district. This is a great time for me to outline what I’m facing and working on, while also giving each of us an opportunity to hear from each of our departments. In these meetings we discuss a wide array of problems ranging from substitute teacher fill rate to USDA price changes for vegetables and everything in between. This meeting is typically sixty to ninety minutes in length, but it sets the tone for the entire week.

After this first early morning meeting there are two to three follow up meetings with individual administrators about “next steps.” These next steps are then disseminated out for implementation or communication among each of the areas in the district. For example, as we discussed spring test scores we must determine how best to communicate with site

administrators and teachers when they return in the fall. That afternoon I met with our Board of Education Curriculum committee. Our Board meets as committees prior to the official board meeting to dig into the potential items on the upcoming agenda. In this meeting we discuss all issues related to teaching, learning, professional development, and district priorities related to all three areas. We examine data, talk with teachers, and other Directors about what is working or what needs approved. Our board members take these meetings seriously as we work on issues that will directly impact our students and staff.

The following day is two more Board of Education meetings, the Property Committee, and the Finance Committee. In the Property meeting, we discuss all issues related to our district’s infrastructure. This usually has issues related to plant management including at this time of year, HVAC issues, bond projects, bus repair, roof repair, child nutrition work, and mowing! It’s no secret there’s a plethora of construction projects occurring across the community and each of those are reviewed in depth in these meetings. Currently the district is working on Liberty Elementary remodel, baseball and softball stadium improvements, concert hall classrooms, Roosevelt roof replacement, high school bathroom remodel, and the Anderson STEM renovation. Phew! Immediately following this meeting, we convene

in our finance committee where we look over every contract, fundraiser request, budget request, and any other financial matter that may impact our district. Our board expects full transparency and accountability with the expenditure of our funds, and my goal is to ensure that continues.

The remainder of my week involved a plethora of additional meetings. This included reviewing and discussing possible policy enhancements with our High School administration. Meeting to continue planning curriculum, equipment, and furniture needs for our new STEM space. A review of our website enhancements and changes. A discussion about utility lines around the baseball stadium. Meeting with our teachers to discuss possible changes in the upcoming school year. Discussions with our human resources on ways to recruit more people to move to Ponca City and a lengthy meeting with our administration about extracurriculars in our district and ways to improve. Plus, much more!

It’s not slowing down with PC Schools. Each day I truly think we can make decisions that will improve our district and propel us forward. I’m beyond blessed to have this opportunity and I hope we can continue to make you proud of your school district. Please have a safe 4th of July!
