Letter from the Editor

In the “old world” (meaning, for those born in the late 1900s like myself) the word ‘Prompt” could have many meanings. It could be an adjective, describing an action that is quick or done with haste. It could also be a verb or a noun, indicating or encouraging action. Today, thanks to ChatGPT and the rise of Artificial Intelligence, the word “prompt” means typing words into a text field, and pressing a button with an upward-facing arrow, hence “prompting” a response from an artificial computer intelligence.

For example, to demonstrate this exercise, I typed in: “Describe to me what ChatGPT is for someone who may not understand.” And it spit out a clever answer about how it’s a “really cool robot,” and even described itself as, “Google’s chattier, more creative cousin.” It went on to include specifically that, “Google gives you links, but it gives you full answers,” which is honestly a pretty harsh dig at Google. I find it meaningful that ChatGPT never refers to itself as “I” or “me” but only as “it.”

According to a 2024 report by Connecticut State Community College, nearly 40% of U.S. adults between aged between 18 and 64 have used generative AI, with about one-third of users engaging with it daily or multiple times a week. It doesn’t seem possible, but OpenAI, the company behind the most powererful artificial intelligence tool on the market today, launched ChatGPT in November 2022. Two and a half years later, and AI is changing how the world operates more and more with each passing day.

For example, you can take a picture of the inside of your fridge and of your pantry, and upload those images to ChatGPT and prompt it to “Give me ideas of what to make for dinner from the ingredients you see in these photos.” Using those images, it can (within 5-10 seconds) give you several ideas with full recipes and instructions of what to make for dinner. And that’s only a hint of what it can do.

Another example - let’s say you have a 120 page PDF. A huge, complex report that you have neither the time nor the energy to read. If you upload that PDF into ChatGPT (once you have it uploaded, it’s now

trained) and you can then ask it whatever questions you need to know, and it will answer your questions using info from the report. Gone are the days of keyword searching or skimming through huge documents digging for answers. What used to take hours, now takes mere seconds.

It sounds like magic, because it kind of is. AI has unlocked a world of possibilities unknown and unreachable to humans before now. And it’s a little intoxicating, I think. With the power to answer any question, analyze huge amounts of data, and with an AI engine to generate anything our minds can ask for - the question becomes - what about us?

Humans are all learning how to live in a world where AI exists, and we’re all learning it together at the same time. It’s weird, and it’s awkward at times to know when and how it’s appropriate to use. And as helpful as AI is, it’s also forcing us (we, as in, humanity) to take a long hard look at what it means to be human. It’s like when you watch a movie with witches and wizards and you think to yourself, “If they have magical powers, why are they doing their own dishes?” And you think, “If I had magic, I would never clean anything ever again!” Well, we all have a little of that magical ability now. I have more questions than answers right now with AI, but I think it’s important that we have these conversations as we work through these technological innovations. We are still in the very early stages of what AI is capable of, and the more we can wrap our brains around how AI works, and what it should and should not be used for, the better off we will all be.

In that magical world of make believe – I would like to think some witches and wizards do their own dishes, because they like the feeling of the warm soapy water on their hands, and they like the contentment it gives them when all the dishes are finally clean, knowing that they did them, with their own two hands.

Author Annie Vanhoose Brings a Voice to Lydie Marland Story by Marlys Cervantes | Staff Writer

Have you ever had a bit of history, a story, that just would not leave your mind? That is exactly what happened for Annie Vanhoose in regard to historical figure Lydie Marland.

Annie was born in Ponca City but moved to Nashville with her family when she was two.

However, she still spent time visiting the area due to extended family who lived in Ponca City and Blackwell. After 20 years in Nashville, Annie moved back to Ponca City in 2017 to be closer to her grandparents, and soon her parents restarted their family business, Bargain Barn. Her grandfather, David Hall, had founded the business, the local TV station and worked as a reporter. He told his granddaughter about trying to interview Lydie Marland in her later years, and Annie’s imagination was sparked.

After a visit to Marland Mansion, her interest was piqued even more, and she wrote about the Marlands in college creative writing classes.

Vanhoose says, “That’s really where The Black Gold Heiress was born, in those early impressions and wondering what it must have been like.”

Annie would work on the ideas for this novel over time, but it was a while before it came to fruition. She moved to Colorado during the pandemic, and that’s where she met her husband, Justin.

It was during this time in Colorado that she wrote two children’s books, Gus Gets a Human and Prosperity Lane, under the pseudonym Payden Hall. Vanhoose says Prosperity Lane, published in September 2020, is a “middle-grade novella about 10-year-old Temperance Brown who spends the summer with her eccentric Aunt Lavendar on a street where flowers—and people—are allowed to bloom in their own time.”

Her other children’s book Gus Gets a Human is a “sweet, funny story written from the perspective of a clumsy Bernese Mountain Dog puppy waiting for his forever family.”

Vanhoose’s family raised this type of dog for a time, and the story’s message is “how to embrace our differences and what it feels like to belong,” she says. Published in July 2021, it can be found in the Bookstore at Lulu.com.

Themes about differences, and yet belonging, emerge from her writing, and Annie felt a sense of belonging in Ponca City, remembering the many highlights it has to offer a person and family. Favorite memories were events

like Oktoberfest at Marland Mansion and walking in Cann Gardens. Even window displays on Grand Avenue during the holidays is a special memory.

However, her fondest memories are helping run the Bargain Barn on weekends with her parents.

Hosted out of the Robin Hood Flour Mill, Annie had fun helping run the live shows and meeting Ponca City residents.

Although she began to write the novel while living here in Ponca City, it wasn’t completed until sometime after she’d moved away. Vanhoose says, “The emotional blueprint had been in my mind for years.” The story stayed with her, and she desired to write about this intriguing and mysterious legacy from Lydie’s voice rather than E.W.’s. She wanted Lydie to be remembered as herself and not

The Mission

Feeding Bodies & Souls Story by Chelsea McConnell | Staff Writer

Most people look at their retirement years as a time of rest and relaxation. Hazel Riggs was not most people. Neither is her son Gary Jackson. The Mission was founded by Hazel and Mike Riggs in February 1992. Hazel and her husband Mike owned their own business. When they decided to retire, they sold their business.

Once everything was settled, they had a bit of money left over. It was Hazel’s dream to do something to nourish people physically and spiritually. That is how The Mission got started.

When Hazel first got things going, The Mission was a place for folks to gather weekday mornings for coffee, donuts, a prayer if needed, music and fellowship. Hazel went to seminary and was an ordained minister.

Instead of preaching from a pulpit, she used her gifts to show the Lord’s love to those she served at The Mission.

Around the time the new building was ready, Hazel was looking to truly retire and knew she needed to find her replacement. She had been training her daughter, but she sadly passed away unexpectedly. Coincidentally, Gary had recently taken an early retirement due to an injury, so he had free time and agreed to come volunteer at The Mission.

Gary began helping out on Wednesday each week with another volunteer. He said within a few months he knew he was where he was meant to be. “It just was right. I get so much satisfaction out of helping people. I’ve been doing it for a long time. I know all these people that come in here, every one of them. I treat them like they’re family.” Gary says In 2002, the original Hazel Riggs his mom taught him that building burned down, they do this work from a place and the community came of faith and love, and Gary has together to build The Mission certainly carried on this tradition. as we know it today. The rebuild was a big undertaking for Hazel. She was able to

Today things look a little different at The Mission. They went from serving breakfast and lunch to just serving lunch. During the COVID-19 pandemic they began packaging meals in to-go containers, and they have kept that routine. It requires fewer volunteers and seems to work well for those who are coming to get food also.

The Mission provides meals to the hungry Tuesday through Friday from noon to one o’clock. They have a set number they make, but always keep reserve items on hand in case more come through in that time. There used to be a sort of ebb and flow to the days in the month and Gary could somewhat predict how many would come through the door, but not anymore. Lately, numbers vary from day to day without much rhyme or reason, so the crew just tries to be prepared for whatever comes at them.

Gary says six volunteers is the sweet spot. It takes three in the kitchen and three out front to run things. Gary works in the kitchen and his wife, who everyone affectionately calls “Miss June,” works out front. Gary plans and cooks all the meals himself. He has others who help him in the kitchen. They always try to have at least 60 meals ready when they open the doors at noon and go from there depending on where the hour takes them.

Gary has lovely things to say about the folks that volunteer and pour their hearts and souls into making The Mission successful. He has a handful of tried-andtrue volunteers who show up whenever they Gary and June Jackson can and some of them have been volunteering at The Mission for more than 10 years. They also work with a few local churches, First Baptist Church and Eastern Heights, who provide volunteers and those folks have also been a huge help as well. Over the years so many folks have made a huge impact that there are just too many to count.

Gary is aware he is getting older but says he’s not ready to quit his work at The Mission any time soon. He isn’t sure what will come next for the organization but is hopeful the right person or group will come along to take over when needed.

On top of providing a meal, The Mission also keeps a small selection of donated clothing and shoes that folks can take if needed.

The Mission works with a Church in another community that donates bread items, and those are set out for people to take as well. Everyone is welcome at The Mission, and there is never a charge to eat. Any donated items The Mission receives they pass on directly to those they serve.

Shoe and clothing donations can be dropped off Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. They go through clothing donations quickly and volunteers put more out each day.

These donations are a welcome gift as the opening of big box donation stores have really hurt the donations they are receiving.

A few years ago, Gary was approached by

Keller Williams. The company offered to host a golf tournament on behalf of The Mission and this has been a huge help to the organization. Every year Keller Williams employees participate in what they call “Red Day,” which is a day of service where the KW team steps away from the business to pour into their communities.

Gary said the money they’ve raised has been a huge blessing and reports the KW team says they plan to host the golf tournament again next year and have ideas to make it even bigger and better than this year’s event.

The Mission is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Gary reports that the cost to run things continues to rise. They are incredibly grateful for their consistent donors who send donations monthly and/or annually. These donors make running The Mission possible.

Northern Oklahoma Youth Services Does It All Story by Chelsea McConnell | Staff Writer

Northern Oklahoma Youth Services (NOYS) is most widely known as our area’s temporary youth shelter, but the organization does so much more than that.

NOYS was incorporated in 1971 and has been providing a youth shelter and preventative programs to our area for over 50 years. Their mission is “to empower and advocate for children, adolescents and families at-risk in North Central Oklahoma through home, agency and school-based programs offering temporary shelter for children and adolescents, integrated behavioral health outpatient counseling, prevention and intervention services.” NOYS serves Kay, Noble, (part of) Osage and Pawnee counties. There are no fees for any of the services offered by Northern Oklahoma Youth Services.

The Emergency Youth Shelter is one of the most important components of the work done at NOYS. The shelter is a 12-bed facility located at 2203 N. Ash Street in Ponca City.

NOYS Executive Director James Carter says the shelter hosts an average of 7-8 kids per day. The shelter will accept youths ages 7-17, but James says they are mostly housing

teens. The average length of stay is around three weeks, though the shelter sees a lot of kids who are only there for a few days.

While the shelter primarily houses runaway and homeless youth populations, there is a myriad of reasons why a young person might seek shelter. It can be used as a temporary cooling-off location for teens who are going through a rough patch with their families. In this situation, NOYS staff can make moves to help prevent potentially violent behavior or even a future runaway. The shelter also occasionally helps youth in need who are traveling through our area for one reason or another. Staff work around the clock, are specially trained and have all gone through extensive background checks. Shelter staff are certified in CPR and managing aggressive behavior. The shelter is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Counseling is also a big component of the work happening at NOYS. It is one of the ways they can help youth and their families gain the skills needed to interact well as a family unit. Short-term and long-term counseling is available.

All NOYS counselors have a master’s degree &/or extensive experience and are supervised by a Licensed Professional Counselor. NOYS counselors primarily use the Cognitive Behavioral Model for their services, as literature supports this model being best for the type of services they are offering.

According to the American Psychological Association, The Cognitive Behavioral Model of therapy proposes that one’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors are interconnected and influence each other.

It suggests that by changing negative or unhelpful thought patterns, individuals can improve their emotional and behavioral responses.

NOYS also offers a wide range of educational services. Educational services can stop problems before they start and head off potential issues between youths and their families. NOYS offers school-based services that educate children in topics such as bullying, substance abuse, peer pressure and the dangers of vaping. They also offer programs regarding juvenile delinquency prevention and child abuse prevention.

NOYS also acts as a Family Resource Center (FRC). Through the FRC, they offer a free program called Parents as Teachers to expectant caregivers and families with children ages 0 to kindergarten. This service offers families home visits, video visits or phone visits where an educator works with them to help them make the best parenting decisions. This is ideal for new and first-time parents. Parents as Teachers is a nationally accredited curriculum. It focuses on parentchild interaction, development-centered parenting, developmental screenings and family well-being. Through this program, they can bring fun activities into your home like a reading hour for kids with an entertaining book that teaches an important life lesson.

Through NOYS’ participation as an FRC, they also have a grant that helps them offer more concrete support to families with young children. To this end. NOYS maintains a

supply closet with items like diapers, wipes, formula, household cleaning supplies, child locks and other similar items.

NOYS is a 501(c)(3) governed by a local Board of Directors. If you have a passion for helping the youth in our community, the NOYS Board is a great place to give back.

The Board is made up of local volunteers and meets monthly. Board members review relevant business matters at meetings and assist with fundraising, community awareness and education activities.

For many of their program, NOYS gets referrals from various partner agencies like DHS, Child Welfare, Juvenile Affairs, the local municipal court and local school systems. They also receive referrals from private individuals. If you or someone you know could use the services NOYS offers, feel free to reach out to them.

Director James Carter says, “It’s a wonderful thing if you haven’t had to use our services, but it is critical and important to those that do. If you have a way to give back or support NOYS, it would be a great thing.”

All NOYS services are provided at no cost to clients and their families.

NOYS staff work hard to obtain grants and contracts to help cover services.

They are also very grateful to the community partners that help fund their efforts: United Way of North Central Oklahoma, United Way of Blackwell, Perry United Fund and Newkirk Community Chest.

“The Journey Part 3” :

Anchored in Love In November 2024, the weight of unmet expectation arrived like a quiet, unwelcome guest. After weeks of hopeful anticipation, two embryos that had been carefully implanted failed to take root. The details of how this played out were fully shared in July’s article. Ashley sat silent in the kitchen, numb and unable to cry, and I sat in my truck and drank my Mr. Ponca City beer as tears fell silently. I was a bit shocked as I felt the wetness on my cheek, because I don’t cry. The silence that followed that realization wasn’t just a momentary period or a medical setback; it echoed into every corner of our home, our hearts and the rhythm of family life.

The timing couldn’t have been more bittersweet.

Ashley had quietly dreamed of sharing the news of a pregnancy with me for my birthday that November.

For weeks, I (Ashley) imagined wrapping a small box, inside of which would sit a baby-themed onesie or a +pregnancy test with a pink bow on it, or something symbolic and joyful to mark what I hoped would be a new chapter. But instead of sharing that joy for Relo’s birthday, we instead carried on as if nothing had happened. Again, wearing a mask, presenting as if everything was great, even though it wasn’t. There is strength in that, in handling business regardless of trials, but there is also strength in vulnerability and

22 AUGUST 2025

being honest about what is happening and what feelings are coming up, especially with our son, Peyton. Instead of authenticity, we were on autopilot and celebrated like we normally would, or tried to anyway! Privately, and silently, I believe we both shed tears and prayed and ached for what could have been. The guilt I carried from not being able to give him that moment compounded the emotional toll. I knew it wasn’t my fault, but it still felt personal.

Just weeks later came Thanksgiving, a time meant for gratitude, warmth and the gathering of loved ones. On the surface, everything looked the same because there were food, family and best friends. We were, and are by all outward measures, blessed; however, under the surface, a quiet grief still lingered. We knew we had so much to be thankful for—our health, our home, our son, our community, but the sting of disappointment dulled the sparkle of the season. There was conviction in that realization: gratitude and sorrow coexisting; sometimes the most authentic prayers come through tears, not words. How could we be sad and grateful at the same time? How could we be sad at all considering our every need that has always been met? The conviction I (Relo)

felt was heavy. I know what I have been saved from, and carried through, by God alone. I mean the creator of the entire universe cares for me ... a speck in the grand scheme of things, but I was valuable and loved. How humbling. Why am I sad when I have everything to be thankful for, I thought? One Saturday at Saturday morning prayer, I was reminded that my feelings are valid and it’s OK and normal to be disappointed. I was reminded that early on in life, I learned that hardships occur in order to inspire us, or me, to chase God harder and more fiercely, that suffering could be viewed as a way for God to refine my character and to teach me to trust Him, and draw me closer to Him. And again, it was OK to be disappointed, “It’s OK not to be OK.”

By December, we wanted to try again.

The desire hadn’t faded; it had deepened.

But circumstances seemed to resist.

Weather delays, clinic closures and travel complications all became unavoidable roadblocks. Each time we tried to reschedule, something interfered. It was as if every sign was pointing to “not yet,” a divine pause we didn’t understand but couldn’t ignore. Our 14-year-old son began to unravel in ways we hadn’t fully expected. The previous year, he had shown subtle signs of insecurity, pulling away at times, being unusually quiet or defiant, and those behaviors were escalating. When January rolled around and he caught a cold just before his birthday, he spent most of the day in bed. He barely touched his cake … no sparkle, no joy, just fevers and coughs! We felt awful for him and helpless and just wanted him to feel better.

His sadness wasn’t just about feeling sick.

He had attached deep hopes to the idea of Ashley being pregnant. He had believed a new baby would somehow fill in the gaps, would make things more secure, more certain. He came with us in November to implant our embryos and began telling everyone, “I’m finally going to have siblings.”

He told his favorite teacher Ms. Tane Kester and even showed her pictures of the embryos, and she was the first he told when things didn’t work out too! What we realized later was that the IVF process had stirred something painful in him. Despite our reassurances and the years of unconditional love, a subtle fear had taken root: that he might not be “enough.”

That a biological child would change things. And when the embryos didn’t implant, he internalized the loss. Somehow, heartbreakingly, he blamed himself.

In hindsight, it made sense. The emotional rollercoaster of fertility treatments is exhausting for any couple, but for a child

watching from the sidelines, especially one adopted, the complexity is immense. His behavior changes, his sadness, even his physical illness were his own cries for stability in a season that felt unpredictable. The holidays passed with a kind of melancholy undertone. Thanksgiving didn’t feel like Thanksgiving. Christmas lacked its usual sparkle. Peyton and Relo’s birthdays came and went like a shadow. It was as if the entire household was holding our breath, unsure what the next step was or when it would come.

Amid all of this, Relo, devoted and steady, did what he knew to do: he pressed in. He began rising early each morning to read his Bible, not out of ritual, but out of desperation to hear from God. His prayers intensified for wisdom, for healing in our son, for clarity in his leadership, for me, not just for a baby. He began meeting weekly with pastor Flint Funkhouser. What started as a conversation about how to support our son through this emotional transition turned into a life-changing season of discipleship.

grief, began to be reassembled with grace. By March, we sensed that the time was near not because circumstances had changed, but because our hearts had. We no longer approached IVF with a grasping need to fill a void. We approached it from a place of peace. From the beginning, our identity as a family had been rooted not in biology, but in calling. We knew our son felt safe again, and we knew God was with us whether a pregnancy occurred or not.

In April 2025, with that peace anchoring us, we implanted two more embryos, and this time, the embryos implantations stuck and the news came with joy, tempered by caution. We knew all too well the fragility of hope. We told no one at first, not because we lacked faith, but because we wanted to protect what was sacred and savor this moment we had waited 14 years to share.

guidance and pick his brain about what The Word says about hardships, leading a family, resilience and effective parenting, and it turned into an every Monday morning meeting of them sharing coffee, life, support, prayers and digging in the Word. Relo didn’t know it at the time, but it was never about finding the perfect parenting strategy. It was about becoming the kind of man God was calling him to be—spiritually grounded, emotionally aware and fully surrendered. Flint guided him not with formulas but with Scripture, prayer, truth and brotherhood.

Their Monday morning meetings were something Relo looked forward to. I could tell because he was early. If you know Relo at all, you know he doesn’t believe in time. He often says, “Time is a man-made construct.” The guidance, prayer and accountability he received in those early hours bled into the rest of his week and bled into our home.

That spiritual growth didn’t go unnoticed.

His leadership at home became quieter, yet stronger. He didn’t just read from The Word, he studied it and tried to be intentional with applying it. And slowly, that posture began to shift the dynamics of our household. Yes,

Peyton still occasionally crashed out, but the emotional upsets became less intense and less frequent. Yes, Relo still struggles with cuss words and yes, I still struggle with some things as well (my dog thinks I’m perfect, though), but the life change is developing in each of us daily (sanctification) and is undeniable.

Together, we reevaluated everything.

We had earned a reputation as helpers, partially due to our profession, and due to our decision to be youth mentors, church youth group leaders, board members and volunteers. Our calendars were always full. But this season required a different kind of service, a service to each other and to our son. We began saying “no” to social obligations, board invitations and community events. We reduced our client loads when possible and stopped operating from burnout.

When this happened, something beautiful began. I’d like to say that meals were slower, but they continued to be fast.

Conversations grew deeper and our son laughed more. There was space to breathe and space to heal. We stopped trying to prove we could “do it all” and instead started practicing presence. In doing so, our family, once fractured by

For several weeks, everything looked strong. But around the 5 1/2-week mark, a series of stressful events, emotional strain, travel fatigue and a minor medical scare led to the loss of one of the embryos.

A heartbeat that once flickered strong was suddenly gone. It was a moment of piercing grief, but also clarity. We allowed ourselves to mourn, but we did not spiral.

This time, we knew how to anchor. The remaining embryo continued to grow, thriving against the odds and by week 6 1/2, the remaining baby’s heartbeat continued to be strong. Each doctor’s appointment came with cautious relief and more instructions for Ashley to take things easy. Our son began asking questions about the baby and although we agreed as a family not to share our good news just yet, he couldn’t wait to share the news with the sweet, older praying members of our church. The ones who pray with him, the ones he can hug when he is uneasy about something, the ones that correct him with a stern voice and tap on the rear. Sweet and all, but you know what all that means? News travelled quickly! Ashley’s ability to make an official announcement was almost completely taken because everyone was so excited for us! For Peyton, the shift was visible, tangible. He no longer saw the baby as a replacement, but as a gift to be shared.

What was once uncertainty became anticipation and as summer pressed on, Ashley entered her second trimester. In August 2025, she is FIVE months pregnant with a healthy baby due in December.

Nearly a year after our initial attempt, we are preparing for a new life.

This is more than just a story about infertility. It’s a story of restoration, of faith deepened through waiting, of a family reanchored through prayer, of a son reclaimed through love. The growth that took place wasn’t, or isn’t, measured in fetal size or test results, it is measured in spiritual maturity, emotional healing and relational connection. It’s seen in the way Relo prays with authority. It is evident in the way Ashley now rests without guilt.

It shows in Peyton’s peace, his laughter and his ability to say, “I can’t wait to meet the baby!”

Looking back, we no longer question the delay. We see how every closed door had opened a deeper well of faith. Every “not yet” had drawn us closer to God, to one another and to our son.

Our journey through IVF was not just about adding a child, it was

With over a century of serving this community, Ponca City News continues to provide the local area news in a changing world.

Originally founded in 1893, its current Director of Operations Nick Theodoran, explains that even though readership for print media is down from even 20 years ago, the readers who continue to read are dedicated.

Tom Muchmore, publisher of Ponca City News from 1997 to 2018 and who was presented with Ponca City’s Outstanding Citizen award in 2001 and inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2013, was quoted in the article as saying, “It is a bittersweet time for our family to end our work at Ponca City News. It has been a labor of love we have for the newspaper and community which we have taken seriously and with devotion. We are excited to see new owners who bring experience, enthusiasm and new ideas.” Both the Muchmores and the new owners looked toward it remaining a vital part of the local community.

According to Theodoran, that’s exactly why the media group secures local papers: “So towns can keep their local news. This is where people can see what’s happening locally.”

According to Staff Writer Calley Lamar, who came here from a position at the newspaper in Okeene, Oklahoma, his spotlights on education and the Ponca City Area Chamber led to many contacts for which he is still thankful. Lamar says the greatest benefit of being a writer for Ponca City News is all the people he meets and being able to attend so many events. When asked about one of his favorites, he mentions his twoday experience with Jeff Denton who was with Ponca City Public Schools and who would say he had “the largest restaurant in the county.” Lamar traveled between schools and such during the in-depth time spent with Denton for the article. Lamar is one of the few local writers for the paper and has served in numerous areas of the process since he came to Ponca City.

Although there are fewer numbers on the staff at Ponca City News

now, much of that is due to the work that can be done digitally, remotely and not needing the many who worked in delivery in previous years. Many of us remember fondly our parents paying their newspaper boy in cash at the door. However, even most of us who still had the paper delivered at home when they grew up, moved to the ease of payment online.

One of the most significant and beneficial aspects of the sale, which Theodoran credits to Muchmore, is his investment in a nice, large printer.

Muchmore’s vision with this purchase has led to 25 different papers—from Kansas,

Texas and Oklahoma—being printed right here in Ponca City.

However, with all these changes, what Theodoran and his apt crew at Ponca City News can still point to with pride is the local news coverage. Both Theodoran and Lamar stress that front-page coverage and more is local, while state and national news is in the interior of the paper.

Local coverage is what was important to the previous owners, and it is what continues to be the strength of this newspaper today. PCM

Instructor Meets Former Mavs Players At Ohio Summer League Game Story by Scott Cloud | Director of Public Information, NOC | Contributing Writer Coincidence of all coincidences.

Northern Oklahoma College Stillwater Science Instructor Chris Storm is a huge baseball fan, specifically of college and college summer leagues.

This summer, while attending an academic conference in Cleveland, Ohio, Storm took an opportunity to drive to eastern Ohio to see the Mahoning Valley Scrappers play the State College Spikes (MLB Draft League).

Storm was hoping to meet former NOC Tonkawa Maverick pitcher Kamden Edge. Edge, who will pitch for Austin Peay University next year, was a student in an online course Storm taught.

NOC serves nearly 3,100 students through the home campus in Tonkawa, branch in Enid and NOC/OSU Gateway Program in Stillwater. Of these students, about 80% receive financial aid and/or scholarships. Seventy-five percent of NOC students complete their degrees with zero debt.

The college is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and offers associate degrees in three general areas: Arts, Science and Applied Science; the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs; and the Accreditation Commission for Education and Nursing.

“I mistakenly looked at the wrong roster and went to the Spikes’ (visiting team) dugout, hoping to meet Edge,” Storm said. “Between innings I went to the Spikes’ dugout and asked if they could let #34 (Edge) know that one of his teachers from NOC was here and would love to say hello.”

Storm, though, was in for quite a surprise.

“He came out, we gave each other a fist bump, and I asked him, “Are you Kamden Edge? I was your Earth Science teacher online,” Storm said. “He said he was not Kamden Edge, but did go to NOC Tonkawa, and that Kamden Edge is on the other team (Scrappers).”

Storm accidentally met Landen Johnson, a 2024 NOC Tonkawa Maverick who is a first baseman for High Point (NC) University.

“It then started raining and they rolled out the tarp, so I asked the Scrappers if Kamden Edge was there,” Storm said. “He came to visit me from the bullpen (and was very pleasant). Turns out that #34 on both teams went to NOC. Is that crazy or what?”

Northern Oklahoma College, the state’s first public two-year community college, is a multicampus, land-grant institution that provides high-quality, accessible and affordable educational opportunities and services.

CRA – CONOCOPHILLIPS RETIREES ASSOCIATION

Fostering Community Among Local Retirees Story by Chelsea McConnell | Staff Writer

The ConocoPhillips Retirees Association, CRA for short, is more than just a network of retirees. They are a vibrant group of citizens who are continuing to do good in our community after their years of dedication and service to one of our town’s major employers. Through CRA, they are giving back while also creating a lively atmosphere of camaraderie that will help them continue to flourish as they grow more experienced with time.

The CRA was founded in April 1992 “with a mission to provide a support network for retirees and a communication link back to the parent company Conoco, [which] has expanded to include Phillips 66 and ConocoPhillips retirees since the ‘Merger of Equals’ in 2002 between Conoco and Phillips 66.” The group has three main goals they are trying to support. They plan social and volunteer events to get members out into the community.

They share information they believe is relevant to retirees and their significant others, and they provide information and assistance to members on navigating Social Security and company retiree benefits.

The CRA has an active social calendar. Board members meet once a month for regular Board business. The group plays Bunco on the second Monday of every month at the Senior Center from 1-4 p.m. This is a

relaxed event, no experience is required, and attendees are promised a good time.

The Board plans interesting and different quarterly events where they visit local attractions like the Marland Mansion, Conoco Museum, and Pioneer Woman Museum, for example. These events are meant to be an engaging way to keep retirees connected to our community. The Board also facilitates &/or participates in a handful of annual events throughout the year that members look forward to attending.

They host a Spring Fling in the spring of each year. This lunch event includes social time and bingo.

They host a Refinery Management Lunch in August each year (previously this event was a breakfast but is transitioning to a lunch event this year.) This is an important event to the retirees and current Phillips staff alike. At this event, retirees are brought up to date on various changes

made within the company over the past year. Phillips 66 sees the importance of sharing their continued hard work, progress, and commitment to advancing the company with those who helped build its foundation.

Each fall the CRA hosts its annual meeting. At this informational meeting, Board members for the upcoming year are announced and voted into office.

Information is also shared relevant to retirees such as insurance updates and benefit changes.

Current events and volunteer opportunities are discussed as well. The CRA hosts an annual Christmas Party every December.

This is one of their bigger events with many retirees coming back to Ponca City to attend. This is an evening of fun, food, and fellowship that allows past employees to catch up with each other. Retirees are given an update by the Refinery Manager and board members are recognized for their service.

Phillips 66 is a Partner in Education (PIE)

through the Chamber’s PIE Program with Garfield Elementary School. Each year, the CRA adopts Garfield’s Kindergartners.

Retirees volunteer on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. as part of this program. Darcey Austin, Kindergarten Teacher at Garfield has this to say about the CRA and their contribution. “The retirees are wonderful.

They come once a week on Tuesdays for 30 minutes and work with our Kindergarten students on alphabet recognition and sight word recognition. They do a Christmas Party, Valentine’s party and end-ofyear party with our kids. They also make a donation to our Kindergarten class to buy each child a nice gift bag with things like Play-Doh, blankets, a small toy, mittens, hats, etc. I can’t say enough good things about the impact they have at Garfield. We love them.” Many of the Retirees also participate in Book Buddies with Garfield Elementary. Being a Book Buddy is a commitment to read with a Garfield student each week. Many of the volunteers spend a little extra time before their Tuesday commitment reading with a child. The time they spend volunteering

at Garfield is a gift to our students. More volunteers are always welcome.

CRA is open to both retirees and their spouses, this includes anyone who worked for any of the three heritage companies (Conoco, ConocoPhillips, and Phillips 66). If you have been involved with CRA in the past but have lost contact with the organization, you are encouraged to update your contact information with the group on their website, as some contact info was lost during recent technology changes. You can also sign up to become a member online. Membership is free, and the social benefits are an added bonus.

Retirees can also become members of the PCSEA as a part of their CRA membership. The PCSEA is the Ponca City Site Employees Association. CRA members and their families, children and grandchildren, are invited to participate in all PCSEA activities. PCSEA hosts bingo on the third Saturday of the month during the fall and winter months at 6:30 in the Atrium Cafeteria. They also host other fun family events throughout the year like the Ponca City Refinery Family Fun Day held each summer.

In October 2023, my life changed forever when I lost my daughter, Jolene Rose. JoJo, as we called her, was my everything. Born with physical disabilities, she taught me unconditional love, strength and resilience. Her passing left me shattered, but self-care became my lifeline. It helped me rebuild, heal and honor her memory. Now, through this column, I’m sharing my journey and tools to help others care for themselves, no matter what life throws their way. Self-care isn’t selfish – it’s survival, and it’s how we thrive.

to be happy and celebrating, but I’ve learned that joy and grief can coexist.

Last year, I spent my birthday feeling everything so deeply—the pain, the love, the gratitude and the ache of loss.

And you know what? That’s OK.

After JoJo passed, there were days when brushing my hair felt impossible.

Days when the only thing I could do was sit in silence and let myself grieve.

Healing is messy. It’s not linear, and it sure as hell isn’t always pretty.

I’ve learned to embrace the mess. It’s part of what makes me who I am today.

And if you’re in the thick of it, know you’re not alone. Some days, self-care means showing up for yourself in the mess, and that’s more than enough. The beauty in healing is that even when it’s messy, it’s still progress.

But here’s the thing: giving yourself permission to be a wreck is part of the process. It’s OK to not be OK. It’s OK to acknowledge that some days just surviving is an act of courage.

Updated flower beds with gorgeous flowers and plants? Gross.

More parking spaces on Grand? Disgusting.

Taking away a whole dang lane?! That’s where I draw the line. I understand that people with engineering degrees and decades of experience in traffic engineering probably put months, maybe years, into this change and likely took into consideration things like reduced collisions, traffic calming, improved pedestrian safety and more, but I don’t care, it just doesn’t feel like downtown unless you’re scared you’re going to knock off your side mirror on a parked truck sticking halfway into your lane. You might be thinking to yourself,

“But Rachel, do these changes affect your life in any way, shape or form?” And the answer is no, but that is neither here nor there, let’s stay on topic. I know this lane removal thing was done on South Avenue like a decade ago and everything turned out to be fine and didn’t interfere with my life in any aspect, but how will “they” know I’m mad at “them” about this if I don’t gripe about it on a Community Watch page? (I don’t know who “they” are; I’m guessing some mythical imaginary people in the Facebook universe who listen to all our gripes and try to make all of our Community Watch dreams and wish lists come true.

Speaking of, how will we get a Golden Corral to come to town, especially if we just keep taking lanes away, all willy nilly?) Let’s get back to Grand Avenue—I know that the weeds in my flower beds are taller than my 5-year-old child; I’ve never planted a single thing in my entire

life; and I can’t even keep a plastic houseplant alive, but I have very strong opinions about the flowers they’re putting in the new beds, which is again, something that affects my life greatly.

The additional parking? I know a few months ago we were griping about needing more parking on Grand but, friends, I think pivoting to griping about the additional parking they added was a good move; let’s keep that up.

Anyways, I’m so worked up over all of this, I’m thinking of organizing a rally. We can all meet on Grand Avenue (since there will be enough parking now), we can visit a few stores, support some small businesses, enjoy the cool new strung lights, bask in the knowledge that we live in a city that recognizes the importance of a vibrant downtown district, and then stop and smell the flowers when we’re done. Plus, since I am trying to be as dairy-free as possible, I get products that are coconut-based, and those are coming from much further distances. Supporting Classrooms, Students and Educators Every Step of the Way As summer winds down and classrooms begin to buzz with new energy, the Ponca City Chamber’s Education & Workforce Committee steps into action, lending heart, hands and resources to help our schools start strong. August is one of the busiest and most meaningful months for the committee, packed with programs that directly support students and celebrate the educators who guide them.

One of our favorite traditions each August is the New Teacher Luncheon, held during Ponca City Public Schools’ New Teacher Orientation. This annual event, hosted at the beautiful Ponca City Country Club, is a grand community welcome. It’s our way of showing new educators that Ponca City is behind them from day one. With help from generous sponsors like American Roofing, which is providing 40 meals this year, we make sure every new teacher feels appreciated and supported. Want to be part of this warm welcome?

While we’re celebrating new teachers, we’re also making sure students have the tools they need to succeed. Our Stuff the Bus event, happening Saturday, Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Walmart, is a true community effort. A real school bus is parked outside, and the goal is simple: fill it to the brim with school supplies for local kids. Each backpack, notebook and pack of crayons makes a difference, and every year our

community shows up in full force.

Another vital piece of back-to-school support is our Partners in Education (PIE) Program, which has been connecting schools with local businesses and organizations for over 30 years. PIE Partners are matched with schools and commit to ongoing involvement through volunteering, mentoring and providing resources throughout the year. There’s no other program like it in the state, and it’s one of the most rewarding ways to get involved in education. Our PIE Partner KickOff event is in September, and now is the perfect time to join in.

Educational Partnerships Strengthen the University Center

Story by Tim Williams CEO, University Center at Ponca City / Contributing Writer No person or organization is fully selfsufficient. In fact, most organizations are stronger because they partner with others to fill gaps they have in resources or expertise.

By design, University Center at Ponca City is dependent on partnerships with Oklahoma’s colleges and universities. To meet the higher education needs of the people of Ponca City and northern Oklahoma, the University Center enjoys robust partnerships with Northern Oklahoma College (NOC) and Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU).

Program and Degree Options.

Through our partner schools, students can pursue associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

In addition, qualifying high school students may take concurrent classes in order to get a head start on college degrees. Most programs and degrees offered

by NOC and NWOSU can be obtained through the University Center. Associate and bachelor’s programs include accounting, arts and sciences, behavioral science, business, computer science, criminal justice, education, nursing, pre-engineering, process technology, psychology and sociology.

Master’s programs include curriculum and instruction, educational leadership, counseling psychology, licensed professional counseling, reading specialist and school

Course Delivery.

The instructional delivery models of NOC and NWOSU set the stage for successful partnerships with the UC. Both NOC and NWOSU are multicampus institutions.

NOC’s main campus is in Tonkawa, but they also have campuses in Stillwater and Enid. NWOSU’s main campus is in Alva, with additional sites in Enid and Woodward.

Let’s say an NOC math instructor teaches a class at the Tonkawa campus. The class has students in the classroom in Tonkawa but may also be connected with classrooms at the Stillwater campus, the Enid campus and the University Center, utilizing the latest Zoom technology.

The technology available at all of the sites, including the UC, makes it possible for instructors to teach from, and connect to, any site.

On-site Presence.

The COVID-19 pandemic taught us the value of being physically present and human touch.

NOC and NWOSU understand this and work hard to include an in-person dimension to the college experience for students at the UC. The best example of this is NWOSU’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. NWOSU nursing instructor Sarah Martin offices and teaches at the University Center. She teaches classes from the UC, supervises local clinicals and

leads on-site labs. The nursing department has developed a fully-equipped lab at the UC to eliminate the need for nursing students to travel to other sites on lab days.

This fall at least one NOC concurrent class will enjoy an on-site instructor for the full semester. Instructors from our partner schools frequently visit the UC to teach classes and conference with students. Both schools regularly send representatives to the UC for events, such as enrollment nights, scholarship announcements and graduation receptions.

The resources available through the University Center’s partnerships with NOC and NWOSU are constantly growing, expanding and adapting to meet the needs of our students. Let us know how we can help you reach your educational goals.

Be encouraged, you are going to get through this. I know a cancer diagnosis is terrifying and you cannot see beyond the next moments of uncertainty, but all you can take is one step at a time anyway, so start with the next one. Pain and joy can be mutually exclusive in the space you are about to navigate.

You will set a single goal for yourself in the beginning, and you will achieve it. Watching Braden graduate high school will be the capstone to this long fight ahead of me, and seeing him walk that stage will be worth everything - though you will set and achieve many other goals as well.

The scary world of oncology will become as familiar as your own name. Life-altering decisions will give way to second-guessing every one of them, but give yourself some grace. You will make the best choice for you with the information you have at the time. There is no right way to fight this battle, only guidelines and hope. It will be brutal and exhausting, but you will also find beauty and strength in the experience.

The personal relationships you gain through this time will be worth every bad

treatment day, additional surgery and followup scan full of anxiety. The brave women who will walk beside you, lift you up with their own stories and prayers and encourage you to share with others, will become your tribe. You will celebrate life with them, making memories at retreats, on the dance floor of fundraisers, and in the quiet moments of conversations about fears and emotions only they understand. A few of them will win their battle with cancer by stepping into eternity, and the rest of you will mourn together. Those losses will wreck you, and you will wonder why it was them and not you. Then, you will remember your promise to each of them at the end that you would continue their legacy—they would not be forgotten. You will pull yourself out of the grief and answer your calling once again.

The mission of connecting with other survivors and a passion for enhancing access and resources in rural healthcare will be ignited. There will be advancements in medicine, genetic testing and surgical techniques that are barely on the radar right now. The professional connections you make, your desire for knowledge and research and your personal experience will help new survivors and their families navigate their journeys in a healthier way. Public speaking, leading community groups and advocacy are in your future, and it will stretch every boundary of your comfort zone. You will want to quit this calling,

just like you wanted to quit during the harshest parts of your treatment, but you will remember your “why” and continue moving forward.

Side effects of surgery and radiation will physically limit your lifelong love of putting pen to paper to process what is happening to you and around you. It will move to a digital format, and you will struggle with the difference at first, but you will write again. A local leader and business owner with a heart for her community will take a chance on your story and offer you a 12-month series in her magazine. Divine intervention will have the final article released days after you celebrate 10 years since diagnosis on July 30, 2025. The process of writing again will be challenging and emotional with each article you pull together. Memories and struggles you had tucked away will wash back over you with each interview of your providers, conversation with your family and the reality of how far you have come. The last article will be the most difficult to complete. You will spend hours staring at a blank computer screen and the blinking cursor trying to find the right words to wrap up your series, and your journey. The tears of relief and joy will surprise you as you read the final draft to your steady, loving husband who has experienced all of the highs and lows with you.

You will not find all of the right words to use, but the ones that come to mind will be enough.

You are enough, you are a survivor, and your story’s ending remains unfinished.

Years ago, I told my family that I wanted my journey to help others even if it is a single person, and they remind me of this often. My desire is that I have gifted knowledge and hope to more than one individual, but if you are reading this and you are the only one, it has been worth it.

The Espresso Martini, or as my little sister annoyingly calls it the “Expresso Martini” (bless her heart) has been all the rage for the past few years. The trick, like with any good cocktail, is balance. Too bitter, and you’re drinking burnt coffee. Too sweet, and it tastes like a dessert from the gas station. It’s not about where you’re drinking it, it’s about who’s got the shaker and if they know what the heck they’re doing.

The Espresso Martini was born in London in the 1980s, thanks to legendary bartender Dick Bradsell. As the story goes, a young model asked him for something that would “wake me up and mess me up.” Bradsell grabbed vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur and a dash of simple syrup, shook it over ice and poured out a cocktail that’s been causing trouble ever since.

The key to a perfect Espresso Martini? Shake it like it owes you money. That shake isn’t just to chill the drink; it’s what creates that smooth, velvety layer on top that every good Espresso Martini needs. The natural oils in

coffee help create that silky, frothy layer of tight bubbles, but only if you shake hard enough. So, channel your inner bartender and give it some muscle!

As always, I recommend not cutting corners. Do yourself a favor and pull a fresh shot of espresso. Cool it down in the fridge or freezer before it hits the shaker, and never forget to garnish with three espresso beans on top. They’re not just there to make your drink look fancy; it's an old Italian tradition for health, wealth and happiness. Honestly, I’ll take all three.

You’re finally ready to make your own.

You’ve got the history, the technique and the tips; now it’s time to put your bartending skills into action. Just don’t forget to shake it right, sip it slow and for the love of caffeine, don’t call it “expresso.”

RECIPE:

• 2 ounces Vodka • 1 ounce Coffee Liqueur • 1 ounce Espresso • 1/2-ounce Simple Syrup • Coffee Beans

BACK TO SCHOOL AND BACK TO OUR ROOTS:

Celebrating 100 Years of Tradition Happy August, Ponca City! It’s my favorite month of the year, AUGUST! There’s something about the first day of school that stirs the soul, and it occurs in this wonderful month.

classrooms and carried the same hometown pride out into the world. As we mark this remarkable milestone, it’s impossible not to feel both humbled by the past and inspired by what’s ahead.

Maybe it’s the sound of a zipper closing on a brand-new backpack. Maybe it’s the smell of freshly sharpened pencils or the sight of yellow buses gliding down our tree-lined brick streets in the early morning light. Maybe it’s just that unmistakable feeling in the air. You know that smell; it’s that back-to-school smell that has a blend of hope, nerves and the slow turn of summer into fall that fills our nostrils. For generations, that feeling has signaled more than just a return to reading, writing and arithmetic.

It’s a signal that something magical is beginning again.

Ponca City Public Schools is more than buildings, books and computers. It’s a community project that has only thrived because of the steady support of people like you.

And as our students return to classrooms this month, I’m asking our community to rally once again around the cause of public education.

For many in Ponca City, the start of school brings a warm wave of nostalgia. We remember standing at the edge of the sidewalk, clutching our lunch boxes or rushing down the halls with a backpack that bounced on our shoulders.

We remember our nerves of meeting our teacher, who will we sit near or what will we have for lunch? We remember homecoming parades, crisp fall air and the glow of Friday night lights. And here in Ponca City, those memories are woven into the fabric of who we are.

This year is especially poignant as we welcome the 100th graduating class of Ponca City High School from our high school built so prominently on the hill of Overbrook Avenue! While Ponca City has had school since the late 1890s, this year marks the 100th class to enter our Charles P. Howell High School when it opened its doors in 1926.

Since then a full century of Wildcats have crossed that graduation stage. One hundred years of students who laughed in the same hallways, learned in the same

In today’s world, there’s no shortage of distractions, disagreements and reasons to divide. But education—real, local, public education still brings us together. It’s where futures are formed, talents discovered and confidence built. It’s where a child hears, maybe for the first time, “You’re good at this” or “You belong here.” And it only works when we all believe in it.

So, let’s show up. Let’s cheer at the games, volunteer in the classrooms and support our teachers. Let’s speak proudly of our schools, not just as places where kids learn, but as pillars of our town’s strength and promise.

Because when we believe in public schools, we believe in our children, our community and our future.

This August, as the bells ring and the buses roll, let’s remember: We’re not just starting a new school year.

We’re continuing a legacy that’s 100 years strong and growing.

Here’s to the class of 2026, and to every class that’s come before them. Here’s to crisp mornings, new beginnings and the Wildcat pride we all carry for this place we call home, Ponca City.

He’s defending Dr. Daniel Caro, a well-known Biloxi OB-GYN, who Is on trial for the murder of a young woman with whom he’d had an affair. Stafford Lee strongly believes in providing the best defense possible for his client, even when he thinks that client is a total scumbag (Dr. Daniel Caro, for example).

Besides the normal stresses associated with a trial, Stafford Lee is also dealing with a D.A. who should have recused himself (the victim was his niece) and Caro’s father, who has strong ties to

the Dixie Mafia and figures he can ensure his son’s freedom by threatening and roughing up Stafford Lee. Shortly after the trial ends, Stafford Lee’s world implodes. Eighteen months later, he’s just beginning to get back on his feet, both personally and professionally. Then, out of the blue, Stafford Lee is accused of murder.

Incriminating evidence has been planted in his home, as well as on his laptop and his phone.

So, what happens when America’s best lawyer becomes the number one suspect in a murder trial?

I was floored by the resolution of this novel. I totally did not expect “who done it.” Definitely a great read! ___________________________ Reviewed by Lorrie Layton

The Misfits: A Royal Conundrum

by Lisa Yee; Illustrated by Dan Santat Olive Cobin Zang is remarkably unremarkable.

She tends to fly below the radar without even trying to. Her parents regularly forget her birthday.

Teachers have trouble remembering who she is, and it makes her feel invisible. She’s learned that invisibility does have its benefits, but it’s still lonely.

I could so easily relate to Olive. I felt like I didn’t fit in many times during my school years.

The novel opens with Olive’s day weirder than normal. Her InstaFriends social media account had vanished, as if it never existed. Her mom shows up at school to withdraw Olive from school. (She forgot to mention it to Olive yesterday.) Olive discovers she’s been enrolled in the acclaimed Reforming Arts School near San Francisco. (No, that’s not a typo. It’s really the REforming Arts School—and it’s a former prison, to boot!)

Olive finds herself assigned to a pod of students who are also misfits. Their assigned instructors are Monica LaMonica, a martial arts expert, and Modest Cusak, a world-class Russian ballet dancer who defected to the U.S. After a battery of challenging trials, the pod is split in two based on skills. Olive and four other students feel like

complete failures, but Monica and Modest are excited. Monica shares that the five of them are exceptional! Their unique skills, attitudes and attributes are off the charts! They’ve been selected to join an elite force of specially trained operatives.

Yes, between you and me, you do need to suspend belief while enjoying this fun, silly romp of an adventure of misfits and underdogs. Author Lisa Yee is a Newbery honoree. Dan Santat is a Caldecott Medal winner, and his illustrations really round out our heroes’ exploits. This is such a fun novel! ___________________________ Reviewed by Lorrie Layton
