Letter from the Editor

April 2022 marks exactly two years since the inaugural issue of Ponca City Monthly was published. We are so excited to celebrate our 2nd birthday! During this very special month, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has helped make this magazine a possibility. My first employee and best friend, Jennifer Vaughan, who faithfully believes in all my crazy ideas; I couldn’t do it without you. Robyn Ryan, the right person at the right time and the one who advises and guides me on all things magazine, thank you for your tireless passion and your dedication. Carey Head, thank you for being an amazing writer, and a journalistic mentor to me. Andy Hicks, thank you for your limitless creativity and cool head; you are the glue that holds us together when things get crazy at the end of the month.

To my dedicated staff and team of monthly writers and contributors, you are the very heart and soul of the magazine. To everyone else who, at any time, told me they loved the magazine, thank you for reading our magazine. You are the reason we do what we do, and we are forever grateful for your support.

A very special thank you to my dedicated husband, Jay, who flies drones, writes geocache poetry, packs Gatehands, delivers magazines, and the plethora of other random tasks he does because of his neverending support of me. Farmer’s Market Looking for Vendors for the 2022 Summer Season Story by Chelsea McConnell/Staff Writer

Mary Ann Potter has now been

involved with the market for 16 years.

At first glance, the Ponca City Farmer’s Market is like any other farmer’s market, but to the observant eye, it’s a lifeline for many members of our community, as well as a quality-of-life component for local citizens. This much becomes clear after talking to the Market’s Secretary/Treasurer Mary Anne Potter after just a few minutes. Mary Anne and her husband Don moved to Ponca City in 1981. She still remembers visiting our town for the first time and asking if there was a Farmer’s Market. To her great satisfaction, there was! Mary Anne has now been involved with the market for 16 years. During that time, she has been a vendor and an Advisory Board member. For anyone who knows Mary Anne personally, it’s clear she is also one of the market’s biggest champions. The market is open seasonally beginning in June. It is held at the corner of 14th Street and Lake Road each Tuesday from 4-6 p.m. and Saturday from 8-11:00 a.m. The market offers a bounty of fruits, vegetables, home-baked bread and rolls, jams and jellies, artisan goats’ milk, soaps, lotions, fresh herbs, spice blends, herbal teas, honey, and according to the vendors, eggs from “happy hens and delirious ducks.” There are a few craft vendors who attend as well. One can even find local musician Herb Rains there from time to time. Herb sings and plays his guitar to help raise money for the Northern Oklahoma Humane Society. His music makes the market all the more enjoyable for

vendors and guests alike. It typically goes through September and occasionally into October. The timing each year depends on many factors that our local farmers are well used to dealing with, like weather conditions during their growing seasons and the success of a given crop or crops. Our local market has been around for many years now in many forms. Today, it is governed by an Advisory Board consisting of President Dawn Page, Vice President Paula Barney, Secretary/Treasurer Mary Anne Potter and Directors-at-Large Tabitha Starkey and Davy Brown. The group meets prior to the beginning of each market season to get

As it is with many local phenomena that citizens grow used to, there is much more to our local market than meets the eye. As an official Farmer’s Market registered by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, there are guidelines they must adhere to as set forth by the Oklahoma State Department of Health. The Board reviews these guidelines each season at their first annual meeting. It is then that they determine if any changes or amendments need to be made in order to keep the local market in good standing with state procedures. The guidelines mandate that markets must have a minimum of six vendors. Our market has anywhere from 15-20 each season. Numbers vary from week to week based on what our farmers have available for sale. Many vendors

specialize in particular crops and attend only when they have produce to sell. This is good news for local citizens! This gives us access to farmers who are experts at growing their particular crop and bring it to the market to sell when items are at their peak. Vendors pay annual membership fees of $25 and a set-up fee of $3 each time they attend the market. Non-members pay a $10 set-up fee to attend. Annual dues help the market with annual expenses, such as rental fees and marketing. Additional fund-raising is necessary each year to cover costs for the market. Heather Cannon Honda has generously sponsored the market this year. There are also other generous groups and individuals within our community who see

the value of the market and help support it each year, a fact the Advisory Board is very grateful for. The Farmer’s Market is not only a gift to our community, but also a gift to the vendors who participate each season. Being a member of the market sounds more like being a member of an eclectic and lovely extended family. Many vendors attend the market as a way to subsidize their income. Every fruit, vegetable and loaf of bread sold helps vendors support their family. This aspect makes each exchange like a bit of transactional magic. When you buy from a local vendor, you are purchasing something they made with skill, talent, hard work and their bare hands. You are purchasing a piece of them that you take home in order to feed and nurture your family. They in turn get the needed income to support theirs, and that is a beautiful thing. Vendors often act as local experts and even tour guides of our fair city. Centrally located at

14th & Lake Road right in front of the massive Pioneer Woman Statue, the market is often a stop for people in town for the weekend or even simply passing through Ponca City. The Pioneer Woman Statue is a great conversation starter with newcomers to our town. One can imagine how this can easily transition into a conversation about the many other statues, museums, lakes, unique shops and interesting things to do for a weekend, or longer, in Ponca City. Our community is fortunate to have this little bonus hub of tourism taking place twice a week right in front of one of our most noted community assets. You can find more information about the Ponca City Farmer’s Market through their Facebook page, or better yet, stop by the market and experience its bounty firsthand. If you’re lucky, maybe the market troubadour will be in attendance that day regaling attendees with live music. Fresh food, live music, local citizens – sounds like a good time!

INTRODUCING

JENNIFER LYNCH

New Director hopes to “revamp and reignite” Pioneer Woman Museum Story and Photos by Chelsea McConnell/Staff Writer

“If we had not had the type of pioneer women we had, we would not have the America we have today.” – Ernest Whitworth Marland, Commissioner and Donor of the Pioneer Woman Statue to the State of Oklahoma

Jennifer Lynch with corsetry exhibit

T

his quote can be found on the front page of the Pioneer Woman Museum’s website and seems a fitting introduction for Jennifer Lynch, the new Executive Director of the Pioneer Woman Museum. Jennifer comes to Ponca City via the Stillwater area, with stops along the way in Cushing, Cairo, Cape Town, Tunisia, Seattle and Oklahoma City. Born in Cushing, Oklahoma, Jennifer moved to Cairo at a young age. She spent her early years in different locations and cultures overseas and believes this helped shape who she is today. Jennifer attended the University of Central Oklahoma where she received her Bachelor’s in Museum Studies-Education with a minor in Gender Studies. She went on to attain her Master’s in Museum Studies with an emphasis on Collections and Accessibility. When asked why she has a passion for museums, Jennifer sums it up well. “It’s

traveling. It’s my parents. Any time we went anywhere, they were like, ‘What’s the museum? Let’s go there.’ It would always be the first thing my dad found out about.” According to Jennifer they would ask for personal recommendations and look in the phonebook to find museums to visit. “Anywhere we went, that was kind of our thing. And then my mom is an excellent decorator. I feel like her spiritually, I kind of took that on. So, I just became a historical decorator.” Jennifer began her museum career in Guthrie at the Oklahoma Territorial Museum. While initially hired to do education for the museum, that quickly fizzled out due to statewide budget cuts. To Jennifer’s benefit, this led to her processing items, doing collections work and installing exhibits. This is best explained in Jennifer’s own words. “Their textile collection was 3,000 items and most of it was brought during the

LYNCH Continued from Page 10 land run and it went up to the twenties. There was an actress there in Guthrie that donated all of her costumes from the 1920s. [The pieces were] real silk and just gorgeous. 3,000 items had been donated [in the] late eighties and the group at the time used baker boxes.” Jennifer’s job was to move the items from the baker boxes to new acidfree archival boxes to better protect the items. She also digitized everything with a barcode system. This system allowed them to be able to scan a box to pull up a file containing all the information about the item in the box. She worked on this one project for an entire year. Jennifer traveled within Oklahoma and out of state to share information about this project before creating an exhibition based on the collection. The exhibit she created was a corsetry exhibit that centered on the idea of “the corset as a

physical representation of women’s status at any point in time.” Eventually the exhibit was shrunk down so it could become a traveling exhibit. On a path that can’t be mistaken for coincidence, the exhibit landed in Ponca City at the Pioneer Woman Museum. This was a sweet surprise to Jennifer when she walked into the museum to interview for the Director’s position. From there, Jennifer did curator work traveling to museums in many communities across Oklahoma, including Ponca City, Altus and Clinton. At the different museums, she would work on different exhibit installations. Most recently, Jennifer taught pre- and post-civil war classes at her alma mater UCO before deciding she wanted to get back into the world of being a “historical decorator.” As she puts it, “I definitely enjoyed teaching, but the museum world is where I feel like I’m meant to be.”

“I definitely enjoyed teaching, but the museum world is where I feel like I’m meant to be.” With Jennifer’s diverse and learned background, the Pioneer Woman Museum is certainly fortunate to have her on their team. It’s too soon to give a glimpse into plans for the future, but Jennifer is full of exciting ideas. She’s looking forward to meeting with her Board of Directors and getting everyone on the same page as they make plans to revamp and reignite the museum and what it has to offer our community. Things to look forward to are potential updates to exhibit spaces, as well as updates to the exterior grounds. Jennifer is also passionate about getting involved with our community and collaborating with other groups in Ponca City.

The Pioneer Woman Museum and Statue are located at 701 Monument Road. According to their literature, the museum “commemorates the enduring, indomitable legacy of the pioneering women of

Oklahoma.” Year-round programs and events, and permanent and temporary exhibits showcase the variety of life experiences Oklahoma’s women have created, leaving their mark on the world. The museum is also home to the worldfamous 30-ft. bronze statue, “Confident,” a masterpiece unveiled in 1930. The beautiful gift store features handmade items from over 20 artists, many one-of-a-kind items. Pre-pandemic, the museum hosted over 20,000 visitors per year. Board members are Jessica Anderson, Ryan Burkett, Tamara Chaney, Brooke Dyer, Darlene Engleking, Hallie Godbehere, Jaimee Hurst, Chris LittleCook, Debbie Rue, Lacy St. Andrews, Diane Vaughan, Dave Williams and Tamara Wink. The Root Shop New Local Indoor Plant Specialty Shop Caters to Plant-Obsessed Millennials Story and Photos by Chelsea McConnell/Staff Writer Spanish playwright Pedro Calderon De La Barca once said, “Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises.” If you’re looking for a little more lovely this spring, look no further than new local business – The Root Shop. Kristen Suggs of Newkirk, Oklahoma, opened The Root Shop in February 2022. An ambitious entrepreneur, Suggs saw the lack of unique indoor plants available in our area and decided to solve the problem by opening her own business. “I wanted to get the uncommon things that you’d normally have to leave town for. I wanted to bring those to Ponca.”

she wasn’t the only person in our area with a passion for such plants, it was on one of these drives that she decided to jump into starting a business.

And jump she did! Suggs’ first step was deciding on a name for her plant shop. “I had a pen and paper and kept writing down names. It was probably two pages long. And you know, you would say them out loud. And for some reason, the root part really stood out to me because when I think about roots, I think about strength and foundation and how Ponca City is that for me, but like how you have to have good roots to even become who you are and for the plant to become who it is. So it just spoke to me. I think that’s what I want the business to be about; just the foundation, the The Root Shop owner Kristen Suggs with a strength, empowering selection of plants that she had set up for everybody to be as Ladies Night downtown. good as they can be.”

According to Suggs, it all started when she and her husband bought their home. As a new homeowner trying to find her decorating style, she knew she wanted to incorporate indoor plants to bring more life to their home. It was then she realized that Kay County didn’t have a store dedicated to indoor plants. To find what she wanted, Suggs was forced to drive to larger metro locations over an hour away from Ponca City and Newkirk. Knowing

Once the name was chosen, Suggs got to work building her website, learning about e-commerce and building greenhouses to take care of her stock. Currently, The Root Shop can be found online at www.therootshopco.com and on Facebook

Kristen’s Top 5: Marble Queen Pothos – This is one of

my favorites because of the beautiful leaf variegation! The white and green throughout the plant, with the way it forms the variegation, I think is beautiful. Who doesn’t love a super cute plant that is also easy to care for?

Philodendron Mican – This plant is my

favorite! The dark green velvety leaves are so soft! The underside of Mican leaves is a gorgeous red color. The red mixed with the velvety dark green leaves makes this plant a showstopper. Mican plants are happy almost anywhere. They are a trailing plant making them stunning on shelves and as hanging plants!

Fiddle Leaf Fig – If you need a statement

piece in your home or office, this is it! The Fiddle Leaf Fig has gorgeous huge leaves making them eye-catching! As the fiddle leaf grows, the leaves typically get bigger and the tree will branch out making no two the same!

Syngonium Podophyllum “Arrowhead” – This is a plant with

many different varieties! The pink variegation is my favorite! The pop of pink is the perfect mix with the light green leaves. I am so fascinated looking at how this plant produces its variegation. It is living art.

Alocasia Maharani – Alocasias are

my favorite to collect! Anytime I see one, I have to have it! Alocasias have arrowhead-shaped leaves that can grow huge as the plant matures! They typically shed some of their old leaves to produce new, bigger ones. Getting to watch the plant uncurl and grow its new leaves is so satisfying! It is a beautiful process.

Birds Of A Feather

Getting to know your backyard feathered friends

Blue Jay

Story and Photos By Andy Hicks / Staff Writer

Long before I was bitten by the media industry bug, I dreamed of a life outside. In high school, I started working at a camp during the summers and I loved it. Hiking, crafts, dodgeball, swimming, and bird watching were all part of our daily activities. I loved camp so much that after I graduated high school I went to work for the camp yearround. Today, the camp has a giant recreational facility for year-round activities, but my time there was way before that. Needless to say, there wasn’t much to do during the off-season. I know it’s impossible to imagine but this was before smartphones and before places like a camp office had a computer. In the fall of the year I started working full time at the camp we received a grant from the Audubon Society to count and note every bird that came to a particular feeding area we set up. There I sat for an hour a day for two months with my binoculars and my handy dandy “Guide to Birds of North America” book counting birds. Let me be honest. At first, my 18-year-old self hated every minute of it. For the two months, I needed the book less and less, and before long I found myself watching and (mentally) counting birds wherever I went - something I still do to this day.

Now I am blessed to have an enclosed patio so I can watch the birds that frequent my yard here in Ponca City. I have a tree right outside my patio that I have loaded down with bird feeders so I have a front-row seat to all the excitement. Bird watching is relaxing and meditative. In some aspects, it’s similar to watching a soap opera, or maybe that is just how I see it. Because I see many of the same birds day in and day out, I start to give them names and backstories just to keep things entertaining. If you have an interest in bird watching it’s easy to get started and before long birds will make your backyard visits part of their routine. Oklahoma is home to a wide variety of birds that may frequent your feeding spots but depending on the time of year you are likely to see “regulars” fueling up for a day of fun.

Female Cardinal and Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Food and Water Providing both food and water is a sure bet to get the birds to flock to your viewing spot. I have a very nice birdbath that was left to me by the previous owners of my house. Birds, however, aren’t particular. Any birdbath will be sufficient from a cheap one from the dollar store to a fancy cement one like mine. Two things you want to keep in mind though, during the summer months your birdbath will need to be filled almost daily. Also, as the summer heat can sometimes stagnate the water, you might have to scrub algae out of it. I typically only have to clean my birdbath maybe two or three times a year. You will know when it is time to clean it! Most bird seeds commercially available are generally designed to

Blue Jay (see pic on page 21) The Blue Jay is a very common, large songbird. You can easily spot them because of their perky crest; blue, white, and black plumage; and noisy calls. Blue Jays are known for their intelligence and complex social systems with tight family bonds. Their fondness for acorns is credited with helping spread oak trees after the last glacial period. Blue Jays prefer tray feeders, eating off the ground rather than hanging feeders, and they prefer peanuts, sunflower seeds, and suet.

defends its breeding territory from other males. When a male sees its reflection in glass surfaces, it frequently will spend hours fighting the imaginary intruder. Tufted Titmouse A little gray bird with an echoing voice, the Tufted Titmouse is common in eastern deciduous forests and a frequent visitor to feeders. The large black eyes, small, round bill, and brushy crest give these birds a quiet but eager expression that matches the way they flit through canopies, hang from twigends, and drop in to bird feeders. When a titmouse finds a large seed, you’ll see it carry the prize to a perch and crack it with sharp whacks of its stout bill.

Tufted Titmouse

Cardinal They’re a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you can’t take your eyes off. Even the brown females sport a sharp crest and warm red accents. Cardinals don’t migrate and they don’t molt into a dull plumage, so they’re still breathtaking in winter’s snowy backyards. In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning. Nearly any bird feeder you put out will attract Northern Cardinals but they particularly seem to use sunflower seeds. The male cardinal fiercely

House Finch (see pic on page 24) Have you seen this cheerful red headed bird at your feeder? The house is a relatively new addition to our area and you can hear its long, twittering song, which can now be heard in most of the neighborhoods of the continent. The House Finch was originally a bird of the western United States and Mexico. In 1940 a small number of finches were turned loose on Long Island, New York, after failed attempts to sell them as cage birds (“Hollywood finches”). They quickly started breeding and spread across almost all of the eastern United States and southern Canada within the next 50 years.

Dark-Eyed Junco Dark-eyed Juncos are neat, even flashy little sparrows that flit about forest floors of the western mountains and Canada, then flood the rest of North America for winter. They’re easy to recognize by their crisp (though extremely variable) markings and the bright white tail feathers they habitually flash in flight. Dark-eyed Juncos are among the most abundant forest birds of North America. Look for them on woodland walks as well as in flocks at your feeders or on the ground beneath them. Downy Woodpecker One of my most frequent feeders is the Downy Woodpecker. They prefer suet feeders, but are also fond of black oil sunflower seeds, millet, peanuts, and chunky peanut butter. Look for Downy Woodpeckers in woodlots, residential areas, and city parks. Be sure to listen for the characteristic high-pitched pik note and the descending whinny call. Male and female Downy Woodpeckers divide up where they look for food in winter. Males feed more on small branches and weed stems, and females feed on larger branches and trunks. Males keep females from foraging in the more productive spots

They are typically clearly marked so you know what you are getting. Sometimes you just have to test out what foods work best for your backyard buddies and note that they can sometimes be picky about what they eat.

Hummingbirds are quite common around Ponca City but if you want to attract them you need a special hummingbird feeder. This type of feeder holds a special liquid nectar that you can easily make by mixing 1 part sugar with 4 parts water. Hummingbird nectar can turn toxic in the summer

heat so if you want hummingbirds you should plan to clean and change the nectar in the feeder every few days to ensure the health and safety of these tiny little friends. There are also any number of flowers and bushes you can plant that will attract hummingbirds. Suet cakes, which are bars of fat with bird seed mixed in, are also a great treat for your feathery friends. This type of feed requires a special (very inexpensive) cage to hold the cakes. Once installed the birds can swoop in and hang on the cage and eat the yummy cake. Suet cakes are typically a winter treat as the cakes can melt in the heat of

summer. In my first year in Ponca, I couldn’t keep the suet cakes filled. As soon as I would put them out they would be gone almost instantly. This year, I planned and bought a case of them and my birds haven’t touched them at all. Just like the birdbath, they couldn’t care less what you feed them in or on. You can throw the birdseed directly on the ground and they will be more than happy to eat it up.

Squirrels Friend or Foe A lot of bird-watching enthusiasts have a love/ hate relationship with squirrels. They tend to eat a ton of birdseed and if you have a nice Big Deloris

birdfeeder they can be destructive. You have two options in dealing with the squirrels, you can view them as a friend or foe. I choose to see my squirrels as friends. I keep them (for the most part) out of my birdfeeders by simply providing them with alternative food sources. In most places you can buy birdseed you will find “critter food” which consists mostly of corn and larger items that would be too big for birds. House Finch

If you haven’t been downtown lately, you’re missing out!

City Central 400 E. Central Suite 201G 580-763-8082

INVESTOR Each month Ponca City Main Street features one of its long time Investors. It is through the support of our valued Investors that we can continuously improve the heart of Ponca City by attracting and promoting merchants and visitors to our downtown. Recently, we sat down with brothers Paul and Ross Kyler of Kyler Construction Group to discuss their family-owned business. Paul and Ross were born and raised in Pawhuska and moved to Ponca City once they finished college to join their dad Randy at the family business. This is truly a family business as, Lynnette, who is mom to the brothers and wife to Randy, and Kalyn, Ross’s wife, oversee the office work Paul Kyler for the company. Although the name has changed, Kyler Construction Group has been in operation since 1978 and has evolved from providing mainly drywall, acoustical ceiling and contract maintenance services to a competitive bid and construction management firm. With offices in Ponca City and Bartlesville, the company specializes in new construction as well as remodel services for businesses, schools, medical facilities and houses of worship. A project they are particularly proud of is the Ponca City High School Concert Hall, which is an exceptional facility and one of the only true concert halls at a high school in the state. However, their work is not limited to Ponca City and Bartlesville, Kyler Construction Group has projects throughout Oklahoma and into Kansas. The brothers pride themselves on living up to their company’s mission of providing construction services honestly, ethically and efficiently. They’ve worked hard to continuously improve client experiences and strive to be organized, knowledgeable and professional with clients and within the industry.

OUR MISSION is to serve Ponca City and its citizens by promoting quality of life through the revitalization of downtown. Our Vision is to make downtown the heart of our community! Our Transformation Strategies are Arts & Entertainment and Community Connection.

SPOTLIGHT Paul and Ross are also committed to their employees and treat them like family. They’re involved with nearly every aspect of the business and believe in developing employees and promoting from within through training, onsite experience and problem solving. This hands-on approach has worked well for them and has led to low turnover at the company. With little spare time between running Kyler Construction Group and their cattle ranch, the brothers and their families still make community involvement a priority. Over the years, they’ve been involved in the Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce and Leadership Ponca City, and have supported and Ross Kyler contributed to many other area organizations. Paul and Ross credit their wives Molly and Kalyn with helping to establish and cultivate their many community connections. Paul and Ross have supported Ponca City Main Street throughout the years as they believe in the importance of a strong and thriving downtown that offers a sense of pride for the community. Their favorite part of downtown is the Poncan Theatre. Throughout the years, Kyler Construction Group has completed building improvements at the Poncan Theatre and recently helped facilitate the bid process for the new roof repair. They also have personal connections to the Poncan Theatre and credit it and Evans Children’s Academy with being a confidence booster for their children. Paul and Molly’s daughter was a part of many productions when she was growing up in Ponca City, and Ross and Kalyn’s three school-aged daughters are all heavily involved in the productions now. Kalyn also serves as the president of the board for the Poncan Theatre.

A Family’s Shot at Creating a Love for the Outdoors Story and Photos by Laina Smith/Staff Writer

Kay County is known for its farmland and lakes. The primary two lakes known in the county are Kaw Lake and Ponca Lake. Not only does Kay County have lakes, but it also has a lot of farm and hunting land. Newkirk has had a bait and tackle shop since the 1970s when the building was built at 712 E. 7th St. The original bait shop, owned by Craig Free, was named Black Jacks Bait and Tackle. In 2017 the shop was taken over by Beverly Smith. Smith kept the name but added some new products. In September 2019, Curtis Grace and his son Jason bought the shop and turned it into a something-foreveryone outdoor shop. When the Graces purchased the building, they renovated it to have the storefront people see today. Curtis has always loved the outdoors and has instilled that in his children’s lives as well. His son Spencer Grace is a game warden in Kay County. His other son Jason Grace co-owns Grit and Grace Outdoors with him and works at the Big Fork Ranch as ranch manager for Evans and Associates.

Curtis Grace, Owner of Grit and Grace Outdoors, stands proudly by his 2022 business of the year plaque from the city of Newkirk.

“We’ve lived out here east of Newkirk along the Kaw Lake,” Curtis said. “Those boys had the opportunity to grow in the outdoors, and they got jobs for that. In that science, we all want to give back, and

the way we give back is to do something like this.” Before Curtis bought Grit and Grace Outdoors, he managed the Newkirk COOP for 35 years. Once retired, he wanted to create a way to get more people involved in the outdoors and decided to purchase the bait stand. “Having a fun time at it,” Curtis said. “We have children that make their parents stop and come to the bait stand.” The outdoor store offers many different products ranging from fishing to camping, including rods, reels and bait. “We sell; right now, in our store here, we have several different varieties of poles,” Curtis said. “Some of them are custom, where you can’t get them at your local Walmart or what have you. We have Huckabee Rods. We have what they call Slimecat Rods. Right now, we have also Outlaw Rods. We have Meat Hunter Rods for those that are going after the big catfish … We have about anything and everything that you want to fish with. We kind of put it all through the building here. Different segments of what you want to fish for. We have spinners and what have you.” Along with regular outdoor supplies and services, the shop carries locally-sourced

Grit and Grace Outdoors also offers live bait, such as minnows, perch, worms, and frozen bait. The shop also carries live goldfish. The store capitalizes on one specific group of products, which is the “Made in Newkirk” section. “In our facility, we do have Made in Newkirk,” Curtis said. “So, Made in Newkirk here, we own a lure company called SugarBooger Baits. We bought that company a year and a half ago. It used to be in Bass Pro. It was called Illusion Lures. We changed the name on it. Then we have Atomic Baits, which is another young man that is related to Jason, my middle boy. His brother-in-law that makes these other lures.”

Grit and Grace Outdoors sells locally sourced and homemade jams. Seen here is their Sandplum Jam that can be purchased at the shop.

Different seasons create popularity for different products. For instance, in spring, crappie rods are popular. The shop also offers live crawfish to the public in the summer season. On top of the outdoor products Grit and Grace Outdoors carries, the shop also has services such

as providing hunting and fishing licenses, as well as providing knowledge about the outdoors to their patrons. “The unique thing is providing a service,” Curtis said. “Everyone provides one, but the service that I provide is I’m out there hunting and fishing, and if

“We’re one of few,” Curtis said. “Instead of having to drive to Wichita or Oklahoma City or Tulsa, we’re here in Northern Oklahoma.” Grit and Grace Outdoors does not have a website at this time, but is in the works to produce one in the future. However, the shop does have a Facebook page. Here you can find out fishing reports and information about products in the store. You can also watch Curtis and many others on their Facebook lives. You can also find information on the Facebook page about hunting and fishing competitions the store hosts, as well as other competitions in the area. “We’re always doing fish competitions,” Curtis said. “We do the big buck and big doe contest. So we’re always doing stuff for people to have fun with. We weigh the deer in, and it doesn’t cost anything when we do the deer competition. That went really successful this year. We give gift certificates and of course a grand prize at that time too.”

The Story of Ponca City Monthly Magazine Story and Photos by Kelsey Wagner/Editor-in-Chief Editor’s Note: They say that opportunity is a door you must be willing to walk through. In the case of Ponca City Monthly, opportunity walked through my door. I am thrilled for the 2nd Birthday of Ponca City Monthly to finally tell the story of how it all began. I hope you enjoy reading it, as much as I have enjoyed living it.

August 2017

MyMediaMatters Marketing Agency was founded one week after I was given notice of being laid off from a local company. I continued working at that company until my separation date of November 2017. I then took the giant leap to full-time business ownership.

November 2017

Determined to chart my own course, I worked and grew MyMediaMatters for the entirety of 2018 from my home office, slowly building my clientele and establishing my business. At that time, I designed websites and did graphic design work.

October 2018

After a very successful first year, I realized I was overwhelmed and needed help, so I hired my first employee, Jennifer Vaughan. Jennifer helped me exponentially grow our company over the next year, and by April 2019, we knew that we needed an office.

January 2019

I had heard that The Ponca City News owned an extensive portfolio of domain names and emails, so seeing an opportunity to expand my business, I walked into Tom Muchmore’s office in January 2019 and asked if he would ever consider selling them. Tom looked at me and said he had just sold The Ponca City News a few days before that and that I should talk with the new owner who was in the next office. I was anxious to add email hosting to my list of offerings to my website clients, so we struck a deal, and I became the new owner of PoncaCity.net’s portfolio domain and email clients. As it happened, through my purchase of the emails, I met many local Ponca City citizens who utilized the PoncaCity.net email service, including Robyn Ryan, who at this time was still working at The Ponca City News. Robyn wished me well with the email service. Robyn and I knew of each other because her father, Fred Boettcher, had been a business mentor to me. I found out from a Facebook post that Robyn Ryan officially retired from The Ponca City News in June of 2019.

May 2019

Jennifer and I moved into our first teeny tiny 10-ft by 12-ft office in City Central in May of 2019.

PCM Continued from Page 33 October 2019

In October, we hired an office manager. Jennifer and I continued to work on websites and graphic design, but I was looking ahead at this point at how else I could diversify our business. The Birth of Ponca City Monthly MyMediaMatters’s first office was in the Link on the first floor of City Central. The Link has a large common area with couches, and it was often used as a meeting location, so we were used to having lots of random visitors. One day in late October, such a meeting took place between PCDA and an Oklahoma tech company. The tech company was working on a project for PCDA. The CEO of the tech company, was very familiar with Ponca City and had some ideas on a different project. A staffer from PCDA brought him into the MyMediaMatter’s office and introduced him to our staff. He explained that his firm, in addition to technology, also produced a hyperlocal magazine and had for the decade. Still, he had always felt that a publication similar to his could do very well in a town like Ponca City. I sat there, absorbing what he was saying. I was mesmerized by his story and moved that he would take the time to share it with me. As CEO of my own tech company, he asked me if I would ever consider starting a magazine in Ponca City. At that point, I had to just laugh and say, no, I hadn’t, but that I was known for “jumping in headfirst” with crazy ideas and that I would seriously consider it. I took a few weeks to consider the idea. I talked with several trusted friends, but what I couldn’t help noticing was the feeling in my gut. I had felt it before. The feeling deep, deep down that I knew without knowing that this was something I was supposed to do. I’ve always trusted my gut, and it’s never led me astray. So, in December of 2019, I decided to start a magazine.

January 2020

I began putting a team together. I sought out monthly columnists who I felt could deliver quality content each month. Rachel Stewart, Paul Muehlberg, and Kat Long were the first people I asked to contribute. Their faith in a magazine that didn’t exist yet still moves me. I decided that the inaugural issue would debut on April 1. Initially, I did not plan on hiring an Advertising Director, but decided that I would likely need someone at least part-time to ensure a successful magazine launch. In early January, a chance meeting would change the fate of my life and the magazine forever. Robyn Ryan, wearing workout clothes and in a bit of a hurry, stopped in my office to have her email password changed. Password changes were a common occurrence and didn’t take long. She sat and chatted with me about life while I changed her password. The feeling in my gut suddenly hit me again. Here was Robyn, someone I knew of but didn’t know well, and something was compelling me to talk to her about the magazine. “Listen, Robyn, I am working on a project, and I may need someone to sell advertising. I know you are retired, but do you know anyone who might be interested in some part-time work?” Robyn skeptically looked at me and said she didn’t know anyone that would be a good fit. At this point, I had told almost no one about the magazine and was hoping to keep it safely under wraps for a while longer, so I was hesitant to disclose the full project with her; however, the gut feeling hit me again. “Well, would you ever consider selling ads again?” I proceeded to share my vision of the magazine with her, and I watched as she began to understand the full extent of this opportunity.

SPREAD KINDNESS

In an effort to be proactive with spreading kindness in Ponca City, each month we will share ideas for what you can do to show kindness. For the Month of April we are going to focus on showing kindness to our schools. Here are some ideas you can do to show kindness for our Ponca City schools:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Post positive comments on Facebook about our schools. Promote the positive things our schools are doing. Provide after-school tutoring. Donate food items for events. Help financially sponsor field trips. Donate gift cards, candy and treats for kindness awards and other school events. Help with end-of-year school events. Volunteer to be a math, reading and recess mentor. Give “Be Kind” stickers to each student.

Volunteer to be test proctors. Support the school’s book fairs. Donate items such as clothing, soap, deodorant, shampoo, etc., as needed. Recognize the work of the school staff and let them know they are appreciated.

PCM Continued From Page 34 Robyn and I talked for a long time that day. She told me how much she loved her advertisers during her time at the News. She loved graphic design, and she loved Ponca City, but she just wasn’t sure if she wanted to go back to work full time. I told her I understood but also explained that it would be a fully remote, flexible position. She could work when she wanted, where she wanted, and as much as she wanted. She said she had never had that offered to her before, but she needed time to consider it. Robyn was going on a beach vacation with her family in mid-February and told me she would decide after her vacation. Robyn recalls the encounter like this, “I remember coming to the MyMediaMatters office for help with my email. After a lot of catching up, Kelsey shared with me that she was going to start a magazine. I remember thinking it was a really great idea, but also realizing that I had only been retired (for the second attempt) for six months and wondered if I really wanted to go back to work. The last thing Kelsey said when I walked out the door was, “I’m going to call you in about a month.” Kelsey had to know she piqued my interest because I don’t have a very good poker face. For a month, I told myself, “The magazine is going to be a hit, and you will regret not being a part of it.” Kelsey called in a month, and the rest is history.”

February 2020

In early February, news had begun buzzing about a new virus in China, one I had never heard of, called COVID-19. I had a previously scheduled trip to Louisville, KY, the same week Robyn was on vacation. While I was in Louisville, the buzz about the virus was gaining a scary amount of momentum. The isolated cases confirmed in the US in January were quickly spreading, and I wondered what it could mean for the future of our magazine. Robyn returned from her trip, and I called to ask her what she had decided. Robyn, thankfully, agreed to join our team at Ponca City Monthly! I was thrilled. There was so much work to be done, and her decision only reaffirmed my dedication to the launch. Robyn hit the ground running. We printed up two “mock” covers, and Robyn began her first month of ad sales while I worked on creating content. Robyn says of that first month, selling ads for a magazine that didn’t exist yet felt like she was selling “her reputation and air.” Robyn said she had a few old friends who might be interested in coming on board. Robyn introduced me to Carey Head, who enthusiastically joined as a staff writer. Patrick Jordan, another long-time friend of Robyn’s, joined and creates custom crosswords for PCM every month and also does copyediting. Beverly Bryant joined to do copy editing, another friend and associate of Robyn, and later Sherry Cable, also introduced by Robyn Ryan, became our magazine story editor. We visited local stores and got permission to put our large magazine racks in their places of business, including Walmart, the RecPlex, El Patio, Homeland, Ponca City Discount Foods, and many other smaller locations.

March 2020

By March, we had finalized our first list of advertisers and stories and were beginning to layout the first magazine. I wanted the first issue’s cover to be iconic, so I asked Mayor Homer Nicholson to grace the cover. The mayor has overseen twenty years of growth in Ponca City. He has been present at all the major milestones, the groundbreakings, the ribbon cuttings, the award ceremonies, and he is always there saying the same thing, “It’s Another Great Day in Ponca City.” That’s what I wanted for our first magazine issue because I felt it truly was a historic moment for our town.

PCM Continued From Page 37 March 16, 2020

On Friday, March 13, life was still semi-normal, but by Monday, March 16, the entire world had completely shut down. Our office closed, and everyone in our office was instructed to work entirely remotely. Luckily, Robyn had already completed her in-person visits in February.

March 23, 2020

One week into the worldwide shut down, and I was beginning to doubt our April 1st magazine launch date. The world was trapped in their houses, no one was leaving, and here I was excitedly launching a local magazine? It felt like the complete opposite of what I should be focused on, but we were too far in to change plans now. I kept wondering how people would even get magazines if they were going to stores? I was worried our magazine was doomed to failure before it even began.

March 27, 2020

The first issue of Ponca City Monthly officially dropped on March 27, 2020. Because of the pandemic, everyone was staying home, so we decided to do home deliveries of the magazine. Robyn, Jennifer, Carey, Patrick, and I delivered to addresses all over Ponca City. Transmission of the virus was still questionable, so we delivered wearing masks and plastic gloves, dropping magazines on doorsteps without directly interacting with anyone. One week into April, and we still had a lot of magazines left to hand out. One afternoon I loaded up a wagon, and along with my two children walked my entire neighborhood, placing one magazine on the step of each house. I had launched a magazine in the middle of a global pandemic, and while I was walking down the

road with a wagon full of magazines, I did question if I had made all the right decisions. After the inaugural issue was released, it was time to start on the second issue, and by the time the second issue was out, we were working on the third. When the world stopped turning in March and April, and the pandemic was raging throughout the world, I was worried that our magazine might flounder. I was worried that people would not care about local news or would not make time to read our local content. I found out later the opposite was true.

May 2020

When we launched Ponca City Monthly in April of 2020, by fate or by chance, our magazine ended up being a tiny bit of good news in a world of bad. It was a ray of sunshine and hope when hope was needed most. By our second issue, which featured rainbow murals on our COVID-ravaged hospital’s windows with the message “HOPE STRENGTH COMMUNITY,” on the cover, I could feel that the heartbeat of the community had come alive in our magazine. I began to get messages about the stories featured in April and May saying how much people were moved by them and how the good news in our magazine had helped them get through one of the most challenging times of the pandemic.

June 2020 and beyond

Ponca City Monthly has grown, changed, and evolved over the last two years. In April 2020, our magazine was 32 pages, and this month it is 80 pages! We continue to seek new and exciting stories to deliver to our readers. We get regular feedback from our

38 APRIL 2022

readers that they love our ads as much as the content because they love staying up to date with what our local businesses are offering, including seasonal sales, specials, and new services. Robyn Ryan meticulously and carefully creates each advertisement for the magazine each month (and some ads are provided by the businesses). In June of 2021, after moving to larger offices three times in City Central, we purchased a downtown building and officially relocated MyMediaMatters and Ponca City Monthly to the new building. This move was significant because it was owned by Fred and Sue Boettcher. In fact, it was the first building Fred had purchased and renovated downtown. For both Robyn and I, the move felt serendipitous. We both knew that Fred would be so proud to have us working side by side in a building he poured his heart into. Robyn says of her decision to join Ponca City Monthly magazine, “I have the opportunity to work with many clients that I worked with for about 25 years and many new ones. I have no regrets about coming out of my short retirement, and in fact, I’m very glad I did and am very proud of what we’ve accomplished in 2 short years.” MyMediaMatters is the company that produces Ponca City Monthly magazine, and everyone on our team contributes to its success. In April 2021, Andy Hicks joined our team to create the layout and design of the magazine, and he has done a fantastic job for the last year. All the tiny details and fun layouts are thanks to him. Jill Rowe joined MMM in September 2022, and in addition to doing social media, she wrtites our Cocktail of the Month articles.

ArtSpace: Clint Rowe Story and Photos by Jill Rowe/Staff Writer

“You can’t describe what it is without knowing where it came from,” Clint Rowe says when being asked to describe what his method of paint application is. “Pinstriping started on stagecoaches in the 1800s and was very ornamental with a filigree look to it.” Simple, decorative, hand-painted lines were used to decorate horse-drawn carriages. Pinstriping carried on from wagons and buggies to the Ford Model T and eventually gained popularity in the 1950s with the rise of the custom

x V

automobile and hot rod culture.

40 APRIL 2022

The emergence of hot rod and custom car modfications prompted the implementation of custom hand-painted details. “Ken Howard, also known as “Von Dutch” invented a style that most modern pinstripers still use to this day.” Clint adds, “he took it and ran with it, and became the most famous pinstriper of all time.” Von Dutch established a style that is still imitated today and inspired the craze known as “The Golden Era of Pinstriping” purely by accident. Growing up, Clint and his grandfather, Harrison spent a lot of time in his shop and often frequented local car shows together. His grandfather talked about a friend he had in high school who hand-painted one of his cars. While attending a car show together in 2006, they came across a pinstriping booth. This was his first introduction to live pinstriping. He was immediately drawn to the art and bombarded the artist with questions. The pinstriper offered him basic information on what mediums he

needed to buy for painting. Clint rushed home and ordered the paint and brushes right away. “This was a time before there was a presence online like there is now,” Clint says. “There were no Facebook groups, and almost no information online. But there were a couple of books available.” He ordered Alan Johnson’s “How

to Pinstripe,” reading it countless times. Over the years, he gradually taught himself how to pinstripe. For years Clint painted on glass for practice because he could wipe it off and do it again, or on powder-coated aluminum panels. In 2009 he went to a car show in Dennison, TX, and met Butch Tucker, known as “Butchr” from Mesa, AZ, and Ron Myers from Tulsa, OK. Being masters of pinstriping, they took him under their wings, influencing his work for the better. A year later, he met David Hightower from Pittsburg, KS, who remains his biggest influence to this day. Clint says, “David is the inventor of what us pinstripers call ‘panel pinstriping,’ he was the very first person to do it. It changed the game for pinstripers.” David’s art transcended the car and motorcycle culture, turning pinstriping into fine art. He adds, “Dave’s pretty much the reason I

paint, in my style.” Clint describes his style as, “intricate, original, different, with an interest in color theory and making sure each color stands out.” His work has evolved through his influences. He says, “you see someone using design elements you like and end up incorporating them into your work.” Aside from pinstriping he also does hand-lettering, sign painting, gold leaf, and graphic design. Recently, he approached the local brewery in town, Vortex Alley Brewing, about a design idea he had for labels for canned beer. The label features hand-drawn lettering and a custom design. They loved it and hired him to design a few of their beer labels as they get released. So, keep an eye out for his beautiful work on Vortex Alley Brewing’s canned beer soon!

David’s art transcended the car and motorcycle culture, turning pinstriping into fine art. ROWE Continued From Page 41 I guess I’m slightly biased, being married to Clint, but I love his artwork. I have to take a moment to brag because his style of painting is a dying art, and he truly is an incredible artist. Clint was asked to go to Las Vegas as a featured pinstriper at one of the biggest classic car shows in the country, Viva Las Vegas in 2017. He painted alongside some of the best pinstripers not, only in the U.S. but in the world. He arrives at car shows before they even begin to paint people’s cars and stays working until after they close. Watching him pinstripe is mesmerizing. To sweep the brush along the full length of a car, leaving a perfectly straight line without any guidelines, it takes hands as steady as a surgeon’s and a lot of trust. Clint is taking on limited commissions these days. He enjoys spending his free time working on his motorcycles and riding them when the weather permits. You can view more of his artwork on Instagram or TikTok @electricstartclint. To contact Clint to purchase artwork or for custom work email him at electricstartclint@gmail.com.

Story by Jennifer Vaughan/Staff Writer If you’ve ever second-guessed accepting the alcohol offered to you at seemingly every function and occasion, or if you’ve ever entertained the possibility that your life might be better without alcohol in it, you might be sober curious.

May 8, 2021. For me, it wasn’t a decision that I had to make every single day, one day at a time. I took the same approach as Holly Whitaker, author of Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol.

According to Ruby Warrington, author of Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol, “[Being sober curious] means, literally, to choose to question, or get curious about, every impulse, invitation, and expectation to drink, versus mindlessly going along with the dominant drinking culture.”

“I am an extremist, a ‘let’s get to the point’ kind of woman. I don’t dabble in gray areas for long or suffer through things pixel by pixel. I drink the ocean. What worked for me at the beginning was not deciding day by day that I wouldn’t drink that day. What worked for me was obliterating the idea that I would ever drink again, striking the possibility completely, making a decision and never questioning it.”

April 1, 2022 marks 328 days since I made the decision to stop drinking alcohol. I don’t actually keep track of the days; I just search my iPhone calendar for “Last Hangover” and then I Google how long it’s been since that calendar entry on

Not even a year later and my entire life has changed to the point that I’m filled with joy and brought to tears as I look back. I didn’t once question my decision to stop drinking, but it was certainly uncomfortable at times.

Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk’s book, The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body In the Healing of Trauma was invaluable to me in my journey and offers this quote, “‘The night sea journey’ is the journey into the parts of ourselves that are split off, disavowed, unknown, unwanted, cast out, and exiled to the various subterranean worlds of consciousness ... The goal of this journey is to reunite us with ourselves. Such a homecoming can be surprisingly painful, even brutal. In order to undertake it, we must first agree to exile nothing.” – Stephen Cope, Author If you’re human, you’ve lived a complex accumulation of experiences and deciding to explore a sober lifestyle is a big change. I encourage anyone who is sober curious to go to therapy, reference the books mentioned above, download a meditation app, find Jesus and do yoga.

I recently watched a movie where someone’s wife passed away and his friends were saying things to him like, “She would have wanted you to move on and be happy” and “Your wife in heaven sent you this new woman to find happiness with.” I just want to go on record and say, for me personally, no. Nope. Nuh uh. Abso-freaking-lutely not. One, me being in heaven is debatable. Two, I didn’t “send” any one to him, you absolute liar. Three, if I die before my spouse and anyone has the audacity to say some crap like that to him, I swear on my last dying breath I’ll not only come back to haunt him and his new girlfriend, but I’ll haunt you and your lying butt too. My widowed spouse had a lifetime of happiness with me, he doesn’t need to be happy anymore. He will live out the rest of his days in sorrow and misery. Do I make myself clear? This

goes for my friends too. Don’t you dare even attempt to replace me in our friend group. On second thought, there is no more friend group. It’s done. No one is allowed to have friends anymore. As far as I’m concerned, after I’m gone, happiness and joy will cease to exist for all of my family and friends. I was the ray of freaking sunshine in all their lives, and now that I’m gone every day is just a dreary smog of despair. And if for even a brief second you all aren’t thinking about me and mourning me and you start to feel a tiny spark of joy or happiness, ghost-Rachel will pop in and ruin your entire day. You think alive-Rachel is annoying? Well you’re in for a real treat, because alive-Rachel won’t even hold a candle to how annoying ghost-Rachel will be if y’all don’t heed this warning.

Story by Adam Leaming, Ponca City Public Schools/Contributing Writer I was tasked with explaining what’s happening at the Capitol in regard to public education. That’s a tall order when writing a monthly column when things at the Capitol can pivot and shift each day. However, I’ll give my best and I appreciate the editor (Kelsey) being gracious with giving me as much time as possible to summarize what we’ve seen thus far. The biggest hot topic issue facing education at the Capitol is authored by our Senate Pro Tem Greg Treat, and championed by our Governor. Senate Bill 1647 aims to give a portion of the funds that go to public education directly to the parents to choose how to use for their children’s education. This past month SB 1647 has had a tough uphill battle, but it has passed both the Senate Education and the Senate Appropriations committees with slim margins. It’s now set for Senate floor consideration. This bill has many political heavy hitters supporting it and has shown a rift is forming in the Republican Party. The Speaker of the House, Charles McCall has gone on public record to say if this bill passes the Senate, it will not be heard in the house. Why is that?

However, with the potential approval of Senate Bill 1647 the foundational roots of my rural education will be rattled. This bill will have a real and profound impact on rural communities like mine and yours. Passage of this bill will send a greater proportion of tax dollars to the metros where the abundance of private schools is present and leaving less funds for the same amount of students in our rural communities. At article submission time, Senate bill 1647 had not been heard on the floor but is scheduled to go to the floor in the coming week. If it does pass the Senate, I would encourage you to carefully consider its impact in your community. As for me, I’m public school loud and proud. I believe in what we’re doing and know the countless professionals I work with each day are doing an outstanding job in the face of mounting difficulties. I can go into more details about 1647s potential impact in North Central Oklahoma, but for the sake of brevity I’ll leave it here.

Rural Oklahoma parents and children will see little to no benefit from this bill. I’d argue rural Oklahoma would be the most negatively impacted from this potential legislation. In the metros you can’t turn around without seeing advertising in support of this bill. I feel it’s due to how many private schools are present in our Metro areas and how many of those families would be set to gain from this. I have always been a public-school proponent. Growing up in rural Oklahoma was a blessing in my eyes. I loved my time in a small school and I give a ton of credit to the educators who were put in front of me for helping shape the person I am today. When I jumped into education as a profession, I fell in love with exploring how to make Math a subject to be enjoyed instead of despised for 1000s of middle schoolers. Today, that appreciation for public education has shaped my professional journey and has provided a rewarding career path still trying to positively impact our youth. Can education continue to improve? You bet, that’s why we get up and go in each day.

Walking into Stagecoach BBQ, you can’t help but immediately notice the smell. It attacks your senses. You start enjoying the flavor of the food as soon as you step inside, before even taking a bite. That rich, sweet smell of smoke is intoxicating. Located in Newkirk, Carrie Grace and her husband, Jason, took over Stagecoach BBQ in 2018. Carrie’s dad, Vance Johnson, originally opened the restaurant after competing in barbeque cook-off competitions for years. Carrie’s parents owned and operated the restaurant for 17 years. This is truly a family business, as Vance taught Carrie everything she knows about cooking and operating a restaurant. Her mother, Debra, helped Carrie learn the bookkeeping end of the business after taking over. Let’s talk about why we’re here … the meat. I’m a big fan of pulled pork. (Full disclosure: I’m a huge fan of all things pork!) It’s my go-to at any barbeque restaurant. This pork is on point. It’s like the meat takes a long, relaxing soak in the smoke, intensifying its flavor and changing the texture in the most mouthwatering way. Don’t sleep on the kielbasa or hot links though. Both are balanced, forward and taste fantastic. But the mac and cheese may be the real winner here. Not to be too dramatic, but it’s basically heaven for your taste buds. Saturdays are Steak Night at Stagecoach. Ribeye steaks, large or small, are perfectly 400 W. South Street, Newkirk grilled to order on Saturday 580.362.3082 nights. Stagecoach also offers Hours: tender, juicy prime rib on Fri and Sat: Sun: the first and third Saturdays 11 am - 8 pm 8 am - 2 pm of the month. Years ago, the family would set up a trailer at different events and festivals. This trailer had three, old fashioned ice cream makers. The ice cream makers were five gallons each and were churned by an old steam engine. So cool! After seeing how much the public loved their product, not only did they make it available at the restaurant, but it’s also complementary with any meal purchase. Yep. You read that right, but feel free to read it again. – delicious,

complementary homemade ice cream. This entire restaurant is the definition of inviting. The rustic tin walls, the burlap curtains on the windows, the smiles worn by employees and patrons alike, that crazy good smoky smell. All these combined make you feel as though your only option is to relax, eat good food, take a breath and enjoy yourself. So, if you appreciate authentic barbecue, take a little time to drive north and savor some really good eats. Happy Eating!! Follow Stagecoach BBQ on Facebook at @TheOriginalStagecoachBBQRestaurant

COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH

Mixed by Jill Rowe/Staff Writer

There are only two words that can get me out of bed on a Sunday morning, bottomless Mimosas. There’s something about the refreshing combo of champagne and orange juice that screams, “brunch with the girls!” Although the origins of this renowned drink, which is composed of sparkling wine and orange juice, are debated (that’s nothing new), the drink is named after a yellow-flowered plant, Acacia dealbata. The inspiration for the cocktail is evident, but the individual who made it famous may surprise you. The Buck’s Fizz was created in 1921 at the Buck’s Club in London. This drink contains champagne and orange juice, with two parts sparkling wine and one part juice. Frank Meier, a bartender at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, created a slightly diluted version of the cocktail in 1934. In his cocktail book, The Artistry Of Mixing Drinks, the Mimosa is among 300 recipes. According to his recipe, you should use equal parts champagne to OJ (way too much juice if you ask me). It’s similar to the current-day version, but I prefer adding just a whisper of orange juice or opening the jug and wafting the juice scent to the champagne glass. The more bubbly, the better! The King of Horror himself, Alfred Hitchcock, has also been credited with the invention of the Mimosa. The story goes that in the 40s, Hitchcock and a friend were seen with the drink while hanging out, smoking cigars at a bar

in San Francisco. The cocktail gained popularity after multiple articles reported the drink’s ingredients. Hitchcock did indeed make the cocktail popular in America, but it’s definitely a stretch to say he invented it. Put a twist on a traditional Mimosa by adding different fruit juices. I like to use a dry sparkling wine, not sweet. But I encourage you to use the sparkling wine or champagne that you like best. No need to break the bank, though. Stop by 5150 Liquor in Ponca City and check out their amazing selection! Not just champagne, but other spirits and beers as well. I found a fantastic Brut that made a wonderful tasting mimosa! Make sure to use fresh-squeezed juice if possible. It may seem excessive, but when half of the drink is juice, you want it as fresh as possible. And always remember, it’s never too early for a Mimosa! Cheers!

Recipe:

Pour the sparkling wine into the champagne flute, filling your glass about half full. Pour the orange juice on top to fill the glass. Or try it Jill-style, pour your champagne flute full of sparkling wine, and with your eye-dropper full of juice, squeeze three small drops on top.

BOOK REVIEW

Review By: Lorrie Layton PROVIDED BY BRACE BOOKS & MORE

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

You know that book or movie character that you just love to hate? The Paris Apartment is chock full of characters like that. A couple of the characters I hated from the first introductions. Others I gradually disliked more and more throughout the book. And the protagonist? I couldn’t decide what I thought about her. The Paris Apartment is a classic whodunnit, where everyone is a valid, believable suspect. Allow me to introduce a few of the major players: Jess has abruptly left her job in London and is looking forward to catching up with her stepbrother Ben in Paris. Ben is expecting her, but is nowhere to be found when Jess arrives. Nick, Ben’s best friend from college, helped Ben get an unbelievably nice apartment in Paris. Jess wonders how Ben could afford

such a nice place as a journalist struggling to make a name for himself. Anthony lives in the first-floor apartment. He’s a belligerent, obnoxious alcoholic. I hated him immediately. Sophie lives in the penthouse apartment. She’s one of those gorgeous, classy, rich French women. She’s a snob, and it’s difficult to like her. Mimi is one of the young women living in the fourth-floor apartment. She’s naïve and innocent, but wishes she was different. She tries so hard to be more like her roommate, but something just seems off about her. Theo is a journalist who has been connecting Ben with assignments – mostly restaurant reviews. When Jess contacts him, I wondered whether he truly wanted to help Jess or just

wanted the notes from Ben’s ongoing investigation. And finally, there’s the Concierge. She observes much, but is rarely noticed. Foley’s expert use of flashbacks revealed unexpected motives just as I decided I had everything figured out. As if! The Paris Apartment is a great read. Enjoy!

Sexual assault is any type of sexual activity or contact that you do not consent to. It may occur within an intimate relationship as a tactic of domestic violence. Sexual assault is a type of violence used by perpetrators to instill fear and gain power and control over their victims.

A SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) exam is always an option for a victim if they state they have been sexually assaulted (regardless of the time since the assault). SANE staff are contacted and activated via the Survivor Resource Network at 580-762-2873. SEXUAL ASSAULT SUPPORT SERVICES

Trained advocates are available to support sexual assault victims and their families. Advocates are here to support victims during the forensic medical exam and during the investigation and prosecution process. We also help victims plan for their safety and provide guidance on processing the trauma of an assault. Sexual assault services are open to victims and survivors of all ages regardless of when the assault took place or if it was reported to law enforcement.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS OUTREACH SERVICES

We aim to teach youth about healthy relationships, boundaries, self-care, and consent in our ongoing efforts to prevent violence from happening. We know that informed youth are better equipped to protect themselves and others and make our community safer for everyone. If you are interested in having a trained advocate come and start a conversation with your students about healthy relationships, please contact our office.

Ponca Tribe Victim Services Sexual assault is a serious crime and widespread problem, with more than half of Native American women (56%) experiencing sexual violence at some point in their lifetime. Sexual violence impacts all genders and demographics, but disproportionately affects Native women who already face unique challenges and barriers to accessing support services, medical care and justice. For those who have survived sexual violence, what has happened cannot be undone or truly forgotten. But taking the journey one step at a time, and with the support they deserve, survivors can find healing, become stronger, and feel safe once again. Together we can help Native survivors reclaim their bodies, their lives and safety in their communities, so all of our relatives are safe, all the time and in all circumstances.

Rotary Celebrates 100 Years in Ponca City Story by Kelsey Wagner/ Editor-in-Chief

Rotary is much more than just a local civic club Rotary is a global network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on in February of 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. In fact, the name “Rotary” is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members’ offices. Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world. Ponca City Rotary was chartered with Rotary International on April 1st, 1922, with Mr. Heine Heberling inducted as the first official Club President. The current Ponca City Rotary Club President Kelly Johnson is proud oversee the club’s 100th anniversary celebration. In honor of its 100th anniversary, Ponca City Rotary will be holding a social for present and past members and spouses on April 26th, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Marland’s Place. “This year we have the opportunity to celebrate together as club members,” says Kelly Johnson. “We can think back and recognize the fact, that we together as current and past members, have

provided 100 Years of service & giving to Ponca City and our community.” The Ponca City Rotary Club does a variety of service projects each year benefiting a variety of nonprofits and schools. “Noon Rotary” meets each week on Mondays at noon at Pioneer Technology Center, and speakers are invited to share their passions and professions at each weekly meeting. “Downtown Rotary” is an evening Rotary club that holds two meetings per month, on the first and third Thursday. One meeting is social and the other is a “service mob” where members dedicate their time helping a nonprofit.

“Ponca City Rotary is not just a club,” says Kelly Johnson, “but rather a group of friends who have chosen to be leaders in our community, to serve those who may need a hand up, to help educate those who have a desire to learn, and to be true friends to those who just need someone to listen.” Eradicating Polio Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since their first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s

advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It’s imperative to continue efforts to vaccinate and eradicate the polio disease. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. The Rotary Foundation Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on lifechanging, sustainable projects. When you give to The Rotary Foundation, you fuel service projects projects that eradicate polio, promote peace, and improve developing communities.

Local Rotary Projects include:

City of the Plague God

by Sarwat Chadda

Sarwat Chadda has joined “Rick Riordan Presents” with an epic new adventure inspired by Mesopotamian mythology – and I enjoyed it immensely! Sikander (Sik to his friends) and his parents are the proud proprietors of Mo’s, a Manhattan deli specializing in Arab and Mediterranean food. Late one evening, as Sik is closing up the deli, demons (disgusting ones) attack. These demons serve Nergal, the ancient god of disease, who wants something he believes to be in Sik’s possession. Sik has no idea what he could possibly have that demons and an ancient (also disgusting) god want so desperately. The demons destroy the deli while searching for the treasure. Sik is certain he’ll be dead in the next 60 seconds when a person dressed all in black appears and saves Sik with some awesome ninja moves. What’s really weird – okay, everything has been weird, but this is even more weird – is that Nergal addresses Sik’s rescuer as “niece.” Definitely weird.

Spring is finally here and the Renfro Family Foundation encourages you to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. There are many wonderful community events taking place and local businesses would also love to see you out shopping!

When Sik gets home after school the next day, his parents are being loaded into an ambulance. They’ve collapsed and no one has a clue what’s wrong with them. Sik is taken to the hospital along with his parents and is repeatedly tested while his parents are placed in medically induced comas in isolation. Finally, the doctors admit that Sik is perfectly fine, although they can’t believe it. Sik’s ninja shows up at the hospital along with her mother – who just happens to be Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of love and war. They help Sik escape from the hospital. In the last 12 hours, Nergal has spread unknown diseases throughout Manhattan, making COVID-19 look like a common cold. Sik is certain he’s no hero, but Ishtar insists they cannot defeat Nergal without his help. And so it begins!

MUSIC IN & AROUND PONCA CITY

Sounding Story & Photos Contributed by Steve Scott

Off

This month, I am reflecting on the Kay County entertainment scene. From the time Ponca City was established to now, our city continues to place a priority on ensuring the public enjoys a wide variety of quality music. In our earliest days, the building of the Poncan Theatre brought movies and celebrities to our community. For decades the Community Concert Series continues to follow suit. Our city’s legacy includes the best clubs and weekly live entertainment in Kay County. And if all of this isn’t enough, just a couple of minutes away, Tonkawa has Roustabouts and other performances at NOC, along with the Full Moon Concert Series. Blackwell hosts the “Top of Oklahoma Jam” festivals. And not to forget, we have casino event centers north of Newkirk, just south of Ponca City and a major venue opening soon in Braman that all bring top touring acts to within just a few minutes of our home. We are blessed to live in an area that places an immense emphasis on music, and I believe this influence is instrumental as to why we have so many incredibly talented musicians in our midst. Life is good!

The Listening Room This month I am reviewing the greatly anticipated EP (extended play) debut album by sibling duo “Five-Year Gap.” I featured this band (comprised of Ciara Brooke and Brody Farrow) in the December 2021 column just as they were emerging on the Oklahoma music scene. They were tracking songs for the EP, and as I am writing this column over a week before the formal release, the band graciously allowed me to listen to the tracks for this review. How many times have you purchased an album only to end up playing a few tunes, and choosing to ignore those that simply “don’t meet the bar”? Every song on this EP meets and exceeds expectations. This is one of those rare play it from start to end records without interruption. The songs

60 APRIL 2022

are that strong. Albums are usually written with a common theme. Five-Year Gap holds true to their vision, as every song is a ride through the raw, emotional but honest perspective of being young in small town America, dealing with romantic relationships, friendships and insecurity. The album opens with two electric guitardriven powerpop songs, “Karate” and “Pressure.” The rock influence is very apparent, and includes a 1980s technosynth line in “Pressure.” There is a lot going on in the complex arrangement of both songs, but the skill of the artists to bring it all together is something to be admired. The next couple of songs on the album are more folk-oriented. “Chalk Houses” was released a couple of months ago, with a YouTube video (made by local company “Speak Now”) that takes the listener back to a simpler, more innocent time of life, reflecting upon what has been lost in today’s modern relationships. “You Get Me” also has a YouTube video and brings out the softer side of the band. This is followed by “Concrete Sneakers,” a folk-rock song describing the enormous emotional weight people can carry and is a return to heavier guitar and synth lines. The

album closes with “Stumbling,” a fitting tune that wraps up the journey through the band’s creative mind. Instrument choice is as much a part of a song’s entirety as the music itself. Five-Year Gap knows exactly how to produce their songs. Everything comes together behind Ciara’s commanding vocals. The instrumentation never overcomes the lyrics, so the listener is drawn into each song. Over the decades I’ve fallen in love with albums by several different female singers. It takes a special voice with presence and conviction to catch my attention, and that is why I have allegiance to singers like Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Edie Brickell, Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow. With this EP, I added a new name to my personal list: Ciara Brooke. And Five-Year Gap proved, without a doubt, they deserve to be ranked with the best pop artists to emerge from the legendary Oklahoma music scene.

The Bandstand … Ponca City’s Larry Newsom is taking his guitar and smooth voice on the road throughout April. He will be at the Cape Brewery in Jenks on April 1, Zanotti’s in Stillwater on April 8 and 23, the Flowershop Winery and Pizzeria in Yukon on April 15 and Aces High in Perry on April 16. Are you ready to ROCK? Back2Sighs has it covered! New Dynasty will be on stage April 1, OLDSKOOL on April 22 and “the one and only” Curtis Moore Band on April 29. Ridin’ High, Northern Oklahoma’s trend-setting music and dance club, is featuring Brody Caster on April 2, Native Stone on April 9, Krislyn Arthurs on April 30 and Savannah Chestnut on May 14.

Finally The music scene still seems to be somewhat affected by “The Omicron Shuffle.” But I am so grateful for the establishments who continue to support our local artists, revive our community and revel in the beauty of live events. It’s getting better. Trust me! If anyone has information on live music events, please write me at smscott54@hotmail.com.

Backyard

Gardener Story and Photos by Kat Long/Contributing Writer Spring! Even if the weather is cold, rainy, snowy, icy or any of the other things besides spring weather, it is spring. April is also a big birthday month: Mine and Ponca City Monthly! We are so Aries, don’t you think? There are so many reasons to celebrate April. Seeds are started, and I hope to see everyone at the Seed Swap on Saturday, April 2, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Central, 400 E. Central Ave. If you happen to read this after April 2 and would still like some seeds, there is usually a box of seeds left for those who missed it. Just swing by City Central and pick up the red phone on the first floor. Now, about those plants. If you have started some seeds inside, that is fabulous. If you haven’t and are beating yourself up about it, just stop. This is the backyard gardener and you still have plenty of time (and the Herb Festival) to get your plants going in the yard or in containers. Let’s talk plants that like each other.

Companion Planting You may not know this, but your garden will grow better, faster and tastier if you plant things together that “like” each other. The opposite will happen if you put plants next to each other that “hate” each other. Keep reading for the love. If you are a tomato grower, tomato plants love carrots. In fact, it is the title of one of my favorite books on gardening “Tomatoes Love Carrots” by Louise Riotte, who was actually from Oklahoma and had her garden in Ardmore. I have a copy of this book on my Kindle and a hard copy stored with my

Carrots are very beneficial to grow next to peas. A great interplanting would be carrots below

If you haven’t grown beans, this may be the year. We will have some great varieties at the Seed Swap. Plant beans with beets, cucumbers and cabbages. Make sure they have plenty of space if you are doing bush beans. The vining beans need space as well and can throw a lot of shade for the cabbages if you happen to plant late. July sun is brutal to all the brassicas, but especially lettuces and cabbages, which make those shade plants so helpful.

More traditional pop up green house/row covering. These make a great cold frame when growing in late fall or early spring.

Peas grow well with radishes, cucumbers, corn, beans and potatoes and have no problem being close to dill plants. They dislike onions and garlic, so keep that in mind when planting. A great interplanting would be peas, radishes and potatoes with some dill or thyme. Also, this sounds like a great meal.

If you are planning to grow corn this year, melons, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers also like the shade provided by corn. Pole/vining beans are great with corn, but keep your tomatoes far away from the corn because those tomato worms will eat your corn too. And they can hide so well in all that green.

GARDEN Continued from Page 63 Succession Planting Some of my Facebook gardening friends are planning to swap produce this summer. Let’s face it: some things just grow better in my yard than others. Like sage, parsley, mint, beans, strawberries and blackberries. I am hoping to swap some strawberries for squashes and pumpkins. Last year was a bad year for tomatoes for me, but I am hoping this year is better. And the Farmer’s Market starts back up at the Pioneer Woman June 4, which coincidentally is Herb Festival day. Mark those calendars. Succession planting is a way to grow more from your garden. You plant not just once, but several times. But you have to pay attention to the planting windows for the crops you want to plant more than once. For instance: I love lettuce, kale and chard. These greens do not like Oklahoma summers, so it is an early spring planting, eat greens until they bolt, harvest seed during July and reseed the area in mid-August for more greens in September and October. With a little row cover or portable greenhouse, you can have lettuce

Other great early spring/late summer crops are radishes, beets and carrots. Carrots will actually overwinter with enough mulch and you can just harvest them from the garden all winter. well into winter. The colder weather makes the greens tastier. When one or two of the greens are going to seed, I pull the others up and put in tomato and jalapeno plants which love the hot summer. If I manage to prop the tomatoes up well enough, the lettuces love the shade.

THE MODERN MOM LIFE: Story Contributed by Chelsie Hendrickson Let’s talk about mom-guilt. You know, that little voice in your head that makes you feel bad for doing ANYTHING that doesn’t involve your child. Also, the same one that makes you basically get into a one-sided argument with your significant other because you think they are upset at you for leaving to do something, but really, it’s just you and nobody is really mad at all and you end up asking “are you sure” about a million times, making the situation a bigger deal than it ever was. Then by the end of it, you end up irritated at each other for absolutely no reason. Sound exhausting? Now I would like to think that part of this issue does have to do with society. I mean, once you become a mom, that is all you get to be, right? Who you are outside of being a mom is no longer existent? WRONG. But honestly, the other (larger) part of the issue just has to do with us. We think we must be there for EVERYTHING. Dad has baby and he or she is crying? Yep, we are going in. Baby won’t eat anything at that certain moment? Tag me in! Baby cries for you when you are trying to leave? You know what, I will just stay. So of course, when you decide to have a girls’ night or just decide to go to the grocery store by yourself, there is this voice (I like to call her a name that I can’t put in print) that makes you question doing anything by yourself. Because what happens if they cry? What happens if they don’t cooperate for the person watching your child, whether it be the other parent, sitter, grandparent, or friend? Let me tell you what happens, they figure it out. And if they don’t, there are about ten different ways now-a-days for somebody to get a hold of you. For me personally, I feel guilt when my mom watches my child all day and I am at work. Has she told me a million times that she loves it and is so thankful she gets to be the one to watch him? Yes. Has she gotten upset when I told her

We can’t thank you enough for doing business with us!

I was getting on waiting lists for daycare so she can have her own life? Sure has. Do I still let that guilt creep back in sometimes even though she has told me this an exhausting number of times? You betcha. In a nutshell, mom-guilt is a thing, and I have found that a lot of moms experience it. I love my child and being a mom is one of the best things that has ever happened to me, but it doesn’t make up my whole identity. Now, I will say there is a fine line between doing things for yourself occasionally, and leaving a note on your child that says, ‘BRB’ and then you are gone for 3 weeks. Not saying that sometimes in this beautiful thing called motherhood you won’t feel like doing the latter sometimes, but I would highly suggest not doing that. However, it is important to take time for yourself if you can. So, plan a lunch or dinner with your friends. Find a quiet space and read. Run errands by yourself (and of course when I say run errands, I mean get some coffee and peruse Marshall’s for things you don’t need) when you can and hey, why not throw in a mini-Celine Dion concert to and from. You will be surprised how rejuvenating screaming “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” in your car can be.

Home is where your story begins, I can help you get there.

Asparagus & Tomato Frittata Recipe and Photos by Paul Muehlberg/Contributing Writer

This frittata has sautéed asparagus and tomatoes topped with crispy pancetta. It’s one of my favorite brunch go-tos and is perfect for Easter brunch.

Ingredients

12 ounces asparagus, washed, trimmed and cut into ½” pieces ½ pint cherry tomatoes, washed and halved 10 large eggs 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons chopped basil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 5 ounces pancetta, diced 1 tablespoon butter 3 ounces fontina 3 ounces gruyere

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Wisk the eggs, cream and 1 teaspoon kosher salt in a large mixing bowl; stir in the basil and set aside. In a 12” cast iron skillet, add the pancetta and cook until browned and crispy about 8-10 minutes. Transfer the pancetta to a plate lined with a paper towel. Remove fat from the pan leaving 1 tablespoon in the pan. Add the butter. When the butter is melted add the asparagus and a pinch of salt. Sauté until the asparagus beings to brown 2-3 minutes. Next add the tomatoes and continue to cook until the tomatoes are softened, about 2 minutes. Next, pour the egg mixture over the vegetables and continue to cook until the egg mixture begins to set. Sprinkle the top with the cheese and pancetta. Place in the oven on the middle rack. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the eggs are set and the cheese is brown and bubbly. Let the frittata cool for 2-3 minutes and serve directly from the skillet.

Finding Your Routine The fundamentals of a good training mix PART 3 Story by Kera Kester, NASM Certified Personal Trainer/Contributing Writer

Welcome to part three of our series! In a time where we can scroll through hundreds of different social media workouts within minutes, this series is here to help you with where to start and what to do FOR YOU. In part 1, we covered how to find your workout routine split, especially amid busy schedules. In part 2, we covered exercise selection. Check those out if you haven’t yet! Today is fundamental 3 – cultivating success by way of a progressive routine. Here are two important ways to keep progressing in the gym!

1. A consistent routine It is most beneficial to avoid switching up your routine until you have completed 4-6 weeks of your current one. I’m sure at some point you’ve heard something along these lines, “You have to change routines each week so that you keep your body guessing and shock

it into fat loss/muscle gain.” This is not just unnecessary but also untrue. True adaptation cannot occur in the best way if we follow that logic. Here’s why. Our bodies go through three different phases when starting a routine. It’s what we call General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS).

A. Phase 1 – Alarm Reaction This is where your body reacts to the change in stress placed on it. These stressors include lifting (dumbbells, etc.) and cardio machines, to name a few. Those new to exercise should take full advantage of this stage because the body has never experienced training and therefore sees a rapid increase in strength due to new muscle growth stimulation!

B. Phase 2 – Stage of Resistance The body now starts to adapt to these new external stressors by signaling its need for muscle growth in order to keep up with the new stimuli being placed on it. Though this doesn’t happen for beginners as quickly as phase 1, it can take up to a year for the body to completely adapt. For intermediate or advanced lifters, continually changing workout programs throughout the year is a great idea to continue progress.

C. Phase 3 – Stage of Exhaustion Here, the body is no longer able to resist the stress or induce adequate muscle growth stimulation. This leads to what we call overtraining. A week of rest or de-loading can help prevent this! Using the same exercises for 4-6 weeks helps take full advantage of muscle growth stimulation while avoiding GAS phase 3 or a plateau. Our bodies have a survival gene that adapts to the environment around it. Muscle growth, which burns fat, happens because of this gene and partners beautifully with what we call progressive overload. Within these 4-6 weeks, we should implement number 2.

2. Progressive Overload This is where our bodies not only react to initial stressors of resistance training, but the gradually increased stress as well. This ensures that muscle growth stimulation continues in greater measure. You might have heard it said that to apply progressive overload, just incrementally add weight. This logic can become limiting. So here are some

See HEALTH Continued on Page 72

HEALTH Continued from Page 71 other ways that you can apply progressive overload: A. Increase sets. For example, doing 3 sets of an exercise for two weeks followed by 4 sets the next two weeks. B. Increase reps. Instead of doing 8 reps for a specific exercise the entire four weeks, do 10 reps on weeks 3 and 4. C. Increase intensity. For example, utilizing time under tension by changing the tempo of an exercise. Your squats may currently look like dropping down for 1 second then coming right back up again. Instead, count to 5 during the downward motion of the squat and then come back up. D. Getting better with form. If you are not doing an exercise correctly, chances are you won’t feel much of a challenge. Perfecting your form can make the exercise so much more challenging and ensure the work output is happening from the intended muscle groups.

E. Increase range of motion. If at the beginning, you could go halfway down with your pushups, work up to getting your chest to the ground! F. More workouts per week. Instead of continuing with three lifting sessions, add a steady state 30-minute cardio session along with it for a fourth day of exercise. G. Taking less time to finish a set than you did on previous weeks or recovering from a workout faster. If you are already familiar with this info, I hope this series gave you even more inspiration! If this was all new to you then I hope you gained fresh perspective and know how! No one wants working out to be tedious or boring, and there’s no reason that it must be. I am so excited to see and/ or hear about all the success you have. Have an amazing month of April and shoutout to National World Health Day!

Tell Me A Story About… Story by Marlys Cervantes/Contributing Writer One of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones is the stories of your past, your youth. Frankly, if you’re young, one of the greatest gifts you can give your elders is the gift of the stories of your day, your trips, your dreams. The gift of yourself is so much more important than any other gift you can ever give. Christina Baldwin, author of Storycatcher: Making Sense of Our Lives Through the Power and Practice of Story, says, “When we live in a family, a community, a country where we know each other’s true stories, we remember our capacity

to lean in and love each other into wholeness.” The power of telling stories is great, and the value can cross tremendous borders. My favorite class to teach is Journal Writing/Storytelling. We explore stories of yesterday, today and still dream of tomorrow. It’s liberating to do all of these as we better our writing with each step. In the summer I look for projects to keep creating, and last summer was a tremendous creative adventure. A project I did for the National Park

Service, along with the National Writing Project (for which I serve as a teacher-consultant), was featured on the NPS’s website. The goal was to use the outdoors for inspiration to write. Easy for me since I adore writing outside. However, while I used the outdoors, I primarily used family history for the project. N. Scott Momaday, Kiowa author and artist, is the storyteller who led to my inspiration for others. Momaday has an intriguing concept he uses in both his fiction and nonfiction called “Blood Memory.” The complex idea is that memory is passed genetically through the blood from generation to generation, resulting in our history living through our bodies, blurring distinction between storytelling and personal narrative. For Momaday, an instance in his writing using this form is in his novel The Way to Rainy Mountain,

with his grandmother Aho’s connection to her people far back long before she was actually born. It then becomes his connection which he can continue to pass on. For us, then, in writing a story using this concept, we can begin with just a skeleton of a story. If you know just a bit of the story of an ancestor, place yourself in one’s place. The story you have doesn’t have to be over a long period of time. It may be only a moment. Seriously, important

moments are perfect stories. Truly, it is better not to know too much because you aren’t trying to write a documentary, you are writing your story using empathy, with the individual’s feelings. You will imagine yourself in that person’s place and time. You will write this story in first person, using I. Whether you truly believe the concept of Blood Memory or not, you can write using this method. My students do. I have. It’s one of my very favorite types of writing if done well. You can view the video about this storytelling project on YouTube: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=AJDit26ETTA&feature=emb_imp_woyt The video includes an example story of my own written using the Blood Memory form of writing. I hope you enjoy it. I’d love to hear about any stories you write in this manner. Again, be sure you write yours in first person to maintain the strength of the story. “Story is the heart of language. Story moves us to love and hate and can motivate us to change the whole course of our lives. Story can lift us beyond our individual borders to imagine the realities of other people, times and places,” Baldwin tells us. In times like these we are living, I would say there’s nothing more important than trying to understand our world through the eyes of others. With National Tell a Story Day being April 27, let’s tell those stories, let’s understand one another’s pasts, their present and their dreams. Let’s lean in and tell stories. Let’s lean in and listen.
